The biblical story of Esther, the Jewish woman who saved her people when they faced annihilation, is told in this production featuring British actress Louise Lombard in the title role and F. Murray Abraham as Mordecai, Esther's cousin and foster father. As a girl living under Persian rule, Esther was essentially kidnapped and taken into the harem of the king, Xerxes. The king, taken by her beauty, made her his queen, and as dramatized in the film, she found herself involved in a delicate balancing act between the ruling Persians and her own Jewish people. While this is a fairly elaborate production with a solid supporting cast, it proceeds at a relaxed pace and never quite takes off dramatically. But it does provide a solid telling of Esther's story, and if considered as something of a docudrama, it's successful. The story is clearly told of how the king's chief minister, Haman, had hoped to see the Jews annihilated, but thanks to Esther's intercession the Jews were able to defend themselves and destroy their enemies (events which are celebrated at the Jewish Feast of Purim). The production does provide much of the period flavor of ancient life, and the major facets of the story and portrayals of the characters coincide with biblical accounts. --Robert J. McNamara

simply put...BUY IT!.......2007-03-04
It helps us remember the Biblical story and the intervention of the God of Israel in His People's lives. It also helps to be reminded that satan/the evil one works to try and stop God from keeping His Covenants with His People (including those of Judah during the account of Esther), as well reminds us of the lineage of the Savior's mother [Mary] which may have been in those who experienced this story of "Purim." Satan has always tried to "thwart" Yahweh's Plans.
We RECOMMEND buying this Biblically accurate (very close) movie on Purim, from "The Bible" series films. If you buy this version, YOU WON'T BE DISAPPOINTED. But getting the "One Night With The King" version is somewhat disappointing due to it's liberality with the Biblical account.
This "The Bible- Esther" film is very enjoyably accurate and rewarding! The authentic feeling of the movie props/sets, the political issues happening at the time, the differing types of Jews at that point in history, and the power of the Gentile nations are all given time in this movie. Get it! The actors do well, and you FEEL the issues at hand. A spirituality is brought forth, just as the Spirituality you pull from the Biblical account Itself.
My family loves to watch this movie over and over. We make it a point, as well, to watch it every Purim...though we enjoy it throughout the year too.
Verry good especially compared to others.......2007-02-27
This is one of my favorite movies from the "Bible Series". They managed to give Nehemiah and Ezra some roles in the story as well. The dialog between Mordecai and Ezra is very entertaining. Somehow it always turns out that the one rebuking the other accidentally does exactly the opposite, just a few moments later.
Unfortunately nothing is perfect. There's quite some visible female flesh in some scenes, and the king could have done with a little more "royalty" in his character. But still I like the way this movie was done. Good acting and a good soundtrack.
movie well worth watching.......2006-11-04
This movie is a beautiful account of the Biblical story of Queen Esther. I especially enjoyed F. Murray Abrahams portrayal of Mordecai, Esther's uncle. The movie was authentically done.
A faithful portrayal.......2006-07-21
This was a very well made portrayal of the story of Esther. Her night with the king was handled very tastefully, however parents may want to preview it before letting their kids watch it, as every family is different. It had both good acting, high production values, and remained (for the most part) scriptural. Much of the dialogue was lifted straight from the pages of the bible. While it did have some minor differences from the biblical account (Esther and Mordecai having a conversation across a wall instead of through messengers for one) these details do not detract any from the story itself. An excellent film.
Mostly well acted except..........2006-07-08
A faithful adaptation to scripture yet the movies portrayal of the king was terrible. He was presented as as a naive, stupid, irresponsible child that drank too much. This did not give Esther much credability for loving such a silly man.

A good story but a little confusing.........2006-12-10
I liked the messages of this video - stand by your family and don't be afraid to do what's right - but the story was a little confusing. My family loves Veggie Tales and my kids watch them almost daily but this video wasn't as good as some of the others.

Bible Time Classics.......2007-08-18
This is horrible!!!!!! I can not believe that other people gave this a good rating. I wish I have never bought this product. In the past, I have bought a number of classical bible movies, and they were GREAT!! But this, I can't even return this hunk of junk! Do not under any circumstance buy this collection. To tell you the truth, it doesn't deserve any stars at all. The films is all blurry, the back ground music is warped. The plot of the stories are truly B-rated. From now, I will be alot more cautious when purchasing my bible collection movies.
Poor sound quality........2007-07-08
The biblical accounts are not represented with a great deal of accuracy.
Much creative license is used in the portrayals.
But the biggest drawback is poor sound quality.
bible Time Clasics David and Goliath.......2007-05-08
Fast service. Poor Quality DVD but Considering the age of the movies it was well worth the low price.
Movie quality varies.......2007-03-02
The quality of the four movies in this collection vary greatly in quality. I do applaud the attempt to save some of the cinema for future generations and I found these versions of three bibilical stories and one pseudo-biography interesting variations on their stories. You also get the chance to see some young fairly famous stars before they were very famous at all.
The movies included are:
"David and Goliath" starring Orson Welles and Ivo Payer
"Joseph and His Brethren" starring Goeffrey Horne and Robert Morley
"Martin Luther" starring Niall MacGinnis and John Ruddock
"Esther and the King" starring Joan Collins and Richard Egan.

Outstanding Educational Jewel.......2005-04-28
You and your children will enjoy this presentation. The story is told in a simple, child friendly, and creative manner. I had a great time expanding on the topics introduced in the film. Character, trust, faith, prejudice, and many other topics can be expanded on during and following the presentation. A absolute treasure!
Awesome, Amazing, Entertaining, and More.......2004-04-20
This movie, whether on VHS or DVD is a must for everyone who loves animation...and a great story. This movie has it all. I viewed this movie when it first came out in 2000 (or around there) and no matter how many times I have seen it (about twenty now) it is still fun to see. It is great for kids, adults, and in-betweens. The music is perfect, the script is perfect, and the characters are so enchanting, you simply have no choice but toi buy this amazing piece of work...so what are you waiting for? Me to buy it for you? Sorry, you'll have to buy this time. Click that "BUY" button. You won't be sorry! VeggieTales Rock!
God Bless.

A masterpiece.......2003-12-27
This DVD is quite a bit different from the other Veggie Tales' DVDs. First, this is no counter top beginning or ending and no silly song with Larry. Instead, the entire time is spent on the story of Esther. That is a good thing since I don't believe that any of this could be cut and still tell the same story. What sets this movie apart from other veggie tales is the animation. They have definitely taken their animation to a new level in this movie with fantastic details in many of the scenes.
For humor their is a great song about Lost Puppies and then the references to the Godfather throughout the movie. Other musical numbers were equally good.
This is definitely one of their better movies.
Different in Tone, but a Strong Addition to the Series.......2003-08-28
Esther represents a slight departure for the VeggieTales crew. In focusing on the retelling of this story from the Bible, some of the traditional humorous elements from previous videos are gone. Instead, the video focuses completely on the story of the girl picked to be queen who discovers God has placed her there in order to save her people. But will she have the courage to follow through?
Big Idea did a good job of packing all the twists and turns of the story from the Bible into 35 minutes while still making it appropriate for kids. My favorite change was "The Land of Perpetual Tickling." I completely missed the references to "The Godfather," but Iýve never seen those movies to begin with. Still, this explains the reference to "family" and not "the Jews" in the story line. While I missed the "Silly Songs with Larry" segment, it would have broken the flow and tone of the story, and I'm glad it was left out. Instead, we have the hilarious "Lost Puppies" song from the audition scene. And Esther gets several great songs. They might not be the bouncy, upbeat songs we're used to hearing, but they are beautiful songs of God's protection that fit the video well.
This movie was visually the most stunning and complex they had tried to date, and this transfers well to the new DVD release. As always, the DVD contains a behind the scenes featurette and some Easter eggs that give a better idea of what went into the production of this episode. There are some fun things for kids to do (even I enjoyed the maze). But the highlight is the audio commentary with Phil and Mike. This seems to be one of the better ones. They talk a lot about the leaps forward they tried with this episode and what they learned from it. Plus we get to hear why using vegetables is a blessing and a saddlement.
Always searching for ways to expand the series, Big Idea hit the mark with this excellent video. It's a little different then the others, but if you'll give it a fair chance, you'll see it just might be their best yet.
Esther the Great!.......2003-08-15
Besides the sing-a-long video, this is my kids favorite veggie-tale movie. Of course this is one of my favorite Bible stories anyway. The songs are great and funny as usual. Even my 1 yr. old has learned how to sing them! It has even prompted discussions with my 9 & 11 yr olds as to the similarities & differences between the Bible version & the veggie tale version. Even though veggie tales makes their stories fun & silly, they still keep the meaning & principles intact. P.S. Essie has a pretty voice (that was from my 4 yr. old). :)

The story of Esther for children.......2007-05-24
We bought this 30 minutes animated movie to introduce our daughters age 4 and 5 to the story of Esther. The 2D animation is well done (directed by a former Disney manager), with nice Persian empire backgrounds, and the story stays true to the biblical account, leaving our the violence (killings of Haman and his family) and focusing on themes of faith, prayer and being tactful. Now my daughters know Esther was a hero for her people and why.
Product Description
When a modern-day girl named Amelia (Lauren Faber) faces a big challenge in her life, her mother (Lori Broadhead) teaches her about the power of fasting by sharing the story of a heroine from the Bible. Esther (Summer Naomi Smart), an orphan raised by a relative named Mordecai (Marvin Payne), is chosen from all the maidens in the land to become queen. While becoming a queen is where most fairy tales end, this is just the beginning of the true story of this courageous woman who must risk her life to save her people from a treacherous plan of the charmingly wicked prince Haman (Jeff Stevens). Through reliving the story of Esther, Amelia gains an understanding of the power of fasting and how it can help her learn courage. Your whole family will enjoy this musical journey into Amelia s imagination as she brings to life this amazing story that will tickle your funny bone and touch your heart.

One of my favorites in the Liken series.......2007-05-19
This movie teaches so many great lessons - and is so entertaining at the same time. My favorite scenes are "What More Could a King Want" and "It's Great to Be the King To Be." - fun costumes, makeup, dancing - a real musical-theater-on-film kind of movie.
