The Singing what???.......2007-09-07
This laugh out loud parody of the 40's and 50's cowboy serial movies is wonderful. Tom Berenger plays the 'less than confident' heterosexual good guy Rex O'Herlihan, the singing cowboy, (the singing what?). Andy Griffith and Fernando Rey portray the 'a-typical' no-good Colonels, and G.W. Bailey, (Rizo in the TV series M.A.S.H.),is the narrator and comedic foil to Rex's innocent character. From the black and white square screen and scratchy sound intro, which becomes super surround sound and lush color scenery, to the 'perfect' sunset that Rex rides into, the entire movie is a non-stop, over the top, fun trip. Written and Directed by Hugh Wilson, who is responsible for the hilarious "Police Academy", this is a 'must see' movie. Not recommended for grumpy people!
Rustlers' Rhapsody.......2007-08-12
This is a timeless classic. A real sleeper that somehow got over looked. If you love westerns, and you love to laugh, you'll love this movie. Pay close attention. I have watched this movie more times than I can count, and still get a new laugh every time. Don't miss Patrick Wayne's guest appearance as a rival "good guy". He's dressed just like his old man in Rooster Cogburn. What a great movie. Highly recommended.
Great movie!.......2007-05-19
This is the epitome of a "B" western movie, but it's hilarious! Andy Griffith, Tom Berrenger, Marilou Henner and Selma Ward--all of them did a great job on this!
rustler's rhapsody.......2007-03-12
I watched this movie 45 times on VHS, and finally wore it out. I ordered the DVD version and can continue to enjoy this classic. Amason delivered this DVD in just a couple of days. The quality of service and products are the best I have had the opportunity to order! This is my source for movies! Good job Amazon!..Thanks!
Wanna LAUGH?.......2007-02-24
This is one of the funniest movies ever made. Great performances by a big name cast and a brilliantly funny screenplay and storyline.
5 +++ stars! You will watch it over and over and force all your friends to watch it too. Then, they will buy it also.

Description
10 years into their career Rhapsody Of Fire finally deliver their long overdue and eagerly awaited DVD, entitled Visions From The Enchanted Lands. This superb double DVD not only shows the brilliant live skills of the band, but also allows the viewer a lush behind-the-scenes introspective thanks to the abundant bonus material. DVD 1 captures various tracks recorded live in Canada during the band's most recent tour. In between songs, there are interviews with the band members giving the viewer impressions of the great vibe during this tour.
The second DVD is packed with bonus material. The viewer gets a lot more behind-the-scenes impressions and documents about the collaboration with Christopher Lee, the orchestra, as well as with label mates Manowar and the management. Even a visit to Haus Wahnfried, Manowar's studio, where a rehearsal was cut for exclusive inclusion for the DVD. Moreover there are video clips of The Magic Of The Wizards Dream, Unholy Warcry, the Making Of and some different versions.
Customer Reviews:
A full concert would have been nice........2007-09-06
It should be noted that I am a huge Rhapsody (of Fire) fan and that no DVD release this year excited me more than this one.
The format of the DVD is such that both discs are essentially "behind the scenes" documentaries. The difference being that the first disc has a handful of live songs thrown in (eight I believe) where as the second one is entirely extra footage and documentary segments.
For a first commercial DVD release, it is rather disappointing to not have a complete set list that substantiates a full 90 minute concert. I can't imagine who made the decision to put the priority on self indulgent interviews and footage from shooting music videos, but they should be fired (or seriously rethink their position). I know I am not the only Rhapsody fan clambering for a complete live concert DVD experience (see Blind Guardian, Kamelot, and Nightwish for examples). Maybe one day we'll all get our wish.
Otherwise, the songs that are included are played well and all technical aspects of the DVD seem adequate.
Good, but was hoping for more live footage.......2007-08-29
Overall this DVD was very enjoyable. Since it's the only Rhapsody DVD available I can't complain too much but what really irks me is that I was hoping it would contain a complete concert. As a fan in the USA who has not had the chance to see Rhapsody live I was looking forward to the complete concert experience. The behind the scenes footage is interesting but I would've preferred it to have been treated as bonus footage accompanying a concert performance.
It's obvious this DVD was influenced a lot by label mate, Joey DeMaio of Manowar fame. The format is very similar to the Manowar DVD's. That's not necessarily a bad thing if there were other DVD's to choose from but alas I believe I'll have to keep waiting to see the real thing. I may have to schedule a European vacation soon if I can't satisfy my live Rhapsody cravings here in the States.

The blood in question in "Till the Blood Runs Clear" belongs to the warrior D'Argo, and it starts to flow when he's captured by a pair of feral Bloodtrackers, mercenaries who look as lovely as their name would suggest. The obsessed Peacekeeper Captain Crais has put a bounty on the heads of D'Argo, Zhaan, and Rygel, which Crichton and Aeryn discover when they set down on a desert planet for repairs but neglect to tell their shipmates.
"Rhapsody in Blue" takes Moya and her crew to a remote Delvian outpost, where the head priestess has lured Zhaan to help her keep her madness in check, or so she says. There's something more sinister going on in this power grab, and it has something to do with Zhaan's dark, criminal past. The crew is paralyzed in self-pity and Crichton is on the verge of an emotional breakdown, but Zhaan's torment as her past comes flooding back gives this episode its punch. --Sean Axmaker
Description
"Til the Blood Runs Clear ": While out studying solar flares in his module, Crichton unexpectedly creates a wormhole. Aeryn manages to pull the module away before they're sucked in. They are forced to land at the Dambada Depot where they discover a Wanted Beacon offering a reward for the return of Zhaan, D'Argo, and Rygel. When confronted by two vicious Bloodtrackers determined to get the reward, Crichton and Aeryn must also impersonate bounty hunters. The situation gets even more complicated when D'Argo comes down to the planet and is captured by the Bloodtrackers
"Rhapsody in Blue": The crew wakes to find Moya has StarBurst on her own accord to answer the distress call of another Leviathan. But the call was merely a psychic ruse by a stranded Delvian sect who needs Zhaan's powers to heal their leader, Tahleen, from madness. Crichton and the rest of the crew are helpless as they become victims of the sect's mystical powers, as Tahleen attempts to steal Zhaan's soul!
Customer Reviews:
More good episodes.......2005-02-06
In "Til the Blood Runs Clear," our heroes become involved with bounty hunters while having repairs made on Crichton's module. There is some good interaction between Crichton and D'Argo, and there are some characters and plot points introduced here that will pay off in a big way many episodes from now. In "Rhapsody in Blue," we meet a group of Delvian dissidents with an unscrupulous leader who is not above deceiving Zhaan and playing with the memories of the other Moya crewmembers in order to get what she wants. Two good solid episodes.
Two Great FARSCAPE Episodes.......2002-03-07
One of the things that the FARSCAPE tv series does so well is explore the boundaries of television science fiction and take on the task of giving their stories interesting turns and twists of both plot and characterisation. The sixth DVD disc of the first season is no exception to this rule.
The first episode on this disc is "Till the Blood Runs Clear." In the story, Crichton and Aeryn, while out researching wormholes, are forced to land on the desert world of Dam-Ba-Da, and seek the help of the mechanic Furlow to repair Farscape 1. They discover that there are warning beacons out on the characters now, and Crichton and Aeryn are forced to pretend to be a pair of bounty hunters when they encounter two Vorcarians, seeking the rewards for the fugitives. Complicating matters are Zhaan's reaction to the solar flares in the area, and D'Argo's impatience with Crichton and his arrival on the planet - only to be captured by the bounty hunters, and putting Crichton in a dangerous position. This is a terrific episode that focuses on Crichton and Aeryn, and leads to some interesting revelations as Crichton and D'Argo come to a mutual understanding about their relationship. The extras here provide some interesting depth to the characters, and make some of the storyline a bit clearer. One terrific episode, that owes a lot to some of the sf movies that have been out there for a while.
"Rhapsody in Blue", the second offering on the DVD, is a story in which the strange dreams about past loves that Moya's crew have, coupled with Moya's own Starbursting in response to another pregnant Leviathan, leads the crew into the clutches of a group of renegade Delvians led by one Tahleen. She wants to learn the secrets that Zhaan possesses that prevent Zhaan from succumbing to her "dark impulses," but when Zhaan offers to show her the means in Unty, a Delvian form of joining of two spirits/souls, Tahleen takes the extra step and *steals* the knowledge from Zhaan. With the rest of the crew being disrupted by the other Delvians' manipulating their worst fears and desires, it's up to Crichton to show Zhaan the path back to her loveable self. A superb episode that sheds light on the Delvian Seek, on Zhaan's crime, and on the love of John Crichton's life. It has some interesting ramifications for the future, and sees several changes in the personalities of Moya's crew. The extra footage here enhances elements of the "Delvian experience", but isn't a necessity.
Like the previous DVDs in the series, the sixth DVD of FARSCAPE's first season has the commercials ads at the beginning... but the episodes presented and the sheer quality of both sound and picture are abso-frelling superb. While the extras on this DVD are once more pretty skimpy - presenting a Profile on Moya, Pilot, and the folks who bring these beings to life - the reason for the lack of extras on the last few DVDs has been explained as a licensing problem (one that has been cleared up, and will see other features once more, such as the commentary versions of the episodes on the DVDs, on them from the eleventh DVD on). That doesn't mitigate the cost of the DVDs however, as these are quite expensive, but FARSCAPE is a series well worth owning on DVD. Overall, "Till the Blood Runs Clear" and "Rhapsody in Blue" are terrific episodes of FARSCAPE that emphasize the true boundaries to which sf can be pushed, but the lack of extras make the DVDs not necessarily everyone's cup of tea.
STAR TREK Of THE FUTURE.......2002-02-13
Finally we have a Science Fiction show for the future. I enjoy how all the character seem to melt together. They are all easy to watch. The story line is simple and does not try to convince you that it is all possible. I also like the fact that each one of the characters have a weakness and the others back that characters weakness with a strength. I hope this show last for another 10 years.
Great Show!.......2001-10-16
This whole series is spectacular - words do not do it justice, you need to see it for yourself. If you like SciFi that is smart, witty, funny, exciting, scary, etc. and will make you think - then this series is definitely for you. Try it!
Very Pleasing!.......2001-09-13
I enjoyed this dvd like I have enjoyed the other ones.I really enjoyed ''Till the Blood runs Clear'' it shows John finding the beginnings of a wormhole and what that does to his module. The Aeryn-John relationship progresses some as well.Plus,D'Argo and John come to an understanding with one another. This episode also forshadowed some things in season 3 which I found to be interesting .
''Rhapsody in Blue'' was also a interesting episode for it showed some more delvians and more of Zhaan's past and why she is a prisoner on Moya.John we see has had a long-term relationship with a woman named Alex who he almost had proposed to which I found to be interesting thing to know as well. But I am a fan of the John-Aeryn relationship so I am glad he is in the UT with everyone on Moya. These two episodes showcase how far the characters have come in the short time the show had been on at this point. It is half way through season 1 and it has been One helluva ride!

Has the potential to be a great film, but falls far from its destination..........2007-07-13
`An American Rhapsody' follows the struggles of the Sander family as they flee from Hungary in the 1950's for America and then fight, first to bring their young daughter home and then to keep her safe. Because of the War the Sanders are fleeing their country in pursuit of a better life in the America's. Peter and Margit Sander have two young daughters, Maria and Zsuzsi, but because Zsuzsi is but an infant and a danger to the fleeing couple they must leave her behind to have her transported to them later. Peter and Margit escape with their daughter Maria, but Zsuzsi never arrives. Her grandmother couldn't bare the idea of something bad happening to her granddaughter and so she arranged for her to be raised by a foster family until it was safe for Zsuzsi to travel back to her parents.
Margit and Peter are understandably concerned, upset and desperate to have their daughter, but they aren't reunited with her for over five years. By this time Zsuzsi has become attached to her foster parents viewing that as her real family and thus shunning her mother and father. As she grows into adolescence she becomes rebellious and distant and then finally comes to the realization that she won't be able to accept her new life until she can officially say goodbye to her old life. Thus, she travels back to Budapest to reconnect with her foster parents.
The film, while not a total letdown, fails to live up the material. The performances by most of the cast are either too laidback and forgettable or so outlandish and overacted that they come across annoying. Scarlett Johansson, who plays the teenage Zsuzsi, does a decent job, but you can tell that her acting level has matured quite a bit since this film. Her character really isn't given enough meat to grow with the audience. She comes off a bit one dimensional and a little unsympathetic. You never see layers of emotion from her. You see her hating her parents and that's about all. When she finally does change it's not a gradual change as you would expect but an almost immediate change that comes off phony. You'd think that the director/writer would have paid a little more attention to detail when retelling her own story. Tony Goldwyn, who plays Peter, never really delves into his character. He becomes almost a prop for Natassja Kinski's overacting. Kinski actually does really well for the first half of the film and then, after Scarlett comes into frame Kinski's character goes a little insane and her performance gets a little over zealous.
The young girls in the film are actually the best actors here. They come across natural and sympathetic. Although I will say that to have young Zsuzsi learn English in what appears to be a week, and to know it so well, it's very unrealistic. The material is grade A, and it could have been turned into a grand epic masterpiece, but the directing was sloppy and the script could have used a revamp. It becomes B grade entertainment that, while worth a watch through, will never really validate multiple viewings. If you're a fan of Johansson's more recent award worthy work then I encourage you to see this movie, if not for the very reason of seeing her humble beginnings, but watching this and knowing that it was released the same year as `Ghost World' where she puts in a stellar performance is almost sad. With the right budget, a better director and a script revamp this could and should have been a great film, but it falls under the category of `popcorn flick', nothing more, nothing less.
I love this movie.......2007-06-01
A family escapes from Hungray in the early 1960s. They move to America but they have to leave their baby girl Susannah behind. Susannah grows up in Hungray with another family, thinking they are her real parents. When she turns six years old, her grandparents come and take her away to America where her real family is waiting for her. Susannah meets her family, her parents and older sister. She likes American culture, like TV and gum and pretty dresses bought from stores and she likes learning English from her older sister Maria (who also teaches a word that's a swear word.) It's funny when Susannah says though that the food tastes like, well, see for yourself. But Susannah gets homesick and wants to return to Hungray. Her father makes a promise to her that she might be able to when she's older if she gives America a chance. She does, but then nine years later when she's a teenager she gets into a fight with her mother and begs to return to her native country. Her father agrees since he did promise her long ago she could. So Susannah returns to her home and meets the old family that raised her as a little girl. She greets them and loves being back in her old home. She thinks going back might help find herself, but after discovering a secret about her mother from her grandmother, she slowly starts to realize why her parents left the country and about the real meaning of family and home. I love the music in the movie, it's so beautiful and I like that it was set in the 1960s. An interesting time period. Scarlett Johansson is an amazing young actress and is so talented and beautiful and mature for her age. The people who play her parents are just as good. I like Nastassja Kinski because she's so such a loving mother to Scarlett, who doesn't always appreciate her because Nastassja's character tries to protect her from the world. It's the best movie ever made.
An excellent little film.......2007-05-24
This film has it all: The Cold war, American family life in the 50s/60s, and the heart breaking emotion of the love of two different families towards the same child. The child grows up very confused in America, and the rest I will not spoil for you. This movie will be enjoyed by females a little more than males... except maybe mature males that can see the tribulations involved because they too have experienced something similar. It's a great movie for the entire family however, and so I recommended it highly.
DREAM VERSUS NOSTALGIA.......2007-04-22
Hungarian born Eva Gardos wrote and directed AN AMERICAN RHAPSODY, her first movie, at the age of 50. The film is about events of her own life and she dedicated it to her father and mother. I don't have to be a psychologist to assume that Eva Gardos waited her whole life to have an opportunity to express the sufferings hidden in her heart.
What I liked the most about this film is the way the director parallels the American dream lived by the little Zsuzsi's parents and Zsuzsi's nostalgia of the Hungarian lost paradise. Such a situation is not very often described in movies. It's more politically correct to show to the audience the successful enculturation of the second generation of a migrant family and the nostalgia of the parents or even their decision to return to their homeland as in Arthur Penn's Four Friends for instance, than a child's resistance to the American dream.
The performances of Nastassja Kinski, Scarlett Johansson and the little Raffaella Bánsági as Zsuzsi are praiseworthy and the direction of Eva Gardos always bashful and discreetly elegant.
A DVD zone paradise lost.
The Joyless Luck Club .......2007-04-10
This is one dreary film. Margit and Peter Sandor abruptly decide to flee Communist Hungary in 1950, and in doing so leave behind their infant daughter, Zsuzsi. Their plan to reunite with her in the United States becomes complicated and Zsuzsi consequently remains in Hungary. She lives with Jeno (Balazs Galko) and Teri (Zsuzsa Czinoczi), a childless couple she believes to be her parents. Margit (Nastassja Kinksi) and Peter (Tony Goldwyn), who had initially taken their older daughter, Maria, send for Zsuzsi after five years to join them in Los Angeles. Life in 1955 LA is far removed from life in 1955 rural Hungary, and little Zsuzsi has a difficult time adjusting. Discover her fate by watching the remainder of this film. While nostalgic and well-acted, this film offers very little joy as a reward for watching. It begins with the depressing prospect of two parents leaving behind one of their two children and does not brighten at all for the duration. Scenes that should bring optimism, such as the reunification of the Sandor family, are wrought with such a sense of imminent gloom that the viewer is left with an uneasy feeling. First-time director, Eva Gardos, does a very good job with the sentimental and dramatic aspects of her story. I would rather, however, she had been less heavy-handed and had more fun with the lighter episodes. This could have been a fantastic film, yet emerges as merely good. A final note: Those expecting to see Scarlett Johansson should be forewarned that she does not appear until an hour into the film.

The final film released in the U.S. by Japanese master Akira Kurosawa looks at the atomic blast at Nagasaki from a distance of more than 40 years, through the eyes of a woman who survived it--and the grandchildren who are spending the summer with her. Though she tries not to think about it, the memory of the bombing is with her every day, in the family she lost and the scars she still carries. But the grandchildren insist on seeing the memorial, which brings it home to her once again--and to us. Though sometimes slow going (and what is Richard Gere doing in this movie, as her Amer-Asian nephew?), Rhapsody in August is a story about family and about living in the present while never being allowed to forget the past. --Marshall Fine

Poetry, Japanese style..........2007-04-20
As we all know, this is one of the last works of Akira Kurosawa, the Master in movie making.
He was also known by his friends as Kurosawa-san or by those who admired him as a teacher, as Kurosawa-sensei.
One of the things one immediately notices in his movies (especially in his later period, but even in some earlier works - although filmed in Black and WHite), is the Art of image and color composition. Kurosawa was a painter in his own right, a highly talented one at that.
Every scene is a "tableau" in which the action and the dialogues performed by the actors is just an additional element to the poetry Kurosawa intended to create for his movies.
So it is that even here in "Rhapsody in August", the theme of two families of the same common ancestry, but living in two totally different countries with almost completely different values, coming in touch with each other, forms a case study about conflicts and commonalities among two worlds.
We have seen many stories like these, but never so vividly told as here.
But this is not just another banal tale. The unfolding of the story is so masterful that it becomes a dance, a poetic dance.
What one also notices, is that our world and Kurosawa shown worlds are not so different as one may think. There is more to bind us, as human beings, than meets the eye.
Every time I watch a Kurosawa movie, I am in awe and wonder at how much life experience and passion this man did put into his work.
This is the true gift to all of us, as mankind.
Just now am I beginning to understand the full scope of Akira Kurosawa's work load. His legacy to us is hidden in each and everyone of his movies.
It is up to us to decipher them appropriately. This is the key, the true key, in order to fully understand the man Kurosawa.
Thank you Kurosawa-sensei.
I would say that this is a must have.
Still life with atomic bomb.......2006-08-12
Even a master like Kurosawa must occasionally make a non-masterpiece. Overwhelmed by his own desire to make a political point, he forgot to be a story teller and "Rhapsody in August" ends up falling flat. Not that it is a bad film, as even a flat Kurosawa film is worth watching, and there are flashes of pure brilliance and some incredibly moving images, but on the whole it doesn't compare favorably with his body of work.
The story is an inter-generational one, focused on an aging grandmother, Kane, who hosts her grandchildren in her rural home in Nagasaki while their parents visit relatives in Hawaii. Kane is a hibakusha, one who experienced the dropping of the atomic bomb during WWII, during which her husband was killed. For Kane, the atomic bomb is a very real thing, while for her grandchildren it is a distant sob-story they were forced to memorize at school. Richard Gere makes an awkward appearance as Kane's half-American grandson from Hawaii, speaking stilted Japanese, but doing his best to fit into the overall story.
Much of the controversy on this film is about Kurosawa's point of view of Japan as a victimized nation of the US war crime of dropping the atomic bomb, a point of view that is very much prevalent in Japan even today. To the Japanese, the story of Nagasaki is very much that of regular civilians like Kane, who were not part of the war, who were not off killing and maiming in China or doing anything else the US politicians use to justify the bomb, but who suffered the brunt of the US attack in spite of their innocence. Much of the story rings true in this sense. When I visited the Nagasaki Peace Park, and saw the monuments donated by the nations of the world, I too looked for the US monument and was surprised not to find one. Seeing this scene played out on film hit close to home, and I realized that must be the general reaction to everyone who visits the park.
But the flaws of "Rhapsody in August" are not the controversial message, but just the general malaise of a film without inspiration. The scenes of the urban schoolchildren at play in rural Japan are excellent, and a spot-on Summer Idyll of kids that age stuck in that situation. Kane's scenes with Richard Gere are quite touching, showing the power of communication across generations and language, simply by being together. However much of the story seems to go forward in a heavy-handed rather than natural direction, and much of the dialog is stiff and unnatural.
A Real Rhapsody, Like Maborosi - A Specialized Choice.......2006-05-28
This movie reminds me a lot of Maborosi: slow, beautiful, true ring to it for its conclusion.
If you want action, don't watch this movie. The actors seemed a little stiff all through the feature. And come on, no teenager stays with Grandma to help her remember her brothers and sisters! A few scenes were a little fake like that.
If you like Maborosi, you will like this movie.
Kurosawa's Majesty on a Low Flame in Minor League Anti-War Film.......2005-08-02
The best of intentions certainly infuse Akira Kurosawa's penultimate film released in 1991, but unfortunately it really doesn't move me despite the worthy subject of dealing with the years-later aftermath of the atomic bomb dropped in Japan. Much of the problem is the glacial pacing and the stilted emphasis on the children's perspective which prevents the film from gaining any subtlety or emotional resonance. Set forty-five years after the end of WWII, the plot centers on four Japanese children who visit their grandmother Kane in Nagasaki for the summer. As the anniversary of the atomic attack draws near, they learn about the bomb's deadly legacy. Their grandfather died in the blast, and as we learn, Kane has never really resolved her quiet resentment. Every August, she pays tribute to her dead husband at a religious shrine. Unfortunately, Kurosawa paints the children in such broad, sitcom-level strokes that make it nearly impossible to empathize with their inquisitive concern about their grandmother.
On the other hand, 86-year old Sachiko Murase is exquisite as the wizened Kane as she exhibits the inner conflict within her character when she realizes she may have to face the prospect of meeting Japanese-American relatives in Hawaii, including an older brother she cannot recall knowing among ten siblings. The brother, who has become a naturalized American citizen and married a Caucasian, is ailing and wants to see Kane before he dies. Desperate to visit Hawaii, one of the children writes a letter to the brother, which prompts the brother's son to visit to apologize for the bombing. The weight of a national conscience seems overemphasized here, especially as embodied by Richard Gere in an extended cameo as the brother's half-Japanese son, Clark. Gere's appearance, despite his good intentions in light of his pacifist position, is distracting to say the least, especially since he does not look the least bit Japanese. While his accent is decent enough, his cadence when speaking is halting to the point of sounding rather Berlitz-trained. It's actually not a bad performance but certainly not a necessary one given the number of Japanese-American actors who could have played the part with greater ease.
The film ends on a rather surreal note as Kane fights a rainstorm that has clouds that remind her of the bomb's immediate aftermath. This sequence is fraught with symbolism but seems emotionally vague as it goes on endlessly. There are random moments when the Kurosawa touch is evident, for example the composed shots of the old women in prayer or the use of a gnarled jungle gym as a symbol of the bomb (and perhaps as a tribute to the playground built in his classic film, "Ikiru"). He also effectively uses Vivaldi's "Stabat Mater" as background music during key scenes. At the same time, as a Japanese-American, I was hoping that Kurosawa would have delved into the complexities of the decisions behind the atomic bomb and how the Japanese have attempted to reconcile the act with their own culpability during the war. Instead, the movie becomes a highly simplified anti-war polemic under the guise of a family film.
Most beautiful film.......2005-06-27
In Akira Kurosawa's masterpiece, a group of young people, through the guidance of their aging grandmother, discover what it means to grow up during the bombing of Nagasaki. The link to their past appears in the form of the AmerAsian cousin, who solemnly joins them at the memorial but then must return to Hawaii for the death of his father. As the elders age and near death, it is the children who witness life through new eyes, whose vision is tempered by the wisdom of their elders who have seen the unspeakable and yet live long enough to transmit the knowledge and the reverence for life in the face of man's destructive folly that is war.

a brilliant film worth your time to watch! makes you wonder about life!!.......2007-07-25
WATCHING THIS FILM MAKES YOU REFLECT ON YOUR OWN LIFE!! There is nothing make belief about it. It realy shakes you up about what people go through and what they feel about life and how they percieve it! Its probably true that most of the time we follow our parents life style...maybe not all the way...but they definately affect our way of thinking! And some people are able to change and make it thru the obstacles and some people are just not meant to be!! You should also check out the film PLAYING BY HEART with angelina jolie, shawn conneri and alot of other famous actors.! That too was a wake up call to how certain people find it easy to adapt and others are afraid of change while others fight for what the truley feel in their heart!
What to Expect in Love and Relationships.......2004-11-16
This movie is for anyone who second guesses the person they are with and want to be married to them. The main character, Gwynn Marcus, played by Sarah Jessica Parker, is engaged to her boyfriend Matt. Matt is the one for her and she knows it. But she second-guesses the relationship because she has family members whose expectations of marriage are based on fantasy. On top of that, her parents drive each other crazy and commit adultery behind the other's back. Matt, feeling that she isn't self-assured ends their relationship; and I can't blame him. Any man that possesses his qualities is a taker. Gwynn has an affair with her mother's lover wishing that he's the one but realizes that he's not the one for her and not to mention, he slept with her mother.
This movie was a good movie. Four stars is enough to rate it. Frankly, these folks needed therapy and Miami's scenery isn't exactly that kind of therapy.
Miami "Rhap"sody..............2002-12-31
Here is a film that is so negative about the possibilty of finding true love, it should be banned from sale or rental to all engaged couples. In fact, anyone who has a positive outlook on relationships and doesn't wish to wallow in the mire of adultery, divorce and human failure, should skip it altogether. I think that covers everyone who is not one of the characters in this film, or similarly inclined. ............... Sarah Jessica Parker who is the only saving grace here, is Gwen, an engaged lady who is surrounded at every turn by dysfunctional relationships. This film is not even close to reality at any point. No one knows this many unhappy people buried in illicit tawdry affairs, even if they live in Hollywood! In fact, this film tries so hard to be NOW and HIP and COOL, like this is what you can expect from todays relationships. Totally absurd. Gwens mom, played my Mia Farrow, is having an affair with her mothers aka Gwens grandmothers nurse, played by Antonio Banderas in an earlier fleeting role. Makes you wonder why he got later roles. Gwens dad is terribly upset, but mom reveals HE has been having plenty of affairs for years too. Big surprise! What is Gwen to do? Go to her brother for advice, of course. She arrives in the middle of a fight between him and his pregnant wife, they couldn't possibly be cooing on the couch happily now could they? Of course not. What is THEIR fight about? His affair with his partners model wife Naomi Campbell. Wow, let's play the interracial card possibilities here into the film for a little added zest! Of course, she isn't a single model, I said partners WIFE. Yet another wayward spouse to add to an ever growing roster of remorse. There is just NO hope for this family or anyone they touch illicitly in cheap brightly painted motels. .............. So there you have the basics. Everyone is married, everyone is miserable. They're all cheaters, liars, adulterers, and just not any sort of example for poor Gwen to reason herself into not being afraid of the possibilty of her own marriage. The poor girl, even I got depressed at the whole situation. ............. If you want to watch a movie that emphasizes all the negative possibilities of married life, here is a perfect film for the committment shy to bolster his or her argument. However, if you still believe in true love and happily ever after, you will want to avoid this like the plague. Especially don't watch this with anyone you love. Some romantic comedy, it sends a message to the faithful like THEY have the problems. If you are curious, go ahead and watch. Don't say I didn't warn you.
light woody-allen parody.......2002-01-29
Miami Rhapsody stars Sarah Jessica Parker as Gwynn Marcus, one of several sibs of a prominent, wealthy, Jewish and dysfunctional family in Miami. Though things seem okay on the outside, tangled relationship problems threaten every quarter of the family. Her brother Jordan (Kevin Pollack) cheats on his pregnant wife with a high-strung model (Naomi Campbell); Her sister's (Carla Gugino) new husband is a pro-football player plagued by career insecurities and terminal cheapness; both of her parents (Mia Farrow and Paul Mazursky) cheat on each other; and she remains unhappy if only because she's the sort of person who's so concerned about happiness that she must strangle the happiness out of wherever it pops up in her life. Though she's engaged, Gwynn soon finds herself attracted to the male nurse (Antonio Banderas) who cares for the family's stroke-ridden grandmother.
"Rhapsody" is a lot like an overlong episode of "Sex and the City" without the neat closure of that show's half-hour snippets or the materialism or communal honesty of that show's leads. Gwynn obsesses over Miami and sex, noting that both are extremely popular despite the inherent messiness of either. I had never seen "SatC" when catching this flick back in '95. Instead I recognized the flick as more of a parody of Woody Allen movies - the sort of rambling flick centered around a city (not NYC this time) and the hang-ups of those who endure it. The cinematography, Gwynn's neuroses (the film opens with Gwynn lamenting to a therapist), casting of Mia Farrow and even the opening credits hint at one of those small Woody Allen flicks that breezes through town without warning. "Rhapsody" works mostly on its stars' ernestness but also depends on some familiarity with that sort of Woody-ish kind of film. I doubt anybody who's never seen an Allen film will find this film more than amusing. Despite its dark take on marriage and relationships, I eventually married the girl I took to see it.
A Fun Walk Down Romantic Comedy/ Light-hearted Film Lane.......2000-12-18
I enjoyed watching this film, and give it three and a half stars. This film is one to rent when you just want to kick back and laugh a little. It is entertaining and light, and clever in parts. It's good for the kind of night when you're not in the mood for subtitles because you'd have to actually read them. :) Think "When Harry Met Sally," "You've Got Mail," or "Playing By Heart." I'd have been sad to miss it at the video store, as it is sweet in its heart, and had me laughing out loud more than once.
The film is about a family of three adult children and their parents, and the love lives of all of them. It starts with Sarah Jessica Parker's character (Gwyn) getting engaged, and her sister getting married. From there, things get a little messy. Gwyn, unsure of the state of her union (to-be), goes to her mother for advice about marital life. What she finds then is that her mother is having an affair. Shocked and surprised at first, Gwyn anxiously watches as her inner circle of family and friends fall prey to infidelity/relationship-confusion one by one, with no happy outcome in sight. As her wedding day draws near, she must come to some conclusion about her own impending marriage. Should she tie the knot, or are there existing problems in her relationship which would only be made worse by a walk down the aisle? She obsesses. She stresses. She considers dating her mother's lover!
Along the way, there are funny scenes and conversations, and a lot of the type of banter (especially from Jessica Parker) that made Sex and the City such a runaway hit. Parker's role here is reminiscent of her role on Sex and the City. As in that show, she plays a writer, here an ad-writer who reluctantly sets her sights on writing for sitcoms. She has trouble along the way, though, as her work is considered "too creative." This was classic SJP mode, as she is both sexy *and* smart! Jessica Parker may be tinier than most women (or men) I've ever seen, but she packs a wallop when it comes to magnetic acting and comedy skill. Her energy always shines on-screen, and this film is no exception. Gil Bellows (from TV's Ally McBeal) does a decent job playing her zoologist fiance who may or may not move to Africa when his career dictates that he should. There are patches of chemistry between them, and they are believably matched.
Mia Farrow's performance as Gwyn's mother is indeed reminiscent of her acting in her ex's (Woody Allen's) films. Farrow's husband in the film is strong in his role, as are other supporting actors, especially Carla Gugino, as Gwyn's sister, a lusty newlywed. One lackluster standout as far as the acting is Naomi Campbell. She may be one of the most beautiful women on the planet, but she really could do with figuring out whether or not to keep that British accent when playing in an American film, and how to get excited about acting/learn to lose herself in her role instead of striding her way through it as if she's merely rehearsing her lines.
I have to say that, unlike another reviewer on this page, I really *like* the one-liners that appear in this film, and in shows like Sex and the City. What can I say, they make me laugh, and that can't be that bad, can it? This film is funny and has some great lines, including some banter about election woes, this time about Bush *Senior*, and Ross Perot. :) (The film came out in '95). Watching it so soon after Indecision 2000, and feeling many of the same things myself in reference to George Junior this time around was an unexpected highlight.
As an aside, another thing I liked about the film was that it touched on all three generations: Gwyn's, her parents, and her grandparents (specifically, her grandmother, who, after a series of strokes, might not say much, but who showed grace and kindness with her smile, her eyes, and the touch of her hands.) I like that the film had this window into a nursing home/elderly life. People need to remember their elders more than they do these days. The film also briefly made the point that we shouldn't be too selfish in our lives, when we consider the horrors that previous generations have had to endure on a daily basis. Here, the experience of the grandmother having to flee the Nazis when she was a young woman. Jessica Parker's character says, in essense, people used to have real problems, war, etc, etc, [but] "I couldn't live a month without cable TV and a shower. We're a generation of weaklings." So some hints of deepness do exist in this shallow-ish romantic comedy!
Overall, I think Miami Rhapsody is a cute little film which will perhaps be enjoyed most by fans of Sex and the City and similar works.

Not Worth It.......2007-01-04
I was very disappointed with this DVD. The moves are boring and corny, and the instructor did not really inspire me at all. Also the music was horrible. I don't like to say negative things about other's creative works, but this is not worth the money.

A Fascinating Document to view once or twice.......2007-06-22
Right off the bat I have to say that this is a peculiar video. The body of this DVD is a conversation between Bill and his brother Harry that touches upon Bill's musical philosophy. The conversation meanders, touching upon the subject of music education and finding inspiration and creativity through connecting with what Evans refers to as "The Universal Mind". It is interesting to find Evans' ideas so in line with Jung's concept of the Collective Unconscious, but then, Bill had a highly developed intellect and was obviously a well rounded individual, judging from his articulate and almost professorial presentation of his ideas.
During the video, Evans occasionally makes his way to the piano at his brother's bequest to demonstrate some of his ideas, but this is not anything approaching a performance. Each segment of this free ranging conversation is preceded by a somewhat glib introduction by Steve Allen. As much as I admire Mr Allen I found his explanations to be tedious and sophmoric and skipped them the next time I viewed the DVD with a fellow Evans enthusiast.
To sum it up, there is not enough playing on this disc to warrant the label of "music video". As such it will appeal mostly to hardcore Evans afficionados who are curious to experience the man. Having finally acquired a copy of this long lost video, I can say I wish I had just rented it through Netflix. It is not something I am inclined to revisit, except perhaps to share it with another Evans fan. In short, fascinating but not essential viewing. I would recommend the Oslo concerts first. A great pairing of compelling performances and an interesting bonus interview at the end.
The genuine article: essential to knowing the real Bill........2007-03-17
This is the most articulate, insightful Bill Evans I've heard or seen. Near the beginning of the presentation, before Steve Allen's introduction, he debunks the notion that musicians are better music critics than the layman. The musician is so involved in the difficult mechanics of the music that his priority is to maintain the listener's naivete about what's required to produce genuine art (brilliant!). He goes on to refute the notion that jazz is a "style"; it's a "process." With animation, passion, and utmost sincerity he discusses improvisation vs. composing, the "universal mind" that is the birthright of us all, the right choice for the particular individual, teaching and learning. He demonstrates and emphasizes some of the same principles about simplicity, musical form, and the pointlessness of "overplaying" that come out in his much later visit with Marian McPartland on "Piano Jazz."
I've never witnessed a professional who was more generous, insistent, and focused in his advice--in spite of his reputation for reticence and shyness. Moreover, this is not merely an impressive Bill Evans but a likable Bill. He's not the god-like enigmatic persona but a nerdish, rather awkward, downright charming guy with inescapably bad teeth (better to have those in need of repair than his marvelous hands and fingers, which appear as gigantic--in diameter as well as length--as ever. Give his brother Harry much of the credit for drawing out, for once, Bill Evans the musician in the fullest and most real and genuine sense. I've heard so many jazz "instructional" tapes that were pure jive, but this one is the noteworthy exception.
Caveat (besides the comparatively short length and high price): the audio sucks, and even the visuals are occasionally marked by dust, splices and jitteriness. So in the final analysis, it's a video more for the educator or Evans' groupie than for "Junior," who will no doubt fall asleep due to the level of verbal and musical discourse (better Bill had used Twinkle Little Star instead of "Star Eyes" and kept his references to Elvis and the Beatles rather than Mozart and Bach). Also, Steverino's contributions will not make the video any more endearing to a generation unfamiliar with Steve Allen (try showing them The Benny Goodman Story first).
God, those teeth are bad--big gaps, sticking out like one of Jerry Lewis' characters. This is a guy who has had little time to consider anything other than music. The articulateness, the passion, the animation, the sheer candor--Bill transcends the limitations of the medium.
All the same, if this is your first Bill Evans on DVD, reconsider, save yourself 10-15 bucks for now, and pick up the newly released "Oslo Concerts," a beautifully recorded example of two Evans' concerts separated by 14 years.

The 1998 Lugano Festival presented this elegant concert of George Gershwin's orchestral music, including the colorful Cuban Overture and the Rhapsody in Blue. Gershwin's strongest claim to immortality, however, lies in his vocal music--Porgy & Bess and dozens of songs written for Broadway shows but able to stand by themselves. No singing is heard on this disc, but the vocal music is well-represented in a symphonic suite from Porgy & Bess and transcriptions for piano and orchestra of three songs: "Embraceable You," "'S Wonderful," and "The Man I Love."
In a sense, the program is a showcase for pianist Adam Makowicz, who solos gracefully in the Rhapsody and the songs with a self-confident virtuosity that gets to the heart of the music. In the Rhapsody, Makowicz fluently and imaginatively improvises cadenzas, as Gershwin did for the first performance, producing a version that is different from all others. --Joe McLellan

Not only was the music beautifully done with a nice spectrum of Gershwin's work, but the introductions by the director were just informative enough without distracting from the flow. I enjoyed the live setting as well.

I love this movie..........2005-12-23
Perhaps I'm a little biased because I absolutely LOVE Wood Harris but this was the first film I ever saw him in and I loved his performance in this movie. Not only was he SEXY as ever, but he was also sensitive, which is a side that is not often revealed by so-called rap artists (his role in the movie). Although I don't really like Gina Rivera (based on her role in Soul Food-the movie), I did like her performance in this movie and thought that the lead characters worked well together. This movie was intriguing, it kept me interested from start to finish and it's one of those movies that, while not Grammy award-winning, is a nice reprieve from the real world...especially the drama! This is one of my favorite all-time BET movies (this and Masquerade) and although so many people (surprisingly) gave it a bad review, I enjoyed watching it and will add it to my collection so that I can watch it anytime I want!
yall crazy,to me this was a nice movie!!!.......2005-12-08
on a scale from 1 to 10,i'll give it an 8!!!
It wasn't that bad!!!.......2005-11-14
This movie is okay...Not great, but not bad either. If you are a jaded person, you may not be able to get it (or want to). This movie requires you to have some faith in love and humanity. Wood Harris is an up and coming actor...Not your "traditional" leading male. Lisa Raye is beautiful, and plays the role of conniving diva very well. This movie has 'umph'...an intangible lure that keeps you watching. This makes up for much of the rigidness of the filmmaking...All in all, worth the watch.
Wasn't the Best.......2005-03-22
This wasn't the best movie I had ever seen, but Lisa Raye was so sexy in this movie. I watched it because it was on BET one day and I had nothing else to do. Lisa Raye was the only thing that attracted me to the film. Other than that, don't waste your time.
It was interesting.......2004-10-19
It was interesting that i actually sat and watched this whole movie. The acting was the worst i had ever seen. The funniest part in the movie to me was when he was running behind the girl yelling, "LeNOIR! LeNOIR! LOL...The only thing I did like about this movie was the song the girl sang..."Rhap-SO-deee...!" After i suffered through the movie i found the song actually stuck on me and that's how I came across this review board. I'm trying to find out if that song was really recorded and if so, who sings it. No offense actors...everybody's gotta start somewhere.
