Movie Trailer better than ACTUAL movie........2007-08-19
this was by far one of the worst movies i have seen. I remember watching the movie trailer thinking that this movie was going to be...good, at most. I went with some friends to watch it... bad mistake. Not only was the movie boring, but many of the scenes from the trailer were deleted. Movie trailer advertised a movie that never really... existed. Dont purchase, save your money.

There are three unforgettable characters in John Sayles's contemporary adventure-drama set in Alaska. They are never seen but live only in a frontier diary found by teenager Noelle De Angelo (Vanessa Martinez). The life of the diary's narrator is much like everything in this movie: hanging in limbo. The first half of the film focuses on why men and woman turn to Alaska, a land still ripe with opportunity. A small town is at a crossroads, with its pulp mill and canning factory closed and new investors seeing different directions in which to take the area (one even boasts the state is the ultimate theme park). A local (Sayles regular David Strathairn) is just escaping his past, taking up commercial fishing again. He attracts a traveling nightclub singer (Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio in her best role in years) who struggles daily with her daughter Noelle. Like any good theme park, Limbo presents the threesome with an unexpected adventure. In the wilderness, the three relative strangers learn more about themselves than was ever possible in town. Sayles's usual craftsmanship creates a singular blend of drama and suspense with an ending designed to ruffle feathers. Not as accessible as his breakthrough hit Lone Star, Limbo is nevertheless a hearty film from one of America's best storytellers. --Doug Thomas

I love this movie........2007-07-03
Rarely have adults been portrayed more sensitively than in this film. There are so many scenes where my heart burst with joy at how real everything felt. I've just ordered this to watch with my husband and I can't wait to see it again.

John Sayles is an under-appreciated film-making genius. His movies are authentic in that they tell stories of multi-dimensional people usually caught between a rock and a hard place. "Limbo" is one of my favorites because its setting is a place I love-Alaska. Sayles does the state, its culture and lifestyles true justice in this tale of disenfranchised people who end up together in the wrong/right place at the wrong/right time. The ambiguity of the ending allows, encourages the viewer to decide the wrong or right issues. David Strathairn vividly captures the drifting life of a man whose once promising career is side swiped by tragedy decades before but who now sees a glimmer of hope in the shape of Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio's bar singer and her teenaged daughter heartbreakingly played by Vanessa Martinez. Alaska is often called "The Extreme" because of its terrain and weather. People moving to Alaska go to either hide from themselves or find themselves and Sayles story richly demonstrates the powerful catalyst the state can be, but the emphasis is never off the characters who resonate with bitterness and carefully hidden optimism. The ending of the film upset some viewers but watching the emotions play out on the faces of those waiting to confront their uncertain future is am homage to the art Sayles brings to film. Viewers should allow themselves to be challenged and entertained by this gem.
John Sayles Best - Highly Underrated and Underappreciated.......2006-09-09
I just got finished watching this movie for about the 4th time since it first came out in 2000, and every time I watch it I enjoy it more. As all these other reviews will testify, this is an underappreciated JEM ! The cast is incredible, cinematography is wonderful. In addition, there are two AMAZING things about this film. One- I've never seen a film start off for the first half with a script that is almost soap-opera-ish and you find yourself actually thinking that the acting talent is too good for the material, when all of a sudden in the second half (this film really is in two acts) the dialogue just dives deep like a submarine. Second, is the young actress that plays the daughter, Vanessa Martinez. She is INCREDIBLE. She should have recieved an Oscar nod for her performance, it's THAT good!! If you haven't seen this movie yet, and love a nice character-driven story, then buy a used copy asap and ENJOY!
Thought provoking.......2006-02-21
Limbo is a film that both entertains and challenges you. Excellent performances and a hint of mystery build to a surprise conclusion that stimulates discussions about the twists of the plot line.

Synchronicities abound!.......2007-02-19
I had a near-death experience (NDE) 30 some years ago. I went on to become a researcher and interviewed more near-death experiencers than I can count. I have four published books on the NDE and natural spirituality -- I wish I had thought up this story myself.
This plot is excellent.
For anyone who has or believes in sychronicities and serendipity -- this movie goes right to the heart. The child actor is wonderful. He doesn't over act but walks around in this heartfelt plot like any child his age would. Albert Finney always gives a good performance and is particularly good here as a scoundrel. There are a panel of angels that add so much comedy in their very straight way. And, Bridget Fonda plays a believable role as the mother to be who is so traumatized by her father's abandonment when she was a child. It all comes together in the end not just cleverly -- but spiritually.
____________________________________________________________________________________________________
They are calling it a family movie but it's rated PG. There's some drinking and gambling in Atlantic City and one scene in a hotel room where Leslie Ann Warren is taking a bubble bath and Albert Finney is waiting in the bed. It's very cute and they don't really show anything but I'd ask my kids before I'd watch it with my grand kids.
The movie came out in 2001 around the time of 9-11. In fact, United airlines was showing it the day of 9-11. So it was put on a shelf for a while (never shown in the theater -- it's an independant film) and just came out not to long ago on DVD. I saw it on Showtime. This is a real feel good movie that makes one want to applaud and cheer at the end.
So put it on your list for a time when you want to be entertained and just feel good!
Truly warm and wonderful film.......2007-02-05
I taped this show on my DVR to watch while my husband was watching the Super Bowl. I started watching it early and I couldn't stop. This show was really touching, very entertaining and not over done. I would recommend this film to anyone that wants a "feel good" movie. We have family movie night every Saturday and I am going to have us watch this next weekend. LOVED IT!!
A spiritually uplifting film that should have had a wider release.......2005-12-14
I never even heard of this film until this month when my Spiritual Cinema Circle subscription featured this film in its November 2005 mail-out. For those who don't know, Spiritual Cinema Circle is a mail distribution service where members get a dvd each month that includes 3 short films and one feature film of spiritually inspiring content. They bring little known films into your home and I haven't been disappointed yet.
Anyhow, in the film "Singles", Campbell Scott's character and Bridget Fonda's character agree that while their relationship as a couple didn't work, that they were probably a "scorching couple in another universe." Well, once again they team up as a couple for this film. I'm a big fan of Bridget Fonda and try to see all of her works. She's made a lot of movies, but most of the roles haven't been high-profile as they were in the early 90s. In this film, she really shines as a pregnant wife who still carries the pain of having a father walk out on her at a young age.
The spiritual aspect of this film revolves around Milo, a card-playing boy who doesn't want to leave heaven for a lifetime on earth. His refusal to go when his time comes up has catacalysmic effect on the earth, so the board members who determine birth cycles enlist the help of a cantankerous old man serving time in hell for a lifetime of carnal desires. He has one day to convince Milo to be born. What ensues is a romp through Manhattan, hitting all the sights/activities that children tend to enjoy. Albert Finney as the old man is hilarious and reminds me of Jackie Gleason. He's thinking more about himself than the boy, so when he crosses paths with an old flame, played by Leslie Ann Warren (everything I've seen her in, she plays a floozie who can't stop giggling), they take a trip to Atlantic City for some adult fun of gambling.
By the time the film reaches resolution, we see the connection and purpose for everything, and it reaches a surprising yet satisfying conclusion. One thing I particularly enjoyed in this film were the members of the board...essentially kids acting grown-up, one of them an African American speaking with a very snobby-type of accent, which is done for humorous effect. I love how they keep the old man on the mission everytime he gets distracted by the ladies.
So, give this film a chance. I have no idea why it didn't get a wide release. It was supposedly released in 2001, and seeing New York with the World Trade Center, I don't know if that was an issue post 9/11, but if that's the case, it was a wrong decision. We could've used an inspiring comedy with spiritual elements to help us through our shock, grief, and trauma of that horrible day and the dark weeks after. This film will inspire you and maybe even give you something to think about regarding the children who choose to be born to you.
One of the best family films ever made... really!!!.......2005-10-02
What a surprise to discover a great film that is otherwise unknown to the masses! After reading a glowing review in the Boston Globe, I had to order this DVD and see for myself. Yes, it's all true: DELIVERING MILO is a superb feature film that balances humor, philosophy and drama in a modern day twist on "It's A Wonderful Life." Without giving away the plot, I can say that no one is likely to be able to resist the affable Albert Finney and the enchanting young Anton Yelchin as MILO. Check it out!!!
Great movie!.......2005-07-22
I can't believe this movie didn't get wider release in theaters. A truly thoughtful and entertaining film for children and adults alike. It's an inspiring story of redemption and the love of life. Albert Finney is outstanding, and Anton Yelchin is the most believable child actor I have seen in years. I highly recommend it!

Description
General MacArthur doesn't know it, but he's headed for an ambush. Hugh O'Brian, Mickey Rooney and James Mitchum star in this "well-made" (Los Angeles Times) World War II nail-biter that'll keep you on the edge of your seat with "consistent excitement" (The Film Daily) right until the explosive ending. A marine patrol secretly lands on the Japanese-occupied island of Siarago. Their mission: to locate a Japanese-American girl with vital information concerning General MacArthur's pending Philippine invasion. What they uncover instead is a Japanese plot to detonate underwater mines as the US fleet enters the bay. Cut off from outside communication, these brave marines must find a way to prevent what could be the worst naval tragedy from ever happening.
Customer Reviews:
Basically a good movie that portrays the wrong unit.......2007-07-17
A squad of Marines is inserted onto a Philippine island in 1944 by seaplane and rubber raft for a scouting mission prior to MacArthur's invasion. They link up with a Philippine Guerrilla to locate a Japanese American agent with vital information.
The movie has a good cast and lots of good action scenes, I just can't give it five stars due to one large technical inaccuracy; the Marine Corps did not operate in the Philippines in 1944, they were in the Central Pacific at the time. And they certainly didn't perform special reconnaissance for MacArthur.
The Sixth Army Special Reconnaissance Unit - also known as the Alamo Scouts - did perform many missions similar to the one portrayed in this movie, both on New Guinea and in the Philippines.
The Alamo Scouts worked in small teams, were often inserted by seaplane and rubber raft, wore the leopard pattern camouflage and soft caps worn by the Marines in this movie, and would sometimes liaison with Philippine Guerrillas.
Having the Marines on a scouting mission in the Philippines is sort of like having the Army invade Tarawa. Still, all in all, this is a fun movie to watch. Strictly speaking, it isn't factual, but it speaks to some of the facts. I could have given it five stars if the unit had been portrayed as Alamo Scouts.
People knowledgeable in WWII weapons will probably notice the scoped M1 sniper rifle carried by one of the Marines isn't a true M1C or M1D configuration as it should have been.
Entertaining, if somewhat cliched, WWII adventure.......2007-03-23
Ambush Bay is an entertaining WWII action movie that uses too many war movie cliches, but overall doesn't take away the enjoyment of an exciting movie. In October 1944, a specialist team of Marines lands in the Phillipines to complete a mission, meeting a source that has some key information, that could play a big part in the retaking of the islands. Among the nine-man team is a inexperienced radio man, Grenier, who was a last minute replacement and is not quite sure why he had to come along. While trekking through the jungle, Grenier must try and fit in without having the team turn on him. But as the team of Marines travels across the island, they find themselves battling the Japanese every step of the way, and their numbers begin to dwindle. The story isn't groundbreaking, and it doesn't need to be, the movie moves at a lightning quick pace and there is action around every corner. At times, the characters are nothing more than stereotypes, but you don't even notice, the action moves too quickly. Non-stop fun throughout with plenty of action and excitement.
With a script that focuses on three main characters, Hugh O'Brian plays the lead, Sgt. Steve Corey, a tough-as-nails veteran who finds himself in command after the mission leader is killed early on. O'Brian brings a hard-edged touch to the role as the no-nonsense leader. Mickey Rooney seems to be having a great time as Gunnery Sgt. Ernie Wartell, O'Brian right hand man who seems to be the only one trying to help Private Grenier, the inexperienced radioman. Grenier is played by James Mitchum, and though he might not have the acting chops his father Robert did, James is pretty good in the part. Grenier narrates the film so as a viewer I found myself feeling for him and this very dangerous, confusing situation he finds himself in. The rest of the nine-man team is given little to do in the way of lines, but they don't stick around long. Tisa Chang plays Miyazaki, the spy in the Phillipines who has some key information that could save the invasion by MacArthur that finds herself attractive to O'Brian's Sgt. Corey. The DVD has a nice-looking widescreen presentation, the movie was filmed on location in the Phillipines and really benefits from it, and a theatrical trailer. Overall, an exciting, action-packed WWII movie in the Pacific with good performances from its three main leads. Give Ambush Bay a try!
Ambush Bay -- not art.......2007-03-13
Ambush Bay is not art. It is not entertainment. It is not even interesting. Ambush Bay is without a doubt one of the worst WWII movies ever produced. The best part of this movie is Robert Mitchum's red cap, worn while he is in the Philippine jungle hiding from Japanese soldiers. Red cap.... Why not wear universal orange?
I've seen the movie twice. Once with the sound on. It was awful. I watched it again, with the sound off. It was better this second time. It had the feel, without sound, of an ok comedy. With the sound it was pathetic.
Don't both buying it. Spend your money on something more useful or entertaining.
Understated.......2007-03-08
I enjoyed this movie very much. True it's not a classic war film but it stands out among the run-of-the-mill TV type of fare. The ending was curiously muted but it made the film raise itself a few notches. The weaponry was accurate (although I doubt the silencers used on both pistol and carbine were WW2 issue) and the uniforms tally with the photographs I have seen of USMC reconnaisance units. Definitely Hugh O'Brian's best work.
Decent WWII Action Fiction.......2007-02-12
"Ambush Bay" is a decent feature with an interesting plot, but viewers need to temper their expectations. It's a fictional World War II action drama about a Marine Corps reconnaissance team dispatched to the Japanese-occupied Island of Siargao in support of a pending U.S. amphibious invasion. Their mission is to link up with a Japanese-American woman and radio back intelligence information she has on a coastal bay to be used for the assault. The reconnaissance turns into a raid after they find an elaborate minefield in the bay that threatens disaster for the invasion force, and are unable to warn higher headquarters when their radio is destroyed in action.
The plot is interesting and the movie has a good cast with Hugh O'Brian as First Sergeant Corey, Mickey Rooney as Gunnery Sergeant Wartell and James Mitchum as Private Grenier. Mitchum's character is an airman radio operator assigned to the Marine team, being the odd man among a team of highly trained recon Marines, and serves as the audience's observer and narrator for the story. While there are other Marines on the team, O'Brian's character takes the lead early after their commander is killed and Rooney gives balance as a career soldier who doesn't take himself too seriously.
While the movie has a good story, it's a modest production. Action receives priority over tactical logic as the recon team stumbles across Japanese units, resulting in several firefights that whittle the team down to the main characters. O'Brian overdoes his macho persona and Mitchum's character is a bit contrived as an airman ill-suited for such a high-risk mission. While the movie boasts on-location filming in the Philippines, the casting of Filipino actors as Japanese soldiers and the use of a contemporary military base for the climatic sequence waters down the authentic environment. As well, the actors move like they're on a nature hike rather than a trained Marine team behind enemy lines. The music soundtrack is okay, but sounds akin to "Bridge on the River Kwai" (1957) with a melodramatic tone.
It's a good "B" movie for light-hearted action entertainment. The DVD's imagery and sound are good.

A cou PLA STICKS.......2006-09-22
Got this movie yesterday and watched the whole dang thing with all its bonus material. What can I say - this movie gat a cou pla STICKS. The cinematography is amazing at times and the concept of the movie is thoroughly fasinating. I am glad to see the originality and creativity in Limbo, something which is currently lacking in the movie industry today and feel the Limbo team have done an AMAZING job, especially when you find out how much the movie cost to make...shhhhhhhhh...I'll keep quiet...but the bonus material on this dvd will reveal all.
The bonus material for me was what I really liked about the DVD, it contains, deleted scenes (with narratives as to why scenes were taken out), along with interviews and behind the scenes footage.
In short, this movie is a must buy, especially for aspiring film makers - it will highlight what is possible with a dream and motivation. I look forward to seeing future work from this there Thomas Ikimi - he clearly has an interesting career ahead of him and I wish him all the best.

Engaging, Intelligent Filmmaking!.......2006-08-21
Independent Filmmaking at it's finest. Limbo is a film that will challenge and enthrall it's viewer's with it's unique story and noir-ish visual style.
I am an aspiring filmmaker, and feel fortunate to have seen this film because it is an excellent example of how storytelling and vision can overcome budget limitations.
I expect writer/director Thomas Ikimi has a bright future ahead of him.
Fantastic Film.......2006-06-27
Can I just start by saying that this film is a must-buy. I saw this film at a festival and after the first watch, I was very confused. But then after days, I began to see all the multi-layered meanings and the deepness of the film.
The directing is great, there are times where I felt lost in limbo and there are some memorable shots. The performances are all great but the one that stands out is when Adam meets Lasloe...won't spoil it for you but it's a great scene.
This film will be a classic, no doubt. Just can't wait for part 2!!!!!!

In the glory days of spy flicks and TV shows, I Spy was one of the most entertaining programs of the genre, thanks to the pairing of Robert Culp and Bill Cosby. As spies for the U.S. government, the duo bopped around the world, hiding in plain sight as carefree athletes following the "tennis circuit." Part of the appeal (OK, the gimmick) of the show was that the carefree and dashing agents were always facing death, and beautiful women, in exotic locations. In the four episodes on this DVD, the globetrotting spies find themselves in Mexico, where they do battle with agents for "the other side" and get into various romantic entanglements. Though the show was noteworthy at the time for casting an African American in a lead role, the plots are generally pure escapism. One episode employs a Heart of Darkness motif, with a Russian defector living among villagers as an embodiment of Quetzalcoatl, though the American spies stay at a luxurious hotel where they socialize poolside with a women's synchronized swimming team. A young Sally Kellerman turns up in another episode as a spy who has just had a baby. The implausibility just adds to the fun, and I Spy stands up as a great example of tongue-in-cheek '60s cool. --Robert J. McNamara

Customer Reviews:
Soultaker, comedy horror.......2007-06-12
I've seen this movie on VHS years ago, I was very average, not much action or Horror at all, the story to the movie was interesting when you read it, but the actual movie is poor, and why is it that the DVD's of this Movie are so EXPENSIVE, your paying an Equivlent for 17 DVD's worth for this movie that I think doesn't rate very well. If I've mist something and there is a reason for the expensive price, Let me know.
Cheers
Kudos to the first and still the best 'death angel' movie!.......2006-04-04
Check out SOULTAKER to see the original "Death Angel" film that inspired the "Final Destination" series, plus "City of Angels", "Dead Like Me" and a dozen other wanna-be's. Leave it to some creative indies in Mobile, Alabama, to invent a new genre' of thriller that Hollywood has tried over-and-over again to copy. Be sure to watch the actual feature of "SOULTAKER" (at 97-minutes) instead of the abomination chop version of MST-3000 at 60-minutes that removed all of the plot and suspense in favor of comic possibilities of out-of-context moments. If you haven't seen the full feature of "SOULTAKER," you haven't seen the film, period.
Where does that guy even keep his acorns?.......2005-11-08
Way longer than necessary, semi-plotless, terribly acted, bizarre and ultimately pointless. The comical appearance of the mother who looks like a huge mannish turtle and the Soultaker who looks like a catcher's mitt with eyes are the two highlights of the 'regular' version.
The MST3K version however is perhaps the zenith of all comedy. It is the first episode in the 10th season, and it offers up one of the juiciest morsels in cinema history: "nice yard. plenty of room to rock."
The MST3K plot parts can get a bit tedious, just like all the hospital running and bus themes in the later half of Soultaker, so I recommend fast forward the mystery science plot, enjoy some of those curly fries under the seat, and remember that Zep is never wrong.
Soultaker.......2005-09-08
I saw this movie on the Science Fiction Network and loved it! I even recorded the encore presentation the next day! I liked the eeriness and action of the four displaced souls racing to get to their bodies before the angel of death laid claims on them. I'd recommend this movie to anyone who like science fiction in general.
Funny, but not deliberately so........2005-04-11
This hokum about souls trying to get back to their bodies while evading the angel of death, who is also an angel of mediocre acting, is good only in the way that old films like Deadly Mantis, Billy The Kid Vs. Dracula or Catwomen Of The Moon are good. It is sheer camp in every way right through the script, the story, the acting and the direction. Wait till you see the wooden acting of Joe Estevez and the huge-headed Robert Zdar. Calling their performances funny is an understatement; you have to see this to believe it, although I'm not sure it's worth the current price (as of this writing) of more than $20. There are many GREAT fantasy and SF movies you can buy now for less than $10, so why this junk is still so expensive is a bit of a mystery.
If you are looking for grade-B campy fun or are willing to suspend your disbelief for the most superstitious and ridiculous plot premises, then you'll enjoy this, otherwise, steer clear. If you enjoy films that are so bad they are funny, if possible you may wish to do yourself a favor and see the Mystery Science Theater 3000 episode where they make fun of this movie. It's hilarious!
