The eclectic, pell-mell energy of hip-hop maestros Outkast gives a jolt to Idlewild, their first movie as a team (both have acted independent of each other: Andre Benjamin, a.k.a. Andre 3000, has previously appeared in Four Brothers and Be Cool, and Antwan "Big Boi" Patton was in ATL). Young bootlegger Rooster (Patton) and undertaker's son Percival (Benjamin) are best friends from childhood, but adult life has become woefully complex: Rooster's wife despises his life at the nightclub Church, Percival is stuck taking care of his depressed father, and an ambitious gangster (Terrence Howard, Hustle & Flow, Crash) kills Rooster's mentor (Ving Rhames, Rosewood) to take over the gangster's bootlegging operation. The arrival of a high-handed cabaret singer (Paula Patton, Hitch) may help Rooster save Church, but when she and Percival fall in love, troubles multiply. Idlewild's musical numbers are packed with dynamic spectacle--not surprising, given that director Bryan Barber previously directed music videos for Outkast. Unfortunately, Barber's script is lackluster, taking some particularly cliche turns toward the end. Still, there are plenty of pop-out performances--singer Macy Gray turns up the heat in the opening number--that put Idlewild a step above such pop-star-driven flicks as Under the Cherry Moon and Glitter. --Bret Fetzer

Predictability? Cliches? I'll Take It! One Spirited, Entertaining Movie!.......2007-08-21
Enjoyed the fun! Enjoyed the music! Enjoyed the dancing! Enjoyed the sass! Enjoyed the "talking flask!" I'm not particularly a fan of musicals, but this one made me sit up and take notice. I had fun with the movie. Some parts weren't particularly pleasant, but the movie kept me cranked. I loved ALL the music and the dancing was something definitely to be seen! So much attitude! Andre Benjamin, Paula Patton, Antwan Patton, and Terrence Howard wrapped it! And, Macy Gray was just...just outrageous! Loved it!!
Enjoyable and powerful!.......2007-07-14
Outkast is my favorite rap group of all-time. They're not your ordinary rappers. They write and rap songs with intelligent lyrics. And if any rappers could pull off a performance in a period piece movie, it would be these 2 guys. Dre does a great job playing the caring and polite mortician Percival and Big Boi does an equally great job playing the bootlegger, club performer, and unfaithful husband Rooster. There were excellent performances in this movie by the other cast members also. The one performance that really stood out to me was Paula Patton as Angel Davenport. She brought alot of emotion to the character and the romance between her and Percival was a very compelling aspect to the film. Jackie Long was funny as Monk, Terrence Howard was ruthlessly good as Trumpy, and Ving Rhames despite his brief appearance in the film was impressive as always playing Spats. The stage performances in the movie were vibrant and energetic. A great movie all around. Outkast keeps adding to their legacy!
i'm angry at all of you that don't see the genius here..........2007-07-08
has anyone that reviewed this seen many classic films? do any of you live in the south? are you educated on the time period in which this film takes place? you probably like Moulin Rouge better.
this film actually held the time period in place while adding and implimenting modern elements without losing any of the frame of reference, UNLIKE SO MANY OTHER 'FUSION' FILMS. i'm not even considering this film in the same bracket as that other crap. and this wasn't attempt to bring Broadway to the Silver Screen; this was a high concept story. that's it.
Idlewild is a "must see" and "must share" film. i'm disgusted by the lack of attention and credit that Idlewild has recieved.
AND BY THE WAY! THERE'S SOME DAMN FINE ACTORS IN THIS FILM THAT DO A BANG-UP JOB... (this is directed to the reviewer that says quite visciously to contrary). i can only hint as to what the singular reason may be that you have not taken notice of these fine players.
An Overlooked Gem!!!!.......2007-07-02
I saw Idlewild last night for the first time and all the advance buzz on this project, still does not do it justice. This is a top-notch production with dazzling performances, excellent production standards and very imaginative cinematography.
The production numbers are quite simply unstoppable and the blending of the music of the period with the sensibilities of today works beautifully. Obvious care was taken to recreate the look and feel of the period and some of the shots and film sequences, most notably a love scene and a death scene were simply mesmerizing.
I indeed admit that the script itself could have been more compelling but there is no denying the power of Andre Benjamin in this production. His performance is measured, believable, poised, and poignant. He has a more than promising future in films.
This is an excellent and a most worthy representation of another dimension/time in African-American culture and a MUST for your collection if you want quality productions of African-American life.
I highly recommend!
IDLEWILD FILM REVIEW.......2007-05-27
There is know doubt that this film is brilliant to say the least ... watched this film twice and the second time round just re-confirmed my thoughts. Definetly recommended as one for the collection and is sure to be timeless and watchable for years to come. Excellent movie... Just watch it!!! Hope these guys just keep making movies with with same amount of energy and soul!!!

Writer-director Alan Parker's feature debut Bugsy Malone is a pastiche of American movies, a musical gangster comedy set in 1929, featuring prohibition, showgirls, and gang warfare, with references to everything from Some Like It Hot to The Godfather. Uniquely, though, all the parts are played by children, including an excellent if underused Jodie Foster as platinum-blonde singer Tallulah, Scott Baio in the title role and a nine-year-old Dexter Fletcher wielding a baseball bat. Cream-firing "spluge guns" sidestep any real violence and the movie climaxes cheerfully with the biggest custard pie fight this side of Casino Royale (1967).
Unfortunately for a musical, Paul Williams's score--part honky-tonk jazz homage, part 1970s Elton John-style pop--lets the side down with a lack of memorable tunes. Nevertheless, Parker's direction is spot on and the look of the film is superb, a fantasy movie-movie existing in the same parallel reality as The Cotton Club and Chicago. A rare British love letter to classic American cinema, Bugsy Malone remains a true original; in Parker's words "the work of a madman" and one of the strangest yet most stylish children's films ever made. --Gary S. Dalkin

Bugsy Malone.......2007-09-05
My grown sons enjoyed this movie when they were young, so I purchased this as a nostalgic treat. It brought back some memories and some good laughs. It,s a new group of people doing "Little Rascals" types of activities. It was enjoyable.
Stop the Insanity!.......2007-09-05
OK, first let me say that I actually own this disk. Many of these reviews are for the movie--which I'm sure we all remember fondly from the Family Film Festival with Tom Hatten--but do not speak to the actual product being sold. (Amazon really should discourage this practice.) And I can understand why some people who have not purchased it are concerned, because the box looks all foreign and scary. I got my disk in a timely manner, and even though it is marked zone 3, it ran just fine in my bottom-of-the-line Samsung American-market DVD player. So I'm thinking it will work for you, too.
The disk itself is fairly bare-bones, without a lot of bells and whistles. There are no subtitles unless you want them (even on the credits) and the sound and picture are quite clean. If you have bought the motion picture soundtrack you will find that some of the vocals are slightly different, and I think the CD is perhaps a bit better. All in all this is a quality product that just looks weird. It's certainly worth the money, and while I can't absolutely guarantee that it will work for you, it sure did for me.
Creepy and Annoying.......2007-09-01
Wow, the husband chose this one and said it was a great family movie. I think that maybe it's time I had him committed.
Seeing these little children mimic gang hits and sing torch songs was just plain creepy. And the music will make you want to hang yourself from the nearest tree.
Still on here to order??.......2007-08-23
I ordered this in Dec 05 for Christmas present. Amazon says there was a problem with manufacture delivery. I inquirer again later and they say just to leave it and that I haven't been actually charged yet. Now I check back and either lot of these reviews are faked by Amazon or I don't know (maybe in countries other than the US). Cause my order still says: Delivery estimate: January 13, 2006
I think it is really bad of Amazon to even leave this item on here when apparently don't actually have an item to sell for going on almost 2 years.
Awesome Classic.......2007-05-07
This movie is a classic. It took me forever to find out the name to this movie. I remembered watching it as a kid and wanted to see it again. Definitely a classic that kids would enjoy today!

Oustanding for teaching Gatsby.......2007-01-28
As an English teacher trying to illustrate the historical context of Gatsby, this documentary is excellent. Fred Allen's tongue-in-cheek narration may be difficult for some students, but the issues relevant to the book are obvious and treated appropriately. It is also a fast and quick screening in classes--the first few chapters are all that are needed, up to when the documentary shifts to the expatriates abroad in Paris.
NBC's Project Twenty series.......2005-12-02
What a masterpiece! I remember watching this program when I was a pre-teen in the mid-fifties. The film footage, Fred Allen's narration, and Robert Russell Bennett's musical accompaniment are nothing short of captivating. A must see for students of that era.
Buyer Beware.......2002-04-25
I was duped into thinking this was a music performance video. It's nothing but a documentary about the '20s. As a documentary, it's great, but definately not for a music buff (musician), like me, who collects music videos.
Great if you teach US History.......2000-11-25
Best overall look at the 1920's for students and the people interested in the 20's. Music is right with the times and the film is vintage. Fred Allen is the the host and his old radio voice is right out of the Jazz Age!!

"We Are Immortal Til Our Work Is Done".......2006-04-29
David Strathairn (Good Night and Good Luck, Blue Car) plays Bruce who has a job as a magician. His wife Sophie, played by Stacy Edwards (Houdini, In The Company Of Men) has a deaf father, Mr. Prappas, played by Arthur Hiller (Roswell, Beverly Hills Cop 3) who Strathairn is taking care of because Edwards doesnt want to. Strathairn gets into a car accident involving Frank, played by the brilliant Nicky Katt (Boston Public, Boiler Room) and they become friends. Strathairn even finds out that Katt's daughter is deaf just like his step-father and he also meets Katt's wife Sara played by the lovely Lake Bell (Surface, I Love Your Work). Meanwhile, Edwards is spending time with Dr. Addams, played by Christopher McDonald (The Perfect Storm, Terminal Velocity) who used to go to High School with her. Filled with great performances especially by Strathairn, Edwards and Katt. Too bad this didnt get theater release, I would of liked to see Strathairn get nominated for Best Actor, Edwards for Best Actress and Katt for Best Supporting Actor....their all fantastic. McDonald does a superb job as well. Speakeasy is a wonderful little film that I recommened highly. Also starring Michael Bacall (Urband Legends: The Final Cut, Undertow), Julianne Nicholson (Seeing Other People, Ally McBeel) and Gage Stevens (The Vest).
Speaking From the Heart........2005-04-05
This is pretty good indie film on love, relationship, forgivness, reconcilation, and self-discovery. It's good drama with enough funny and heartfelt moments and strong performances from the 4 leads.
The film starts with a car crash between Bruce Hickman(David Strathairn) and Frank Marnikov(Nicky Katt) on a quite street in Los Angeles. The two strangers seemed to be destined to become friends and soon meeting regularly. Bruce is full-time magician and Frank is a prawn shop owner. They have nothing in common, but they are fascinated by each other's background that seemed perculiarly sort of a six degrees of separation since Bruce's father-in-law and Frank's daughter are both deaf.
Meanwhile, Bruce's wife Sophie(Stacy Edward), a teacher ran into Dr. Addams(Christopher McDonald), an old friend from her college days, and they started going out for chats or therapy sessions at a cafe. She's not in good terms with her Dad, and tried to avoid seeing him. He's gradually becoming interested in her romantically, even though she has no idea and have no desire for him since she's faithful to her husband.
Through these meetings and conversations, the four leads experience some kind of miracle as they learn to shed off their inner shadows and reevaluate the importance of their lives.....

Description
Eat This NY is a documentary about 2 best friends struggling to open a bistro in Brooklyn. Suffering through financial crisis and a crumbling friendship, the two friends learn what it really takes to open and run a restaurant.
As a foil to these novices, the filmmakers turn their camera on legends of the NY food world, going behind the scenes at Le Cirque, Balthazar, Gramercy Tavern, Jean Georges, and other four star eateries. Candid conversations with Daniel Boulud, Danny Meyer, Keith McNally and many more food legends illuminate the trials and joys of what it's like to succeed in the restaurant world.
Tim Zagat (Zagat Survey) and Ruth Reichl (Gourmet Magazine) lend sobering analysis to the proceedings.
