Salma Hayek makes up for many bad movies with her fierce performance in this sumptuous film. Hayek plays the Mexican surrealist painter Frida Kahlo, whose tempestuous life with her unfaithful husband, muralist Diego Rivera (Alfred Molina), drives the story of Frida. Maverick director Julie Taymor (Titus, the Broadway stage production of The Lion King) pulls out a wealth of gorgeous visuals to capture everything from the horrific bus accident that damaged Kahlo's spine to her and Rivera's trip to New York City, where Rivera's political leanings ruptured a commission from the Rockefeller family. Though the script spends too much time telling us how great Frida's painting is (rather than trusting in the power of the images themselves), Taymor's dynamic energy and Kahlo's forceful personality give Frida genuine emotional impact. The superb cast includes Roger Rees, Valeria Golino, Ashley Judd, Geoffrey Rush, Antonio Banderas, and Edward Norton. --Bret Fetzer

Whoopi Goldberg plays a Reno lounge singer who hides out as a nun when her villainous boyfriend (Harvey Keitel) goes gunning for her. Maggie Smith is the mother superior who has to cope with Whoopi's unorthodox behavior, but the cute script turns the tables and shows how the latter energizes the stodgy convent with song and attitude. A real crowd-pleaser and a perfect vehicle for Goldberg, this is a happy experience all around. --Tom Keogh

5 out of 5 stars Lasting Fun.......2007-09-16

"Sister Act,"(1992), a big hit in its time for Disney's Touchstone Studio, is now 25 years old, and surely worth a closer look. Its plot -- script by Joseph Howard--is, of course, lighter than air, concerning one Deloris Van Cartier, second rate Reno lounge singer (Whoopi Goldberg), who is unlucky enough to catch her married, mobbed-up boyfriend Vince La Rocca (Harvey Keitel), committing an execution-style murder. If she wishes to live to testify against him, she's got to go on the run, and she does -- to a failing, out-of-touch San Francisco convent run by Dame Maggie Smith as its Mother Superior. The first thing to say is the script's not only funny, it's also witty -- particularly in the battles of wits between Goldberg's character, rechristened Sister Mary Clarence for convent purposes, and Maggie Smith's Mother Superior. And the wit has held up. The second thing to say is the movie's celebrated Motown musical interludes have held up even better, and that's no accident.

To begin with, the movie was produced for Disney by New York-born Scott Rudin, who has a sure hand with a light film. You could easily think the lead part was written for Goldberg, as it fits her like a glove, but in fact, it wasn't. It was written for Bette Midler, then the studio's favorite musical/comedy star: the New York-born Goldberg just made it hers. Furthermore, Keitel is frequently accused of a lazy performance in this movie: but when the Brooklyn-born actor gets a chance to sink his teeth into a line like "bupkis--" that's Brooklynite/Yiddish for "nothing" to you, he delivers it with gusto. And the picture introduced the winning Kathy Najimi, as Sister Mary Patrick, to the audience.

But Disney's greatest luck, in regard to this film, has to be the trio of talented men, all born in the greater New York area, who made the musical interludes as infectious as they are. Its director, Emile Ardolino, born in 1943 in Maspeth, Queens, unfortunately passed from us, in 1993, in Bel Air, of AIDS. But it was well-known that he could do magic with musicals. He won an Oscar in 1984 for a documentary, "He Makes Me Feel Like Dancin'." And he's further credited with "Dirty Dancin'," and "Gypsy," two multiple award-winning musicals that also haven't lost their appeal. To arrange the music, the studio kept the musical director of Bette Midler's stage shows, the New Jersey-born Marc Shaiman. We now know that he, too, is extraordinarily talented musically: he's recently written "Hairspray," that's won Grammy, Tony, and Emmy Awards, and is also more than likely to pick up an Oscar or two this year. Finally, the musical scenes were choreographed by Lester Wilson, an experienced man with a Motown connection: among his other triumphs, he choreographed "Saturday Night Fever." You just gotta say that these guys couldn't put a foot wrong, musically-speaking, and it shows -- will continue to show-- on the screen.

5 out of 5 stars Hail Mary and Holy rockin'.......2007-08-30

What a riot! A black cabaret motown singer witnesses her boyfriend killing someone - 'I've never seen a dead guy before! - I mean, you see the odd body on the freeway, but that's it'. She ends up under witness protection at a convent. She is predictably bored with the monastic life, but soon finds her niche - taking over the dilapidated choir. She fuses religion with the spirit of motown and gets the nuns singing. They prepare for a visit of the pope - but the mob are also on her trail. Which will prevail in the swinging and thrilling musical climax?

4 out of 5 stars A fun, family-friendly movie!.......2007-06-17

If you're looking for a fun, family-friendly movie to watch on a lazy Sunday, this is it. Whoopi Goldberg was made for this movie with her great acting and quirky lines.

So what's this movie about? A lounge singer named Delores has to go into hiding when her (ex)boyfriend comes after her after shooting someone in front of her eyes. Delores must become the complete opposite of what she is. She must disguise herself as a nun. While dealing with the extremely early wakeup times, the crazy nuns, and not being able to do things she's used to doing, she finds herself as the leader of the church's choir. She ends up turning the once awful choir into a spectacle (even the pope has to see it for himself!). This movie shows Ms. Goldberg having to cope with her life as a nun while staying away from the man who is trying to kill her.

So what's to like about this movie? It's just a fun, little movie to watch that'll pass a couple of hours leaving you entertained. I wasn't expecting much going into it because it's not meant to be an Oscar-worthy film but you'll be really surprised that the storyline is actually decent and original. The nuns are funny and kids will get a kick out of them.

What's not to like? Not much. As I said above, it's not supposed to be a ground-breaking movie so don't expect much out of it.

Be sure to watch this movie (along with the sequel) and add it to your movie collection!

5 out of 5 stars Pure Fun!.......2007-02-09

This movie is Fun, Fun, FUN! The music is irresistible and it delivers laughs every minute. The story follows a low-rent casino singer, Deloris Van Cartier (Whoopi), who witnesses her mobster boyfriend, Vince LaRocca (Harvey Keitel) muder an employee. She goes straight to the police, who hide her from Vince in a convent while preparing for his trial. The Mother Superior (Maggie Smith), puts up with Deloris's unorthodox behavior long enough for her to turn the convent's chior into a swinging, soulfull hit. But when the group gets rave reviews, Vince and his goons go hunting for Deloris. Will they find her?
This movie is purely halarious! Whoopi and Maggie Smith are brilliant, and all of the acting is awesome! The music is toe-tapping (you must buy the soundtrack), and the story is fun! You must watch this movie!

I loved this movie and have seen it five times. It charts the generations of a hispanic family in Los Angeles and gives a rich insight into Mexican culture. It's funny, sad, absorbing, and very well acted. For anyone interested in Mexican culture, it's a "must see", and would be especially interesting to anyone living in Los Angeles.

5 out of 5 stars Review for "My Family".......2007-05-13

Not only was this film well done and very entertaining, it was perfect for use in my "Racial, Ethnic, & Gender Relations" course at a local community college.

5 out of 5 stars My Family - Mi Familia.......2007-03-15

If you are Mexican American or Latino for that matter and were born and raised in California, then you can definately relate to this great tale. And for those of you, any race, who are family oriented, or were born to a big family then this movie is for you too. My Family if a wonderful demonstration of how families have unconditional love for one another, stick together, and are proud of each other matter what. It also shows the struggles of immigrant parents coming to our great country to make a better life for their family. This movie has it's comedy, drama, and action beautifully orchestrated, and also a great soundtrack. This movie is a must see by all.

5 out of 5 stars great history of Latios in South West America.......2007-01-09

This movie is a great example of what life was like over the last couple centuries for those Latios living in the South West region of the United States. Some of who without moving went from being Mexicans to living in a new country without the benefits of being a citizen. A great example of the struggles raising a family during that time.

5 out of 5 stars Mi Familia.......2007-01-04

One of the best Latino oriented films i've seen besides 'Selena' and 'La Bamba'. The story is very good and the movie is nice to see especially if you're a Latino. It's been a movie i can enjoy with my family, which is very rare. The DVD features aren't much, but I recommend that people see this movie.

4 out of 5 stars Not quite complete........2007-09-08

I was very happy to see this film which I first saw with my Dad back in the 50s. It still holds up as a powerful story about passion and devotion to a cause and to the power of charismatic leadership. I was only disappointed to see that the final symbolic image of Zapata's white horse running free in the hills, had been left off and the film abruptly terminated. Oh well.

4 out of 5 stars A history lesson........2007-06-30

The review by 'Maxi' shows the value of movies like "Viva Zapata". Most people, Americans, have very little knowledge of important moments in the history of our neighbors to the south. Or Canada for that matter. Brando, as his usual brooding self is outshone by Anthony Quinn. Nobody plays a Mexican better than Mr Quinn. The storyline is fairly close to the true historical life of the title character. I've seen several Mexican movies about Zapata but I like this one better. Mostly for the production values I think.

For years, on the radio, I listened to "La Hora National" They had 1/2 hour plays about historical events from the past. I wish that we had something like that. It pays be aware of historical events that developed the character of our neighbors. I'd like our people to be more informed about heros from our past, too. Most Mexicans, even after many years of living here, are still Mexican at heart. This is a very good movie about a worthwhile subject.

5 out of 5 stars A True Story of Mexican Revolution........2007-01-18

Actually this was the film that triggered my interest on the Mexican Revolution.
I've seen it many times and always found new details to take into account. As I read more and more on the subject my appreciation of this movie increases.
It presents the viewer with a big fresco of the Revolution that convulsed that country for more than ten years.
I admire the strange capacity of the film to show condensed in each scene, many key issues of why and how the Revolution exploded and continue growing along the years, with an immitigable fire.

Director Elia Kazan has been criticized for his appearance on the Un-American Activities Committee that lead many people related to cinematography to be ostracized.
This been said, regardless of his political stand, he had directed many great Oscar winner films as: "Gentleman's Agreement" (1947), "Streetcar Named Desire" (1951); "East of Eden" (1955); "Splendor on the Grass" (1961) and the present "Viva Zapata!" (1952).
He had directed two "Movie Icons" as Marlon Brando (more than once) and James Dean obtaining the best from them. All his films explored the inner depth of human soul with unflinching stare.

Since the first shot, showing a very accurate characterization of President Porfirio Diaz (Fay Roope) and giving an inkling of the type of ruler he was, an enormous gallery of Mexican historical figure are made known.
Francisco Madero's (Harold Gordon) personality and idealistic naïveté is depicted with very few strokes.
Huerta's (Frank Silvera) wickedness and treachery is shown too.

Above all of them Emiliano Zapata's figure impersonated by an inspired Marlon Brando stands with an epic height. His ideals, stubbornness, charisma and internal sorrows leading him to the final sacrifice, are shown convincingly.

A special mention must be done of Anthony Quinn's superb performance, which entitled him to win the Oscar. He not only has the physique du role, but an internal conviction to give flesh to Eufemio, Zapata's brother, a semi cultured and brave centaur, product of his times and environment.

Josefa (Jean Peters) the fiancée and later wife of Emiliano shows all the traits of a high middle class woman romantically requested by a rural hero. The scene played with Brando in the church's atrium is wonderful.
The only character that gives a discordant note is the fictional Fernando, representing an addict to revolution for revolution in itself.

Joseph MacDonald's black and white photography is very beautiful. Steinbeck's screenplay has a solid internal coherence that shows all along the film.

A Classic Movie not diminished by the more than fifty years passed.

5 out of 5 stars Poetic, powerful and moving..........2007-01-17

Elia Kazan will be remembered as the director of some of the most vivid film performances of the fifties... In 'Viva Zapata', Kazan's 'Method' style of acting is applied to John Steinbeck's screenplay that power inevitably corrupts, with Brando again charismatic as the doomed Mexican revolutionary...

Kazan, not only shows us the extremely unpleasant world of poverty where life is hard, short and brutish, but also the story of the agrarian rebel who was Pancho Villa's first revolutionary ally...

Kazan paints a convincing emotional portrait of a mythical figure, who is considered as the 'Wind that swept Mexico.' Kazan explores a facet of the Mexican history, describing the reasons for the revolution fought by Zapata, and works on basic emotions as passion, anger, fear, aggression, ignorance and wisdom...

Brando projects the dedication and the anguish of an inspiring rebel... He portrays the illiterate Mexican peasant revolutionary who for ten years led Guerilla uprisings against dictators and presidents... Brando plays the part with fervor and passion, even transforming his features with special makeup and fake mustache to look amazingly like the Guerilla leader... For his performance, he was nominated for his third consecutive Oscar, but Gary Cooper won for 'High Noon'.

Anthony Quinn gives an effective portrayal of Eufemio Zapata , the swaggering, lecherous, bullying brother, and wins his first Academy Award as Best Supporting Actor... Through his consummate acting skills, Quinn creates in Eufemio a strongly characterization which, despite its brevity, was not overshadowed by Brando's Zapata...

Jean Peters portrays the typical educated girl of the village who falls in love with the wild man of the hills and marries him...

The film begins near the close of the 34th year reign of President Porfirio Diaz (Fay Roope) where a delegation of Indians from the State of Morelos have come to the capital for an audience with the great dictator... There they make known their strong objections over the stealing of their lands by the wealthy, powerful estate barons... Diaz addresses them paternally and instructs them they must examine their boundaries before they bring legal action, something he knows they are incapable of doing...

Burning with a sense of injustice, the simple Emiliano Zapata directs the president's attention to this point, requesting his consent to cross the railing of wires...

President Diaz was disturbed by the persistent Zapata and on the sheet of paper listing his visitors, he unpleasantly circles the name of this one humble man who has really came for 'something.'

Some time later Emiliano and his brother lead the farmers in a general inspection through their expropriated fields and as they do so, a squad of Diaz militia attack them, shooting and cutting down men, women and children indiscriminately...

Zapata and some of his followers fight back, and retreat to a mountain hideout... There they are located by a sly political agitator, a newspaperman named Fernando Aguirre (Joseph Wiseman), who brings news of Francisco Madero (Harold Gordon), exiled in Texas...

Zapata sends his friend Pablo (Lou Gilbert) to interview Madero and find out if he is worth following...

One day, and in a church, Zapata risks his life to speak of truth, and of love... But the pretty brunette Josefa (Jean Peters) rejects him, even though she admits to being attracted to him, and tells him he must improve his social position before she might think out his proposal...

When Espejo (Florenz Ameo) refuses to consider him as a suitor to his daughter, Zapata angrily leaves his house... He is immediately arrested by policemen and led away with a rope around his neck...

As the mounted police walk him behind their horses through the countryside they are gradually joined by peasants, who silently march along... The group increases into a huge number of farmers... Zapata comes to a realization, that the peasants have chosen him as their leader and that he has no course but to accept... Destiny has singled him out...

'Viva Zapata!' received 5 Academy Award Nominations...It is a greatly entertaining film, excitingly directed by Kazan who made its action sequences so intense and who permitted his actors full scope in developing their characters...

5 out of 5 stars negleted masterpiece.......2006-12-28

Viva Zapata is one of the three or four movies that made Marlon Brando the best actor of his generation -- "the Men", "Streetcar---", "On the Waterfront" and "Godfather 1", being among the others. Scripted by Nobelist John Steinbeck, directed by Elia Kazan, featuring bravura performances by Anthony Quinn and Joseph Wiseman, and winner of many international and US awards for acting, directing and scrit, Viva Zapata should rank among the top 100 movies (it did make the NYT's recent top 1000). Yet,it's been sadly neglected -- not even released on DVD is the USA, and to my knowledge unseen on TV. Viva Zapata is a masterpiece lost for suceeding generations.

Bruce Willis turns on the charm in The Whole Ten Yards, the sequel to the surprisingly popular The Whole Nine Yards. Willis returns as Jimmy "the Tulip," a former professional hitman, now living in Mexico with his bride Jill (Amanda Peet, Igby Goes Down), while his former neighbor Oz (Matthew Perry) lives happily with Jimmy's ex-wife Cynthia (Natasha Henstridge, Species). When mobster Lazlo Gogolak (Kevin Pollak, The Usual Suspects) kidnaps Cynthia to get revenge on Jimmy, Oz has to seek out Jimmy for help--only to eventually discover that there's some incomprehensible secret plan at work. The Whole Ten Yards was created purely because the previous movie made money; the sequel makes not an iota of sense. Willis coasts by on raw charisma, everyone else flounders (Henstridge seems completely bored). Fans of the first movie, however, may enjoy revisiting these antic characters. --Bret Fetzer

Description

Thanks to falsified dental records, retired hitman Jimmy "The Tulip" Tudeski (Bruce Willis) faked his own death and has taken up a new line of work as a homemaker for his wife Jill (Amanda Peet), a novice assassin who has yet to pull off a clean hit. Suddenly, an uninvited and unwelcome connection to their past appears. It's their former neighbor Oz (Matthew Perry) who begs them to help rescue his wife from the Hungarian mob. The mission mounts into Mafioso mayhem, in this screwball sequel to the 2000 hit comedy The Whole Nine Yards.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Just plain funny.......2007-09-01

I never realized Mathew Perry is such a funny guy. And so physical prat fall funny. Just so off the cuff funny.

4 out of 5 stars "You fell down the stairs...".......2006-06-07

I love this movie for a few reasons. One of those reasons is that I'm a HUGE fan of the previous film 'The Whole Nine Yards' to which this serves as the sequel. The next is the fact that Bruce Willis is one of the best of the underrated actors out there and captivates my attention with every performance he gives. The third, and biggest reason I love this film is a little scene where Jimmy (Willis) and Oz (Perry) visit the local pub and get a little (or a lot) drunk. The whole scene is worth the price of the rental. I guess since it reminds me so much of myself and my friends (I'm an emotional drunk) and the whole morning after thing is so the way it would happen. All in all the laughs are there, some are forced and the gags can be a bit cheesy. 'The Whole Nine Yards' was a far superior film, but this sequel is not without it's moments and Bruce Willis and Matthew Perry are a great comic team. Bruce can tackle everything from action to comedy to drama and should be recognized a little more for that. This may not end up your favorite title but it won't be your least. The premise follows Oz and Jimmy as they try and rescue Oz's wife (Jimmy's ex) from a mob boss trying to get revenge on Jimmy. Amanda Peet plays Jimmy's wife whose fed up with the softy Jimmy has become and is trying to be the tough contract killer that Jimmy once was. There are subplots and a twist at the end that makes this more than a no-brainer, but the fact still remains that the film makes little sense...but it doesn't really matter. Just sit back, relax, don't think about it and enjoy it for what it is...or at least watch the drunk scene, then pop in 'The Whole Nine Yards' and really enjoy yourself.

4 out of 5 stars Sit back, refuse to analyze, and enjoy.......2006-04-04

This film is the sequel to "The Whole Nine Yards," but I saw this movie first. I didn't even know there was a prequel.

The plot: No don't go there. Just don't. You won't find anything coherent, and hunting for it might just spoil the fun.

The cast: Bruce Willis is Jimmy, a retired hitman, in the witness protection program, living in Mexico. Jimmy might have gone a little crazy, but it might be an act. You never find out, for sure, but it doesn't matter. Amanda Peet is Jill, his girlfriend, who wants to be a hit-person. Will she succeed? You don't find out, but it doesn't matter. Natasha Henstridge is Cynthia, Jimmy's ex-wife and Oz's current wife. Is she happy to be away from Jimmy? It doesn't matter. Matthew Perry is Oz, a successful dentist. Does he understand what's going on? No! But, neither will you. It doesn't matter. Kevin Pollack is a Hungarian mob-boss with a quirky accent and a penchant for mangling slang ("It's a piece of pie [not cake]"), and for slapping anyone who dares to notice it or comment.

What does matter? This is a zany, fast-paced comedy, that is equal parts "The Godfather," "The Sting," and something by the Marx Brothers (as directed by the Coen Brothers). It's just weird. It doesn't make much sense, but I stopped trying to make it do that.

Matthew Perry is not my favorite actor, but I really liked him as Oz. Oz was perpetually lost, and his motto could've been, "Will somebody please tell me what's going on?!" I felt the same way, but I just did what he did: he just kept treading water, surviving, and trying to enjoy the ride. That's what I did, and I did enjoy this ride.

5 out of 5 stars Method in madness.......2006-03-06

This is an extremely unusual film in that it is better than the first one - nine yards- which was very good. It has only one disadvantage : you may need, or rather I needed to view it twice to understand what was going on. Not a real disadvantage - I just viewed it for the third time and enjoyed it even more.

2 out of 5 stars A Paltry Shadow of the Original.......2005-07-24

Thanks to falsified dental records supplied by his former neighbor Nicholas Oz Oseransky, retired hitman Jimmy The Tulip Tudeski now spends his days compulsively cleaning his house and perfecting his culinary skills with his wife, Jill, a purported assassin who has yet to pull off a clean hit. Suddenly, an uninvited and unwelcome connection to their past unexpectedly shows up on Jimmy and Jill's doorstep: it's Oz, and he's begging them to help him rescue his wife from the Hungarian mob. To complicate matters even further, the men, who are out to get Oz, are led by Lazlo Gogolak, a childhood rival of Jimmy's and another notorious hitman. Oz, Jimmy and Jill will have to go the whole nine yards--and then some--to manage the mounting Mafioso mayhem.
There isn't much about this film to enjoy. I was hoping it would be a lot funnier than it was, but I just didn't laugh at anything except Kevin Pollack's character who was hard to understand most of the time. I had no problem with the cast, I enjoyed all of their performances. Especially Kevin Pollack and Natasha Henstridge who really made the film at least somewhat watchable. If only Bruce Willis could have had more funny lines, or Matthew Perry been a little funnier, or if Amanda Peet...wait there's nothing wrong with her. Anyway, I can only recommend this to someone who likes the cast but not necessarily the story, otherwise, this movie gets a 5 out of 10 because they did try...to some degree.

Point of No Return is one of those Hollywood remakes of a European hit in which one can visualize a committee of studio executives sitting around and saying, "Okay, we know what made the original film unique and different and fun. How can we make that same movie and do exactly the opposite?" For-hire director John Badham (Saturday Night Fever) took La Femme Nikita, Luc Besson's undeniably sexy, original, and kitschy French film about a female assassin, and translated it into a calculating, mechanistic American thriller with no distinctive style. Bridget Fonda gamely plays the willowy street punk who becomes a high-society killer, but once that provocative irony is in place, the movie is pretty much a series of by-the-numbers action set pieces. Until, that is, Dermot Mulroney shows up as a love interest; but even that twist can't save this film. You're much better off with the original, subtitles and all. --Tom Keogh

4 out of 5 stars Americanized _La Femme Nikita_.......2007-06-06

Fun treatment of the French Noir Moderne classic _La Femme Nikita_, without any pretensions of grandeur. This film clearly needs some fine-print in the credits stating "we only did it for the money," but is a much more light-hearted & trendy take on the darker & more brooding French original. They're both excellent films, but PoNR being a better "movie & a pizza" choice while the original is perhaps better reserved for the serious film buffs out there. There's whole fan sites dedicated to this movie, largely due to Bridget Fonda's excellent work in injecting life back into what was essentially a story that had been "sanitized for American audiences" by an idiot-run big-budget Hollywood movie machine. Oh well, you can rarely go wrong underestimating the standards of the American public, but they almost did so when dumbing-down LFN. Fortunately, the actors & director on PoNR did a great job & by giving everything they had, brought an otherwise eviscerated cinematic story back to life. Kudos!

1 out of 5 stars Do not waste your time or money, see the original.......2007-03-06

Do not waste your time or money, see the original. Once in awhile, a remake of a movie from another culture works; for example, Seven Samurai becomes "Magnificant Seven" -- Most of the time, the remake is trash. The original "La Femme Nikita" is a great movie: exciting with a strong political viewpoint; this version is simply Hollywood pablum.

5 out of 5 stars action, romance a winner.......2007-01-21

Bridget Fonda is outstanding in this role. Good mix of action and romance. I have recommended it to several friends and they all love it too.
I also "love Nina".

2 out of 5 stars I've seen wayyyy better... even Fonda's hotness couldn't save it.......2006-12-01

I have never saw the original Nikita merely because its hard to find. I settled with the American remake as a last resort insted. It can't be that bad its got a few legendary actors in it like Gabriel Byrne, Harvey Keitel & Anne Bancroft in it. Not to mention my childhood dream woman Bridget Fonda. Damn is she sexy. But boy was I so wrong.

Anyways, the film is very violent for all the wrong reasons. Has swearing for all the wrong reasons. Even a drug addict like Fonda wouldn't mouth off everytime she opens her mouth. Thats not the girl I fell for. The pace is every sloppy. Its hard to believe how many holes in the screenplay there are for such a simple story. What is the major problem is its lack of plot. You just sit there after her missions not knowing what will happen. Its unpredicable in a bad way. There are no twists off any kind. I found the ending quite stupid. It seemed like an easy way out because the movie was almost at its 2 hour point. After the credits I felt dissapointed.

As for the actors. The beautiful Bridget Fonda puts in a good one in my book. Her blank stares are quite annoying but her sexy angry look works so well for this movie. Gabriel Byrne one of favourites puts in a kind but strict performance as he gradually becomes a father/kinda love interest figure to Fonda. Who wouldn't fall in love with her? The two work well together I'll give you that. R.I.P Anne Bancroft, forever Mrs. Robinson to me, is also scrict but very understanding to Fonda. Its also good to see her in films now that she passed away around 6 years ago I think. Finally Harvey Keitel, good in his early career is very dull at this point but since his playing a character who is dull and coldhearted, lets nothing get in his way, has no attachments and is plain evil works for this movie I guess. You see how generous I am to the actors. I could be mean to them for being in a so-so movie but I like them too much to say bad things about them. Oh did I mention I think Bridget Fonda is sexy.

4 out of 5 stars A Surprisingly Very Good Remake: American Style!.......2006-10-15

I have seen, "La Femme Nikita," and it is a very good film. However, "Point Of No Return," is also a very good film. More importantly, it holds its own very well. One of the main characters is (Bridget Fonda) as the assassin working for a spy agency that you are never really sure about. Are they working in the best interests of the country? Or are they somewhere on the fringe working as a rogue agency within the CIA? Their loyalties are never really delved into. However, one thing is for sure; they are in the business of assassination. And it is the way the agency recruits their assassins that make this an interesting film. [no spoilers]

Enter the main protagonist portrayed by (Bridget Fonda). Fonda has found herself in a very difficult situation [no spoilers]. Moreover, it concerns a matter of life or death. Therefore, she feels compelled to work for this agency: even though she continously wants out of it. (Gabriel Byrne) portrays the agent in charge of her assassinations. He is an unsympathetic character, and you get the feeling that he himself was pulled into the agency in much the same way as Fonda. However, my favorite character is played by (Harvey Keitel), known simply as 'the cleaner'. He is an agent who cleans up the mistakes that members of the agency create. There are some really shocking scenes with him. I highly recommend the film. Don't compare it with the other, they are different, and both deserving of praise. Recommended!

5 out of 5 stars This movie is a crack up.......2007-08-24

This movie is fun, different. I have liked since the very first time I saw it on HBO all those years ago. I haven't seen it in a long time and am thrilled to find it again. Total entertainment. Love this. Donna

2 out of 5 stars This movie isn't that great........2006-06-24

I was an extra in this movie, and I was really excited to see it in the theatre. But I was really disappointed. I thought it was a dud. But some people like it, so maybe it's me...

4 out of 5 stars Funny stuff even after all these years! Underrated comic gem!.......2006-03-11

I remember seeing this in the theaters as a kid way back in 1980 (OK, now I officially feel OLD!)...anyway, this is a small, slight, yet hysterically funny and very smart comedy that somehow has fallen off the radar for most audiences - similar to Dolly, Jane, and Lily in "9 to 5," Jane, Jessica, and Susan make a terrific trio of would-be thieves trying to steal a load of cash from the "money ball" in a Pacific Northwest Mall. With cameos from Fred Willard, Eddie Albert, Richard Benjamin, and Dabney Coleman, the entire cast, the screenplay, the direction, and the tacky details of late 70s/early 80s middle-class America are all dead-on hilarious! If they can go ahead and ruin "Fun with Dick and Jane" by doing a remake, why hasn't anyone thought of remaking this underrated comedic gem? Seriously, if you love light, frothy, yet still-topical comedies, give HOW TO BEAT a whirl!

5 out of 5 stars Underrated Gem.......2004-02-07

This is a fabulous, light comedy with a great all-star cast. This is something that deserved to be re-done on DVD. The plot concerns three women who live in Oregon. Jane Curtain is the wife of a wealthy architect. She comes home one day to fine he's run off with another woman, the bank accounts are cleaned out, and he's nowhere to be found. Bills are coming due. Jessica Lange is the wife of a wealthy veternarian played by Richard Benjamin. Her antique store is never profitable and now he has to sue her to please the IRS. She doesn't want to lose the store. Jill St. James is a divorcee with two kids and a deadbeat ex-husband. Her father then moves in with her when her mother takes up with another woman. She's pregnant with her boyfriend and they want to marry, but he has a no-future job, unless he can get the money to buy his boss' hardware store.

All three are friends and all three have something in common: they need money, and they need it now. After some failed schemes to get some, they decide to pull a heist at the local mall.

This is hysterical and tremendously funny. It's nothing deep or life changing, just a lot of intense, non-serious humor, great characters and great situations. Sure, there are some holes and a few scenes don't quite work, but this is something that ought to be in your permanent collection if you like comedies. It's a little dated, but has not lost any of its humor over the years. It's similar to "9 to 5" but I think funnier.

4 out of 5 stars A wry, neglected comedy.......2003-03-09

Although the details are dated, _How To Beat The High Co$t Of Living_ is freshly topical, with the economy in a bad way again. The three heroines' problems are, IMO, partly their own fault---but one has to root for their spunky, ingenious heist.

Jane Curtin improvising a striptease to cover her chums' getaway is a real highlight of the disc. She's game, sexy, and believable in her role---a really talented actress. And, for the record, the power is cut off only in _part_ of the mall, not the whole thing---I saw a review of the movie when it came out that didn't understand this point.

5 out of 5 stars Extraordinary!!.......2007-04-13

Few movies are better than the book that contains the history that inspires them. Old Gringo is an example. Carlos Fuentes wrote Gringo Viejo and in my opinion, this is his more successful work; but Fuentes is lazy and some chapters of his books are unconnected. Nevertheless, the movie has a perfect rhythm. Each personage has an extraordinary evolution during the whole film.

There cannot be the slightest doubt: Gregory Peck was the perfect actor for to be Ambrose Bierce.

3 out of 5 stars The Romanticization of Failure.......2007-01-16

Gregory Peck, Jane Fonda, Jimmy Smits, are politically left of center. Their involvement in the filming of leftist novelist Carlos Fuentes' "Old Gringo" almost certainly expresses their own infatuation with radical politics. How tragic. This film is nothing more than a romanticization of a failure. Do you want to know why Mexico is today a poverty stricken nation? Why so many of its citizens desperately desire to escape to the United States? Much of this has to do with the murderous activities of Pancho Villa and other so-called revolutionaries in the early part of the twentieth Century. They left the Mexicans unable to form a viable government. The rule of law was rejected in favor of revolutionary dictators claiming to represent the wishes of the common folk. Gregory Peck portrays Ambrose Bierce who naively considered Villa to be another George Washington. What can I add concerning the infamous Ms. Fonda? She has, in real life, even praised Communism. In this particular role as Harriet Winslow, Fonda is far too old. Another reviewer correctly pointed out that she looks every bit of her fifty one years---and the part calls for a woman who is much younger. Fonda could literally be Jimmy Smits' (Gen. Tomas Arroyo) mother. I was unable to take seriously their romance.

Ambrose Bierce is trying to make sense of his long life before passing onto the great unknown. The spinster Harriet Winslow is an existential mess. She is a true believer type easily seduced by the utopian fantasies of a better world---which usually end up causing substantially more misery in the real one. Bierce is trying to get the trigger happy Arroyo to kill him. Will he succeed? Should we care? The answer: we should not.

5 out of 5 stars Jane Fonda As A Spinster? You Gotta Be Kidding Me!.......2006-09-23

In this movie we have the Real Life Of Oft Married Jane Fonda looking every one of her 51 years and trying to convince the viewer that she is a "spinster" which is a euphenism for the girls in my High School Class . Then we have the Academically Jaded Gregory Peck who bids farewell to his life of books and heads to Mexico. At the time this film was released I saw an interview with Ms. Fonda who seemed to have a Mutual Admiration Society going on with Mr. Peck and she was in rapture at Jimmy Smits being the next BIG star which didn't happen. The peasant women of loose moral character in this movie discover the Joys Of A Corset through Ms. Fonda which they feel gives them lots of power in getting the Mexican Soldiers to be willing to fight, get blown up and die. They are kind of like the Mexican Version of Cheerleaders from what I can gather. I don't know where all the big bucks went in the making of this movie but the scenery is quite pretty which is why I give it 5 stars.

4 out of 5 stars Engrossing, Haunting and Beautiful .......2005-10-12

This movie was a surprise to me and a pleasant one and I would actually rate it four and a half stars. While I have never read the book on which it is based, I found it a haunting and memorable work of art in itself. The figure of Ambrose Bierce, as played by Gregory Peck, is quite fascinating but unless you are familiar with the writer (and even if you are)you may find the characterization rather hard to comprehend. However, Peck's performance is strong enough to carry you along despite this and his interaction with the other two characters--the frustrated spinster, played beautifully by Fonda, and the volatile and sexy rebel general played equally well by Smits--is totally engrossing. The love triangle, which seemed more of a father-daughter-lover relationship, could have been fleshed out more but was still pretty riveting. However, the real pull of the film is the beauty of the cinematography in battle scenes, love scenes and interiors, equally; the passion and brutality of the revolutionaries and at the same time their humanity, and the connection between the rather wildly different three central characters based on that humanity and despite the brutality, all during an epic era in the history of Mexico. I have watched this film several times now and each time I find new reasons to admire it, not the least of which is that it is just a wonderful story about characters who are electric, vibrant and mesmerizing in their search for meaning in their lives. It is fast becoming one of my all-time favorites.

3 out of 5 stars Unlikely Romantic Triangle Set in Pancho Villa's Mexico.......2004-11-26

Argentinean director Luis Puenzo seems like a smart choice to helm this epic drama since his specialty seems to be offering probing character studies in the face of larger sociopolitical issues. But this 1989 movie falls short of expectations, especially if you've read Carlos Fuentes' 1985 novel upon which this movie is based. All the elements for success seem present - a fascinating historical setting (the Mexican Revolution); rather flamboyant characters (both fictitious and fictionalized); explosive battle scenes; dramatic executions; and a romantic triangle with gauzy love scenes. Indeed, the problem is that the elements don't quite add up to a cohesive whole that induces any heartfelt passion. Set in 1913, the story focuses on an American spinster named Harriet Winslow, who has been hired to be a governess for a wealthy Mexican family on their grand hacienda. The beginning of the story shows great promise as the period detail is vivid, and the set-up of the characters promises some intriguing interactions. However, when the three primary characters come together on the hacienda, the plot seems to narrow in scope, and the story's initial gallop slows to a cant until the conclusion.

I was afraid that at 51, Jane Fonda would be at least a decade too old to play Harriet, but she actually looks right most of the time, slightly worn but constantly engaged with the swirl of activities around her. However, with a stellar career spanning three decades, she just doesn't surprise with this performance (unlike, say, her alcoholic has-been actress in 1986's "The Morning After"), and after one more film, she retired from the big screen for the next fifteen years. Granted she is playing an uptight woman on the verge of a political and sexual awakening, she just comes across as too mannered and frankly too wizened to draw the carnal attentions of two completely different men. On the other hand, it's a joy to see the relish with which Gregory Peck plays Ambrose Bierce, the real American journalist who disappeared into Mexico at this time. His charisma intact, he makes palatable his romantic overtures to Harriet and brings a realistic blend of gusto and frailty to his constant philosophizing and his slow march toward death. As the virulent General Arroyo, one of Pancho Villa's men, Jimmy Smits has to maintain a delicate balancing act between quick-tempered, violent revolutionary and smitten romantic hero. He succeeds up to a point, especially in expressing his obsession with past injustices through firepower, but there is little chemistry between him and Fonda, which leaves the ending scenes oddly hollow. The one exception is the firing squad scene, which is sufficiently shocking. The film is not a complete misfire, but given its interesting mix of historical fact and fiction, I wish it was much more than it is, even though in Peck's case, it is.

The mission mounts into Mafioso mayhem, in this screwball sequel to the 2000 hit comedy The Whole Nine Yards.

Anyway, I can only recommend this to someone who likes the cast but not necessarily the story, otherwise, this movie gets a 5 out of 10 because they did try...to some degree.

the picture was bad and faded in and out hard to watch, it looks like it could be a very good movie but i had to turn it off.

3 out of 5 stars A Shark for All Seasons.......2007-05-18

I see by the other reviews that the vicious Internet movie critics are at it again. The Internet can be a great forum for people to air their views, unfortunately it has also become a place where people lash out with hateful barbs at a product that hasn't met their expectations for whatever reason.

First of all, I would love to know the ages of the reviewers who attacked the quality of this movie. I realize that many people aren't aware or have forgotten that movies weren't always digitally remastered with Dolby Digital Surround Sound with a picture quality that was clean as a whistle. Let me take you back to a time long ago, in a galaxy far far away. Having grown up in the 1970s, I watched many of these made for TV movies when they originally aired on the old [...] tube (no HDTV, plasma, or flat screen, no surround sound). Let me tell you, the prints that the TV stations used were sometimes beat to crap. The color would be faded, there would be all sorts of lines, hairs, and who knows what else on that print. There would also be times when the print would break and the station would put on the always dreaded "we are experiencing technical difficulties, please stand by" message on the screen. Of course, this would always happen at the climax of a film and by the time the movie came on again, the best part was already over and done with. Of course, it was annoying back then, but now I look back to those times with fond memories.

What is the point of this trip down memory lane you ask? Let's face it, Shark Kill is not the most glorious moment in film history. It's a cheesy 1970s made for TV movie that was rushed out to capitalize on the success of Jaws. It did not have great acting, cinematography, directing, or anything else for that matter. The prints used to show on the TV stations were low quality. Why anyone would think that a major studio would spend a ton of money remastering this movie to give it a super deluxe release with high tech picture quality and sound, is beyond me. I doubt that a decent print even exists of this film. No one else but a small company with a love for old cheesy movies would even bother putting out a movie like this one. If you really want this movie to get a high end release, call up Sony, Paramount, or Warner and see what they say. Just be ready to hear their laughter.

Now if this film is so bad, why even bother buying it you ask? Simple, for the cheesy 1970s appeal. It has the dreadful clothing and hairstyles, the bad acting, ugly furniture, and the "scary" monster. The picture quality isn't bad, it has the same look as the prints that were shown back in the 70s. If you are looking to see a super high tech masterpiece with superior sound, you are better off buying some George Lucas film that has been tweaked 40 billion times over. But if you want some cheesy fun, then Shark Kill is the film for you. So get out the fondue, the bear rug, Schlitz beer, and the crochet owl and put on the film!

1 out of 5 stars Terrible Picture .......2007-04-24

I have always wanted to see this movie. But I was really mad at the qulity of the the picture. It was the worst picture ever release to dvd. I had to get a refund because it was unwatchable. I agreed with the other review. Wild Eye Releasing should fix this problem because people who want to see rare tv movies should have the chance.

1 out of 5 stars OH MY GOD!!!.......2007-04-17

HORRIBLE, HORRIBLE, HORRIBLE TRANSFER. STILL CANNOT EVEN BRING MYSELF TO VIEW THE FILM AFTER WITNESSING THE FIRST FEW MINUTES. I COULD NOT BELEIVE THE QUALITY....I ACTUALLY THOUGHT IT WAS A JOKE UNTIL I FLIPPED THOUGH ALL THE TRACKS. I HAVE NEVER SEEN A WORSE TRANSFER. I AM A STICKLER FOR WIDESCREEN/DECENT TRANSFERS. I AM EVEN WILLING TO VIEW VHS TRANSFERS ON DVD IF THE TITLE IS NOT AVAILABLE ANY OTHER WAY. I REALIZE THAT IT IS A RARE TV MOVIE, I CAN UNDERSTAND THAT IT IS FULL SCREEN, BUT THE QUALITY OF THIS TRANSFER IS ABSURD. IT LOOKS LIKE IT WAS RECORDED OFF AN ILLGAL CABLE BOX (NO ACTUAL ACCUSATION INTENDED, BUT SERIOUSLY, COME ON!!!! BARELY WATCHABLE)I WAS REALLY LOOKING FORWARD TO THIS COMPANY (WILD EYE) AS THEY WERE ATTEMPTING TO BRING RARE TV HORROR FILMS TO DVD, BUT AFTER THIS ATROCITY, I DON'T THINK I CAN BRING MYSELF TO BUY ANOTHER (I ALSO BOUGHT MANEATERS ARE LOOSE BY THE SAME COMPANY, BUT HAVE NOT YET HAD THE CHANCE TO CHECK OUT THE QUALITY...AFTER FLIPPING THOUGH THE TRACKS ON THIS ONE I AM SCARED TO EVEN TRY). I CANNOT JUDGE THE FILM ITSELF AS I HAVE NOT YET SEEN IT. MAYBE ONE DAY I WILL BE DRUNK AND BORED ENOUGH TO VIEW IT AND BE ABLE TO JUDGE THE FILM ON ITS OWN MERITS, BUT UP UNTIL NOW, I HAVE TO LEAVE THIS MARK. SORRY WILD EYE, BUT YOU DESERVE THIS....HAVE I MADE MYSELF CLEAR?
