Alvarez Kelly (1966) isn't really a classic, but it's a pleasant enough Western, directed by Edward Dmytryk. The rather convoluted plot (adventurer plays one side off against the other on a cattle drive from Mexico during the Civil War) relies heavily on the charm of the two stars, William Holden and Richard Widmark, but the two prove as reliable as ever. There are some so-so action scenes, but it's the battle of wits between the two principals that supplies all the fireworks. By contrast Janice Rule is just adequate as the love interest. --Ed Buscombe

5 out of 5 stars For Cows and Country.......2007-09-12

This is a study on contrast. On one side is one man, the mercenary foreigner profiting from the evils of the worse disaster in American history, its civil war. One man will do all and anything for a dollar. The other is the dedicated patriot continuing to do his part in delaying the inevitable disaster at a cost beyond that of his own life and limb, literally. And yet, both men, played flawlessly by William Holden and Richard Widmark respectively, go through the motions carrying other baggage, the sting of racism, subtlety handled by Holden's commentary on his Mexican father; and the sacrificed love of Widmark, whose pain is that of a man loyal to the woman he loves, even to the extent of sacrificing his own desires. The scene of the torture of Holden in a prison cell, where horror is plain in the face of Holden, without more comment; and the revenge of Holden when he becomes the man who takes Widmark's love away from him are extraordinary. Violent, harsh situations, contrasting love, dedication to ones country and the futility of war. Worth watching to understand the extent to which humans can degrade themselves and how self sacrifice and loyalty can bring redemption. A ramake of this movie today would probably be in Iraq and called "Oil and Foil." Maybe not.

5 out of 5 stars mature western.......2007-02-25

Wonderful adult adventure story with a story that reaches beyond its genre, mixed with subtle humor,an anti-war and anti-hero message, with just enough violence to make it real without making you sick, but no gratuitous sex to help keep the focus of the average 3 1/2-minute attention span. All with a cast that doesn't remind you of your Grade 13 High School class.

4 out of 5 stars A movie worth watching.......2006-03-20

Definitely a good Civil War Western, Alvarez Kelly, brings to the screen the story of an American cattle rancher from Mexico who has been hired to deliver a herd of steers to Union troops taking part in military operations during the late stages of the American Civil War. Things get a bit complicated when the Bluebellies decide that they want the livestock sent to General Grant's army (which is laying siege to Richmond) deep in Grayback territory, instead of the pre-arranged rendezvous point.
The cast carry out their performances very well, though neither the actor, William Holden, nor his character, Alvarez Kelly, are all that wonderful.
Moreover, the title for the movie is not really that great, and the dialogues could have been better too.
Nevertheless, the plot, the setting, the battles and the costumes are all excellent.
Alvarez Kelly brings to life the American Civil War and those desperate moments before the fall of Richmond and the collapse of the Confederacy.
For other wonderful Westerns I would strongly recommend The Outlaw Josey Wales, Major Dundee and The Undefeated.

3 out of 5 stars My Dad Probably Loved this Movie.......2005-01-18

He loved all the westerns! But this one has Holden & Widmark! Not only are their scenes together a blast but Holden's scenes with Richard Rust as Sgt. Thatcher made me smile - especially when Rust was Holden's "watchdog!" Not a bad storyline, probably because it really happened, a true story, and there are no dull moments. This is one of those films that you'll just have to take out of the box again some rainy Saturday when you want to remember how fun the 60s were, and our favorite actors of the 40s-50s were making their last cool movies.

4 out of 5 stars Alvarez Kelly, revisited.......2002-04-08

Its funny how (to me) lines from movies sometimes bubble to the surface of consciousness from out of nowhere. I hadn't thought about "Alvarez Kelly" in years. Recently, in my minds's eye, I recalled the image of an eye-patched Confederate leader named Col.Tom Rossiter,(Richard Widmark) silently and solemnly inquire "Did you please her.....Kelly"? That simple line was so fraught with innuendo and suggestion that it always stuck with me. So on a rainy Sunday afternoon, I popped a widescreen version of "Alvarez Kelly" into my DVD and sat back to review and enjoy this 1966 Civil War oater (or should I say "beefer")? It was a decent ride. Alvarez Kelly (William Holden) enjoys pursuing the finer things in life, his earthly habits subsidized in part by trading as a cattle speculator or war profiteer depending upon your point of view. In this capacity, he has no particular loyalty to the North or the South. However, and as the opening credits point out, all armies in all times require food as well as armaments to prevail. As the Yankees and the Confederates fight for control over Kelly's 2500 head of cattle, he is unwillingly forced to provide his services to the boys in Gray. This fact in no way serves to curb his rather prodigious libido, and he continues the shameless pursuit of any woman who has the slightest physical beauty. Released in the mid-Sixties, Bond mania was in full swing and I would argue that this film was influenced by and shared some obvious similarities in attitude and tone with agent 007. Anyway, enter Liz Pickering (Janice Rule), the shapely but long suffering intended of Rossiter, a physically diminished yet gallant and honorable leader of the Southern cause. Liz is instantly drawn to Kelly's virility and earthly ways and inevitably, favors are shared. Her rather brief on screen appearance only serves to provide a convienient source of personal friction between Rossiter and Kelly. Inevitably though, the war intrudes and a battle for control of the cattle looms. Kelly, awarded with a battlefield commission takes charge of a desperate situation in his own unique way. The cinematography of this film is crisp. The strong performances by Holden and Widmark really play off each other well. All in all, this Western is elevated a notch or two above the average because of Edward Dmytryk's solid direction, an acceptable musical score although they could have lost the hokey song at the beginning, decent photography, good character actors, an interesting premise and manages to deliver all this in under two hours. Given contemporary standards, I can't help but wonder how Hollywood would handle a randy character like Kelly today.

5 out of 5 stars Powerful, emotional, stops you dead in your tracks!.......2003-01-26

Not knowing what to expect, I purchased this film becasue I've been a fan of Michael Rodrick's for some time now. If I thought I knew his before from his other work, or I thought that 'The Godfather' was a blood and guts movie, I was wrong. They had nothing on this film.

The acting was fantastic, from the begnning through the end of the film. Even though you knew where the film was taking you, you couldn't move. You HAD to watch.

Great great film.

5 out of 5 stars A Must See Movie!!!!.......2002-11-23

Under Hellgate Bridge is a must see movie! If you like the Sopranos then this movie is right up your alley. Some of the Sopranos guys play it it including "Big Pussy" and "Uncle Junior". The movie was great, it had an excellent story, and I myself have purchased the DVD and will be watching it again and again. This movie deserves 5 Stars!!!! An A+ Movie!

4 out of 5 stars Great independent effort.......2002-10-31

For those of you who insist this film used the Sopranos cast as a ploy to get people to watch it, you need to take a look at when Hellgate was actually made. While it was released much later (due to financial reasons, coupled with the fact that it was distributed in-house) the film was actually shot nearly two years earlier. This just happened to coincide with the Sopranos' popularity, but it was a mere coincidence.

Regarding the film itself, it's gritty, it's powerful, and it reminds me alot of some early Scorcese films.

It is refreshing to see that this style of filmmaking still exists in today's blockbuster shoot-em-up digital crap films.

4 out of 5 stars What to do with that ten bucks.......2001-09-28

Obviously, the person that suggested saving your ten bucks was reviewing the film according to the Sophranos. This isn't the Sophranos. This is an independent film that doesn't even have a quarter of the production money the Showtime series has -- and it turned out great! The actors and actresses in this film brought the characters to life, gave them a demension that people that literally live near Hellgate Bridge can relate to. They were real, not the flashy hollywood glamour characters that would have ruined this film. I say buy this film and some popcorn with that ten bucks and watch it just for it's entertainment value, not comparing it to another show :)

1 out of 5 stars Save your 10 bucks.......2001-05-19

Most of the people who were drawn to the theatre to watch this movie came on the basis of the soprano's cast members who appear in the movie. However, do yourselves a favor and go see Shreck instead. The movie is low budget with quite bad acting as well. The sopranos cast members only have minor roles in this flick, and its obvious they were used as a ploy to get people to come watch the movie.

Not merely a description of corpulent character Pruitt Taylor Vince, the title refers to the leaden atmosphere hanging over a roadside café and its inhabitants. Writer-director James Mangold finds significance in the details of life, giving this touching story an authenticity that keeps us involved. Liv Tyler brings poignancy to the story as a college dropout who helps awaken the introverted and depressed Vince. Unfortunately, this fascinating character study is too often undermined by direction slow enough to be leaden. Happily, even the most stolid camera work cannot undermine the desires and insecurities of the main character, a man yearning for a full life but too afraid too take a chance. --Rochelle O'Gorman

Customer Reviews:

2 out of 5 stars I am fat ma! .......2005-10-03

Watching Heavy only confirmed the idea that director James Mangold may be suffering from Attention Deficit Disorder. He needs medication or at least the ability to complete a thought before he tries to ramble us through another emotional sentence. Heavy could have been a very complete and emotional film using some raw talent that prior to this had never been explored. There could have been a very strong story developed behind Pruitt Taylor Vince's character of Victor instead of the inconsistent scenes that I witnessed. Liv Tyler could have honestly stepped up in the Hollywood atmosphere on this film alone, if she would have just attempted to take one small chance and go outside of herself. The same could be said for both Shelly Winters and Deborah Harry, who just never felt anything more creative than a walking cliché. Mangold had the power in his hands to really set the stage on fire, but instead we are forced to watch a very inconsistent, obscure, and emotionally voided film that tries to tackle too many issues, without solving any in the long run.

I initially envisioned Heavy's story line to be about a man, concerned about his weight, being the outcast member of society. At first, and at brief intermittent moments of the film, that was the case, but something changed as the other characters were introduced. Liv Tyler became a disturbing obsession instead of a passionate, yet simple, love for Victor. There are scenes in which Vince thinks that he sees a dead Callie walking through his house or even floating in a puddle, but alas, they are only daydreams. Why were they daydreams? What was the overall relevance of these scenes? Was it to show a different side, a troubled side, to Victor, or was it merely used to confuse the audience? I thought that perhaps she was representing Victor's mother, but even that was stretching a bit. It was moments like this that really brought a speed bump into this film. There were other scenes similar to this one that really pulled us away from the central focus of the film, the growth of Victor. The encounters with Leo seemed forced, and the clichéd and random sexual advances of Delores seemed to come out of left field. The moments between Victor and his mother didn't even feel real. I felt as if Shelly Winters was speaking from a cue card instead of her heart. There was one emotional scene where it felt as stale as cardboard, yet it was supposed to evoke tears. Pathetic. I felt at times that Mangold had one of those "Choose your own plot books" and just randomly flipped through it during this film.

Outside of random plot interjections coming at you from every angle (quite distractingly), there was some decent acting from our lead character Victor played by Pruitt Taylor Vince. Vince was able to bottle up the emotions of the situations around him very well, the twitching eyes was not something that I thought helped build his character (was that a acting trait or actually Vince's eyes), while the stress eating moments did seem very human. Vince is a strong actor. He is typically cast as the psycho in most films, but I thought in this film he did stretch his wings a bit. It wasn't far, but he brought compassion and emotion to a very forgettable character. He is the only one worth watching in this film, while the rest of the cast just hurt the film further. Liv Tyler has trouble acting. She talks about never taking an acting class before, and in this film you can tell. She brought nothing new to the screen. The connection between her and Vince was non-existent. There was no chemistry, no power, nothing that made me really see a love between the two. These two have a very silly match.

Outside of the acting and the zigzag plot, there was not much else going for the film. The music was a tease. There were some scenes where you would have Vince walking along the road, powerful, emotional, and together, and the music would suddenly change. Either it was poor editing or just bad music placement, but it seemed to be jumping just as much as Vince's eyes. It made me cringe in my seat. I just get extremely worked up about films that claim to be an emotional powerhouse of an independent film, yet it feels like crayons were used instead of the power of the paintbrush. Again, Mangold had a great film under the surface of all this muck, but it just wasn't worth wading through to get to.

Overall, I was not impressed with this film. If Mangold would have stayed the course, kept us glued to Vince's powerful character, and developed him using the other minor characters around him, than I think it would have been a winner. If Liv Tyler would have been a stronger central character and perhaps stepped outside of her lines, than we may have had a winner. If the point would have been to show a weak man overcome the boundaries of his life, than I think we would have had a winner. Instead, we are left with unattached moments that come from left field and walking cardboard characters that spit cliché lines into the sky instead of to the viewers. Heavy had so much potential, one can only blame Mangold for all these disasters. Skip it. Have yourself a big pizza and watch some Chris Farley films. Now, there was a big guy that was random, but could at least hold a script together!

5 out of 5 stars Emotionally devastating.......2005-01-07

There are really only a few movies that attempt to portray realistic characters going about everyday life in all its ecstasy and agony, and even fewer that succeed in being genuine. Heavy is one of them, and on that score it probably gets my vote for the best film depiction of what unrequited love actually feels like. The level of emotional intensity that James Mangold achieves is blistering, as in the scene where Victor retreats to the storeroom and breaks up after the death of his mother, or the ending where Liv Tyler confronts him in the restaurant after he's smashed several dishes. Unlike other "realistic" indie films that concern a mismatched pair (I'm thinking of Garden State or the overrated Lost in Translation), the relationship between Victor and Callie is entirely believable- so much so that at times the film is almost painful to watch. This is due to the fact that the characters themselves ring true, and for this everyone from Pruitt Taylor Vince to Liv Tyler and Shelly Winters should be commended for their spot-on performances. James Mangold also manages to inject a little hope at the end without resorting to Hollywood cliches. It's difficult to find this movie, but I would certainly say it's worth seeking it out. Parts of it will stay in the back of your mind for years, as has happened with me.

5 out of 5 stars poigant story that was well told.......2004-11-16

Despite some heavy handed camera work, this film shines. The acting by the lead character (Pruitt) was outstanding as was the other characters played by Liv Tyler, Deborah Harry and Shelly Winters. The story backdrop is a small nothing town and shows broken lives and failed chances. Enter Liv Tyler who appears in a bar applying for a job. Shelly Winters is the owner and mother of Pruitt - her overweight balding son with a roving eye but a good heart. The other waitress (Deborah Harry) is none too happy with the addition of a beautiful young woman. The resident drunk doesn't seem to care. Besides Liv Tyler's boyfriend, who we don't really see too much, this is it for characters and most of it takes place in the bar yet we barely notice as we are absorbed into the story that unfolds before us. Predictably, the son falls in love with the new waitress but he never takes a chance because he has already figured out how it would end. Yet the waitress' life isn't as golden as one would think. We see glimpses into each character's life and depressing doesn't begin to cover it. In spite of moments in each character's life that reflect a brillance, they are unable to see it for themselves. They are too caught up in the misery of their day-to-day existence and it would take too much effort to break free. At one point the son tries to change and we see hope for the first time burning in his eyes but it's built on lies and we see the consequences....... It's as if you give up on life, life pretty much passes you by and gives up on you - AND the results are there on screen serving as a warning. Either that or the filmmaker hates small towns and thinks you need to leave to get a better life. The whole mood of this movie is heavy but the sentiment and lush characterization made this movie worth it - repeat viewings even! A little gem of a movie which prompts me to look for later films by this director.

3 out of 5 stars Shelly Winters is Alive in 1995?.......2004-09-07

This is a poignant film that takes place somewhere in upstate New York. Shelly Winters is on her last legs and she runs Pete & Dolly's, a roadside food and beer joint. Her slow-witted, overweight son, Victor is a terrific cook. The regulars are tired and drunk. The waitress is a loser with guys. Liv Tyler shows up in the glory of her youth and changes the stale dynamics. She immediately infatuates Victor.

James Mangold directs and some of his family members help out in this small production. The film and sound are fine and there's a professional look without glossy studio values. Another words, this is a fine independent film made for peanuts because a lot of people believed in the director's vision. Amazing these things ever get off the ground.

I did wonder about half way through the picture if Victor was going to do something yucky with sensitive Liv Tyler, but it's not that kind of picture. Victor doesn't exactly have sex with anyone. This film is a slice of fascinating life. It runs a little slow and possibly it was too long for most audiences. Hell. I didn't know Shelly Winter's was alive in 1995.

3 out of 5 stars Heavy for sure..........2004-01-29

The title doesn't merely point to the size of the central character, but also to the entire atmosphere of the film. I had to watch this movie a few times to fully appreciate its subtleness, yet I was intrigued even upon my first viewing.
While the central plot revolves around the "heavy" character, the story seems to more so be about Liv Tyler's character and her coming of age in a none-too-friendly environment. While her character does at times seem a bit too contrived and archetypical, you do find yourself nonetheless interested in her fate. In the same vein, you want to know the history of the Debbie Harry character. I was apalled and intrigued at the same time by her performance as a ... waitress. Excellant casting there.
i really appreciate the fact that the film makers never tried to make you feel TOO sorry for the title character. he is gross and close to being a stalker... yet you "get" him and his motivation. you almost root for him, until... I don't want to give too much away, but by the end you are truly asking, "what the...?!". I can't know why this character would behave as he did, but I am guessing that is the point of the film. Or at least I'd like to think so.
Watch the movie... maybe a couple times. It is worth the time and quite possibly a spirited conversation with your fellow viewers afterwards.

The winsome and underappreciated Catherine Keener plays Amelia, an unattached New York City cutie living uncomfortably in the shadow of her best friend Laura (Anne Heche). But Laura has problems of her own--including professional insecurities and dwindling sexual interest in her nice-guy fiancé. Not by any means a sidesplitting Generation X comedy, Walking and Talking is the sort of film that relies on bittersweet irony to generate sympathy for its characters. Director Nicole Holofcener leans heavily on the intrinsic pathos, alienation, and insecurity of young adulthood, employing the obligatory well-screened answering machines, meaningless telephone relationships, and lonely nights of video rentals to make her point. Without question, Holofcener should have spent more time elaborating the relationship between her characters--we're never sure why they put up with each other, or why any of them became friends in the first place. We're shown the dysfunctional side of these relationships, but never given a reason to understand them as anything other than hopelessly compromised. Nevertheless, the performances (particularly Heche's) are always heartfelt, the writing is bright without resorting to cleverness, and almost every scene strains admirably for meaning and resonance. --Miles Bethany

My friend and I watched the movie together while eating homemade popcorn. The popcorn was better than the movie. Not that it wasn't acted out well, but neither of us found it very funny. We were in the mood for humor. It was billed as "Wildly Funny!" on the cover. But sorry to say, there was more pathos than there was humor, and we were disappointed.

We worked backwards to get to this debut 1996 effort by director Nicole Holofcener. Lukewarm reviews aside, we really enjoyed her latest effort "Friends With Money." And, "Lovely and Amazing" is superb. As a result of those two pleasant viewing experiences, we rented "Walking and Talking." Holofcener's trademark are her natural, course-of-live screenplays which result in actors who don't seem like they're acting. You feel like you could know these people. Of course, when you've got Catherine Keener (the centerpiece of the three films) to deliver your lines, that certainly adds a lot of credence to your efforts. In "Walking and Talking," it's a treat to see early efforts by Keener and by Liev Schreiber, in his first meaty role.

charaters were somewhat strange about their choices and relationships. but i guess that's what makes it dating.

4 out of 5 stars Superior Romantic Comedy.......2005-09-24

A small movie but a note perfect one. Terrific acting from all 4 leads and a stellar support from Kevin Corrigan as the video guy. I found the core Heche/Keener friendship utterly believable - it's a real pity Holofcener hasn't been able to work more, she showed a great eye and ear here (if I owned a movie studio, I'd offer her a long-term contract to make one of these relatively cheap sorts of movies each year for the next five years - actors crawl over broken glass to do this sort of stuff!). Soundtrack mainly by Billy Bragg is *wonderful*. Maybe Holofcener could entice him to get back to that classic Bragg late 80's guitar sound on some new project?

All told, W&T is much better than, say _Kissing Jessica Stein_ or any of Ed Burns's rom com's: I think it's one of the 3 or 4 best rom com's of the 90's.

5 out of 5 stars The Brilliant wonder of Catherine Keener Shines in this pick.......2004-03-03

This is the film that introduced me to the wonderment of Catherine Keener, Liv Schreiber and Anne Heche. Plus it has the ultra cool, funny Kevin Corrigan. A film about 20's somethings and their relationships and what happens when you feel you are losing your best friend to an impending wedding. Catherine Keener plays a neurotic woman who has no idea what she wants out of a relationship, so she relies heavily on her best friend (Heche) and her ex-boyfriend and male best friend (Schreiber). They are there to comfort her and are outlets to express her doubts on love and life. But one of her outlets is about to get married and she has a hard time adjusting to that fact. It's a good story about life in your 20's. There is a wonderful appearance by Kevin Corrigan who just steals most of the scenes he is in. It's not over the top acting (as you get in your better known dramas) and its not just caricatures... It's just a little low-budget film with some really good acting. The right amount of acting that is required for a film of this quality. And I found it rather enjoyable.

1 out of 5 stars POORLY WRITTEN SCRIPT FREEZES OUT THE CAST'S EFFORTS........2005-02-27

Of the Relationship Labyrinth genre, this work, filmed and set in Regina, Saskatchewan, with Canadian players and crew is, just the same, rife with bromides nurtured in United States based pictures, as evidenced by its predictable scenes and dialogue relating incidents concerning a coterie of men in their late twenties whose lifestyles and interests revolve about young women and playing basketball. Sam (Michael Goorjian) and his teammates from a church league cage quintet have enormous troubles in their relationships with females, and when he as well as his best friend ( David Lovgren) seek the affections of Kelly, played by Chandra West, expected complexities are the result, especially since the two have widely disparate abilities when in company with the gentler sex. Although there is genuine chemistry between Goorjian and West, character development is lacking within the script, and most of the portrayed personalities are basically unpleasant as depicted, as are many of the scenes that are additionally marred by erratic direction and mean-spirited endeavours at humour that are simply not funny, and while Sam spasmodically cites philosophers Kierkegaard, Sartre, Camus and Descartes, they are quoted in an embarrassingly witless fashion. Continuity weaknesses often appear along with a shortfall of storyline logic, and at no time does the scenario reveal anything of the men's occupations, as apparently they only play basketball and chase women, but Lovgren takes the acting garland with his solid reading as a persistent libertine, and striking compositions from cinematographer Jon Kranhouse enable one to upon occasion ignore the discursive plot.
