Customer Reviews:
An interesting movie, but not Mansfield Park........2007-09-06
This would have been an interesting movie if the film makers had titled it something other than "Mansfield Park." However, since they chose to present it as a rendition of the Jane Austen novel, I think they took far too many liberties with the story.
The biggest difference was in the character of Fanny Price. No matter how badly we in the twenty-first century want to believe it, she was *not* a modern, outspoken, independent woman. She was deeply conservative. If the film makers disliked that aspect, why choose this book to film at all?
No film can completely capture the spirit of a novel. But when I watch an adaptation I want to feel that it was created with a fundamental level of understanding of the book, and appreciation for it. This film fails.
I think this is one of the best Austen movies (so shoot me.).......2007-08-31
So often Austen movies are mis-cast and the characters you loved become just annoying. I think this movie was cast great. I realize that some liberties were taken, but I thought the tone was great. It moves fast, and Fanny Price is given more life than the book did. It makes her out to be a little bit more like Austen herself would be in my immagination. When so many of the other movies have blown it (by casting too old, too stupid, too mean etc,) this movie got a lot of things right. It made me want to read the book again which was probably a good goal for them.
An improvement over the book.......2007-08-30
I greatly enjoyed this movie. While the characters are different from the book, the plot is essentially the same. The literary Fanny is, to put it bluntly, a "drip" and the literary Edmund is a sanctimonious prig. The Fanny in the film is bright, sardonic, and literary-minded, much like the young Jane Austen, while still being high-minded and loving. This Edmund, while still being serious and with a vocation for the church, is more capable of having fun. One can see why they're together. In the book, I couldn't.
Rent this. Don't buy........2007-07-27
I'm glad I chose to rent this before I bought. I own many Austen romances in movie form, but I won't bother buying this one. I didn't care for the interpretation at all. The cast had decent potential, but no one really stood out. This really wasn't romantically protrayed. I also didn't appreciate the raunchy undertones that were added. Not necessary and not appropriate for a wide audience.
Fascinatingly brilliant, romantic, and dark at the same time.......2007-07-14
This is one of my favorite movies and the best film version of Mansfield Park that has been made. Frances O'Connor does a wonderful job of capturing Fanny's emotions and letting us see into her mind. What's more, the romance between Fanny and Edmund is full of the tension and yet sweet, innocent, and deep love that Jane Austen portrayed in the book. All in all, a wonderful a film, one you have to see if you loved the book!

Writer/director Ol Parker's debut takes its title from "Happy Together" by the Turtles ("Imagine me and you / and you and me") and its inspiration from the romantic comedies of Richard Curtis (Love Actually). There's a twist. Flower shop owner Luce (Lena Headey, The Brothers Grimm) is gay. Newlywed Rachel (a convincingly UK-accented Piper Perabo, Lost and Delirious) is straight. The two meet at Rachel's wedding--Luce designed the floral arrangements--and feel an instant connection. Rachel brushes it off. After all, the charming Heck (Matthew Goode, Match Point) was her best friend long before he became her husband. Shortly after the ceremony, however, she begins to feel as if something is missing. She starts making excuses to see Luce. First it's to thank her for the flowers, then it's to invite her to dinner with Heck and their on-the-make pal Cooper (a hilarious Darren Boyd)...who's crushed when he discovers that Luce prefers women. Rachel, meanwhile, finds married life pleasant enough, but only really feels alive when she's with Luce. It's tricky, because she loves Heck and doesn't want to hurt his feelings, so she and Luce decide to stop seeing each other. But the bond between the two is too powerful for either to resist. What it may lack in originality, Imagine Me & You makes up for in an enchanting soundtrack and sensitive performances from its three likable leads. --Kathleen C. Fennessy
Description
Piper Perabo lights up the screen as Rachel, a blushing bride whose perfect nuptials take a surprising turn at the altar. An innocent glance between Rachel and an unexpected wedding guest is all it takes to spark a 'love at first sight' romance with a surprising twist -- the object of Rachel's affection is a smart and sensuous... woman! Their shocking romance causes quite a stir amongst her family and friends as Rachel is forced to choose between her husband and the girl of her dreams. Say 'I do' to the wonderfully witty film that Cosmopolitan calls "a refreshing romantic comedy."

Imagine - A Great Movie.......2007-09-04
I really could watch this film over and over. That is why I purchased it. It is my second favorite movie of this genre. It is sweet and beautiful.
Sensitive and Humorous Film about a Controversial Subject.......2007-09-02
"Imagine Me and You" is a fine film about a controversial subject (i.e. lesbianism) with gentle and humorous performances by the entire cast of performers.
The lead actresses (Piper Perabo and Lena Heady) gave credible and sensitive performances without becoming advocates for a particular position in the debate about human sexuality.
The story relates that true love can happen between two individuals of the same gender without sensationalizing the experience.
Truly, a touching and humanizing film that I recommend for ages 17 and over.
Very Cute.......2007-09-01
Thoroughly enjoyed this movie. Mind you, it's not terribly taxing on the brain, but I felt it was pretty well done and covered a topic that is more common than thought. If only life ended the way this movie does! Definitely recommend it for the gay/lesbian collection in your home. Then again, one of my favorite movies is "It's In the Water" so....
Best thing about this film is Matthew Goode.......2007-08-26
I loved "kissing jessica stein" and so i figured i'd give this a go. Well, no! Piper Perabo just isn't a good actress. I mean she tries and you can tell, but she just stinks! She pouts the entire way through the film and is put in obsurd situations, the only time she doesn't pout to convey the point 'she's truly found herself' is at the very end! Save your money and time and rent "Kissing Jessica Stein" or "Lost and Delirious" which she did when she was 12 and was to young for us to see how rubbish she really is!
Great Movie.......2007-08-16
This was a nice British comedy with a few out of the normal twist and turns.

Misguided stepmothers, romantic betrayals, secret marriages--these are not just the makings of modern soap operas; this is what makes the BBC's delightful four-episode miniseries Wives and Daughters come to life. Sweet Molly Gibson (played artfully by Justine Waddell, who communicates more with a squint of her eyes than most actresses can with pages of dialogue) was living life pleasantly when her widowed father (Bill Paterson) decides that, for the good of his daughter, he must remarry. In comes Claire, played to screeching perfection by Francesca Annis. Molly's life is turned upside down by the usually well meaning but off-the-mark Claire, who insists on things being done the proper way. Added to the stew is Claire's beautiful, educated daughter, Cynthia (Keeley Hawes), and the Hamleys, a well-to-do family headed by a squire (Michael Gambon) who is not happy about the romantic interests of his sons.
As is typical with BBC miniseries, the quality writing and lush sets add to the overall appeal. Andrew Davies, who adapted Pride and Prejudice and Bridget Jones's Diary, penned the marvelous screenplay (based on Elizabeth Gaskell's unfinished novel). It's impossible not to compare this to the ever-popular Pride, and Wives and Daughters measures up. --Jenny Brown
Description
From the team that brought you "Pride and Prejudice." Set in a richly portrayed society well-stocked with eccentric nobles and gossipy villagers, the story centers around 17-year-old Molly Gibson, the only daughter of a respected country Doctor.
Customer Reviews:
Easy watching:.......2007-08-02
This is an easy watch. Easy to follow. Easy to hear--love the sound track
and the English accents. Easy to be taken in by the whole story line.....
Good stuff........2007-07-23
I fell in love with Elizabeth Gaskell's other book that was made into a movie, North and South, so when Amazon recommended Wives and Daughters, I was very happy to see something else by her.
To be honest I was not instantly in love with the material as it is sometimes slow and I kept waiting for it to pick up. It eventually does and I believe that the viewer's patience is rewarded. The romance was nowhere on the realm of North and South or Pride and Prejudice but like everything else in this miniseries, it grows on you. Overall, I liked it.
Beautiful, romantic story.......2007-07-16
This is one of the best films I have ever seen and enjoyed. The acting, especially by Justine Waddell as Molly, was superb. It is a wonderful story depicting love and the beauty of family through many characters in the film but most appreciated in Molly and her love and affection for Roger. This is a wholesome film, which is a huge plus, and being a hopeless romantic myself, one that I thoroughly enjoyed along with the music. If I could, I would have rated it more than 5 stars.
A Period Classic.......2007-07-13
This movie follows the life of a 17 year old "motherless" country girl who struggles with love and loss. She challenges the gossipers and noble standards and exemplifies a young woman of integrity and loyalty. If you like "Pride & Prejudice" then this is a movie for you. A MASTERPIECE WORTH SEEING!!
Excellent find!.......2007-07-13
I discovered this item through Amazon. What a great find! WYSWYG. You won't be disappointed.

Frequently given short shrift as a blue movie (which it is) and as mindless (which it isn't), director Adrian Lyne's follow-up to Flashdance (insert own joke here) is a thoughtful, smutty film about a bad sexual relationship. It follows the two-month affair between Elizabeth, an art-gallery dealer, and John, a Wall Street exec. The relationship spirals downward into raunchier sex (filmed, by the way, quite nicely) but principally is about two adults doing adult things but not acting anything like real adults. Attempts at actual human connection, about the longing to be "good," are present here and make this an above-average erotic film. Rourke is just honing his scumbag, bad-boy persona; but it doesn't overwhelm. Lots and lots of Kim Basinger. --Keith Simanton
Customer Reviews:
BDSM Movie.......2007-06-20
This is not your average soft porn - this movie is about a BDSM relationship. If you don't know what that stands for, this may not be the movie for you. If you do, this is one of the best you'll ever see. The seduction and the energy between these two is incredible. Kim Basinger's striptease, performed to Joe Cocker's "You Can Leave Your Hat On," is absolutely classic. They even managed to make the midnight snack scene hot, even though I kept thinking, "Who's going to clean that up?"
This film has a well-deserved cult status in the genre. If you're able to appreciate the beauty of this type of relationship, the only real disappointment is the way the movie ends.
If you love the story, I would also recommend the book this was based on, Nine and a Half Weeks: A Memoir of a Love Affair. However, if you find the ending of this movie depressing, you definitely don't want to see the sequel, Another 9 1/2 Weeks, unless you just can't get enough of Mickey Rourke scowling.
Kim Basinger is so beautiful and Mickey's rugged, macho.......2007-05-23
pre-pro boxer face are very sexy indeed. My problem was with Elizabeth (Kim), with this type of encounter, either you're into it or your're not. Don't try to make it anything else than it is. Either enjoy it or leave. Which is what she did at the end. Once this type of relationship is exposed to light it dies, because it was all an illusion anyway. But very erotic. Enjoy!
9 1/2 Weeks.......2007-03-09
It was HOT! For couples who are feeling frisky, this might add a spark that'll lead to a flame. Kim was a her best, so was Mickey.
Probably worth seeing once.......2007-01-23
The physical dvd itself is encased in a rather flimsy cardboard and plastic folder. The opening scenes looked like the transfer to dvd was made not from a master but rather from some well-worn film salvaged from a cellar. Beyond these superficial but distracting esthetics (I guess you get what you pay for) the movie starts out with reasonable characters and circumstances. The mental and emotional submission is gradual, calculated, and believable. Unfortunately, the movie seems to go downhill very quickly after Basinger's first violently achieved submission to Rourke -- or perhaps Basinger's plight just became too unmistakably sad and relevant for the movie's message to be well-received. Any possible maturation in Rourke's character as hinted by the end of the movie is weakly developed at best.
when a man loves a woman.......2007-01-23
A perfect duet of Mickey Rourke and Kim Basinger makes you forget about everything, lose your head and yourself in the world of love, passion and sexual fantasy.
Perfect style of movie, perfect match of actors - that makes big value of film. Very sensual movie that have nothing to do with all bad things that was said about it.
5 stars for actors, scenario, directing and perfect act.

Although it was unfortunately ignored during its brief theatrical release, this sumptuously seductive production is that rarest of cinematic breeds, the (barely) respectable guilty pleasure. Combining historical fact with hysterical anachronisms of language and mannerism, it's been tailored for maximum contemporary appeal but maintains a lush, romantic feel for its factual 16th-century tale of Venetian love, lust, and political repression. Catherine McCormack (Mel Gibson's ill-fated bride in Braveheart) delivers a star-making performance as the "dangerous beauty" who becomes a skillful courtesan to pursue her forbidden love for a dashing Venetian senator (Rufus Sewell). It's all rather silly in a high-toned fashion, and the film turns dour when the church intervenes with a Scarlet Letter-like papal inquest. But the movie's joyously ribald vitality is utterly irresistible, and the casting of McCormack with Jaqueline Bisset (as her mother and courtesan mentor) is a stroke of pure genius. Merchant-Ivory would've made a smarter film from this material, but it probably wouldn't be nearly as entertaining. --Jeff Shannon
Customer Reviews:
The best, most sensual movie I have ever seen.......2007-08-05
I love this movie, it is one of my top three favorite movies of all time. Catherine McCormack as Veronica Franco is totally credible as the envy of all Venetian courtesans and the love of many, many powerful men . I have seen Dangerous Beauty 14 times and I cry in the potent courtroom scene every single time. She is passionate, beautiful, brilliant, witty, playful and sensual. I thought her huge wardrobe of gowns were gorgeous. Rufus Sewell does an equally fabulous job as Marco and is the perfect match for Veronica. I own the soundtrack as well, it's mesmerizing.
Romantic and Accurate.......2007-07-25
I first watched this movie in my university Italian Renaissance class, highlighting the importance and power women held as courtesans in Venice. Not only is this movie brilliantly acted, with gorgeous sets and costuming, but historically accurate. Veronica Franco (Catherine McCormack) indeed existed and was not only a prominent courtesan, but a published poet and influential political figure in Venice. The movie follows her transformation from a stubborn, free willed young woman with no dowry to a strong-minded provider for her family. The options facing Veronica are bleak--go to a convent, or provide income for the family as a courtesan. The movie dramatizes her relationship with the politically prominent Marco, whose contractual marriage for wealth fuels Veronica's desire to become a courtesan (as her ex-courtesan mother, portrayed by the brilliant Jaqueline Bisset, tells her "you can still have him"). Veronica becomes the most desired courtesan in Venice, and amasses political power as well as wealth, becoming a published author and a "national treasure".
The most unbelievable part of this movie, which the editorial review scoffs at above, is actually fact. Veronica Franco was persecuted by the Holy Inquisition, but was able to free herself from imprisonment, torture and death with the help of her clientele, the most influential men of Venice.
Katherine McCormack gives a flawless performance as the intelligent and beautiful Veronica Franco. Her somewhat less than worthy lover Marco is played by Rufus Sewell, who also does a solid job.
This is a great movie--daring romance, a strong willed charismatic heroine, and certainly worth having in your dvd collection.
Fabulous!.......2007-07-20
One of my all time favorite movies. If you like historical fiction, this is a must!
Not what I expected.......2007-06-12
I orginally watched this movie on my computer through netflix and decided I loved the movie so much I needed to purchase it, which I did through Amazon. It took me several weeks to actually watch the movie as I would constantly browse by the movie, read what it was about and then move on. Finally I decided to watch the movie and was pleasantly surprised. What I watched was not what I expected to see. The movie not only caught my attention from the beginning but kept it through the end. I experienced several emotions while watching it and would recommend it to anyone and in fact have recommended it to several people already. This is the type of movie that even if you don't understand everything that is said, as there are several parts in which they speak slightly like Shakespear, you still understand the meaning/emotions which are being portrayed. Catherine McCormack definately out did herself in this movie.
Terrific.......2007-06-08
Don't let the title and DVD cover fool you into thinking it's a fluff film. It's a much better film than what's implied. Good acting and absorbing story.

When you get lost between the moon and New York City (ahem), chances are you'll find yourself taking another look at this hit comedy starring Oscar-nominated Dudley Moore as the charmingly witty, perpetually drunken millionaire Arthur Bach. Arthur falls in love with a waitress (Liza Minelli) who doesn't care about his money, but unfortunately Arthur's stern father wants him to marry a Waspy prima donna. The young lush turns to his wise and loyal butler (Oscar-winner John Gielgud) for assistance and advice. Arthur was a huge hit when released in 1981, as was its Oscar-winning theme song by Christopher Cross. Few remember that the movie was, sadly, the only one ever made by writer-director Steve Gordon, who died less than a year after the film's release. Consistently funny and heartwarming, Arthur was hailed as a tribute to the great romantic comedies of the 1930s. --Jeff Shannon

So, it's a corney story line........2007-08-23
Dudley Morre is so funny. John Gielgud's character is the BEST. Another one I can watch many times.
A wonderful classic.......2007-07-15
There was only one Dudley Moore and only Dudley Moore could bring so much life to Arthur. He's so charming that you immediately know him and come to love all of his profound idiosyncrasies. Dudley Moore,Liza Minnelli,John Gielgud all enter brilliant performances. This film comes to mind often and with the recollection just a fond reminder of how comedy should be written; to make you feel good!
Excellent!.......2007-04-11
Excellent price, speed of delivery, and quality. I am very happy with this purchase!
Dudley Moore "Arthur".......2007-03-28
Dudley Moore makes you just want to crawl up with a warm blanket, hot cocoa and think about what it would be like to have all this and then have it taken away. Great movie.
CLASSIC COMEDY IS STILL GREAT.......2007-03-25
I love this film! The cast's comic timing is so good, you'll be doubled over laughing! The DVD could use an upgrade though. As funny as this movie is, it is amazing how bad the sequel turned out! Lightning in a bottle the first time...I guess?

As a director, Wes Craven has been able to infuse his horror movies with humor and some smart, often genuinely creepy, thrills, even on his lowest-budgeted films. As a producer of horror movies, well, his record has been spotty at best. Craven tapped his longtime editor Patrick Lussier to direct Dracula 2000, and the movie ends up with all the good and bad of "a Wes Craven production." A modern-day update of the Dracula legend, the script has some genuinely good ideas. Christopher Plummer (The Insider) takes a relatively juicy role as Van Helsing, owner of an antiques shop specializing in ancient weapons. He takes exception to how his namesake was portrayed in Bram Stoker's classic novel, which he's more than happy to tell his assistant (Jonny Lee Miller, "Sick Boy" from Trainspotting) without telling him the whole story. When Omar Epps leads a band of high-tech criminals to break into Van Helsing's high security vault (thinking that with so much security there's got to be something extremely valuable in there), what they end up stealing is the body of Dracula, who of course awakens from his slumber. When the story shifts to New Orleans, where Van Helsing's estranged daughter is working for the local Virgin Megastore (here metaphor is replaced by product placement), Dracula is drawn to her. The undead start to multiply, and the vampire hunt resumes. Another excellent idea deals with a new origin to Dracula, flashing back to biblical times to explain his aversion to silver and crosses. But there is a downside. Under the inept direction of Lussier the movie is never scary, inspiring instead an occasional feeling of pity for the actors. Overall, this a vampire movie for the mind, not the heart. --Andy Spletzer
Description
The master of modern horror, Wes Craven, presents a riveting adaptation of the chilling classic featuring Jennifer Esposito (SUMMER OF SAM), Omar Epps (IN TOO DEEP), Jonny Lee Miller (TRAINSPOTTING), Vitamin C (GET OVER IT), and Jeri Ryan (STAR TREK: VOYAGER). When a team of techno-savvy thieves breaks into a high-security vault, they don't discover priceless artwork ... they find a crypt that hasn't been opened for 100 years! Suddenly, the ancient terror of Dracula is unleashed in the chaotic 21st century. Free to follow his pursuits of seduction and power, Dracula's first destination is America and the exotic city of New Orleans, a place where he feels right at home. Not far behind, however, is a young vampire hunter (Miller) from London, determined to save a young woman (Justine Waddell) with whom Dracula shares his dark legacy!

Luv Butler.......2007-08-13
Butler at his Sexiest best. I hit rewind so many times I almost had to buy a new remote!! A great new twist on an old favorite. I loved it.
It lacks bite............2007-07-14
Sorry for the bite part, but it's true, This film is predictable, gory, and has no point to it at all. When it comes to Dracula, American film makers don't get it.
I liked the origin of Dracula idea, but the plane...........2007-07-09
The origin of Dracula the vampire is given a very original take in this movie and is done very well. In fact, the origin of the vampire actually makes sense in this movie. Gerard Butler turns in a terrific performance as Dracula. I can actually see what the ladies see in him. Christopher Plummer starts out with the plum role then gets killed. I didn't like that. This is Dracula. Van Helsing doesn't get killed. He can get bit, beat up, burned or whatever, but killing off Van Helsing is a no-no. Justine Waddell is Van Helsing's daughter, Mary. She gives a good performance in a role that is mostly standing around looking bewildered, but she seems like a trooper. There is a lot of fighting and action in this film. There's enough blood I think to satisfy most people. Dracula is sexy enough for the ladies and the female vampires are plenty sexy enough for the guys. Vampire kisses were never more fun to watch. If there was one thing I would have changed in this film, it would have been the scene in the airplane. First, it was waaay too long if downright unnecesssary. Second, what was that guy thinking? You open up an ancient coffin to find live leeches. Do you know what a clue is? Anyway, I thought this was a pretty good movie with an original idea that was carried off well. Definately worth watching. Oh, one more thing. I don't know what happened, but they finished the movie by shamelessly leaving it open for a sequel with Mary Van Helsing
Sexy Vampires.......2007-07-08
This film sounds like just another b movie but it actually surprised me. This is not your typical Dracula film and I loved the twist at the end. Gerard Butler is sexy as hell and I never understood why his name is not mentioned on the cover of the DVD! I mean, he IS Dracula after all. check it out if you like vampire movies.
Great spin on Dracula.......2007-06-04
I have always have a love for Dracula and Dracula movies and I must say that this one had a great spin on the fabled Dracula. Gerard Butler as Dracula was amazing. He mesmerized with his eyes just as you would imagine Dracula doing. I thoroughly enjoyed this movie and seeing Gerard Butler, the rising star, in one of his earlier performances. Gerard Butler fans will love it.

Thr3e, a thriller that investigates a particularly savvy criminal mind, exceeds the average terrorist plot action-drama with psychological complexity. However, its psychotic twist lacks originality compared to films like Fight Club, which also attribute schizophrenia to the protagonist's cruel actions. When Kevin Parson's (Marc Blucas) writer's block for completing his theology PhD thesis paper about the nature of good and evil coincides with his receiving threatening phone calls from a local terrorist named The Riddle Killer, his closest childhood friend, Samantha Sheer (Laura Jordan), and a police officer, Jennifer Peters (Justine Waddell), jump in to help save him. But as Kevin's past childhood traumas are unearthed alongside evidence that The Riddle Killer couldn't possibly be involved with threats on Kevin's life, Samantha and Jennifer slowly begin to suspect that Kevin is actually committing crimes against himself. Though the film's moralistic Christian ending feels tacked on, Kevin's investigation into the human subtleties that blur lines between good and evil is portrayed intriguingly, manifesting as a film that mines common territory among criminals and the mentally ill. --Trinie Dalton
Description
From the highly acclaimed book by best-selling author Ted Dekker, this taut and electrifying thriller about a young seminary student targeted by an elusive and deadly madman delivers heart-pounding twists that'll keep you guessing up until the shocking final scene!
Customer Reviews:
Effective thriller.......2007-09-01
This movie is a rather effective thriller despite its lack of stars and big-budget. It creates a creepy atmosphere and is a hybrid of Saw and Se7en. The difference is that it creates chills without resorting to gratuitous nudity, language, or gore. It is a faith-based film but is definitely not a movie for the whole family. It will scare small children. It's a film about struggling with the demons within, how each of us has good and bad in us, and how God can help us deal with this dark struggle. Yes, it's a Christian film, but it doesn't beat the audience over its Christian themes and can be enjoyed by people of other faiths and non-believers. Most of the performances are good--particularly Marc Blucas as the hero battling The Riddle Killer, Laura Jordan as the hero's best friend/love interest, and Jennifer Waddell as a cop whose brother dies at the hand of the evil serial killer. The only performance that was disappointing was Priscilla Barnes as the hero's wacko, abusive aunt. She was too over the top and cartoony and seemed to wander in from another movie.
Menage a Trois.......2007-08-27
I came here to Amazon first to get some idea what Three was about. I didn't want the ending, just a gist, so I didn't read too carefully. However, I did read words like psychological thriller and Fight Club. And I knew what those meant.
Surprisingly, I pushed my prediction to the back of my mind and just tried to enjoy the film. It uses every thriller cliché in the book. Think of Saw mixed with Seven mixed with A Beautiful Mind--but not as good as any of them--and you have Three.
The story is kind of clever in that even with the predictable ending, it still manages to give you two genuine surprises. However, I'm not sure if the movie as a whole is still worth it. In fact, I think they actually cheat in order to pull off the ending.
The acting is mediocre. Actress Justine Waddell is not convincing as a cop, and the whole time I thought she was the actress Natasha Wagner (Natalie Wood's daughter/Robert Wagner's stepdaughter, who played in Urban Legend).
I have to disagree about the label of "Christian movie." The movie is not about Christianity or religion in general. Other than the fact that the main character is a seminary student, religion is not explored. It is very secularist in its execution.
What was that?.......2007-08-16
I didn't know anything about this movie, I just started watching it for something to do. Ummm.......was it supposed to be this bad, corny, poorly made, dumpy little pooper of a film? It seems some of you thought rather highly of the movie, as evidenced by the reviews. For the life of me, I can't tell why; I can only assume that you were fans of the novel. Was this a made for TV movie? Really, they didn't even have enough cash in the budget for real explosions? When the bus blows up you can see the flames are just superimposed, the same with every other explosion.
Now, being an avid reader, I've happened upon a Dekker book or two and I remember reading one about a small town where an evil guy comes and makes everybody wanton and violent and prone to sinning, and there's a school in the mountains and some of the students go crazy from eating worm-slime in an off-limits underground section of the campus. Of course, there's the requisite "good guys" who fight the against the "evil" overtaking most everyone else. The whole thing was just ridiculously over-the-top.
I would have rather seen these cheese-ball actors eating worm-slime. Seriously, that Belinda actress was made for worm-slime consumption. Boy, was that bottom-rung acting.
Okay, sorry, enough trashing the film. It did have an alright ending, I guess....if you like that sort of totally implausible, never-would-have-happened-in-a-million-years kind of ending.
Good, With Glitches.......2007-08-04
Thr3e is a rare movie. It has some amazing, little known actors. And despite a flimsy script, Saw-like villain and cheesy dialogue, the actors hold the movie together quite well. Thr3e is worth watching for the acting along. The movie will entertain you enough to satisfy, despite several moments that have you saying "no way."
What was this?.......2007-06-19
I had just finished reading the book which by the way is excellent. Then I heard that it was out in a movie and was pretty excited about that. I guess the best thing I can say is if you have read the book then at least the names are the same. Other than that this movie was really of no resemblance what so ever. It was full of bad acting and I just wasted an hour and a half of my life that I wish I could get back. I don't think the script writers even read the book and Ted Dekker should be ashamed of himself to let this have his name on it. DON'T BUY THIS MOVIE!!!!!

Like the previous three Inu-Yasha features, Fire on the Mystic Island (2004) pits the cast of Rumiko Takahashi's "feudal fairy tale" against new foes, unrelated to the tale of the Shikon Jewel. This time, it's the Four War Gods, powerful demons on the island of Houraijima, who preserve and augment their power by sacrificing half-demon children. Director Toshiya Shinohara uses lots of CG effects in the endless fights: explosions, lightning bolts, fire bombs, poisonous insects. But the visual glitz can't disguise that Fire on Mystic Island is the weakest of the features. The War Gods are standard-issue villains whose demise is a forgone conclusion. Inu-Yasha's half-brother Sesshomaru walks into the film, slays one of the War Gods, and walks out. Introducing a replica of Kikyo feels like a desperate attempt to introduce some emotion into a faltering plot. Kagome and Inu-Yasha once again combine forces to defeat the most powerful demon, but the film lacks the strong character relationships that give the series much of its charm. Inu-Yasha fans may want Fire on the Mystic Island to complete their collections, but they'll look in vain for the visual beauty of Affections Touching Across Time, the warmth of Castle Beyond the Looking Glass, and the passion of Swords of an Honorable Ruler. (Unrated, suitable for ages 13 and older: violence, grotesque imagery, brief nudity) --Charles Solomon
Description
Within the dark recesses of Horai Island, a group of half-demons lives under the demonic rule of the Four War Gods. Escaping with barely a shred of hope, Ai, the youngest of the half-demons, returns to the island with Inuyasha, who must face not only the Four War Gods, but the past he left behind on the island fifty years ago.

don't bother.......2007-06-30
if you like the first three and the show stop there it is not worth it rent it if you have to see it it is not worth the time and the money
One of the Best Movies of the Series.......2007-05-29
This is a great stand alone movie for those looking to get into a great anime and not spend a lot of money on the episodes when they are not sure they will like it or not. For those who are long time fans it brings everything you have come to love about inu yasha: action, romance, and comedy.
In this particular film you discover more details about Inu Yasha's and Kikyo's ambiguous past relationship. This info is not critical to the series but it gives you some interesting insight. I say imbiguous because all you really know about the two is that they met, fell in love, and were tricked into detroying one another. Here you get a bit more detail about their dynamics you wouldnt otherwise see in the show.
The majority of the movie takes place on the mysterious Horai island, home to half demons not unlike inu yasha. This island home is meant to protect these hanyou (half demons) from humans and full blooded demons such as sesshomaru (not that he would dirty himself with them anyways). Usually the island is hidden by a thick and dense fog, but every 50 years or so the islad reveals itself to the outside world. It is then the Inu Yasha and friends meet a young demon girl who somehow knows inu yashan and needs his help. Also a mysterous blazen scar appears in Inu Yasha's back! He has no choice then to travel to the island to help not only the young hanyou, but himself as well.
That's a rather short plot i know but the movie also includes a side story with Sesshomaru and Rin. Characters who do not make an appearance this time around include Naraku, Kohaku, Kagura, Kanna, and Koga. (maybe it's an "K" thing?). But all your other favorites are there. Just sit back watch and enjoy. If you truly enjoy inu yasha, then you will truly enjoy this film.
Standard stuff.......2007-05-06
The animation is amazing. But the plot is pretty standard, especially in the Inu Yasha universe. I have grown tired of the writers using Kikyo or Kagome or their image to threaten Inu Yasha and force him to relive his most traumatic moment. The fights drag on for too long. And the whole movie just seems like spectacular excuse to give the fans more action, but no character development. The weakness of the series is the same weakness of this movie.
It was pretty good.......2007-03-04
This one doesn't compare to the first 3 but its still good. This story dives into Inuyasha and his brothers past. Inuyasha was marked by a team of demons who sacrifice half demon children to increase their power. The level of comedy is pretty low and this one is set with a little more serious tone. The Demons are no pushovers. All the fights were very good, the only problem is after watching this, you cant help but notice how weak Inuyasha really is. And just how powerful his brother is. Maybe the story should be surronded by his brother a lot more. Anyway if you like Inuyasha then this is a must buy.
Not breaking new ground.......2007-03-02
Fire on the Mystic Island is like the filler episode of the movie series. It's fun, it's pretty, it's got some great fights and some good dialogue and character interaction, but you don't really learn anything about the characters or the world of the series that you didn't already know. While I was watching it, I didn't get the feeling at any point that I was watching a movie. It felt just like a really long episode of the anime. If all that is what you're looking for, then you're in luck. If not, you probably won't enjoy it as much as the other three movies.

No one does tragedies as well as Thomas Hardy, and this new BBC production of his 1891 novel is a peach. Tess is a teenager captured between happiness with an educated man (Oliver Milburn) and a dreadful existence with a scheming aristocrat (Jason Flemyng). Compared to Roman Polanski's 1980 Oscar-winning film Tess, the BBC version is far more interested in Hardy's text than in directorial exportations. Hence, the famous strawberry scene in which the aristocrat seduces the young Tess is just long enough to plumb the emotions; Polanski's version made the scene into a miniature classic of innocence and seduction. Both versions are worth seeing.
Star Justine Waddell gives Tess more pluck and less innocence than Natassja Kinski does. She makes Tess a character to root for, which can lead to your own tragedy when working through Hardy's tale. The film doesn't have the drop-dead gorgeousness of Polanski's version but is quite beautiful. Director Ian Sharp keeps in line with Hardy's affection for rural settings and vistas. Flemyng is such a great cad it leads one to wonder what he might have done with Billy Zane's role in Titanic. Another winning adaptation of a classic from the BBC. --Doug Thomas

Depressing period piece movie.......2007-08-25
Depressing, gloomy, meaningless, useless, soulless garbage. (Liberals and other wannabe intellects must adore this movie). There are enough problems to contend with in real life, so when I find the time to watch a movie I want to see puppy dogs, tulips, bunny rabbits, smooches & hugs, fun at the fair, and pony tails-- not arteeestic nonsense. I bought this movie based on the number of positive reviews I read. I had great difficulty making it to the ending, after which I wanted to throw the DVD out of the window, but instead gave it to my sister as a gift. If you enjoy watching wasted lives and the death of a young beautiful woman as an ending, this movie is for you. It's not that I can't handle such themes, but why bother when Lassie is waiting.
Waddell Gives an Oscar Worthy Performance as "Tess".......2007-08-02
Justine Waddell captures the soul of Tess Durbyfield, a young, naive, somewhat conflicted, and yet deeply loyal woman residing in the 19th century English countryside. This simple country girl, sent to claim kin with the rich D'Urbervilles, is badly used by her "cousin" Alec. Ashamed and stigmatized, Tess reconciles herself to a loveless life -- until she meets Angel Clare, who is intent on capturing this elusive, complex girl. Torn between her fear that she's unworthy and her love for Angel, Tess finally relents. But for Hardy's characters happiness is haunted, unsteady and tragically short-lived. After confessing her "sin" the night of their nuptials, Angel abandons poor Tess. Weighed down with the hope of his return, her loyalty and her plight, Tess struggles on. Waddell beautifully portrays Tess as she unravels emotionally and heeds the violent impulses of her ancient family -- the D'Urbervilles.
Hardy kills another romance novel.......2007-06-24
Well adapted, true to the story, but honestly: Of all the books out there, why would they film this? It's depressing, dismal, and desperate. There are NO heroes in this. I would compare it to Vanity Fair but at least in Vanity Fair there is a good guy to get a silly girl in the end.
This is what happens when men write romance novels. If you don't believe me watch his other "classic": The Major of Casterbridge.
1 star for Music
1 star for Acting and adaptation
0 for brilliant story
If you want to watch a good romance that has depth, makes you weepy, and that ends well, watch the BBC adaptation of Elizabeth Gaskell's North and South.
Beautifully done.......2007-06-09
My 17 year old granddaughter and I watched this lovely movie together. The acting was superb and the scenery gorgeous. Definitely a keeper.
Beautiful, Faithful Adaptation of Hardy's Masterpiece.......2007-03-10
I watched the movie yesterday, one week after I finished reading the book "Tess of the D'Urbervilles." I was blown away by the acting and the faithfulness of the movie to the book. Some minor scenes were cut, but only lines were added in, not scenes, and even then the added lines did not detract from the integrity of the story.
That said, the movie follows the story and events pretty much flawlessly, and I would say, presents the characters' personalities and feelings flawlessly as well. But that, or course, is mostly all because of the talent of the actors involved, especially the main three. Also, by the strength of the novel alone, you could tell that if the movie followed the book in both characterization and plot, it couldn't go wrong. And since the movie does just that, it's just right. You ache for Tess because of what she has to go through, yet you admire her because of her strength in the face of so many obstacles. Such a lovely, lovely movie. Tragic and so bittersweet.
