Customer Reviews:
An absolutely STUNNING remake........2007-08-28
I really knew nothing of Dawn of the Dead 2004 until I saw the preview. No trailers, no TV spots, no hype. So I was quite surprised at how breathtaking it is, moving at a neck-breaking pace and not letting up on the gut-wrenching tension for the entire running time. The critics and majority of the audience agreed, something damn rare for a remake.
While many remakes are easy, pointless cash-ins on previous success and a quick way to mooch a few dollars off fans, DOTD 2004 is something quite different. Both Dawn of the Dead movies are great for their own reasons. And while most will judge this a remake only and do nothing but compare it with its 1978 counterpart, it's really best to watch them a two separate stories happening at the same time.
Young Nurse Ana (Sarah Polley) is living the suburban dream: perfect house, loving husband, well-manicured cul-de-sac. All that is about to change. As she drives home after a long shift dozens of clues surrounding the brewing trouble literally fall on deaf ears as Ana is too tired to notice. Overnight, her life is changed forever (as anyone's life can) when a lethal virus, that causes the dead to come back to life, spreads with alarming speed all over the world. Utterly, completely, hopelessly outnumbered, Ana flees her perfect life and hooks up with a bunch of other survivors who take refuge in a huge shopping mall.
I will not pretend that the satire of the original is something of my own discovery (as so many, many other reviewers have) and complain that it's pretty much absent in the remake because DOTD 2004 has so many other levels to it.
First of all, the zombies (the word is never mentioned in the film) can be seen as the perfect society. There is no conflict between them, no hate, no prejudice, and no grudges. They exist only to create more, as humans invariably do. The survivors barricaded in the shopping mall are rebels. They are refusing to conform and fight for their life, for their right to be different. And with this right to be different comes conflict and turmoil. The barricade between inside the mall and outside the mall is the line between the western world and the third world. Indulgent, ignorant and wasteful on one side and starving masses grabbing for whatever food they can on the other.
DOTD 2004 offers a wider range of characters (more zombie nosh!) boarded up in the mall: cop, nurse, hoodlum, survivalist old lady, pregnant woman, security guards, gay guy, arrogant playboy millionaire, pretty girl and average Joe. It could be argued that they're a far more PC assortment of characters than the original (DOTD 1978 had 2 SWAT cops and 2 reporters-the very people we rely on to protect and inform us in times of crises-chickening out of their utterly futile duties to fend for themselves) but it ends up with character arcs and a sense of sticking together to survive, despite differences, that the original didn't have.
The cast is well chosen and all act their parts brilliantly. Horror films have severely declined in recent years with most being turned into 20-something teen soap-opera trash. In DOTD 2004 you'll see a realistic group of people dealing enormous pressure with sense and reason. However, there is one particular moment in which a complete idiot character jeopardizes the security for everyone else for the dumbest and stupidest of reasons. It really bugs me that this device is in the film and it damages DOTD 2004 and prevents it from having any everlasting integrity.
There are a few references to the original (I'd hate to call them 'in-jokes' as that term would be kind of inappropriate for a film of this nature) that fans will have fun picking up on. But mostly the characters and situations featured in DOTD 2004 are completely new. The most interesting of which is the gun store owner across the street from the mall who communicates with Ving Rhames with his whiteboard and marker pen.
Writer James Gunn (Scooby Doo, Scooby Doo 2: Monsters Unleashed) unleashes an entirely new monster this time. Many people have strongly complained at the 'fast zombie' type seen in this movie and (the absolutely awful) 28 Days Later. But they are far, far, FAR more terrifying than the slow, sluggish, rigger-mortis stricken corpses in the original. They'd be on you, ripping you're throat out before you can say 'crikey!' Yes, the 'turning times' vary wildly in the movie, but it all depends on the bite and how bad it is.
I had never heard of Zack Snyder before seeing this movie, but for a debut feature he sure has impressed me. Every scene in this film is shot and lit from an identifiable point of view. This could be YOUR shopping mall in YOUR town. Not some fantasy happening far away. It's these kind of qualities that make DOTD 2004 stay with you longer than Darkness Falls or Scream 86. I'm glad that Hollywood can still make horror films as bloody and relentless as this, though there were several cuts made to the theatrical version.
This UNRATED HD DVD runs 110 minutes and features more gore, bridging scenes, more character development, more violence and the odd restored shot here and there. It really is the definitive cut of the film to have and I urge you to buy this version.
Filmed in Super-35 the HD DVD presents the film in 2.35:1 1080P widescreen with Dolby THD sound. The picture is flawless and Zack Snyder's high contrast, blown-out cinematography looks utterly perfect. A truckload of extras include Commentary by director Zack Snyder and Producer Eric Newman, The Lost Tape: Andy's Terrifying Last Days Revealed, Special Bulletin: We Interrupt This Program!-complete news coverage of the attacks, deleted scenes, Raising the Dead and Attack of the Living Dead featurettes and Splitting Headaches: Anatomy of Exploding Heads.
NOTE: This 'unrated' HD-DVD is NOT the Director's Cut. The DC lasts 110 minutes while this one barely makes it to 109. A few lines of dialogue are snipped here and there and the naked woman on the freeway has been 'covered up' with bloodstains. Why, I don't know.

16 years has passed and this film holds to the nowadays blockbusters. THX remasteriation and optimization is a must and fair choice for this great film and the blu ray format.
Less than 20 greens are nothing compared with what you get. You won't regret it.
Theatrical release on Blu Ray OR Director's Cut on HD?!.......2007-08-23
I have to say I would choose the HD release of this movie, for starters because my boyfriend has an HD player, and it also has a lot of extra scenes which were cut from the director's cut, but for once, add a lot to the film itself. At the moment, people are still sitting on the fence or choosing one or the other format. Some people prefer Blu Ray, some people prefer HD. I can't get into this, as I haven't watched any Blu Ray movies. But we'll soon see which will be the video cassette, and which will be the DVD. Soon I hope.
There are so many editions of this movie out there, it's hard to know which one to choose. Personally, for me it would be this one (well, the HD release which isn't listed on Amazon for some reason) the director's cut, as those always win hands down with me. James Cameron does the best movies. I just wish he'd change his mind and release a special edition of True Lies. A Classic!!!
This movie is said to be one of the best sequels in Scream 2 - which is in fact itself a sequel. And indeed it is a great sequel, with the only slight annoyance being Edward Furlong and his ever changing voice! (He is clearly much younger in the desert, for instance, than in other scenes. His voice began to break and had to be pitched to one level in post-production.) With Linda Hamilton looking about as unfeminine as Madonna is now, and Arnie as the good guy this time round (Arnie said during the making of this film that he would never play another evil character again, but he later played the villain Mr. Freeze in Batman & Robin), this is truly a great sequel. Although I do prefer Nick Stahl as John Connor in T3, than Edward Furlong.
There seems to be a lot of twin stuff in this movie, as Linda's sister, Leslie came in to be a double in scenes involving two "Sarah Connors" (i.e., when the T1000 was imitating her), and in a scene where Sarah removes the Terminator's CPU, and threatens to destroy it, her sister is basically in the mirror! And also identical twins Don Stanton and Dan Stanton played the hospital security guard and the T1000.
If you were a fan of Michael Biehn in the first movie, he makes a reappearance in this, in Sarah's dream sequence, and warns her that THEIR son is in danger. She has to save him, etc. They kiss and then she wakes up. This is the only scene that Michael Biehn was in, and appeared in some promotional trailers. Cameron cut the scene because he thought that audiences who had not seen the first movie would be confused by the appearance of Kyle. But it is included on the cut shown on the DVD.
Many scenes included on the DVD for you enjoyment and not in the theatrical release include:
--> A hospital scene was cut that took place directly after the pre-med students peer into Sarah's room. The doctor reminds the orderlies to make sure she gets her medication. The cut scene was of the staff coming in to give her the pills. They smack her in the gut with their batons and force the pills down her throat, then kick her while she's on the floor doubled over in pain. (This scene had to be re-shot several times because actor Ken Gibbel wouldn't hit Linda Hamilton properly with his nightstick. The scene was very physically demanding and Hamilton was furious with Gibbel because he repeatedly botched it. She got her revenge in a later scene where she beats Gibbel with a broken off broom handle - the blows are for real.)
--> After the T-1000 kills John's foster parents, he ventures outside to get the dog to shut-up. He reaches down and snatches the collar off the dog, thus killing the dog. On the collar is stamped the dog's name "Max". The T-1000 realizes he has been duped by John (actually the T-800 imitating John's voice) by calling the dog "Wolfie."
--> After killing the dog, the T-1000 goes to John's room to try to find any clues as to where John might be. He stalks around the room waving his arms and "feeling" things on the shelves, on the walls, etc. He eventually stops in front of a poster, realizes there is something behind it, rips it down and finds a box of mementos (pictures, and the like). This must be where the T-1000 figures out about the desert compound that Sarah, John, and the T-800 head to after the hospital. James Cameron decided to cut it because it made the T-1000 look too much like it had x-ray vision.
--> At the abandoned gas station, a scene involved Sarah and John talking with the T-800 about learning. He tells them that his CPU was switched to read-only before being sent out. Cyberdyne doesn't want them to learn too much while on their own. John asks can it be switched and he says yes. You then see the T-800's face in a "mirror" talking Sarah through the procedure. A puppet was used for the foreground Sarah to work on and Linda's twin sister Leslie was in the mirror mimicking Linda's hand movements. After the CPU is removed, the T-800 shuts-down and Sarah places it on a table. She picks up a hammer and tries to smash it to render him inoperative. John stops her and says they need him. He starts to show authority for the first time and says to Sarah, "How am I supposed to be a world leader if my own mother won't listen to me?"
--> A scene in a Skynet-free future, with Sarah Connor as an older woman giving a monologue about how John became a senator.
Given Arnie's $15 million salary and his total of 700 words of dialog, that translates to $21,429 per word. "Hasta la vista, baby" cost $85,716.
This is a great sequel, and well worth getting, although if you find Edward Furlong an annoying little brat like I did, then watch T3 and have your faith in movies reaffirmed.
Mediocre HD transfer, not much extra........2007-08-15
There's little reason to grab this over the standard DVD version. The transfer is fuzzy and details are not particularly sharp; granted, it's from 1992 and wasn't exactly filmed in HD to begin with, but I was expecting more out of it than this. The extras treatment is very bare bones, repeating the same commentaries from before and adding little in the way of additional materials. Fortunately it's cheap, but don't expect much.
Go for the Ultimate or Extreme edition. .......2007-06-22
I love this movie, it is one of my all time favorites. I recently upgraded to a Blu-Ray player and this is one of the first movies I bought. I am hugely disappointed in the quality and features of this BD. It honestly sux. I went from the Ultimate edition to this BD edition and took a huge step back. The quality is about the same as the Ultimate or Extreme editions and there are no bonus features. This was one of the big movies I bought a Blu-ray player for, so you can understand my disappointment. I will probably sell it and re-buy the Ultimate or Extreme edition. I recommend waiting to see if they come out with an Ultimate or Extreme edition on Blu-ray before buying this one.
im happy with this version.......2007-04-21
it may not be the extended version with cut scenes. I will say i watched this movie on digital cable and compared it to the blu0ray version and trust me there is a big difference more colors no smearing of facial features like on the cable version and the sound is incredible. If your hdtv sucks then blu-ray version may suffer if the difference is not noticable its your tv
and not the blu-ray disc. This is a must have for terminator fans!

After he pushed the envelope of computer-generated special effects in The Abyss, director James Cameron turned this hotly anticipated sequel to Terminator into a well-written, action-packed showcase for advanced special effects and for one of the most invincible villains ever imagined. Terminator 2: Judgment Day is a legitimate sequel: there's more story to tell about a hulking, leather-clad android (Arnold Schwarzenegger) who arrives from the future to protect a rebellious teenager and future leader (Edward Furlong) from being killed by the tenacious T-1000 robot (Robert Patrick), whose liquid-metal construction makes him seemingly unstoppable. The fate of the future lies in the balance, with Linda Hamilton (who would later marry her director) reprising her role as the rugged woman whose son will change the course of history. --Jeff Shannon
Description
He said he'd be back. This time experience T2 like never before! Go EXTREME with the best picture and sound ever! ARNOLD SCHWARZENEGGER returns as the Terminator in this explosive action-adventure spectacle. Now he's one of the good guys, sent back in time to protect John Connor, the boy destined to lead the freedom fighters of the future. LINDA HAMILTON reprises her role as Sarah Connor, John's mother, a quintessential survivor who has been institutionalized for her warning of the nuclear holocaust she knows is inevitable. Together, the threesome must find a way to stop the ultimate enemy - the T-1000, the most lethal Terminator ever created. Co-written, produced and directed by James Cameron ("The Terminator," "Aliens," "Titanic), this visual tour de force is also a touching story of survival.

Phenomenal Transfer.......2007-09-13
I own all DVD editions of T2, including the T2 Ultimate Edition. The transfer quality of the Extreme Edition is head and shoulders above the Ultimate Edition. I recommend purchasing this version even if you have the others.
Why did I buy it? I recently purchased an HD DVD player and it exposed the lower quality transfer of the Ultimate Edition. I immediately noticed a difference when I played this version (Extreme) on my HD DVD player. With the exception of the UK or French T2 HD DVDs, this is the best version of T2 available.
The Movie: Must Have. The DVD: Must Have.......2007-09-05
This ranks among The Godfather, Part II (Two-Disc Widescreen Edition), Spider-Man 2 (Widescreen Special Edition) and Aliens (Two-Disc Collector's Edition) as one of the few sequels to surpass the original. Coincidentally, this is created by the same man who gave us Aliens.
I'm sure all of you know the story, Arnold Schwarzenegger is sent back in time by John Connot to protect his young self from the T-1000. This movie is action packed and amazing when it comes to technology. The T-1000 looks even better than most of the movie being produced today.
But the real treat here is the DVD. Two Discs jam packed full of features. It includes numerous features, three, count them, three versions of the movie, theatrical, special, and extended editons of the movie. It also includes a very busy audio commentary, the script anf 700+ storyboards. There's so much on this disc it'd take me hours just to list all of it.
This is a Must Have. Definite Must Have. The movie is wonderful and the DVD complements it perfectly.
Best Sci Fi Movie Ever.......2007-08-23
Although it came out in the 1980's i haven't seen any film that is more sci fi than terminator 2 . the dvd it self was of the best i' ve ever seen. The special effects were outstanding and they even got an academy award for it, aside from the special effects it also had a good storyline. It is about John Connor who is going to be very important in the future against skynet, has to be saved because skynet has sent a time travellling cyborg to kill him from existing in the future.
Classic, with some nice extras on the DVD.......2007-08-01
If you are seeking the turning point in Computer Generated Films, Terminator 2 marks the first true success of it, with the morphing Terminator cop, originally influenced by films like Willow and The Abyss, both with marked CGI effects.
The film is a must for Terminator fans, with much action and gunfire, with Arnold's trademark style. Some great explosions, though the film has slow times for story telling.
The extras are interesting, but the HD version is only good on a PC with a specific setup with Windows, being released before true HD players. Commentary and extras are good in general though. Recommend fans buy this version.
They really don't make 'em like this anymore.......2007-07-24
It is interesting to watch this fifteen years later and see how it holds up. This was the movie that ushered in the era of digital sound, it also showed morphing, environment mapping and these things that were already present in much shorter form in The Abyss (Special Edition) during the water creature sequence.
From the plot standpoint, this is the only Terminator movie that could have worked without Arnie. And maybe this is not a coincidence, it probably was conceived that way. If Arnold would have demanded too big a paycheck, this probably would have become "Sara and John get chased by the T-1000". And it probably would have been almost as good. That being said, it is great to have Arnie back, because when the first part had him act like a (pretty scary) machine, here he is in a way more human than in most of his other roles where he plays actual humans.
One could almost be a bit nostalgic for the time when Hollywood could still produce carefully thought-out blockbusters that rocked and even had a bit of wit. Watching "Die Hard 4" a few weeks ago was a good reminder how deeply the American film industry has fallen since then.
As far as the extra features on the DVD are concerned, I am grateful that James Cameron did not include that horrible sugar-coated coda in the theater version. It would have single-handedly wiped out the whole movie, it is so cringe-inducing. (Yes, even more cringe-inducing than Arnold's acting and the occasional bad SFX.)
In "Terminator 2", Cameron gives us great action scenes, punctuated by slower, more dialogue-heavy scenes. The film is long because it takes its time to draw its characters, and it does not rush to its conclusion but lets us savor it.
A few things look a bit ridiculous of course, like the obvious puppet of Arnie when he walks towards the cops at Cyberdyne while being shot at and that determinedly downtempo synthesizer music in some of the action scenes sometimes is a little embarrassing. Most cell phones can probably synthesize better sound today. But that does not detract from the accomplishment of the movie, which is built on character, situation, and a solid understanding of pacing.

Cute but silly, this 1983 cautionary fantasy stars Matthew Broderick as a teenage computer genius who hacks into the Pentagon's defense system and sets World War III into motion. All the fun is in the film's set-up, as Broderick befriends Ally Sheedy and starts the international crisis by pretending while online to be the Soviet Union. After that, it's not hard to predict what's going to happen: government agents swoop in, but the story ends up in the "hands" of machines talking to one another. Thus we're stuck with flashing lights, etc. John Badham (Saturday Night Fever) directs in strict potboiler mode. Kids still like this movie, though. The DVD release has a widescreen presentation, theatrical trailer, Dolby sound, director commentary, optional English, French and Spanish subtitles. --Tom Keogh

Classic to share with a new generation.......2007-08-08
I've had a great time sharing this title with my kids. It's a bit of a nostalgic look back at the era of my own youth. If you don't spend much time on the sappy "no one wins global thermonuclear war" message, it's quite fun to watch.
good movie.......2007-08-07
When I watched this movie for the first time, I was only a teenager and I loved it. Now that I got to watch it again, I loved it again, but I had to add some nostalgia and good memories to it this time!
The movie is cool, BUT THE SPANISH SUBTITLES WHAT ABOUT IT???.......2007-07-10
I was expecting the new releases of this movie can be now with spanish subtitles, but I'm comfirming now many spanish-talking people can't enjoy the movie because the MGM guys failed in the final edition and they never put the spanish subtitles.
The movie is great, nice 80's value, cool older remembranza but all of us who were expecting to find the spanish subtitles option active now are deceptioned.
Bad move for the latin-american talkers MGM.
Instant Teen Classic.......2007-06-28
In the era when nuclear threat was real and era of the Personal Computer birth, this film with an excellent story played by the wisecracking young Mathew Broderick and the really young Ally Sheedy (What happen to her she was really good and pretty) introduce us to the world of computers and hacking in the era of Cold War Tech with two countries fighting for supremacy and they stuck in the middle.
This film makes me go to college and study Computer Science, John Badham excellent direction and the Art Background is superb.
This Classic has to be in your collection if you where young in that time and if you haven't see it, would be educational to see what computers look like in the early eighties and what they could do.
It Takes Two Hands To Handle A WOPR.......2007-06-10
All storytelling revolves around three themes: Man against Man, Man against Nature, and Man against Himself. In the latter half of the Twentieth Century, a fourth paradigm was added, that being Man Against Machine. Largely told in the cinematic mode, Man against Machine has given us any number of low-budget American International Pictures releases, as well as such classic films as FAIL SAFE, DR. STRANGELOVE, COLOSSUS: THE FORBIN PROJECT, 2001: A SPACE ODYSSEY, the TERMINATOR films, THE MATRIX and its sequels, and WAR GAMES.
WAR GAMES is a late Cold War Era entry (1983), and probably the only Teen Angst movie of this kind. Despite the inherent weaknesses of the Teen Angst genre, WAR GAMES manages to have been (and remain) satisfyingly entertaining, even after a quarter century. WAR GAMES remains timeless.
David Lightman (played by a pimple-faced, squeaky Matthew Broderick) is an underacheiving teenage computer genius who spends his time entertaining himself by hacking into the school computer and changing people's Grade Point Averages. Somehow, David manages to hook up with the pretty and popular Jennifer (played by a presumptively virginal Ally Sheedy). While trying to impress Jennifer with his pocket-protector machismo, David hacks into what he believes to be an online War Gaming site. Presented with a whole plethora of possible games, David, of course, skips over such boring choices as tic-tac-toe, poker, chess, and even the intriguingly named Falken's Maze to play Global Thermonuclear War.
David HAS hacked into an online War Gaming site. Unfortunately for David, and for us, it's NORAD. Having just completed a study showing that human button-pushers won't push their buttons in the event of an attack, NORAD has given the ultimate responsibility for button-pushing to a new computer, WOPR (the acronym is a little vague). WOPR doesn't realize that David is a hacker. WOPR also doesn't know that it's all a simulation. So WOPR starts World War III. David and Jennifer, realizing that it is all a terrible misunderstanding, spend the rest of the film trying to turn off the rambunctious little toaster oven. The ending is a Cold War parable.
After two and a half decades part of the fun of watching WAR GAMES is looking at all the quaint high-tech antiques. The computer geeks are an army of screaming, whining, barely toilet-trained four-eyed migraine makers. David's modem is a hard dock model that basically swallows telephone receivers. Reel-to-reel tape drives still look impressive. 5.25 disk drives are on the cutting edge. PCs as such don't exist, but 8088 integrated monitor-dual floppy drive-keyboard models are everywhere. No one's heard of the Graphical User Interface yet, and everything is reduced to green typing on black screens, the equivalent of computer cuneiform. DOS doesn't and Windows wasn't. Amazingly, David's home dinosaur can turn the typed word into an audio feed, allowing WOPR to talk. Tres cool, man!
As for the WOPR itself, it is appropriately named, being about a third of the size of a typical Burger King restaurant. Very well endowed with more beeping and flashing things than a Vegas Casino, WOPR has about as much computing power as an abacus, and works just about as well, but it is pretty to look at.
Even though the WOPR couldn't play a DVD, your computer can, and WAR GAMES is a fun popcorn-and-soda flick that's worth having in your collection.

Sky Captain rules!.......2007-02-18
If you missed this movie - now is the time to try it in HD! Shame that the movie failed at the box office, but it's good to own it now in Blu Ray. Nice transfer, though the movie itself is very soft visioned, so you won't get this very special sharpness feeling (like i.e. with Mi:3)
poor acting but effects are good.......2007-02-16
THe story is not bad but the acting is quite poor. On the other hand the high definition picture makes up for them and this movie can be enjoyable
I loved this movie..........2006-12-10
I may be in the minority but I really enjoyed this movie. From the retro 'CG heavy' visuals to the 1930's movie seriel feel, this movie is a breath of fresh air. The characters are transparent as cartoon characters but it all fits together nicely to create a unique movie experience.
Would Have Been Great As A Saturday Morning Serial.......2006-11-21
SKY CAPTAIN AND THE WORLD OF TOMORROW comes off as too campy and too two-dimensional. Polly Perkins (Gyneth Paltrow) and Joseph "Sky Captain" Sullivan just don't ever come to life as characters. We never get to see why they do what they do, or why they're romantically drawn to each other -- except for the handsome rogue and the independent woman that they are.
The plot is almost a standard culled from any of the 1930s science fiction magazines, and even takes a few riffs from Max Fleischer's Superman cartoon with the giant robots wreaking havoc in the streets. After the Great War (World War I), several scientists were pulled into a think tank called Unit 11. No one knows what they were working on, but now all of these men are starting to disappear again. Giant flying robots seek out the scientists as well as machinery and raw products, but no one knows what for.
Sky Captain gets called in. His mercenary band quickly assembles and gets ready to probe into the mystery, but they're attacked first and Sky's right hand man and innovative thinker, Dex, is capture. But not before leaving a clue that tells Sky Captain where the source of the mysterious robots is broadcasting his commands.
The movie quickly becomes a chase as Sky Captain and Polly track down one clue after the other to figure out what's going on. This is familiar fare for anyone who's seen the Indiana Jones movies or the Buck Rogers serials released on DVD.
The CG work for the movie is absolutely amazing, though the opening 30 minutes or so are really too dark in my opinion. They seem drenched in warm sepia tones that I found distracting. The actions sequences came along regularly enough, but most of them were far too predictable. The most inexcusable part, though, is the lack of interesting heroes. They were paper thin and tended to meander through scenes without substance.
Still, as a Blu-ray release, it's an interesting one worth picking up. The high-def presentation is fantastic, and the audio is well sorted out to get the most from your surround sound system. There aren't any other enticements to pick up the movie if you already own it on DVD other than the presentation.
Only two shots left.......2006-09-28
This is a 2004 view of what a 1930's view of the future could look like. Most of the CGI and blue-screen overlays had to be a tad fuzzy to make the scenes work. The language may be a tad stilted but it also is designed to be a thirties movie rendition.
Seems that somewhere towards the end of the last war a brilliant scientist with a vision disappeared and the whole Group 11 project was disbanded. Today top scientists are going missing and it is up to Polly Perkins (Gwyneth Paltrow) reporter-photographer to find the reason. Mean while it looks as though a destructive minus is ravaging the city (looking for something) and the only person capable of foiling the evil plot is, you guessed it, Joe "Sky Captain" Sullivan (Jude Law, of "GATTACA" fame).
Eventually Joe runs out of gas and only Franky (Angelina Jolie) can save him if there is time. Meanwhile Polly finds that her camera has only two shots left; can she make the best of them?
How can this daring duo and their pals foil the nefarious plot that may prove fatal to the world as we know it?

Are you ready to get down with the sickness? Movie logic dictates that you shouldn't remake a classic, but Zack Snyder's Dawn of the Dead defies that logic and comes up a winner. You could argue that George A. Romero's 1978 original was sacred ground for horror buffs, but it was a low-budget classic, and Snyder's action-packed upgrade benefits from the same manic pacing that energized Romero's continuing zombie saga. Romero's indictment of mega-mall commercialism is lost (it's arguably outmoded anyway), so Snyder and screenwriter James Gunn compensate with the same setting--in this case, a Milwaukee shopping mall under siege by cannibalistic zombies in the wake of a devastating viral outbreak--a well-chosen cast (led by Sarah Polley, Ving Rhames, Jake Weber, and Mekhi Phifer), some outrageously morbid humor, and a no-frills plot that keeps tension high and blood splattering by the bucketful. Horror buffs will catch plenty of tributes to Romero's film (including cameos by three of its cast members, including gore-makeup wizard Tom Savini), and shocking images are abundant enough to qualify this Dawn as an excellent zombie-flick double-feature with 28 Days Later, its de facto British counterpart. --Jeff Shannon

THE WORLD IS TAKEN OVER BY ZOMBIES!!!.......2007-09-04
imagine that, i bet that'll give a scare. i love zombies, just about any horror flick with zombies will make my day. when this first came out, i had high expectations for it, and boy it sure didn't let me down. the first was great for being what it was, mad props. george romero is a wicked man, in a good sense. he does magic with all of his zombie movies. old and new. it's hard to do it like he does, no doubt. but this one, no doubt was up there as well. my kind of thing, the living dead, the blood, the chase, the victims, chaos everywhere! i applaude it as well. and the fact that the zombies were faster was a good idea. i mean it's creepier when they're slow, but when they're fast it's just excitement cause you don't know if they're going to get you or not. the remake was a good one i got to give it to them. the actors did a really good job, ving rhames is the man. great actor, much respect for him. the makeup was great too, overall it was very satisfying.
really great!!!.......2007-08-13
This is a really good movie. I give it 4 stars! I love horror films with zombies and what not.
Great pre-credits sequence. Great credits. Too bad about the rest of the movie........2007-08-04
It looks like they stopped bothering to storyboard after the first fifteen minutes, so after a boffo opening we get the kind of sloppily executed action sequences (spaced out with slack "character" oriented filler) that could only have come from a director of music videos. (Method: Shoot a lot of stuff and force some kind of sense on it in the editing - we're seeing a LOT of that nowadays, and there is a difference between effectively conveyed chaos, and the merely chaotic.) The characters aren't particularly engaging, and the zombie baby was ripped off from 'The Living Dead at Manchester Morgue' (a.k.a. 'Let Sleeping Corpses Lie') which is actually a somewhat more enjoyable rip-off of Romero's zombies than this rip-off, I think. Romero's vision, while considerably less slick, was more personal and more grandly apocalyptic - although not gnat-sized attention-span ready, which is okay because I don't actually care for movies that are like watching someone else play a video game. Anyway, after the terrific opening, the rest of the movie is a major let-down, and there's nothing much to look forward to until the end credits, which like the opening credits, are excellent.
I don't have any real interest in Snyder after seeing this. '300' looks awfully silly, artificial and cartoonish - but it may benefit from having a graphic novel source - which is just the sort of thing that can make a director (too lazy to plan his action scenes) look a lot better than he actually is. (See 'Sin City.') I am still undecided as to whether or not I want to bother, though, because I am getting sick of big budget movies that are too cheap to spring for actual exteriors.
DotD remake: mediocre. not a complete waste of time, but pretty close. Actually, it's a great metaphor for itself - the walking dead version of Romero's film. It moves around more quickly, but that is neither here nor there. The original material had a soul and this is just one of the legion of shambling brain dead, creatively necrotic stinkers that have been plaguing our multiplexes - things that were once movies. I'd sentence the director to repeated viewings of the films of Sam Peckinpah so he could learn how to stage effective action scenes (not to mention character building) - but I shudder to think that he might be inspired to give us his own version of 'The Wild Bunch,' so scratch that. Just shoot him in the head.
(The first 10-15 minutes or so ARE good, though.)
Could be better........2007-07-26
Let me start off this review by saying that I haven't seen the original Dawn of the Dead so if you're looking for a comparison between the original and the remake, this review isn't for you. I've seen a couple "of the Dead" movies (including the comedic version, Shaun of the Dead") and I am entertained by the movies in general. However, this particular movie has way too many flaws to simply forget.
So what's this movie about? Basically, as in most movies in the zombie genre, a woman named Sarah wakes up to find that the world has been overtaken by zombies. The rest of the movie has her, as well as a few others, finding a way to survive.
Let's go over the positives first. First, fans of zombie movies will be thrilled with the typical, yet entertaining storyline. Although some may find the plot to be unoriginal, I think the plot is one that never gets old. Furthermore, there's quite a few surprises and twists that improve the storyline. Generally, I found this movie to move along rather nicely with only a few dull moments here and there. Also, there were a couple of jokes here and there that I found amusing.
And now for the negatives. Acting-wise, this film is borderline awful. The only actor I recognize is Mekhi Phifer and even he isn't all that great in this movie. Maybe it's not the actors themselves rather than the writing that makes this film not that great. I'm assuming that the writers didn't want to take this film seriously considering the large amount of unreasonable reactions from the characters. For example, without giving too much away, I'll ask you if you were put in these characters' shoes, would you find it important to have sex knowing that zombies are directly outside the building you're having sex in (clearly this scene was thrown in to attract more people to watch the film, I found it rather pathetic), would you attempt to start a relationship with another person rather than come up with a way to survive, would you throw yourself in a crowd of zombies in order to save a dog that you just met? Rather than feeling fear and sympathy for these characters, I felt like screaming "Just kill them already!" at the TV. Or maybe this movie is NOT meant to be taken seriously. Either way, I found these flaws to be too overbearing to brush off.
Bottom line, if you're looking for a good zombie movie that'll instill a bit of fear in you, stay away from this one. It's filled with too many holes to be considered good by any means.
great gore, gruesomeness, and fun.......2007-07-23
Well, it's fun if you like end-of-the-world movies as I do. A terrific cast and taut direction help to make this by turns frightening, depressing, humorous and outrageous. The opening sequence, with the morning of first attacks and then the opening credits with the song "When the man comes around" by Johnny Cash, is one of the best things ever filmed. In fact, the soundtrack is one of the strengths of the film.
And just to let you know: zombies are much scarier when they run after you, as opposed to shuffling!

George Romero's 1978 follow-up to his classic Night of the Living Dead is quite terrifying and gory (those zombies do like the taste of living flesh). But in its own way, it is just as comically satiric as the first film in its take on contemporary values. This time, we follow the fortunes of four people who lock themselves inside a shopping mall to get away from the marauding dead and who then immerse themselves in unabashed consumerism, taking what they want from an array of clothing and jewelry shops, making gourmet meals, etc. It is Romero's take on Louis XVI in the modern world: keep the starving masses at bay and crank up the insulated indulgence. Still, this is a horror film when all is said and done, and even some of Romero's best visual jokes (a Hare Krishna turned blue-skinned zombie) can make you sweat. --Tom Keogh

Not Free SF Reader.......2007-09-03
Something has breached the barrier between the dead and the living, and the dead are coming back to walk the earth, not to mention eat the living.
Slowly people begin to realise that is something wrong, but react too slowly, and the dead take over. Some small number of survivors try and hold out.
Dawn of the Dead.......2007-09-02
I liked this movie alot. It was entertaining. The best scene is in the parking garage.

Well Worth The Extra Few Dollars.......2007-07-30
Originally, I thought I might simply buy a regular copy of this film. However, I decided to purchase the ultimate edition instead and was not disappointed. Upon receiving and opening it you quickly realize you possess much more than just the different movie editions (which are great also). In addition, you have extras, trailers, and other features that make this the complete package deal.
My friends were big fans of the 2004 remake of Dawn of the Dead. When I told them they needed to see Romero's 1978 original version they were worried the time gap might affect the movie quality. Quite the contrary, we watched it on a digital projector and they enjoyed every minute of it.
If you are a true fan of the Dead Series then this is the edition you both want and need.
best zombie movie ever.......2007-07-21
This is without a doubt the best zombie movie ever made. My major complaint has always been that they edited out some scenes from most of the DVD releases. But that problem is solved with the Ultimate Edition. It contains the directors cut, argentos version, and the extended version. Now this movie can finally be seen the way it was meant to be seen. I was really impressed with the actors in this movie. They really did a good job, and got into their characters. Day of the Dead is pretty good too (never really did like Night much) but I don't think Day deserves to be called a masterpiece. Dawn of the Dead certainly deserves to be called one of the best horror movies ever made.
dated and pretentious. But it's a decent film.......2007-07-10
I am a huge fan. I like zombie movies of all types. I like Dead Alive. I like 28 days later. I like this version of Dawn of the Dead. But I really didn't find it steller. FOr one, the film is very dated, making it hard for us to take the zombies seriously. But that's alright. I understand it is 30 years old. What I don't tolerate is Romeros social satire. It might be because everybody talks about it, but it seems about as subtle as a zombie in a strip club. We get already. Zombies want to come to the mall. Zombies are mindless. Humans are like zombies. That means... wait for it... We are a mindless consumerist culture. Wow. Thanks for the insight. In spite of this the film is interesting and well made. It just seems like Geore sacrificed the brooding, oppresive tone for a more comical one. I understand that bad stuff goes on and there is some great, shocking gore, but, overall, it just seems like people give the move a bit too much credit. I personaly prefer the remake.

More remake than sequel, Men in Black II safely repeats everything that made Men in Black the blockbuster hit of 1997. That's fine if you loved the original's fresh humor, weird aliens, and loopy ingenuity, but as sequels go, it's pure déjà vu. Makeup wizard Rick Baker is the only MIB alumnus who's trying anything new, while director Barry Sonnenfeld and costars Will Smith and Tommy Lee Jones (as alien-fighting agents Jay and Kay, respectively) are on autopilot with an uninspired screenplay. The quest of a multitentacled alien--on Earth in the form of Lara Flynn Boyle--for the light of Zartha requires Jay to deneuralize Kay, whose restored memory contains the key to saving the planet. The tissue-thin premise allows all varieties of special effects--mostly familiar, with some oddly hilarious new stuff tossed in for good measure. Certainly enjoyable as a popcorn distraction, but the MIB magic has worn a bit thin. --Jeff Shannon
Customer Reviews:
Saving the Earth From the Scum of the Universe, Again..........2007-08-12
After successfully saving the planet from a deadly alien threat and raking in big money at the box office, the boys at 'MIB' were livin' the good life and enjoying all the perks of being beloved by moviegoers. Which is probably why Columbia Pictures felt the need to bring more intergalactic action and hilarity to the masses with a sequel to the highly popular film with the hopes of starting a franchise. So, 5 years after their first big screen adventure, Agent's K and J (Tommy Lee Jones and Will Smith) are back again to save mankind from the worst scum of the universe, in Barry Sonnenfeld's "Men in Black 2".
"Men in Black 2" finds Agent J (Will Smith) having a difficult time keeping partners while protecting the Earth from alien threats. After he de-neuralized his former partner/mentor Agent K (Tommy Lee Jones), J feels he's better as loner agent than partnered up. However, when a deadly new threat comes to Earth in the guise of a lingerie model (Lara Flynn Boyle), J and 'MIB' must bring in the one agent who will stand a chance of stopping this threat and saving humanity once again, Agent K. The only problem is, he doesn't remember anything about his life in 'MIB'.
What happens when a movie is so successful that it makes tons of money, turns its young lead actor into a mega-star, and catches audiences completely by surprise with how good and unique of a movie it was? Well, the obvious answer would be to make a sequel and cash in on the original film's success, which is exactly what Columbia Pictures did. However, there is a slight problem with this plan, how do you top what's already been done? The surprise factor is gone, the freshness has worn off, and it's possible that due to the mediocre animated series that was spawned from the original movie has diminished people's interest in the series.
To solve their possible problems Columbia Pictures brought on two writers that can handle the type of material needed for this type of movie, meaning plenty of action, humor, and sci-fi fun. Next, the powers-that-be managed to convince the main cast to reprise their roles from the first film, and lastly bring back the director that made them successful in the first place. So, did Columbia's plan of action work for this film or was it to fall prey to being yet another inferior sequel in an already long list? The answer, mostly yes, but there were some issues with the movie.
The cast was excellent, which isn't surprising given the talent assembled here, but as much as I enjoy Will Smith in most movies he makes, at times he actually felt boring to me here. I understand that the goal was having his character in the place of Tommy Lee Jones' at the beginning of the movie, being the serious career agent, no longer the care free rookie, but he came off like he was bored, leaving his performance feeling stiff. Now, I will say that once Tommy Lee Jones' character was back in play, Will Smith lightened up and the movie quickly picked up and felt more like the original, but the early part of his performance does put a bit of a damper on things. Tommy Lee Jones returns to playing the role that he does best, and apparently it's the only role he knows how to do, the no-nonsense serious man with a mission and a really dry, subtle sense of humor. Though the schtick is the same as before, it's still fun to see these two characters interact on screen, easily erasing the crappiness of the children's animated series. The supporting cast was solid throughout, I did grow tired of Johnny Knoxville's character, but he did provide some humorous moments. The rest of the cast was fun, and giving more screen time to Frank the Pug and the 'Worm' guys was a nice touch.
The story was a good follow-up to the original, with plenty of humor, though not as much as I'd hoped for before Agent K returns, but still the jokes were funny. The action was energetic like before, though a little more over-the-top in places than even the previous film had done, and the sci-fi elements were inventive. However, with all that being said, the story did suffer some from the fact that it had lost its freshness and originality since the first one was so much of a surprise and audiences didn't know what to expect, but this time we had a pretty good idea. Honestly it didn't matter what anyone did in this movie, no matter what was tried they just couldn't match the original, which is unfortunate since the characters are so fun and story potential is everywhere, but in the end you still can't do better than what's come before. This is actually one of those rare cases when the potential for a sequel is there, but the studio should avoid going through with it for the simple fact that you most likely won't be able to do better than what you already have done.
"Men in Black 2" is still a fun movie, though not as good as the original, but that doesn't mean the movie's not worth seeing or owning. Yes, there are some problems with this movie in some areas, but most are overcome early on, leaving audiences with a rather enjoyable movie experience.
"Men in Black 2" is rated PG-13 for violence, language, and sensuality.
Another weird story.......2007-07-02
Kay is gone, J is looking a partner like Kay. A snake lady shows up, other things happen too.
Tommy Lee Jones, Will Smith, Lara Flyne Boyle.
The men should have stayed gone.......2007-06-25
I remember having such high hopes for this movie, but it turned out that the movie trailer had served up all the laughs and the rest of the flick was shockingly dull and un-orginal. But I get it. Sequels are hard and Hollywood are usually a greedy lot. The plot re: returning the Light couldn't have been more campy or paper thin if you tried. But, and it's a big but, it may have worked a little better for children. I'm not sure. I don't have children. Anyhoot, if you have absolutely nothing to do or you're searching for what NOT to do with a sequel, check this film out. Otherwise, watch the first movie and then pretend that this one never happened. Where's a good nuturalizer when you need one?
A Good Sequel.......2007-02-19
A very good comedy, Men in Black II picks up four years after the first movie left off, and continues to shed light on Earth's finest agents. This time the arrival of an unexpected guest from outer space will rock their world...
Tommy Lee Jones, Will Smith, Lara Flynn Boyle and Rosario Dawson (both of whom are HOT!), and the rest of the cast carry out their performances very well.
The setting, the plot, the music, the humor, and the dialogues are all wonderful!
Overall, it is a movie worth watching, and even though quite silly at times, it will surely put you in a good mood! 4.5 Stars
Where this sequel is strong, it is v-e-r-y strong. Where it is weak, it is v-e-r-y weak........2007-02-17
Mr. Jones and Mr. Smith are back and, IMHO, and their chemistry is as good if not better than in the original (this time IMHO Jones deserved top billing). Rip Torn is given some lines that I'm sure made him wonder if the $$$ he received from being in the second movie was worth the public embarrassment. Tony Shalhoub, on the other hand, is hilarious during the deneuralizer scenes (even though the writers saddled him with stolen lines).
On the other hand, with the exception of Johnny Knoxville as Scrad/Charlie, the villians are downright awful, and, as much as I like Patrick Warburton's other work, his short appearance here was pretty bad.
The Superbit technology doesn't get as many opportunities to shine as in MIB, although it is quite noticeable during the first subway scene and at the end. I'm still impressed enough with Superbit to choose it over other formats, even if I sacrifice the DVD "bonus features" to have it.

Thanks to a greedy Pokémon collector, Earth's weather patterns are askew and its population doomed unless Pokémon trainer Ash can return three glass balls to their proper place in this second Pokémon feature. Unlike the television show, the movie features little violence and no Pokémon battles in the classic sense. Instead, the focus is an environmental one: what happens when humans interfere with the harmony of Earth's elements--in this case fire, ice, and lightning. Even Team Rocket have a (temporary, to be sure) change of heart, joining Ash and Misty in their effort to free the three imprisoned birdlike Pokémon who regulate those elements. The good intentions of this 76-minute film, however, don't make it any less dull for grownups (even though this feature is better than the first). Even more mind-numbing than the feature is the lead-in short, "Pikachu's Rescue Adventure," in which Pikachu and Pokémon friends follow Team Rocket's feline down a hole into a Munchkinland-type place. Without the humans for dialogue, viewers must endure a full 20 minutes of nothing but the squawks and squeaks of pocket monsters. As the movie's title song says, "We all live in a Pokémon world." Great movie to add to your Pokemon collection.......2007-06-21
I enjoyed this one just as I enjoyed the first movie. As some have said before...it is more lighthearted than the first one which is nice. It starts with the three legenderies; moltres, zaptos, and articuno being captured and its up to ash to "save the world" lugia makes an appearance and a powerful one at that. the movie didnt fail to entertain and i reccomend it highly to any fan. its going on the shelf with the rest of my pokemon collection.
A child's favorite........2007-02-18
A true fan of Pokemon would enjoy this movie. It is now my two son's
favorite of all the Pokemon movies in their collection of movies.
Enter the chosen one.......2007-02-17
This was the second pokemom movie to be released. This year celeberate the 7 anniversary of this movie and abouth the 9 or tenth anniversity of the TV. Series. A word of warming even though this movie got a g rating I do not recommend this movie to any one under the age of 13 due to heavy fantasy violence and thematic elements. For those of you that did not watch pokemon season 2 when it first aired or when it was on cartoon newtwork back in 2003 or 2002 in re runs you might not be aware that the line up has changed. This movie takes place during the orange island series. It has been a few months since the incident with mewtwo that end in a heroic battle. After ash nobly scarificed his own life to stop the fightig. Just to inform you ash was revived at the end of the first movie by pokemon tears and has never been killed again since the first movie. We also have a new character in this movie taking brock's place. The movie begins with Ash Misty and a new characters Tracey a pokemon artist who is substituing for Brock after he decide to stay behind and assit proffesor ivy near the end of the first season. While the three of them are traveling to the Orange Islands the boat is blown off course in a storm and lands on Saumdo island. There Ash is choosen to be part of a festival. The future of the world is at stake and evil colector has captured the legendary pokemon Zapados and Moltres and is going after Articuno too lure out the beast from the sea the fourth new legendary bird Lugia. This causes the balance of nature to become unstable. It's up to ash and Lugia to restore the peace among the three legendary birds. Will he succed or is the eartgh doomed tio be utterly destroyed. Also to inform you this also was the first time team rocket switched sides and went from being villians to heroes. If you like this I also recommend the other movies and the Yugio movie
