blindingly absording.......2007-05-10

I have seen this film numerous times. Woods is spellbinding, Young is perfect as his partner. The music, the sets, the relationship between Woods and his new California boss, his buddy's bitchy girlfried who comes through when Young falls to her miscarriage. Whew! Emotionally electrifying and exhausting. Watching the couple spiral downward. Just when Lenny has his "comeback" brilliant idea he blows it (ha!) at a dinner presentation. I had not realized that the film can be interpreted as a caution against drug use until I sat down to enthusiastically share it with a friend. She found it depressing because of having had similar experiences, another friend was cynical about the films "message." I had been blind to all of this while entranced with the performances and the emotional experiences of the characters. One of the last times I saw the film I had to turn away when Lenny beats Linda, continually smashing her across her face after she is already bleeding. Young brings such an authentic innocence and vulnerability to her role, as does Woods actually. One of many scenes that sticks out for me is when they are moving from their luxury home. Young walks out into the road searching for their lost dog, plaitively asking passersby if they have seen him. She seems as lost as the dog and as uncertain as the likelihood of his being found. It is heartbreaking. They are as children lost in an uncertain wonderland. Amanda Blake symbolizes how a sage "career tweeker" can maintain. See the movie, prearrange for a lightweight activity after.

story of cocaine addiction.......2007-02-18

A seemingly true to life story of the negative consequences of cocaine addiction and other chemical addiction. I have used it in my treatment groups and while it isn't a pleasant story and leaves one with a lack of "hope" it probably is pretty true to life as far as the results of cocaine addiction.

Good drug movie, gets carried away at times.......2005-01-06

This movie is like a cross between 'Wall Street' and 'Requiem for a Dream.' It is about a young guy working his way up in the business world (the hard way probably) when he gets a little wrapped up in cocaine and his life goes down the toilet. Basically, about $20,000 of company money goes up his nose on one trip, causing him to be fired, after which he only goes further and further into dispair and misdirection. The climax of the film occurs when, having spent half of dinner doing lines in the bathroom, James Woods goes absolutely berserk in front of a buch of bankers who are potentially going to finance "a project" he has in mind. It is hilarious coke fueled rampage. Other than that, there is some cheesy acting and the movie seems kind of preachy at the end; James Woods' downfall follows the lockstep pattern of a DARE councelor's wet dream. But still a very worthwhile watch.

Horrible to watch the human downfall.......2004-10-24

I just saw this movie and was spellbound but wanted to turn away. I am a great Woods fan and this part was suberb. I kept thinking back about his roll in the AAA founders. It is scarry to think how you can get into drugs. I kept wondering if this could happen to me.

This movie is recommended but it is so intense and full of human weaknesses. Not a melodrama.

HORRIFYING TRUTH.......2004-10-17

James Woods is unbelievable in this movie.He is absolutely amazing as Lenny Brown the sharp as a knife down on his luck salesman with a beautiful wife(Sean Young)and an evergrowing loss of worth in his mind.Well his luck has changed for the better when he meets a man that basically gives Lenny and his wife a new life in Beverly Hills with a new job,car,and house.Soon Lenny begins to spend,spend,spend and before you know it his company goes straight under.And when hes at a party he dabbles in cocaine just to get his edge back and he convinces his wife to take it.What happens to Lenny after is an evergrowin addiction that he tries to kick but then something awful happens and he's back on more drugs,any drugs he can get crack,downers,pills,name it and the ending is bleak and disturbing.Woods gives his best and most disturbing and real performance of his carreer.Get this movie now.

Slow Movements for Health Improvment.......2007-09-13

Energy Boost for Seniors is a must for anyone who is interested in T'ai Chi or other oriental based exercises that emphasize correct breathing, balance and coordination. David-Dorian Ross presents the exercises in a style that is easy to follow. One of the things that I appreciated about this DVD was that it was only 16 minutes in length. At 81, this is a comfortable amount of time for me to be able to follow and do all the exercises. These are exercises that can easily be learned and you can eventually make up your own routine so that you are not tied to just this one set of exercises. I would encourage people to buy additional programs such as T'ai Chi daily practice. This is two complete T'ai Chi workouts and would add to your repertoire. There are many DVD's availble in T'ai Chi and I would encourage you to browse and buy what appeals to you.

A Bit Surprising..........2007-05-12

I love all of David Dorian Ross' Tai Chi DVDs but this one surprised me. Since it was labeled for Seniors, I thought it would be fairly easy to do. I actually found it to be the most challenging of his DVDs and even wondered if his title "Energy Boost for Seniors" referred to senior (master) tai chi experts. The kicks left me off balance and I thought that there should have been more references to adapting these moves to seniors who might have some physical issues. It seemed lacking in instruction.

These simple exercises take only 20 minutes of your time. They are an excellent source for stretching your back muscles and clearing out the kinks.
So if you are new at this and have never done yoga or stretching exercises, be careful, don't overdo it and take your time. The verbal instructions are really good and the exercises are done slowly and methodically with meaningful explanations. And it does give one an energy boost. This type of energy is very fine and etheral but delivers a powerful boost. Also, this may not be for some people. Everyone is different and needs what works for them. But this definitely works for me and when I don't do them, at least every other day, I can tell the difference.

Nice short Pilates workout providing a little boost of energy.......2006-03-29

Energy Boost Pilates is kind of different in that it begins in a standing position with a few aerobic-type moves such as jogs, knee lifts, jumping jacks, and jumping lunges. This segment is very quick--no more than 1-2 minutes--and is designed to warm you up, but you could easily skip it if needed. Instructor Ana Caban then proceeds to the floor for some traditional Pilates matwork moves. Using voiceover instruction, she leads you quickly through reclined exercises such as the hundred, the roll-up, and part of the stomach series. Moving to a seated position, Ana then performs an additional series of moves, some of which I had never seen before (and I've done A LOT of Pilates videos). Then it's a quick stretch and you're done, for a total of about 11 minutes. This video struck me as sort-of a shorter, more fast-moving version of Ana's PM Pilates workout; it's a nice alternative for getting in a full-body Pilates workout in a limited amount of time.

"Energy Boost Pilates" is the bonus 15-minute workout from "AM PM Pilates Mat Work" with Jillian Hessel and Ana Caban.

Ana's alone outside by a pond with lots of plants and trees surrounding her. She cues in voiceover and she starts out with standing stretches. Then she has you jog, do jumping jacks and front-to-back lunges to "boost energy" with these short cardio moves. Then you roll down onto the mat for the hundreds, roll ups, leg stretches, the tree, shoulder bridge, the mermaid, etc.

There isn't much instructions for those new to pilates and Ana assumes familiarity with the poses. There's no demonstrations or suggestions for modifications, either.

Really a Boost!.......2005-07-01

Sometimes I get a little bored while I'm doing Pilates DVDs, they tend to get really long. What is great about this one is that the exersize part only lasts for ten minutes. You really get a workout, though! It's perfect because you can fit it in really easily to your day. I love Pilates and this just makes it better! Ana Caban is a great instructor, too. She speaks really clearly and it's very calmly done. Great DVD all around.
