When the farmer's back is turned, the animals party down in Barnyard. A young cow named Otis (voiced by Kevin James, The King of Queens) loves to have fun at the farm's wild late-night hoe-downs, despite the disapproval of his father, Ben (Sam Elliott, Thank You for Smoking). When Ben dies defending the barnyard from marauding coyotes, Otis is chosen as the new leader--but responsibility sits uneasily on Otis' head and he fears he may not be able to protect his friends from the coyotes. Barnyard's design of the cows seems inspired by Gary Larson's The Far Side comics; though the style is simple, the characters are surprisingly expressive. From moment to moment, the movie is reasonably entertaining. The actors--including Courteney Cox, Danny Glover, and David Koechner (Anchorman) as a very menacing coyote--do solid voice work and there are plenty of amusing gags. But as Barnyard gallops towards its end, the combination of cliches (the story is a clumsy reworking of The Lion King), odd choices (the male cows have udders), and lackluster dialogue makes the movie sag. --Bret Fetzer
Description
Moo-ve over, all you pretenders
here are the original party animals - the critters of Barnyard! This laugh-filled, tuneful animated adventure stars Otis (voiced by Kevin James), a carefree party cow. To the consternation of his respected father Ben (voiced by Sam Elliott), Otis is happy to spend his days singing, dancing and playing tricks on humans. But all good things must come to an end, and when Otis is suddenly forced into his father's position of responsibility, the animal antics multiply as he struggles to find the courage and talent to be a true leader. Wild, wacky and "udderly" hilarious, here's a herd of animated pranksters that'll keep you laughing out loud!
Customer Reviews:
Most Entertaining Animated Film I Have Ever Seen .......2007-09-13
I cannot believe how funny, how entertaining this film was, even better than "Cars,' which is an outstanding animated movie. I give it a nod over "Cars" for two reasons: 1 - it's easier to watch being a half-hour shorter at 89 minutes, and 2 - it's even funnier.
This movie, especially in the beginning, provides almost nonstop laughs, the kind that adults would laugh at probably more than kids.. This is adult-funny, but don't misinterpret: there is nothing raunchy in the script. It's not totally innocent, either.
I do wave a "red flag" for small kids. There are a couple of scenes in here that are definitely too scary for little ones. I am referring to a pack of coyotes attacking "Ben," the father character seen early in the movie, and literally killing him. That, and the short funeral scene, are too intense for impressionable kids. Later, the coyotes return a few times, too. Those mothers who complained about their little kids seeing this have a legitimate point.
Nonetheless, for me - and I assume most other adults - the rest of this is pure entertainment, with a little sentiment mixed into the comedy as the main character, "Otis" (voiced by Kevin James) learns to grow up. Otis, however, is one of the funniest characters I have ever seen on film, animated or not. When he and his barnyard pals are partying it up, which is frequently, it's just hilarious. With those parties comes some great music, too. I found myself really into the music, more than on any animated film I have watched (or heard).
And - not only is the music excellent, the visuals are outstanding. The movie is filled with rich, deep colors that are stupendous to view.
Whether you are a teen or a senior citizen, I would think you would get a lot of laughs out of this movie. Some of the best animated films I have ever seen have come out in the past year or two, and I have to believe I'll probably watch this one more times than any of them.
Transgendered Silliness.......2007-09-09
When I saw a trailer for this film I thought I saw something that just could not be so I had to buy it. I was wrong. It was! On a peaceful farm, the animals are more than they seem. When people are asleep they get up on their hind legs, start talking, and generally run things while the humans are asleep. Sam Elliot voiced the father who is the head animal who keep everyone safe and makes sure the humans never learn the truth. Unfortunately his son just wants to party and have fun. Things are pretty good under his reign but what will happen when the son eventually takes over? Well that is just what this story is going to find out.
When the son finds himself in charge he still just wants to have fun and not be responsible. But dangers provided by local coyotes and snotty kids awaken a sense of justice which eventually transmutes into responsibility. But the road is not necessarily an easy one.
So what did I see? Well, Elliot and son (and the guys he hangs out with) are all large-uddered cows! Not bulls. Cows! Eventually two female cows show up in the story (you can tell by the bows on their heads). I loved the story. It was a great coming of age tale and real father/son tale. But the guys are cows and cows are females! In all of the commentaries and actor interviews, no one mentions that the guys in the story have girls bodies. Well, if you can get past this bit of odd biology (my kids know the difference between bulls and cows) then you will see a very good movie. Check it out and ignore the flapping udders.

VERY CLEVER and VERY FUNNY, Sometimes Poignant, Animated Film!.......2007-07-14
Are there some stupidly twisted things in this film? "You Bet!" Is it funny?? MORE "You Bets!"
This is ONE very clever, creative, and totally off the wall "farm film" that will have you on the floor...Trust Me! The levels of humor going on here are wonderful, it is too bad so many people apparently were/are unable to laugh (not only at the world and themselves) but at farm-life, both inside and outside of the barn!!!
It is too bad that people "bash" everything so easily. Yes, udders on a bull, what's wrong with that, for goodness' sake??? This is an ANIMATED film....supposed to be funny,...duh! This is NOT a Life Story, or a Sex Education Film, for Gods' sake...Grow UP, folks! I suppose the same narrow minded people also thought the lady next door with her makeup and curlers wasn't funny either...or the backwards drunkard...too close to home, maybe??? I suppose they did not think cow tipping was funny. And, of course (I forgot to mention) Talking Animals...OMG!
Too bad...they missed all the laughter, and also a WONDERFUL story inside it all, about trying to grow up and be morally responsible...isn't that sad? Check it out for YOURSELF, folks, I think you'll like it. ~operabruin
*PS...there is NOTHING offensive in this movie at all, btw, in case you're wondering.

A spiky animation style and cowboy yodelling give Home on the Range some charisma. A trio of cows--Maggie (voiced by Roseanne, She-Devil), Mrs. Calloway (Judi Dench, Iris), and Grace (Jennifer Tilly, Bound)--hit the high prairie to track down a cattle rustler named Alameda Slim (Randy Quaid, Kingpin) in hopes that the reward money will save their farm. With the aid of Buck, a horse with heroic ambitions (Cuba Gooding Jr., Jerry Maguire), the bovine avengers track the villain to his lair and save the day, to the accompaniment of tunes warbled by k.d. lang, Bonnie Raitt, and Tim McGraw. These songs--composed by Alan Menken (who wrote the music for The Little Mermaid and Beauty and the Beast)--are the movie's strongest element; the characters are largely trumped up to fit a number of weak jokes that reference current pop culture, thus rupturing the movie's Old West world. Still, it looks nifty. --Bret Fetzer
Description
Round up the family and get ready for a whole lotta fun with Disney's hilarious animated comedy HOME ON THE RANGE. It's a "total joy," raves Gene Shalit, The Today Show. When a greedy outlaw schemes to take possession of the "Patch Of Heaven" dairy farm, three determined cows, a karate-kicking stallion named Buck, and a colorful coral of critters join forces to save their home. The stakes are sky high as this unlikely animal alliance risks their hides and match wits with a mysterious band of bad guys. Experience Disney's new moo-vie adventure with spectacular bonus features, stunning animation, and original songs performed by k.d. lang, Bonnie Raitt, Tim McGraw, and The Beu Sisters and written by the Academy Award(R)-winning composer of BEAUTY AND THE BEAST and ALADDIN. It's "good fun for the whole family," declares Leonard Maltin.
Customer Reviews:
REALLY GOOD! IN THE STYLE OF AN OLD LOONEY TUNES CARTOON!.......2007-08-04
I love most of the animated features that have come out in recent years. CGI has come along way, but this film uses hand drawn animation and it is also Disneys last hand drawn animated movie. The characters reminded me a little of Warner Brothers cartoon characters, which is never a bad thing! I thought the film was very entertaining with a very beautiful and vibrant color palette. The DVD transfer is great and there are interesting extras.
I wonder why all the negative hype.......2007-07-31
I was really worried about buying this movie for my grandkids with all the negative reviews I read regarding the movie. But my Grandkids LOVED it and my daughter says the songs are outstanding... she hums them all day long. I give it a double thumbs up if you've got little ones. They call it their cow movie and are not at all offended at Disney's last hand drawn movie.
My kids love it!.......2007-06-29
I don't understand the bad reviews. My 3 kids have watched this over and over. The story involves trains, horses and cows--and lots of laughs. Maggie only farts once or twice, and it is to communicate with the pigs--so what's the big deal.
My kids won't watch the sappy disney love stories like bambi, hercules, peter pan, cinderella, or even snow white---but you get their attention with farms, trains, and cowboys!
Worst. Disney. Animated. Feature. EVER........2007-06-15
HOME ON THE RANGE is rock-bottom Disney animation. It's amazing to believe the studio that produced memorable classics could turn out a movie as bad as this (yes, it's worse than HERCULES and TREASURE PLANET). The wire-thin storyline, which involves barnyard animals on the trail of an outlaw who can hypnotize animals by singing (huh?) is needlessly stretched out for 76 minutes (which is 70 minutes too long) with forced, unfunny gags, frantic but lifeless sequences and lame characterizations. The animation, usually a high point in a Disney feature, is both pedestrian and unappealing to look at. Alan Menken supplies the music, but like the movie, his tunes are banal, insepid, and unappealing, even weaker than his work for HERCULES. Failed Disney cartoons don't have to be this horrific; case in point: THE BLACK CAULDRON and ATLANTIS-THE LOST EMPIRE fell short financially and were flawed, but both movies made an attempt to be something more complex and adult-oriented than typical Disney fare (I actually liked both of those films). This film, on the other hand, is a big step backward, and the hectic, pedestrian execution ultimately cripples it. It's disheartening that this may be the last traditionally animated feature we may see from Disney, and even more unfortunate that they chose to go out with a flop as insidious as this. Uncle Walt would surely turn over in his grave if he found out his studio ever produced this film.
Love It!.......2007-06-13
This is a great movie! Roseanne ought to do more cartoons! Who would have thought she be so good? My son can't watch it enough. He loves the cows and the cowboys. I love when the sarcastic goat calls the little piglets "bacon bits". Too funny!

Teen pop music stars Aly and AJ make their movie debut as two rich and very spoiled teenage girls who experience a radical change in perspective in the Disney Channel original movie Cow Belles. Courtney (Amanda Michalka) and Taylor Callum (Alyson Michalka) have been well provided for by their dairy owning father Reed (Jack Coleman), but have become obsessed with fashion and societal image and lack compassion for anyone but themselves. When the girls' selfish absorption gets out of hand and leads to a kitchen fire, their father demands that they spend the summer working in the company dairy, hoping to instill in them a sense of responsibility and duty. The initially resentful girls quickly find themselves in a very uncomfortable predicament when the dairy unexpectedly runs out of funds while their father is out of the country. Hopelessly at odds with one another regarding the appropriate action and even their own levels of responsibility, the sisters are forced to grow up in a hurry and end up learning more about compassion and responsibility than their father could have ever imagined. Aly and AJ deliver a believable portrayal of stereotypical spoiled rich girls and their hit song "On the Ride" serves as appropriate background music during one scene of the movie. DVD extras include an exclusive alternate ending; a brief behind the scenes featurette in which Aly and AJ comment on their characters, wardrobes and stunts; and two music videos: "On the Ride" and "Rush." (Ages 7 and older) --Tami Horiuchi

The words `Cow Belles' and Alyson Michalka invokes fantasies her in sexy milk maid outfits and rolling in the hay.
Unfortunately `Cow Belles' chooses not to use any of Alyson's resources and falls flat as a boring failure. There are really not entertaining aspects to this film, which is an accomplishment since it starred Alyson Michalka.
The Plot: Aly and AJ Michalka come across like Paris Hilton and Nicole Richie in `The Simple Life' as pop tarts in a small farming community. Their single father the richest man in town owns the local pasteurization plant.
The girls think it will be fun to work at the plant during their father's overseas vacation. But their follies at the factory are not sexy or funny. Instead they are vindictively ridiculed by the envious employees. "Let's face it you and your sister are nothing but a couple of spoiled brats." Not something I recommend saying to your boss's daughters.
Within a matter of days the plant faces a bankruptcy from which it cannot recover. Putting the entire town out of work. It's up to the girls to save the whole town.
Sadly, none of this is entertaining in any way. Even a die hard Alyson fan like me was disappointed. You are warned.
Sweet Heart of a movie.......2007-01-27
This is a great movie for kids, I love the fact I can let My 9 year old watch it without having to worry about content. I enjoy the movie too, has a great message about work ethic, however I'm afraid that may be lost on alot of kids-but we can always hope!
typical junk from disney for material young girls.......2007-01-20
terrible and moronic screenplay and dialog, horrible acting, bad directing with formulaic sound track, mimicking every movement of all the characters just like disney's cartoons. don't why all the movement even expression on the faces of these terrible actors need music to exaggerate or emphasize it. these two young female actors need go back to performing art school to learn the basics or just quit. i strongly suggest that dmv files a complaint to disney for the low blow insult to their driving test people. what a big yawn with teary eyes, i just couldn't help it.
Okay..............2006-12-10
I really like Aly and AJ, but I wasn't too impressed when I saw this movie. It definitely wasn't the worst thing I've ever watched, but it's not worth buying or even watching twice...
Mediocre for TV Movie.......2006-09-06
Made for TV movies are just that, stuff that you would watch for free but you would never pay for.
The plot is simplistic. Aly and AJ are brats (a repetitive disney theme). Dad makes them work. Dad goes on a mysterious trip. While Dad is away, Dad's best friend robs the company, Aly and AJ cause all heck to break lose in the dairy plant - but true sisterhood triumphs over materialism and the desire for a hip prom dress.
The plot is simplistic, paint by numbers, and easy to anticipate. The dramatic conflict is typical superficial disney materialism. One girl loyal to dad seeks paternalistically to save all those really cute working class people - the other girl seeks to be hip for the prom. In the wider context of Disney material with these consistent superficial plots, its disappointing. After a while you have to wonder what message is being sent to your children from disney. According to disney, the height of teenage anxiety is a prom dress. With the greater issues of life - which include the US working class and the widening gap between US corporate rich and the working poor - the disney theme disappoints.
This movie is a well done, made for TV movie. Watch it for free. Dont buy it. But while you are at it, read to your children "Harvesting Hope: The Story of Cesar Chavez " - and explore the real struggle of farm workers.

Kung Pow! Enter the Fist is best enjoyed with low expectations, if only because it might surprise you with genuine belly laughs. Writer-director Steve Oedekerk uses digital trickery to make himself a costar in the 1976 Hong Kong action flick Tiger & Crane Fist, just as Woody Allen turned a Japanese spy thriller into the comedy spoof What's Up, Tiger Lily? The results are both technically impressive and stupendously stupid. Oedekerk is blandly appealing as "the Chosen One," who sets out to avenge the evil Master "Betty" Pain for killing his family when he was still a kung fu-fighting infant. This stock setup is a cheap excuse for Oedekerk's 80-minute buffet of chop-socky spoofery, with gags lifted from The Matrix, Oedekerk's "Thumbation" comedies, and the rich legacy of Hong Kong action. Featuring "gopher-chucks," a kung fu cow, aliens from France, and enough bad dialogue to choke a crouching tiger, Kung Pow! is mildly spicy, but mostly it's full of nuts. --Jeff Shannon
Description
Writer/director Steve Oedekerk (The Nutty Professor and Ace Ventura 2: When Nature Calls) creates an off-the-wall comedy and a new martial arts genre that substantially alters dubbed action footage from a 1970's martial arts picture with a brand new twist in the story line and altered dialogue. The story follows The Chosen One (Oedekerk) as he seeks to avenge the death of his parents at the hands of the evil and seemingly indestructible kung fu legend, Master Pain.

You're going to think you won't like it, but YOU WILL..........2007-06-27
This movie was loaned to me, and the only reason I ever put it in the DVD player was so I could watch enough to return it. A martial arts movie spoof? No thanks. But I was completely in weeds on this one, and it stands now as one of my favorite goofy comedies. You don't have to have even seen a martial arts film or be into the numerous spoofs that are always being released. This movie is funny as a stand alone experience, and even the special features are a hoot. You won't think you want to see this, but if you like comedies in general you'll enjoy this wacky movie.
Funniest Kung Fu Spoof I've Ever Seen.......2007-05-01
This is the funniest Kung Fu spoof I've seen, and that includes the fact I've seen the entire Kung Faux series. Kung Faux doesn't have ANYTHING on this!
This guy bought a kung fu flick and then inserted himself via blue screen (though nowadays they use green screens) technology and redubbed and massacred the entire thing until it became a comedy. And it draws on every single kung fu cliche imaginable; I'm quite a fan of kung fu movies and know even great kung fu movies tend to have cliches. The more into kung fu flicks, the funnier you'll think it is, as in this case familiarity breeds not contempt but laughter. I had to actually pause it several times I was laughing so hard. IMHO even every Stephen Chow flick pales in comparison to the humor factor inherit in this movie...Chow's flicks are meant to have humorous elements, but are not outright spoofs as this movie. Buy this for the kung fu enthusiast in your life (even if its yourself), you will not* regret it!

Some spoofs get it right, and this is one of them..........2006-12-12
If you don't like this movie then simply turn it off, it's not your speed. If you're a fan of films like `Scary Movie' or better yet `Monty Python' then this is a movie for you. Dubbing himself into a 1976 Hong Kong film, Steve Oedekerk gives us one hilarious acid trip of a film complete with quirky dialog and hilarious special effects. Spoofing everything that makes classic Kung Fu films so funny in the first place and adding a touch of modern cinema like a Matrix fighting cow, `Kung Pow! Enter the Fist' delivers laugh after laugh after laugh. So little tonguey may be ridiculous, but renaming the villain Betty was a classic stroke of genius!
Kung Pow is powerfully funny.......2006-12-12
I'm so happy to see all the great reviews for this film. These peeps have great taste and an even greater sense of humor. In a day and age where a movie is considered a hit if it provides two or three laughs, this movie is so refreshing. "Kung Pow" had me laughing from the beginning, the baby roll, to the end, THE FRENCH!!!! I'm not sure if I've ever seen a comedy that had me holding my sides because they hurt from laughter, trying to catch my breath before the next "bit" (which was usually only a few seconds) and almost pissing in my pants. When I saw the movie the 1st time, the theater was almost empty, but you couldn't tell from my laughter. I really embarrassed my dad. I have very few comedies in my DVD collection. That is because most of them have diminishing value, with each viewing the movie is less funny. "Kung Pow!" is the exception to that rule. I've seen it several times and have laughed as much as I did when I 1st saw it. The reason I am writing this is because a few moments ago several scenes from the movie popped into my head, "Call me Betty" and "I'm eeeevvvviiilll, so evil!" and seeing Taco Bell in the village (maybe that's the prob with Taco Bell, they're still using the ingredients they had back then, LOL!). No other comedy has done that, pop up for no reason and get me laughing all over again. Now that I wrote my review, I'm going to buy the film. I wish Steve would do another film like this. One last thing, unlike other films, the outtakes were actually funny as well. Okay weee weee weee folks!

National Lampoon's Van Wilder
ASIN: B00007149R
Release Date: 2002-12-17 |
Amazon.com
This generic sex comedy--about a guy who can't decide whether or not to marry his girlfriend because he's still obsessed with a girl he saw in an airport when he was a teenager--really has only one thing to recommend it: Ryan Reynolds (Coming Soon, Van Wilder). Reynolds plays the main character's horndog friend who becomes convinced he's gay, and while much of his material is of dubious taste and quality, Reynolds has a mixture of ironic detachment and actor commitment that makes the most of his role. Everyone else--Jerry O'Connell (as the obsessed guy), Bridgette L. Wilson (as his understandably frustrated girlfriend), Ron Livingston, Bill Bellamy, and Alyssa Milano--have their moments, but the script doesn't offer them much to work with. When it isn't drowning in clichés about men and women, it's trying way too hard to be "over the top." --Bret Fetzer

Taking the plunge - Biting The Bullet - Tying the Knot - Buying the Cow.......2007-01-06
This movie asks the question: "Why buy the cow when you can get the milk for free?" David (Jerry O'Connell) finds himself under increasing pressure to take the final plunge with his long time girlfriend (Bridgitte Wilson) after his best buddy Tyler becomes engaged. This news wreacks havoc on David's life as he tries to find the answer to the question the movie asks.
This movie is funny, very funny at times and also at times quite stupid, but it is good quality entertainment nonetheless. Ryan Reynolds steals the show unsurprisingly, as Mike, a freind to David and Tyler who is trying to figure out his own problems where he fits in in the world. A scene where he wakes up in a strangers bed after a hugely intoxicating night is absolutely hillarious...
I bought this movie because I am a fan of the young cast, especially Reynolds and also because it is directed by Walt Becker, the same guy who gave us Van Wilder. Fans of that movie will love this, as will all fans of Reynolds and Jerry O'Connell. Anyone else may find it to be 'not their kinda movie'.
(:D) ....ok.......2006-06-11
This movie is sooo funny. Some of the parts will seriously have you rolling. Ryan Reynolds is hilarious and a complete stud!
Funny movie.......2006-03-16
It's a funny movie, and without going in to too much detail I will say, while Alyssa Milano was quite gorgeous, I am very angry the scenes in the menu and on the back of the DVD apparently never actually happen.
Other than that, great movie. Acting is decent, movie is hilarious, the plot is kinda ... weak, but still good.
Comedic but too sexual.......2006-03-05
This movie was very comedic but too sexual for my taste.
The plot was simple. Girl gives guy ultimatuem. Guy trys to find old crush he never met. Girl and Guy get back together but then Guy finally meets old crush and so they live happily ever after.
My fave scene had to be the one with all the dates at the same time. I couldn't help but die laughing. The cast was excellent and there was definately some chemistry between Alyssa and Jerry that should've been explored.
Penny Lane
If you liked Tomcats..........2006-01-13
And I liked Tomcats in all its pure cheesiness, then you too will enjoy Buying the Cow. It is a bit far-fetched, but if you're in the mood for mindless entertainment to take you away after a horrible day of work, this flick will do the trick. Also, if you like Ryan Reynolds, he's hilarious in this. As a side note to the other ladies, you get to see him naked which is always a wonderful plus in my book. He looks gorgeous! Jerry O'Connell's character seems very similar to that of his character in Tomcats, but he's still great fun. Another thing I really liked was how they showed Jerry O'Connell's meeting in the airport with the girl of his dreams from his point of view as well as later on in the film, from her point of view. I thought that was a nice touch. Though certainly quite far from the best movie I've ever seen, for the price (found it in the $5.50 bin at Wal-Mart) it's a great addition to any DVD collection.

L'age D'or.......2007-06-20
The mesmerizing "L'Age D'Or," a collaboration between young Spanish surrealists Luis Buñuel and Salvador Dalí, contains no traditional plot but instead a series of striking dream-like images: a cow on a woman's bed, a large, formal delegation arriving on a barren island for no apparent reason, a vision of fully bedecked cardinals arrayed there on a craggy rock, and amidst all the pomp, a couple rolling around lustfully in the dirt. Billed as a "madman's dream," the film became a scandal, reviled in particular by the emerging Fascist movement. Today, it's revered as a cinematic landmark, skewering what Buñuel saw as oppressive, outmoded societal forces. Pure gold!
Luis Bunuel's L'Age d'Or.......2007-02-09
Old film with the best of visions from Salvador Dali. Softly erotic.
The best off scenes was with the cow in the bed. Because then was very good music made by the cow bels, it was very inovative.
Buñuel, with characteristic perversity, intensified his attack on bourgeois sensibilities..........2006-12-17
Buñuel was one of the greatest of all filmmakers... He expressed a uniquely personal vision of the world through a remarkably self-effacing cinematic style, producing a body of work unparalleled in its wealth of meaning and its ability to provoke and disturb...
The film concerns a couple constantly frustrated by Church and Establishment niceties, as well as their own sexual guilt...
Such plot is structured according to the irrational dream-logic of fear and desire, starting with a 'documentary' on scorpions and working through a series of darkly comic, loosely connected scenes... The film climaxes in outrageous blasphemy, equating the meek figure of Christ with a participant in a murderous orgy in De Sade's 120 Days of Sodom... Unsurprisingly, the work was widely banned...
"In Christian tradition, the Golden Age is identified with Eden." (From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia), .......2006-10-17
I saw "L'Âge d'or" ("Age of Gold") last week (twice, the second time with the commentary) and I am absolutely fascinated by it. As much as "Un chien andalou", Bunuel's first movie (1929) was equally Dali's and his, "L'Âge d'or" which is a sequel to "Un chien andalou" is all Bunuel's even with Dali credited for writing. All Bunuel's favorite themes and subjects have been stored in this relatively short (62 minutes) but still shocking and amazingly sensational film. And as all Bunuel's movies it is a great fun to watch. I think the closest to "L'Âge d'or" is his later masterpiece, "Le Fantôme de la liberté" (1974), another excellent collection of satirical vignettes, dark and comical.
The irony starts in the title of the movie - In the ancient mythology, the Golden Age emphasized the idea of original peacefulness, innocence and harmony in all of nature, including human society. In Christian tradition, the Golden Age is identified with Eden but in the Bunuel's paradise, there is no harmony or happiness and innocent are frustrated and rebellious by all kinds of obstacles, social and religious that prevent them from fulfilling their desire for each other ((favorite Bunuel's subject that he would explore over and over in his following films). There are many disturbing and shockingly violent images in the paradise created by Bunuel's fantasy; one is Lya Lys's face when she is sucking on the marble toe of the Greek goddess's statue desperately waiting for her beloved with whom she is never able to be together. It is agony and ecstasy which have not been matched on the screen since. The frustration and anger that always go together with Bunuel's unique humor culminate in the final attack on the organized religion of such vicious and darkly comical power, that the toothless and harmless "Da Vinci Code" could only dream about. The last episode contains the long quote from the infamous "120 Days of Sodom" by Marquise de Sade and the scandal as well as the dark humor is in the way some characters are presented in the scene. No surprise that the movie was banned for over fifty years. Made over 70 years ago, "L'Âge d'or" is still deliciously fresh, completely realized, outstanding work of one of the best and mysterious Masters of the Art of Cinema.
4.5/5
Outstanding.......2006-01-11
Although L'Age D'Or is around three times as long as Bunuel and Dali's earlier film, Un Chien Andalou, I find this almost three times as entertaining as well. That's not to say Un Chien Andalou is boring either, L'Age D'Or is simply a brilliant work of cinematic surrealism. It wasn't nearly as provocative as I expected, except for a few scenes, but that isn't necessarily a bad thing. A must-see for those interested in surrealism and classic or cult cinema.
As for the actual dvd...I paid $25 for it, and although it was worth it, I feel Kino could have provided better packaging at the very least. Worth it either way, though.

4.5 Stars. Director Billy O' Brian is someone to keep an eye on. Fangoria's video of the month does not dissapoint........2007-09-12
In the September issue of Fangoria Magazine in the Video Eye of Dr. Cyclops section, Dr. Cyclops gives Isolation 3 1/2 eyeballs out of four and makes this film his video of the month selection and deservedly so. I highly recommend this to horror fans looking for something new.
The plot synopsis on the dvd jacket almost made this seem like it could be ridiculous and go over the top and get some laughs, instead the film and director take the material completely serious and actually attempt to scare the viewer with this film.
The setting for Isolation is just that an isolated farm in the cold boggy region of Ireland's countryside. The farm is owned by Dan played by John Lynch who is a no b.s Irishmen that looks a little like an older version of Luke Wilson. For extra money Dan allows scientific fertility experiments to be done on his cows by a doctor and the local vet Mary who we are to assume there is a history between Dan and her. These experiments are obviously not supposed to be taking place so what better place then Dans Isolated farm.
Earlier in the day Dan approaches two transients Jamie and Orla who are lovers and who parked there vehicle outside of Dan's farm, Dan harshly tells them to be out by morning, as nobody is to know what is taking place. However later in the night Dans cow goes into labor and with his phone down he needs to rely on these strangers for help and they do rise up. And Something goes terribly wrong with the calf.
In horror films there are a few negatives that can happen with character development either there isn't much therefore when something happens to our victims it is less shocking because we as viewers really don't care, know them or really like them hence the scares don't cut deep. Second the film takes most of the movie to develop the characters and the fans looking to be entertained with some carnage and gore get about 20 minutes of that usually at the end. In Isolation we like these characters, they seem totally real and could be any of us, things are implied of the characters but there are no in depth explanations or detailed back stories, the director is confident his viewers can fill that in themselves. So, subtly and slyly we get to know the characters and we care or are shocked if something happens to them, and these aren't well known actors where it's simply a shock if a movie star get s killed off early it's a shock because we don't want them to die.
So from the first five minutes we are taken in, as when the veterinarian sticks her hands up the cows canal to check on the test fetus she is bitten by the fetus which we learn later is pregnant itself! So horror wise we get our gore intertwined with these believable characters which can be attributed to solid acting performances all around.
To recap Billy O' Brian does a fantastic job directing solid talented actors with a sense of urgency and an incredible real feel and good atmosphere. We feel somebody has really messed up and something bad is going to happen and we care. With some scares left to our imagination but no lack of jumps, and blood, and gore. And a actually freaky creature keep an eye nearing the end when Orla is crawling through to find the creature and the figure we see lurking in the dark just ahead of her.
The scientist messes with mother nature and the experiment goes terribly wrong, now what is out there on this dark farm? What would happen if it were to get out? What happens if you get bit by one of these things? And What if someone that is bit has sex later on, and seeing it can splice with human dna what would happen to said person if they were to get pregnant and would there baby be normal? You'll have to watch and see.
Again, highly recommend to horror fans looking for something new to watch.
Real horror.......2007-08-05
No mad killers! No crazy scientists! No demons rising from Hell! What were they thinking? This is a nice film that has some common folk trying to deal with something they don't understand and can't control. They react well to the situation. When I say well, I mean they react the way you might expect people to react. They are scared and confused. They are not a bunch of McGivers who come up with brilliant solutions. The scenario is science fiction with some kind of creature replicating itself inside cows and passing their off spring on to human hosts. In a way it does kind of become kind of standard fare in the last half hour of the film when they have to come to grips with the creature, but for the most part the focus of this film is the tension the various characters feel. There also is a spirit of humanity overcoming prejudices here, as not everyone welcomes the squatters who play a big part in the movie. The scene where the local constable advises the farmer to send the visiting couple on their way is very well done. The constable is obviously reflecting the prejudice of the locals and it seems cruel, but he does it so naturally that it almost seems right. His hate is in the right place if that makes any sense. Then there is tolerance on the part of the farmer and acceptance and then cooperation. This film works on a couple different levels, but most of all it works as just a dark, creepy horror flick that is very well done without big budget special effects. I would recommend a viewing of this to anyone.
Mad Cow Disease looks like a good thing compared to what's on Dan's farm.......2007-07-14
"Isolation" has one of the more unusual hooks for a horror film you are ever likely to see. Dan (John Lynch) is running a remote (one might even say isolated) farm out in the Irish countryside, and he is worried about one of his cows that is about to give birth. So he calls up the town veterinarian, Orla (Essie Davis), who checks on the fetus by putting her arm, up to the elbow, into the cow. Then she gets bit, are first clear sign that something is not right on Dan's farm. It turns out that in an effort to make ends meet Dan has allowed his cattle to be part of a research project that wants to increase fertility and beef production as well. Just as it starts to look like the project is going to produce results, the cows gives birth to an unusual calf. For starters, the calf is born pregnant, and if you are suddenly reminded of the Tribbles from "Star Trek," you will not be alone, but you will be on the wrong track.
The risk is not just mutant monsters, but the threat of contagion, which at least resonates with memories of the threat of Mad Cow disease. Joinging the farmer and the vet are a geneticist, John (Marcel Iures) who gets to provide necessary explanations and explosition (plus being the most obvious victim for the beasties), and a young couple, Mary (Ruth Negga) and Jamie (Sean Harris), who are avoiding their parents by hiding out on Dan's farm. Now squatting will be the least of their problems since fooling around with Mother Nature always has disastrous results in horror movies.
The upside of this film is that director Billy O'Brien knows how to film a horror movie and to take advantage of the dark and dirty farm setting. The opening sequences does a nice job of setting the mood, which matters because this is a movie about killer cows. The downside of this film is that in the last half it is basically "Alien" with cows, not that there is anything wrong with that (Although my mind immediately went to the Howard The Duck story, "Hellcow," that appeared in "Giant-Size Man-Thing" #5, which involved a bovine vampire, complete with the cape). But as the movie goes along and gets less original and more derivative, it becomes less effective. I ended up rounding up on this DVD because it includes an earlier short work by O'Brien, "The Tale of the Rat That Wrote." Do not attempt to connect the dots begween this short and the featured film, just enjoy this DVD bonus.
Interesting sci-fi horror.......2007-06-28
As a previous reviewer has mentioned, there have been some pretty good offerings in the horror genre from Britain [The Descent]and yes, Ireland recently and Isolation is definitely worth a watch. The setting is a rural farm somewhere in Ireland I presume, and the cast of characters [human that is] is made up of Farmer Dan, a female vet, a scientist, and a young couple, Jamie and Mary [who are on the run from Mary's disapproving brothers]. The premise: the farm is the setting for a biogenetics experiment, and a cow births a genetically mutated calf...the rest of the story deals with the repercussions of this event. Though the plot seems rather simple, the story moves at a steady but suspenseful pace and the stalking of the prey [the humans & other cows on the farm] by the predator makes for compelling and scary viewing. Though there is some allusions to other movies like Alien, The Fly etc...I still found it to be quite an enjoyable and intelligent sci-fi horror flick that is worth a watch. The acting was credible and the effects sufficient in evoking a menacing atmosphere.
Kudos and four stars. This is a fun scare ride that delivers the goods!.......2007-05-12
The United Kingdom is evidently doing something right when it comes to horror. Over the past few years the UK has produced some terrific scare fests including the recent WILDERNESS and the international hit THE DESCENT; Isolation proves to be no exception. A taut well crafted horror thriller, the story is small, intriguing, and taughtly paced, the atmosphere rich, and palpable. Genetic mutation movies aren't really my thing; I'm not rabid about Sci-Fi or "mad scientist playing with nature" themes. However, Isolation balances these elements with an interesting blend of horror and human nature, is well filmed, and does quite a bit out of very little. The film isn't broad, doesn't flesh out it's characters a great deal nor bother to explain many things. Nonetheless, its riveting and manages to truly invoke a feeling of dread and yes, isolation.

Jack's Beanstalk.......2007-08-05
Probably not many people have seen this movie, but once you have - you will never forget it. A very unique version of Jack & the Beanstalk that I highly recommend viewing. Especially if you're a fan of the 1960s-70s Japanese after-school cartoons!
Good old fashion animation! .......2007-06-27
I have loved this movie since I was a kid and it's good that it finally came out on DVD. Let's be real if you saw this animated version of "Jack and the Beanstalk" the Disney and other B versions are garbage! The songs are great and easy remember, it has a tween twist to it, so the language is not adult but rather closer to early adolescents. How often do you see a dog like Crosby that is so laid back and loyal? Crosby and Jack make this movie! So if you're sick of the current trends in Anime, take a look at an older version of Anime. There are plenty of entertaining songs for kids and lots of funny moments for the adults.
Anime Jack and the Giant.......2007-05-13
I remember watching this as a kid back I don't know how many years ago and seeing it from time to time on cable when you had decent quality programming. Now it's back again for those who remember this version on DVD. Kinda makes me wish that various films from this era (i.e. - Animalympics) would make it to DVD to be preserved in a better format.
The storyline is basic,....not hard to follow but it is wierd here and there. The evil mother / witch (Heccuba) is almost like a robot with that human trait. I'm giving a spolier when her giant, ogre-like son, Tulip crushes her at the end. Certain scense and the musical score are almost Pink Floydian (ummm....Pink Freudian???? lol) here and there....but overall it is a great watch for the fans of this film as well as those who are young at heart. I've noticed some other people making comments and indicating that really young kids shouldn't watch it for it may be....well...too trippy. But that is done out of pure discretion.
However,...if you have watched this....and are a fan of it....get it. You won't regret it.
Wonderful memories.......2007-05-13
I first saw this movie when my daughter was a young girl. I would rent it, and we would sit together and watch it over and over until I had to return it. Then one day I couldn't find the video. Years passed, and one day I happened to be thinking about it and decided to check Amazon. To my delight, they had it for sale. I purchased the DVD and surprised my daughter (now 24) with it. She was thrilled. We have both watched it several times already.
In a word, bizarre!.......2007-03-29
This film stayed with me since childhood, and like the reviewer below, I couldn't find any mention of it on IMDB, Amazon or anyplace else. And now here it is, in all its DVD goodness - and what a thoroughly strange film it is, too. I couldn't believe how much of it came back to me as I watched - it must be 25 years since I saw it last.
This is a very strange take on the standard tale. Jack is an impulsive, impudent kid who has to learn not to be selfish, with a very funny dog who fancies himself a military man. A creepy, possibly kiddie-fiddling musician with an electric organ tricks Jack into buying the magic beans, which grow overnight in a gorgeous sequence. The giant is a hulking beast called Tulip, and his mother is an evil, normal-sized witch who treats him so badly you almost feel sorry for him. There's an enchanted Princess, people turned to mice, a talking harp, a golden chicken, and some paper cut-out people...
The songs are mostly terrible, and yet weirdly compelling - especially the Pink Floyd-ish music for climbing the beanstalk and the ghostly wedding song. "Are you happyyyy?" Many sequences in the film are surreal, even psychedelic, and there's a strange undercurrent of Freudian unease in the relations between Jack and the Giant and their harsh, controlling mothers. The animation is pretty good, with some very nice backgrounds. The Princess has a proto-anime look to her.
I'm not sure I can recommend this film to kids or not, to be honest. It's weird and unsettling, and there's a terrible scene early on where Jack recieves a lengthy beating with a broom. Then again, kids don't pick up on a lot of stuff that raises adult eyebrows. For anybody who vaguely remembers it or is into funky kid-vids, it's a good party video. Parents, you might want to watch it first before showing it to the kids. But hey, it didn't freak me out. Much.
SPOILER WARNING: The image of the giant smashing his wicked, emasculating mother and finding only clockwork inside has haunted me for years.
