British horror/comedy Shaun of the Dead is a scream in all senses of the word. Brain-hungry zombies shamble through the streets of London, but all unambitious electronics salesman Shaun (Simon Pegg) cares about is his girlfriend Liz (Kate Ashfield), who just dumped him. With the help of his slacker roommate Ed (Nick Frost), Shaun fights his way across town to rescue Liz, but the petty concerns of life keep getting in the way: When they're trying to use vinyl records to decapitate a pair of zombies, Shaun and Ed bicker about which bands deserve preservation--New Order they keep, but Sade becomes a lethal frisbee. Many zombie movies are comedies by accident, but Shaun of the Dead is deliberately and brilliantly funny, while still delivering a few delicious jolts of fear. Also featuring the stealthy comic presence of Bill Nighy (Love Actually) and some familar faces from The Office. --Bret Fetzer

1 out of 5 stars What an incredible let down........2007-09-16

Wow! I was excited to see this movie based on the trailers I had seen, what an incredible let down. Not so much a comedy, I kept waiting to laugh and never did. Live and learn. It's just a movie but I wouldn't waste my money on this stinker.

5 out of 5 stars After you stop laughing--watch it a second time.......2007-09-11

First go around, I had to clean my glasses because they were fogged with tears from laughing so hard. "Shaun" is truly one of the most bizarrely funny cult films I have ever seen.

Since I had some trouble with my Mac scanning the DVD, I watched for a second time. What jumped out at me was Shaun's manager's pep-talk about 'teams' and what a study of human nature Shaun and his group would make. We saw thinking outside of the box, bravery in the least expected places, selflessness, and how utterly stupid the panicked group Critic could be.

Seriously, if the corporate trainers ever get tired of making their teams climb rock walls and build paper gizmos that nobody will ever use, they ought to have employees watch this film--twice--so they can see human nature in action.

Wouldn't dealing with zombies be a great way to explain difficult tech support calls? How many uses can you find for this scenario?

"Shaun" is a great film on both the funny and the serious levels. And it is one to be watched more than once. I seriously regret not seeing it in the theatre.

5 out of 5 stars Awesome, funny film.......2007-09-01

I have watched this film several times and now and just love the humour. It is a horror film though so not for the faint hearted
Lets all go to the 'Winchester'....:-)

2 out of 5 stars surely not hilarious..........2007-08-23

it could have been much more better. the scénario is very poor and acting is pretty bad.About laughing....search where and when..
as poor as Hot fuzz
rent it at the best.

1 out of 5 stars WASTE OF TIME........2007-08-18

I love British humor but this sucked. I cannot understand why people loved it so much...Let's face it, if these actors had American accents it would be a complete flop...Also, I believe a lot of people are saying they like it to fit in.

5 out of 5 stars Great!.......2007-09-15

I loved Shaun of the Dead when I saw it on DVD. When I got a HD-DVD player, I found out this movie was on HD-DVD and I had to have it! It was better watching it this time around than when I first remember. If you don't own the movie already, you need to get it, if you do own it, watch it again or buy the HD-DVD version if you want to support the format and/or Simon, Nick, and Bill.

5 out of 5 stars Zombie Plagues are Tons of Fun!.......2007-08-26

I loved this movie: a little bit of gore, a little bit of heartbreak...they do their best to survive.

"Shaun of the Dead" brings good humour to this "romantic comedy with zombies" which comes to HD DVD with a fantastic HD picture and excellent DD+ 5.1 audio.

The local zombies are great...I liked the female Winchester regular, she made a nice creepy zombie, as did the [chubby] black one, and Mary grows on you even more through the second viewing...they all did a really great job! They do well to give several zombies more familiarity through character development.

There are plenty of extras on this HD DVD as well including deleted scenes, commentary, a gallery...it even follows up on a couple of happenings not shown in the film.

This is an extremely fun movie, and I highly recommend it.

5 out of 5 stars Absolutely fantastic.......2007-08-21

Loved this movie. Saw Hot Fuzz first, which was also great. This movie is a great comedy. Other reviews go through the plot, so I won't bother. Great movie in the tradition of British comedies with smart, sharp writing and great acting.

5 out of 5 stars Worthy of the price a funny movie.......2007-08-13

One of my favorite movies is Shaun of the Dead. That being said I expected more of the same with this movie. After watching the movie it wasn't the same. The physical comedy I enjoyed so much is not evident early on. The comedy and banter is dry early on. The action is rather lacking for the first hour. Then when the movie heats up it really becomes a lot of fun.

This movie is different and for those expecting an American type action movie you better turn away. Hot Fuzz features a lot and I mean a lot of dry English humor. It's good but don't expect any real laugh til your sides hurt moments. Hot Fuzz is rather enjoyable if you approach it with an open mind. The same main characters for Shaun of the Dead are here and the on screen chemistry is good. This movie is almost unusual to be stranger than Shaun of the Dead.

In the end I really liked this movie. The acting is very good and action scenes are funny and intense. The sound quality on my home theatre was very good and that helped add to the movie. For any fan of Shaun of the Dead this is definately a must watch. The picture and sound quality are excellent for this HD version. The price is great. At only $20 this is a must have for any HD collection.

4 out of 5 stars Not your typical zombie movie (HD DVD review).......2007-08-06

If you are looking for your typical zombie movie ie. 28 days/weeks later, land of the dead, dawn of the dead this is not it. If you do not enjoy british humor go somewhere else. However if you are okay with the above stated then this movie is for you. very funny film, well made.
HD DVD version is excellent very good sound and video.

The flaws are easily forgiven in this beautiful version of Louisa May Alcott's novel. A stirring look at life in New England during the Civil War, Little Women is a triumph for all involved. We follow one family as they split into the world, ending up with the most independent, the outspoken Jo (Winona Ryder). This time around, the dramatics and conclusions fall into place a little too well, instead of finding life's little accidents along the way. Everyone now looks a bit too cute and oh, so nice. As the matron, Marmee, Susan Sarandon kicks the film into a modern tone, creating a movie alive with a great feminine sprit. Kirsten Dunst (Interview with the Vampire) has another showy role. The young ensemble cast cannot be faulted, with Ryder beginning the movie in a role akin to light comedy and crescendoing to a triumphant end worthy of an Oscar. --Doug Thomas

This movie is one classic movie. It is good to watch it with family, friends.. ;)

5 out of 5 stars Watching This Yields 'Rich' Results - A Wonderful Re-Make.......2007-09-09

"Rich" is the word I would best use to describe this movie. It's rich in cinematography with gorgeous scenery and interiors; rich in characters with all good-hearted men and women of character; rich in love for each whether its for family or for suitors and rich in storytelling.

Yes, it's definitely more of a woman's movie than a man's, and not the sort of thing I would normally enjoy, but this movie was so well-done that I cannot say anything negative about it. In the modern-era of film-making (late '60s to today), it is always a pleasure to see a totally clean and nice movie.

The cast is excellent. It's nice to see Winona Ryder and Susan Sarandon play "wholesome" roles, something they don't always do, but they do it well here. Ryder is the star of this story although everyone gets decent screen time.

If this film appears slow in the first 20-30 minutes, hang in there because it gets better and better as it goes along. This is just a beautiful film with fantastic visuals and memorable story that should bring a tear or two to your eyes by the end. Great storytelling usually wins out, and that's the case with this movie.

5 out of 5 stars a wonderful version of an American classic............2007-08-30

I remember first hearing Louisa May Alcott's LITTLE WOMEN read by Jacqueline Bissett on record, and immediately fell in love with it. Afterwards, I immediately polished off the novel, and saw the subsequent film adaptations. This 1994 production, directed by Gillian Armstrong (MY BRILLIANT CAREER), is a beautifully acted, lusciously filmed and engaging film triumph. We watch the trials and triumphs of the March family, through the eyes of the four March sisters. Meg (Trini Alvarado), Jo (Winonah Ryder), Beth (Claire Danes) and Amy (Kirsten Dunst) live with their mother in a little town in Pennsylvania and are awaiting the return of their father's return from war, where is he is serving as a chaplain in the Union Army. All four girls have very distinctive personalities that vary greatly from one another, and their mother (Susan Sarandon) is nothing short of their rock, in the face of many, many hardships the family must face together.

For all of you Louisa May Alcott fans, I would say that this film stayed very true to the novel and the actresses truly embody the beautiful characters from the story. Winonah Ryder earned a well-deserved Academy Award for her portrayal of Jo March, the headstrong tomboy with a hot temper and a passion for writing. This character was actually based on Louisa May Alcott, during her formative years. What's more, the plot is based largely on vignettes from Alcott's life as a young girl, growing up in Germantown, Pennsylvania. I reccomend that you watch this film and read the book, not necessarily in that order. This beautiful piece will make you laugh, cry and is perfect for the whole family.

3 out of 5 stars A Spoilery Rant! .......2007-08-30

Gillian Anderson's LITTLE WOMEN attempts not so much to capture the essense of Louisa May Alcott's original story as to use it as a springboard. It might have been better if she had transferred the story to a different time, or otherwise re-framed it so as to give herself more liberty to change things around. I myself would not have minded a version of LITTLE WOMEN where Laurie and Jo DO run away, Beth sneakily brings in much needed cash as dance hall pianist, and Professor Bhaer finally learns to mind his own business. But instead, screenwriter Robin Swicord drains the drama and momentum from the original by pointless alteration, but is still required to hit major plot points, and so cannot create anything new and satisfactory.

What made Alcott's LITTLE WOMEN, despite the moralizing, something children have wanted to read for one and a half centures now was its vivid portrait of passionate adolescence: Jo's famous temper, Laurie's rebelliousness, Amy's spite, Meg's longings - even what lurked beneath Beth's shyness. Anderson jettisons this anger and passion for a genteel and straight-laced Art-House flick about ladylike little feminists. Alcott famously disparaged her books for children as "moral pap for the young", but LITTLE WOMEN had honesty and substance. Anderson ignores the substance in favor of "moral pap" - albeit politically correct and feminist pap - washed down with tony sentimentality. The only notes of truth are struck by the performances.

The girls are just not the same girls, with mixed results. Kirsten Dunst - fresh from INTERVIEW WITH A VAMPIRE - is a superb child-Amy, but is written as a sly vixen with designs on Laurie, which ruins the honest connection between them that was so important later. Adult Samantha Mathis plays Amy as a dense zombie. Trini Alvarado brings tremendous grace and womanliness to Meg, which is really nice actually, except that Meg is supposed to be an unsure adolescent. Winona Ryder's Jo is interestingly different, which is to say she isn't a rebellious tomboy with a wild temper and a burning literary passion, but a thoughtful-if-pouty wannabe Liberal Arts Major. Beth is supposed to be a frail girl struggling mightily with her timidity: Claire Daines gives us a sturdy lass placidly devoid of inner conflict. Thus we must lurch through the plot of LITTLE WOMEN, without getting the Little Women themselves as compensation.

Christian Bale, as boy-next-door Laurie, does a good job of suggesting caged wildness, and makes the most of the few poignant lines which are all that is left of Laurie's tempestuous relationship with his grandfather. But he is just a little too old, too smug, and too smarmy. Alcott's lonely, emotionally-deprived teenager is barely hinted at. Rather, he has become a representative of "Men", which you know is just not good. In the book, Laurie's reaction to seeing Meg dolled up like a sexpot was sudden bashfulness and defensive rudeness. Here he is a suave sexist oaf who sees Meg's new finery as the opportunity for a spot of sexual harassment. Ew! Why? The point of Laurie and Jo's dance, in the book, was to convey the pleasure of meeting a soulmate one could show one's real self to without worrying about being "presentable" or "proper". Here, their dance is rendered somewhat awkward by the fact that Jo only knows how to lead. This alters the whole meaning of the scene, implying Anderson sees it as a power struggle rather than a moment of connection. And it's so dismally cliché. "Oh, they are both too strong-willed so . . .." You know something? Being weak-willed and knowing how to dance backwards have NOTHING WHATSOEVER to do with one another.

In the directors's commentary, Anderson describes Alcott's Marmee as the "perfect" mother. She was not! Anderson obviously doesn't think the March parents were perfect either, as her version replaced Marmee with Susan B. Anthony, and shuts Father up completely. But instead of admitting it and portraying Marmee as a flawed human being, she simply replaces her own PC notion of perfection for that supposedly offered by Alcott. Susan Sarandon does as amazing a job as one could possibly wish, considering that she's being asked to play a marble statue instead of a woman. Some have suggested that Saradon's portrayal would have been more convincing in another era, but I disagree. Her Marmee says nothing feminists didn't say at the time - in essays and speeches. Alcott's trashy adventure-potboiler A LONG FATAL LOVE CHASE has quite a few feminist speeches, and as ALFLC is scarcely attempting naturalistic realism, they fit in just fine. No, it is Marmee's cardboard-cutout supermom-hood which rings false - in any era.

There is inherent feminism to be found in Alcott's work, to those interested in Alcott's work. But those people do not include Anderson and Swicord. Scene after scene is rewritten to ignore and replace the actual story rather than intepret or illuminate it. John Brooke takes Meg to the theatre, only to spout stock rubbish about how sinful, immodest and unladylike actresses are. Writer Jo faces sexist discrimination from New York publishers, and discusses female sufferage with Herr Professor. Meg and Sally Moffat argue over child silk laborers. The doctor throws in a line about bleeding, and throws in the towel on a patient who is promptly saved by Super-Marmee. Amy's doting schoolmaster who very reluctantly struck her for disobedience is now The Sexist Educational Establishment, and is given that line comparing female students to female cats which is scarcely what a poor man who earned his living educating young ladies would say. Thus generic Victorian clichés gleaned from speed-reading a few history books replace the situations created by a woman who was actually THERE, and incidents borrowed from Alcott's life are thrown in without context or point. I'm surprised nobody found a runaway slave in the oven. Or did I blink?

The script is so ham-handed that on the occasion we do get something of Alcott's, it no longer makes sense. Take the skating accident. In the book, Jo is so furious with Amy that she refuses to speak to her, even to warn her of thin ice. Then she freezes in shock when Amy falls through, leaving the rescue to Laurie. The line "How could I be so horrible? Thank God for Laurie!" would therefore make perfect sense. In the FILM, Jo knows nothing about rotten ice, is blameless for Amy's accident, and is as quick to the rescue as Laurie. But Swicord includes the now-senseless line anyway. This book chapter ended with Jo's realization that "perfect" Marmee had as fiery a temper as Jo herself. This liberated Jo from her self-loathing and despair, permited her to forgive both herself and Amy, and the chapter ended on a kiss. The subtextual message is that we manage our darker feelings better when we acknowledge them, that we strangle our ability for love when we don't acknowledge our anger, and that there is no such thing as the perfect woman or mother who lacks the full range of human feelings. That is more feminist and timeless than whining about corsets, and even has something to do with the plot and characters. So of course it's not included.

Another chapter that would have rewarded feminist interest was when unfashionable Meg allows herself to get nicely dolled up at Moffat's, only to find she has ruined herself in the eyes of conservative acquaintances. But in the film, Meg looks EXACTLY like all the other girls present, and never hears any censure for crossing an invisible line of modesty. She merely seems dressed for the occasion. Yet she allows herself to be thoroughly shamed by Laurie, and (in an even creepier scene) cries repentantly while taking off her makeup. What could easily have been a commentary on the eternal feminine double-bind instead comes across as a Puritanical slam against femininity itself. Marmee's advice on modesty, in the BOOK, addressed Meg's need to protect her self-respect and the integrity of her relationships with men in the face of the "marriage market" mentality, but she specifically defended Meg's desire for prettiness and admiration as right and harmless. Anderson's message amounts to "Men are Beasts, girls! So COVER UP!" which doesn't seem terribly progressive somehow. Still, the scene where Meg, Jo, and Marmee discuss the incident is among those where the actresses transcend their material.

This movie is not BAD, mind. It is at it's best showing the girl's at play, doing the Pickwick Club, or putting on amateur theatricals written by Jo. But some scenes are too stupid for words. Bale and Mathis deserve awards for professionalism for enacting the lamest screen courtship ever allowed to succeed. I don't expect Mr. March to get any LINES, but an award winning director should make the actor look line a man in his own home, rather than an Alzheimer's patient who wandered onto the set. A character in England reads a letter from America, throws it aside UNFINISHED when he gets to the dramatic part, and rushes out the door to catch a boat to Vienna. Meg doesn't tell her own sister she's pregnant in private letter because "One doesn't speak of such things". Amy doesn't burn Jo's novel in the heat of anger, then grow fearful and repentant by the time Jo comes home. She burns the novel AND acts fearful and repentant all in the same 60 second period. Then there is the skating scene, wherein the "rotten ice" is clearly ROCK SOLID as though the hole were sawed out by a cartoon character, and which bears the weight of two fully grown rescuers who suicidally throw themselves down side-by-side next to the edge. They then wave a oar around just because there was an oar in the book, and not because they are using it to any purpose. If Anderson ever directs an action film, I'm not seeing it.

Last but not least, "strong-minded" Jo doesn't come up with the idea for Plumfield on her own. She does it because Super-Marmee TOLD her to. We are dealing with the sort of twisted minds who read LITTLE WOMEN and thought: "Gee, that wasn't bad, but Marmee should have put HER oar in a bit more often."

5 out of 5 stars good stuff.......2007-08-07

Great story for the whole family. Christian Bale is one of my favorites. As much as I detest her political views, Susan Sarandon is an undeniably great actress.

The director/producer team that created Trainspotting turn their dynamic cinematic imaginations to the classic science fiction scenario of the last people on Earth. Jim (Cillian Murphy) wakes up from a coma to find London deserted--until he runs into a mob of crazed plague victims. He gradually finds other still-human survivors (including Naomie Harris), with whom he heads off across the abandoned countryside to find the source of a radio broadcast that promises salvation. 28 Days Later is basically an updated version of The Omega Man and other post-apocalyptic visions; but while the movie may lack originality, it makes up for it in vivid details and creepy paranoid atmosphere. 28 Days Later's portrait of how people behave in extreme circumstances--written by novelist Alex Garland (The Beach)--will haunt you afterward. Also featuring Brendan Gleeson (The General, Gangs of New York) and Christopher Eccleston (Shallow Grave, The Others). --Bret Fetzer

Description

Hailed as the most frightening film since The Exorcist, acclaimed Director Danny Boyle's visionary take on zombie horror "isn't just scary…it's absolutely terrifying" (Access Hollywood).

An infirmary patient awakens from a coma to an empty room…in a vacant hospital…in a deserted city. A powerful virus, which locks victims into a permanent state of murderous rage, has transformed the world around him into a seemingly desolate wasteland. Now a handful of survivors must fight to stay alive, unaware that the worst is yet to come…

3 out of 5 stars 28 "zombies" later.......2007-09-07

Ok, first and foremost..."28 days later" is not a zombie movie, no matter how it was marketed, or reviewed or talked about. The bad element of 28 days are people infected with a viral toxin (rage), that causes them to succumb to extreme violent acts. They are not dead, or undead. The do not devour their victims. They are not rotting...etc.

While 28 days shares familiar territory with Romero's classic Living Dead movies and an introduction to the lead character ripped from Day of the Triffids, the zombie genre ends there.

What "28 days later" is, however, is a very good low budget suspense flick with a great opener, a good middle section and an ok end section, which despite being entertaining kind of loses its way. It starts of well, with the actions that release "rage" virus and its scenes of a deserted London with unknown unseen danger and drips with atmosphere. People from Britain (or anyone whose spent some time in the city) could easily imagine themselves in Jim's dilemma, played admirably by Cork's Cillian Murphy.

Going into too much detail will spoil the suspense for those who haven't seen the film, but needless to say Jim eventually meets and runs away from the "infected", right into other survivors (including another Irishman Brendan Gleeson) who have been managing to hide out and stay "normal" in the face of overwhelming odds. Together this group decide to hook up with a military outfit that has set up the "answer to infection" in Manchester.

"28 Days Later" has enough to hold the viewer for its duration, in fact it rewards several viewings (I seen it three times now). But the budget constraints do show at times and the story does seem to run a little out of steam. It's very apparent that director Danny Boyle wasn't sure how to end the film and one is left a little let down at the films conclusion. This feeling may disappear however, now that "28 weeks later" is out and the second installment of the drama lets us into other areas of life in infected Britain, although I have yet to see that particular episode.

All in all, "28 Days Later" is an effective and entertaining film, with some fine scenes...but it ain't "Day of the Dead", but then again, nothing is.

3 out of 5 stars Stop calling it a zombie movie.......2007-09-06

OK, 28 days later is an OK virus movie. A monkey that's been experimented on and infected with the "Rage" virus bites an activist who in turn is infected and attacks her mates. Explodes and you have a post-apocalyptic story with some great shots of abandoned streets and markets and some good chase scenes taboot. Add some great film treatments and good camera work and it's an edgy flick with some nice emotional touches.

BUT! It completely fails to be a Zombie movie.

Aside from breaking all conventions in Zombie movies, there aren't any walking dead. Between 28 days later and 28 weeks later, we find out that the infected, although usually killed through conventional zombie means (remove the head or destroy the brain) can also drown, bleed to death, asphyxiate, die from being gassed, starve, and be generally mauled. All their primary bodily functions are still going and that's what keeps them alive. Zombies (as originally portrayed in Night of the Living Dead) die and then start causing trouble.

If you don't look at it as a Zombie movie, it's an OK flick. If you're expecting a Zombie movie (and you know what a Zombie movie IS), you'll be disappointed.

5 out of 5 stars ONE OF THE GREAT ZOMBIE MOVIES!!.......2007-09-01

a city ravished by disease, millions of zombies, only a few survivors, and you turn with just one drop of blood...crazy. loved this movie, i thought it was very well done. all the chaos, a world of the dead, where's saftey, how do you get out? i love zombies, i think they're the freakiest. they're people and they're dead, and all they want is to eat people. pretty damn scary. the whole movie was very good, i really liked it. i didn't get scared, but the film in general was wicked good. two thumbs up no doubt.

5 out of 5 stars Charming, Poignant, and Inspiring.......2007-08-03

Having long been a fan of Sandra Bullock's, I expected 28 Days Later to be another one of her light-hearted, action-packed comedies (or are they comedy-packed action flicks?). I was in for a real surprise, however, as we are taken through the story of Gwen Cummings, played by Bullock, who is sent to a drug and alcohol rehabilitation center. At first she resists getting involved in the program, and refuses to admit that she has a problem, but as she gets to know her fellow patients and as she gets the chance to look deeper inside herself, she learns to accept that she does in fact have a problem, and only then is she able to have true hope for the future. She then wakes up 28 days later in the abandoned hospital only to learn that the world has changed drastically while she was in her unconscious stupor, and most people have been infected by a horrible and extremely contagious virus that turns even the kindest person into a hate-filled zombie filled with uninhibited violence. And she must face the question: who is the real enemy here? The blood-vomiting zombie-like infected who would love nothing more than to bite her throat out...or is the real enemy HERSELF?

4 out of 5 stars Entertaining movie.......2007-08-02

Although the plot is not original this was a well made film. Good acting, good script, good directing and excellent camera work. Well worth seeing.

The question facing any viewer of the Japanese CG feature Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children is: do you have to know the games on which it's based in order to understand the film? And the answer is: it certainly helps. But even complete novices (i.e., most parents) in the Final Fantasy world will find some entertainment in its wealth of fantasy-based action, and the animation never fails to astonish. Picking up two years after an epic battle between the forces of good (represented by brooding soldier Cloud) and evil (Cloud's former general, Sephiroth), FFVII opens in the devastated city of Midgard, whose youthful occupants suffer from a ghastly disease known as Geostigma. A trio of brothers arrives with what appears to be a cure for the plague, but their gesture conceals a more sinister purpose: to revive Sephiroth and bring about the end of the world. Cloud and his companions must once again rise to the occasion to stop the siblings and the revived Sephiroth from unleashing total destruction. Complex and self-referential to the point of occasional incomprehension, Final Fantasy VII will definitely be most appreciated by fans of the game series, but if others can look past the numbing dialogue and frenetic action (which is a bit too intense for very young children), the film offers a carefree and action-packed viewing experience. The two-disc set contains the original Japanese language version of the film as well as an English-dubbed edition (Rachel Leigh Cook and Christy Carlson Romano, among others, provide the vocal talent) and a version edited for the Venice Film Festival. A 30-minute featurette that recaps the Final Fantasy story up to VII, as well as a making-of documentary, deleted scenes, and promotions for future Final Fantasy VII games and products round out the extras. --Paul Gaita

Based on Catherine Marshall's beloved novel Christy, this PAX Television adaptation features Lauren Lee Smith as the 19-year-old schoolteacher who flounders and perseveres in an isolated mountain community in the early 1900s. Set against the breathtaking backdrop of the Great Smokey Mountains, this 89-minute film begins with an elderly Christy returning to the long-abandoned mission where she once taught. Her memories center around a time when change was coming to Cutter Gap--some for the better, some not, and all of it resisted by the locals. The reverend is building a new road, poachers are afoot, and a fetching aviator makes an emergency landing outside of town. Meanwhile, Christy is pushing a young student to study for medical school against the wishes of his father. Mission funds are cut, townsfolk revolt against her, and she suffers the loss of support from her mentor and mission director (Diane Ladd), and Christy must do some soul-searching. Excellent family viewing for ages 6 and up, the film does have some gunplay, a violent injury, and talk of lynching--all revolving around the poaching subplot. --Kimberly Heinrichs

    Book Description

Set in early twentieth century Tennessee, this touching family film tells the story of a schoolteacher, Christy Huddleston, who learns lessons in loyalty, faith, and friendship when she attempts to force a small community into progressing with the outside world.

Considered an outsider by the residents of Cutter Gap, Christy is beloved as a teacher but begins to stir up conflict with her pleas for progress and stories of an outside world of skyscrapers and modern conveniences. When a free-spirited woman aviator crash lands in Cutter Gap, the attention is taken off Christy . . . until a series of robberies occur. Believing the thieves would never have come if it were not for the new road that Christy had built, the town unites against her. Faced with this series of setbacks, Christy contemplates returning home to North Carolina, but is persuaded to stay when she realizes she has much more to learn about her new friends . . . and herself!

    1 out of 5 stars Disapointing .......2007-08-29

This series is a sorry replacement for the original. Aside from Stewart Finlay-McClelan, the acting is terrible! I would only reccomend watching the last episode for closure from the original, but that's it.

1 out of 5 stars This is not Christy.......2007-08-19

This movie just was not Christy if you want to see Christy watch the original series starring Kellie Martin now that's how it should be played. There was so much about this that I didn't like that I won't even waste time saying it all lol. I don't usually give bad reviews but this one deserves it and I would hate for someone to waste their time and money on this one. Just a bad rendition of the story imo and I agree with a lot of the other reviewers it just doesn't work at all.

1 out of 5 stars Christy - Return to Cutter Gap.......2007-06-11

As I had watched the original series, the differences were very apparent in the change of actors, location and characters and even the theme of the story. It would have been nicer to have had the ending of the original series as the flow wasn't good. I was very disappointed with their new take on the original series.

    2 out of 5 stars DIsappionting.......2007-05-24

I was rather disappionted with this addition to the Christy series. Not only were hardly any of the original actors in the movie, but the story went over ground already covered in the original series. I found it redundent and annoying. The girl who played Christy tried her best but I don't know how you can top the original. Plus in the end it does not let on to who (the doc or the minister) Christy ends up with. Read the book for the full story, it is definetly worth it!

When you add up all the best things about The Island, you might just conclude that there's hope yet for Hollywood's most critically reviled hit-maker, Michael Bay. Recruited by Steven Spielberg to direct this lavish and often breathtaking sci-fi action thriller, Bay rises to the occasion with an ambitious production that is, by his standards (and compared to Bay's earlier hits like The Rock and Armageddon), surprisingly intelligent as it explores the repercussions of cloning in a sealed-off society where humans are cultivated for spare parts, surrogate parenthood, and full-body replacements for wealthy clientele. But when two of the clones (Ewan McGregor, Scarlett Johanssen) begin to question their fate and the motives of their keepers, they escape into the real world and The Island becomes just another Michael Bay action extravaganza, albeit an impressively exciting one. With elaborate chase scenes and a high-tech feast of CGI to dazzle the eye, The Island recycles much of the plot from 1979's Clonus while borrowing elements from Logan's Run, Gattaca and Minority Report, and while it's not as smartly conceived as those earlier films, there's no denying that, in many ways, it's Bay's best film to date. --Jeff Shannon

    Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars A tale of survival against all odds.......2007-08-10

The Island is an incredible sci-fi movie about the struggle to survive and the fight for freedom. It stars Ewan McGregor as Lincoln 6-Echo, who is part of a community of people in 2019, living an existence where every aspect of their lives is monitored and controlled. They have been told that the Earth has suffered a catastrophe, making the outside world poisonous and that they are the only survivors. They lead a boring life where their only hope is that they'll win the lottery and be taken to live on the 'Island', the last uncontaminated place on Earth. Lincoln has a very big problem. He's just discovered that everything he's been told is a lie. Everyone who wins the lottery dies so their organs can be removed. He needs to save his best friend, the dazzlingly beautiful Jordan 2-Delta (Scarlett Johansson), escape the complex, discover the truth about his existence and figure out a way to save everyone else from certain death.

As many people have pointed out there's plenty of action in the movie, especially car chases. But this does not detract from the movie at all. On the contrary it adds to the suspense and really makes the viewer sympathise with Lincoln and Jordan. All they want is to live a normal life but everyone is trying to kill them and the lives of all their friends rests on their survival.

The world of 2019 hasn't changed much from ours. Computers are better, cars look a bit sleeker and there's the occasional jetbike or hovertrain. But the best thing is that you can extend your lifespan by having cloned organ transplants as long as you're rich enough.

But the movie isn't all bleak. The clones are very child-like when it comes to their thoughts and language. Their goofy smiles and confused, naive reactions to various situations provides much comic relief. Steve Buscemi also contributes to the fun. All of the cast give a good performance and there are plenty of interesting characters aside from the main ones. Jones 3-Echo is charmingly naive and Dr. Merrick is a force of pure evil. The Island is definitely a must-have.

4 out of 5 stars Closer to reality than you might think.......2007-06-30

One of the great untold tragedies of the 20th century was the prevalence of medical testing on unwitting subjects. Some Americans have probably heard of the Tuskegee airmen, black American servicemen who became unwitting test subjects for medical experiments. But how many people are aware of the medical testing performed on ignorant prisoners, on poor people on various Caribbean islands, or the large-scale testing of vaccines on African villagers throughout the latter half of the 20th century. The latter tragedy was the background for the movie "The Constant Gardener" but it was kept in the background. This movie takes medical experimentation and puts it front and center in the middle of America.

The plot is simple; two clones discover that they were created to have their organs harvested. They then fight to escape, and then to help others like them escape. The story takes on the issues of cloning, genetic engineering, mind control, and even the power of corporations operating in the medical sphere. Yes the story has the requisite action scenes and love scene needed for any Hollywood flick, but it also has enough scenes to explore the medical and moral issues involved. We have Lincoln's real counterpart, a rich, spoiled yuppie who needs replacement organs because his are suffering from STD's he has picked up from various women. Then there is the scene when Scarlett Johansson's character sees the son of her real counterpart. And then there is the scene where Djimon Hounsou's character parallels the medical cloning with the atrocities he witnessed in his homeland in Africa. All in all, this was a great action movie with heart and a meaning. A great watch.

2 out of 5 stars An unoriginal adaptation of "Logan's Run" meets "The Fast & the Furious Furious"........2007-06-23

How disappointing & predictable. The entire premise is a poor "clone", pun intended, from a story about clones. "Logan's Run" is one of my ATF's. Michael York played Logan 5. In "The Island" Ewan McGregor character's name is Lincoln 6 Echo. In "Logan's Run", Jenny Agutter played Jessica 6. Scarlett Johannson's character is Jordan 2 Delta. Oh yeah, Richard "Jordan" was the antagonist in Logan's Run. Coincidence?

The premise of both stories is that an past cataclysmic atomic event requires everyone to live underground. Logan & Jessica are destined for "renewal". After "decontamination", Lincoln 6 Echo & Jordan 2 Delta were promised life on "The Island". In the finale, the destruction of the underground complex & subsequent exodus scenes are almost identical to "Logan's Run". Frankly, I do not recall so many car crashes in a Sci-fi thriller. They were obviously miniaturized. "The Island" is an embarrassing blotch on McGregor's & Johansson's otherwise stellar careers.

3 out of 5 stars Nice Effects and Music.......2007-06-14

I don't think there was anything really innovative about this movie. It has the same feel as Minority Report as far as the special effects and mixing technology into our modern urban landscape. Ewan and Scarlett give believable performances as naive individuals with the minds of 15 year olds. They movie is overall enjoyable and I think the score is beautiful.

    3 out of 5 stars So so.......2007-06-08

Good special effects and interesting storyline. Unfortunately nothing that I'd recommend for anyone that is not a sci-fi aficionado.

    Product Description

Directed with clinical precision by Academy Award winner Robert Wise, this compelling account of the earth s first biological crisis is perhaps the most chillingly realistic science fiction thriller ever made. After an errant satellite crashes to earth near a remote New Mexico village, the recovery team discovers that almost everyone in the town are victims of a horrible death, with the mysterious exception of an infant and an old homeless man. The survivors are brought to a state-of-the-art laboratory descending five stories beneath the ground where the puzzled scientists race against time to determine the nature of the deadly microbe before it wreaks worldwide havoc. A trailblazer in the areas of special effects and inventive sets, The Andromeda Strain is based on Michael Crichton s best-selling novel that created national paranoia for its topical relevance to the first moon landing.

The best-selling novel by Michael Crichton was faithfully adapted for this taut 1971 thriller, about a team of scientists racing against time to destroy a deadly alien virus that threatens to wipe out life on Earth. As usual with any Crichton-based movie, the emphasis is on an exciting clash between nature and science, beginning when virologists discover the outer-space virus in a tiny town full of corpses. Projecting total contamination, the scientists isolate the deadly strain in a massive, high-tech underground lab facility, which is rigged for nuclear destruction if the virus is not successfully controlled. The movie spends a great deal of time covering the scientific procedures of the high-pressure investigation, and the rising tensions between scientists who have been forced to work in claustrophobic conditions. It's all very fascinating if you're interested in scientific method and technological advances, although the film is obviously dated in many of its details. It's more effective as a thriller in which tension is derived not only from the deadly threat of the virus, but from the escalating fear and anxiety among the small group of people who've been assigned to save the human race. The basic premise is still captivating; it's easy to see how this became the foundation of Crichton's science-thriller empire. --Jeff Shannon

I saw this film In 1971 when I was 13 and it is as good to-day as it wads then.Very enjoyable movie but I would warn younger veiwers to expect a little bit of yucky stuff. The story is very beliveable and for the time the effects are very good.I would reccomend this film to anyone.

5 out of 5 stars first rate scifi: mystery, danger, politics, and accurate science.......2007-07-26

I have not seen this in 35 years, and I must say that it is still a wonderfully rivetting story full of surprises, good characters, and all the virtues of hard scifi. You can believe it, it gets you to think, and is fun to watch.

The thriller aspect - a near-whole town dead - is foremost as experts race against time to halt a contagion of a deadly and mysterious new life form. This is great fun as the mystery is explored and ne dangers discovered.

There is a wonderful inquiry into the nature of life and what extra-terrrestial forms may take, including danger to earth-spawned forms. The scientitst characters transmit their fascination and passion with great success.

Finally, there is also an ethical and political dimension to it, as the scientists wonder as to the purpose of the secret facility - for germ warfare scenarios? - and whether the organism was sought as a weapon for development. These questions are left unresolved. That makes the film truly first rate.

Warmly recommended. It was as interesting and dense as the first time I saw, as a high school freshman.

4 out of 5 stars Sci Fi Writing at its finest.......2007-07-12

When I first saw the Andromeda Strain back in the mid 70's I did'nt quiet yet understand what an impact the movie would have on my way of thinking and what I view and enjoy. I was easy to influence back in those days and found the movie somewhat freightning that the feds could be capable of such things. and now that I am approaching middle age, I still found the movie very exciting even though I know the ending. The Andromeda Strain has made Michael Crichton one of my favorite writers. The movie centers on a military satelite that returns to earth carrying a deadly virus which they name Andromeda which the military and project scoop intends to use for biological warfare, And that's where things gets out of hand. The capsules re-enters earth and lands in Piedmont, Texas killing the entire town.Except an infant and an old man as the towns only survivors. Its up to the scoop scientist to find a solution to the the virus that theatens the entire population of the United States and possibly the world. The movie has its slow moments, But the 1970's scifi genre is worthy of any scf-fi buffs movie collection and at quite a resonable price on amazon.com. And if you like 1970,s Scf-fi check out Soylent Green also at amazon.

3 out of 5 stars Good Story, Wooden Characters.......2007-06-05

The Andromeda Strain is one of the must-see movies I missed in high school when it was first released and one that has remained in the back of my mind as one to see eventually. So, when I saw it on special recently at a local book emporium, I snapped it up.
Well, believe it or not, this is my first experience with an adaptation of the work of Michael Crichton. He has been so hyped over the years, I've ignored him. Imagine my surprise to discover that the Andromeda Strain is based on one of his early novels.
He definitely fed public paranoia here with this one. This was the age of the Vietnam War, when fewer and fewer people believed what US leaders told them. Additionally, there was much general unease about secret projects of the Defense Department and NASA. Agent Orange was just becoming an issue and there was some fear of outside contamination after the recent moon landing. Many wondered what other lethal agents were being concocted in secret, and what could happen if those with oversight lost control of them? Justified paranoia had many thinking the worst and made the Andromeda Strain so credible to many. When viewed today, with the benefit of three decades plus worth of biological and technical crises behind us, many would say that such paranoia remains justified.
I found The Andromeda Strain to be a good story clothed in a language of science that is a mystery to most people. But the characters are largely one-dimensional and the acting itself often very wooden. The worst of these is the female scientist dragged from her lab to participate on the team assigned to save humanity from the mysterious and putatively extraterrestrial plague which had already nearly wiped out the inhabitants of a fictional New Mexico village. Her wise-cracking character reminds me of "Maude" with an education. Then there were the various military men whose dialogue is so lame and stilted as to induce wincing.
However, the story itself helps the viewer overlook the undistinguished cast and gives the viewer cause to reflect on the what-ifs of an actual biological emergency. Only an early form of the virus of political correctness that manifests itself on occasion detracts from an otherwise interesting movie. There are many parts of the film where you will be spellbound. Younger viewers may be blase about the technological marvels revealed in the film, but those over fifty may still find wonderment in what was on the cutting edge for its day.
I recommend the Andromeda Strain as a good specimen of early 1970s science fiction film-making. It isn't the best sci-fi movie I've ever seen, but its far from the worst.

4 out of 5 stars Riveting Science Fiction Thriller.......2007-05-27

There are several types of science fiction movies. The rarest, and for some of us, one of the more interesting types, is one where the focus is on the science rather than the fiction and the hype. There a no big, exciting monsters, but the science is readily evident along with state-of-the-art technology for 1971.

The U.S. government launches a satellite into space to gather material from space. When the satellite returns, it has brought more than just inert matter from space; it has brought something that lives. Unfortunately for the town of Piedmont, the thing that lives is hostile to human life.

The U.S. military gathers scientists from around the country at a secret laboratory called Wildfire to analyze the satellite and to determine whether they can stop the organism from destroying all life on earth. In the meantime, the organism, now called the Andromeda strain, has moved from the town of Piedmont and has killed again.

Though the movie heightens tension by focusing on the threat the organism places on mankind, the real tension is in the laboratory. We learn the foibles of each of the characters and we are pulled into their tension as they attempt to find the organism and try to figure out how to stop it - if they can.

One of the issues that face the team of scientists in the underground laboratory is the nuclear bomb that will destroy the laboratory if an organism should escape. It is the responsibility of one of the scientists to deactivate the bomb. However, not all the deactivations stations are working, and if you are caught in a section where there is a non-working station when all the doors are sealed, the only way out is through the laser-filled core.

"The Andromeda Strain" boasted excellent technology. The graphics showing the underground laboratory were superb for the era. The graphics of the organism replicating were also phenomenal. The setup of the underground laboratory and the decontamination procedures were excellent. If you love the science in science fiction, you will find that this movie is the movie for you. If you prefer action and fiction in your science fiction movies, then you may want to pass this classic by.

    Enjoy!

This massive, in-depth study of the dark Western icon comes off with mixed results. Trying to capture the whole life, (warts and all) of the lawman-criminal-brother-fortune hunter, director Lawrence Kasdan gains points for sheer scale, giving us a rich epic painted in dark colors with gritty settings. But the visual poetry and extensive foreshadowing ruin the dramatic drive. Some scenes have as much impact as stalker movies; you're just waiting for someone to get knocked off. As Earp, Kevin Costner is not afraid to look rumpled and play colorlessly (as in The Bodyguard), but it saps the energy of this 3-hour-plus film. The only relief is Dennis Quaid as a droll Doc Holiday, a much more engaging character. New faces Linden Ashby and Joanna Going (as an Earp brother and a lover, respectively) are solid finds, though the remainder of the female cast is barely given anything to do. Best is the first half, with Costner, as hip as he was in his Silverado days, going through a series of ups and downs until he accidentally finds his profession. Great set design (Ida Random) utilizes dozens of similar settings that always look distinctive. Recommended to fans of the star and the genre, but the story never justifies its length. --Doug Thomas

    Description

Kevin Costner plays the most famous lawman ever to stride the Wild West. In a gritty, complex portrayal hailed as a "classic American performance" (Bob Campbell, Newhouse Newspapers), Academy Award winner Costner (Dances with Wolves, The Bodyguard) plays the man who became a myth in acclaimed director Lawrence Kasdan's (The Big Chill, Silverado) epic, action-filled saga. Gene Hackman, an Oscar winner for Unforgiven, as Wyatt's iron-willed father, and Dennis Quaid (The Big Easy, The Right Stuff) as Earp's deadly best friend Doc Holliday add power to this mammoth, hard-hitting Western. From Wichita to Dodge City to the O.K. Corral in Tombstone, Arizona, Wyatt Earp is a thrilling journey of romance, adventure and desperate, heroic action.

4 out of 5 stars Could have been better, could have been worse........2007-09-12

First off, I'm a nut for movies about Wyatt Earp. From John Ford's My Darling Clementine to two John Sturges' films Gunfight at the O.K. Corral & Hour of the Gun to even George Cosmatos' Tombstone. It's interesting to see how each film tackles the western legend of honor and vengence. It's also interesting to note that no matter how closer to depicting the actual events the later films, including this one, has gotten, one thing never changes. The Earps are always shown as the good guys and the Clanton/McLaury "gang" as the outlaws. In truth, the events in Tombstone Arizona in the early 1880's was mostly a turf war. Both sides wanted control of Tombstone for the purpose of making money and both sides were unwilling to compromise. Both groups had the "law" on their side with the Earps as town Marshalls and Cochise County Sheriff John Behan joining the Clanton/McLaury side.

What makes Costner's "Wyatt Earp" unique to all the other films is for the first time we see the early life of Wyatt. We see him as a happy-go-lucky young man in awe of all that is around him. We get to see the tragedy of the death of his first wife and how it effected him. And we see him turn into the cold, stubborn person he became. Costner does a good job in his portrayal of Earp and the filming of the movie is outstanding. And for one of the first times that I know of, we see the character of Jame Earp portrayed. In most, if not all, other films it's mostly Wyatt, Virgil & Morgan, although "Gunfight at the O.K. Corral" did have a small part of a younger Earp (Warren?) who ends up getting killed early on.

On the character of Doc Holiday, it's my opinion that Dennis Quaid here has done the best job at portaying and sick, surly, and almost suicidal drunkard & killer that Holiday is know to have been. His one redeeming quality is his loyalty to Wyatt. A close second is Victor Mature in the mostly fictional "My Darling Clementine."

Some of the downsides to this movie: It's long, too long. I understand it's an epic but there are times when certain scenes have a filler feel to them, just not necessary. The music is pretty forgettable. And the character of Josie, played by Joanna Going, is not very compelling. The actress does a decent job but in comparing her to, say, Dana Delany in Tombstone, she's just not the force that you can imagine grabbing Wyatt's affection after all the years of hiding behind his sorrow.

All-in-All, a decent film, worth watching. I would recommend it to any western fan and any Costner fan. Maybe not as good as his western Open Range but believe me, much better that most of his other offerings.

5 out of 5 stars Well worth the 3 hours time you'll invest.......2007-09-11

After reading previous reviews on Costner's "Wyatt Earp" I have to say that most people miss the point of this movie. Rather than trying to be an entertaining "Indiana Jones cliff-hanger" I feel the film's producers and director wanted more of a biography of the Earp family that is more historically accurate, as opposed to a "rock 'em sock 'em" adventure. This is why the film runs so long, it needs to tell a long story. The Earp's time in Tombstone and the famous OK Corral gunfight was only a fraction of the Earp's existence. It has been made into, via Hollywood and endless story-telling throughout the years, much more than it really was -- a feud between rival factions that was common in America's move West during the 19th century.

In my opinion, if the makers of the film made any blunders in the story-line and plot in regards to making an interesting big-budget western epic, they dwell too much on the old Hollywood formula of making the famous gunfight the "excitement fulcrum," thus forcing the early part of the film to spend lots of time leading up to it. This forces the rest of the film's story of the "vengeance ride" -- a part of Wyatt Earp's and Doc Holliday's lives that was by itself exciting, with enough material for its own separate film -- seem anti-climatic. In other words, the film tries to tell too much.

That being said, I highly recommend watching this film, not for its lack of being exciting (it does has its moments however), but as a wonderful western bio-epic that captures the spirit of the old West. Dennis Quaid puts on a stellar performance as Doc Holliday (much better than Val Kilmer's more-or-less comedic approach in "Tombstone"), and it is beautifully shot, with scenes constantly augmented with a soaring soundtrack. Kevin Costner in the lead Wyatt Earp role doesn't try to make something out of nothing by over-acting. He allows the story of the Earps tell itself -- something you don't see much from actors. The strength and appeal of this movie lies in its sum and essence, not its "excitement factor."

As far as the lengthy edit goes, set aside 3 hours of your time, settle back, and get yourself an extra bowl of popcorn. You're in for a treat.

2 out of 5 stars Excuse me, was I yawning?.......2007-09-05

This version of Wyatt Earp's life is not just long, but it's so commercially crafted that I have to ask if every line was written and performed to be a media quote. I'm sure the trailers were very compelling, but.... give me a break! Who's running Hollywood, the Marketing Departments? Perhaps, in another age, this might have been regarded as melodramatic. In this age, two thumbs down.
There are some fine actors here. Unfortunately, they have been written to be and directed to be characters less than the capability of their talent. This movie is not simply a gritty western, nor is it a great romance, nor is it an ambitious biography, but it tries to be all of these without finally defining itself. I want to assume that most of the "facts" of the movie are fairly true, or "Hollywood true," which compelled me to watch it to the end, but the dialogue is patterned and scripted (well, duh!) and predictable. I'm not talking about everyday speech, but the plethora of those one liners that we just know that they must have said.
Foreshadowing is one thing, but orchestrated, TV-level plot revelations are not just an insult to an intelligent viewer, but, alas, boring. To even compare this (as some previous reviewers have) to The Unforgiven is an affront to the Western as a genre. Over-managed, predictable, but of some historical/biographical interest, this version is lamentable not just for the waste of talent we must endure to see it through to the end, but for the offense to the profession of dramatic portrayal. I'm not surprised that the pros panned it.

    5 out of 5 stars Wyatt Earp.......2007-09-04

My wife and I enjoy Westerns. We believe this movie to be one of the all-time best. Kevin Costner, Dennis Quaid and Bill Pullman all do some fine turns at acting in this here movin' picture show.

We purchased the two disc special edition set as some "onery varmint" went and stole our VHS tapes. Probably did us a favor, I reckon.
