There's nothing wrong with Randall Kleiser's Big Top Pee-Wee that Pee-Wee's Big Adventure director Tim Burton wouldn't be able to fix. Take the scene in which entwined farmer and botanist Pee-Wee and ravishing circus performer Gina (Valeria Golina) blissfully ponder the shapes of the clouds. One can only imagine the wondrous forms Burton would have animated in the heavens. In Kleiser's sequel, they are mere cumulus. A talking pig and a sympathetic gallery of outcast circus performers (including a young Benicio Del Toro as the Dog-Faced Boy) notwithstanding, Big Top squanders much of the first film's magic and goodwill. Blame it on the script, which places arrested adolescent Pee-Wee in a small town that is unaccountably hostile to him. Blame it on Paul Rubens, who, perhaps rebelling against his own iconic creation, puts Pee-Wee in some disquieting libido-fueled situations, such as jumping his schoolteacher girlfriend Winnie (Penelope Ann Miller). "The children," Winnie fights him off as her class looks on. Indeed. --Donald Liebenson

4 out of 5 stars Not as bad as you remember . . . .......2007-09-08

Nearly everyone gives this follow up to Big Adventure negative reviews; however, if Big Adventure had never been made, this film would have been a much larger success and certainly a fondly remembered movie. Though not as ground-breaking and consistently funny as Pee Wee's first film, this rather slight tale about a farm, a circus, and a tree that grows cocktail weinies has several notable charms, including great sideshow ambience and several bits of Pee Wee weirdness that will appear to adult fans. Basically, if you love Pee Wee, there's practically no way you can dislike this film.

2 out of 5 stars pee wee's first major dissapointment.......2007-05-31

paul reubens character was one of the greatest comedic events of our time.. From the early variety show, to the playhouse, to the big adventure - pee wee could not lose.. I remember seeing big top pee wee in the theatre - and feeling very dissapointed with a movie that was just not very fun or interesting.. Whereas 'pee wee's big adventure' explored more of pee wees quirkiness (remember the scene with the tape in the bathroom) 'big top pee wee' tried to take the character move him to a different setting and make a sort of romantic comedy.. This is probably where it all falls apart.. pee wee should not be a romantic figure - he is the opposite.. he is best when he remains a sort of neuter or man child.. the second romance enters the picture.. pee wee loses all of his charm and comedy.. there are a few funny moments in big top pee wee but on the whole it falls flat.

5 out of 5 stars Pee Wee is the best.......2007-03-27

I love Pee Wee my kids love Pee Wee and if you don't know who he is you need to get this movie. I wish P.W. would make more!

It was great to be able to surprise my husband with his all time favourite movie from when he was a kid. The movies were in great condition except for the fact that we had to recopy them because it wouldnt play on our dvd player or psp! It was dissapointing and annoying and i had wandered about this when purchasing but couldnt find anything mentioned about 'universal playing' on the amazon site. I've learnt my lesson and wont be buying from amazon again.

4 out of 5 stars Decent Sequel.......2007-01-16

Okay so it isn't as innocent and charming as Pee-Wee's Big Adventure but Big Top still has a place in my heart. The movie isn't really a sequel, it has none of the same characters as Big Adventure just Pee-Wee living the life of a farmer in a small town. The story depicts Pee-Wee as the town idiot in the eyes of all the other elderly citizens. With the help of a hot dog tree the story plays out and is sure to leave a smile on your face. May I also say the scene of Pee-Wee and Gina and the depiction of their actions with (fireworks, mud wrestling, and a train) may be one of the finest scenes of cinematogrophy ever* please do not watch this movie expecting the charm of Big Adventure, if you like Pee-Wee and a good comedy this may be worth a peek.

3 out of 5 stars "He's ...uh . . .gone Blank, ma'am.".......2006-03-31

When watching this movie you have to get rid of all your brain cells for the moment and prepare yourself for a goofy ride through a geek's fantasy of becoming a superhero.

Kevin is the one brother who is heavily into reality with his job at HARD EDITION, a low-level journalist news station that makes up the news as it goes along.

Darryal, on the other hand, has not grown up at all and although he is brilliant in his own way he still has wild-eyed dreams of constantly inventing helpful things. Sadly, all of his inventions are either too good to be true or simply aren't interesting to the public eye. One day, (as in many superhero stories.) a subtle accident at his workplace involving a fly catcher that can fly around the room crashes a combination of chemicals onto darryal's lab coat. This makes the coat and anything that is mixed with the checmical impervious to bullets and knives.

True, there are many flaws with this picture. The story is somewhat tongue and cheek and there are some moments where the humor is corny and overdone but damon wayans plays such a believable geek that it is absoluetly hard not to enjoy watching him struggle to become a bumbling superhero of the streets.

Some of this movie pays homage to the 1960's version of batman and robin. There is also one scene where they mimic the arrival of a villian via an explosion underground which is a nod, or you may think of it as ripp off, to BATMAN RETURNS.

The one thing that I liked about this movie was that DAVID ALAN GRIER plays the perfect straight man to DAMON WAYANS' goofy persona.

The Adventures of BLANKMAN and THAT OTHER GUY is what this movie should have been called. But, all in all, the movie is not groundbreakingly good but it is not that bad. Give it a look.

Enjoy!

2 out of 5 stars They Were Onto Something..........2005-08-11

This is definitely one of the strangest superhero movies I've ever seen. Daryl (Damon Wayans) and Kevin (David Alan Grier) are two brothers who grew up on watching "Batman"...and nothing else is explored with that opening scene.

Kevin has grown up to be an writer for one crazed editor. Daryl, on the other hand, is an inventor who, of course, has dozens of ridiculous gadgets that will somehow pay off...or will they? Yes, his tools are creative, but they serve no purpose other than comic relief, which I didn't find funny except for Daryl's embarassment.

Sadly, the two brothers' grandmother is killed because she works for a City Mayor nominee who ticked off a cliched mobster (Jon Polito). Daryl swears revenge by dressing up in a ridiculous costume and using those odd gadgets to fight crime and build a secret hideout (which I'm surprised nobody finds since it's at the end of a train track).

Let me make this clear - there are some hysterical moments in this movie. The bickering between straight-laced Kevin and wannabe idealist Daryl is side-splitting. In fact, just about every scene with these two is very funny. The problem with this movie is that it has such a dark, dramatic tone in some scenes that just doesn't fit. For example, Blankman takes a reporter (Robin Givens, who's basically a black version of Lois Lane - that's not a racial slur) to this hideout, but there is some music that reminds me of a despressed version of Danny Elfman's score of "Edward Scissorhands," and some comedic actors trying to be serious about the world and love. That scene is absolutely disastrous.

There's another scene when the Mayor is going to publicly open a bank and asks Blankman to be present for the dedication. But then Polito's mobster and several thugs chain him up and set off a time-bomb that kills the Mayor, and possibly other people. THIS IS NOT FUNNY! The movie is not trying to have a dark sense of humor at all, but instead goes for laughs that seem like they belong in "Don't Be A Menace In South Central..."

The contrast of tones and themes don't work. Another case in point, Blankman fights crime on his first night out and confronts a pimp slapping a woman around, but then Blankman's genius idea is "Slap me around and call me Susan!" The scene is funny, if improbable...but seeing a woman slapped around and turned into comedic violence feels wrong to me.

Maybe I'm taking this movie too seriously, but when I see some jabs at classic superheroism that make me laugh uncontrollably (Daryl's inability to face life seriously instead of as a TV show is priceless), and then see some drama that is not only misplaced, but also horribly filmed and acted, then the potential hides itself underneath a movie that's trying to be a superhero comedy "PLUS" an urban drama "PLUS" a hip-hop flick.

This movie has a serious case of split-personality with no hope of control. I really want to like this movie, but it strikes so many wrong notes that I can't quite recommend it.

5 out of 5 stars Piece of crap.......2005-07-14

Everone says this movie is very violent and funny but it is the least violent and funny movie I have ever seen.

5 out of 5 stars Blankman.......2005-01-09

BlankMan is a laugh out loud riot for the entire family to enjoy. The film is about a nerdy African American, Daryl Walker, living in the New York area, suffers a tremendous tragedy when his grandmother is killed by a corrupt mafia leader; Michael Spinelli. Since then, inspired by the old Adam West T.V. show Batman series, Daryl dons the disquise of Blankman to fight crime to avenge her death. If you can imagine Steve Urkell from Family Matters pretending to be Batman, then you should have a good idea on who BlankMan is. The movie is simply hysterical and makes fun of all the typical super hero movie cliches. I loved how they used the old fighting sequences from the old Batman T.V. series to make fun of this genre. The movie will have you laughing histarically throughout the film with great scenes like when BlankMan confronts Spinelli or when David Allan Grier is talking to his crotch. Overall, this is a great comedy for the entire family.

5 out of 5 stars Moving and Beautiful.......2007-03-14

"Tim"
I will start by saying that this is very much a woman's movie.
First you have a young gorgeous Mel Gibson running around shirtless and in hot pants throughout the film.
And it's a love story that involves a simple minded man "Gibson" some think retarded that falls in love with a much older woman named Mary beautifully played by Piper Laurie.
Tim "Gibson's character" starts to do odd jobs for Mary and he starts to have feelings that are foreign and confusing to him.
Meanwhile Mary is feeling the same way about him but because of the age difference and his simple mindedness she think it taboo to love him.
What follows is a beautiful and almost fantasy like love story that will melt your heart and make you wish you yourself could find a "Tim".

4 out of 5 stars A DIFFERENT KIND OF LOVE STORY..........2005-08-29

This is a gem of a film, starring the underrated Piper Laurie in the role of Mary Horton, a well-to-do, but lonely, business woman, who befriends Tim Melville, a very nice, good looking day laborer, earnestly played by a very young Mel Gibson. Tim happens to be a little simple. His family describes him as being "a few short of a full quid".

While he does work around her house, Mary gets to know Tim, as well as his working class family. As time goes on, a deep fondness that ripens into love develops between the two. He brings her out of her shell, and she teaches him to read and explains concepts that will enable him to function better in the world around him. Based upon Colleen McCollough's book of the same name, this is a very well acted-film, with fine performances by the supporting cast, as well as the leads.

The quality of the DVD, however, is bargain basement with no additional features. Moreover, the DVD picture is best described as grainy. This is unfortunate for such an excellent film. A better transfer from print to DVD should have been executed, as this film certainly merits it, as does the viewer.

4 out of 5 stars an unknown gem.......2004-05-07

I have owned Tim for many years in VHS. I found it by accident and have never regretted following my impulse to buy it out of a bargin bin. It is not the best sound quality but the story is a heart catcher. In short, because I don't want to blow the movie, Tim is a "slow" young man whose parents are getting older and worry about his future. While working at a gardening job, Tim meets a woman who takes an interest in him. From there I leave it to the movie. It was filmed in Australia and I think anyone who likes Mel Gibson should see this movie. It really shows you a side of the actor that just isn't seen anymore. The part is played wonderfully and I promise those who cry at movies you will cry at least once with this one. The reason I gave it a four rating is because of the sound quality. I don't know if it has been improved in the DVD version, but I will soon find out. Give this movie a chance and I promise you won't regret it.

Ray Liotta stars as a talented medical intern whose life is stalled due to his devotion to a sweet-natured but retarded twin brother (Tom Hulce). This touching film by Robert M. Young (The Ballad of Gregorio Cortez) may sound like a dreary, made-for-television potboiler, but it is full of interesting moments as Hulce's character--a garbage collector--follows his curiosity about the world and his sibling's new girlfriend (Jamie Lee Curtis). Young really works the bond between the two men: at one point he takes an overhead shot of the brothers showering, and it resembles what they must have looked like together as babies sharing the same womb. Hulce and Liotta are great together; it is easy to believe in every emotion they share. --Tom Keogh

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Italians without gangsters. .......2007-08-16

The previous reviewers are all right: this is a soul wrenching, tear jerking, should-have-won-an-Oscar movie. It is a beautiful story of two brothers, and the love and secret pain of the past that they share. Hulce's acting is supurb, and both Liotta and Curtis are impressive. Dominik and Eugene is also refreshing as a story of Italian American characters with no gangsters in sight. Martin Scorsese could not have done this one. A must-own movie that also makes a wonderful gift.

5 out of 5 stars Great Acting by All Involved.......2006-09-05

This is a heart warming tear jerker, and not just because of the two great main characters. Todd Graff is great as Nicky's garbage collector partner, and this was the first movie in which I saw David Straithairn, who has gone on to be one of the best and most underrated actors ever. I believe the young boy who plays his son might be Edward Furlong, of "The Terminator" fame. Not sure on that, though. At any rate, the whole story is great and so well acted. I'm buying the DVD so I can watch it any time I want.

5 out of 5 stars Tom Hulce's lovably, heartwarming performance.......2005-01-16

Once again Tom Hulce extends his superior talent toward a character who is not only believably real, but who exemplifies the goodness and innocence that lies inside of all human beings. Tom Hulce became my favorite actor after I saw his comical, yet vulnerably inclined performance in Amadeus. It's unfortunate that he has not been recognized for his list of powerful performances with anything but Golden Globe and Academy Award nominations. His ability to take on extremely memorable and complex characters as well as the emotions he imparts through facial expressions is invaluable in an actor and it is one of the features that make Tom Hulce the extraordinary actor he is. He truly embodies the innocence and goodness in Dominick ("Nicky")Luciano. Through Dominick, Hulce instills the importance of the human spirit, emotions, and ties that everyday people are bound to and makes his audience want to search for the uniqueness in every individual.

5 out of 5 stars Loved it.......2004-04-04

I just saw this movie like last night. It was on one of the movie channels, encore. Wow, this has to be either my second or third favorite movie (Rain Man being the first then Stand by Me). First of all, I'm 13 years old, and I love like all old movies from the 70s and 80s. Anyway, this is about two brothers, Dominick who's brain damaged, and Eugene who's studying to become a surgeon. It's such a great movie, and it will make you laugh and cry. I recammend this to young and old alike.

4 out of 5 stars A Heartfelt Tear Jerker with Terrific Performances.......2001-11-17

WOW. If you've never seen this movie, grab a hankie, or a box of them, and be prepared to be touched through your soul. Ray Liotta proves why he is one of our generation's best actors, while Tom Hulce impresses in a way he hasn't done since "Amadeus." I'm one of those folks who absolutely hated the heart string pulls of "Terms of Endearment" which I found manipulative in a not-so-good-way. This flick, in comparison, never works against the viewer, by making us choose a "bad guy" or be antagonistic towards the victim. Therein lies its beauty - this tale of two brothers refuses to victimize either one of them and is therefore startling in its effectiveness. Critics panned the flick during an era where grown men could not cry and get away with it. Today, the message is just as powerful, only men CAN cry without being labeled as anything less than men. This story of two men whose lives are eternally tied together despite their own challenges, hopes and dreams, is a valentine to brotherhood, fraternity and family. In these times of war, "Dominick and Eugene" reminds us what it means to be a family. A wonderful movie you will treasure forever. Just keep the hankies on hand since you're bound to use them.

4 out of 5 stars Really good, but sometimes slow and hard to watch........2007-02-16

I love Sam Shepard, so I'll see or read just about anything he's done. This one's a little hard to watch, though, partly because of pace, partly because of a slight bit of over-dramatizing from actors and director, and partly because of subject matter. Despite all this, it's still worth watching.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent 20 years ago, still excellent........2005-06-12

Eighteen, 19, 20 years ago, I first saw this film. I loved it, my teenaged kids loved it. I had no idea Sam Shepard had written the play, or even that there was a play, though it seems obvious now. We watched this over and over. I still play the sound track, sung, I found out somewhere recently, by Sam's sister, Sandy Rogers--talk about alternative country! I still watch this film from time to time. It's enchanting, it's funny, it's mysterious, and there's that kick-ass soundtrack. It never gets old for me.

2 out of 5 stars Lots of heat, but no fire.......2005-03-13

This is Sam Sheppard's (he wrote and stars in it) incestuous love story, told at a fever pitch. Eddie (Sheppard) and May (Kim Basinger) have been lovers since high school; only later do they find out they have the same father. Their relationship becomes one of frustration and rage as they dance around each other in a seedy motel somewhere in the West, yelling and socking each other over a passion that cannot be. It goes on too long and the flashbacks that reveal the root of the problem come too late and too fleetingly. The principles do their drag-'em out best, but in the end it's much ado about very little. The movie is not very entertaining or enlightening, and it has a strong egocentric feeling about it for Sheppard. Randy Quaid also appears.

5 out of 5 stars A great Robert Altman ý Sam Shepard collaboration.......2004-05-24

The first perceptions one has of a work of art likely set one's standard by which that work is subsequently judged in comparison with its presentation in another medium. For example if the work is first encountered as a stage-play, then that form becomes the defacto standard for later comparisons, and a subsequent film of that work will likely never achieve one's preconceived expectations. This reviewer first encountered "Fool for Love" in a local theatre in 1985, never having seen the original play.

Readers who are fans of Tennessee Williams' PBS/Showtime 1984 TV version of "Cat On a Hot Tin Roof" with Jessica Lange and Tommy Lee Jones (forget the worthless and sickeningly bowdlerized 1958 Taylor-Newman version, a perfect example of how rampant, uncontrolled religious censorship runs amok and destroys a work of art); or fans of Eugene O'Neill's 1960 "The Iceman Cometh (the Broadway Archive version with Jason Robards); will find this film fits neatly within that pantheon. With this work, Sam Shepard's genius rightly assumes co-equal rank with that of both Williams and O'Neill.

But there is a difference between this film and that of the two outstanding films cited above. This work is NOT just the filming of a great stage-play inside some cheesy New Mexico motel room. Director Altman actually had the complete, rundown "El Royale" motel-cabin, restaurant-bar and junkyard complex built to his specifications outside Sante Fe, where a 360 degree camera sweep would reveal nothing else beyond the complex but the isolated, lonely mountainous and grassy scrubland just off the interstate. The set is complete with flickering burned-out neon; abandoned vehicles; curtain-covered "kitchenette", tiny bath lavatory, medicine cabinet and stool in every cabin; and urine-God-only-knows-what-else stained mattresses (with bed vibrators); a way-station for desperate travelers going elsewhere. Director Altman reports in the documentary that the film set construction was so realistic, travelers passing on the interstate would actually stop and try to book accommodations or eat in the "restaurant."

Character interactions are complex and intense, at times funny yet simultaneously deadly serious, loaded with crackling, sizzling dialog and byplay which run tempestuously hot and cold. While these behaviors seem initially inexplicable, they are driven by past events, which growing intimations and clarifications gradually unveil. The present day portrayals are freely intermixed with metaphors and ghostly influences from that past. The shocking realities of that past are shown in flashback with all the contradictions and lies of convenience that creep into such re-telling. The way these elements are brought seamlessly together make this a film of such depth that it screams out for multiple viewings to appreciate its full merits.

Because of the vitality and completeness down to every last detail; a large background cast of other people including bit-parts and stand-ins for principal actors when they were younger; horses and cattle galore; functioning beat-up cars, trucks with dirty windshields and horse-trailers; and characters' past flashbacks filmed in a variety of supporting locales; this production never once assumes the aura of its stage-play origins. No matter how much one touts the supremacy of the original play, one would have to concede that there are elements of this joint Altman-Shepard recreation of Shepard's original that would simply be impossible to realize on the stage.

Sam Shepard's screenplay is perfectly realized. Robert Altman's direction of the story, the actors, and the background settings is nothing short of masterful. The cast is uniformly superb. Pierre Mignot's beautifully clear and largely night-time color cinematography and George Burt's musical assemblage blend it all together into an unforgettable masterpiece of cinematic art.

A fascinating 20 minute making-of documentary by Robert Altman (refreshingly low-key in comparison to the usual rampant narcissism displayed in too many such documentaries) is included, along with the original theatrical trailer. The DVD's 1.85:1 original theatrical aspect ratio picture quality is excellent. Sound is fine, though stereo surround effects are muted or non-existent, not a problem as such effects could make no contribution. Like Williams and O'Neill, Shepard has created a highly cerebral film. Those who are teen-age action-adventure addicts need not waste their time on this pre-eminently adult fare

4 out of 5 stars Same old Shepard galvanized by master artisan.......2004-02-14

Shepard loves incest, family abuse, cowboys and rambling loose dialogue. And that seems to be all he knows. For all of his artistic integrity his plays have always felt a little on the nose and a little juvenile (his films even worse!). Altman's multiplicity of points of view, suppressed narration and mass-media-esque techniques give wonderful life to a play that is hardly worth the attention.

Description

Rosanna Arquette (Pulp Fiction) and Eric Roberts (Final Analysis) generate all kinds of crazy chemistry in this wildly offbeat tale of romance and redemption. From the Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright of Crimes of the Heart, Nobody's Fool is full of "lovable eccentricity" (Screen International) and "oddball charm" (Boxoffice)! Small-town girl Cassie (Arquette) has made a few big mistakes in love including an attempted stabbing! Labeled a kook by some, and largely avoided by all, Cassie wallows in shame and self-pity until a traveling Shakespearean troupe arrives and she falls for a hot backstage roadie (Roberts). Can she trust this stranger offering romance and a one-way ticket out of town? Or will she find that, in the words of the Bard, "the course of true love never did run smooth"?

5 out of 5 stars Outstanding !.......2007-08-24

Outstanding screenplay, direction, acting, and musical score. I have watched this film several times, it is an amazing feel good romantic drama/comedy (more drama than comedy, but very quirky and funny in many spots). Rosanna Arquette shines in this film as our hero seeking love, and escape from her small hometown, perhaps more importantly her character seeks to find her inner self. I wish they would have released a soundtrack CD for this film, or perhaps now they could at least distribute it as download as digital music (hoping). I give this film five stars as a romance drama-comedy, but of course it is drama, and independent film, so do not expect huge budget special effects. The film is shot in the New Mexico/Arizona region, with some nice backdrops. Note: The Amazon description of the DVD here says it is 1.33:1 (4:3 TV mode), but I already purchased two copies and the DVD includes both 1.33:1 as well as widescreen mode (which I have viewed off the DVD).

5 out of 5 stars Favorite Movie of all times.......2003-10-11

This movie needs to come out on DVD.... Does anyone know WHEN it might?

4 out of 5 stars Sweet, offbeat romance.......2002-02-25

I saw this film when it ran in NYC in 1986, and like the rest of the audience (who applauded when it was over), was totally charmed by it. I could never understand why it didn't do better at the box office - poor marketing, perhaps? I understand it's done very well as a video.

The performances and the originality of the script are what stand out in this film. Rosanna Arquette manages to be funny and heartbreaking at the same time. Eric Roberts is so damned sexy and appealing in this film, it's hard to understand why he didn't get more romantic leads. When Arquette's character shouts at him, "Stop looking at me with those eyes!", every woman in the audience knows what she is talking about. He is magnetic, and gives great dimension to a somewhat underwritten part. The chemistry between these two is great. All of the supporting actors give first rate performances.

Some of the quirkiness of Beth Henley's script could have been whittled down - she seems to delight in presenting odd characters for effect, such as the albino bride, schizophrenic cousin and the obese younger brother, who don't add a lot to the story, but seem like contrived distractions. These elements might work in her plays, but only take away from the development of the main characters and their relationship to each other.

What she does get right is the complex relationship between love, obsession, humor and disaster. In Henley's world, tragedy exists right around the corner from happiness, and nothing is black and white.

It was interesting to read the comments from Dean, an actor in this film. It does seem like editing might have done this one in. I could have used more development of the Riley character, a little more humor, and less parading of oddballs.

But all in all, a worthwhile film for its performances and originality. It looks good too, with lovely shots of the outdoors, and attractive, appealing leads. All in all, one of the more memorable movies I've ever seen. Even if it stunk at the box office, those involved should be proud of it.

3 out of 5 stars Good characters in a modest movie.......2002-02-10

Rosanna Arquette and Eric Roberts, especially, are very good in this movie. Their budding relationship and the unfolding of their ambitions for the future, circumscribed by their clear limitations, weaknesses, and past histories, is interesting and worthwhile. Unfortunately I was distracted by what I felt were cheap laughs at the expense of many characters, including Arquette's ridiculous birthday-balloon costume, the incompetence at the acting workshops, and the characters at her workplace. While it was insightful that Arquette was vilified for actions that would be easy to forget in a big city, her family's nature would be enough to place her at the margins of society. Pretty good and worth seeing, too bad it wasn't better.

5 out of 5 stars Thanks for the nice reviews!.......2001-01-31

Hi, as one of the actors in this small film, I really appreciate the kind words about it. The screenplay by Beth Henley was very funny, infact, in it's original form, the script was a laugh riot. Somehow, either by cost cutting or by director and editing cuts the film was whittled down to a quirky romance, with a lot of the comedy missing. It's still a sweet and funny film. So buy it or rent it, but if you like quirky characters, you'll like this film. -Dean Ricca

5 out of 5 stars I really enjoyed this video.......1999-06-04

This is a wonderful performance by James Dean. It should be in every Dean fan's library. Parts of his performance are reminiscent of Chaplin's 'little tramp' character. This video really shows how talented JD was.

5 out of 5 stars the best of the television years available........1998-12-23

Im A fool is the best production for tv that Dean ever did. Though not the best quality it has a timeless story, eddie(green acres) Albert and a 16 year-old Natalie Wood. Deans performance Stands out for its truth and honesty.

From the start, the narrator always tried to find an easy way through life. Even though the narrator had good intentions by impressing the beautiful woman with lies about his vast wealth, the lies were the same reason that he lost her forever. Good story. END

All actors have to try a mental-impairment role at some point in their careers (don't they?), and Mel Gibson took his best shot with this sweet film about a young retarded man and his gentle relationship with an older woman (Piper Laurie) who teaches him to read and to adjust to the real world. Tim's parents come to trust the woman's honorable intentions, but the movie still gives Mel's female fans a lot to swoon over; it's a platonic romance with plenty of temptation that's never acted upon. Add to that the fact that Gibson's really quite good in the title role--after Mad Max, this was Mel's first widely seen opportunity to prove himself in a dramatic role before his higher-profile roles in The Road Warrior and Gallipoli. Tim is a bit too schmaltzy and sentimental, but this 1979 release has gained a loyal audience over the years, and the film has a lot more than just a young Mel Gibson to recommend it. --Jeff Shannon

4 out of 5 stars miami.......2004-01-24

Mel Gibson in one of his earliest movies (when he was about 25) plays a rather sweet (hey let's face it: hunky) and slightly retarded young gardener who likes his middle aged female employer played by Piper Laurie who really, really likes him, but in a rather restrained lustfulness: barging into his room at night all she does is gaze at him sleeping before stealing away.
His sister is appalled at this gender bending May -December romance (she wants to marry into a prominent local family and fears it might jeopardize her upcoming nuptials).
His employer (the middle aged woman) is so appalled she seeks pastoral counseling : young men older women romances were taboo 25 years ago! And she is racked with guilt. Surprisingly, her pastor is in favor so long as she marries Mel (lustfulness in marriage is ok!).
Also, Mel's parents are in favor: they are old and worried about who will care for their mentally retarded son after they die, so having him quietly married off would be best for their son.
There is a very charming scene of Mel and Laurie cavorting on the beach, tumbling down the dunes, she wearing a full body-covering caftan and big floppy hat, and he in the cutest of cut-off swim trunks looking as cute as a young and still inexperienced actor can manage.
It's embarrassing to watch at times , but my mother, aged 80+, really liked it.
So, more power to female audience oriented soft-core porn!

3 out of 5 stars Could you feel more awkward?.......2003-01-15

I enjoy watching Mel Gibson, even enough to watch this movie. I can appreciate how far he has come in his career. I just felt a little weird watching him as a "slow" boy working for, and eventually getting "involved" with an older woman. But, what can you say... it's Mel Gibson and hey, all actors started somewhere! : )

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful, Poignant.......2002-10-22

Having read the book, I can see why Gibson was chosen for the role. Tim is described as someone with features that would have inspired Praxiteles.-Classic and beautiful in Greek purportions. Despite the lack of blond hair that Colleen McCoullough ascribed her mentally diminished hero, Gibson gives him the vulnerabilty and nobility that McCoullogh describes. Piper Laurie is marvelous as Tim's employer, caretaker, and eventual love interest. The Australian landscape was gorgeous(it reminds me of Hawaii, where I lived as a child). But I was glad this film spares us the full descriptions of how Tim was treated by his co-workers. This is a very sensitive, well-thought piece, and I guess I can overlook many inconsistancies with the book and just enjoy the beauty of it.

4 out of 5 stars TIM IS TOPS..........2002-03-11

This is a gem of a film, starring the underrated Piper Laurie in the role of a well to do, but lonely, business woman, Mary Horton, who befriends a very nice, good looking day laborer, Tim Melville, earnestly played by a very young Mel Gibson. Tim happens to be a little simple. His family describes him as being "a few short of a full quid".

While he does work around her house, she gets to know him, as well as his working class family. As time goes on, a deep fondness that ripens into love develops between the two. He brings her out of her shell, and she teaches him to read and explains concepts that will enable him to function better in the world around him. Based upon Colleen McCollough's book of the same name, this is a very well acted film, with fine performances by the supporting cast, as well as the leads.

The quality of the DVD is bargain basement with no additional features. That is to be expected, as the price of this DVD is likewise bargain basement. One gets what one pays for. Moreover, the DVD picture is best described as grainy. This is unfortunate for such an excellent film. A better transfer from print to DVD should have been executed, as this film certainly merits it, as does the viewer.
