Before Stonewall is a documentary about evolution, namely the evolution of gay culture in the U.S. from the early 1920s to the Stonewall riot of 1969. Embellished with archival footage and photography from five decades, the film most prominently features the gay underground of the '20s and '30s, the rise of gay service in the military and workforce during WWII, the persecution of gays as "subversives" and "sexual perverts" in the state department by Senator McCarthy, the growth of the first grassroots political organizations for gay men and lesbians in the '50s, and of course, the civil rights movement. Commentary is provided by the gay men and lesbians who came of age in the years leading up to Stonewall.

Overall, Before Stonewall does an admirable job of illustrating the rise of American gay culture and pinpointing the various social and political issues that were most instrumental. Perhaps the film's only weakness lies in the vast ground it tries to cover in such a short amount of time, leaving certain themes without much in-depth coverage. However, as a snapshot of the years leading up to Stonewall, it succeeds remarkably well. --Katy Ankenman

4 out of 5 stars GLBT life before Stonewall.......2007-02-07

This documentary includes interviews with members of the GLBT community and their personal recollections of life from the 1920's to Stonewall. The inclusion of film clips, photos, and news items along with the personal recollections makes the history both interesting and personable. Too often we take our current freedoms for granted without appreciating those who fought to gain those rights. As a member of the GLBT community and a president of a PFLAG chapter I recommend this documentary along with the "After Stonewall" documentary.

"BEFORE STONEWALL: The Making of a Gay and Lesbian Community"

Our Stories, Our Lives

Amos Lassen and Cinema Pride

?Before Stonewall? (First Run Features) is an obligatory film?it is the story of gay and lesbians and how so much of what we have today was gained for us by a courageous few. In 1969, the New York police raided the Stonewall Inn, a famous gay bar in Greenwich Village, New York. This led to three days and three nights of rioting by the gay community of New York. And thus was born the gay liberation movement in America. It was then that the group of New York men and women said that they had had enough and were not going to take anymore. The closet door of America opened and out we poured?determined to fight for our right to meet and to begin the fight for equality.
In this amazing film, we get a look at the events leading up to that night at the Stonewall and we also see what really made it happen. Up until then we were the victims of horrible and terrifying treatment at the hands of the law enforcement agencies across this great country. This is the story, our story which is at times humorous and at other times revealing but most important?it is our story. The beginnings of the gay rights movement were at times glorious, at times depressing. and always emotional. We had finally decided that being third-class citizens was not for us. Sure, we all have heard of Stonewall but how many of us are aware of what happened before Stonewall. In this movie we have a decade by decade history of gay life in America through historical film footage and interviews with those who lived through the period. I tell so many of my younger friends that when they consider where we, the gay community, are today, to look back and see how it came to be and that those who fought for it are the true heroes.
I have seen this movie many times and it never ceases to amaze
me. The material that has been gleaned from the archives?film clips and photographs of gay life in America from 1900 to the 60s is enough alone to make this film a treasure, But add to that the interviews with those who were alive during pre-Stonewall and that makes this movie priceless. It is a must for everyone but especially for those who are interested in the field of gay studies and for anyone who is socially conscious.
It examines how gay people lived and supported each other in the days before the famous raids which were a catalyst for the gay rights movement. It features many brave individuals who risked life and limb back then by even broaching the subject of homosexuality.
If you consider yourself a member of a community, it is only right that you would want to know the history of that community. Here is an easy way to have a look at our history. It is fascinating, lively, funny, sad and above all intelligent. This is a movie that you owe it to yourself to see.

for anyone who wants to understand better the real history of the GBLT movement. Great presentation, easy to watch and informative. A tool for educating anyone willing to sit and watch it!

5 out of 5 stars Stunning Riveting Empowering Inspiring.......2006-02-03

The prior reviews on this movie hit most of the high points. The scene from Eisenhower's office during WWII is amazing - every time I see it I get goosebumps.

This movie does move quickly, but it really takes you from the days of hiding and shame to the revolution of Stonewall and beyond, to end on a note of triumph. It has been a while since I have been to a march, but every time I watch this movie, I am so moved, and proud of those who came before me. I am honored to be the recipient of the rewards of their struggle. I am inspired to live my best life as an openly gay man.

If you have ever felt second best, if you have ever ducked into the closet to make someone else more comfortable, if you have ever been ashamed of who you are as a gay person; this movie is for you.

I personally believe this movie should be required viewing for every gay person.

5 out of 5 stars Lest We Forget.............2005-12-30

Those of us who remember the closeted years before 1969, where the "love that dare not speak its name" remained silent, recognize the importance of documenting the hardships of gays and lesbians who lived in an era shrouded in secrecy and paranoia. This documentary does an adequate job of providing its viewers a brief glimpse into that era where there were no gay rights. I especially recommend this work to younger viewers who have little knowledge of what gay life was like before the Stonewall riots. In fact, dear reader, if you have never heard of the Stonewall riots, I implore you to purchase and view this documentary immediately!

I consider myself privileged to have personally known, and counted as a dear friend, one of the actors in this work -- George Buse. As stated by the Amazon reviewer, the only objection I have regarding this documentary is that it is too brief and only provides a "snapshot" into the lives of gay and lesbian Americans in times past. I spent many hours listening to George's plethora of anecdotes, and am sorry I never recorded them. When George passed in April of 2000 aged 75, his remarkable personal history, as well as his mental archives of that bygone era were taken with him, save for what he wrote in the Chicago gay press over the years, and his comments in this work. The producers of this documentary could not possibly have chosen a better historian or storyteller. Brief or not, the documentary is a worthwhile purchase. Five honored stars.

The companion film to Before Stonewall, After Stonewall, narrated by Melissa Etheridge, explores gay history in the U.S. from the 1970s through the 1990s. Like its predecessor, After Stonewall attempts to cover much ground in a short amount of time; however, with only three decades to span, the assignment is more manageable.

The film covers the predictable highs and lows of the last 30 years of the 20th century. On the side of triumph, it explores the declassification of homosexuality as a disease; the growth of gay presses and writers; gay wins in political office (notably Harvey Milk and Elaine Noble); and the formation of a national gay lobbying presence in the Human Rights Fund. On the flip side, we witness the antigay hysteria evoked by Anita Bryant; the rise of AIDS, the blind eye of the federal government; and the growth of the Christian Coalition. Perhaps the most significant contribution of this film is its mapping of a gay presence within popular media. Through TV shows such as South Park and covers of Newsweek and Time, as well as "out" popular performers like k.d. lang and Ellen DeGeneres, the case is made that gay culture has "arrived" in America--a huge leap from the days before Stonewall when the common idea of a gay person was someone to snicker at or otherwise dismiss as a lunatic. --Katy Ankenman

4 out of 5 stars Great summary of the start of the Gay Movement.......2007-02-07

This documentary includes interviews, film clips and key news items of the progression of the gay movement since Stonewall. As a member of the GLBT community and a PFLAG chapter president, I found the documentary very informative. I recommend this documentary as a follow-up to "Before Stonewall".

5 out of 5 stars if you buy before then you need after too..........2006-07-05

the perfect follow-up to 'The Making of a Gay and Lesbian Community: Before Stonewall' I've seen both along with another called 'Dangerous Living' - describing the situation in the developing world. These three DVD's are essential and entertaining tools for anyone wanting to help others understand the GBLT community around the world.

5 out of 5 stars The Struggle Continues..........2005-02-15

One night in June 1969, a group of people, tired of intolerance from the New York City police department, decided for once they weren't going to take it anymore, and give birth to the modern gay rights movement in the United States. Thirty five years later, it's amazing to see both how far we've come and how far we have yet to go.

After Stonewall depicts the struggle evolving from those empowering nights in New York City, and how it blossomed into a national movement. Long a mecca for the Bohemians of society, New york City is a natural birthplace for such a movement. Now, we see how that movement grew, through the times of trial of the AIDS epidemic, to the growth of the Religious Right and their ultimate intolerance.

This video does try to capture too much in too short of time, but the effect is quick and yet inspirational. It was amazing to listen to those people who were at ground zero of the AIDS epidemic, and the response of the community to it. The section of the AIDS quilt will immediately bring tears; it's poignant and heartbreaking. This documentary stops short of the millenium, but it manages to cover a wide-range of issues.

It's critical as a community that we embrace where we've come from. It seems as we traverse times of trial and tribulation, it's important to understand our roots. It's those roots, based in the stories that are in this movie, that ground us and help instill a sense a pride in where we've come from, and where we'll be going. With that pride comes strength, strength of will, strength of character. The people who so bravely walked before us, are our sources of self-empowerment.

Watch this move, learn, and live.

5 out of 5 stars An amazing review of contemporary, gay history........1999-07-11

Seeing where gays and lesbians have come from; the elated triumphs and horrible tragedies they endured, gives me an incredible appreciation for the rights I am beginning to enjoy. The sexual revolution of the 1970's through the horror of the eighties and the hope of the nineties, "After Stonewall," gives an incredibly inspirational portrayal of the gay and lesbian struggle for acceptance and normalcy.

The fictional story line of Stonewall is framed by a piece of re-created gay history that has been chronicled before, primarily in such documentaries as Before Stonewall and After Stonewall. But here director Nigel Finch constructs a multilayered entertainment set in and around the Stonewall riots of June 1969 (in New York) that marked the start of gay rights and activism. Stonewall is engaging and sympathetic to the plight of gays everywhere, who survived a world where homosexuality was a fate worse than death (and often resulted in it). This is a movie about survival, oppression, and the self-loathing that is inflicted by a world that refuses to understand anything different from mainstream morality. Within that dynamic is a familiar subplot about a young rube, Matty (Fred Weller), who comes from the Midwest to the big city in order to find himself and falls for a drag queen named La Miranda (Guillermo Díaz) in the process. Finch, who died prior to the film's completion (it was finished by producer Christine Vachon), uncovers something joyous in the angst of his characters and in the factual context of material that might have seemed overworked in less committed hands. --Paula Nechak

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Worth it.......2006-04-07

I noted one of the reviews mentioned the drag queen with the red hair is a "girl gremlin", which is actually funny. I saw the resemblence! However, this film was very well made. Myths of Stonewall combined with some facts and an emphasis on the positive aspects of the events made this film touching in ways. Funny, easy to watch even if you don't dig drag - I'm very happy I took a chance and bought it.

4 out of 5 stars Tongue'N'Cheek with a Message.......2005-09-20

I was surprised of how well-made this flick is! I thought it was going to be a tongue 'n' cheek, frivilous extravaganza; well, tongue 'n' cheek it is, and it's filled with extravagant singing numbers a la Greece, but frivolous it ain't.

This fun film has its heartbreaking and sobering moments as it tells a fictional account of the Stonewall riots that started the Gay Civil Rights movement back in 1969. Even though the story is fictional, it's very real and very relevant especially in this day and age of systematic assault on our hard-earned civil rights.

Gays these days don't know how good they have it! That's why this movie is a must-see for it's a reminder that the freedoms gays and lesbians have now weren't granted to them by society then, and by then I mean just 35 years ago! These rights and freedoms readily enjoyed were fought for with blood and lives sacrificed.

Don't think for one second that those rights couldn't be taken away any second and then you'll see you quickly people turn. Complacency is a luxury we all cannot afford in this age of Patriot Acts and other civil rights slayers.

Rent it or buy it now, but please see it!

3 out of 5 stars horrible, but sort of funny........2005-07-07

This really is one of the worst movies ever. But it has one great feature! The drag queen with the red wig looks like the girl gremlin. Just thinking about that makes me laugh for hours.

4 out of 5 stars One of my favorites........2005-04-26

This is a deeply flawed and highly entertaining Stonewall pastiche. It is told through the eyes of "Matty Dean," a small town boy recently relocated to NYC to discover gay life. He finds that gay life in NYC isn't all he'd cracked it up to be, and is arrested, disappointed at a gay rights demonstration, shocked by the rules and regulation at "gay friendly" Fire Island, and ultimately finds himself caught up in an historic turning point. La Miranda is a (here comes the big CLICHE) tour de force performance, and worth the price of rental/admission/purchase. The clicher: The songs of The Shangri-Las are used as a framing device. Love it!

5 out of 5 stars fabulous stereo DVD - a wonderful historical fantasy.......2004-08-12

My "Stonewall" DVD arrived from Amazon today - and it is absolutely perfect:- it's in the original 4:3 ratio as expected (i.e. not falsely letterboxed to pander to 16:9 screens), but just as important it's in full, pristine stereo. "Stonewall" is regularly aired on Australia's ABC TV - but tragically only in mono. There are simple menus and minimal extras, but the DVD transfer is first class in every respect - and a fitting compliment to all involved with the film, including Nigel Finch the late great director.

"Stonewall" - The Movie was the last film project by Nigel Finch and he died before it was completed. He succeeds in stunning fashion in combining the joys and struggles of youth in an emerging gay rights movement, with the stories of people who already live through severe struggle every day - Blacks, Latinos, transgenders. "Stonewall" shows that the white middle-class gay men were coming from a privileged position - they try to challenge the law and can't even get themselves refused a drink.

Nigel Finch keeps entertainment as a prime consideration, with occasional asides into fantasy musical numbers and some excellent humour (and true drama). We form emotional bonds with several characters - Matty, Bostonia and La Miranda. Bostonia gives us a rare understanding of each transgender's right to choose what they want for their body. Duane Boutte plays this powerful and pivotal character to perfection.

Just recently I watched a tape of one of my all-time favourite documentaries "Kurt Vonnegut" (1983 BBC Films, Arena Series) and was surprised to find that Nigel Finch was the director (he directed several award winning "Arena" documentaries). Nigel's style is clearly evident in both these films - vibrant, slightly surreal, superb script, perfectly timed, absolute integrity to the subject matter and totally entertaining.

Just as with "Kurt Vonnegut", "Stonewall" is a valuable piece of cultural history in the most attractive of packaging.

Product Description

"...an excellent exchange of ideas...both sides were well represented. You won't want to stop watching this until the very end; the debaters' closing remarks tell the whole story." Rep. Bobby Franklin, Georgia House of Representatives. No issue has so divided the United States; no cause has spilled more blood. Join two respected historians and pastors, Peter Marshall and Steve Wilkins, as they revisit the "War Between the States" and attempt to find the heart of God concerning this national tragedy. This historic debate was recorded on February 27th, 1998 before a packed audience in Atlanta, Georgia. The exchange was so interesting and at times intense that C-SPAN aired the debate a dozen times on national television. This special presentation includes historical film footage, photos, and portraits. You can come to your own conclusion as to who was right after watching this fascinating video.

5 out of 5 stars Amen and pass the ammunition!.......2006-10-12

I happened to catch the end of this debate when it first ran on C-Span I believe it was. I was so impressed, I ran out and bought a copy as soon as I could find it. It has been one of the few debates I could enjoy watching more than once. Both men are Presbyterian ministers and amateur historians but never underestimate the ability of amateurs to provide a professional and thoughtful response. Of course, I have an opinion about who won the debate but you will have to watch and decide on your own who won. It is a fascinating debate with a depth that seems rare these days. It is certain to please the historiphile.

5 out of 5 stars READY - AIM - FIRE!!!.......2006-03-23

The Great Civil War Debate was truly that "great." Once it started I was hooked. Both men, Marshall (blue) and Wilkins (gray), did a superb job of defending their sides and positions. The indepth historical analysis and the point/counter point will keep you on the edge of your seat. No scripts, no advantage given to either side, just the hard facts. This production can be used in classrooms or personal enjoyment. From the novice to the Civil War buff. I highley recommend it.

"Shorts from the Vermont Bear Film Festival"

Something for Everyone

Amos Lassen and Cinema Pride

"Shorts from the Vermont Bear Film Festival" (ASI) is wonderful. This collection of 10 short films contains parodies, an interview with "beatnik" poet Allen Ginsberg and footage of the Radical Faeries.
The interview with Ginsberg is a treasure. We get an inside look at Ginsberg as he tell that he is a deeply sexual man lusting after Jack Kerouac. He also reads one of his poems, "In Society" and this is a bold look at Ginsberg was a rebel and f you have never heard him read, you have missed something. No one can read his own work better than then author himself and if for no other reason, this is why you should see the collection.
But there are other reasons why this collection is so good. Many of us have heard of the Radical Faeries and perhaps seen photographs of them but few have had the opportunity to see the faeries on film. Here we can not only see them but we also get to see one of the most instrumental people o gay rights--Harry Hay. In "Goat Boy", a film made by Hay, we have a faerie ritual (complete with frontal nudity). Goat Boy, the character, loves potato chips and when he goes to find some, we get an inside look at the early days of the Radical Faeries in a periodic short film.
"Casey's Dad" is a take-off of "Stacy's Mom" by alternative rock band "Fountains of Wayne" which is very clever. "How Do I Look Mr. Metro Bear" by Wolfgang Bush is a fashion show like none you have ever seen. Boots, bears and chubs are part of "The Hairy Underbelly of Portugal" is my personal favorite and is a revelation. Set to an aria by Verdi and sung by Maria Callas it bearishly looks at the hairy side of part of the Iberian Peninsula.
Clark Nikolai provides three short films, "An der Nordseekuste" (a favorite of the Bear festival goers), "My Heart the Cook" (very funny as it looks at the relationship between bears and food) and "Yankee Lust", a look at the Folsom Street Fair where anything goes and "Men on Fur on Men" a sensual satire on fat, hairy, sagging older men.
The "Oscar" of the Vermont Film Festival is known as the PAW award and it was awarded to "Avec des Excuses a Alfred" by Dan Dowling and Rob Sherman. It watches a hairy man take a shower and satirizes that great shower scene in Alfred Hitchcock's "Psycho".
Hopefully this collection is just the first of many. It preserves part of our history and gives a look at both ourselves and others. This is definitely a must-see.

4 out of 5 stars Not a bad collection of silly bear stuff.......2007-06-27

If you like bear-themed (the gay kind) stuff, this is a worthwhile purchase. By far the best clips are the sing-along "An der Nordseeküste", and "Avec des Excuses á Alfred". There's nothing deep here, but most of it's fun to watch. I'm looking forward to seeing volume 2!

      Product Description

Pink Houses is a low budget film, made to incite social change. The film documents the endurance of love in an intolerant culture. Pink Houses tells the story of John Schenck and Robert Loyd, two men who have experienced Stonewall and Vietnam. However, their biggest battles have taken place in the small town they call home. They now are gay rights activists living in the rural town of Conway, Arkansas. They have organized a mock wedding on the Capitol steps in Little Rock, lead the first Conway Gay Pride Parade, and survived harassment from bigoted locals, including one who dumped 6,000 pounds of manure on John and Robert's yard. While John and Robert have orchestrated many protests and demonstrations, their most persuasive activism is the strength of their loving thirty year relationship. In a society where gay marriage is a highly politicized issue, Pink Houses concentrates on the human aspect of this controversy. This film hopes to prove that love is the most important aspect of marriage.
