5 out of 5 stars Finally!.......2007-09-03

I've bought too many instructional DVDs over the years. This one finally has what I was looking for. If you have a basic knowledge of music theory Joe ( you can call him Joey) will show you how to actually use it. He's great natural teacher. He focuses entirely on the I vi ii V progression in the key of C (C, Amin, Dmin, G7). From there he starts substitutions, which were always a mystery to me. No heavy theory here, mostly: "this sounds right", lots of humor. For example he substitutes from Cmaj7 to Emin7, then to E7, then to Bflat13. With other substitutions for Amin and Dmin he ends up with that chromatic movement that sounds so funky, but I always wondered where it came from. He makes it so simple.
The on screen tabs and chord diagrams are just right. I spent 3 hours taking notes and made my own booklet. Pause, or slow motion, and write it down. All the substitutions are clearly diagramed and explained. And all the chords are simple to finger as he says he doesn't like to work too hard. So he greatly simplifies all those confusing voicings. (Throw most of them out!) Then there's a really great section on how to play your scales in a way that's interesting and useful. Then he goes over two very cool running base lines, and explains how to comp with them . (He says the base line is more important than the chords, so he keeps the chords very simple.)
The information just flows out from him like music did. He was a truly great teacher, and this DVD is 10 times more useful and enjoyable than any of the 30 others I've seen.

4 out of 5 stars I, VI, II, V.........................2007-01-25

Mr. Pass really only speculates on that progression. Which, helps simplify things a bit. Bouncing around that concept; he illustrates substitutions, logical voicings, and some pretty stellar chromatic movements. For such an amazing guitarist, I was pleasantly surprised how he kept things "real". Not focusing so much on theoretical hoopla, but focusing more on getting the music in your head and your heart out through this specific medium. A comfort to see that you don't have to bury your head knee deep in the textbooks to come up with your own sophisticated lines and comps. Included tuning feature and chord dictionary a major plus, as well. A recommendation for anyone looking to GET INTO solo jazz concepts as well as group jazz improv!

    5 out of 5 stars hard lessons.......2007-05-12

VERY GOOD FILM.IT IS A GOD FILM TO WATCH FOR ANYONE, BUT A BRILLIANT FILM TO WATCH IF YOU LIKE TRUE STORIES.

5 out of 5 stars Generations of Generals.......2006-05-15

I am one of many family members who in fact attended George Washington High School, now George Washington Preparatory High School. After reading the previous reviews of others, I can make this statement. You have to live an event to really appreciate art imitating life.
For most movie makers it can be difficult at best to recreate a story such as this about a person who took on odds, doubt & obstacles to give African American & Latino students a better shot at life, through eduaction.
Personally, I loved this movie. I first saw it during my Sophomore year in high school. I was on hiatus my fall semester attending another school, and was upset that I couldn't be back home. However, I was filled with pride knowing that my principal, & school's history was becoming a part of Americana. So to some this may have been a cheezy attempt. To me this made for TV film will go down in history that preceeded Lean On Me, Stand and Deliver an others, but all will chronical the struggles and triumphs that a few will self inflict to take on the inequalities our nation perpetuates on it's inner city youth.

1 out of 5 stars Worst than bad.......2005-12-24

Being a teacher and Denzel Washington fan, I thought I might find some enjoyment and inspiration from a film purporting to illustrate the difficulties and solutions of the inner city high school experience. I experienced neither. Only frustration penetrated my senses as I wasted a couple of hours watching this film (after wasting ten bucks buying it)!

The story line might have worked, though I doubt it, if a few obvious needs had been mandated in the production and direction, like proper casting and a believable script. Worst of these offenses was the casting, as all of the "high school" students were at least twenty-five, and most older. Talk about suspension of disbelief! The same cast would have worked were they cast as the parents of the students! At times Denzel looked younger than the student he was mentoring. Indeed, it was preposterous.

I'm sure Mr. Washington looks upon this film as nothing more than a poor experience on the way to excellence, one of those setbacks we learn from to help us find our way.

Don't waste your time or money.

    5 out of 5 stars I LOVE THIS MOVIE!.......2003-09-21

I REMEMBER THIS MOVIE A LONG TIME AGO!
DENZEL WAS JUST STARTING OUT, KIND OF!
THE STORY WAS HEART WARMING, BEFORE LEAN ON ME JOE CLARK!
    WAS MR. MCKENNA!
I REMEMBER ONE KID FATHER DIDN'T WANT HIM TO GO TO SCHOOL!
    THAT WAS AWFUL!
    THIS MOVIE IS GREAT!*****

4 out of 5 stars Denzel Strikes Again!.......1999-09-09

I seriously doubt Mr. Denzel Washington is able to give anything less than a performance of total conviction, as he proves once again to me here in one of his earliest leading roles. In a true-life portrayal of George McKenna, new principal to the trouble-torn George Washington Memorial High School, he is wholly convincing. The problems he encounters are not solely those caused by the students, but also the parents and indeed some of the teachers. His determination to turn things round stems from his passion that his pupils WILL graduate to college if they want to, and that this will never happen if they don't feel anyone cares about them. Despite resistance from some pupils and teachers,(not to mention ongoing gang warfare within the grounds), others rise to the occasion, both for themselves and for McKenna himself, such is the respect he gains. In the process of such diligence his once supportive girlfriend leaves him under the pressure of his split commitments, but as for the School, he succeeds. Seeing the graduating students really is a heartwarming moment! Having previously seen "187", it does make the violent scenes and troublesome pupils here look bland by comparison, but its hard to tell if this film was sanitised or "187" sensationalised. Regardless, its still well worth the watch, especially if you respect Denzel's work in later movies already.

    5 out of 5 stars Great DVD.......2007-03-24

When I put this DVD on I found the performances alone are already worth the money. The great bassist Ron Carter plays on the video. I could listen to Ed Thigpen and Ron Carter all day.

I could get a basic beat in no time. The camera is set up so you can see exactly what Ed Thigpen is doing, all the time. Exercises are usefull and go straight to the point. Ron Carter's bass make them even more pleasant to listen to. Definitely recommend.

5 out of 5 stars What a wunnerful wunnerful video!.......2004-12-02

I just watched the first half of this tonite. I had a basic beat going in no time. Then some accents, too. Yeah, maybe it is basic, but I tried a bit before this tape & it (timing) never really came together. Ed starts slow enough for you to follow, and you can watch it and play with the camera angles set just right. The band swings, and they are fun to play with after each lesson as well. If you want to get going on brushes, this is a must!

5 out of 5 stars Essential for learning brush technique.......2004-10-10

If you want to learn brush technique from the master this video is an amazing learning resource as well as a way to peer into the mind of the one drummer who was cited by both Buddy Rich and Gene Krupa as the best in the world on brushes.

This is more than just a DVD - it comes with a booklet that further describes the techniques shown on the video (a transcribed play-along), and has some excellent music as well with accompaniment by Ron Carter on bass and Tony Purrone on guitar.

You can take this instructional video a step further by listening to Thigpen's performances on any Oscar Peterson Trio recording from 1958 through 1965. You'll learn all you need to know about brushwork from this DVD plus listening to Thigpen's recorded work.

1 out of 5 stars Complete waste of money - rip off - don't buy .......2005-06-25

I feel like such a sucker for buying this. The DVD displays the tab (your TV is now a giant tab sheet) for each of the 50 riffs while listening to Curt(?) playing it first at normal speed and then a little slower. Wow! How revolutionary! Kind of like looking at the tab sheets and playing a CD.

Don't waste you money on this. No insight to EVH technique is revealed here. Curt Mitchell must have really needed money to go ahead with this. Don't give him any!!! The absolute worst piece of crap I've ever bought. Can you tell I'm disappointed with this?

If you still want it, I'll gladly sell you mine. Used only once!

5 out of 5 stars Best Teacher Anywhere!.......2004-10-31

I am a slow learner and the way this was taught and shown was excellent! Each guitar lead lick was played slow then up to speed. And for someone like me to be able to learn this style of guitar technique was quite a feat let me tell ya. I have used others by this master teacher and he knows his stuff.

4 out of 5 stars good for intermediate level singers.......2007-03-24

this video is meant more for intermediate level singers rather than those just starting off the block, which is excellent for those who already know how to sing but want to move on to the next level. Many practical tips are given by the coach to the 2 students (one gal one guy) and the tips are flashed across the screen.

Best if you are already a singer, especially one with some musical background. Eg. He says you must 'find your flava'..if you are new to music and singing, you might not fully appreciate this comment.

4 out of 5 stars A very nice tutorial, if a bit too short........2006-12-27

This is a very nice tutorial, which can definitely help many new singers. It has all the right techniques of singing for pop performers. Not so much for rock singers, but that's not really a drawback. If you do want to sing in the rock style, I would recommend Jamie Vendera's books. Other than that, this DVD is a nice and easy approach to pop singing, and it is fun to watch.

5 out of 5 stars A very hip, informative, intelligent way to teach vocals........2006-10-10

Ken Hicks does a great job working two mid-level (talent-wise) singers through several good exercises and problem areas that many singers face on a regular basis. The fast-paced format of the video keeps the viewer interested while the exercises and pointers are good enough to last any singer a lifetime. Marcus Miller's little interjections serve to both lighten the mood at times and to make good points.

3 out of 5 stars Ted Nugent Instructional Guitar.......2007-01-11

A lot of great information on it, but also, a lot of Ted bragging about how great he is. He is a great guitarist, but he doesn't have to tell me over and over - I already know! Would of rather have had him demonstrate his licks and riffs at slower speeds. Would have been a more effective use of time on this DVD. Worth taking a look at.

4 out of 5 stars Great American - Great American Rock and Roll.......2005-03-31

This instructional video was filmed in the 1990s, and doesn't follow the typical guitar lesson format. It isn't so much instruction as it is coaching. Ted gives a good bit of his philosophy and spirit here, but if you are looking for scales and chops you may want to move on to one of the many videos featuring a music school grad. If however you want insight into how a successful entertainer keeps his enthusiasm and energy long after many of his peers have crapped out and/or overdosed, then this is a must have.

Ted Nugent is more than qualified to talk about what works and what doesn't. To be fair, he does show how he plays many of his signature riffs. The downside to the video is Ted making way too many references to his other interests (hunting and conservation) for a typical garage rocker.

Are you a Ted Nugent fan? Do you play guitar? If yes and yes, pick up the video.
