When they say they don't make 'em like they used to, they're talking about 20th Century Fox's exhilarating The Mark of Zorro, starring Tyrone Power as the caped one, Linda Darnell as his love interest, and Basil Rathbone at his scurrilous best as Zorro's nemesis. More textured than the 1920 original with Douglas Fairbanks, this 1940 version has Don Diego/Zorro (Powers) returning from Madrid to defend his father and rally the caballeros (noblemen) against Los Angeles's corrupt new governor (J. Edward Bromberg), intent on taxing the peons to death.
If this all sounds like an Old California redo of the classic Adventures of Robin Hood, that's because it is. Powers has a field day as Don Diego, the "fancy clown" betrothed to the governor's niece, Lolita (Darnell). Don Diego the effete snob performs silly parlor tricks, peers through pince-nez, and yawns disdainfully at one and all. Power's cowardly alter ego is so believable, his transformation to masked superhero becomes all the more thrilling. Imagine Captain Pasquale's (Rathbone) shock when, in the film's brilliantly choreographed showdown, this annoying fop turns out to be a world-class swordsman.
Director Rouben Mamoulian, known for great period melodramas, does a skillful job of alternating garrison intrigue with big action scenes, including a nighttime ride that climaxes with Zorro on horseback leaping off a bridge. In the romantic highlight, Lolita confides her innermost desires to a suspiciously worldly friar. The first-rate supporting cast includes Gale Sondergaard as the governor's treacherous wife and the frog-voiced Eugene Pallette (Friar Tuck in The Adventures of Robin Hood) as a padre in cahoots with the masked one. Technically, this retelling rates an unqualified "Wow!" The cinematography, obviously influenced by Goya, makes full use of chiaroscuro shadows, and Alfred Newman's Latin-flavored score is irresistibly rousing and romantic. --Glenn Lovell
Description
This swashbuckling remake of the silent classic stars Tyrone Power as the dashing masked avenger who single-handedly saves Los Angeles from Spanish despots. Don Diego Vega (Power) is summoned home from his elite training corps in Spain to California, where he finds his father deposed and the people living in tyranny. Disguised as Zorro, a sword-wielding mystery man dressed in black, he works to restore his father to power and return the tax money stolen by the villains (J. Edward Bromberg, Basil Rathbone). He even finds time to romance the ruling tyrant's beautiful niece (Linda Darnell).
Customer Reviews:
40s swashbuckling fun.......2007-08-10
Upon returning to California from military training in Spain, Don Diego Vega (Tyrone Power) is shocked to see the wretched condition of the peasants and assumes the guise of Zorro to strike terror into the heart of the greedy alcalde (J. Edward Bromberg) who has usurped the position of Don Diego's own father (Montagu Love).
This is Hollywood swashbuckling at its finest. Power is excellent not only as the dashing, heroic Zorro, but also very amusing when he puts on foppish airs to make everyone believe that Don Diego is an insignificant dandy. Basil Rathbone makes a strong impression as the alcalde's chief henchman. His swordfight with Power is a highlight of this exciting film.
"The Mark of Zorro (1940) ... Tyrone Power ... 20th Century Fox (2005)".......2007-07-29
20th Century Fox present "THE MARK OF ZORRO" (Special Edition) (Released: November 8, 1940) (93 mins) (Fully Restored/Dolby Digitally Remastered) --- now in COLOR and Glorious Black and White --- "The Mark of Zorro" is a 1940 feature motion picture directed by Rouben Mamoulian and produced by 20th Century Fox --- It starred Tyrone Power as Don Diego de la Vega (Zorro), Linda Darnell as his love interest, (Lolita Quintero), Montagu Love as (Don Alejandro Vega), Gale Sondergaard as the naughty (Inez Quintero), Eugene Pallette as (Fra. Felipe), with Basil Rathbone, one of the most durable of screen villains who has mastered stage fencing but never won a sword fight, plays the cruel (Captain Esteban Pasquale), the Alcalde's military adviser and J. Edward Bromberg was the corrupt governor (Don Luis Quintero ) --- The film was directed by Rouben Mamoulian and produced by Raymond Griffith and Darryl F. Zanuck.
Based on the Johnston McCulley story "The Curse of Capistrano", originally published in 1919, which introduced the masked hero Zorro, the movie's story is set in Southern California during the early 19th century --- It deals with the foppish son of a wealthy ranchero who returns to California after a sojourn at school in Spain, only to be horrified at the way the common people are being mistreated by Governor Quintero --- Don Diego adopts the guise of Zorro ("the Fox"), a Robin Hood like outlaw who becomes a defender of the people --- In the meanwhile, he romances the governor's beautiful niece, Lolita, and fends off the governor's ablest henchman, the malevolent Captain Pasquale --- The high point of the picture is the fantastic duel between Power and Rathbone, a masterpiece of screen Swordplay --- Tyrone Power had joined Errol Flynn as the reigning 'kings' of swashbucklers, a title both would find amusing, if limiting, but which would be how both actors are best remembered, today! (From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia)
Under Rouben Mamoulian (Director), Raymond Griffith (Producer), Darryl F. Zanuck (Producer), John Taintor Foote (Screenwriter), Garrett Elsden Fort (Screenwriter), Johnston McCulley (Short Story Author), Bess Meredyth (Screenwriter),Arthur C. Miller (Cinematographer), Alfred Newman (Musical Direction/Supervision / Composer (Music Score), Robert Bischoff (Editor), Richard Day (Art Director), Joseph C. Wright (Art Director), Thomas K. Little (Set Designer), Travis Banton (Costume Designer) - - - - This film is essentially a remake of the 1920 United Artists silent version, "The Mark of Zorro", which starred Douglas Fairbanks --- The 20th Century Fox 1940 version under Alfred Newman's Oscar-Nominated score and despite the unusual absence of Technicolor, the film (the first of the great Tyrone Power swashbucklers ) is great fun, full of vitality and suspense, an exciting, deliciously ironic swashbuckler

The Mark of Zorro.......2007-06-25
Under Mamoulian's sure-footed direction, only Power could one-up Douglas Fairbanks with this rousing remake of the 1920 silent classic--still the zingiest and most technically dazzling "Zorro" of the bunch. Power is so adept at shifting from the slightly doltish Don Diego to the heroic masked avenger that it's difficult to imagine anyone else in the role. Among the fabulous supporting cast, Rathbone stands out as Zorro's loathsome nemesis, Bromberg and Gale Sondergaard are delightful as the ruthless regents, and Darnell is winning as the love interest. Daring horseback rides, thrilling duels, exquisite cinematography...What more could you want in a swashbuckler?
Age of the TRUE swashbucklers.......2007-06-13
While I perfer my "oldies" in the true black and white format, it was very good to see a very good colorized version. I heartily recommend this movie to anyone who is in search of real romantic adventure. The cast is perfect and the acting superb. Highly recommended.
5 Stars for the movie, minus one for the annoying commercial.......2007-05-22
First, I'll agree with all the other posters on the quality of the story and acting. Swashbuckling, action fun in a way that simply doesn't get made anymore. If you enjoyed Adventures of Robin Hood with Errol Flynn, you'll like this one too - two of the actors from Robin Hood even appear in Zorro in almost identical roles.
So, now to the annoying feature that lost this particular version a star: that stupid anti-piracy ad in the beginning of the colorized version that you can't skip past. I appreciate having the option to watch either the color version or the B&W, but if I have to sit through that 30-second torture every time I want to watch the color version, I think I'll stick to the B&W one.

"You made me a cripple, so I'll make you a cripple, too," sneers charismatic swordplay superstar Wang Yu, clutching his severed member, in this 1967 classic of manly suffering and bloodshed. Because of its implacable-revenge motif, and its extended training sequences, this is sometimes cited as the first true martial arts movie--a transitional film between the old-school swordplay and the contemporary kung fu genres. Whatever you call it, it is easily one of the most influential Asian action movies ever made. A master of long-sword fighting techniques, Wang loses an arm in the early innings. (It is hacked off by the woman he loves.) In order to exact payback, he has to master the unfamiliar short-sword style, using the stump of his symbolically shattered blade. Meanwhile, enemies of the long-sword school have invented a sneaky "sword-clamp" device and deploy it against the good guys. Issues of fighting style and discipline are central; one technique trumps another, and the hero triumphs because, driven by rage, he practices more obsessively than his foes. This is a lean, effective piece of genre craftsmanship from the great director Chang Cheh, finally available in the U.S. in a letterboxed version that gives his shapely widescreen compositions a fair shake. --David Chute

INCREDIBLE SWORD FIGHTING FILM !!.......2007-07-03
The Weinstein Company has to be commended for releasing "The One-Armed Swordsman" on DVD.The video and audio restoration that went into this release is truly amazing. The film is presented in it's 2.35:1 Widescreen format and enhanced for 16x9 televisions. This is without a doubt the best version of "The One-Armed Swordsman" I've ever seen. The video transfer is just spectacular and the colors are sharp and vibrant. The sound is clean and crisp albeit in mono. The sound options include original Mandarin or English dubbed version and choice of Subtitles. The special features I found most interesting were the Interview with Jimmy Wang Yu and the Stills Gallery and Trailer Gallery.Sadly the commentary of Quentin Tarantino listed on the rear cover under the special features section of the DVD is missing.Martial Arts fans will be amazed by the incredible quality of this release and the non-stop blood filled action.
5 stars for movie, 3 stars for release.......2007-06-22
OK if you have never seen this movie and are interested in classic kung-fu movies, by all means get this release, the quality is great. My complaint is that the Weinstein company lied about the special features. I already owned a great region 3 copy of this film, and was surprised to see that the new American release had commentary by Quentin Tarantino, which is stated on the package. I know that he is a big Shaw bros fan and was interested in hearing his insight on the film. I could care less about the film scholars opinions as they don't really state anything a fan wouldn't already know. Well the DVD does NOT have commentary by him, and my purchase was completely pointless. This review is to mainly to warn others out-there like myself who are huge fans that might also be considering purchasing this version for that reason.

Amazon.com essential video
The Ox-Bow Incident is one of the essential Westerns, directed by William Wellman. A study of the effects--and aftereffects--of mob violence, this film (based on a true story) begins with the murder of a popular rancher. Angry townspeople form a posse, find suspects, and, without waiting for a trial, summarily hang them in an expression of biblically tinged frontier justice. But the one cowboy who tried to turn the mob aside ultimately proves that they executed innocent men. Made in 1943, the film features stunning black-and-white cinematography and a solid dramatic sense about what a deadly combination ignorance and self-righteousness can be. Fonda made this film between The Grapes of Wrath and My Darling Clementine, at a point when he was at the peak of his powers as a young actor. --Marshall Fine
Description
Two drifters are passing through a Western town, when news comes in that a local farmer has been murdered and his cattle stolen. The townspeople, joined by the drifters, form a posse to catch the perpetrators. They find three men in possession of the cattle, and are determined to see justice done on the spot.
Customer Reviews:
Powerful Drama But A Bit Talky.......2007-09-06
Since this film was released in 1942, it may have been one of earliest times this theme - preaching civility amid a rioting mob out to lynch someone. - was put on film, so I can't accuse them of copying an old storyline. What sets this apart and makes it a good movie was the great dialog, especially in the early moments when "Gil Carter" (Henry Fonda) and "Art Croft" (Harry Morgan) enter a bar. The characters in here pretty black-and-white as far as their attitudes go. The three guys the mob accuses later on are made to look totally innocent, almost too much so right off the bat, so there is really no guessing done by us, the audience.
Fonda was most interesting of the lead characters, along with Frank Conroy as "Major Tetley" and Dana Andrews as "Donald Martin." Jane Darwell was a hoot as one of the more bloodthirsty of the mob members. That was a far cry from her role with Fonda in "The Grapes Of Wrath."
The film bogs down once they get to the campsite where they think they've found the murders-rustlers. but it does pick back up the last 15 or so minutes and the reactions of the mob at the end in the bar are interesting. Even though very talky by today's standards, it's a powerful story, well-acted, well-directed, nicely shot (the DVD looks good) and the message is one to remember.
Great film for mobbing illustration.......2007-06-20
This film illustrates the mob rule that takes over - when a group decides to castigate someone.
For anyone who has been persecuted, maligned, or mistreated - at the hands of the mob (an evil group of people of any type) - this book is a must.
ox bow incident.......2006-11-07
henry fonda- one of the finest actors ever. terrific in grapes of wrath. this movie deals with the mob mentality. the mob jumps to convict and execute three hapless, full of pity, and innocent men. may we never fall into these circumstances.
The bleak nihilism of William Wellman..........2006-11-06
The theme here is based on William's Wellman's stern, uncompromising study of mob rule, set in the Old West... It is one of tragic misunderstanding, the sort of witches brew of error, impatience and intolerance, which must have often characterized Western rough justice...
Mob fury surrounds a little cattle-town like a fever... Most citizens seem only too eager to join a manhunt for the murderer of a rancher... Henry Fonda and his sidekick Henry Morgan have to go along with the tide, if only for the fact that, as wanderers passing through, they are not above suspicion themselves...
The unofficial posse, under the leadership of Major Tetley (Frank Conroy) comes upon the campfire of three suspects...
On the basis of circumstantial evidence, Tetley exhorts the mob into an on-the-spot trial... Despite the pleas of a few dissenters, a guilty verdict t is quickly reached and a triple lynching is performed...
Then, riding back, the lynch-mob gets the news that the rancher is still alive and the real villains have been taken...
"The Oxbow Incident" was never a box office success, but was rewarded with an Oscar nomination for Best Picture... However the film makes its point, as well as it ever did... It's not only about the social injustice of instant justice; it's also about human nature, all its oddities, frailties and the perils therein... It's often said that it laid the beginning of the psychological Western... That's perhaps too big and ambiguous a claim... What it does possess to a marked degree is keen observation, and a fine distinction that is never difficult to see...
A Timeless Classic.......2006-10-28
The Ox-Bow Incident is one of those seminal films where everything about it looks right, feels right, and sounds right. The acting, directing, and script are almost more accurate than we can stand, given that the main thrust of the story proves how methodically misguided people can be.
Henry Fonda and Henry Morgan play two drifters who happen into a Western town reeling from the murder of a popular and powerful rancher. They join the town's posse, and catch three men in possession of the rancher's cattle. The posse quickly turns into a lynch mob, with Fonda trying to keep things calm and rational.
The story reveals the sometimes dark and disturbing tendency of society to react with haste and violence rather than with reason and mercy. Based on a true story and a best-selling novel, The Ox-Bow Incident is a cautionary tale, but it is also a mirror. One that is easier to break or ignore than it is to look at.

In between performances in sold-out venues, interviews with the girls reveal the post-feminist ethos of this striptease empire, in which self-confidence, creativity, and personal ambition are hailed as the motivating factors behind why they enjoy taking their clothes off in front of a camera. Some viewers may be attracted to the message, while others may just be content to watch nubile young women with a variety of piercings vamp it up. Either way, Suicide Girls - The First Tour presents a spirited glimpse of a subculture bent on redefining what is beautiful.--Ryan Boudinot

Customer Reviews:
The Suicide Generation sucks.......2007-06-02
Egh...Not a big fan of the site anymore, thought I'd give the DVD one last good watch...this video was really disapointing.
The video has no consistency, it's messy, and devoid of purpose and entertainment.
However if you are looking for cute girls and decent music...look no further. That's about all you will take with you from this DVD.
A look at Caberet.......2007-01-29
If your a fan of the old Burlesque and Caberet styles but you're wanting something with a bit more edge and a new face - look no further. This is done quite well.
Awesome video!.......2007-01-25
I really enjoyed the interviews most of all, especially the ones with Missy. If you're into Suicide Girls for the fact that you think it's awesome porn, you might want to skip this. This video is geared more toward the people who don't look at SG as porn, but more of an art form, a way for one to express themselves. This video is definitely more of a documentary... Wait, no, a 'Rockumentary' covering an entire tour.
Again, an awesome video that could be used for educational purposes in my mind.
Suicide Girls - The First Tour.......2007-01-09
The DVD arrived in a timely matter and the DVD was a gift for a friend who enjoyed watching it.
Bear witness.......2006-11-26
This DVD has an excellent soundtrack and is a beautiful piece of art. But, most of all, this DVD is an insight into the cultural revolution that is the Suicide Girls. Watching the realization among the girls as they see how significant their work is to both fans and the country will you in awe just as much as the beauty of their work.

Description
(Horror) When a Canadian research photographer is killed, leaving behind a photo of a boy in an otherwise empty room, paranormal investigative scientist, Hashimoto, and his team investigate the scene. Armed with a newly invented material they capture the ghost: an unidentified 13-year old boy. Who is this ghost? Why does it kill people? As they seal off the room and monitor the captured spirit, they soon learn that even though it's energy can be visibly seen, humans are unable to hear it. In an effort to learn the ghost's past, Hashimoto's team enlists the help of special agent Ye, gifted with extraordinary eyesight and ability to lip-read. As Ye gets closer to solving the riddle of the boy's past, he learns the horrifying truth of the boy's death. Fearing that the ghost child is dangerous, the team decides to isolate the ghost but in doing so they unknowingly unleash a mysterious force, a much more powerful and ferocious energy to which the boy somehow seems connected.

Very complete.......2007-08-12
I certainly agree with all the other reviews. A complete story, unique imagination, with no "missing links" and had that atmosphere of reality which a lot of other ghost type movies lack which makes a huge difference. Would have been nice if the deleted scenes were not deleted, but nevertheless, a brilliant piece of work I reckon that stands out from the others, and concentrating on detail and coherency from start to finish.
Intelligent And Creative Sci-Fi Horror Film!.......2007-08-03
The film SILK is a very different and creative horror film. I also recommend it highly, especially if you are looking for something different in the horror genre. With a mixture of sci-fi and horror thrown together, SILK is one entertaining film. The story centers around a team of paranormal investigators who are led by one stubborn and heavily driven character in search of life after death. His name is Hashimoto,(Yosuke Eguchi), and he is the leader of this special paranormal research team. I found his particular character great. Hashimoto is a man in search of immortality; but one with a catch, as he tries to unravel the secrets of life after death.
Hashimoto recruits a select research team of other investigators, and among these is a police sniper named Tung (Change Chen) who has the ability to read lips. This ability to read lips is of the utmost importance to this group of paranormal researchers, and in particular Hashimoto. Their job? To discover the mystery of a boy who happens to also be a ghost. And this is one malevolent ghost. The film introduces the viewer to what is known as a Menger Sponge. This is where sci-fi meets horror. You see, the Menger Sponge is a special anti-gravity device that can enable the researchers to ensnare ghosts. Moreover, the Menger sponge has been reverted to a liquid spray which allows the researchers to see ghosts.
Personally, I found the film fascinating. This is a very different type of horror film. And I always like something different in the horror genre. Also, the acting in this film was very good. Hashimoto's character is great to watch, but the entire film is outstanding. And there are some sad moments to watch in this film as Hashimoto attempts to learn about the afterlife. Further, the character Tung (Chang Chen) gives an extremely good performance, especially when his sick mother is introduced to the film. Chao-Pin Su did a remarkable job with this film, as the writing, cinematography and characters meshed perfectly in this very creative film. I recommend the film SILK, especially for those who like intelligent horror films. The film delivers good horror and drama, and does so in an entertaining way. Highly recommended. [Stars: 4.5]
A truly new concept!.......2007-06-21
I really enjoyed this film. I am a fan of Asian horror films but have gotten tired of the same "vengeful ghost" scenario. OK, so maybe this movie DOES have a vengeful ghost, but it's premise of capturing a ghost for scientific purposes is pretty original. It's a cool blend of sci-fi and horror and I would highly recommend it to Asian horror fans.
Suspenseful and immersive sci-fi, horror flick..........2007-05-21
SILK is a sleeper hit in Asia. I took a chance when I purchased the REGION-3 DTS Hong Kong release and man!, was I pleased with the decision. This is one of the best supernatural thrillers I've seen since SHUTTER, RINGU and THE SIXTH SENSE, and the best thing about it is it doesn't rely on the "WATERLOGGED,long-haired ghost". From what I heard the TARTAN release will use the same video transfer as the Deltamac release.
SYPNOSIS:(May have some spoilers)
The film is a mix of SCI-FI and the usual elements of ASIAN HORROR. A group of scientists led by Hashimoto, armed with a newly invented material called the MENGER SPONGE captures the energy of a ghost child. This invention financed/owned by the Japanese government, is quite malleable and can be used as a coat for walls, for camera filters and can be used as an eye-spray to allow the user to see Ghosts.
They enlist the aid of an agent named Ye Tung, a law enforcer from the JCCU, who can read lips and has a gifted eyesight, to assist them in unveiling the mystery of the ghost child. Hashimoto and his team lets the ghost child loose, so that,Ye, aided with the MENGER SPONGE spray, can see a strand of SILK that emanates from the supernatural child, this strand is the key to a mysterious power.
Ye tracks the ghostly boy and the strand to the horrifying truth of the child's death. Fearing that the ghost child is dangerous and for his own hidden agenda, Hashimoto,(and his team) decides to isolate him, but in doing so, they unknowingly unleashed the supernatural force in the other end of the SILK strand, a MUCH more POWERFUL, and MALEVOLENT energy.
This film really kept my attention for the whole 105 minutes. It doesn't have cheap scares, but instead relies on the plot to slowly unveal, the suspense builds up the closer you approach the climax. Each lead character is developed carefully. It is a story about love, hate and learning to let go, unlike most Asian horror flicks focuses on a VENGEFUL, Blood-thirsty ghost.
Note: The "MENGER SPONGE" does actually exist. Although, the actual Menger Sponge won't allow anyone to perform paranoramal feats or catch ghosts. I still think it is very interesting. Look it up in Wikipedia.
PICTURE: ANAMORPHIC WIDESCREEN(aspect ratio 1:78). The picture is nicely shot, sharp and smooth. The color pallette leans towards a "Green Bleach" hue, similar to most Japanese horror films. There are some video artifacts on some scenes, but not that noticeable. another very good video transfer from DELTAMAC.
AUDIO/SUBTITLES: Japanese/Mandarin- 5.1 DOLBY DIGITAL and 5.1 DTS. The DTS audio is the way to go. You can hear all the creaks and whispers in a much fuller sound. The English subtitles are well executed, not perfect with some typos here and there, but not distracting and annoying.
SPECIAL FEATURES: Deleted scenes, making-of, Outtakes, photo gallery, extra bonus.
This film is well-worth a look if you like SCI-FI Horror films. I saw this film 4-5 months ago(thanks to the magic of multi-region players), I'm pleased that it received a REGION-1 release this soon so people can see the quality films that come from Asia.
HIGHLY RECOMMENDED! (for Horror fans)

Description
Betty Grable in the role that she made famous throughout World War II. A classic musical romance with Martha Raye and Joe E. Brown.
Customer Reviews:
Art imitates life as Grable plays "The Pin Up Girl".......2007-03-28
Betty Grable may have been seven months pregnant when this picture wrapped; but she puts in a fine performance with this musical. She sings well and dances, too. Fox does a marvelous job of hiding the fact that she's pregnant. The plot is razor thin as it was with many musicals of its time; but again the singing and dancing are why people go to see musicals--and you won't be disappointed there.
Grable plays Lorry Jones, a carefree gal who promises her heart to a mere 500 men to make them happy since she figures she'll never bump into them again when World War II is over. Lorry goes to New York for a weekend romp with her friend Kay, played by Dorothea Kent, before the two have to report for their new jobs as stenographers at the Naval Department in Washington. Naturally, the moment the ladies hit New York things begin to happen--and fast. They see the famous war hero Tommy Dooley played by John Harvey at Grand Central Station and there's competition for him right from the start in nightclub singer Molly McKay who is played by Martha Raye. Eventually they all wind up in a nightclub as the romantic sparks begin to fly between Lorry Jones and Tommy Dooley. Several musical numbers later, along with some incredible dancing both on foot and on roller skates, Lorry and Tommy may actually have the chance at a longer term relationship--provided, that is, that Molly, a Marine and the other 499 men Lorry casually said she was engaged to don't get in their way.
As one reviewer notes, I couldn't help but compare this to the great MGM musicals of the day. The two numbers in which the two men tap dance are wonderful; and I also thoroughly enjoyed the colorful number where the beautiful dancing girls wear huge feathers of red, white and blue. However, Grable fans will be the ones who will be the happiest with this movie as it really doesn't quite measure up to other musicals--even the other musicals in which Grable starred while she was at Fox!
The cinematography reflects good judgment and forethought; the characters are well framed within the picture which gives this mid 1940s war time musical a rather "pure" and "conservative, going with the mainstream" quality. The choreography shines with each and every dance number; I believe that a great deal of work went into figuring out how to stage those musical numbers.
The DVD has a few extras worth noting: you get a deleted scene of Grable singing a song that was cut from the final production; and there is a commentary by Richard Schickel. There are trailers for this movie and three other Fox musicals, too.
After all is said and done, however, this is Betty Grable's movie; and Grable's fans will enjoy Pin-Up Girl the most. The plot is rather thin and the acting by John Harvey is nothing special; but Grable gives a solid performance. Fox takes great advantage of the fact that Grable WAS a "pin-up girl" in real life. If you like musicals you'll probably enjoy this one but rate it about a B+. However, true blue Grable fans will love every minute of this movie.
"We should have used our imaginations".......2006-07-11
Skewering her real life role of a pin up girl, this 1944 movie stars Betty Grable as Lorry Jones a pretty and feisty young girl who works for the USO and is heading for Washington DC. Aboard the train, a conversation with friend Kay (Dorothea Kent) reveals that the pair isn't headed for the USO, but will instead take jobs as stenographers.
On the way, the pair decides to visit New York, where they see Molly McKay (Martha Raye) flirting with Guadalcanal hero Tommy Dooley (John Harvey). Later, Lorry claims to know the hero to gain admittance to the packed Club Chanteuse. The Club itself is a grand affair; a huge swing band plays on a giant stage that stretches from floor to ceiling, whilst the actual show consists of singers, dancers and even roller-skating routine featuring the Skating Vanities!
When Tommy eventually turns up at the club, he is immediately besotted with the cute Lorry. But Molly - the real star of the Club Chanteuse - is secretly seething; she knows that Molly is a fake so she asks her sing a song from the show. Lorry gets back at Molly when she belts out the tune as if she sang it every night on stage, even with back up singers!
Lorry and Kay continue on their journey to Washington DC and eventually bump into Tommy who coincidentally is looking for a stenographer - of course he picks Lorry. Of course Tommy can't tell who Lorry is because she's wearing glasses and has her hair in a bun, and every time he looks at her, she's looking back at him with crossed-eyes!
The story is silly and trite and almost non-existent, and it's all merely an excuse for framing the elaborate musical numbers, which are centered on the three-tiered bandstands where Charlie Spivak and his Orchestra sit. Indeed most of the action takes place in the nightclubs where Lorry and Tommy mostly hang out.
Obviously made for all the GI's, the film has an innocent quality combined with a sort of fierce patriotism and you really get the sense that the film is pushing the merits of the allied war effort. There's no doubt that Grable is sparkling and bubbly and she does a good job with the singing and dancing, even though the role is a bit of a caricature. But you can easily see how much she contributed to the war effort.
It's interesting to watch films such as this - not just for the flashy musical numbers, which sometimes border in the gaudy, but also for the social relevance, and for the forties nostalgia.
Although Pin-Up Girl may not be the best example of a War musical - the film is slight and is basically restricted to the pattern of boy-meets-girl and they live happily ever after - it's still a welcome and harmless diversion - just like Betty Grable, with her long silken legs, was a distraction for lonely soldiers of World War II. Mike Leonard July 06.
Finally, Grable on DVD!.......2006-04-23
It's a shame that all the Fox musicals haven't been released on DVD, especially the gorgeous Technicolor titles featuring Alice Faye, Betty Grable and Carmen Miranda.
Most agree that this wasn't Betty's best film ... the ending is especially weak, although the all-girl marching routine is impressive. The commentary by noted film historian/critic Richard Shickel is not especially helpful and uninspired. His comments on Martha Raye and Joe E. Brown are good but he incorrectly states that this was their only film together ... wrong. They co-starred in "$1000 A Touchdown" for Paramount in 1939. And this was Raye's third film with Grable, which Shickel doesn't mention. He also passes up the fact that Raye was married to one of the dancing Condos Brothers in the movie. The notes in the colorful and well-designed DVD liner by film historian Sylvia Stoddard are much more fun and accurate.
The film transfer itself seems a bit on the dark side, but it's still gorgeous.
Thanks, Fox! As a Grable and Raye fan, I've waited for this for a long time!
Comment on commentary..........2006-04-01
Listening to Richard Schickel's slow delivery will probaby put you to sleep although he does provide some interesting background information on some of the stars in the film. He states, correctly, that Joe E. Brown will probably be best remembered for his role in "Some Like It Hot." However, he mistakenly states that Tony Curtis was the "girl" for the Joe E Brown character when it was actually Jack Lemmon.
Must also agree with the other reviewers that this is a rather forgettable musical with equally forgettable songs.
WHERE ARE MICKEY AND JUDY WHEN YOU NEED 'EM?.......2006-03-13
In the Golden Age of Hollywood, each studio usually took a stab all various genres, but excelled in only one. Warner Brothers cornered gangster films, with forays into musicals (Busby Berkeley) and noir (Bogart). Universal dabbled in lots of B-films, but succeeded big-time with horror. MGM, of course, produced the best musicals. Fox did melodramas --- especially noir --- with an occasional romp on MGM's musical turf. And usually those romps hit some really bad notes. Witness the first three flicks in their Marquee Musicals series. Daddy Long Legs has Astaire and Caron, Pin-Up Girl has Betty Grable, Week-End in Havana has Alice Faye and Carmen Miranda, The memory of these films, for the most part, is a lot better than the films themselves. The pleasant but fairly pedestrian scores, thin plots and busy character actors scurrying around propping up the story make for rough going. And make one yearn for Mickey and Judy.

Description
A salesgirl (Alice Faye) threatens to cause trouble when cruise ship runs aground and vacation is ruined. As compensation, she soon gets a free first class Havana holiday with the ship owner's future son-in-law (John Payne) as wall as some unexpected attention from a conniving gambler (Cesar Romero) and his girlfriend (Carmen Miranda).
Customer Reviews:
Ah, Havana!.......2007-08-16
This film is a classic representation of those of its time and genre. Alice Faye was as good now as she was then. The supporting cast show their versatility from other films they have appeared in and the film is all around fun. The dancers & musicians of that era shine and can never be replaced.
Trust me-you'll enjoy it!
Are we there yet ??? Two and 1/2 stars.......2007-07-16
Week-End In Havana can at the very, very best be described as a "fun" film--because the truth is that the film never goes very far and the plot is remarkably contrived. What a shame! The film sports a great cast with Alice Faye, John Payne, Cesar Romero and Carmen Miranda; and they try to do the best they can do with a somewhat flawed plot and poorly written lines.
The action begins when a cruise ship to Havana, Cuba hits the rocks near Cuba and is disabled. All the passengers sign waivers and get arrangements for other trips--all, that is, except one Nan Spencer (Alice Faye). Nan saved like a fiend for this trip and she won't take no for an answer--she wants her vacation NOW! The cruise ship execs panic and even postpone a wedding so that one of their vice presidents, Jay Williams (John Payne), can fly down to Cuba. Jay eventually winds up giving Nan the vacation in Cuba she wanted to avoid her suing the steamship company.
And then the plot thins. Somehow the script works in Cesar Romero as a gambler who romances Nan to get money he thinks she has so he can pay off his gambling debts; Carmen Miranda fits in better as the passionate, flighty nightclub singer who performs some solid numbers in this movie. Of course, you may well be able to predict what happens between Jay Williams, Nan Spencer and Jay's fiancée Terry; but I'll leave that part out so you have some reason to watch this movie--just as long as nothing more exciting is on television tonight.
I can't quite put my finger on it; but those musical numbers and the fast paced slapstick high jinks and all too quickly concocted romances just don't do it for me. I'm spoiled--MGM musicals did it better. Sigh.
The choreography works well throughout the picture; all you have to do is watch those dance numbers with many dancers dancing simultaneously to know that they did work hard to stage those dance numbers. The cinematography reflects good judgment. The choreography and the cinematography work better than the plot!
The DVD features some optional commentary which is rare given the fact that movies from this era don't often offer this; and there is a small stills gallery as well.
Overall, Week-End In Havana works well for a day when the weather is crummy and there's nothing else on television. At times the plot takes a twist that is so contrived I would rather watch cow manure exploding in a field somewhere out in farm country. My sympathy to the stars of this film who offered great talent but had it wasted by a plot with lines so simple a fifth grader could have written most if not all of them.
Two and ½ stars.
Rhumba, romance, and chintzy painted backdrops.......2007-02-17
All Alice Faye has to do is sing in her gorgeous full contralto (that is almost a baritone) and you immediately can see why she was 20th-Century Fox's biggest star during the war years: here she transforms a dull song like "Rhumba and Romance" into a little masterpiece while dancing with Cesar Romero and really kicking back. While skimpy, the plot of this very typical Fox musical is fairly efficient: Faye, a Macy's shopgirl, is the last holdout to sign off for liability when her cruise ship runs aground on a sand bar, so an executive of the cruise line (John Payne) has to squire her around Havana to make sure she has a good time. Along the way they run into an incompetent gigolo (Romero) and his spitfire girlfriend (Carmen Miranda, of course, since Brazil and Cuba were considered pretty interchangeable in the minds of 40s America). The costumes by Gwen Wakeling are quite eyecatching, and the lovedly and unusual model Cobana Wright, Jr., plays Faye's rival, and John Payne is at least very handsome; unfortunately the sets and backdrops are pretty chintzy,as was often per usual with Fox, and the songs by Mack Gordon are instantly forgettable. The only thing to really lift this above mediocrity is Faye, who is not much of an actress (though she does have fun with a New York accent), but who sings like a dream.
