Basically a good review, but with some caveats.......2007-09-16

A friend had given me the plain edition of Serenity knowing I loved all things Whedon, so I didn't mind paying for the souped up edition. However, I shouldn't have bothered. Not that the extras aren't fine, but they aren't worth a second purchase if you already have the original. Nonetheless, it's still a remarkable pleasure to watch any version of this film.

So many things good here:

One of the TRULY great films and hardly anyone even knows about it. My highest recommendation for this edition or the original. For this edition:

1) A package so much better than the original release.

2) Bonus material above and beyond the original release.

Still worth getting if you have the original release - I have MULTIPLE copies of BOTH.

Great new edition of one of the best movies ever........2007-09-14

Anyone who hasn't seen Serenity and Firefly, the TV show that preceeded it, doesn't know what they are missing. Really well developed characters, great dialogue, great story, great acting. Joss Whedon writes some of the best female characters around. No idiodic portrayals of a woman dying of a broken heart and leaving her twin babies motherless like someone in a more famous sci-fi movie. These people could be real and they are all characters that are flawed, but have a lot to be admired for too.

Whether you have seen Firefly or not, I think there is something anyone can enjoy about Serenity. I actually saw this movie before watching the Firefly series. I was so intrigued by the story I wanted to see more and believe me, I was not disappointed. Firefly is now one of my favorite TV shows of all time with Serenity being on of my favorite movies.

If you have seen Firefly, there probably won't be any need to tell you how good this movie is. I'm sure you will buy it anyway. But if you are a hardcore fan, there are more extras in this collector's edition that I'm sure you won't want to miss.

For those of you who are just looking for a decent science-fiction film, look no further. This movie has great action, humor, and special affects and it truly cares about its characters. Please please please see this movie!!!

Now for the sequel...........2007-09-14

I loved the show and the movie so now watching the deleted scenes and getting the background information (which were amazing, BTW) I just have to say this: "Joss push for a sequel!" I know that this will never happen, but I can dream. Or I can really genie it and hope that the SciFi channel will come to its senses and re-up this show. Ah yes, back to Firefly.

Anyone who even liked the show has to get this version of the movie! It is a must have for any DVD collection. And don't forget to watch it with the commentaries on.

Alfonso Cuaron's genius works with Harry Potter.......2007-09-06

I enjoyed the first two Harry Potter movies that Chris Columbus directed, but this movie blew those two out of the water completely. Director Alfonso Cuaron transformed the entire series with this movie, making it darker, more artistic, and overall a better movie-watching experience than the other Potter films. A lot of fans are annoyed because of all the differences between the movie and the book, but I think the changes were done in a manner that truly makes Prisoner of Azkaban the best film out of the 5 we've seen so far.

All packaging correct, but wrong movie.......2007-09-05

I purchased the first 4 Harry Potter movies, of which this was one. My review would be positive with one huge exception. The movie that actually appeared when I pressed was The Polar Express. The product arrived quickly. The packaging was in excellent condition. And for my part, my payment was prompt. It's just too bad that quality control missed this one.

The Good, The Bad and The Ugly..........2007-08-26

My favorite BOOK of the series and my LEAST favorite movie of the series so far. I know movies can't always follow the books they're based on EXACTLY-- however, this movie left out some pretty important stuff. Not only that, but things were added to the movie that were not in the book. So here's the good, the bad and the ugly about "Prisoner of Azkaban"...
First-- the good: It's not a bad movie. The acting's good overall. There's a lot of action and a good storyline with a couple of twists and turns toward the end. The scenery is beautiful and you see a lot more of the grounds surrounding Hogwarts than in previous movies...and there's a beautiful scene of Harry's ride on the hippogriff. If you've not read the books but you've seen movies 1 and 2 (or at least know the Harry Potter basics), I think you'll enjoy yourself even if you don't know what the heck is going on all the time. (It IS the third of a series so you DO need to know something of the first two to really know what's going on.)
Now-- the bad: If you really liked the first 2 movies, there are some major changes in this one that are hard to get used to. First, many of the sets are completely different. Now Hagrid's hut is far away from the castle across a long bridge and down a steep hill... and the Whomping Willow (that nearly destroyed the Weasleys' car in movie 2) is out in the forest-- not near the school. (These sets are also used in movies 4 and 5.) Also, many of the faces of other students you're used to seeing in the background (like Susan Bones, Lee Jordan, Oliver Wood) have been replaced by new unfamiliar actors-- some with speaking parts but you can't identify them with characters in the book. (Neville, Dean, and Sean are there, but there's a strange unidentified boy running around with Draco.) Then there's Dumbledore... When Mr. Harris died, they understandably had to find a relacement. But Mr. Gambon plays a much different Dumbledore than Mr. Harris did. He's not bad-- just different. He looks different, dresses differently, moves around quicker and just doesn't have that powerful calm presence that is associated with the character and which Mr. Harris achieved so well. Also, it's a little weird that Professor Flitwick, who was portrayed in the last movies as an old grey haired wizard, is now much younger with short black hair and a moustache! Some people enjoyed the "new look" of the movie... others (including myself) didn't.
Okay-- now for the ugly: For those who've read and enjoyed Book 3, I think you'll be anywhere from 'somewhat' to 'severely' disappointed. There are (of course) a lot of nitpicky things I could mention (like Lupin's moustache, or dementors flying instead of floating above the ground, etc.), but there are some major problems. First, there are things that are not in the book but came right out of the director's head:
1. Talking shrunken heads (with Jamaican accents for some reason) that seem to be everywhere.
2. Tom, who tends the Leaky Cauldron and is described as stooped and toothless in the book, is now bald with a hump and a limp and acts like some freakish Igor in an old Frankenstein movie.
3. Then there's the infamous first seconds of the movie where Harry is using his wand to practice magic at the Dursley's-- which I don't have to tell anyone who's familiar with the books OR the previous movies is a BIG no-no! Considering the penalty Harry receives in Book 5 for using his wand outside of school... well, let's just say that a little research would have gone a long way.
4. Then there's the "Fat Lady"... It isn't the film time that was wasted having the Fat Lady refuse the students entrance to the Gryffindor common room until she could break a wine glass with her voice that's the problem... it's the fact that the SECRET entrance to Gryffindor Tower is (according to Cuaron) right off the main staircase where everyone can see it!!
5. And even though the hippogriff in the movie is as it's described in the book, the other important magical beast towards the end of the movie is absolutely NOTHING like JKR described him (and it would have been a lot scarier if he he had been)!
And now it gets REAL ugly: Without giving away the ending or twists in the story-- key important bits of information that are revealed in Book 3 are left out! For instance, the Marauder's Map is given to Harry, but its origin and inventors are never mentioned. Sirius Black escapes from Azkaban, but how he was able to do it is never revealed. No mention is made of what James Potter (Harry's dad) and his friends were doing while at Hogwarts or why. The reason for the Shrieking Shack and the Whomping Willow is never explained. Why Harry's patronus manifests as a stag is also never explained (even though it does appear as such in the movie). Such information would have given this movie more depth and is one of the reasons the book is so popular. It gave a peek into the life of Harry's dad and broadened Harry's world a little. Without James Potter and his friends doing what they did all those years ago, all the events in Book 3 never would have happened and Harry's third year at Hogwarts would have been as boring as my 8th grade year in Junior High. Why none of this was included is beyond me. Had it been, it would have been a much better movie.
**My recommendations: If you want depth and explanation and a good background story that ties everything together... get the book and read it. If you just want a good action/adventure movie that you can watch with the kids and not be completely bored out of your mind... get the DVD.
**Parental note: This movie is rated PG for violence (monsters and ghouly dementors and such) and may be a bit too scary for the little ones.

There are several Kimble-Gerard near misses, the most memorable occurring in the two-parter "Never Wave Goodbye," in which Kimble, tired of running, puts down roots as an apprentice sailmaker in Santa Barbara. In the storm-tossed climax, Kimble must decide whether to let Gerard drown or save his life. Essential to The Fugitive mythology is "The Girl from Little Egypt," in which Kimble, recuperating after being hit by a car, flashes back to the events preceding his wife's murder and his subsequent trial, conviction and escape from a Death Row-bound train. We also get our first, harrowing glimpse of the one-armed man (Bert Raisch). Another benchmark episode is "Home Is the Hunted," in which Kimble returns home following his father's heart attack and gets a less than warm welcome from his embittered brother (look for young Billy Mumy and Clint Howard as Kimble's nephews). I have been checking your website waiting for The Fugitive to become available. I was so excited to see it had finally been released. I ordered it immediately and am so pleased with the quality. The picture is sharp and clear and the sound is excellent. I was 10 years old when The Fugitive first aired on September 17, 1963. I never missed an episode and I cried when "the running stopped". How wonderful to have something you loved as a child now available to enjoy over and over. I look forward to the other seasons becoming available. Thanks!

Finally!.......2007-09-16

It's embarassing to try and remember how many times I've checked online to see if CBS was ever going to release "The Fugitive" on DVD. This show is about twenty years before my time but got hooked on it in syndication in the 90's (thank you WWOR). After years of waiting, one of the best dramas of the 60s is here on DVD and it was worth the wait. There are 15 episodes in this collection (120 total in the series) Each episode looks and sounds terrific, I'm about 3/4 through my set (trying to take my time, not knowing when the next volume is coming) and have yet to see an episode I didn't think was amazing. David Janssen and Barry Morse are splendidly human and empathetic in their portrayals of prey and predator, all the guest stars (known and unknown) more than pull their weight and the constant unyeilding change of scenery really gives you an understanding of the oppressive nature of his involuntarily nomadic lifestyle.

This show is formulaic, but proves that following a formula doesn't have to be a shortcoming when the execution is outstanding. That's as much a credit to the writers as it is to the numerous directors who took the reigns from episode to episode; many of the directors and writers had backgrounds in film and it shows as every episode feels like a movie, filled with real emotional content (dare I say drama?), and good old-fashioned suspense. As a viewer you find yourself genuinely caring about the characters and almost stressing over their fates.

My only lament is the absence of special features (I know most of the people involved with the show have passed on but it would be nice to hear some anecdotes from Barry Morse at the least, somebody needs to put that man in an easy chair and just roll film, let him talk, it doesn't have to be an Orson Welles production...). But even with the absence of special features, this is a great buy for any fans of the show, any fans of the movie with Harrison Ford, any fans of great television, any fans of great storytelling and acting. Treat yourself to one of the bright points in American television, am positive this is one of the great TV-on-DVD purchases you can make, take a chance and discover!

Excellent, one of the best TV shows ever!.......2007-09-16

What can I say that hasn't been said already? I am very happy with the quality of the DVD and can't wait for Volume II, I wish they could have had some vintage behind the scenes or some interviews with surviving guest stars or some still alive? That would have been really cool. Either way, I remember watching this at 3am in the morning years ago on local TV, ah but those days are gone, now it is either Matlock (zzzzzzzzzz) or informercials.
The Fuguitve is one of the best written TV shows of all time and the acting is impecable by some of the golden age of TVs greatest American character actors.
This show is haunting and David Jansen is incredible. As is Barry Morse.
It doesn't get any better than this. I have been waiting a long time.

Route 66 - Season 1, Vol. 1 is finally being released on DVD on 10//23/07! The Fugitive and Route 66 are my all time favorite television dramas! Parmamount/CBS DVD did an excellent job with the transfer of the Fugitive. I taped this show when it was A&E and just threw my VHS tapes in the trash. I HATE!!!! that they split the seasons up to make money. I'd rather pay the extra $$$ to keep the season whole. They did the same to the Streets of San Francisco too, I wish they would stop it! In any event this DVD is well worth the money it looks great, sounds great and is better than anything on TV today... Please release the next part NOW!!! You know I will I buy it despite my objections!

The Fugitive Season 1 Volume one.......2007-09-15

This series stands the test of time. The episodes are still gripping and emotionally involving, but without any over the top violence or language. For example, the meeting between the two protagonists in "Nightmare at Northoak" is one of the best encounters ever to take place on television. I was totally absorbed by the series as a teenager, and still have not seen it enough. I would rate this as one of the best dramatic series ever, and it is past time it should be available in its entirety.

Couldn't Get Into This One.......2007-09-09

Not having ever watched the TV series, I walked into this one with no preconceived notions. As an HD DVD, the picture and sound was phenomenal. But...I stopped watching about half way through it because it was boring. There was a brief glimpse of action when River morphed into a Trinity-inspired kung-fu master (Matrix reference). Other than that, I found this to be a Star Trek inspired knock-off. My understanding is that the TV series was cancelled. I now know why.

Another job well done! I loved this movie but the movie cover stinks. Where in the movie does anything on the front cover happen? I'm glad that the movie came out and it was an awesome movie. It really tied up loose ends! Thank you Joss Whedon!

As for the people mad about the preacher dying and Wash dying, they wanted to be written out of the script in case they brought the show back. It wasn't Joss' call.

Best Movie I've Seen Lately.......2007-09-05

This is a movie that I came upon from the critics on TV (you know, two names of two guys that have a lot to say). Well, I was glad that they did. This movie had me fall in love with all the characters in the story line and then also in the story line too. I enjoyed both the male and female roles and this is usually not the case for me. The name "Serenity" is the name of the spaceship that finds itself home for everyone. The way that the spaceship looked and was laid out was great to look at. The plot lines of the movie was great and I suggest you see the TV shows first (named "Firefly" after the type of spaceship that Serenity is designed as). The TV shows will give you a lot of insight on the characters and how they interact and this makes the movie much more enjoyable. I purchased both the seasons for Firefly and the movie; something I rarely do. I feel that there is so much good stuff out there why would I want to take up the time watching something more that at least twice. But I know that I will watch all of these many more times that two as I have a not so secret crush on the main character, Mal. Hope everyone out there enjoys this movie as much as I do.

I purchased the FIREFLY series awhile before this film came out. Feel sorry for those who went into a theatre (or bought the DVD) to watch SERENITY without such a background; may have been totally incomprehensible, certainly lacking in any emotional commitment. That is why the 3 stars...

1993's "The Fugitive" stars Harrison Ford as the title character in a very worthwhile movie remake of the 1960's television series that starred David Janssen.

As in the TV series, Dr. Richard Kimble (Ford) is falsely convicted of having murdered his wife but escapes from custody during a spectacular train wreck. Kimble returns to Chicago to seek the one-armed man who really killed his wife, while trying to stay one step ahead of his relentless pursuer. Tommy Lee Jones reprises the role of Gerrard, the obsessed detective of the TV series. Kimble's search for the real killer will end in a dead heat with Gerrard's pursuit of the runaway doctor inside a Chicago hotel.

Although obviously lacking the extended suspense of the four-year TV series, the movie captures the essential elements of its predecessor. The Fugitive tracks the real killer through a thin string of clues. At the same time, he must stay on the move and off the grid to avoid his relentless police pursuer. Along the way, his random acts of kindness for total strangers convince the viewer of his real innocence.

Harrison Ford is entirely credible as the doctor on the run, in a more emotional portrayal than the stoic David Janssen. Tommy Lee Jones as the pursuing U.S. Marshal is a more complete and sympathetic character than Barry Morse's grim, humorless rendition in the original series, enough so to rate a OSCAR and his own sequel (U.S. Marshals).

The availability of modern special effects and the need to pack the story into a feature length movie makes for breathless pacing, as the Fugitive makes a series of spectacular escapes from the law, beginning with the train wreck that saves him from the death house. Of necessity, Kimble's trail of clues is fairly intact and leads him fairly quickly to the one-armed man, and to an unsuspected and deadly conspiracy.

Fans of the 1960's TV program will enjoy this well-done movie if they can handle the time compression; viewers arriving fresh to the story will find this a breathless and thrilling chase with a surprising ending.

A textbook example of a first-rate thriller, buoyed by Davis's breathless pacing and a picture-stealing performance from Jones, who won an Oscar. Drawing from his Indiana Jones days, Ford is just right as the besieged hero always one step ahead of disaster, but Jones's Gerard, whose drive is offset by a wry, folksy humor, is intensely charismatic as the intrepid hound-dog on Kimble's trail. Over ten years after its initial release, it's worth another peek if you haven't seen it since. First-timers should definitely plunge.

PLOT SYNOPSIS

Dr. Kimble (Harrison Ford) arrived home one night to find his wife Helen on the verge of death after being brutally attacked by a one armed maniac. Before she died, she was able to make a desperate call to 9-11, so the police arrive shortly after the incident, just in time to find Helen dead. The police notice that Kimble is all scratched up, as though he had just been in a fight or had just murdered his wife himself. Despite Kimble's description of the true culprit, the police arrest him and charge him of his wife's murder. The trial goes badly and Kimble is sentenced to death by execution.

On a prison bus, on his way to the facility that housed the chamber that would eventually kill him, some other convicts attempt to pull off an escape. There is a violent uprising inside of the bus and the lumbering vehicle tumbles down a hill and stops on a railroad track. The oncoming train collides with the bus and creates one of the most spectacular train wreck scenes to ever appear on film. By chance, Kimble, and another convict, make it out of the crash alive and set out on foot to escape the law enforcement personnel who are sure to appear once they learn about the disaster.

Unfortunately for Kimble, the federal marshal who is put in charge of the operation is none other than Sam Gerard (Tommy Lee Jones), who is completely determined, quick-thinking, and efficient. He is unbendingly bound to his duty and will stop at nothing to catch his man. This is revealed in the famous tunnel scene, when Kimble points a gun at him and says "I did not kill my wife," Gerard retort is the cold "I don't care."

Since Kimble has already been convicted and sentenced to death, his chances of resurrecting any kind of life are exceedingly grim. He can either hide out for the rest of his life, or try to lead law enforcement to the real culprit. In order to accomplish the second option, Kimble would have to investigate himself, and somehow, based on the scant evidence at his disposal, somehow find the criminal. But can he do it before the brilliant Gerard closes in on him?

ACTING

Tommy Lee Jones' performance is one of those performances that won, and actually did deserve to win the Oscar. Every second of Jones' performance is absolutely convincing. It is rare that an individual's character can be developed so fully in a two hour film. He is more than the stereotypical, "success at all costs" law enforcement office. From his persuasive scowls when he hears of Kimble's successes, to the tone of his voice when he barks orders and makes observations, his performance alone is enough to watch this movie several times.

Harrison Ford logs in another solid performance. Over the course of the last 30 years, Ford has been one of the most consistent actors of all time. The Fugitive is actually one of his better roles. He plays the part of Richard Kimble to near perfection.

It is not uncommon to see two huge stars on one film at the same time, but it is uncommon that they perfectly fit the characters that they are asked to portray, and it is nothing short of a rarity that they interact in such a memorable fashion as they did in the fugitive.

The more minor actors are nothing special, but they are not bad either. Jerome Krabbe played a respectable Dr. Charles Nichols,, with his hair parted neatly to the side and his somewhat nerdy smile, he represented what most Americans picture when they imagine a highly educated doctor. Joe Pantoliano played Cosmo, Gerard's assistant. We get a lot of sarcasm in a high pitched voice, and that is what Pantoliano is known for. It added some extra entertainment and made the mechanical law enforcement machine slightly more human-like.

SO DOES IT THRILL?

How does the fugitive stack up against other thrillers? Most thrillers, even some successful ones, have a small amount of tension causing elements. The movie-makers work with a somewhat limited script, and get as much thrill as they can on two or three suspense-provoking fundamentals. Sometimes these movies do an excellent job at thrilling us, and leave us satisfied. The producers, directors, and actors of the fugitive did not need to stretch out every possible element for cheap thrills, the script, which took years and million dollars in development, thrills the audience on multiple levels. Even mediocre actors would have turned this script into a nail-biting experience, the super performances by Jones and Ford only make it even better.

This one is definitely a classic in its genre. If you still haven't seen it, do yourself a favor and check it out.

Blast from the Past - Old Movies.......2007-08-13

I have 4 granddaughters and they all love movies as much as cartoons -
Annie, Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, Mary Poppins, Wizard of Oz, etc. Soooo, I have been buying some of the older movies that I watched - Pollyanna, Old Yeller.
Then, I remembered when my kids were little and we got cable one of the first movies we watched was Savannah Smiles. I ordered it and the little girls all loved it, and their parents (my kids) loved that they loved it.
I had remembered that it was a precious movie, but I forgot how precious.
Note: There are a few bad words - ex. bastard for one. I wasn't crazy about that, but just made a point to say, "Oh, my goodness, that wasn't a very nice word!!", if I thought it was necessary to address.

I looked for this movie on DVD for ages. It was even hard to find on VHS. We had nearly worn out our 1980s video recording from cable.
When I had first read about the movie, I thought it would be a "The Ransom of Red Chief" sort of tale, but this was not the case.
"Savannah Smiles" is an odd little story, and I hope it has never inspired a child to run away in order to punish a neglectful parent. Not every person who would find such a child would turn out to be as kind-hearted as Boots (Donovan) and Alvie (Miller). These two convicts (ex-con, in Boots' case) have led hard lives with a great deal of neglect and abuse, themselves. Yet getting to know Savannah (Andersen) and protecting her from the bad things of the world allows them both to learn they can be and are more than they ever thought possible. They tell Savannah that when she ran away, she did something very reckless and dangerous, and that not everyone out in the world would be nice to her. Her safety becomes very important to them.
We can't say as much for Savannah's father, a PR-hungry politician with no heart. (Ironically, he is portrayed by Chris Robinson, whom viewers might remember as Laura's beloved step-dad on General Hospital.)
I loved watching this movie with my kids. They are all grown now, but this movie still holds a special place in all our hearts.
Mark Miller seemed familiar to me. Besides being the actor who portrayed tough-guy Alvie, he was the man who wrote the story and the screenplay. He had also played the part of the dad on a 1960s TV show called "Please Don't Eat the Daisies," which I adored as a kid. One of his real-life daughters is named Savannah.
Sadly, the story of Bridgette Andersen does not have a happy ending. She died from a drug overdose before her twenty-second birthday. What a waste of human life and talent! This bit of her that she leaves behind reveals a sparkle of love and hope. It makes one wonder what might have been.

Bridgette Andersne would be one of the most talented actresses of this age her acting was superb. I had tears and laughter what a delightful story of this little girl who was neglected by her parents and trusted two hardened criminals. I throughly enjoyed it.

I was so excited to find this movie, I told my daughter and she asked me to order one for her also, we would watch this movie when our kyds were little, we recorded it off TV and we watched it so much we finally wore out the tape so this find was a treasure.
