Billed as "the day music changed history," the Live Aid concerts of July 13, 1985, were held to raise money to fight the horrifying famines sweeping Africa. The brainchild of Bob Geldof and representing the efforts of countless musicians and technicians, Live Aid was a genuine and inspiring effort to help the victims of an overwhelming calamity. Twenty years after the twin concerts (one in London, one in Philadelphia) were broadcast worldwide, the 4-DVD treatment furthers the cause, with proceeds going toward the Band Aid Trust.

The DVD set opens with a heartbreaking documentary on the crisis, followed by videos of the two hit songs that represented the collaborative nature of Geldof's efforts—Band Aid' s "Do They Know It's Christmas?" and USA for Africa's "We Are the World." Since Live Aid was never intended to be released in a recorded format, preservation of TV footage has been unreliable, resulting in some glaring omissions. Led Zeppelin's semi-reunion doesn't appear, and neither does a legendary session with Bob Dylan, Ron Wood, and Keith Richards. Some sets by performers who were popular at the time may inspire either nostalgic glee or head-scratching (Kiki Dee fans, you know who you are). Sprinkled amid these performances are a couple real gems, including a performance by Run DMC, the event's sole representative of the ascendant rap movement. Much of the music here was a passing fad, but the sentiment that brought it all together is timeless. -- Ryan Boudinot

Description

Any music fan can tell you exactly where they were on July 13th, 1985. There had never been a concert event of such magnitude-the biggest names in music performing in a concert broadcast live from 2 continents to an audience of over 1.5 billion. It is estimated that 85% of the world's television sets were tuned in to Live Aid that day. Now, for the first time on home video, you can own the concert that was arguably the biggest rock event in history-featuring David Bowie, Eric Clapton, Madonna, Paul McCartney, Sting, The Who, U2, Neil Young, and many, many more. Over 10 hours of performances in a premium-packaged 4-DVD set. Royalties will benefit Band Aid Trust, which continues to provide direct hunger relief in Africa.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars worth every penny.......2007-08-01

the fact that the i am able to contribute to the cause is already worth every penny. with the added bonus of being able to watch the concert that nobody would think of being able to watch again. i've watched the concert when i was 13 yrs old in the philippines. the quality is not really good, but hey, that was the 80's! some performance are not included but it was explained in the book. and count ourselves lucky that we are still able to have 4 discs!!! it's like owning part of history that won't happen again.

1 out of 5 stars DO NOT BUY THIS ITEM !!! WASTE OF MONEY !.......2007-07-13

I recently bought this item. Upon viewing them most of the songs were cut and just very few were full. Its like having a climax listening and then was suddenly cut of replace with another song. IT IS LIKE A SAMPLER !!!!

3 out of 5 stars As many have pointed out ... .......2007-07-10

For the price you're being asked to pay, this is a terrific set with a lot of great music. However, the criticisms everyone seems to universally have are as glaring as they are legitimate. First is the spotty audio quality due to the poor condition of the existing recordings and the second is what you're missing out on.

I can live with the audio. Sure I'd do hand-springs if it was in 5.1 surround and I could really crank up my stereo and jam out with my air-guitar. As it is though, the audio quality ranks somewhere around the "OK" to "Acceptable" range. Not great by a long-shot, but I guess it'll do.

Unforgivable, however, is the HOURS of missing footage. The real tragedy here is that some of the missing sets are the concert's most memorable, history-making, moments. It's borderline-tragic that, in the zeal of making this a one-in-a-lifetime event, the footage and audio weren't preserved better. From what I understand Geldof was very against any recordings existing and since Mtv was in its infancy, they simply didn't know what to do with what they had.

So again, it's a good value for your dollar and I can't not recommend it, but I can't help but sigh when I think of what a treasure this might have been.

5 out of 5 stars A Moment In Time..........2007-06-05

Perhaps I'm being too generous by giving the LIVE AID dvd set 5-stars. As another reviewer pointed out, many performances are left off of this set. However, some of the biggest acts of the 80s are shown performing their monster hits with the exception of TINA TURNER, WHAM, and THE THOMPSON TWINS. Although these performers do appear with other singers/musicians, the footage of them performing their hits was either destroyed or lost. I'm sure there might be other examples of groups/singers who appear on the LIVE AID dvds and they're not performing their big hits, but, as far as I can tell, most of them are.

The fact that there's even a dvd set available is a miracle in itself.

A booklet that comes with the dvd set explains the idea behind LIVE AID and how BOB GELDOF (singer of THE BOOMTOWN RATS) saw a BBC News report on television in 1984 (the news footage is included at the start of dvd #1) about the famine going on in Africa/Ethiopia. He wanted to do something about it and formed BAND AID in the UK. This in turn formed U.S.A FOR AFRICA in the US, which ultimately led to the LIVE AID concert which happened on July 13, 1985. The concert was filmed by MTV, ABC and the BBC, and aired on its respective channel with an estimated 1.5 billion viewers around the world.

According to the dvd's producer, Jill Sinclair, Geldof wanted the concert to be shown only once and not recorded. ABC took Geldof at his word and destroyed the footage so it could never be re-broadcast again. The BBC ignored him but lost some of the footage, while the videos that weren't lost, sat collecting dust. MTV found over 100 tapes of b-roll of the concert and so Sinclair, and the rest of the LIVE AID dvd team, combined MTV's footage of the LIVE AID concert, with the remaining BBC footage and that's how we get this remarkable 4-dvd set! So bravo to Jill Sinclair and the dvd team.

The concert took place at Wembley Stadium in London and JFK Stadium in Philadelphia. The dvds go back and forth from Wembley to JFK, but transitions smoothly, so there aren't any jarring cuts in between the musical acts. Considering that this concert was recorded using analog equipment and was meant for a one-time only showing, the footage itself has been restored as best as it could be and it looks pretty good (sharp, vibrant color, etc.). There are some instances where wavy-horizontal lines appear on close-up shots on some of the performances, and Sinclair explains in the booklet that this is a phenomenon called "microphany," which happens when the "camera lens is affected by great volume." The lines aren't that distracting since they aren't colored, and they don't distort the picture, but they're just noticeable. It only happens once in a while and according to the booklet, only on some UK performances.

Along with the performances, the LIVE AID dvd set also includes extras:

DVD #1
**BBC TV NEWS REPORT
**BAND AID - DO THEY KNOW IT'S CHRISTMAS - music video
**U.S.A FOR AFRICA - WE ARE THE WORLD - "..."

DVD #4-(includes performances recorded at different locations/times and either broadcast that day or never televised)

**INXS - What You Need; Don't Change
**B.B. KING - Why I Sing The Blues; Don't Answer The Door; Rock Me Baby
**ASHFORD & SIMPSON with TEDDY PENDERGRASS - Reach Out And Touch(Somebody's Hand)
**RUN DMC - King Of Rock
**CLIFF RICHARD - A World Of Difference
**DAVID BOWIE & MICK JAGGER - Dancing In The Streets (this is actually the music video; according to wikipedia Bowie and Jagger were supposed to do a live duet on the song, with Bowie in London and Jagger in Philadelphia, but because of technical difficulties it couldn't be done)
**DOCUMENTARY - Food And Trucks And Rock 'n' Roll

Instead of a scene selection menu, the dvds have "search by artist" that lets you go right to the start of that performer's set (which will then play the rest of the concert from that point on, rather than going back to the menu). You also have the option to just play the Wembley performances or the Philadelphia perfomances.

If you're too young to remember this concert, you might miss the significance of it. But it's still worth watching. Like Woodstock was to a generation before it, LIVE AID showed the world that young people could come together, through music, and collectively believe in something that could change the world. If you do remember this moment in time, watching this concert will bring back many memories.

Some of the stand out performances on these dvds, IMO:

FREDDIE MERCURY/QUEEN - The rapport between the audience and Mercury is incredible. He launches into an impromptu "scat" singing certain vowels to the audience and they sing it back to him, verbatim

ELTON JOHN & GEORGE MICHAEL - John playing the piano, while Michael belts out John's "Don't Let The Sun Go Down On Me"

PATTI LABELLE - The soul diva belting out her version of Lennon's "Imagine" and then going into "Forever Young." Towards the end of the latter song, she puts down the microphone, walking up to the front of the stage and continues singing...and you can still hear her voice, barely audible, but powerful enough to be heard over the cheering crowd and the back-up singers

TINA TURNER & MICK JAGGER - duet on "State Of Shock" Turner matches Jagger move for move and lip for lip

So even though this set is not complete, it still deserves 5-stars.

Dr. Terwilliker: What other instruments are there, pray tell? Scratchy violins, screechy piccolos, nauseating trumpets, et cetera, et cetera?

The only live-action Dr. Seuss movie for nearly a half-century, this delightful musical comedy is a treat--something for kids who thought they have seen everything. Young Bart (Tommy Rettig of TV's Lassie) detests his piano lessons with the fanatical Dr. Terwilliker (Hans Conried). As with Dorothy in The Wizard of Oz, Bart falls into a dream world in which the piano teacher--renamed Dr. T--is ruler and children are hunted down to have piano lessons. Worse yet, Dr. T has magical control over Bart's mom (Mary Healy). The Oscar-nominated songs are uneven but the art direction is superb, creating a truly magical world (and the world's longest piano). Dr. Seuss's love for language stays intact. Many kids of the 1950s might remember Bart's five-fingered beanie, which was a top seller. Great fun for the 5-10 age range, and adults too. --Doug Thomas

5 out of 5 stars The 5,000 Fingers of Dr. T.......2007-06-26

Wildly imaginative, deliriously kooky film was co-written by Theodor Geisel (aka Dr. Seuss), and captures the fun, off-kilter spirit of his books. Some over-the-top set pieces get showcased in saturated `50s Technicolor, sure to keep viewers of all ages glued to the screen. Conried is a hoot as the maniacal Doctor, Rettig refreshingly understated as Bart, and Hayes appealing as Zabladowski, the affable plumber (!) who comes through in the clinch. Sure-fire family entertainment, suitable for younger kids.

5 out of 5 stars Classics are good!.......2007-05-13

I remember watching this so many Saturdays mornings on my local TV station. When I caught it late night on AMC I knew I had to show it to my kids. Some songs were so stuck in my head that I was able to sing along. It wowed my kids with all the crazy Seuss details...the costumes and set design are a hoot! I loved the words and dialog. The story is a bit simple, but then most of life's pleasures are. Try it...you will like it.

4 out of 5 stars Deliciously Surreal.......2007-01-17

Colorful, vibrant, and sweetly charming.

Must have a good sense of humour to enjoy it! :)

4 out of 5 stars Great movie, but this DVD needs to be "dressed up" a bit more........2006-03-17

First of all, I'm reviewing the DVD product and not the movie.

This is one of those movies that you either get or you don't. If you've searched for this movie and bought it, chances are you "get it" so I won't write about the movie itself.

This is possibly the most disturbing, unique, and fun kids movie ever. I wish there had been some sort of documentary on the DVD. Even if all the original people involved in the production are no longer with us, just some commentary from a film historian would have been interesting. Just what impact did this film have when it was released in 1952?

Also, the DVD navigation acted strangely. When I was in the bonus cartoon the "return to menu" function on my DVD player didn't work. I had to hit stop and reboot the DVD to get out of the cartoon and back to the main menu.

The "bonus cartoon" however was a wonderful surprise: an original "Gerald McBoing Boing" cartoon (Gerald McBoing Boing's Symphony). I'd never seen one of these and I totally loved it.

So, I got a great and fascinating movie and a wonderful bonus cartoon, but I was left wanting to learn more, and all I had left to look at were a few black and white still pictures from the production.

5 out of 5 stars Living Dr. Suess.......2006-03-17

With script and set design by Dr. Suess, this 1952 film is a visual treat. It is both timeless and a 1950's time capsule. The stars are Peter Lind Hayes and Mary Healy, a popular married duo of the times who have slid into history. The main struggle is between piano teacher Dr. T played by Hans Conried [voice of Disney's TV Magic Mirror and Jay Ward's Snidley Whiplash] and his reluctant student Bart played by Tommy Rettig before he became Lassie's original TV owner. Dr. T wants the bored Bart to practice his piano playing for a recital, but Bart wants to go outside and play baseball. Hayes is a returning veteran working as a plumber who spars/sparks with Healy as Bart's mom, widowed by the Korean Police Action. The bulk of the film is a Suessian dream sequence featuring such set pieces as a dancing hypnosis duel between Hayes and Conreid, a roller skating duel between Hayes and a pair of twins joined at the beard, and the demented dance of the non-piano players. Then there is the giant piano where 500 children [the 5,000 Fingers]play simultaniously There are atomic fears, the powerless place of children, family bonding, Freudian symbolism, meglomania, and musical prejudice. Most of deeper themes will appeal to adults while the younger viewers will enjoy the fantasy [that becomes darker before rising to a happy ending] elements which stand the test of time over 50 years later. I am very pleased that it is finally on DVD.

Trying to learn yoga from a videotape could try the patience of a bona fide yogi. How to know when your form is correct versus when you are risking injury? If you can't do that downward-facing dog with your legs as straight as the model on the tape, what's the best way? This beginner's boxed set solves the first problem through detailed and careful explanation of the asanas, then sidesteps the second by having two different instructors demonstrate both advanced and beginning version of each pose. It's a thoughtful, responsible, safe approach, one that reminds students to go at their own pace and to pay attention to their own bodies. Soft-spoken, non-intimidating Alan Finger begins each of the Yoga Zone's programs by demonstrating proper breathing technique. He then guides students through a clear, logical, and appropriately paced sequence of poses, emphasizing correct placement rather than throwing or forcing the body into position. The Introduction to Yoga program covers most of the basic asanas used elsewhere in the series, including the potted-palm series, cat, dog, mountain, and triangle, while subsequent tapes move on to more advanced variations on these fundamental yoga building blocks. The Conditioning and Stress Release program systematically relaxes every muscle in the body, and the more vigorous Flexibility and Tone uses standing exercises like sun salutations to build heat in the system and promote flexibility. Finally, the two sessions included on the Meditation tape provide a welcome reminder that yoga is about much more than just working out. Unlike many videos that bill themselves as "introductory," these Yoga Zone tapes will leave neophytes feeling relaxed and renewed rather than clumsy and confused. This is the boxed set to buy if you're looking for a nuanced understanding of how yoga works rather than just sweat-drenched intensity. --Mary Park

1 out of 5 stars Disappointed..........2007-08-19

I bought this product because of the glowing reviews. I used it only once. The pace was really slow and there was a lack of energy or enthusiasm to keep one going. I understand this DVD set is old but the "look" and "feel" of the program were not very inspiring. I thought I was going to fall asleep. I would not recommend it even for beginners.

5 out of 5 stars This was recommended to me by a friend and I couldn't be happier.......2007-08-07

I'm an athletic male in my mid-thirties. I've worked out and played competitive sports my whole life, and did all the commensurate cross-training and attention to nutrition in order to succeed. By most metrics, I'd be considered a very fit person. I say *most* metrics because the introduction of yoga to my life has been very humbling, exposing weaknesses in my body that I didn't know existed.

Over the past month, I've found myself reaching for the "Introduction to Yoga" DVD most often since the Flexibility and the Strength DVDs are a bit too advanced for me. I've used the Meditation DVD just once. It's fine, but too passive for me as I need to build quite a bit of strength and flexibility first just to "graduate" from the first DVD!

I set aside an hour a day to do this. I find myself actually craving to go through the yoga rountine. The first week it made me sore and tired (as one would expect starting up any new "work out" routine) but during the subsequent weeks I have felt refreshed and invigorated after each routine.

I recommend this set highly for beginners.

5 out of 5 stars Perfect For Beginners!.......2007-07-25

This is a great collection for totally new beginners. I bought this set so that I could learn yoga with my kids. I have 3 sons (ages 11, 12, and 13) who are active in youth football and wrestling. I really feel that yoga can help them with injury prevention and conditioning in sports, and help all of us with general flexibility, health and well being. We have tried a couple of other videos and this set is the best so far! The instructor actually intructs you (imagine that!) in detail on each pose, and continually gives cues for your breathing. It is slow enough to to follow along, and really hold the poses and feel them working. Alan's intructions let you concentrate on breathing, so you don't have to keep watching the t.v. the whole time to make sure your doing it right. The other people in the videos demonstrate a few variations of the poses if your not as flexible. My kids actually enjoyed following along with these videos, and said these were so much better than the ones we were using before. They said they really understood what they were suppose to be doing, and didn't have to struggle so much. (YEAH!!) Which, of course, makes it much more enjoyable for me to do it with them. :o)

There are short commercials at the beginning of each video for music. I either use those couple of minutes to get situated, or just fast forward. No big deal. The dvd's are each broken up into two chapters. The first runs the whole class from beginning to end, which is about an hour (but it seemed to go by pretty fast). The second chapter breaks the class down into 6 segments so you can pick and choose where you want to start, skip a section, or customize the order of your routine. The seting of the class looks warm and inviting, which is pretty nice. It feels natural, and is not distracting or overly vacation like. It takes place inside a huge room with hard wood floors, neutral colored stone/bricks, and neutral colored walls, with warm lightling. This was a nice change from the last two videos which were a manicured tropical setting, and a cold, grey drop cloth setting.

I would definitely recommned this set if you are new to yoga like me. It's also great for older kids.

I am adding to my review that I do not care for, or use the fourth dvd in this collection: Meditation, Two Complete Sessions. I watched it once. It's not my cup of tea. There is hardly any physical activity (I realize that's becuse it's meditation), so I don't use it.

However, if you find the lowest price possible for the set of 4 (like me) it's a usually a better deal to buy the set of 4 than to buy each DVD individually. And if your into mediation you may like the Meditation DVD. I still love the this collection, just thought I'd clarify.

5 out of 5 stars For BEGINNERS.......2007-06-29

This set is very good but definetly for beginners. I had not done much yoga before, but felt that I could move a bit faster than they progressed. They were all really slow-moving. But, this was really focused at keeping good form and learning to breath which was beneficial. I found them all to be really relaxing.

3 out of 5 stars Ok for some.......2007-01-05

This is ok for beginners. But not for those with a little weight to lose. I was trying to fit this into my schedule for weight loss and toning. Trying to start a new habit. I can't do a third of the positions because the belly gets in the way.

Some people take up yoga to build strength and flexibility; others are primarily looking to reduce stress and tension. This 55-minute program, while purporting to address both groups, is actually much more appropriate for the latter. Yoga Zone founder Alan Finger does an excellent job not merely emphasizing the importance of the breath--the single most vital element of any yoga practice--but also explaining yoga breathing techniques, followed by a series of easy stretches (for the neck, shoulders, arms, and such) and a variety of standing, sitting, and lying poses beneficial to yogis of all levels. The pace is gentle, the sequence of poses logical, the instruction clear and constant; beginners will be challenged but not intimidated, while more advanced types might find it a welcome alternative to sweaty, aerobic yoga workouts. --Sam Graham

4 out of 5 stars Healing Yoga Workout.......2007-09-02

Alan Finger's calming instruction style allows you to relax into each pose as you release tension and heal the body. Two yoga instructors show the exercises while Alan Finger guides you through each movement with a sense of precision. Deceptively easy stretches become a challenge when held for extended periods of time. Throughout the routine the body is calmed by breathing deeply.

You may recognize table, cat, cow, downward dog and mountain pose. If you are intermediate you may want to do this routine to increase your patience. Beginners will be happy with the slower pacing and lack of difficult postures.

5 out of 5 stars Finally a yoga tape with a yogi teacher.......2007-08-06

I have purchased several yoga tapes in my journey to find an at home guided yoga workout as good as ones in a yoga studio. Aside from the relatively minor fact that the camera person is clearly a male (due to the inordinate amount of time focused on unnecessary close-ups of the two lovely instructor's figures) this tape really does give some innovative and very helpful stretching sequences. Alan has the all-important yoga, tension releasing focus and commentary that helps to really you to release tension and let the day melt away. The other thing I really appreciate about this tape is the pacing. MANY of the yoga videos out there simply don't provide enough time in a posture to really release into it fully. This one doesn't make you feel rushed. I also loved the fact that at the end he doesn't make you get up, but you can stay in a relaxed corspe pose as long as you would like once the tape is finished. This tape focuses mostly on flexibility but there are a few mintues of good strengthing poses. Yoga is a very important balance to our society which focuses on strength and cardio with out tying the body's performance to the breath. Alan does a great job of drawing your focus back to the breath. It is a great substitute for being able to actually go to a yoga class. You will be refreshed by the workout.

4 out of 5 stars Relaxing full-body stretch for beginning yogis.......2007-03-22

I've been interested in trying this Yoga Zone practice for some time now. Even though I'm no longer a yoga beginner (I consider myself a solid intermediate), I had heard that this program was very relaxing, particularly for the neck, and I am always looking for yoga practices along these lines. I have tried many of the Yoga Zone videos, but this was only my second full-length (almost an hour) practice with Yoga Zone founder Alan Finger. The first thing I noticed about this program is that is it performed in an indoor studio; since every other YZ video I've every tried was outdoors, this was a bit disappointing but not a major factor. The entire practice moves at a slow, relaxing pace, with long holds of the postures allowing you to really feel the release associated with each move.

Alan and his two students, Lisa and Michelle (who displays less flexible modifications) begin in a seated position with basic breathing exercises and continue with simple warm-ups, including a cross-legged seated forward bend and forward bend with a twist. Next comes the neck release series, which involves a slow turn from side-to-side, a partial turn using the opposite hand as a weight on the top of the head, and a chin push. A few additional moves for the shoulders follow, namely a shoulder roll and an arm pull across the chest. Staff pose rounds out this initial seated series, which lasts about 15 minutes. Alan then transitions you to a lying position for reclined bound angle, bridge, and double-leg back release. Moving to hands and knees, you'll do a cat series plus some really nice wrist stretches. The only down dog of the practice follows, and then a standing forward bend prepares you for the short standing series to come. The standing postures include tadasana, side bend, standing back bend, forward bend, side angle pose, and a wide angle forward bend series. You are now 35 minutes into the practice, and Alan moves back to the floor for 12 point, table, seated forward bend, thread the needle, leg extensions/lowers, single leg back release, revolved stomach pose, and finally, savasana. As with the other longer YZ I've tried (Flexibility & Stress Release), Alan leads you through a lengthy (10 minutes) savasana that is extremely relaxing--there is something about his voice that nearly puts me to sleep every time! The total practice time is approximately 58 minutes, but the soothing music continues into credits, so you could easily relax into savasana for a bit longer.

Although I liked this practice and did find it very relaxing, I also felt that it was a little below my current level. At this point, I have other relaxing yoga videos which I prefer to this one, particularly Benagh's Yoga for Stress Relief and Yoga in the Garden of Serenity (the latter has amazing neck stretches which go way beyond what is offered here). Still, this is an excellent beginning yoga program, and I think it would also be a good fit for those who usually don't enjoy yoga but are looking for a relaxing, full-body stretch routine.

5 out of 5 stars Must Buy.......2007-03-09

This DVD is someone who wants to start with Yoga. These poses have power to remove stress and make you feel sound. And yeah... Alan's voice is very soothing.

5 out of 5 stars I find myself craving this...........2006-08-31

This was definately a good buy. I bought this because I was having some back problems and thought maybe this would give me some relief. It did that and more. While it can be challenging-the stretching, the directions are every clear, and the result is awesome. I could feel myself loosening up throughout and then the relaxation at the end is the kicker. Afterwards I fell like I just awoke from an awesome nap. And its helped with my back. I would recommend this to anyone.

The debut film of director Joel Coen and his brother-producer Ethan Coen, 1983's Blood Simple is grisly comic noir that marries the feverish toughness of pulp thrillers with the ghoulishness of even pulpier horror. (Imagine the novels of Jim Thompson somehow fused with the comic tabloid Weird Tales, and you get the idea.) The story concerns a Texas bar owner (Dan Hedaya) who hires a seedy private detective (M. Emmett Walsh) to follow his cheating wife (Frances McDormand in her first film appearance), and then kill her and her lover (John Getz). The gumshoe turns the tables on his client, and suddenly a bad situation gets much, much worse, with some violent goings-on that are as elemental as they are shocking. (A scene in which a character who has been buried alive suddenly emerges from his own grave instantly becomes an archetypal nightmare.) Shot by Barry Sonnenfeld before he became an A-list director in Hollywood, Blood Simple established the hyperreal look and feel of the Coens' productions (undoubtedly inspired a bit by filmmaker Sam Raimi, whose The Evil Dead had just been coedited by Joel). Sections of the film have proved to be an endurance test for art-house movie fans, particularly an extended climax that involves one shock after another but ends with a laugh at the absurdity of criminal ambition. This is definitely one of the triumphs of the 1980s and the American independent film scene in general. --Tom Keogh

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars good film.......2007-09-15

I never saw the original version, only this one. I thought it was a good film, although I found myself guessing what was going to happen next quite easily. I did enjoy the performances though and I would recommend it to someone wanting to see a quirky crime movie, with quite a few twists and turns.

5 out of 5 stars We're not communicating.......2007-07-27

We're talking here (the Royal we) about the Director's Uncut. After reading most of the reviews to date we understand that most people know it's great, but everyone has a different take on what it's about. Well, not everyone. Anyway, we thought we'd make a few comments. 1. Never believe anything the Coens tell you. 2. This story isn't that simple. Well, it is, in a way. 3. This story hasn't any more holes than any other detective/murder/hoodunnit/mystery/thriller --- they all have holes, the whole lot of them --- only you don't notice because they aren't what these stories are about. 4. The aim of these movies is to keep you watching, goggle-eyed. They're puzzles. 5. Ray and Abby aren't lovers at the beginning: that's why they aren't lovers as events unfold. They don't even know each other. 6. In Texas, you're on your own. It's not like Russia. Well, it is, in a way. 7. This is a five actor movie, not a four-hander. What about Samm-Art? He has a key part. 8. This region of Texas isn't cool. It's hot as hell, and everybody's sweating, unless they're spewing. See the flies feeding off Emmet's face. 9. No Coens film is any better than this. Different? Yes, if you will. As good? Why not. More expensive ? Sure. More creative, more original ? I wouldn't hardly say so. 10. This is a comedy, because it has a happy ending. The bad, the stupid, the sleazy and the bent get theirs: the sweet and innocent stays to collect.

5 out of 5 stars Blood Complicated.......2007-07-14

The Coen Brothers, who ingeniously draw plot lines that come out of a hat, really deliver in `Blood Simple.' At the opening a narrator tells us in this DVD edition, this film is a prototype of the independent movie. It's easy to see why. `Blood Simple is simply one of the best twist of fate movies ever conceived. If you loved 'Fargo' or 'A Simple Plan,' then this movie is a must.

Taking place in Texas, Julian Marty (Dan Hedaya) owns a bar, but keeps most of his tabs on his unfaithful wife (Frances McDormand) who steps out with his closest working associate, Ray (John Getz). "Marty," as he's commonly called, hires a private detective Visser (M. Emmet Walsh) to be his eyes and ears to the infidelity. With great skill, Visser documents the affair, but has an axe to grind against his own employer. A murder takes place, but the complications make the title of this film a tongue-in-cheek misnomer.

Playful, twisty, and ironic, like their other adventures, Joel and Ethan Coen's pre-'Fargo' masterpiece is, if anything, more deft in its plot and execution. Frances McDormand brings her admirable debut with a Southern accent, and M. Emmet Walsh, whose been an able supporting role character, shines in perhaps his finest performance. Suspenseful, entertaining, and rewarding, `Blood Simple' is a cornerstone caper for movie fans.

5 out of 5 stars Blood Simple.......2007-07-06

Filmed on a shoestring budget by Joel Coen and his producer brother Ethan, this heart-pounding homage to 1940s film noir was instantly hailed as a classic of American indie cinema. Featuring Barry Sonnenfeld's innovative camerawork and murky lighting, "Simple" not only tells a dark, disturbing tale of murder, passion, and back-stabbing meanness, it introduces the marvelously talented McDormand and features a brilliant performance by Walsh as a sleazy, audaciously amoral gumshoe. Inspired by the novels of James M. Cain and Jim Thompson, "Blood Simple" is a gutsy, dark-comic debut thriller by the directors of "Fargo" and "The Big Lebowski".

Every dialogue exchange is slow and tedious. Waiting for a pertinent piece of information to drop is an exercise in patience and endurance. The characters are never established, nor developed enough to even like or dislike them or have much understanding of what motivates anything they do.

"Go at your own pace, don't strain!" Alan Finger reminds viewers in the introduction to this Yoga Zone workout. They're words of wisdom for anyone who's ever tried (and failed) to emulate the moves of some perfect-looking human pretzel on what purports to be a "beginners" videotape. In contrast, Finger's gentle, refreshingly detailed Introduction to Yoga begins with basic breathing techniques and moves on to some of the most fundamental poses in any practice, including lunges, twists, cobra, dog, triangle, and even a corpse pose tutorial that comes complete with guided relaxation. (Later tapes in this series build on the asanas taught here, adding more advanced variations and positions.) Two instructors demonstrate different versions of each pose, one for more flexible advanced students and one for less flexible beginners. We even get to see one student topple out of stork pose! Calm, thorough, absolutely unrushed, this is a great tape for those who've never taken a yoga class in their lives. Even experienced students, however, may find that the relaxed pace helps them reach a deeper level of understanding of how body, mind, and breath can work together. Fittingly, the credits roll over Finger and his fellow instructors demonstrating advanced positions of impressive strength and beauty; like the tape itself, it's a perfect introduction to the continuing rewards of yoga practice. --Mary Park

5 out of 5 stars A yoga teacher's perspective.......2007-08-29

This is an excellent program.

Allan Fingers offers very detailed and precise instructions each time I listen to it, I get additional hints and tips.

The program is rather quick paced and ends with an excellent guided relaxation.

After following the video several times and learning the sequence I prefer to do it without the DVD and take long time in the positions.

An amusing aspect of the video is that Allan Finger chose some extraordinarily sexy looking models, "senior yoga instructors", and the camera-person is at times dwelling on the sexy aspects of these "senior instructors" just a tad too long...
Due to this, some of my women friends found the video offensive (perhaps they felt intimidated by these young and sexy as the models).

I highly recommend this program, it does not require any previous knowledge of yoga positions while at the same time, ever very advanced practitioners loved it.

3 out of 5 stars Already seen this.......2007-01-22

The workout itself isn't bad, per se, but it feels incomplete. It is the exact same workout as Flexibility and Tone. Exactly. There is one extra stretch position and the order of the movements is switched around once or twice, but other than that it's the same. Alan Finger even says some of the same lines. (I suppose that's inevitable, after doing dozens of shows and videos). In fact, Flexibility and Tone feels more 'thorough'. That workout leaves you feeling like you really did something, whereas this one leaves you feeling unchallenged and wondering if you just wasted an hour. I'm glad this is really inexpensive these days. Get Flexibility and Tone...and if you already have that one and are determined to get a new Yoga video, don't get this one.

3 out of 5 stars harder than expected.......2007-01-10

I got my yoga dvd today and sat down to view it. I have not done yoga before so need something for beginners. after watching it I have a hard time believing this is a beginners tape. it is long and hard. it will take me forever to get this learned. if you are a beginner I suggest you keep looking.

5 out of 5 stars I hate exercises but I love this DVD!!.......2006-08-26

I need to stress that I really loathe any form of physical exercises. However, after having two babies, being completely out of shape, feeling constantly tried, and having to suffer very strained and sore back almost daily, I know I need a remedy for good. Ever since I was no longer able to visit my chiropractor on a weekly basis, my back has gone further and further out of adjustment and is really starting to negatively impact my emotional health as well. Then I purchased this DVD after reading the reviews here and skeptically tried the whole routine (about 1 hour) at first viewing.

The next day, though my back was still sore, I was not experiencing sharp pain anymore. This was my first experience with the DVD. I felt pretty good for a couple of days and the pain came back. Then two weeks went by without trying to do the exercises. My back was hurting me so much that it was causing me stomachaches. (I know it sounds odd but not so in reality since our body parts are very much linked).

I finally broke down and did the yoga exercises yesterday. I started to feel better half way through it and by the end of the routine, I was so relaxed that I was sound asleep on the floor! I repeated the exercises at night the second time. Today, I have very minor, dull pain in my back but I feel so much more energized and light!

One more thing I need to mention is that: though I am very much inclined to seek alternative/ homeopathic/ holistic, etc... form of healing, I dislike the new-age-ish garbage that sometimes goes along with this community. I was afraid that I'll be watching some ugly, long-haired weirdo chanting a foreign language, preaching new age spirituality while trying to teach yoga. The instructor, Alan Finger, did none of that. He is very much a gentleman, likable, humorous, and though long-haired, he's not at all ugly and weird. His descriptions of the breathing technique and the poses are clear and concise. His constant remainder and emphasis on completing the breathing while attempting the various poses are a tremendous help to a beginner, both in yoga and exercises in general.

Anyway, I hope my clumsily put together review actually goes to show how much I've benefited from this DVD and I would definitely recommend this to anyone who has an interest in the healing power of yoga.

5 out of 5 stars Great program for beginners and those returning to yoga........2006-03-18

After not practicing yoga for 20+ years, I have recently returned to practicing yoga. Although I was an intermediate yoga practitioner back then, I knew I needed to start at the beginning so I bought the Premiere Collection from Yoga Zone. What a gem it is!

This is a gentle beginning yoga program that, at the same time, is challenging for those of us who are very out of shape or have never done yoga. Alan Finger is a very low key instructor who does not get into the viewer's face, but at the same time succeeds in giving clear and thorough instruction for each pose.

Anyone who finds this program boring just doesn't understand the nature of this style of yoga. If you have never done yoga before, or if you are accustomed to power yoga, you need to understand that there are different styles of yoga. This style of yoga is done is a slow, almost contemplative style that concentrates on correct form and on breathing. If you do the postures correctly, you can spend a lifetime doing them and still find small adjustments to make every time you do the posture. The object of this type of yoga is to assume the posture, and make small corrections to your posture while also concentrating on your breathing. The goal is to occupy the mind with the minutiae of correct posture and breathing so that the mind is stilled and the practitioner is immersed in the present, rather than letting your mind run on about other things. This is not a simple exercise, even for the simplest posture. If you are bored, it's because you are not doing it right, plain and simple.

Amazon.com essential video

Most horror films exist in a fantasy movie-world safely removed from our existence, populated by zombie-like killers and psychopathic madmen. The power of Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer is its chilling placement in the mundane existence of everyday life. Michael Rooker plays Henry not as a raving psychopath but as the frumpy guy next door, a drifter who takes out his frustrations on random victims and escalates his body count after teaming up with the violent ex-con Otis (Tom Towles). Though not exceedingly gory in light of the excesses of such fantasy horrors as the Friday the 13th and Nightmare on Elm Street series, director John McNaughton's straightforward presentation and documentary-like style creates a chilling realism that many viewers will find hard to watch. McNaughton neither comments on nor flinches at the brutal violence, which reaches its apex in a disturbing camcorder-eye view of a particularly sadistic murder of a middle-class couple, with Henry and Otis smiling through the deed as they record it for their continued pleasure. Henry straddles the line between True Crime (though fictional, the story was inspired by the confessions of real life serial killer Henry Lee Lucas) and horror, a bleak, brutal kind of terror for a generation deadened by the escalating outrageousness of movie murders and nightly news crime scene clips. --Sean Axmaker

5 out of 5 stars All the Things You Are.......2007-09-08

I first saw this movie about 10 years ago and I remember being impressed with the sheer audacity and outrageousness of it. Now, though "Henry" is certainly brutal and bloody, the tone of it is definitely warmer, mellower (decidedly, this may have more to do with me and my current state of mind as compared with 10 years ago...but be that as it may) and Michael Rooker (as Henry) is not only a vessel of depravity and feral misanthropy, he is also a fully rounded, though warped for sure, human being. In fact Rooker's performance is so thoughtful, his motives for murder so crystal clear that Henry is somehow transformed into a classical tragic hero: we can actually understand him....even empathize with him and this is a major feat on the part of both Rooker and director John Naughton. How do you turn a monster into a living, breathing human being? You write and perform him as if he is those very things. You give him a back-story that could plausibly bring him to unrepentant murder and you plot him on a course that naturally flows out of that back-story: very simple in theory but not often witnessed on the screen.
"Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer" is a masterpiece of condensed, concise, spare and unrepentant mayhem. That it also has it's head on straight and it's motivations, though bloody and graphic, clear and motivated by natural common sense, only make it more of a revelation than it already is.

5 out of 5 stars American Film Classic.......2007-07-05

This film is brilliant. Its subject matter is unnerving, but it is presented in a way that draws one in and never lets the viewer go.

The violence in this film is done in a why that makes the view imagine what is going on. The scene of a murder of a family as seen through a view finder is both amazing and shocking.

I am amazed that this film is not on more top best films of all time.

2 out of 5 stars dull.......2007-06-26

This movie was so predictable.Henry is a stereo-type,his girl-friend is stoopid, his side kick probably has bad breath. No interesting insights and angles. He's just the same 'serial killer' we could find on cop programmes on t.v.

5 out of 5 stars PERFECTION IN LESS THAN 90 MINUTES.......2007-06-19

see, horror movies can have charactor developement, humor and plot without having to wait 75 minutes for the gore.m rooker nailed this and i thought it would stereotype him as a maniac forever.t towles also makes the perfect, demented side kick (unfortunately,he was doomed to be stereotyped).

based loosely on real life serial killer henry lee lucas (he of a supposed 150 kills) H;POASK begins with a bang.we see the aftermath of a couple of vicious acts and then are whipped to real time.henry hooks up with simple minded, fellow ex-con otis (towles) and share an apartment.things get complicated when otis' sister comes to visit.shes a stripper whos running from an abusive husband looking to restart her life (little does she know !!!).

while henry is clearly uneducated,he has some sense of how to blend in.hes illiterate yet wise enough to get away with murder.at times,he even shows restraint and the ability to not be a murderer.he shares his wisdom of getting away with murder with otis.otis makes him look like einstein in comparison.this will definitely be just as good 20 more years from now.

for some ungodly reason, gollywood thought it was a good idea to make a ''sequal'' to this.i will not mention the title but will compare it to jaws 3d,godfather 3,exorcist 2-the heritic, starship troopers 2,speed 2....you get the idea.

***SPOILER THOUGHT***
why was henry upset at otis raping his own sister only to chop her up later ?!?!?!?

5 out of 5 stars Truly terrifying.......2007-06-06

Henry-portrait of a serial killer just might be the scarriest film i have seen.. Specifically because of the films real nature (almost cinema verite) you cannot dismiss it and it becomes a real chilling possibility.. I have not been quite as freaked out since the first time i saw pasolini's 'salo' a film which depicted fascist sexual and violent opression in a real style.. The camera does not flinch nor does it prepare us with any kind of a traditional warning so common-place in horror movies.. It does not follow a formula it just seems to present us with violence and death in their most real and disturbing forms.. This is what i like about the movie it doesn't gloss over or sugar coat anything it's as if it is saying this is what it is... the reason for such an approach might have been the miniscule 100,000 dollar budget - but the results are far better than nearly every big budget horror or suspense film i have ever seen - indeed it just might be the best horror film since psycho.. The film proves that the simple approach is very often the best.. and it proves that so-called amateur actors are often capable of incredible and emotional performances (if they are directed as expertly as they were here).. So watch Henry at your own risk.. it is very disturbing but very rewarding..

Alan Finger gently guides you through 60 minutes of basic yoga postures with beginner and advanced modifications (two instructors skillfully demonstrate both levels). You'll need a mat, one or two towels, and strap or belt to assist in certain poses. The best part of this video is Finger's specific and explicit instruction on breathing techniques to build energy and heat in the body's system. He cues each breath, and you can watch the instructor's rib cage expand and rise on the inhale, release and lower on the exhale. With breathing as a focus, a dozen yoga postures are introduced and practiced, including potted-palm series, cat, down dog, mountain, sunburst and worship, proud warrior, scale, and cow's head. Many of these poses are also practiced in Finger's Introduction to Yoga video, although Yoga Zone: Flexibility and Tone offers more advanced variations and poses. If you are interested in the mental and physical benefits of yoga--increased flexibility, conditioning and toning of muscles, stress reduction, and relaxation of the mind--this video is a keeper. --Christine Aiken

4 out of 5 stars Good beginner tape.......2007-08-23

I like this tape. I would like it more if it included more backbend poses. I don't like speeding through poses because I also do aerobic dance and step for heart health. I do yoga for flexibility and strength. I do one hour of yoga a day and I alternate hour-long Alan Finger tapes with Yoga Journal (Rodney Yee, Suzanne Deason, and Patricia Walden) tapes.

3 out of 5 stars Good for Beginner's who like lengthy instruction.......2007-06-24

This is a great dvd for those new to yoga as Alan Finger directs 2 women while they do the poses while he speaks.
Other reviewers wrote the poses, so I'll just add, if you like lengthy instruction above & beyond the basics & no silence, this is for you. If you like less talking, try Gaiam's or other beginner yoga dvds.
Yoga Zone relies heavily on using mats, straps (you can use a belt instead), blocks & blankets. Don't feel you have to go bankrupt & buy these in order to do the poses correctly. Just do the best you can & through practice you'll get better.. it's doing it that feels wonderful, being aware of your body & getting the circulation going, not concentrating on being perfect, just don't do anything that is painful.

5 out of 5 stars Yoga Zone Review.......2006-07-04

We are in our mid-50's just trying yoga for the first time. We loved this video. We could actually do it and felt great afterwards.

5 out of 5 stars Great for beginners, but not first-timers.......2006-03-28

I just recently bought this video and can't believe the difference it's made! I'm more flexible than I've ever been, and my legs are firm and strong again.
While this is a good beginner's video in terms of learning the postures effectively, I don't recommend buying this as a 'first-time' video, as some of the postures may be a bit tricky or confusing. However, if you're in the process of learning, this tape is for you.
This routine doesn't do much for abs or upper body toning, but your legs will get worked. And, it definitely delivers on the flexiblity. A great program!

Yoga may build strength and tone muscles, but there's much more to this ancient art than just a trendy way to get fit. In this two-session tape, Alan Finger introduces some of the techniques yogis have used for centuries to quiet the mind and experience extended states of peace. He begins each session with what he calls "premeditative" asanas, physical poses like Dandasana or the potted-palm series that prepare the body for the intensive stillness of meditation. In the first session, he then concentra
