No film better utilizes Audrey Hepburn's flighty charm and svelte beauty than this romantic adaptation of Truman Capote's novella. Hepburn's urban sophisticate Holly Golightly, an enchanting neurotic living off the gifts of gentlemen, is a bewitching figure in designer dresses and costume jewelry. George Peppard is her upstairs neighbor, a struggling writer and "kept" man financed by a steely older woman (Patricia Neal). His growing friendship with the lonely Holly soon turns to love and threatens the delicate balance of both of their compromised lives. Taking liberties with Capote's bittersweet story, director Blake Edwards and screenwriter George Axelrod turn New York into a city of lovers and create a poignant portrait of Holly, a frustrated romantic with a secret past and a hidden vulnerability. Composer Henry Mancini earned Oscars for the hit song "Moon River" and his tastefully romantic score. The only sour note in the whole film is Mickey Rooney's demeaning performance as the apartment's Japanese manager, an offensively overdone stereotype even in 1961. The rest of the film has weathered the decades well. Edwards's elegant yet light touch, Axelrod's generous screenplay, and Hepburn's mix of knowing experience and naiveté combine to create one of the great screen romances and a refined slice of high society bohemian chic. --Sean Axmaker

Product Description

Winner of two Oscars®, the romantic comedy that sparkles like diamonds! From the opening strains of Henry Mancini and Johnny Mercer's haunting, Oscar®-winning song "Moon River," you'll once again be under the alluring spell of that madcap, carefree New York playgirl known as Holly Golightly (Audrey Hepburn) in this 24-carat romantic comedy based of Truman Capote's best-selling novella. George Peppard is the struggling and "sponsored" young writer who finds himself swept into Holly's dizzying, delightfully unstructured lifestyle as she determinedly scours Manhattan for a suitable millionaire to marry. The sparkling special features on this Anniversary Edition DVD only add to the luster of director Blake Edwards' timeless film classic. Patricia Neal, Buddy Ebsen, Martin Balsam and Mickey Rooney co-star; Mancini won an additional Academy Award® for his enthralling musical score.

5 out of 5 stars Fun, Flirty and Resplendent .......2007-08-11

This great romantic classic features the glowing Audrey Hepburn as a callous, innocent society girl who wants no permanent home. This rule applies to her cat as well, whom she refuses to give a name to because she doesn't feel she'll keep it .

George Peppard is the single writer and "escort" of an older woman.

After some scandal and a fiance who later breaks off the engagement,Holly finds the love she's looking for in Peppard and together they find the cat and .who knows ?

Audrey is stunning, dreaming and convincing in her role.

This is pretty different from Capote's terrific novella. They "Hollywood-ized" so much of it, that it could only be described as "loosely" based on...... if you have modern movie sensibilities, you may find this way too predictable and sappy, especially the ending. I heard that Capote didn't think much of the movie, and I'm inclined to agree.

5 out of 5 stars Cute movie - Unrated, but Not for young children.......2007-07-08

This is one of my favorite fun movies! I like the special DVD edition with the extras and interviews. I agree that the casting of Mickey Rooney as a japanese man might have been better played by a japanese actor. Breakfast at Tiffany's was Audrey Hepburn's best. I love Funny Face too because both are fun.

4 out of 5 stars Wild ride on the wild side of privilege.......2007-07-05

BaT is one of those films that gives viewers an insight into the lives and mindset of an entire period. Audrey Hepburn plays impulsive-yet-fragile Holly Golightly, a young woman living the high life in New York City around 1960. There is much about the film that is bizarre and almost otherworldly. Holly is a woman of exquisite taste and fantastic connections, with a perhaps non-existent body of work and (beyond comic scamming of her rich dates) no evident means of support. She doesn't seem to be a movie star, and (regardless of how Truman Capote may have written her originally) shows little evidence of being a call girl. She throws lavish parties, loves to hang around Tiffany's and lives alone in a largish apartment in notoriously expensive NYC. She may or may not be naïve about the "weather reports" she is asked to pass along, for a modest stipend, by a mobster she visits weekly in Sing-Sing prison. She quickly starts up a relation-by-fire-escape with Paul Varjak, a young writer who moved into the apartment upstairs. Varjak is a "kept" man, who is supported by a middle-aged society woman. Predictably, the two young people fall in love, though Holly is notoriously skittish about commitments of any kind.

The film is smart, based on a story by Capote, and exudes a tamed version of debauched high society hijinks that must have seemed shocking when the film was released. Alcohol flows copiously at Holly's parties, with people dancing with more or less wild abandon until the cops arrive to quiet things down. The idea of mixing Holly up with narcotics dealers is pretty edgy also, as is the clear indication of the sexual relationship between Varjak and his married benefactrice. Indeed, the sexual tension is kept rather high throughout the film. In one memorable scene, Holly escapes a drunken date by climbing a window into Varjak's apartment. Holly is clad only in a nightgown, and Varjak, in bed after an assignation with his lover, is seemingly naked under the covers. Their conversation, held on Varjak's bed, is at once titillating and awkward.
But all is not as it seems. In spite of her seeming sophistication, Holly has commitments "back home" in Arkansas. Her impulse is always to flee, which threatens her budding romance with Varjak. The rest of the film deals with whether she will run away once again or settle down with a man who loves her.

BaT fascinates by giving us a glimpse into Holly -- an intriguing and beguiling creature -- and the life she leads. Who is she? And how does she manage to both attract and keep so many men at bay? Hepburn gives us the 1950s-vintage portrait of the alluring female, ever in search of a sugar daddy. Yet this is also what modern eyes find repellent. Holly may be presented as the charming sum of her behaviors, but psychologically, she is a mess. She drinks too much, pretends not to understand she is being manipulated, cavorts in the scandalous limelight. She is almost a cartoon -- hardly someone who could be understood as real. Yet Hepburn brings a charm, cuteness and vulnerability to make the film very engaging. By the end of the film, you will have fallen for her like everyone else.

The rest of the cast stands out -- George Peppard as Varjak, Martin Balsam as Holly's agent, and Buddy Ebsen as her back-home interest. The only sour note is played by Mickey Rooney, who plays a stereotypical buck-toothed, myopic Japanese neighbor forever banging into things and threatening to summon the police to ends Holly's noisy parties.

BaT is still worth the watch after 40 years, if only to observe the world that many found fascinating in an age that considered itself more optimistic and innocent than our own.

Elvis Presley's seventh film was the first of his "Hawaii trilogy" (including Girls! Girls! Girls! and Paradise, Hawaiian Style). While its story is daft--the King has just been released from his Army posting in Italy and returned to the islands, where he's trying to avoid working in his father's fruit business--the music is not: "Blue Hawaii," "Almost Always True," and the beautiful "Can't Help Falling in Love." Angela Lansbury plays Elvis's mother, who can't seem to get through to him. Directed by the star's frequent collaborator, Norman Taurog (G.I. Blues). --Tom Keogh

blast from the past? I was 10 and I thought how handsome Elvis was, and how blue the sky in Hawaii was. The Technicolor is terrific. Just like a Doris Day film. No real plot but you just can't beat Hawaii for sheer beauty. Pure fun, no calories. Enjoy!

4 out of 5 stars Elvis In His Prime In Totally Enjoyable Hawaiian Romance.......2007-07-13

I most certainly am not going to refer to the 1961 Elvis Presley movie "Blue Hawaii", as a "guilty pleasure", it's a pleasure, pure and simple. To see Elvis Presley in his legendary prime in a romantic vehicle totally suited to his talents "Blue Hawaii", is one of the best films of his to try and catch. For a "60's child", like myself this film is a wonderful nostalgic excursion into times long gone by when I first saw this film as a youngster on a double bill with another Presley vehicle "Kid Galahad", at the local Theatre. I guess that's alot of the appeal of "Blue Hawaii", devoid as it is of any deep meanings or seriousness which nevertheless makes it an ideal way to spend some time. Combining some great songs handled with the usual smoothness and expertise by the "King", himself, a terrific supporting cast which includes a priceless performance by muli talented Angela Lansbury as Elvis' mother, and some of the most gorgeous Hawaiian scenery you could imagine, the film is entertaining as both a musical and as a travel log of Hawaii in all its natural beauty. Elvis made another enjoyable opus in Hawaii titled "Paradise, Hawaiian Style" in 1966 however I feel "Blue Hawaii", ties in closer with the Elvis Presley legend making it the one film of his to see if you want a quick snapshot of what made him such a special and much loved performer.

Amazon.com

Cult comic actor Steve Carell--long adored for his supporting work on The Daily Show and in movies like Bruce Almighty and Anchorman--leaps into leading man status with The 40 Year-Old Virgin. There's no point describing the plot; it's about how a 40 year-old virgin named Andy (Carell) finally finds true love and gets laid. Along the way, there are very funny scenes involving being coached by his friends, speed dating, being propositioned by his female manager, and getting his chest waxed. Carell finds both humor and humanity in Andy, and the supporting cast includes some standout comic work from Paul Rudd (Clueless, The Shape of Things) and Jane Lynch (Best in Show, A Mighty Wind), as well as an unusually straight performance from Catherine Keener (Lovely & Amazing, Being John Malkovich). And yet... something about the movie misses the mark. It skirts around the topic of male sexual anxiety, mining it for easy jokes, but never really digs into anything that would make the men in the audience actually squirm--and it's a lot less funny as a result. Nonetheless, there are many great bits, and Carell deserves the chance to shine. --Bret Fetzer

5 out of 5 stars Some Things Are Worth the Wait..........2007-09-03

"The 40 Year Old Virgin" was a movie that I was on the fence about seeing for a long time. When I saw the trailer for it on TV and in theaters I thought it looked like it had possibilities of being funny, but then I wondered if all the good stuff had already been shown like so many other comedies do in their previews anymore. With that thought I managed to talk myself out of seeing the movie in theaters, opting to wait for DVD instead. The time came for the DVD release and I found myself with little interest in watching the movie, since it had been a while since I had seen the previews, and the desire to see it had waned. However, a co-worker was talking about seeing it again recently, and how funny it still was even after multiple viewings. When I mentioned that I had seen the movie, and what my concerns were regarding how funny it would still be beyond seeing the previews, to which the response was that the previews didn't even show the half of it. So, needless to say that was enough to get my interest back, and I decided to rent "The 40 Year Old Virgin" for the wife and I to hopefully enjoy thoroughly once the kids were asleep.

"The 40 Year Old Virgin" is the story of a man named Andy (Steve Carell), a stock room manager at a tech store who is content with living the life of a single man who loves to collect toys (never opening them from their box to ensure their value), play video games, and just have some good wholesome fun. During a poker night with some friends, the conversation is steered towards their individual sex lives, all of which seem to have some rather exaggerated details included, and when it comes to Andy's turn to share he flubs his way through a story that is so paper thin that it becomes very apparent that he is indeed still a virgin. With this discovery his friends take it upon themselves to solve, what they deem to be a problem, for Andy by trying to hook him up with a woman. However, their methods are not necessarily what's best for Andy, and their tips seem to range from bad to worse. With all this going on in his life, insanity seems like a sure bet, but then a woman named Trish (Catherine Keener) comes along who just might be the perfect woman to bring some stability to Andy's life, so long as his friends don't mess it up too much first.

This is a movie that I must say truly surprised me. Sure it contained the raunchy comedy that I expected from a movie with a title such as this, of course there is plenty of awkward situations (that are hilarious mind you) as his friends attempt to fix him up with a girl, and yes, the moral compass for the film is greatly skewed (for most of the characters anyway), but what I didn't expect was the endearing goodness and sincerity of Andy that serves as an anchor for all of the outlandish hilarity that ensues throughout the movie. Steve Carell's character, though he struggles with the temptations that his friends thrust upon him, he manages to hold on to his virtue of being a virgin (though this wasn't purposely done on his part, just a victim of circumstance), and in the end chooses to wait for the love of his life rather than have a meaningless fling. Having the main character be someone like this, who ends up having a strong moral compass, in this type of movie was a very welcome change of pace, and one that probably made this movie be better than it would have been allowing it to stand out from the rest of the crop.

The cast comprised of very talented comedic actors, such as; Seth Rogen ("Knocked Up"), Paul Rudd ("Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy") and of course, the star of the show Steve Carell ("Evan Almighty"), each of whom brought their characters to such hilarious and memorable life. The talented cast would have been nothing if not for the direction of experienced writer/producer, but relative newcomer to directing, Judd Apatow. Apatow, who also helped co-write the movie with Steve Carell, brought a freshness to the adult comedy genre opting to have more hilarious scenes, jokes, and even some drama, rather than relying on gratuitous nudity to carry the movie.

"The 40 Year Old Virgin" is very much an adult oriented comedy that is not at all safe for children, but it is without a doubt a hilarious movie filled with innuendo, sometimes raunchy comedy, and even some sweetness that is definitely worth watching, and is even one of the few of its kind that is even remotely original.

"The 40 Year Old Virgin" is available in rated R and unrated editions, both contain language, sexual references, and nudity.

5 out of 5 stars Love this movie!!.......2007-09-03

I love this movie! It was one of the funniest movies I've seen. All the actors did a great job. Some of the people who have reviewed this movie on Amazon are way too uptight. If you didn't enjoy it, you had the option of not watching it! No one put a gun to your head and forced you to sit through it, sheesh! Anyway, as I said, I thought it was way funny!

It's So Worth It!!! If you loved this film "Knocked Up" will rock your world on HD DVD.

5 out of 5 stars not your typical movie.......2007-08-14

As a virgin myself, I found the 40-Year Old Virgin absolutely hysterical. This film contains the kind of humor that starts off quite normal and inoffensive, then as the plot rolls along some very adult-like jokes are surprisingly thrown into the mix. Definitely not a movie for children. However, the acting is quite phenomenal, and the story of how a man goes from being single all his life to suddenly finding the right woman was done really well. I also liked the ending a lot and the right song was definitely playing (an old instrumental from the 70's). That was the right song because I can only imagine the moment after losing your virginity, you become temporarily speechless and therefore, a vocal melody wouldn't work. Perfect choice! Great movie overall. Definitely a movie where the humor is more interesting and intelligent compared to all those typical teen movies people keep comparing this movie to.

2 out of 5 stars Actually Kinda Gross.......2007-08-03

After reading all the hype about how funny and amazing this film was all I can say is YUCK. Steve Carrell stars as a nerdy 40 year old virgin who works at a Circuit-City style store. After agreeing to play poker with some co-workers his newfound friends discover he is a virgin and decide to help him get laid.

Okay, It could've been funny with a premise like this, but the characters resorted to cheap shots. The asian-hair removal place, the drunk chick throwing up on the hero, the drag queen etc. This was just puerile gross-out humor. When he finally does find the 'woman of his dreams,' the romance is predictable and boring. Also was it neccessary to show so many saggy-chested silcone enhanced topless women? Gross.

This movie seemed cheap and tacky and I didn't laugh once.

John G. Avildsen not only directed Rocky, he tried remaking it over the years in a dozen different ways. One of them was this popular 1984 drama about a new kid (Ralph Macchio) in town targeted by karate-wielding bullies until he gets a new mentor: the handyman (Pat Morita) from his apartment building, who teaches him self-confidence and fighting skills. The screen partnership of Macchio's motor-mouth character and Morita's reserved father figure works well, and the script allows for the younger man to develop sympathy for the painful memories of his teacher. But the film's real engine, as with Rocky, is the fighting, and there's plenty of that. Elisabeth Shue is on board as the girl the klutzy Macchio dreams of winning. --Tom Keogh

Description

A fatherless teenager faces his moment of truth in The Karate Kid. Daniel (Ralph Macchio) arrives in Los Angeles from the east coast and faces the difficult task of making new friends. However, he becomes the object of bullying by the Cobras, a menacing gang of karate students, when he strikes up a relationship with Ali (Elisabeth Shue), the Cobra leader's ex-girlfriend. Eager to fight back and impress his new girlfriend but afraid to confront the dangerous gang, Daniel asks his handyman Miyagi (Noriyuki 'Pat' Morita), whom he learns is a master of the martial arts, to teach him karate. Miyagi teaches Daniel that karate is a mastery over the self, mind, and body and that fighting is always the last answer to a problem. Under Miyagi's guidance, Daniel develops not only physical skills but also the faith and self-confidence to compete despite tremendous odds as he encounters the fight of his life in the exciting finale to this entertaining film.

5 out of 5 stars Entertainment for the whole family.......2007-09-13

As a mother of boys, I am always looking out for movies about boys that will hold interest and give a positive theme. The Karate Kid is just perfect! It has a few curse words, but they ARE few. My boys range from 15 years to 6 years, and they all stayed with this one. Yes, the cheesy 80's styles and music were good for a chuckle or two, but otherwise the message is timeless. Enjoy!!
Note: My boys enjoyed the second one aw well...

5 out of 5 stars Even after all these years..........2007-08-23

I loved this movie when I was a little kid and even after watching it after all this time it's still awesome. You're still rooting for Daniel to win and kick [...] and he does it! I ran around the house for days (when I was younger) doing the crane after first watching the movie. It's just classic.

5 out of 5 stars Best of the bunch.......2007-08-01

The sequels were enjoyable for those who watched the original but by itself, the first is just better and more of a gem-Like Rocky movies. ''Pat'' Morita shines in this role which he's best known for around the world. Starting out a sobering and harsh figure, intimidating even as a short old man to Daniel, the young kid/fish out of water. Being bullied by the punk kids who rule the highschool and are karate experts at a local fancy dojo/martial arts school, Daniel gets Mr. Miyagi to teach him how to defend himself against his preppy but still dangerous classmates. He does this in exchange for helping the old man with his extreme makeover home edition. This leads to one of the most memorable lines of all the 80s movies. ''Wax on, Wax off''. Not to be a spoiler but after Daniel is seemingly beeing taken advantage of after hours and hours of hard labor and blowing up at the old man, intimidated as he was by him, he is in for a real surprise. The chores were all part of the training and he's now no longer defenseless. It's a cute idea that when you see for yourself comes across as natural and realistic. Good stuff Maynardsan. Now the two have a genuine bond and the movie plays out with two characters and actors that play off of each other almost like they'd worked together in some karate kid play for years. There are a lot of teacher/student karate flicks but this one was high quality, good sense of humor, good characters, good willed and like many say, a surprisingly good story to go along with the kicking and punching. Pat Morita is definitely doing a great acting job since he's far from the stern figure that Mr. Miyagi is-stern especially in the beginning of this first movie. This man was a comic in real life you know. Friends said that he played Mr. Miyagi partly based off of his own father and other people he knew of japanese descent from his dad's generation. Reportedly, his older brother saw the movie and teared up saying ''that's papa up there.'' Great actors, great script, great production. Is it on the hokey side looking back on it over twenty years later? Yeah, sure when compared to the sarcastic self-parodying stuff our tastes lean towards now...But so what? This really is one of those movies you can dig out from time to time and watch over again.

5 out of 5 stars MUCH BETTER THEN YOU WOULD THINK!.......2007-08-01

I hadn't seen this film in 20 years and I am amazed at how well it has held up! Macchio and Morita give excellent performances in this "Rocky" type underdog movie for kids. The thing is, it isn't really just for kids! The uplifting story and acting ring true to anyone who was ever a "new kid" or picked on. It has made me want to re-visit the whole series!....Here we go again!

5 out of 5 stars "You remember lesson about balance? Lesson not just karate only. Lesson for all life.".......2007-07-27

In 1984 Columbia Pictures released one of the best teen movies of all time. These days "teen movie" has come to imply a brainless flick about brainless characters working their way through a brainless script. (Eurotrip, anyone?) We may call The Karate Kid a teen movie only in the sense that most of its characters are teens, the concerns it addresses resonate especially strongly with the young, and yes, it has a powerful message for those approaching adulthood.

Daniel LaRusso (Ralph Macchio) has just moved from New Jersey to California's San Fernando Valley. Almost immediately he falls for rich girl Ali (and considering Ali is played by a 20-year old Elisabeth Shue, who can blame him) which brings him into conflict with a group of bad boy karate students, primarily Ali's ex-boyfriend Johnny, leading to a series of bad beatings for Daniel. As Daniel pithily sums things up, "Problem is, I'm getting my ass kicked every other day." In the real world, police would probably be called and assault charges pressed after some of the stuff these guys pull, but Daniel, young though he is, has that whole manly man, New Jersey tough guy I-don't-narc thing going, so that's a non-option.

One night during a particularly brutal beating, Daniel is rescued and his attackers soundly thrashed by an apparently unlikely savior: the middle-aged Okinawan maintenance man at Daniel's apartment complex, Mr. Miyagi. Miyagi works a deal with the karate student's arrogant, overbearing sensei: his students will lay off Daniel until a karate tournament two months hence, at which time Daniel will face them in the ring.

This leads to some of the most fondly remembered scenes, and unforgettable imagery and dialogue, in the movie as Miyagi begins to teach Daniel unarmed combat skills under the guise of household maintenance chores. "Wax on, wax off" immediately and indelibly worked itself into American pop culture. This has persisted into the 21st Century. Today, and perhaps forever, even people who've never seen this film recognize "Wax on, wax off" and "Mr. Miyagi" has become shorthand for a well-intentioned and highly skilled though somewhat pedantic and obscure person.

What The Karate Kid has going for it, more than anything else, is the chemistry between its two leads. Ralph Macchio and Noriyuki "Pat" Morita both fully inhabit their roles, as a childless father and fatherless child find each other. (Though Daniel's absent father is never explained, I suspect divorce.) Macchio was 22 when he made this movie, believably playing a mid-teen, and showed immense presence and acting chops, by turns brave and scared, stubborn and decent, with a level of good looks and talent that should have led to a more successful career than he eventually had. Pat Morita as Mr. Miyagi is just wonderful, grumping, huffing, spouting aphorisms left and right, and just generally creating an endearing, absolutely unforgettable character. Elisabeth Shue as Ali is amazingly beautiful (and, 20-plus years later, as anyone who's seen Hide and Seek can attest, gives persuasive evidence for the existence of a Fountain of Youth) and her character so sweet and thoroughly decent it's believable Daniel would fight against immense odds to be with her.

The karate tournament sequence is thrilling, although, I do have to say, the less you know about how such events work in the real world the more you'll probably enjoy it. Writer Robert Mark Kamen either knew very little about such things or chose artistic license and drama over strict adherence to fact. For instance, as badly and visibly as Daniel was limping after his knee injury there's no way on God's green earth that tournament officials would have let him compete in the final bout against Johnny. As soon as Johnny did that elbow strike to Daniel's already injured knee, he would have been not only instantly disqualified from the match but banned from the sport entirely. And so on. In this sense we just have to suspend our disbelief and go for it.

Unlike the typical teen movie, The Karate Kid, without being preachy or overbearing, has many things to say. It's about the importance of family, and that we're not limited in family simply to that we're born into - we can CHOOSE our family. It's about finding the courage to stand up for ourselves, both morally and physically. It's about the power of self-discipline and love to prevail in a sometimes violent world.

Director Martin Ritt (Norma Rae) helmed this offbeat romance that earned costar James Garner an Oscar nomination for his portrayal of a widowed druggist who befriends a confused divorcee (Sally Field) and her son, who move to a small rural town to start over. The laid-back performance of Garner as a man finding love "for the last time in his life" contrasts wonderfully with Field's portrayal of a woman scared and unsure of what the future may hold for her, and the two of them together exhibit great comic timing. As well written and as deftly performed as any movie of its type, Murphy's Romance will rope you in with its winning style. --Robert Lane

Great movie. My all-time favorite.

I've seen this movie about 30 times.
Far more than any other that I've ever watched.

Great family viewing.

5 out of 5 stars So Utterly Charming.......2007-09-04

This film is practically impossible to not like. It has likeable but three dimensional characters. James Garner is at his best, earning his only Best Actor Academy Award nomination. Sally Field is almost his equal. All in all this is a wonderful concoction of romance, wooing, charm and your normal run of the mill slice of life. It is really enjoyable and undemanding. One feels good about life after viewing this one. Its message is probably that you can find your true love much later than you thought you would or perhaps again.

4 out of 5 stars Great Movie.......2007-08-28

Sally Field & James Garner together? A great movie.
Sally is a single mom on an adventure, setting out on her, shows what a woman can do to survive!
James Garner can put his shoes under my bed anytime!
A great movie, great for an evening for a girls night out!

5 out of 5 stars Finding Love Where You Wouldn't Expect.......2007-08-14

Emma is a single mother who moves into a small town in Arizona. What I admire most about this character played by Sally Field is her perseverance when things aren't going right - something we all have to have from time to time. She struggles with getting over her ex-husband who keeps popping back into the picture, re-establishing herself in a new town, kick-starting her business and learning to love in a deeper, more meaningful way. She finds love where she wouldn't expect it, and with someone she wouldn't have imagined. Set in an endearing small town, this story, simple and yet interesting, peppered with humor and defining moments, is sure to touch your heart. This movie always leaves me with a good feeling.

5 out of 5 stars Great Fun!!!.......2007-08-16

5 out of 5 stars excellent.......2007-09-16

Loved the movie. It's always been one of my favorites. I think Elvis is great in it.

3 out of 5 stars Want to understand Elvis movies? Start here........2007-08-19

First...and foremost...I'm an Elvis fan, and I mark his 30-year passing with fond memories and deep regret that he couldn't have lived a happier and more fulfilled life.

This is my favorite Elvis movie. I'm a big fan of Julia "Creature From The Black Lagoon" Adams, and the concept of Elvis as a ranch hand on a dude ranch where there are only a couple of other dudes and a whole lot of Elvis-loving women is pretty hard to resist.

That said, I can't think of a single moment in this movie in which "reality" is reflected. Not One.

Even casual Elvis fans know that Col. Tom Parker (NOT a Colonel, NOT a Tom, NOT a Parker...REAL NAME Andreas Cornelis Dries van Kuijk...got FIFTY PERCENT of EVERYTHING Elvis made. From DAY ONE, Elvis was a CASH COW to the Colonel. The movies allowed him to "double dip"...the price of a movie ticket, the price of a soundtrack album...and pay off his gambling debts (the extended engagements at the International Hotel in Vegas during the seventies were also orchestrated by "Colonel Tom" for the same reason).

Like it or not, even though Colonel Tom made bucketfuls of cash for The King, Elvis was a "cash cow" from DAY 1.

Elvis wanted to be an actor, but...as in EVERY OTHER PROFESSION...any move other than a LATERAL move must be earned. A gifted singer is not automatically a gifted actor. A gifted actor is not automatically a gifted singer. And so on...

I guess the dividing line between "Elvis Fan" and "Elvis Fanatic" lies between those who can call him a man who wanted to act and those who consider him a "gifted actor." I fall into the first category.

"Tickle Me" is rife with pre-adolescent tomfoolery and just...plain...BAD...acting. Elvis, Elvis songs, gorgeous women, and ridiculous tripe that makes the worst Frankie Avalon & Annette Funicello movie look like KING---FREAKING---LEAR.

Elvis rips a couple of bluesy numbers...better than the average for an "Elvis Movie"...but if I had to choose between this and the 1968 comeback special, my reaction is ARE YOU KIDDING ME?

Colonel Tom told Elvis to make movies, so he made movies. The purity and carnality and immediacy of the 1968 comeback special was the DIRECT result of Elvis challenging the Colonel...he wanted Elvis to sing "Silent Night" or some such treacle and look into the camera and say "MERRY CHRISTMAS EVERYONE"...and instead we got a black leather Elvis howling "ONE NIGHT WITH YOU..."

And after that he went to Vegas and resumed following "The Colonel's" orders.

You all know that Robert Plant and Jimmy Page offered the services of Led Zeppelin as a backing band to Elvis for a ROCK ALBUM, right? If so, HOW can you watch "Clambake" and "Tickle Me" and "Blue Hawaii" and NOT feel a deep, deep sense of loss?

You all know that Bruce Springsteen got caught trying to jump the gates at Graceland, right? Can you...even for a moment...imagine a rock album from Elvis Presley and the E STREET BAND? CAN YOU???

Click the "review not helpful" button and see if I care. Elvis deserved better. He's been gone for three decades and I mourn his passing.

4 out of 5 stars ABOUT TIME.......2007-07-20

One of his best ever & I never thought it was going to come. I believe this is Elvis at his most natural & "funniest". If only he had been able to pursue his acting abilities his way, this is a glimpse of what he had to offer. A good light hearted movie for all.

5 out of 5 stars Elvis + Jocelyn Lane = perfect match.......2007-07-07

Finally on DVD !!! - I cannot believe that it's taken this long to release this Elvis film ( together with Girl Happy ).
Get's five stars because you get Elvis with his sexiest, most gorgeous ever co-star, plus it's funny, entertaining and has really good songs.
Brings back some great memories from my childhood Saturday matinee days, when I was fascinated with Elvis and he became my hero and idol.
Jocelyn Lane is stunningly, knockout beautiful - she definately made me Girl Happy and want Girls, Girls, Girls.

5 out of 5 stars Great Elvis Movie .......2007-07-07

This is my favorite Elvis movie. Its got ghosts, treasure, and plenty of beautiful girls to include the beautiful Jocelyn Lane. She is soooo hot in this movie. Its a great fun movie with a hit soundtrak.

Product Description

The house rips apart piece by piece. A bellowing cow spins through the air. Tractors fall like rain. A 15,000-pound gasoline tanker becomes an airborne bomb. A mile-wide, 300 miles-per-hour force of total devastation is coming at you: Twister is hitting home. In this adventure swirling with cliffhanging excitement and awesome special effects, Helen Hunt and Bill Paxton play scientists pursuing the most destructive weatherfront to sweep through mid-America's Tornado Alley in 50 years. By launching electronic sensors into the funnel, the storm chasers hope to obtain enough data to create an improved warning system. But to do so, they must intercept the twisters' deadly path. The chase is on!

Twister was a mega-million-dollar blockbuster--helmed by a director (Dutchman Jan de Bont) hot off another scorcher hit (Speed)--that flaunted state-of-the-art digital effects and featured a popular leading actress (Helen Hunt) who would win an Academy Award for her next film (As Good As It Gets). But ask anybody who's seen it and they'll tell you who the real star of Twister is: the cow. Not to give anything away, but the cow is one of those inspired little touches (like, say, Bronson Pinchot's career-making cameo in Beverly Hills Cop) that adds a touch of personality to a gigantic Hollywood production. The story is blown out the window after an impressive prologue in which Hunt's character, as a little girl, witnesses her daddy being sucked into a tornado. Basically, Hunt and Bill Paxton are thrill-seeking meteorologists chasing twisters in order to study them (and help warn people of them, of course) with a new technology they've developed. If you thought the Kansas tornado in The Wizard of Oz was every bit as scary as the Wicked Witch of the West, then this may be the movie for you. --Jim Emerson

3 out of 5 stars Twister, not just a party game.......2007-06-15

Being from the west coast I never had a whole lot of interest in the natural phenomena showcased in this film. Where I live an inch of rain is headline news. I had absolutely no interest in Twister until I saw it was on late one boring night. Having nothing better to do, I obliged the television and payed attention. I found Twister to be what I call a nice bedtime movie. While it failed to anthropomorphize the tornado the way Backdraft successfully did with fire, the characters were well fleshed out, there was a healthy balance of comedy, drama and (at the time) cutting edge special FX. I found that as long as the viewer came in with no expectation, Twister would be a fun and easy to watch nappy time movie, perfect for watching on a rainy day, curled up with a blanket. So to sum everything up, don't expect an epic, emotionally charged extravaganza, but if you are willing to accept a decently woven story with reasonably believable characters, and have a rainy afternoon to kill, check out Twister. You shouldn't be too disappointed.

5 out of 5 stars A game of Twister anyone?.......2007-05-17

The funnest game of Twister I've EVER seen! Good movie, good cast. Watch it miss this house, hit that house, and then come straight for you.

5 out of 5 stars GREAT.......2007-05-14

The movie was great seen it one thousand times, perfect condition and the seller i received my copy from was wonderful. Recommend to anyone who likes Tornadoes.

4 out of 5 stars Twister is about characters........2007-05-14

Sure most of the relationships and characters are one dimensional, but they're still loads of fun. Sure you know what's coming, but it looks really amazing when it gets there.

Twister is an action movie with a little romance and comedy thrown in, but it's really the relationship between the main two characters and the fun dialogue between all that make you want to watch this over and over again.

As for realism, who cares, it's an action movie. But to be fair as unbelievable as most of this looks tornados really can do most of the things that are seen.

Overall, a fun ride.

5 out of 5 stars one of the best disater movies of all time.......2007-05-08

This was one of my favoriote movies I saw grown up in my adolescent years. The story is about Jo a young woman living in the late eigties or ealy ninties who is obbsed with tornado after she saw here father sucked up and killed by and f5 tornado when she was about ten years old. Joining here I Hunt her ex husband and his new wife. The three go on adventures with his storm chaser bodies and tornadoes get bigger and the action more intense as it gets futher into the movie. The second half of the movie after the scene at the out door movie theater gets super intense. Can they survive the twisters and be the first people to take measurements inside there funnel with assitance of four weather machines filled with seansr all nicked named Dorthy. This action packed adventure movie will have you sitting on the edge of your seat and screaming for more. If you like this I also recommend Night of Twister, Volcano, and Earthquake if you can find it. This movie should be fine for 13 and up due to some heavy language and heavy peril scenes for a movie of its time. This movie is worth having regardless of the price. I say about 15 to 30 dollars is a reasonable price to pay for this movie depending on the conditon.

This is an energetic, but ultimately mediocre adaptation of the play, directed on Broadway by Tommy Tune. Burt Reynolds is the town sheriff and a regular patron of a local bordello. He wages a public battle to keep it open after it is targeted as the devil's den by a television minister. Charles Durning was nominated for a Oscar for Best Supporting Actor, and there are some lively song and dance numbers featuring Dolly Parton as the madame of the Chicken Ranch. However, this becomes bogged down in too many serious moments for it to be more than a lightweight musical comedy. --Rochelle O'Gorman

5 out of 5 stars Jolly good 80's musical comedy.......2007-08-15

This has been a favorite of mine since I first saw it around 1986/87, and it still holds it's ground. Not the deepest of movies, but it's very entertaining, with a great cast, and of course it has an happy ending. ;-)

4 out of 5 stars Best Lil Whorehouse In Texas.......2007-06-12

Loved the movie..brought back some great memories from watching it from way back..lol. I even bought it for a friend as a gift.

i bought this tried to send it back as doesnt work but they would not accept

5 out of 5 stars A Surprise from my past.........2007-05-14

I ordered this for my wife, but I knew of it as a kid. I was surprised how entertaining it ended up being. Burt and Dolly really have a chemistry, and for a real church-going country girl, she seems to have an open mind for taking such a risque role. Moments that harken to "true" women's rights, the safety of a whorehouse opposed to the street walker/pimp scenario, even a quip on how un Christian most Christians are. (When Burt is asked why more people are not forgiving like God is, he replies,"Well, I guess most people aren't very God-like." So damned true. I dig this film.

4 out of 5 stars Classic Dolly & Burt.......2007-05-08

Very good adaptation of a musical, and Dolly & Burt are great. Don't think I have ever heard Burt sing before (is it dubbed?).

William Hurt is perfectly cast as an arrogant surgeon who treats patients like interchangeable cogs in the machinery of his medical practice. Then he is diagnosed with throat cancer and, as the title of the memoir on which it is based tells us, he gets a taste of his own medicine. The subplot involves the solidarity between doctors, which is shattered when the newly conscious physician discovers that one of his partners (Mandy Patinkin) is trying to cover up a case of malpractice. Hurt is solid, as is Wendy Crewson as the doctor who treats him and Elizabeth Perkins as a fellow cancer patient. Interestingly, Hurt's fellow actors Patinkin, Adam Arkin, and Christine Lahti all wound up playing doctors on TV's Chicago Hope. --Marshall Fine
