5 out of 5 stars Great gift for Parents!.......2007-02-19

My parents who grew up watching Ed Sullivan loved this as a Christmas gift!

2 out of 5 stars Made for the MTV crowd.......2007-02-13

I suspect the five-star reviews of this DVD were written by spammers working for the company that sells it.

These compendium DVDs are routinely made by stupid jackasses who figure our attention span is only 10 seconds (the MTVers) so there's no point in showing an entire performance. What we get here is Carol Burnett talking about Ed Sullivan and occasionally throwing out little snippets of the acts. We get only a few seconds of the comedians and novelty acts, though they sometimes provide a whole song, other times a fraction of the song. This format is so annoying I didn't much like the DVD.

5 out of 5 stars The really really big sheww.......2006-06-12

Watching Ed Sullivan on Sunday night was an American tradition. He came out with his squinchy little body and his upraised hands and told us all that it was going to be a 'really big really big sheww' . 'Let's hear it for Curtis Le May from SAC. He 's going to bomb the Commies into Smithereens' Down there in the front row say a big hello to one of the great champeens of all time. Let's hear it for Jack Dempsey'
Ed would begin that way introducing the celebrities and warming us for Toppo Gigio the Little Italian Mouse or for , a young man from Memphis , Tennessee ( Ed could hardly hide the distaste as he pronounced the words ) Elvis Presley. "
The video contains records of some of the highlight performances, and also an interview with Ed and his wife Sylvia.
Highlights are wonderful, but my sense is that putting together a package in which the complete shows as they came on at the time would give a dimension no excerpts can.

5 out of 5 stars Just a question on comedian Zoots Reed.......2005-12-26

I was looking for the show which had Zoots Reed on it?Thanks,Teddy

5 out of 5 stars An excellent collection of wonderful performances.......2005-02-11

The best thing about this DVD is that the performances shown appear in their entirety - not as excerpts! So many documentary collections just give you a portion of a performance. Also, the quality of the old films, especially the ones in color, is remarkable.

2 out of 5 stars more stupid film editing .......2007-03-27

When the songs of whales were given, there were times when music was played by musicians, and that shouldn't happen. If you are letting us hear a whale, then be silent.

5 out of 5 stars Great footage.......2006-12-07

My son has loved whales, dolphins, orcas, etc. since he was a toddler. I bought this video for him and it is so beautiful. The narration is fairly simple with interesting facts that are not too scientific. This video continually shows animal footage without interviews, etc. that are common in more traditional "documentaries," which is great for kids. There is a lot of underwater footage which I haven't always found in whale videos. I only wish I could watch it in an IMAX theater.

3 out of 5 stars Made for the huge IMAX screen, not your DVD player.......2006-07-15

Seen on a small screen, this video will entertain you for a half hour, and then start to lose you. I can just imagine how much more involving it would be on a huge IMAX screen. It is just over 40 minutes long, so you will be bored for about 10 minutes.

When plankton and krill are being discussed, I really wanted to see one. Couldn't they show us what a krill looks like? When the songs of whales were given, there were times when music was played by musicians, and that shouldn't happen. If you are letting us hear a whale, then be silent.

One of the whale songs sounds a lot like I'm So Lonesome I Could Cry.

I wish they didn't hire Captain Jean Luc Picard to do the narration. That is distracting. I know what they're going for. They are going for the status of having a famous actor in their video. But the subject is whales. The subject is not famous actors. Focus on the whales. If that isn't enough of a show for you, don't make the video.

And don't hire one of these perfect speech, perfect pronunciation people either, people who don't dentalize their T's and who pronounce every word perfectly. That is very annoying. I don't want to hear someone who speaks beautifully. That's nonsense. I want someone who communicates. IMAX tends to hire speakers who are much too polished, who represent IMAX to the world, and that is extremely annoying and statusy. It is just way too effing proper. Just communicate, and stop being so damn proper. The story is the words, not the way they are spoken. This world is way too image-conscious. Hearing these perfect speakers is as annoying as seeing just how picture perfect every soap opera actor looks, or every model. Stuff it.

I can't say this is a great nature film. It isn't. It isn't creative or absorbing enough. It's okay.

4 out of 5 stars Suitable ocean scenes........2004-07-07

This film on whales, originally shown in Imax, has excellent footage on whales and chronicles of their annual migration. It is narrated by an actor who starred in many films.
There are a suitable number of underwater scenes to make this an all around good presentation, but don't expect footage in quantity to equal it to "The Blue Planet", or "Secrets of the Ocean Realm" films. There are underwater clips to marvel at here. One of these is when the camera swims over a rocky ground, which contains killer whale skeletons. The best ocean scene of all. However, it is an excellent comparison and an essential film to own.
The VHS film quality is fine. The digital transfer is all right, nothing significant. The music looks good, playing as if recorded immediately after the Imax premiere. Your best buy, however, would be the newly mastered DVD.

4 out of 5 stars Whale of a Tale.......2003-02-27

Great family show! We saw this movie as an IMAX (Virginia Beach Marine Science Museum) film with our 3 & 5 year old boys. Now they love whales. Especially my 5 year old. He keeps amazing me with the facts that he remembers from the film. Breathtaking footage, especially the humpbacks feeding. This is a movie I won't mind watching again and again.

A string of insurmountable gaps in logic keeps this science fiction/thriller hybrid from director John Dahl (Joy Ride, The Last Seduction) from fully developing its intriguing premise. Ray Liotta stars as a medical examiner who is obsessed with finding his wife's killer. A possible solution is found in neurobiologist Linda Fiorentino's experimental serum, which transfers memories from one person to another--even from the deceased. Liotta injects himself with the serum, which allows him harrowing glimpses into other people's minds. But while each dose brings him closer to identifying the killer, it also puts him one step nearer to death. Dahl keeps the film moving briskly and wraps it in noirish photography, but he's let down by Bill Geddie's script, which asks viewers to swallow some implausible notions (the instantaneous success of the experimental serum, for one). --Paul Gaita

When local researcher Martha Briggs (Linda Fiorentino, The Last Seduction, Jade) unveils an experimental drug that allows the user to relive the memories of another person, living or dead, Krane sees his chance. Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Forgettable movie....unforgettable plot.......2005-10-11

I noticed right off the bat that only 7 people reviewed this movie one Amazon. Wow. While this movie has its share of flaws and the ending is a little weak, it still was a fun ride for me. Out of the many thrillers out there, this isn't in the top bunch to see at all but it definitely is up there for originality. Now, I'm not going to get into if it was realistic or not because I don't even know but as for the movie, it's a good thriller worth a rent.
The movie's about a doctor whose wife is murdered. Following this event, he is suspected of murder, relieved of his charges, loses his children to his step sister but that's not even the worst...the killer isn't found. This doctor is very troubled by this until he meets a promissing doctor working on a drug that could allow one to use the blood of a dead individual to see what they saw. Guess what. He uses it to see what his wife saw and figure out who killed his wife.
The movie does has some problems but is a good rental and the flashback scenes are well made. Ray Liotta does a nice job in leading a weak cast somehow to success.

5 out of 5 stars MEMORABLE.......2004-04-25

Once you get past the implausibility of the plot (mainly that the drug culled from Cerebral spinal fluid could do what occurs in this movie), you have a nervewrackingly good thriller. Ray Liotta, one of our most underappreciated actors, stars as a medical examiner who was cleared of murdering his wife by a technicality. In investigating a horrifying killing spree at a pharmacy, Ray thinks the killer is the same one who murdered his wife. He goes out on a date and meets Linda Fiorentino (quite good in a laconic way), who has developed a serum which allows memory transfer between rats. But, it is dangerous, and has not been tried on humans. Liotta is so empassioned with finding his wife's murderer, he steals the drug and uses it, and it does work, but without damage to his heart. From heron, Liotta finds out that Kim Coates (as a seedy drug dealer) is the one who did the pharmacy killing, and in flashbacks, he sees Coates attacking his wife. But, is he the true culprit? Many surprising plot twists evolve, and it is a great film. Featured are Peter Coyote, as Liotta's friend, a police detective; "Sex and the City's" Kim Cattrall has a small role as Liotta's sister in law who has custody of his girls; David Paymer plays Liotta's friend and partner; and Christopher McDonald is a seedy, sleazy cop who thinks Liotta did kill the wife.
John Dahl directs with assuredness and the rainy Seattle setting is perfect.
An unknown gem.

5 out of 5 stars FIRST RATE THRILLER.......2002-06-08

John Dahl should smash the box-office one of these days because he truely deserves it. Unforgettable is his best work effort, a gripping suspensefiul script supported by an excellent cast and a director who knows how to keep you on the edge of your sofa. The Dolby Digital track is very dynamic and does justice to Christopher Young's remarkable score. This widescreen edition is not anamorphic, as marked on the back cover, but the image is sharp.

5 out of 5 stars It's finally on DVD!.......2002-05-18

I've been waiting for this movie to come out on DVD since I first got a DVD player about three years ago. Ray Liotta gives an excellent performance as a man falsely accused of murder trying to find his wife's killer. The plot is very interesting and original and presented so that it is believable and intense. Definitely a must-have.

Lordy lordy, there is some serious testifying going on here. What's more, the titles ("Let Us Worship Him," "Just a Prayer Away," "The Battle Is the Lord's"), the setting (a Washington, D.C. church), and the febrile audience response leave no doubt that Yolanda Adams is a gospel singer. But this two-hour program (including interviews that can be viewed separately) has a decidedly contemporary feel. The music has the sound of commercial R&B or smooth jazz; the influence of artists like Stevie Wonder and Donny Hathaway is readily apparent; there are costume changes and a light show; there's even a video (for "Gotta Have Love") that can only be described as hip-hop. That's not to say that Adams plans to go the route traveled by Aretha Franklin, Whitney Houston, and others who made the transition from the pew to the pop charts. But one thing is certain: this ain't your grandmother's church music. Glory hallelujah! --Sam Graham

2 out of 5 stars LONGING FOR A PROPER DVD.......2006-04-05

I previewed this DVD at a music shop and I was disappointed with what I saw. I love Yolanda's "The battle's is the Lord's" and I have a couple of CD's by her, however I saw this DVD after I had purchased CC Winans "The Throne Room" DVD and Kirk Whalum's "Gospel according to Jazz Chapter II" DVD, and I was appalled by the poor quality of Yolanda's offering. That small stage, so cramped! Mostly she stands in one spot. The lighting is poor. It's impossible to see other musicians on stage. Those antiqueted boxes for the different sections? Yolanda obviously still owes her fans a DVD. The song selection is okay though.

2 out of 5 stars Poor Quality recording and sound selection.......2006-03-20

Not to impressed with t5he video quality and song selection here, seems to do a great talent an injustice

3 out of 5 stars Yolanda Adams - Live in Concert.......2005-10-03

Great singing and praising, but somehow disappointed at the content and the way the DVD has been put together. I compared this DVD with Bebe Winans and the package that he delivered is of a better qaulity.

3 out of 5 stars Truly Unforgettable Performances - But Most Are Edited..........2006-01-25

I also own "Ed Sullivan - The Best of Broadway Musicals", which is a collection of about 11 full and complete performances. When I purchased this DVD collection, I had hope it too would include many full performances, but most appear to be edited.

Some highlights from this DVD: Jimmy Durante "Young at Heart" (50 Seconds); Louis Armstrong "Won't You Come Home Bill Bailey" (1 Min 10 Sec); Ella Fitzgerald with Sammy Davis Jr " 'S Wonderful" (Over 2 Mins); The Beatles "Ticket to Ride" (1 Min 30 Sec); The Beach Boys "Good Vibrations" (Less then 1 Min); Julie Andrews "I Could Have Danced All Night" (1 Min 30 Sec); The Doors "Light My Fire" (About 2 Min); and an Excellent Collection of Clips (Each About 1 Min) featuring The Four Tops, Smokey Robinson, The Supremes, Stevie Wonder and The Jackson Five.

This is indeed a memorable collection and is nicely hosted by Carol Burnett. The DVD menu does not offer direct access to the individual performances.

This version, the "Collector's Edition" runs about 80 minutes. An almost exact version with the same title noted as "Volume 1" runs about 98 minutes. I own the VHS version of that, and it also includes a rare comedy sketch with Lucille Ball and Desi Arnaz - this edition does not. Obviously this DVD contains less footage then the original.

All in all, the performances get a 5; however Sofa & Ventura Entertainment each get a 1 for their poor packaging and description. I consider this a dupe of the original Volume 1 issue, with LESS programming. Exactly what is collectible about it? Nothing I am aware of.

Description

This 18-song set from Nat "King" Cole is visual tribute to one of the most elegant trailblazers in history. Born on St. Patrick's Day 1919, Nathaniel Adams Coles took to the piano at an early ago and formed his own group while in his teens.

Nat put a royal sobriquet in the middle, dropped the 's' from his last name and truly became "King." He was the most successful Black recording artist of his time, selling over 50 million records by 1950.

His smooth, sensuous vocals bridged America's changing tastes from pre- World War II to a post-war world in a hurry. Nat "King" Cole became the first African-American to host a national tv show in 1955 setting standards for all who followed. He remains a musical treasure more than half a century after his death.

Songs Include: • Route 66 • Sweet Lorraine • Calypso Blues • Nature Boy • Opus One • Autumn Leaves • Shine On Harvest Moon • Got A Penny Benny • Little Girl • Mona Lisa • Save The Bones For Henry Jones • When I Fall In Love • So Long My Love • Tenderly • Stompin' At The Savoy • Straighten Up And Fly Right • Je Vous Aime Beaucoup • Nat's Song

One of the most beloved vocalists of all time, Nat King Cole paved the way for all African-American entertainers that came after him --- His grand musical legacy is celebrated with this 18-song visual tribute that includes "Route 66," "Mona Lisa," "Stompin' at the Savoy," "Straighten up and Fly Right," "Nat's Song" performed by actor Obba Babatunde

On November 5, 1956, The Nat King Cole Show debuted on NBC-TV ... Initially begun as a 15 minute show on Monday night, the show was expanded to a half hour in July 1957 ... Nat's guest were Ella Fitzgerald and Harry Belafonte and many other close friends in the entertaiment field ... The Nat King Cole Show had a short run due to the lack of national sponsorship, companies such as Rheingold Beer assumed regional sponsorship of the show, but a national sponsor never appeared ... to bad this show had star quality, in the name of Nat King Cole.

The last episode of The Nat King Cole Show aired December 17, 1957 --- Cole had survived for over a year, and it was he, not NBC, who ultimately decided to pull the plug on the show --- NBC and Nat had been operating at an extreme financial loss due to the lack of sponsorship his show received --- Cole quipped shortly after its demise, "Madison Avenue is afraid of the dark." --- once again enjoy those vintage performances just as they appeared decades ago in the small tube...meanwhile pick up your copy of "The Unforgettable Nat King Cole" from Amazon or Passport Video and relive those shows from Nat Cole the "King" of Jazz.

1 out of 5 stars Brazillian Bootleg ... Wait for the Real Thing.......2005-08-09

Although this Brazillian bootleg DVD was the only way one could watch "My Name Is Barbra", it is worth waiting for the official DVD of Streisand's first television special, which is due from Rhino Home Video in November 2005. An entire box set of Streisand's first five television specials (1965-1973) is due from Rhino. This Brazillian DVD looks like they simply transfered the Laser Disc of the 1986 home video release. Quality is not fantastic.

5 out of 5 stars The Way She Was.......2005-01-28

There seems to be a time in a performer's life when either the life/passion/drive leaves them or else they mature - or is it both...are they the same? After the mid 1970's Barbra Streisand left the world of Artist and became something else...something less vital and less driven by the blood that runs through her.
Thank god for video. If you want to see what all the hoopla was about - see this. This is her frist TV special and BOY is it special. It shows a young, passionate artist who had a voice, a style and a command for every nuance a song could have all rolled up into one awkward yet facinating Barbra. This is a wonderful mixture of comic kookiness, entertainer and pure artist at work. Barbra - please come back!

3 out of 5 stars Cute Movie.......2004-10-17

This is not a bad movie at all. It's a sugar coated little family movie that is suitable for all ages.
I do wish that a serious bigfoot movie would come out some day but in the mean time this little venture into the Sasquatch mythos is enough to keep the youngsters interested for 90 minutes.
Not quite as good as "Harry and the Hendersons" but it is a good effort and it entertains.
For the Bigfoot genre completist this is one to score, although this is no "Legend of Boggy Creek" or "Creature from Black Lake" it is a noteable notch in "Cinema Du Sasquatch" and worthy of a space on the shelf, perhaps next to "Snowbeast".
For the average consumer, it's probably better to rent it.

4 out of 5 stars Bigfoot - a truly "Unforgettable Encounter".......2004-08-07

This movie rocked my world. I thought there was NO WAY a film-maker could pull of a Bigfoot movie after seeing Harry and the Hendersons.

I admit. I was wrong.

Exciting footage of bigfoot actually fighting a bear and being chased by malicious, money-hungry hunters.

My only complaint is that they shouldn't have had Bigfoot mumble "Cody" (the name of the boy who helps save him) at the end. This took away from the realism.

Worth the money (I own it)!
