Description
Robert De Niro, Sharon Stone and Joe Pesci star in director Martin Scorsese's riveting look at how blind ambition, white-hot passion and 24-karat greed toppled an empire. Las Vegas, 1973, is the setting for this fact-based story about the Mob's multimillion-dollar casino operation, where fortunes and lives were made and lost with a roll of the dice.

Is it just me..........2007-04-28
...or is this the darkest black comedy ever made? I just find Casino so amusing and funny that I hardly even notice the grim violence and harrowing drama. I also think that Casino is far, far superior to the over-rated Goodfellas. Even though it's longer, it passes in a breeze. Casino is just so colorful, multi-layered and intricate despite it's apparent simplicity. The film has three different characters narrating the story but none of it feels like exposition and it's never over-bearing.
Adapted from a true story, the film focuses on the fictional Tangiers Casino in Las Vegas. The boss is Sam 'Ace' Rothstein, his wife, volatile hustler Ginger and his psychotic 'friend' Nicky Santoro. All they needed to do was to keep the cash-flow at the Casino steady to satisfy the bosses back home. But it was just never meant to be. And everything implodes at the end.
Casino is filled with dozens of sub-plots, tangent stories and brilliant side-characters. James Woods is especially funny as a lowlife con-man who can't even win a fight with a ten-year-old girl. Vinny Vella also amuses as long-suffering Artie Piscano. But it's Sharon Stone who walks away with the movie. Despite starring opposite loads of well-established male lead actors she owns Casino. She was absolutely robbed at the Academy Awards when they gave the Oscar to Susan Sarandon. Stone delivered a performance so authentic that it's truly unfair the amount of criticism she gets for her other, less-important films.
The violence will satisfy gore fans. In this lovely film we have a dope with his head in a vice (after getting icepicks in his balls), a truly brutal beating with baseball bats, some moron getting a pen shoved into his neck and a cheater getting his hand mashed by a hammer. Don't let this put you off, that was the old Vegas. Nowadays you just get told not to come back.
I know most people will call it sacrilege to condemn Goodfellas but Casino is just the better film of the two, plain and simple. Better lighting, far more impressive cinematography and more entertaining characters. It just has so much going for it that Goodfellas did not.
The 1080p HD DVD is absolutely stunning and is surely reference quality stuff. The Dolby Digital+ sound is also amazing and there are plenty of extras. A total must-have.
A good performance from Sharon.......2007-04-24
At 178 minutes long, I was expecting to be bored throughout this film, despite everyone raves about this film, along with Goodfellas. And although I did get a bit restless during it, I did find myself sucked into the film and actually trying to work out what was going to come next.
It starts off with a shocking scene, and then is told in retrospective (or so you think), from ten years previously. I certainly sat up straight up when the film started, as this is the scene you're not expecting. Although when it's repeated towards the end, it does tend to go OTT, by showing it from every angle, and showing the viewer what exactly happened.
Visually, the film is very bright, with the neon lights of the casino, and Robert De Niro's colour blinding suits (who puts pink & orange together?!) Honestly when he first walked onto the screen, I thought his wardrobe was made up by a colour-blind person, as most of his suits were OTT bright, or clashed severely. The brightness of the casino is so well done in HD, you almost start to feel like you're there, it's so real, and captures the bright lights of Vegas perfectly.
I thought Sharon Stone's role was the best out of the entire film, as her character goes through such a journey during the film, and the physical changes in her character are shocking. Her character of Ginger is an ex-hooker, who marries Robert De Niro's character, despite not loving him in the slightest. I think she was seeing dollar signs before her eyes. She becomes a mother, and also turns to drink, which ultimately, leads to a shocking end.
This film is definitely not for the fainthearted. There's a closeup scene of someone snorting cocaine, and Sharon's character, Ginger, snorts some in front of her daughter. The F word is said a grand total of 422 times, a bit unnecessary, including in the narration, which makes it a total of 2.4 times per MINUTE on average. The chain smoking is quite harsh as well, as Robert De Niro constantly had a cigarette in his hand in nearly every single scene. (I pity any non-smoking crew on set.) It was necessary to portray what it was like in those days, when smoking was considered classy, and not frowned upon as it is today. I expected there to be some continuity problems that accompanies a chain-smoking character but Robert always held his cigarettes the same distance from the lit end so that their lengths never appear to change.
This film impressed me, and I can imagine it looks so much better in HD, so it would definitely be better than the old regular DVD. But everyone lumping it along with Goodfellas doesn't bode well, cos everyone HAS to like Goodfellas it seems. It's definitely one to watch on HD, and with a TV that's more like a cinema screen would be good too!
A pretty good movie.......2007-03-12
Overall, I enjoyed the movie very much. It was much better than I expected it to be. The picture was good and it is one of my favourite mafia movies. I would say it is worth the money to go get it. Joe Pesci did a great job playing part of the mafia.
What a picture ! .......2007-02-19
I mean that statement in two ways. First, in my humble opinion, this is Martin Scorcese at his finest. This is better than Goodfellas by a wide margin. All of the regulars give awesome performances in this (even Sharon Stone, who I can't stand!). If you like mafia pictures, this is the BEST one to own. I also mean that it's a great picture due to the fact that it's on HD-DVD. The picture is astonishingly vivid and clear and the lights of Las Vegas really jump out of the television. It's almost 3-D ! The extras are ample, but I'd say adequate. That's the reason I give it 4 stars instead of 5. There is the obligitory commentary, deleted scenes, and a couple featurettes. It's all whipped cream and a cherry on top of an excellent sundae ! I do like that you can watch the extras and the movie at the same time with commentary running. This and Batman Begins are the reasons you should own an HD DVD player ! Note: I have the HD DVD drive attached to my Xbox 360 and it works brilliantly !

Directed by Sidney Lumet (Serpico) and penned by Joel Schumacher (Batman and Robin), this lavish 1978 adaptation of the Broadway hit The Wiz was the biggest production filmed in New York City up to that point, utilizing the newly revamped Astoria Studios and locations around the city. Diana Ross, Michael Jackson, Nipsey Russell, and Ted Ross (reprising his Tony-winning role as the Lion) star in this Academy Award-nominated musical for the whole family.
The Wiz is probably the grandest take on L. Frank Baum's classic tale The Wizard of Oz. The production team created sets with a sense of urban magic and spectacle: a New York subway station literally comes to life, and the massive plaza between the World Trade Center towers is transformed into the Emerald City, featuring nearly 400 dancers with three costume changes. Like all good musicals, the Quincy Jones arrangements are highly hummable long after viewing (especially the funky "Ease On Down the Road" and the inspirational "Brand New Day"). In an era before MTV, the camera stays nearly stationary as Ross and Lena Horne vocally soar through their numbers. Their stage-like performances successfully make the leap to film, making The Wiz a testament to their singing talents and star presence. The then-thirtysomething Ross raised some eyebrows playing the traditionally teenaged Dorothy, but she and her supporting cast (including Richard Pryor as the Wiz) carry the tunes with an infectious verve that will appeal to folks of all ages. --Shannon Gee

A classic for historical reasons, not artistic ones........2007-08-13
The movie is indicative of the era in which it was produced. But more than that, "The Wiz" was the first real black musical, and for that reason, is dear to the heart of America. Dianna Ross and Michael Jackson are entertaining at best in this movie. Jackson is certainly a better performer overall than Ross.
If this movie, or anything similar to it were to be presented at this time in history, it would be laughably inept. However, since this movie played an important part in bringing black culture into American arts, it deservs it's place in my collection.
Exciting to watch!.......2007-08-03
This is my grand daughter's favorite movie..I got her hooked and now , at 4 years old, she is a Wiz expert..She knows every song in the movie!..I had to have watched this movie 3.5 million times!..LOL
THE WIZ--AN AFRICAN-AMERICAN CLASSIC!!!!!!!!!.......2007-08-03
I remember when I first saw this movie back in the early 1980s when I was a young girl. I adore this movie. Even though I'm 30 years old, I'm still young at heart. Even though I feel that Diana Ross was too old for the role, I still think that this musical was and still is a superb movie. You have to understand something. The reason why I think that The Wiz didn't do so well in the movies back in 1978 was not only because Diana Ross was improperly miscast, but also because white America at the time wasn't ready for African-Americans to remake their favorite all-American whitebread movie that came out in 1939. It was unheard of. If The Wiz was made in the 1990s, it would be very well-received since black movies dominated the 1990s, and blacks were more accepted in white homes in the 1990s, but in 1978, it was a whole different story. They were not ready to have a "nigger" version of "The Wizard Of Oz". It was an insult at the time. Thank God for VHS and DVD. When The Wiz was on VHS and DVD, it was starting to be VERY popular. It was more well-received than when it first hit the theatres in 1978. It became a cult classic, especially within the African-American community. This movie was very spiritual and uplifting that you would think that it's a gospel movie. It sends a motivational message to children, teenagers, and adults that you should never be afraid of acheiving your goals. I love this movie so much. I'm glad that I'm part of the generation that grew up on this movie. I would take this movie over The Wizard of Oz anyday. Let them racist people hate on this movie. The Wiz is here to stay!!!!!!!!
Believe In Yourself
Fun watch.......2007-06-30
The first time I saw this move, I was about 9years old. I couldn't completely enjoy it because the monkies scared me. Today I can fully apreciate this film. It has a wide range of soulfull cast and motown music. Sit down with your family and watch this movie with a new mind. Leave Judy Garland (Dorathy) with The Wizzard of Oz, and get ready to dance along with the Wiz.
The same story.......2007-06-13
Only it's in New York, and a few new twists from the Wizerd of Oz. And all the actors are black. great movie!

Scorsese Scores [ 7 l 7 l 7 ].......2007-09-14
I probably haven't seen this movie for about, oh, five years. Now after watching it again, I remember why it was so unforgettable. From the actual Casino, to the acting on all parts... this movie is complete.
Success(Taxi Driver) after success(Raging Bull) after success(Goodfellas). In my opinion Scorsese is one of the top three movie directors of all time at showing us, what it's like to be a gangster. Just over this last year, I've watched all of Scorsese's movies more than twelve times each(next on the list, Casino).
Robert De Niro in the late 80's and early 90's for me, was a gangster. I was twelve years old when I first watched this and trust me that's what he was in my eyes. Now I just see him as one of the best actors of his generation. From award wins to being flat out hilarious, I envy the talent he has.
Joe Pesci(My Cousin Vinny) and Sharon Stone(Basic Instinct) melted on and off screen during their careers. I like them both as actors and individuals. Resembling a sorta couple of two-faced/thieves such as Bonnie and Clyde. Contributing everything to the supporting cast. Although, one thing I do think of whenever I do watch this movie; is how that I think this was the last great film in both of their careers. It's a movie to watch for that reason alone.
Imagine watching the Scorsese film "Goodfellas", excluding and including a couple of faces, with new characters and new settings. And that's what you get, better badder gangsters. It's pretty much of what would've happened if "Goodfellas" had a happy ending.
De Niro, Pesci, Stone, Scorsese, Gangsters, and Gambling. If one of these names or words triggers a part of your brain when reading, watch "Casino". It's a classic for all of these reasons.
I don't know if this review will be that helpful, or new in anyway. But it's nice to encourage to have fun. "And that's that"
GoodFellas The Departed (Two-Disc Special Edition) My other two most favorite Scorsese films today.
Casino - Review.......2007-07-24
Martin Scorsese paints a colorful portrait of Las Vegas in the early 1970s as the oasis of glamor and corruption that it was. Against this backdrop, the story chronicles the rise and fall of three central characters: a play-by-the-rules casino owner with mob connections (Robert De Niro), his childhood friend and Mafia underboss (Joe Pesci) and an ex-prostitute with expensive taste and a driving will to get what she wants (Sharon Stone).
Casino.......2007-07-03
We received our purchase in a timely manner and it was is good shape. This was a pleasant experience.
What a film.......2007-07-02
The downfall of this empire is a beauty to watch. This film is actually terrifying in its realistic portrayal of how the greatest of things can crumble to mere...crumbs. This film is a powerhouse, a knockout, it is phenomenal in its storytelling, acting (which is too realistic), direction (Martin, baby) and poignant ability to make you believe that this can happen to anyone.
Great Movie.......2007-06-25
Casino is a underdog for sure, it did get some awards and whatnot but it did not do as well in the public eye as say Goodfellas. But enough of that, the movie was well written and Sharon Stone was phenomenal in this true story about a real casino boss Frank "Lefty" Rosenthal, play as Sam "Ace" Rothstein (De Niro). It was Flimed in Las Vegas in front of the (now tore down)Landmark Hotel and flimed in the Riviera. The Flim was based on the Stardust Casino & Hotel(also now tore down). Some great acting all around with Robert De Niro, Joe Pesci, James Woods, Alan King, and Don Rickles. Not the best, it's almost as good as Goodfellas but still a 5-Star Classic. (Sorry about Grammar!)

Filter a Twilight Zone vibe through Stephen King's brain and you get Nightmares & Dreamscapes, an uneven but generally entertaining collection of eight tales that originally (2006) aired on TNT. There is no unifying theme here; although King's short stories provided the source material, there are six directors and seven screenwriters represented, so the episodes offer a variety of looks and styles, with content ranging from monsters to mind games, from pure fantasy to pulp fiction, from genuinely scary to merely unsettling. Still, a certain ineffably "King-ian" sensibility, combining elements of horror, terror, suspense, and whimsy, is always in evidence, as are the popular writer's own preoccupations (with authors who may or not be stand-ins for King himself, rock 'n' roll, and guys who won't ask for directions while their wives complain, inevitably leading them into very nasty situations).
Among the highlights: In "Battleground," a merciless hit man (William Hurt) offs a toy manufacturer and then finds himself attacked in his own apartment by a battalion of indefatigable toy soldiers; directed by Brian Henson, the episode has no dialogue and some terrific effects work. In "Umney's Last Case," William H. Macy is amusing as a crime writer who cruelly toys with his literary alter ego, an arch, fedora-wearing gumshoe (also Macy); it's an acting tour de force and a story that takes some deft and intriguing turns. "The Road Virus Heads North," with Tom Berenger as a horror novelist who finds himself pursued by
well, by a painting (guess you had to be there), is perhaps the scariest of the lot; it's also the best shot, with a cool jazz soundtrack and a nifty ending. Less successful is "Crouch End," set in a sinister part of London where "thin spots" in the earth lead to creepy new dimensions (nice premise, but it's overwritten and fails to sustain its Twilight Zone weirdness), while "You Know They Got a Hell of Band" is only fitfully effective in its depiction of Rock & Roll Heaven, Oregon, a town where Elvis is mayor and the rest of the living dead range from Hendrix and Joplin to Duane Allman and Buddy Holly. The three-disc set's decent if unexceptional special features include "inside looks" at the making of several episodes, actor interviews, and more. --Sam Graham

they protrayed the stories well and each story was exciting! i enjoyed it very much
Nightmares .......2007-08-08
My wife and I have been waiting quite awhile for the release of this box set, having read the book I found the dvd to be a pleasure to watch, all the stories came flooding back to us as we watched each film, the standout to be Battleground, the effects were fantastic, going beyond what we thought they would be for a mini series, the least popular being Crouch End, did not quite follow the story line, well seven out of eight is not bad, we laughed at the Autopsy Room Four, freaked at the The Road Virus Heads North and loved Umney's Last Case.
This mini series was filmed in Melbourne Australia, of which we are residents, many fine US and Australian actors were used and many great locations, showcasing this wonderful city we live in, so do yourself a favour, sit down with a bowl of popcorn and watch this mini series, you wont be disappointed, the extras on the dvd are also a welcome addition, very informative and so lacking from many dvd's sold today, the packaging is also first rate, glossy and up market.
Decent Collection of Stories.......2007-07-30
Disc One:
1.Battleground- A killer for hire recieves an unexpected delivery of toy soldiers. Tiny terrors on a mission of vengeance... This one was one of the best in the set. It actually reminded me of a Twilight Zone episode i once saw.
2.Crouch End- london cabbie warns 2 american honeymooners not to go to ''Crouch End''. This one was bad. Really cheesy effects too.
3.Umney's Last Case- a writer swaps places with a 1930s private eye he created. The plot thickens.. This one wasnt bad, starred William H Macy.
Disc Two:
1.The end of the whole mess- about a filmmaker whos genius brother conducts a worldwide experiment that goes horribly wrong. Nice premise, poor execution. Decent story overall.
2.The Road Virus Heads North- a mysterious painting and a writer. This one started off good then ended lackluster.
3.The Fifth Quarter- ex con and his wife grab their one get rich quick chance to escape a miserable life. It was ok.
Disc Three:
1.Autopsy Room Four- man on the slab is still alive and can hear and feel everything thats going on, Docs think hes dead. This one was probably the best out of them all.
2.You know they got a hell of a band- married couple enters unmapped burg called rock and roll heaven but the price of admission is high. This one was ok.
Maybe some of these would have been better left in the book. With Stephen King's movies and mini-series theres hits and misses. Some of his movies are great and then there are some things like this that would maybe have been better as whole movies per story or not done at all and left in the book. If youre expecting stories as good as the Twilight Zone, dont bother. If you want something decent to entertain you with hits and misses or you are a big Stephen King fan then get it. Overall it was ok but i dont think i'll watch them again. Maybe ill read the book instead.
Dissapointing.......2007-07-08
I watched a couple of these on TV and could not get into any of them.I like kings novels but not these shows.
More good stories by the master........2007-07-08
This DVD was very good and did not leave me disappointed. The stories seemed to follow along really well. I would recommend this to anyone who loves Stephen King.

Walter Matthau is in peak form in Hopscotch, a featherweight spy-game comedy in which he plays a CIA agent who's way smarter than his dimwitted superiors. That's the fantasy part--this amusing cat-and-mouse game is so lopsided that you can't take it seriously. The movie's charm is derived from the sardonic pleasure with which Matthau makes his pursuers look like idiots, after they've targeted him for "termination" for publishing a tell-all memoir about his tenure in "the Company." He's no stool pigeon, however; it's his boss (played with blustery thick-headedness by the great Ned Beatty) who's abusing his power, so Matthau recruits an old lover (Glenda Jackson) to join him in a globetrotting game of clandestine cleverness. Under Ronald Neame's too-casual direction, this is a not-so-wild goose chase, but Matthau and Jackson (reuniting after they had fun making the 1978 comedy House Calls) have an easygoing chemistry that's nicely balanced with Matthau's cantankerous shenanigans. --Jeff Shannon
Description
Miles Kendig knows too much. One of the CIA's top international operatives, he suddenly finds himself relegated to a desk job in an agency power play. Unwilling to go quietly, Kendig, with the aid of a chic Viennese widow, puts himself back in the game by writing a memoir exposing the innermost secrets of every major intelligence agency in the world. The CIA wants Kendig dead, but he refuses to cooperatehe's having too much fun. Based on Brian Garfield's best-selling novel, and starring the inimitable comic team of Walter Matthau and Glenda Jackson, Ronald Neame's Hopscotch is a smart and stylish tale of international intrigue and a cat-and-mouse comedy.

IT'S JUST FUN.......2007-08-24
Walter Matthau doing what he does best. Screwed over by CIA management, he makes them pay by using superior wit for revenge. Great movie. Great fun. My wife sat through the entire movie and she never does that.
Walter Matthau.......2007-06-26
Very funny and light hearted movie. I have had a taped version for many years and it was wearing out so I was very happy to be able to purchase it on DVD.
It's an excellent comedy with great acting by all. A stick it to the CIA plot which is done with a lot of humor.
It is a pleasnt alternative to blow em up and kill everyone movie.
Hilariously clever.......2007-04-11
This movie is so funny, it seems that everyone should know about it! It has a clever plot; you will never guess the ending if you're a first time viewer. The acting is superb; I am guessing the person who chose the cast was a genious. It is a must have for every video library.
A delightful comedy worth watching again and again.......2007-03-07
Walter Matthau, Glenda Jackson, Sam Waterston, and Herbert Lom are all quite delightful in this film ... The subtle and clever humor is a nice break from the in-your-face brazen humor found so often today. The combination of Matthau and Jackson is a bit unexpected, but the chemistry really works! I am very very glad that Matthau decided to go through with this project, as it ranks as one of my favorite movies! The commentary by writer and director are well worth listening to. I thoroughly enjoyed reading the book on which this movie is based; it's easy to see why it earned an Edgar for the author!
Nicely Done.......2007-03-03
I just watched this movie tonight. I love Walter Matthau, and there's plenty of his classic character bits here to keep the viewer constantly entertained. Although it received mixed reviews when it came out in 1980, Hopscotch still remains popular and is driven by a more than average, clever plot. Glenda Jackson has good chemistry with Walter, even though there's an age difference to deal with. And there's a surprisingly good deal of Mozart and Rossini sprinkled throughout the sound track, mainly because Matthau loved these composers. Matthau's character, who's writing an expose (his memoirs) of the CIA, needs writing music and inevitably puts on a record of a Mozart opera (The Marriage of Figaro). This was Matthau's own idea. He seemed to have brought much to this movie. For instance, he dreamed up the sequence where he becomes reacquainted with Glenda Jackson via a conversation with her about wines. That scene works very nicely. You won't waste your time watching this one. I recommend it as a good brief escape from our mad world. Also, don't miss the introductory commentary from the director and the writer.

Director Martin Scorsese reunites with members of his GoodFellas gang (writer Nicholas Pileggi; actors Robert De Niro, Joe Pesci, and Frank Vincent) for a three-hour epic about the rise and fall of mobster Sam "Ace" Rothstein (De Niro), a character based on real-life gangster Frank "Lefty" Rosenthal. (It's modeled after on Wiseguy and GoodFellas and Pileggi's true crime book Casino: Love and Honor in Las Vegas.) Through Rothstein, the picture tells the story of how the Mafia seized, and finally lost control of, Las Vegas gambling. The first hour plays like a fascinating documentary, intricately detailing the inner workings of Vegas casinos. Sharon Stone is the stand out among the actors; she nabbed an Oscar nomination for her role as the voracious Ginger, the glitzy call girl who becomes Rothstein's wife. The film is not as fast paced or gripping as Scorsese's earlier gangster pictures (Mean Streets and GoodFellas), but it's still absorbing. And, hey--it's Scorsese! --Jim Emerson
Customer Reviews:
Another excellent "mob" movie from Scorsese.......2007-09-05
"Casino" is a "mob" movie set in 1970s and 80s Las Vegas.
It's from the same team behind "Goodfellas" - Martin Scorsese (director and co-writer) and Nicholas Pileggi (co-writer and writer of the original book) and even includes the incomparable Robert De Niro and Joe Pesci in the lead roles. It is very similar in style and tone to this earlier film.
This similarity detracts from its impact somewhat but "Casino" is still a very good film. It contains many memorable moments, good music, and is stylishly directed by Scorsese.
James Fontanetta.......2007-08-28
This movie was a disappointed. I think it was overrated. I expected a lot more. If you want to see great films in the same genre, try Goodfellas, Donnie Brasco, The Godfather
True story.......2007-08-26
Ace Rostein retired to Florida and now owns a restaurant. However this is his story of life as a mafia bookmaker and later casino operator back when the mafia ran vegas.
Corey Cotta, Author of All of Yesterdays Tomorrows.
You thought I was laying it...........2007-07-14
Casino is based on the true story of Ace Rothstein and Nicky Santoro as they become part of the decline of the mafia's stronghold on the Vegas gambling scene. De Niro and Pesci deliver some of their best performances as their frienship quickly turns into a rivalry, leaving them with some harsh decisions to make. You can also expect a solid/hilarious performace courtesy of Lester Diamond (James Woods), who creates quite a few problems for Rothstein in addition to his casino issues.
This film will grab you from the openeing scene until the closing credits. If you are a fan of mob movies then this is a must see.
PRETTY GOOD MOVIE.......2007-06-13

Amazon.com essential video
Peter Bogdanovich directed this sensitive and moving story about a teenage boy, Rocky (Eric Stoltz), who lives with severe facial deformities and poor prognosis for survival beyond childhood. The film concentrates on that threshold-of-adulthood period familiar to past and present 16-year-olds, folding together common experiences of youth (love, hassles with mom, a desire to travel) with the special burdens endured by the hero. Stoltz, absolutely unrecognizable under lots and lots of prosthetic makeup, is quite good, as are Cher (as Rocky's mother) and Sam Elliott (Rocky's father figure). More than a tearjerker, the film is a genuine celebration of all that is most precious in life, even more to those who have nothing to take for granted. --Tom Keogh

I just love this movie, so happy that i could purchase this and own it
"A Film That Stirs Your Soul And Touches Your Heart".......2007-08-05
The film "MASK"is a film that gives our generation a positive voice.A voice that says,"In the negative side of Life where there is often pain, despair, discouragement.""MASK"is a lift for the heart and spirit of humanity. This film is a true story.A story of courage, hope, determination against incredible odds.It shows how cold and judgemental society can be,especially when they lack the understanding of the afflications and suffering of their fellow humans.Rocky Dennis was an individual to admire, love, and be inspired by.Eric Stolz is a stellar actor whom I feel put his heart and soul into the portrayal of Rocky. He is one of my favorites along with Sam Elliott and Cher.Sam Elliott, perfect in the role of Gar,is a excellent father figure and has never disappointed with his acting talent.I've loved every film he has done. It's hard to nail down which film is his best, but I think this film should definitely be considered for him receiving an oscar.Cher, whom I've loved since her days with the "Sonny and Cher"show has definitely reached far beyond her talent into the acting realm ,and has not only achieved great fame as a singer and performer in concerts, but knocked fans out with her many great films. She is also a huge talent and success as a actress. This film, where she portrays Rocky Dennis mother,is very well done, she really gets into every role she takes on.Rusty Dennis had a big heart full of love and hope for her son Rocky. It was a moving experience because Cher played the role, and did it well. This film is definitely one of Cher's best.I hope that anyone who watches this film, isn't just entertained, but deeply moved and inspired as I have been. The music of Bob Seger and Bruce Springsteen makes the impact of the film even stronger.I,by the way have Cerebral Palsey.I've had it since birth.I know what it is to be treated unfairly by cruel, ignorant people, who think you're weird because you look different, don't walk "normal".Disabilities are in all of us.They don't show as much in some as they do in others.I like to think of mine as "A Little Inconvienance"Rocky Dennis triumphed over his, touching lots of hearts and lives.God Bless you Rocky,Rusty,Gar,for showing us all how to really live, beating the odds. Thanks to a compassionate mother for letting Rocky's story be told. Thanks too to a stellar cast, and a director with likewise hearts,to tell Rocky's story so warmly on the screen. To all of you fellow film buffs out there, count your blessings open your hearts, buy this film.I guarentee, you will be impressed, moved, inspired, and will never feel that you got a tougher break in life. This film speaks for all generations past and present. It is,in my opinion a blockbuster classic!
I love it,- it's a classic!!!.......2007-05-09
I love this move. It's so full of emotions. It's about Rocky (Eric Stoltz), a 16 year old boy who has a deformed face. His mother is Rusty (played by Cher) and she really fights for her son to have a normal life. Both of them have their devoted friends in a biker environment. I've seen it a lot of times and I cry every time. Heartfelt and excellent acting
On the bright side, Cher remains fully clothed.......2007-02-12
I liked it so much better when Eric Stoltz lived with that other family and decided to shack up with his tomboy drummer next-door neighbor chick with the new wave hairdo and duds, and tight little body. He turned down the annoying, future homemaker-looking Mrs. Popularity in the process. Amazing! Damn, it looks like Eric got stung in the face by a wild pack of bees for hours and then had his head stretched on a rack after being taken in by his new foster mom and biker gang. Don't worry, these are the same bikers as the ones who deliver cute little stuffed animals to kids with leukemia, so it's all good. Not! Later, if you'll remember, Eric devolves into a drug addict bank robber in Paris and eventually earns a living selling drugs to folks like Vincent Vega, an inane, puffy-faced and high-ranking Scientology official. So I guess you can at least partly blame Eric for "Battlefield Earth."
How About A 2-Disc Set? With A Documentary About The Real Rocky Dennis.......2006-08-27
I am not going to write about the movie as what more can be said, its incredible, emotional, touching, etc.
I think they need to make a definitive 2-disc edition.
On it, should at least be the following:
-All the extras from this version plus new extras
-A documentary about the real Rocky Dennis, including actual pictures, interviews, etc.
-Where is Eric Stoltz in the extras? Should have interviews with Eric about what it was like playing Rocky Dennis, etc.
- I love the Springsteen music in it but also enjoyed the music in the theatrical version so they should include that version on the 2nd disc.
-At the end of the movie after the credits roll Cher comes on and talks about the disease/disfigurement. This should be longer and could include experts talking about it like doctors, family members, etc. I also think they should've put the Cher interview on the actual special features listing in the dvd and on the back of the case, why have it buried at the end of the movie where not everyone will see it?
hopefully you found this review helpful, if enough people did, maybe the studio will see the demand and release a definitive 2-disc set.

It's hard to ignore the sad and conspicuous absence of the late John Belushi, but this long-delayed sequel to 1980's The Blues Brothers still has Dan Aykroyd--as Chicago bad boy and blues rocker Elwood Blues--to keep the music alive. Once again, Elwood's trying to reunite the original Blues Brothers Band, and this time he's got a strip-joint bartender (John Goodman) and a 10-year-old orphan named Buster (J. Evan Bonifant) joining him at center stage. Believing that Elwood has kidnapped the kid, the cops are hot on his trail as the reunited band hits the road for the Battle of the Bands in Louisiana and the All-Star Blues Jam that ends the movie in a rockin' blaze of glory. It's a shameless clone of the first film, and nobody--especially not Aykroyd or director John Landis--seems to care that the story's not nearly as fun as the music that's used to stretch it out. Of course there's a seemingly endless parade of stunts, including a nonstop pileup of police cars that's hilariously absurd, but what really matters here--indeed, the movie's only saving grace--is the great lineup of legendary blues musicians. Aretha Franklin, James Brown, Junior Wells, Eric Clapton, B.B. King, Jonny Lang, Eddie Floyd, and Blues Traveler are among the many special guests assembled for the film, and their stellar presence makes you wonder if the revived Blues Brothers shouldn't remain an obscure opening act. The collector's edition DVD includes production photos, the theatrical trailers, and a behind-the-scenes featurette about the making of the film including interviews with the principal cast. --Jeff Shannon
Customer Reviews:
It's for the music.......2007-07-17
If you're looking for a film that Gene Siskel or Pauline Kael would approve of, then don't go near this. Just don't. The plot's been done a hundred times, including the first Blues Brothers movie.
What makes the thing worthwhile is the music. How hard do you think it was to get all these people together? The last scene alone is worth the $10 the DVD will cost you. B.B. King, Dr. John, and Clapton on the same stage? James Brown and Blues Travelers in the same movie?
Think of the film as a compilation album with lots of car crashes.
"What kind of a man wears sunglasses in a room full of naked women?".......2007-07-12
"Blues Brothers 2000" is a disappointing sequel, and yet for some reason I preferred it to the other disappointing sequel from the World of Aykroyd: "Ghostbusters II". Maybe it's because the greater amount of time that passed between films makes BB2K feel more nostalgic. Or maybe it's because, to the extent that BB2K is a retread of the original "Blues Brothers", the repetition feels more natural and logical than in GB2.
When Elwood is released from prison and discovers that Jake has passed on, what exactly do viewers expect him to do other than attempt to reunite the band? What else would he do to rediscover meaning and purpose in his life? Therefore it makes perfect sense that the first two-thirds of BB2K echoes plot elements from the previous film. Where BB2K falls down is in the third act -- the Battle of the Bands at Queen Mousette's -- which is a spectacular musical climax but leaves much to be desired in comedy-action terms.
I was surprised by how moved I was to see the character of Elwood in another movie, in particular when he plays his harmonica for the first time. But the most remarkable scene in BB2K is probably "Ghost Riders in the Sky", which combines American popular music, a supernatural manifestation, and the Bluesmobile doing something amazing. It's the perfect cinematic summation of Dan Aykroyd's interests and career.
Blues Brothers 2000.......2007-04-08
Not as good as the first movie, of course, but worth a look.
music is life.......2007-03-27
I have The Blues Brothers DVD and CD soundtrack
along with the VHS BB 2000 and CD-Gimme Some Lovin'
I prefer the sequal to the original but I wouldn't have one without the other. The original I just had to have in my inventory because of John Belushi.
At first I didn't think I'd like BB 2000 much but John Goodman's performance was tops; the best replacement for Belushi.
The music was fantastic [Cab Calloway-Minnie the Moocher/Aretha Franklin, Think and the song Sweet Home Chicago]
The stunts with the cars had me laughing [I've a quirky sense of humor] I am from Illinois and laugh at certain types of authoritarian stupidity.
If you're a blues fan musically, you just might enjoy this production. It's not the greatest story ever told but it does represent a moment in time. If all you want to do is enjoy watching without being a critic, this just might be as enjoyable to you as it is for me. I love it.
If Dan Aykroyd decides to make a 3rd movie for the Blues Brothers, I'll buy it. Some of the great artists have passed: it's a treat to see them as though they were still with us, providing the great music of their life.
not all bad.......2007-02-19
If nothing else, you gotta love the music. You just can't have the Blues Brothers without John Belushi.

Director John Singleton (Boyz N the Hood, Rosewood) made an earnest effort in this, his second, film to say a great deal that is true and relevant about living and loving in a violent, difficult time in American history. Janet Jackson plays a beautician and poet who withdraws into herself after her boyfriend is murdered by gangsters. The late Tupac Shakur plays a postman who tries to get through to her, and the two travel on a course through urban America, connecting with family and community. Singleton has so much on his mind that the film comes out a terrible muddle, but there is a certain integrity peeking through the fog. Shakur makes a startlingly good impression in his film debut, and Jackson strips away her star veneer to play something like a real person--and entirely succeeds. Maya Angelou wrote the poems that pass as those penned by Jackson's character, and she also appears in the film. --Tom Keogh
Customer Reviews:
Not Singleton's Finest Moment, But Still Worth Watching.......2007-07-11
It's clear what Singleton attempted to do with this one, and I'd say it was a noble effort. Of course the script could've been tighter and the climax stronger and more rewarding, thus resulting in a more worthwhile film. However, in the film's defense, the charismatic Tupac shines while convincingly helming the sole well-conceived role. He's the best reason -- perhaps the only reason -- viewers should join in on the film's road trip to Oakland. He's subtle but confident, forceful but not heavy-handed, complex but genuine -- all the things that have also made him a legendary (and sorely missed) rapper. On the other hand, regarding Ms. Jackson... Well, I'll attempt to simply and kindly take the high road and say she probably shouldn't attempt to act again (unless she takes some drama classes). Janet simply doesn't get it. She doesn't understand the craft. She "acts" throughout the entire movie, something a skilled and experienced performer would never be caught doing. Perhaps Singleton was just too smitten with her to inform her that performing requires more than just emoting and script recitation. I understand that fans of Janet's music will invariably take issue with my comments, but if they'd simply separate her on-screen skills from her (heavily studio-enhanced) musical skills, I believe they'd have to agree with me. And it doesn't help that Janet's character (Justice) isn't a well-written, fully-developed and focused role; that's Singleton's fault -- not Janet's. Also, in the movie, fans of Maya Angelou will enjoy her cameo and the verses she wrote for Janet's character, a poet. And the fan(s) of Regina King will appreciate the challenging, range-revealing character stretch she takes on: she portrays a sassy, shallow, one-dimensional young lady with an attitude (that's something we've never seen her play before). Overall, Poetic Justice isn't one of Sigleton's finest moments, but again, revisiting Tupac's performance makes it entertaining and somewhat worthwhile.
Realler than most.......2007-05-03
This is a great movie. Shows real life, the difficulties trying to communicate to the opposite sex. and growing up with the struggles of everyday life.
Someone wrote terrible movie and Lucky acts like a dog. . .but if you watch the whole thing and understand it. Here is a guy stuck with a girl he is into, already uneasy from earlier. and the only way to get her attention is to call her names. The frustration should of been apparent.
I would say this is one of Tupac's best works on film. His skill only got better as he matured. But since he was so young. He did a good job. And unlike what was said before, he was acting. He wasnt playing himself. Only someone who listen to the media and news reports to make that judgment, would say that. Then to turn around and praise Janet, for her acting cause of her life experiences? that just dont make sense. She did a good job. I think the Poem was too mature for her character. Maybe it would of been better served if she was older and reminiscing on the trip. But it was a little too much for her.
THe rest of the cast is good. Joe Torry, Regina King and Tone Loc are all great. Showing the everday life, and the struggles trying to survive day to day, and connect with someone.
Better than a Hood Movie, its a great Coming of age/ love story. Its more realistic than most.
Janet Jackson at her best!!!!.......2007-02-14
The film Poetic Justice to me is a great one. The first time I saw this film, I fell in love with it, especially the characters. Janet's character, Justice, struck a chord in me. She went through a lot, but she also gained strength. Tupac's character, Lucky, I fell in love with him. Chicago, what an idiot, and Regina King's character, Iesha, interesting. This film is a good one, and I loved it. One of my favorite films of all time!!!
Great Movie - Bad DVD Release........2006-09-24
I want to start by saying that I didn't see this film when it was first released. I saw it when it came on t.v. one night in '98 or '99. Anyways, I enjoyed the film and I believe it parallels what life is like for many people. Althought I intially saw the the t.v. edit, my feeling about the film only deepened when I bought the tape, and later the DVD. (I do have the original artwork on my DVD cover BTW.)
While I buy Janet's portrayl as Justice, in my opinion, it is Tupac who steals the show. Whether or not he is playing himself, it works. I also buy Regina Kings' performance. She is the ignorant and careless friend That I have tried to save from herself.
While the film does go in many directions and leave me with many unanswered questions, for me real-life isn't much different. There's something in this film that I relate to and whenever I want to escape from my own life for a while, this is one of the films I turn to.
I gave it 4 stars because the DVD itself is lacking. I would have given it 3 stars, but it has Directors' Commentary, which is something I enjoy. :o) I also apreciate the addition of the subtitles, but I would have really loved to see a small documentary or even reflections on the film from Miss Jackson, Regina King - Anyone! And I can't believe there's not even one deleted scene. Pitiful. . .
Shot out to Dennis and Michael...two idiots. .......2006-08-08
1. to Michael: Lucky blames Justice because he was late to Oakland because of the time them two spent on the beach (then he realizes that he was just mad at the time and apologizes to her...
to Dennis (who said "at least Tupac is dead"): may Tupac Amaru Shakur rest in peace..God bless his soul. Some people who just don't understand..but the acting was great...you probably just think it's exaggerated cuz you are ignorant and you haven't seen this type of hood drama. It was actually a very real and accurate account of problems that these type of communities face..and how people actually act (fights in relationships, disrespect between men and women. Lucky was treating Justice in a disrespectful manner..but that is just an accurate portrayal of how men in the hood don't know how to come at a woman that he's interested in..so they just trip.
To all of those good-hearted people who would not bless the death of no-one...and who understand or are open-minded to learn about what life really is like for some people..and the emotioins and pain and joy that they feel ....check out this great movie.
Thank you John Singleton for brightening a day in my life..the day that I chose to rent this movie. Thank you for your honesty in portraying what life is like.
Peace-
