Spike Lee's incendiary look at race relations in America, circa 1989, is so colorful and exuberant for its first three-quarters that you can almost forget the terrible confrontation that the movie inexorably builds toward. Do the Right Thing is a joyful, tumultuous masterpiece--maybe the best film ever made about race in America, revealing racial prejudices and stereotypes in all their guises and demonstrating how a deadly riot can erupt out of a series of small misunderstandings. Set on one block in Bedford-Stuyvesant on the hottest day of the summer, the movie shows the whole spectrum of life in this neighborhood and then leaves it up to us to decide if, in the end, anybody actually does the "right thing." Featuring Danny Aiello as Sal, the pizza parlor owner; Lee himself as Mookie, the lazy pizza-delivery guy; John Turturro and Richard Edson as Sal's sons; Lee's sister Joie as Mookie's sister Jade; Rosie Perez as Mookie's girlfriend Tina; Ossie Davis and Ruby Dee as the block elders, Da Mayor and Mother Sister; Giancarlo Esposito as Mookie's hot-headed friend Buggin' Out; Bill Nunn as the boom-box toting Radio Raheem; and Samuel L. Jackson as deejay Mister Señor Love Daddy. A rich and nuanced film to watch, treasure, and learn from--over and over again. --Jim Emerson

5 out of 5 stars Do the Right Thing.......2007-07-06

A brilliant, thought-provoking view of contemporary race relations, Spike Lee's breakthrough feature powerfully articulated the kinds of sentiments that were (and still are) verboten in mainstream Hollywood movies and polite social discourse. Shot on location in Brooklyn's famous Bed-Stuy neighborhood, this explosive film is a tour-de-force work of innovative cinematography, confrontational dialogue, and first-rate acting from the ensemble cast. Standouts are Rosie Perez (as Mookie's petulant Puerto Rican girlfriend) and Giancarlo Esposito (as Buggin Out, the comically radical activist whose boycott of Sal's causes tensions to boil over). Smart, funky, and in your face, "Do the Right Thing" is a bold film that really will make you sweat.

3 out of 5 stars maybe he shouldve stocked some nice rainbow ices ..........2007-06-11

poor spike lee: for 20 years now he has been trying to live up to the promise of this early movie -- but sad to say, two decades down the line, there wasnt as much there as people thought there was. the imagery of the streets (based on the real life howard beach horror) is a trifle too parochial, and the actions of the protagonists just a bit too easy to project before they occur. i honestly can say i didnt like a single person here; in attempting to show their flaws, lee ignores their decency. that aside, there are images that will stay with you a long time -- but as i said earlier, this should have been the heralding of a directorial career, not the peak.

This underrated 1990 film directed by Richard Pearce (Country, Leap of Faith) features exceptionally nuanced performances by both Sissy Spacek (Coal Miner's Daughter) and Whoopi Goldberg (Ghost) in a story set against the backdrop of the emerging civil rights movement of the 1950s South. Spacek plays a Southern socialite who becomes gradually enlightened by the plight of her housekeeper, played by Whoopi Goldberg, as she struggles to raise her family amid the increasing turmoil, prejudice, and violence around her. A well-done treatment of an important period of American history, The Long Walk Home is an effective and accurate period drama. It is also an opportunity to see fine, understated performances by two very popular actresses in an earnest and socially conscious setting. --Robert Lane

4 out of 5 stars Dignity and grace.......2007-01-19

Great movie about the power of standing or in this case walking for what you believe in. The dynamics between men and women, women and women, employer and employee, families, etc. etc. Buy this movie.

4 out of 5 stars Good history lesson.......2006-03-13

This film is first of all a good movie with fine acting. I also use it in the classroom to show 8th graders what was the situation in the South at the time of the famous Montgomery bus strike for African Americans. In addition I use the film to reflect what was the role of white women during that era. It shows the rise of both groups of women to be powerful forces.

4 out of 5 stars A Touching story.......2005-12-02

The Long walk home was a very touching story about the discrimination against African Americans in 1955, as well as the Bus boycott which took place. This movie is an excellent depiction of the time period. While there is some harsh language, violence, and racial slurs, these three things really help to depict what the feelings towards the African Americans really were. This movie even shows how a person could be moved when they find out the situation of another person.

Another thing that was enjoyable about the movie was there was the absence of two prominent figures of the equality movement, Martin Luther King and Rosa Parks. This movie really helped to show the situation of the normal person, who had to go to work and church as well as take care of their family.

"The Long Walk Home" was a very good movie and was really moving. I would suggest it to everyone, especially because it shows what some people had to go through for their freedom.

4 out of 5 stars THOUGHT PROVOKING DRAMA.......2005-11-29

Earnest film chronicling the bus boycott in 1955 Montgomery, Alabama. Oscar winners Sissy Spacek and Whoopi Goldberg star as a well to do Southern socialite and her quite, but courageous maid. When Whoopi joins in the boycott against riding the buses, she finds herself walking to her job for Spacek three days a week with Sissy secretly "carrying" her the other two days. Sissy doesn't want her bigoted and politically motivated husband and his brother (Dwight Schultz and Dylan Baker, both very good) to find out. The movie is more an indictment against the racial prejudice of its times rather than a purely biographical flick, but director Richard Pearce wisely keeps the focus on his two leads who deliver outstandingly understated performances. A good movie to remind us of the ugly scar of racism that fomented our country for so long.

3 out of 5 stars What A Shame!!!.......2005-11-13

I have actually purchased this DVD twice. Both were distributed by different studios. Both times, I was burned. The quality of this DVD is terrible! From the very begining, the picture is so blurry, it's unbearable. I had seen the film before I purchased the DVD, so I already know how great the story is. However, I would not recommend buying this DVD. It just is not worth the hassle.

Produced for PBS series POV, this Oscar-nominated documentary takes an up-close-and-personal look at the occupation of Iraq. While War Tapes explores the situation from the American standpoint, My Country, My Country presents the other side of the equation. And while fellow nominee James Longley (Iraq in Fragments) combines Sunni, Shi'a, and Kurdish perspectives, Laura Poitras (Flag Wars) sets her sights on one Sunni, Baghdad-based Dr. Riyadh. She also takes detours to check in with the US military, UN personnel, and Australian security contractors supervising the 2005 elections, either directly or indirectly (as one notes about the occupation, "It's not all bad, you can have some fun"). Dr. Riyadh, a physician and city council member, runs for a seat on the National Assembly in order to help rebuild his country. Poitras began shooting in 2004 and spent eight months with her protagonist, his wife, and their children. She captures a time of doubt and fear, as shells are constantly exploding in the background. Just as the Iraqi people are wary of the outsiders trying to restore democracy, there is only so much insiders, like Dr. Riyadh, can do. Elegantly shot by the director and set to a mournful score by Kadhum Al Sahir, My Country, My Country may be pessimistic about the prospects for present-day Iraq, but Poitras gives one decent man a voice. For that it remains an invaluable document of its time and place. --Kathleen C. Fennessy

Description

Working alone in Iraq over eight months, American filmmaker Laura Poitras follows Iraqi physician Dr. Riyadh—father of six and Sunni political candidate -- for an unforgettable journey into the heart of war-ravaged Iraq in the months leading up to the January 2005 elections. An outspoken critic of the occupation, Dr. Riyadh is equally passionate about building democracy in Iraq. Yet all around him, he sees only chaos, as his waiting room fills each day with patients suffering the physical and mental effects of ever-increasing violence. Dramatically interwoven into his personal journey is the landscape of U.S. military occupation, Australian private security contractors, and the U.N. officials who orchestrated the elections. Luminously photographed and emotionally complex, MY COUNTRY, MY COUNTRY captures the downward spiral of one man caught in the tragic contradictions of the U.S. occupation of Iraq and its project to spread democracy in the Middle East.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Baghdad on the eve of elections . . ........2007-04-23

Given more recent events in Iraq, this wonderful documentary is already somewhat dated, made as it was during the months leading up to the first democratic elections in that country, but it marks an important moment in history as well and deserves a viewing for that reason alone. The central figure, a medical doctor in a Baghdad neighborhood, Dr. Ryadh is a member of a Sunni party, running for election to the country's new parliament. Tenacious in his commitment to his community, he is pulled in many directions by the needs of his patients, his prospective constituents, his friends and family. His story is played out against a background of continuing gunfire and explosions and an unending stream of complaints from those who have lost faith in the American presence and hope for the future. In one sequence a colleague's son is kidnapped for ransom by insurgents, and we watch as the father despairs of ever seeing him alive again.

Meanwhile, cameras visit other parts of the country, including Kurdistan, where anti-Sunni and pro-American opinion prevail. We also follow the months of behind-the-scenes preparation for elections and the precautions taken by contracted security firms, with commentary by international election observers. Branded by some as a "show" for the benefit of the White House and boycotted by Dr. Ryadh's own Sunni party, the election draws long lines of voters anyway, and we watch with appropriate amazement the risks voters take to participate in a process that is taken so lightly in the West. Assembled in a way more akin than most documentaries to the ideals of cinema verite, the film has no narration and leaves it to the audience to interpret much of what it is viewing. A fine and important work.

4 out of 5 stars An Intimate View.......2007-04-21

"My Country, My Country" is an opportunity to see Iraq through the life of an Iraqi doctor and his family. The camera perspective is personal and I felt as though I was right there with Dr. Riyadh. The airborne scenes and the country vistas complimented the intimate nature of the coverage of the people involved.

The consequences of the American occupation of Iraq are complex. The politics are complex. I didn't feel imposed upon by some moral message, but rather felt I had a chance to see the depth and interrelationship of viewpoints that allowed me to think for myself. This movie did not clear a lot up for me, but rather gave me a sense of familiarity with the people - a chance to see them as real people and not abstractions. I felt empowered by a far more unprocessed opportunity to gather information for thought.

I wholeheartedly recommend seeing "My Country, My Country" to people whose understanding of "Iraq" comes from nightly news reports or newspaper articles. I believe this documentary is an outstanding way to learn more about the circumstances of recent Iraqi history.

5 out of 5 stars watch this and watch another old 1974 documentary.......2007-02-17

'hearts and minds', then you would know that after we lost the vietnam war, lost so many american soldiers there, the lesson never was learned by those who run our government, president or politicians on the hills. because these people never lost a son or a daughter in a self-righteous and self-serving war. a country full of one kind of people blinded by the 'patriotism' big word, but never understood those invasions and wars got nothing to do with 'patriotism' at all. we invaded other peoples' countries, destroyed their homes, killed their people by first using the excuse of 'fighting the communism' in vietnam, now we just change one word of such slogan, 'fighting the terrorism' to invade iraq. i just don't know who gave us the right to meddle other peoples countries and their lives under the big word of 'patriotism'. what patriotism got anything to do with this godforsaken unjustifiable wars. we ruined their lives but still shamelessly claiming that we're helping them, we're liberating them. we're repeatedly making the same mistakes and tragedies again and again to other peoples and to ourselves. that's why the peoples in other countries when they fought or fignt against us never changed their unique slogan : 'fighting the american imperialism'. and imperialism equals another word in their eyes: 'colonization'.
so far, we americans were blinded by the ridiculous patriotism custom tailored by the corporate friendly government, gave you a false belief that invasion of iraq was justified and the majority iraqi people were so grateful and appreciated what we did to them, by watching this my country, my country, we knew that country is not your country, it's other peoples' country and we absolutely have no right to interfere their own problems. if you are not convinced enough, then you must watch the oscar nominated 'iraq in fragments', to see how the general iraqi people really feel about our 'war on terror(ism)', it'd give you clearer picture what we did to iraq and the irqi people.
why we could never learn?

When Rosa Parks was arrested in 1955 for refusing to give up her seat on the bus to a white man, the Reverend Martin Luther King was but a modest young Baptist minister suddenly thrust into the leadership of local bus boycott. What started as a one-day protest of unfair bus laws turned into the 381-day boycott that gave birth to the civil rights movement. This riveting, rousing made-for-cable drama meticulously recounts the challenges the protest faced. Jeffrey Wright (Basquiat) is excellent as King, capturing his charisma and rousing speeches while grounding his heroism in human vulnerability and fear, but Boycott reminds us that he was only one of the thousands of ordinary people roused into extraordinary action in the name of equality and social justice. That portrait of everyday heroes changing the course of history remains the film's most rousing message. --Sean Axmaker

4 out of 5 stars "We will not be free until we rest!" 381 days that shook the U.S.......2007-04-14

In December 1955,Rosa Parks wilfully refused to give up her seat to a white man on a Montgomery,Alabama bus.Her refusal sparked what was to become an 381 day boycott of the Montgomery transit system that saw the rise of fledgling minister and newcomer Dr.Martin Luther King and what was to become what is now recognised as "The Birth of the Civil Rights Movement".HBO has turned in a tremendous, nearly moment-by-moment account of that period of time, the events that transpired and the main figures that were intimately involved in the boycott that found itself going all the way to The Supreme Court. This film is taut with tension from the very opening scene and keeps propelling forward with unrelenting mercy as one woman's brave act of defiance of segregation law spearheads an entire awakening of conscience and soul of not only the African-American population butultimately of the country at large. This film is the most excellent starting place for all students of AMERICAN history. We cannot all be free until all are free!
One interesting point that this film showed was that MLK Jr.(amazing as always Jeffrey Wright!) IMMEDIATELY left the pulpit in the middle of his message to go to his family when he is informed that his home had been bombed. He didn't just sit there looking puzzled and continued what he was doing as some other famous leader did!
4 1/2****'s for this totally compelling , gripping and well made docudrama.

5 out of 5 stars The story of Rev. Martin Luther King, Jr. and the Montgomery Bus Boycott.......2006-05-28

On December 1, 1955, Rosa Parks refused to give up her seat on a bus in Montgomery, Alabama so that a white passenger could sit down. Her arrest for this act of civil disobedience sparked the Montgomery Bus Boycott, one of the most significant and successful efforts against racial segregation in American history. The HBO movie "Boycott" looks at what happened when the one-day boycott of the Montgomery buses called because of the Parks' arrest became a protracted effort that last more than a year. The focus is not on Parks (Iris Little-Thomas), but on the young Rev. Martin Luther King, Jr. (Jeffrey Wright), who becomes the spokesman for the boycott and had his first leadership role in the Civil Rights Movement. However, while the focus in on King, the work of other leaders, such as Ralph Abernathy (Terrence Howard) and Jo Ann Robinson (CCH Pounder), as well as the ordinary citizens who walked to work and drove the car pools, are covered and honored as well.

In watching how King becomes a leader be sure you continue to pay attention to how the city government of Montgomery tried to break the boycott, because there was a complexity to this struggle that goes beyond the simple idea that Negroes in the city stopped riding the bus. The escalating efforts by the city not only served to solidify King's believes in the value of nonviolence, but also revealed the hypocrisy of using the law to enforce injustice. There is also the interesting relationship between King and Bayard Rustin (Erik Todd Dellums), who actually sees King as failing to live up to Gandhi's example because there are armed men protecting Coretta Scott King (Carmen Ejogo) and his daughter. King is a revered figure in the telling of this story, but he is not turned into a walking saint, and neither the writing nor Wright's performance tries to make him anything more than a man trying to make the boycott work against great odds, and the concern of Daddy King (Mike Hodge) for his son's safety foreshadow's King's assassination in 1968, even though I think few viewers will not have his fate always in the back of their mind while watching "Boycott." The only serious complaint is that the movie seems to end somewhat abruptly because what turns out to be the straw that breaks the camel's back does not strike us as such at the time, so when victory is achieved it comes as something of a surprise.

Writers Herman Daniel Farrell and Timothy J. Sexton, working from Stewart Burns' book "Daybreak of Freedom," come up with creative ways to keep things movie in a movie that is about a boycott that lasts over 380-days (the exact number is in dispute). You might think there would be a problem in showing people not riding a bus, but seeing the Negroes of Montgomery walking and car pooling to get to work becomes a potent series of images. We also have folks on both sides of the issue addressing the camera with what constitute quick asides that give a sense of what people were thinking, which includes some rather ugly thoughts. The bit of creativity where what Rosa Parks was thinking before her fateful moment in history, consisting of images seen on the window of the bus, is not repeated. If you watch "Boycott" again after exhausting the special features, most of which require you to go frame by frame to read about the people and times, you will understand more of what is happening in the various montages that tie scenes together. This is important becuase "Boycott" is trying to be educational as well as inspirational.

5 out of 5 stars Powerful.......2006-04-14

A good movie with strong and moving actors.Jeffery Wight at some of his best work as Dr.King and what can I say about Terence Howard. This young man is on his way. This is one movie that should be seen by everyone. A very important and uplifting time in history.

5 out of 5 stars A King for all time.......2006-02-26

I am a late arrival to the career of Jeffrey Wright. The first time I saw him was in Angels in America. He caught my attention and I was riveted to every scene he was in. Wright as Dr. King was a strike of genius. He nails the performance with conviction and compassion. Wright steals every scene he appears in. The project as a whole is very impressive and I commend HBO for investing in this and other projects in which the lives and interests of African Americans are the focus. Terrence Howard is also a figure to watch out for in the future. Howard's performance is powerful especially with his facial expressions. Carmen Ejogo's performance is warm and supportive to the Dr. King character. In playing her part though, she was able to emote what she feels for her husband as she and Wright are real life husband and wife.

There is one moment in this film where Dr. King is overcome with fear and prays to God for strength and it is one of Wright's strongest scenes. It shows exaclty the fear that one might feel if suddenly realizing that you might not live to long just because of standing forwhat was right. Wright's speeches are very King like and in delivering his lines, Wright takes on a slowness of speech that was characteristic of the way Dr. King spoke. He spoke slowly as to give thought first to every word before before it was uttered.

I do find at times that the handheld camera is a bit much and can be a distraction but it can be easily overlooked.

I urge you to buy this film and watch it with your children. It is simply brilliant.

3 out of 5 stars A good movie.......2004-06-15

The only bad point was when people looked at the camera and talked. I learned a lot though.

Much of this PBS documentary was filmed on the first federal holiday to honor Martin Luther King Jr., when a number of his former associates as well as notable admirers gathered in Atlanta to commemorate his life. The interviews with former President Jimmy Carter, Congressman John Lewis, Bill Cosby, Jesse Jackson, Dick Gregory, Joan Baez, and Bishop Desmond Tutu are moving, but they are no match for the oratory of Dr. King himself. Thankfully, In Remembrance of Martin also makes use of a great amount of archival material, which includes news footage of Dr. King in the years when he was rising to the forefront of the civil rights movement. Dr. King is seen being fingerprinted after his arrest during the Montgomery bus boycott, making his famous "I Have a Dream" speech at the Lincoln Memorial in 1963, and accepting the Nobel Peace Prize in 1964. In addition to being a tribute to Dr. King and his legacy, the inclusion of news films of Klan rallies and violent scenes of police using fire hoses and clubs on peaceful demonstrators makes this video an introduction to the drama and passion of the entire civil rights movement. --Robert J. McNamara

5 out of 5 stars Important Memories.......2007-01-20

Martin Luther King Jr.'s spririt really comes through here as his friends/colleagues recount their experiences with him and what his legacy means to them. Footage of him in more casual moments and from the earliest to the last years of activism also round out the picture of his life. His powerful oratory and charisma is on full display. The interviews are dated but do not detract from the power of the message.

Since this is an eulogistic film you won't get a picture of the historical or "human" MLK, including the philandering that could have seriously weakened his moral leadership had it been publicized. But then again this is not a documentary as much as it is a recounting of MLK's tremendous accomplishments in the public sphere that went a long way toward healing some of America's oldest spiritual wounds.

3 out of 5 stars Dr. King.......2005-06-19

This documentary was made during the first National Dr. King holiday. Thus, it's a bit dated. This came before Malcolm X became the more trendy icon and has somewhat eclipsed Dr. King. However, as Michael Dyson later wrote, Dr. King is still a powerful force with which to be reckoned.

You can tell this was made by a local television station because it's made entirely in video, rather than film. This is a unique work because there is no narrator, it's just important figure reminescing on Dr. King and actual footage of Dr. King and his most famous speeches.

It's 20 years later and many of those interviewed (Jimmy Carter, Coretta King, Jesse Jackson, John Lewis) are still alive and heavily involved in progressive activism. Mrs. King is ever regal and warm. She is a pioneering example of Black Womanhood. Dr. King's sister's voice sounds JUST like his. Still, this documentary focused on famous MEN remembering King. I wish this work had more women interviewees, and not just Dr. King's female relatives. Surely, Maya Angelou, Alice Walker, or Maxine Waters could have been asked to contribute to this work.

This is a nice, easy piece to watch. Perhaps it would be the perfect item for parents and teachers to share with children during the Dr. King holiday.

Amazon.com essential video
