A bit slow in the beginning, but the story gets better in the end. Truly amazing movie to watch.

5 out of 5 stars Best movie in 2000.......2006-07-25

This movie really surprised me. It was shown late night on TV and I didn't expect much. Oh but was I wrong, very very wrong. It's brilliant. The actors & dialogue is so real, you'll think you are watching part of your own life. I will definitely buy every movie this director had a hand in. Whatever you do, don't miss it - it must be part to of every human being's education! It's the best movie I've seen in years.

5 out of 5 stars A MASTERPIECE - 2000's answer to Brokeback Mountain.......2006-07-25

I saw STRAIGHTMAN yesterday evening (July 22, 2006), on the Canadian TV channel OUT! The credits at the start are over-kill. The beginning is very slow but the film gets much better eventually. The movie actually only gets going with a startling but very short scene on the stairs, about 33 minutes into the script. It's a disappointment this scene is ended abruptly. Why is director Ben Berkowitz so scared to show some male nudity, especially when he has no problem with female nudity? Maybe because this is the first film he has directed.

It's also a pity that the leading character played by Ben Redgrave, has such an old fashioned moustache this resulted in 90% of the gay audience, turning the movie off after the first few minutes! Ben Redgrave is actually an immensely attractive man and nothing short of a real hunk -but the moustache does him absolute no justice. I can only hope its part of Redgrave's superb strategies to challenge stereotypes to the bone.

STRAIGHTMAN was filmed on a tiny budget (around $50 000!) using direct sound. On the plus side, we get a very realistic soundscape; as a result, however, the dialogue is sometimes hard to make out.

If you can see past these problems, STRAIGHTMAN offers brilliant dialogue, outstanding acting, (the scene in the bath tub is breathtaking and really deserves an Oscar), excellent camera work. Simply put, it's a MASTERPIECE and 2000's answer to Brokeback Mountain.

Current Hollywood acting is so plasticized that I can't believe in the people on the screen. This film is not like that. Because the acting here is credible, the characters are authentic, and because they're so very real, I cried when the film ended and they left my life...

5 out of 5 stars i liked it a lot.......2006-05-08

This movie is not for all but I know it is an important Chicago story that needed to be told. Rent or buy it and decide for yourself. I am a tough audience and I truly liked it.

1 out of 5 stars Over analitical garbage.......2005-05-15

This film is one I bought based on the good reviews.....take note of the bad instead....totally boring and self indulgent....like watching two pseudo-intellectual beer swilling men talk about their feelings on Jerry Springer.... the intent of the film was good but it got lost in a morass of words and lack of direction....bad script, bad dialogue, bad sound, bad film....Just goes to show that a gay man can be just as dirty, slovenly, foulmouthed and aimless as the next person.
