John Candy has one of his finest opportunities in this film by John Hughes (The Breakfast Club) about a perpetual screw-up (Candy) who gets his act together enough to watch over his brother's kids effectively. The late actor scores big points resurrecting elements of his more decadent persona from SCTV days, but he also has some persuasively touching, sentimental moments. Hughes's direction is not as focused as it was only a few years before, but there's no mistaking his touch. The DVD release has a widescreen presentation, production notes, biographies, Dolby sound, optional Spanish and French soundtracks. --Tom Keogh

John Hughes made some great comedies in th 80's and 90's, and this is one of them.

5 out of 5 stars Uncle Buck Rocks!.......2007-02-18

Uncle Buck is absolutely hilarious, and no better actor then John Candy to play this role! Uncle Buck is a Slobby, Unorganized, Middle-Aged Man, and is asked by his brother to stay over his house, so he can take care of his 3 kids, while he and his wife are out of town visiting her sick father. Even though Uncle Buck seems like a careless slob, we get to see his paternal side as we see how he actually really cares for each of these children. Best scenes are the ones where he has to look after the oldest child who is a rebellious teenage girl, also starring in this film is a very young Macaluay Culkin and Gaby Hoffman as the 2 younger children. This movie is a classic, and I totally recommend it! Not to mention that it's a John Hughes film.

In the second season of her renowned show (1993-1999), Fran Drescher sizzles as Nanny Fine, continuing her inimitable style of witty one-liners, physical comedy, and fashion flair, which unequivocally establishes The Nanny as one of the freshest and funniest sitcoms of the '90s. From the uproarious season opener, "Fran Lite"--where Maxwell Sheffield (Charles Shaughnessy) dates a carbon copy of Fran--the 26 episodes in this three-disc set are breezy and brilliant. As the season unfolds, Fran is mistaken for a nurse, arrested for kidnapping a baby, and cast in a Broadway production. Sparks of affection continue to fly between Miss Fine and Mr. Sheffield (don't miss "A Kiss is Just a Kiss"), while the razor-sharp repartee of C.C. Babcock (Lauren Lane) and Niles (Daniel Davis) further fuels the hilarity. Guest stars include Efrem Zimbalist Jr., Sally Jesse Raphael, Erik Estrada, Shari Lewis and Lambchop, and Billy Ray Cyrus. Season One's supporting cast returns en masse, with more stage time given to Renée Taylor (as Sylvia Fine) and Ann Morgan Guilbert (as Yetta). Yet it is Drescher who is larger-than-life, stealing every show in a manner reminiscent of Lucille Ball, while peppering the plot with liberal doses of ribald, often risqué humor. Bonus material omitted. (Ages 12 and older) --Lynn Gibson

And that's only the beginning.

This 3-disc set includes all 26 original episodes from season two that will have you saying T.G.I.F. Thank Goodness It's Fran.

4 out of 5 stars Holds Up Nicely.......2007-08-13

I often buy older US TV shows on DVD to provide familiar background noise while puttering around the house. Quite a bit of it (like Married with Children and The Simpsons) simply do not age well. The Nanny is an exception.

I admit I was a bit of a fan when it was on in the US, but still the DVD is well worth watching again; familiar friends who are a pleasure to see again.

5 out of 5 stars The Nanny season two.......2007-08-09

The Nanny is great fun and great laughs. I think Fran Drescher, is one of the funniest creative commedy actors of our generation and is grossly overlooked. Anyone that takes the time to watch The Nanny season one and two, will be begging for the remaining seasons. The entire cast is talented and blend together beautifully. The butler is a laugh all by himself.
So please bring on the remainder of The Nanny's sitcoms.

5 out of 5 stars Really funny!.......2007-07-27

The first and the second season are great. The humor in both seasons doesn't go down in quality, it gets better! I love them! I laugh and laugh with the Nanny. I can't wait for the other seasons to come out to get them.

it has been a year since the release of season 2...are they gonna pull a "JOEY" and just not release any more "Nanny"? they did the same thing with "Murphey Brown"...it is my opinion that if they don't plan to release, in a timely manner, all seasons of a show...they shouldn't release any of them...it's just rude...and a waste of money...i can't complete my collection...it's just sick and wrong.

Sony brings to DVD the first season of this one-of-a-kind sitcom starring Fran Drescher as the warm-hearted, nasal-voiced nanny from Queens who lands a job caring for three children of a wealthy, widowed Broadway producer from Manhattan. During the show's six-year run (1993-1999), Drescher dazzles as Fran Fine in a role she created and developed (as writer and producer in several episodes) and obviously relishes, whether she's flirting, whining, sparring, or showcasing her sensational wardrobe. The three-disc collection features 22 episodes beginning with "The Pilot," when Fran knocks on the Sheffield's door and is mistakenly hired as their new nanny, establishing the show's shtick of "blue collar meets blue blood." Immediate chemistry between Nanny Fine and Maxwell Sheffield (Charles Shaughnessy, "Days of Our Lives") fuels the storylines while the sarcastic repartee of Sheffield's assistant, C.C. Babcock (Lauren Lane) and Niles the Butler (Daniel Davis) further ignites the entertainment. Season highlights include "The Butler, the Husband, the Wife, and Her Mother," when the family enters a parallel universe in a hilarious turn of events; and "Imaginary Friend," the season's turning point where Drescher's physical comedy (inspired by Lucille Ball) is given free reign. Celebrity guests include Carol Channing, Cloris Leachman, and Patti LaBelle (in the finale). Don't miss the bonus material: a heartwarming "making-of" retrospective with the cast, and Drescher's audio commentary during "I Don't Remember Mama." Mild profanity and sexual innuendo. (Ages 12 and older) --Lynn Gibson

With hairy warts, a stern-looking unibrow and one extremely protruding buck-tooth, Nanny McPhee is a wonderfully comedic substitute for Mary Poppins in this entertaining family fantasy. By loosely adapting Christianna Brand's Nurse Matilda children's books of the 1960s, Oscar®-winning screenwriter Emma Thompson (Sense and Sensibility) has also given herself the plum role of Nanny McPhee, who can tame even the most unruly children with a tap of her magic walking stick. Her latest challenge is the bratty brood of a recent widower Mr. Brown (Colin Firth), who's under pressure to find a new wife or lose his much-needed allowance from wealthy Aunt Adelaide (a tailor-made role for Angela Lansbury). His love for scullery maid Evangeline (Kelly Macdonald) remains unspoken as he wincingly woos the eagerly merry widow Mrs. Quickly (Celia Imrie), but Brown's raucous rugrats have a plan to make things right, especially after they've come under the benevolent influence of Nanny McPhee, whose peculiar brand of discipline works wonders for everyone involved. Both quintessentially British and universally appealing, this wildly colorful comedy (thanks to a bold palette of costume and production design) was capably directed by Kirk Jones, whose appreciation for comic actors was equally apparent in his critically acclaimed 1998 comedy Waking Ned Devine. With just a hint of darkness to offset the whimsy, Nanny McPhee offers a splendid match of director, cast and material, guaranteed to please Wallace & Gromit fans and anyone else with a taste for British zaniness. --Jeff Shannon

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Colors Make This A Great-Looking Disc & A Fun Story.......2007-09-05

This was a pleasant surprise, much better than I anticipated. I figured Emma Thompson would be good in the title role because you can usually count on her to be entertaining in form or another, cerebrally, emotionally or comically. What I didn't figure on was the fun, extremely colorful story, overall. This DVD was like a banana split for your senses - all kinds of wild treats for the eyes and ears.....to taste, so to speak.

This film features outrageous color schemes from the word "go," from the interior of the "Brown's" house, to everyone's apparel to the scenery outside. It almost reminded me "The Cat In The Hat" with its crazy colors.

All the characters are as exaggerated as the colors, too. The kids may be brats but they aren't bad once they get some needed discipline and love from Nanny McPhee. They are still fun to watch, and all are quite different in appearance and mannerisms. Thompson is a howl as Mary Poppins-like McPhee and so are the supporting characters. There were no sappy songs, either. This is not a musical.

Only the final wedding segment got carried away with juvenile silliness; the rest was fun for adults and well as the kids, who must have loved this all the way through. This is simply good entertainment and highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars Shades of Mary Poppins!.......2007-08-23

This truly hilarious comedy is supported by a brilliant caste: Emma Thompson (Nanny McPhee) and Colin Firth (the father of seven unruly children) whose wife is deceased. He tries a succession of nannies (17) and they all leave within a few days, the last one in just one day! The casting of the children is outstanding and the unruly actions are unimaginable! At last Nanny McPhee agrees to do the job--with a three point program which she pursues doggedly and finally successfully. Knowing that she must leave, the father looks for a mother for his brood. He can't find anyone willing to take on the task. But Nanny comes through for him--transforms a young kitchen maid, long with the family, into a beautiful and well educated young lady. The role of the mother is filled to everyone's satisfaction! A film you won't want to miss--entertainment for the entire family!

What's a director to do? Andy Tennant's previous film was the highly enjoyable Cinderella romance Ever After, which vanished from theaters and became a video hit. Then Tennant made this gorgeous, nonmusical version of Anna and the King, and once again felt the sting of box-office failure. Both films deserved better, and this Anna is certain to eventually find the appreciative audience that eluded it in theaters. In many ways, this delightful costume romance transcends the latter-day quaintness of The King and I to offer a more lavish and rewarding version of the story of Anna Leonowens, based on her diaries and first told in Margaret Landon's 1944 novel.

In an otherwise admirable performance (although many felt her miscast), Jodie Foster struggles with her Victorian accent as Anna, the grieving widow who arrives in Siam in 1860 with her young son. Having accepted a post as tutor for the many children of the polygamous King Mongkut (Chow Yun-Fat), Anna finds herself drawn to the progressive monarch, whose passions swirl in a turbulent political climate. If the chemistry isn't entirely there, this culture clash still has plenty of regal charm, and Luciana Arrighi's production design is appropriately magnificent. Humor and politics are given equal measure, and Chow Yun-Fat is arguably the most endearing king to date--powerful yet tender, forceful but anguished by the heavier burdens of leadership. Bai Ling's intense performance as the tragic lover Tuptim adds emotional depth to one of the most underrated films of 1999. --Jeff Shannon

1 out of 5 stars Unbox does not include subtitles for the Siamese!!!.......2007-07-09

I'm sure this is a great movie, but I rented it from Amazon's Unbox service. I don't speak a word of Siamese, and the Unbox version does not include any subtitles. I was unable to understand anything that did not involve someone talking to Anna - for instance, the situation with the traitor and whatever happened with the concubine. All I can say is that I am CERTAIN that I missed most of the movie because of this. I have requested a refund from Amazon and do not recommend that anyone rent this from Amazon Unbox. I don't know if their purchased videos include the proper subtitles, but the response I got from customer service was that Unbox does not support subtitles, so it's probably missing them too. What a disappointment!

1 out of 5 stars The King and I Admirers Will Be Bored.......2007-04-11

This film was a real let down. Jodie Foster was wasted in a familiar tale that wasn't told the way we remember it. Deborah Kerr and Yul Brynner keep their titles of Anna and the King.

5 out of 5 stars not your father's King and I.......2007-04-01

This was a pleasure-packed film from the opening scenery to the text at the end chronicling the changes brought about in Siam owing to the influence of Anna. The country and the people(at least those of the royal household) are absolutely beautiful. The king is one to whom it would be very easy to feel loyalty to.
After seeing the movie, I feel compelled to read the history of Siam, and thus, Thailand.

5 out of 5 stars Anna and the King.......2007-03-27

Very interesting remake of the King and I, though we older set missed the singing, it was put together and updated well. Jodie always gives a great performance!

5 out of 5 stars Entertaining and Captivating.......2007-03-22

This is a great movie to have in your library. It is basically a film along the lines of The King and I. Jodie Foster is the perfect match for her role. She grabs you and draws you in, making a personal connection with the characters. Chow Yun-Fat is, also, a very good fit for his role as emperor.
The film makes you take a good look at how personal realtionships within your own family are about the most important thing you have. It also draws attention to the importance of respecting others. I'm not going to use the word 'tolerance'...but for the closed-minded, tyranical types, this film will ease that person into realizing the many good qualities in other people.
Oh, and don't forget the falling-in-love portions of this movie. Crossing boundries for those forbidden pleasures alway make for a good time.
This is a great film for those who like to ride the emotional rollercoaster. You'll laugh, get ticked-off, cry, get the warm-fuzzies...you get the point.
So, grab your sweatheart, get a blanket, pop some popcorn, turn the lights down and enjoy this timeless work of art!

A classic coming-of-age tale on par with Anne of Avonlea and Little Women, Berkeley Square is worth watching over and over again. This 10-episode British miniseries will awe you with its erudite script, wonderfully believable characters, high-caliber production values, meticulous Edwardian details, and topnotch acting. In fact, you will join the growing multitudes who puzzle over why the BBC decided to stop after only 10 episodes.

In 1902 three young nannies find jobs in well-to-do London households and get to know each other. Naive farm girl Lydia finds an unfamiliar world both in city life and with the progressive-thinking family who employs her. Earnest, rule-abiding Matty is a hard-working East End girl who slowly learns to loosen up. And, after a tragic affair with the eldest son of a grand Yorkshire family, Hannah's life in London is full of chilling secrets and grave life-and-death decisions. --Tara Chace

2 out of 5 stars WHAT!!!.......2007-07-27

I loved the drama but BEWARE..how disapointing...WHAT.. is with the ending,I went threw my DVD thinking I had missed the other DVD!!!Checked with Amazon to see how many came in the set. It was just unfinished.. You really don't find out what happened to the women.

5 out of 5 stars Bygone days in jolly old England.......2007-06-03

This is a delightful miniseries. It depicts the class distinction between the haves and the have-nots and how defined the caste system was back in those days. The experiences of the Nanny and other servants in the household was dependent on the degree of compassion, or lack of it, shown by the family for whom they worked. This series does an excellent job of depicting this. It also illustrates the disassociated attitude of most parents towards their children, and the dependence of them upon their Nanny for love and security. I highly recommend this series to anyone who enjoys the days of yore in jolly old England.

4 out of 5 stars A Good But Not Great English Drama.......2007-05-13

English produced drama is one of my passions and this is a good representation of the genre. I enjoyed watching it the first time, but find that when I look over my collection to find something to watch once more, I pass it by. The acting is good, but the story is just a bit too unbelievable, a bit too pat. But if you love English drama, give it at least one look. You won't be sorry even if you, like I, feel it could have been even better.

2 out of 5 stars A Soap-opera which leaves you empty in the end........2007-04-06

Three girls become nannies in London in 1902. Each works for a different household. The three become friends as they meet in the park with their strollers.

The first five episodes of the ten are a pleasant, yet lively pace of intrigue within attractive English homes and parks.

The pleasantness gives way to intrigue as the scandals, which have been building, explode in episode six. You find you have been lulled into a soap-opera abounding in sin: fornication, adultery, lying, deceit, manslaughter, seduction, extortion, child endangerment and neglect, to name just a few. The film is far from the "warm-hearted family drama" advertised on the cover.

It is an enticing film. The story is intriguing. The film balances intrigue with pleasant dialogue; the actors are attractive in attractive costumes; the acting is fine within attractive surroundings. Children are present. All the good characters weakly display some virtue.

It is helpful to know that Laudanum is morphine derived from opium mixed with alcohol, sold over-the-counter then, to relieve pain and induce sleep. Doctors knew it was addictive, and deadly in too large a dose.

The characters draw you into the soap opera by displaying promising virtue, but then betraying that virtue (moving back and forth). Opposing minds within the same person. Science says that one mind must eventually win out.
« Red-head, Nanny Hannah Randall opposes child endangerment in one instance, but fails to inform the parents in another instance, who were due informing; and the endangerment continues. Hannah appears to wish to do Right, but fails to consistently act with the resolution of one with single mind to see Right through.
« The aunt expresses her good moral principles, but later gives way to extortion.
« The older nanny stands against the bad guy, but later makes a subtle statement justifying the seduction, extortion, and malice.
« The first half is pleasant, but in the end, a couple of the "good characters" have lied and deceived, causing devastating harm to another, taking away all the pleasantness. In the end, you have not experienced a world of cheer, humor, music, singing, fun, and characters to admire.

A thoughtful film does not need all the scandal. It is interesting enough with the three girls starting jobs as nannies, as servants, the pretty London parks, difficult bosses, other servants, friendships, the charm and mischief of the children, working at doing a good job, what a good nanny is. Add some fun, humor, music, singing, adventures, and characters coming to values to admire.

The lack of many good period films makes this pretty, intriguing, soap opera of technical ability, in which good does not win out, appear desirable. You will enjoy the 8 hours, but be left empty in the end, (Romance without Love). I will not keep it.

I recommend these better films: "Pride and Prejudice-2005, 1996, & 1940", "Wives and Daughters", "North and South", "Middlemarch", "All Creatures Great and Small", "Pollyanna-2002", "Heidi", "Anne of Green Gables", "Under the Greenwood Tree", and "Road to Avonlea seasons 1-6".

3 out of 5 stars Could have been..........2007-03-16

Better. It didn't meet my expectations. I think it was the way it was played out. It almost got a little bit monotonous. Wives and Daughters was way more to my liking and style.

Kay Thompson's literary classic comes to life in this TV movie starring a free-spirited 6-year-old living in New York's Plaza Hotel. Sofia Vassilieva lights up the screen as Eloise, bearing an uncanny resemblance to Hilary Knight's illustrated namesake, from her bright red ribbon to her dainty designer shoes. Equal parts irrepressible imp and cherubic charmer, Eloise has the run of the hotel under the (mostly) attentive eye of beloved Nanny, played "rawther" marvelously by the timeless Julie Andrews. As the Plaza prepares for its debutante ball, a young prince arrives incognito, who Eloise befriends in her usual dervish style. The cast's comic timing transforms otherwise seeming clichés into a masterful romp through several stories-within-a-story, whether it's Eloise matchmaking a romantic liaison for Nanny, or orchestrating reconciliation between the prince and his estranged father. A making-of featurette and art lesson by Hilary Knight round out this heartwarming package, a fitting tribute to Eloise's creator. (Ages 5 and older) --Lynn Gibson

Description

Based on the best-selling children's classic, ELOISE AT THE PLAZA brings one of literature's most beloved characters to life in a new heartwarming and hilarious movie that "is reason for celebration" (Orlando Sentinel). Eloise (Sofia Vassilieva) is a fun-loving little girl with a knack for finding adventure every place she looks. While under the care of her "rawther" wonderful nanny (Julie Andrews), Eloise tries to play matchmaker to a lonely prince and wrangle an invitation to the society event of the season. Join New York City's most adventurous six-year-old in this charming new family film. It's "as bright and quick-witted as its high-spirited heroine" (Newsday).

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Eloise at the Plaza.......2007-05-09

I'm an 8th grade Social Studies teacher. I use the Eloise book Eloise in Moscow as a symbol for the Cold War era. Since my students had no background in Eloise, they struggled with understanding the book. This video gives the students the needed backdrop into which to fit the required reading. The movie is delightfully funny and gives the students a peek into the culture of the times.

5 out of 5 stars Great story for children that parents won't mind watching a thousand times........2007-02-06

This movie is incredibly well done. Excellent casting and a charming story lead to a very engrossing tale of a mischievous six year old girl with a heart of gold who causes a lot of trouble in a way that real children love to watch, but at bottom, is a sweet kid who is just trying to fill her days living at the Plaza with fun. The movie is styled in a way that is asynchronous. The dresses are very fifties-ish, yet the cars are from the nineties. The music is very American Songbook, yet the props and cultural references are all over the map. The result is a timeless story that is appealing to adults and children alike. Any girl from age three up to 103 will like this story. Boys aged four or five through probably ten or eleven will love Eloise. Parents will love it because if their children get into one of those video ruts in which all they want to watch is Eloise, it is an enjoyable ninety minutes to which to listen. There is no violence, no inappropriate content of any kind, and no "scary bit", yet the movie still has a lot of texture and intrigue. In addition, Eloise, although not well-behaved, is, in certain ways, a decent role model for girls, expressing herself articulately, and solving her own problems (in the context of her own simultaneously privileged yet neglected little microcosm). I've seen this movie probably two dozen times now with my four year old daughter and her friends (which regularly include a six year old girl and a nine year old boy), and I (and they) never tire of it. I recommend it highly.

2 out of 5 stars Why did they bother?.......2006-08-21

The books are witty and charming. This, in stark contrast, is formulaic schlock. Americans -- and much of the world's consumers -- prefer their entertainment predigested so it doesn't require chewing, so they consume the same nutritionless movieland cliches endlessly.

In the land of limitless equality, everything is reduced to equal tastelessness. If you want impart the capacity for discernment to your child, you could start by avoiding this twaddle. The Eloise books are special, while this movie is mere product.

Update: I've since discovered that Anchor Bay has two Eloise animated DVDs, "Me, Eloise," and "Little Miss Christmas," which are far more tolerable than this Disney garbage. They are at least a bit more faithful to the spirit of the books.

5 out of 5 stars We love Eloise!.......2006-02-28

Get all the Eloise you can! The writing is so much fun. Eloise is hysterical! You can't go wrong with this book. Unless you'd rawther take a bawth!

4 out of 5 stars This movie was actually pretty good.......2007-08-09

Throughout Elementary school, I've seen various BSC books strewn about in my school Library and classroom bookshelf. As a boy, I've always viewed the books as nothing but just little girls' novels, and so I tended to avoid the books as much as possible lol. I was about 7 years old when this movie came out, and at that time, the commercials were all over the air waves non-stop. Eventually, after seeing the commercials a billion times a week, I for some reason developed a small interest in wanting to watch the film. Some of my friends who saw the movie said they loved it, so I decided to wait until they started showing it on TV, which it has been on many times but I just never got a chance to catch it. So I gave up trying to watch it for about 12 years, and I totally forgot all about the movie. Now I finally got the chance to watch the film on HBO Family yesterday, and I actually liked it! Although I was never a BSC reader, I thought the movie was good. Though I think the movie would've appealed to me more if I was a kid, so I'll always remember the Baby Sitter's Club as "the movie I should have watched when I was a kid."

3 out of 5 stars Childhood Memories.......2007-07-24

I never saw the film in theaters but I got it as soon as it came out on VHS. My little sister has it now because I guess I outgrew it. Anyway I saw it when it was playing on Dish Network. I watched it everyday when I was 9 but now that Im older it is kind of cheesy but I still enjoy it because it takes me back to those childhood memories. It has some adorable characters but I wish they would have focused more on Jessie and Mallory. I liked the books better but if you enjoyed it as a kid you would enjoy it now. Otherwise I would suggest buying it for your daughter because it is a great kid's film.

3 out of 5 stars Hey, it's just as great now as it was then..........2007-05-14

I bought this movie for a blast from my past...and I wasn't let down! Although the acting, at times, is horrible, the girls are all adorable, and it took me right back to sixth grade again. I don't really like the girl that plays Kristy, but I do love the Stacey character, along with Larissa Olyneck's (sp?) character.

Unless you loved this movie as a child, or your daughter is a fan of the book series, I wouldn't recommend this movie. But if you do have a daughter, and you're looking for a good movie that is still appropriate for her, I would definitely recommend it! The plot deals with lots of issues of teen girls, and no matter who you are, you can relate to one of the girls.

I still enjoy watching the movie after all these years, and hopefully one day I can pass on the books and this movie to my daughter!

4 out of 5 stars Far from the book series, but still a treat........2007-01-21

The Storyline

They decide to start a summer camp for the kids in their town with hopes that it will be a success. However, things get in the way when Kristy's (played by Schulyer Fisk, who is Sissy Spacek's daughter) father comes back into her life. Everyone around her, including her fellow members, become suspicious.

Schuyler Fisk is wonderful as the BSC tomboyish leader Kristy and the rest of the cast is splendid too! Rachel Leigh Cook (She's All That) is a perfect Mary-Anne as well as Larisa Oleynik's (The Secret World of Alex Mack) performance as the environment and vegetarian obsessed Dawn.

The Lows

Fans may not enjoy the storyline, since most of the book series revolves around the school life of the girls other than summer. I personally would rather see them in a school setting, trying to survive the world of babysitting and 8th grade.

Did You Know?

Actress Marla Sokoloff (Full House fans remember her as Stephanie's friend Gia) plays the bad girl Cokie.
Director Melanie Mayron makes a cameo appearance.

5 out of 5 stars ahhhhhhhh..... the 90's.......2006-11-04

okay so I grew up in the late 80's and early 90's, alright I'm still growing up, but seriously I have almost the whole collection of this Baby Sitter Club books and used to have the game somewhere. I can't tell you how excited I was when the movie came out. It was the perfect time and the perfect people to play the characters. If you loved the books or didn't even read them you'll still enjoy the movie, because it shows how to have friendships that last a lifetime!

Vin Diesel is game to soften his tough-guy image in The Pacifier, in which he plays hot-shot Navy S.E.A.L. Shane Wolfe, whose latest mission goes awry when the scientist he's sent to rescue is popped off before he can tell Wolfe where he's hidden some Top Secret software something-or-other. Before you can say Kindergarten Cop, Wolfe is assigned guard duty at the scientist's family home, where he's left with some unruly kids when the widow (Faith Ford) takes off to Switzerland to claim her hubby's safety deposit box under the guidance of Wolfe's superior officer. The trouble with this paint-by-numbers fish-out-of-water kiddie comedy is that Diesel himself is a fish out of water in the movie--he's no comic and is far funnier when he's unintentionally spoofing macho heroics in The Chronicles of Riddick. The film limply throws everything it can at you, including the idea of Wolfe directing a community theater production of The Sound of Music, but is just biding its time until the predictable action climax and hugs-all-around denouement. Vin doesn't look embarrassed, but the supporting cast sure does, especially Everybody Loves Raymond's Brad Garrett as a bombastic vice principal and Gilmore Girls' Lauren Graham as Garrett's boss and Diesel's sudden love interest.--Steve Wiecking

Description

Walt Disney Pictures presents action hero Vin Diesel (XXX, THE FAST AND THE FURIOUS) in a fast-paced comedy smash from the director of BRINGING DOWN THE HOUSE! Lt. Shane Wolfe (Diesel) is a tough-as-nails Navy S.E.A.L. who has controlled military operations in every corner of the globe. Now the ultimate test comes when he's assigned to protect the home front ... as in a house loaded with five out-of-control kids! But even when he trades combat gear for diapers and juice boxes, it's not just a babysitting job -- it's an adventure!

4 out of 5 stars Uncle Buck meets Kindergarten Cop with a touch of Major Payne.......2007-09-09

The Pacifier brings to the screen the story of a US Navy S.E.A.L charged with protecting the family of a man recently killed for having developed a program for a high tech defense against nuclear attack. The real problems begin when the widowed mother has to fly to Europe leaving her five children behind for Lt. Shane Wolfe to look after...
The movie starts off with the same old/usual cliches involving one of Hollywood's recent favorite villains/scapegoats: the Serbs (surprisingly there were no Russians, or Germans in this one...). It then moves on to (at least) a more believable foe: the North Koreans.
Vin Diesel and the rest of cast carry out their performances well, though the fight scenes could have been better.
In short, the acting, the plot, the dialogues, the music, and the action/special effects are all good.
Overall, it's probably not a movie you would want to add to your collection, but it will provide for an evening's entertainment. 3.5 Stars

5 out of 5 stars "The Way They Used to Make Disney Movies".......2007-08-22

We just discovered this movie this summer. It is very much a family movie with nothing to worry about exposing kids to. This is made very much in the way they used to make Diseny Movies, like the older versions of The Parent Trap, The Love Bug, and The Nutty Professor. There are some updates as far as technology, but the story is truly family-oriented. They mixed very interesting things into the storyline such as the pet duck, wrestling, and The Sound of Music. It is fast-paced and fun with wonderful and appealing characters. The bad-guys are just bad enough for the movie but they are also funny, just like family comedies of old. I recommend this for everyone who likes older Disney movies. We had a great time watching this over the summer.

5 out of 5 stars Great movie..........2007-08-01

that the whole family can watch! Vin Diesel as a man sent to protect a family full of children from the bad guys. Hilarious and serious at the same time.

1 out of 5 stars A lot of the same thing, just worse..........2007-07-31

I found myself asking `what was he thinking' quite a bit during this film. I remember when it was first released I was excited to see a family comedy that looked entertaining but `The Pacifier' truly proves to be anything but. It's the true definition of clichéd corny antics with no real plot other than some washed up implausible, prefabricated, ridiculous, contrived storyline that grows old before it gets started. I felt like I had seen this done before in every other ridiculously unauthentic family comedy yet each and every other time I feel it was done better. The first and largest mistake was the casting of Vin Diesel as the lead. He's not funny, not even in the whole tough guy gets schooled kinda way they tried for. He doesn't land a single joke and his physical humor is nothing more than awkward and just plain painful to watch. The second major mistake was the inclusion of Brad Garrett's character. Not the fact that Garrett played him (although I find Garrett annoying and unfunny anyways) but his character as a whole, even played by someone else, was a total waste of script paper.

The story follows Shane Wolfe, Navy S.E.A.L., as he's assigned to watch the children of a slain scientist while his widow is retrieving some valuable information from his safety deposit box in Switzerland. In her absence Shane has to deal with intruders looking for some top secret disc or something like that. Shane's biggest problem though is the children who don't want him there and fight him every step of the way. Our biggest problem is the script that the actors muddle through and we have to try and find entertainment and or enjoyment in. That is a hard job and one not worth fulfilling.

Vin Diesel was at one time a Hollywood `it' guy. He was in the big blockbusters of the season thanks to his pivotal role in `The Fast and the Furious'. After that he was admired by all men and swooned over by all women. But it's apparent that his career has taken a dive. His choice in films lately has been anything but inspired or even smart. Turning up in a film much better suited for washed up talents as apposed to rising stars goes to further twist the knife. I can't really think of anything nice to say about this movie. Granted, there are a few scenes, very few, that made me chuckle, like when Shane teaches the Girl Scout troop to fight and they get to try it out on some rival troopers, but it's not enough for me to say I'd consider watching this mess again. It was nice to see Lauren Graham, but I say that only because she's very easy on my eyes. In fact the ending alone is so outrageously ridiculous that I can't help but chastise this movie for trying to be taken seriously. It's not funny unless you find cheap imitations utterly hilarious.

5 out of 5 stars The Pacifier.......2007-07-20

The Pacifier is a really cute movie for families, especially if you like Vin Diesel.

A tragedy set against the ethnic violence of India's independence in 1947, the second film in Deepa Mehta's elemental India trilogy is even more incendiary than her controversial Fire. Muslims, Hindus, Sikhs, and Parsees alike buzz like bees around the lovely flower Shanta (Nandita Das), the Hindu nanny of sheltered 8-year-old Parsee girl Lenny-baby. This sunny Eden of racial harmony plunges into darkness when independence brings the partition of the empire and sets ethnic groups against one another in civil war. As seen through the naive eyes of little Lenny-baby, Earth is more tragic melodrama than social history, but what Mehta's adaptation of Bapsi Sidhwa's autobiographical novel Cracking India lacks in insight, it makes up for in fiery imagery, emotional passion, and a heavy-hearted longing for the paradise lost. --Sean Axmaker

Description

Earth, The second film in Deepa Mehta's controversial trilogy is an emotionally devastating love story set within the sweeping social upheaval and violence of 1947 India. As her country teeters on the brink of self rule and instability, 8-year old Lenny, an innocent girl from an affluent family, is in danger of having her world turned upside down. As the simmering violence around them reaches a boiling point, Lenny's beautiful nanny Shanta (Nandita Das) falls in love with one of Lenny's heroes,… the charismatic and peace-advocating Hassan. Love, however, can be dangerous when religious differences are tearing the country apart, and friendships and loyalty are put to the test. Building to a shattering climax, Earth is a devastating human drama in which desire unfolds into a stirring tale of love and the ultimate betrayal.

5 out of 5 stars Earth.......2007-07-12

This child's-eye view of historic unrest in newly postcolonial India, which erupted in violence after independence and the creation of Muslim Pakistan, is a timely film about ethnic and religious conflict wrapped around a story of forbidden love. Seductive and sorrowful, "Earth" boasts fine acting - including a rousing turn by Aamir Khan, as Shanta's lover-turned-embittered-bigot, Ice Candy Man - and exquisite, honey-hued photography by lensman Giles Nuttgens.

5 out of 5 stars EARTH Review.......2007-05-13

EARTH, like FIRE and WATER, is a powerful and rewarding film that explores the social and political history of India. Together, these films are a body of work that deserves a wider audience than the foreign films section of the local DVD library.

5 out of 5 stars How best friends become enemies:The breakup of India.......2007-03-13

This is the first of a trilogy of films written and directed by Deepa Mehta.EARTH is the film that sets up the following films by telling us the history of the breakup of India from British rule. For 250 years Hindus,Muslims,Sikhs and Parcees had all coexisted under British Colonial rule. Now,in 1947 Britain,as it is pulling out, divides the land into India and Pakistan. The best of friends and families are forced to choose where they will go and where their loyalties will be.Nine year old Lenny-baby.a lame girl from the neutral Parcees, witnesses this calamity as the story is told from her innocent viewpoint.EARTH sets up the conditions that existed in India at the time to prepare you for the following FIRE and WATER.EARTH is an excellent companion movie to GANDHIand A PASSAGE TO INDIA as it sets all of the historical facts into place, yet telling the story with great pathos.EARTH is the most action oriented of the Deepa Mehta trilogy.FIRE and WATER are much more introspective and reflective.THIS IS A TREMENDOUS THREESOME OF FILMS THAT ARE ALL HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.

5 out of 5 stars A Seeringly Poignant Examination of Religious Factions of India.......2006-09-19

Deepa Mehta has such a commanding presence in her films that she is able to leave her audience both educated and devastated by her stories and by the ingenious ways in which she tells them. EARTH is a magnificent example of her gifts and while it may not be as visually luxurious or as touching as her subsequent WATER, it is a fine film that not only depicts a troubled time in India's history, but also informs us of the intricacies of how people relate to each other - first as humans, second as religious sects.

The film has at its heart the year 1947 when India was given its independence from Great Britain and at the same time bifurcated into two countries - India and Pakistan. The story opens with a tranquil park picnic in Lahore where friends - Hindu, Muslim, Sikh, Parsee - while away the afternoon in camaraderie. Only slight overtones of edgy topics about religion mar the conversation until the topic focuses on the incipient split of the country into two countries. Each of the friends represents each of the religious sects and it is how these differences, at once unimportant to friendship, end up in separating the friends under the influence of the devastation of bloodshed that follows the division of the country and the displacement of millions of people, all under the guise of independence.

There is a strong love story, a committed crippled child who experiences all of the happiness and subsequent tragedy that is to follow and the story ends with some words of wisdom by the grown little girl reflecting on choices made, and other sidebars that maintain interest at every frame.

The acting is first rate from a beautiful cast and Mehta's direction makes this tale of change whir by the viewer. For those not educated in the differences of the four religious sects of Hindu, Parsee, Muslim, and Sikh the tale can become confusing: would that Mehta would have included a discussion about the film in an added feature the way she helped us understand the plight of widows in WATER. And the subtitles unfortunately do not translate the English spoken portions of the film, portions that while very important to the story are nearly indecipherable due to the accents of the characters speaking.

But these are minor quibbles in a film that pleads for repeated viewings, so beautiful is the movie and so very important is the message. Highly Recommended. Grady Harp, September 06

5 out of 5 stars The painful partition of India.......2006-09-03

"Earth" explores the event that triggered the largest mass migration in human history through a small group of friends torn apart almost against their will. Lahore is reputedly the most beautiful city in what is now Pakistan; in 1947 it was a melting pot for Muslims, Hindus, Parsees, Christians and others. The story is told through the eyes of Lenny, an upper class Parsee girl whose family desperately tries to stay neutral as the world falls apart around them. Lahore fell on the Muslim side of the line, and amidst growing violence the friends have to make choices. Hasan the Muslim decides to marry his love Shanta, a Hindu, convert, and move to India. Dil Navaz, who also loves Shanta, turns bitter and vengeful when he learns his three Muslim sisters are killed on their way back to Lahore. Others convert to save themselves; for some it is too late. But, as always, violence and extremism become a cover to take revenge for very personal reasons. "Earth" ends with a stunning betrayal that will leave you shaking. Beautifully and realistically filmed, "Earth" portrays a lost world, as the new nation of India is born. It's a painful film to watch but well worth your time.
