4 out of 5 stars It's pretty good.......2007-09-15

Yes, I think FOX is being stupid by releasing it in two parts, but don't blame Seth MacFarlene, NOT HIS FAULT! HE DOES NOT SET PRICES OR DECIDE HOW THEY ARE RELEASED ON DVD!!! But Season 5 is one of my favorite family guy seasons so I already pre-ordered it.

4 out of 5 stars Too expensive, not funny?.......2007-09-15

I always get a kick out of most of the negative feedback for really anything on amazon, and the user's inability to type properly. Just shows you some things are too deep for these people with IQ's smaller than their age.

Too expensive? I'm sorry, I know you blew your $40 on the last season of Smallville, or The most recent season of Flavor Of Love, but not wanting to pay for $26 for a show that ranks up with The Simpsons, South Park, Futurama, Harvey Birdman, Sealab, Space Ghost: Coast to Coast, The Brak Show, Robot Chicken, Morel Orel, Drawn Together... the list goes on.

I enjoy this show, although sometimes it does get drawn out or very predictable, but it's always funny. I have watched most of these episodes when they aired on tv, and I would love to watch the ones I missed. I'm especially pround of this DVD set because my birthday is on the same day. Family Guy and a birthday, does it get any better? Only if there are strippers! Yea.

3 out of 5 stars Dissapointed..but still a great show.......2007-09-15

Family guys is without a doubt a great show..my grandson loves this show and has for awhile now. He has all the volumes and we have this one pre-ordered. His one complaint is that it dosen't have the enitre Season which he dosen't get [hoping to receive the whole season after the split up of S4]. Season 4 was split into two volumes because the rest of the season hadn't been aired at the time of the release of Volume 3 [Season 4, Part 1]..but Season 5 has aired all the way and only contains 13 episodes [the total season is 18 episodes, so why didn't they include the rest of the 5?]. Without this complaint he still enjoys Family Guy and can't wait for its release of Volume 5.

5 out of 5 stars Always loved it, love it, and will always love it!.......2007-09-12

This show has always been great and this past season was most certainly no exception. Peter's prostate exam is classic, as well as, when Peter meets his real father. And according to the fox store:

Critics agree...of all the animated shows featuring a talking dog and a maniacal baby, Family Guy is certainly one of them!

"Join the Griffin clan for another 16 freakin' funny episodes that'll keep you laughing long after the series gets cancelled again. Witness panicky Peterâ(tm)s first prostate exam; see lovable Lois jump into bed with Bill Clinton; watch miserable Meg get a crappy job at the local superstore; hear crazy Chris sing in a goth band; follow boozing Brian all the way to Iraq and back; and get a rare glimpse of smitten Stewie as he hooks up with a very young old flame. Sweet!"

There are apparently 16 episodes rather than the 13 that people are saying there are. I hope this helps clear up some confusion.

4 out of 5 stars Stop Whining About The Price.......2007-09-10

Okay people, let's put our issues and tissues away and stop whining about the price of Vol. 5 and bitching because it's going to be split again, it was split in previous editions too, so stop acting surprised and whining about it, it's not going to convince the producers to put it all into one set, so stop it! They have to make money too. Secondly, if you're smart you will pre-order the set so you get 15% off and don't end up paying full retail. It was only $27.55 with shipping, I don't care who you are, if you can get a DVD set of a show as popular as Family Guy for under $30, you are doing good, the price isn't that bad! I have seen seasons of Thundercats and He-Man at a lot of stores for upwards of $50, and they are old news, so don't act like it's an absolutely ridiculous price. All I can say is if you are going to bitch about the price, then don't buy it. It's as simple as that. But if you want to save some money and still enjoy the laughs from the show, just pre-order it and save 15% or look elsewhere, you don't HAVE to buy it from one certain place.

5 out of 5 stars Ridley Scott is one of the greats........2007-09-08

This film and Ridley's ALIEN inspired countless other Sci-Fi films with their visionary look at a dark future for earth. These films inspired me to become a special-effects technician and I continue to to be inspired by them to this day. A former boss of mine at Warner Bros. Studios helped to make the cryogenic chamber that the "real" Tyrell was found to be frozen in. I heard that this scene was forever lost, but I hope that this version has that recovered footage. Most people don't know that this scene existed.

5 out of 5 stars vote for the narrated version.......2007-08-22

Obviously one cannot comment on what has not been seen but my vote goes to the narrated version. I did see this version when it was originally released this was the version that made this film important. Say what you will about harrison ford and others opinions on the film these are opinions and at a certain point even scotts opinions are irrelevant. Film has entered a new era where directors have become much like painters who refuse to let a painting leave the studio until all is perfect or all the strokes have been squashed under the pressure of what? THE directors cut.
I fell for this movie bigtime like falling in love and those of us who have fallen never think back fondly and say well it could have been better with just a little more unicorn. love is a Unicorn

5 out of 5 stars The best one yet!.......2007-08-22

It's maybe the best Sci fi film of all time, maybe number two behind Ridley's other masterpiece, Alien. This film depicts a dystopian Los Angeles in November 2019 in which genetically manufactured beings, physically identical to adult humans, called replicants are used for dangerous and degrading work in Earth's "off-world colonies." Replicants became illegal on Earth after a bloody mutiny. Specialist police units -- blade runners -- hunt down and "retire" (i.e. kill) escaped replicants on Earth. The plot primarily focuses on a particularly brutal and cunning group of replicants hiding in Los Angeles and a semi-retired blade runner, named Rick Deckard, who reluctantly agrees to take on one more assignment. This movie I believe helped to inpire many clone and cyborg type movies like A.I. The story is so ahead of it's time and one of those rare movies that is as good today as it was in 1982 and is almost more relivant. Well fleshed out characters, Roy Batty (Rutger Hauer) is a commando, Leon a soldier and manual laborer, Zhora (Joanna Cassidy) a sex worker retrained as an assassin, and Pris (Daryl Hannah) a "basic pleasure model." Bryant also explains that the Nexus-6 model has a four-year lifespan as a failsafe against their developing unstable emotions. Deckard is teamed up with Gaff (Edward James Olmos) and sent to the Tyrell Corporation to ensure that the Voight-Kampff test works on Nexus-6 models. While there, Deckard discovers that Tyrell's (Joe Turkel) young secretary Rachael (Sean Young) is an experimental replicant (who believes she is a human) with implanted memories from Tyrell's niece, which provide a cushion for her emotions. I'm a character guy and believe it is imposable to have a great film without many stong multi fasited characters with more that a few layers. Lastly like any great film it is very thought provoking and leaves a lot to the viewer imagination. Many critics and movie goes hated this film for that reason but for the rest of us the compelling question of weather or not Deckard is a replicant is just that thing that makes the movie great. Oh, just so you know...Of course he is, you silly goose!

This is one of those movies that holds up to almost anything made today. the directing, acting, effects, and characters are all spot on. The movie made Rutger Hauer a career as someone to be afraid of.

This edition could make most fanboys soil themselves, I did...twice. It's a great set. The best "special edition" yet.

4 out of 5 stars Where's info on Vangelis' magical score? .......2007-08-15

As HOT as I am to get my hands on the 5 disc package. I'm getting a little nervous about the gift that Vangelis gave to this incredible piece of art. Nothing given about a possible separate audio track for his music that he truly gave his heart and his soul to. Nothing listed in the documentaries/ alternate features of BR. Was he interviewed for it? Or was he ever interviewed about his luminous score over the 25 years since the films release? With the multitude of tracks available on dvd I'll be PISSED if the five different versions do not contain a single isolated Vangelis track. His score is equally as legend as the film itself.

I'm a fan of both BR and Vangelis. The fans of the Greek Gods' compositions over the years since BR have had an undying will of force to track down anything remotely related to his blissful score layered in rich atmosphere. Like those mysterious alternate soundtracks that used to be found on Ebay until a few years ago. The Gongo release is the second best one other than the 12 year delayed original version by Vangelis, which was released by Warner music.

Warner Bros. has been proudly proclaiming that they have all the rights issues handled to release this the way the filmmakers wanted it. Since they have the film and the score why haven't they included his participation in the upcoming notes? Maybe the fans STILL won't be able to enjoy All These Moments all in one place.

5 out of 5 stars OMG!.......2007-08-13

On December 19th 2007, one day after absorbing all five discs of this ultimate masterpiece...I can, and will, finally rest in peace! Bravo for making it happen guys!!!!!

When it arrived on the big screen in 1987, Paul Verhoeven's RoboCop was like a high-voltage jolt of electricity, blending satire, thrills, and abundant violence with such energized gusto that audiences couldn't help feeling stunned and amazed. The movie was a huge hit, and has since earned enduring cult status as one of the seminal science fiction films of the 1980s. Followed by two sequels, a TV series, and countless novels and comic books, this original RoboCop is still the best by far, largely due to the audacity and unbridled bloodlust of director Verhoeven. However, the reasons many enjoyed the film are also the reasons some will surely wish to avoid it. Critic Pauline Kael called the movie a dubious example of "gallows pulp," and there's no denying that its view of mankind is bleak, depraved, and graphically violent. In the Detroit of the near future, a policeman (Peter Weller) is brutally gunned down by drug-dealing thugs and left for dead, but he survives (half of him, at least) and is integrated with state-of-the-art technology to become a half-robotic cop of the future, designed to revolutionize law enforcement. As RoboCop holds tight to his last remaining shred of humanity, he relentlessly pursues the criminals who "killed" him. All the while, Verhoeven (from a script by Edward Neumeier and Michael Miner) injects this high-intensity tale with wickedly pointed humor and satire aimed at the men and media who cover a city out of control. --Jeff Shannon

Description

There's a new law enforcer in town and he's half man, half machine! From the director of Total Recall and Basic Instinct comes a "sci-fi fantasy with sleek, high-powered drive" (Time) about an indestructible high-tech policeman who dishes out justice at every turn! When a good cop (Peter Weller) gets blown away by some ruthless criminals, innovative scientists and doctors are able to piece him back together as an unstoppable crime-fighting cyborg called "Robocop." Impervious to bullets and bombs, and equipped with high-tech weaponry, Robocop quickly makes a name for himself by cleaning up the crime-ridden streets of violence-ravaged Detroit.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Region 4 "Definitive Edition" dont bother if you have the Special Edition.......2007-09-15

This version of Robocop on DVD for region 4 (Australia) is titled Robocop: Definitive Edition. So, if you do not have this version, there is not much point to reading this review.

I wont review the movie, I have already done that for another DVD release version.

What I do wan't to point out is that if you do have the previous Special Edition (region 4 release) then don't bother with this release of Robocop, as it only has about 3 or 4 things on it in the bonus features that where not included in the original release here.

This edition is great for those in region 1 (USA/Canada) because the bonus features where not included in the original Robocop DVD release, where as here in Australia we had the special edition that was filled with extras and the directors cut on the SAME SINGLE DISC!!!!

This version they have sliced the DVD in half and put it onto 2 discs, with one disc having the original theatrical movie, and the second showing the extended cut. So, if you have the original special edition that had both versions of the movie on the one disc, and are not obsessed enough with the film to want 5 minutes of bonus features you might not have seen before, then don't think you are missing out on anything, the special edition is the better of the two.

It is cheaper for MGM to make two discs then use a slightly more expensive disc and pack it all onto the one disc. So don't think a two disc edition sounds better and has more features, cause it does not have very much else on it at all. They are just a few interviews with the actors who played villains in the film and they talk about a few things that might interest you if you really want to know... other wise, like i said, keep the Special Edition.

1 out of 5 stars Bad Transfer.......2007-09-12

Washed out colors and an overall softness of the image had me scratching my head. Did previous editions look like this? And sure enough, the "Robocop Trilogy" boxset from a couple of years ago looks significantly better, even if there is a little edge enhancement visible in some scenes. Buyer beware.

5 out of 5 stars Another hit as featurettes drive this new release, A must for any true RoboFan.......2007-09-05

I've owned the Criterion edition of "Robocop" for years now so I bought this 20th anniversary DVD strictly for the featurettes. The Commentary with Director Paul Verhoeven, Writer Ed Neumeier and Executive Producer Jon Davison (A+) is still great and worth the price of admission right there. I would rank the best featurettes in this order (No spoilers): Villains Of Old Detroit Featurette(A+) , Special Effects: Then And Now Featurette(A), Robocop: Creating A Legend Featurette(A), (all three recent productions) Flesh And Steel: The Making Of Robocop Featurette(A), Shooting Robocop Featurette(B) & Making Robocop Featurette(B) (Older productions).
Since we've all seen the movie, I would recommend that if this movie is in your top ten all time, buy this 20th anniversary edition, those first three featurettes plus the commentary are worth the purchase price alone. I was disappointed by the deleted scenes. I had read about their content but they ended up adding nothing to the experience but no matter, still nice to see them.
If you are debating on purchasing the Robo-trilogy instead to save money, don't even considering buying the 20th anniversary edition. IMHO, the 20th anniversary edition is strictly for the Robo-connoisseurs, those who truly love and "get" the movie with all it's extreme violence, innuendoes and political satire. "I'd buy that for a dollar!"
The movie is the movie, we've all seen it. It's Verhoeven best work. The violence and intensity pull you in and pound you senselessly. The humanity and humor make it roller coaster ride with an ending that is as satisfying as it is unexpected. Easily one of the best Sci-Fi or action movies of all time.
Two versions here, the theatrical version and I believe the director's original "X-rated" version. I have to defer to others as to the exact cut of this version vs. what appears on the Criterion disk, no frame by frame analysis here.
Peter Weller does appear in some of the featurettes as well. If you are wondering what he's been up to outside of the entertainment industry, Weller holds a Masters Degree in Roman and Renaissance Art, and is an occasional lecturer at Syracuse University on the subject of Hollywood and the Roman Empire. Wow, how cool is that? "Good business is where you find it." Go Robo!

4 out of 5 stars Great.. but where is Peter Weller.......2007-08-30

I love this film. It's one of my favorites and I've bought it several times. I even own the criterion version of this film and I bought this one, hoping that it would finally be the proper ultimate edition and include commentary from Peter Weller. Weller has done great commentary tracks for other films of his, like "Naked Lunch" and "OF Unknown Origin" and Robocop needs a Weller commentary. The DVD gets only 4 stars for again missing the oportunity to make this the final word of the film.

4 out of 5 stars Murphy's Law.......2007-08-28

On the cusp of HD, RoboCop gets re-released in a 20th Anniversary Collector's Edition DVD that portends quick obsolescence but you shouldn't let that dissuade you from purchasing this standard def DVD to tide you over until the HD format war has ended. However, it appears that there is a "glitch" more severe than a malfunctioning ED-209 present on both US and Canadian versions of disc 2. The Canadian release has a duplication of disc 1 onto disc 2 and the US release has an authoring glitch that will not allow you to select the DTS, commentary or French language dub audio tracks, you can only play the Dolby 5.1 audio on the Extended Cut on disc 2. I can already hear the Old Man at MGM yelling "You call this a glitch!?" Hopefully MGM Home Video will rectify this and issue replacement discs for those of us who have already purchased the defective copies. If you own the legendary Criterion release featuring the "Extended Cut" you will be pleased to know that the upgrade is well worth getting, though you will probably want to hold on to your original Criterion disc for some of the extras that didn't make the migration over to the new 20th Anniversary disc.

Disc 1 features the original theatrical cut in anamorphic widescreen and Dolby 5.1 and DTS sound but the real treat on this disc is the excellent documentary "Flesh & Steel: The Making of RoboCop" featuring interviews with Paul Verhoeven, Jon Davison, Ed Neumeier, Basil Poledouris, and Peter Weller. There's also a couple of 8-minute 1987 featurettes: "Shooting RoboCop" featuring Miguel Ferrer in character as Bob Morton introducing RoboCop like an OCP publicity gimmick and "Making RoboCop" with a behind-the-scenes look at the production and interviews from back in the day. "The Boardroom" is a storyboard-to-film comparison of ED-209 accompanied with Phil Tippet commentary, 4 deleted scenes and the theatrical trailer with music from, appropriately enough, "The Terminator," another cyborg sci-fi smash from Orion Pictures.

Disc 2 features the "Extended Cut" in anamorphic widescreen and Dolby 5.1 sound. Unfortunately I cannot play the DTS mix on this disc because of an authoring "glitch" that does not allow you to select the other audio streams. I have tried this in numerous DVD players and interestingly enough when I play it on my computer it shows that the DTS stream is encoded on the second track and the commentary is on track 3 and the French dub on track 4 but you can only play the Dolby 5.1 mix on track 1. Has anybody else noticed this? Looks like I'll be giving MGM Home Video a call because I prefer the more graphically violent cut running a mere :23 seconds longer over the edited theatrical version but the 5.1 mix is still phenomenal compared to the stereo surround mix from the old Criterion release. The edited footage has been seamlessly restored back into the film. On the Criterion release you could see where the cuts were made and the old, unrestored footage had been inserted back in with changes in film density and unmixed sound. Why they couldn't just make this a seamless-branching feature on the same disc as the theatrical version and put all of the bonus features on the second disc is puzzling though. Disc 2 also features another outstanding featurette: "Villains of Old Detroit" with new interviews with Kurtwood Smith, Ronny Cox, Miguel Ferrer, and Ray Wise and is a terrific follow up after watching the film. "Special Effects: Then and Now" talks about the advances in digital compositing versus the in-camera matte shots and stop-motion animation employed on creating ED-209. "RoboCop: Creating a Legend" features interviews with Peter Weller, Paul Verhoeven, Rob Botin, et al. about designing and engineering the suit and took between 10-11 hours each day to fit Peter Weller into before shooting.

Unfortunately I ended up having to return this to the store I purchased it from. I told the department manager and we tested this on another disc in the store and it had the same issue with not being able to select the alternate audio tracks on the second disc. They subsequently pulled all of them from the new release shelf to send back because of it. Until MGM Home Video acknowledges this glitch and issues replacement discs, I am DVD-less. It probably will be corrected on the upcoming Blu-Ray disc though but too bad it won't be a hybrid disc. I'd buy that for a dollar.

Product Description

This fine western opens with Van Heflin as a rancher whose family is suffering from the devastatingeffects of a long drought. Heflin needs $200 to build a well, then learns he can obtain the money as a reward for delivering Glenn Ford, a notorious outlaw now in the hands of the law, to the state prison in Yuma, Arizona. Though this will put Heflin in great personal danger, the peaceful man accepts the assignment, knowing what the money will mean to his family. Heflin and Ford hole up in a small hotel in another town while waiting for the train to Yuma. The outlaw begins toying with Heflin's mind, talking in a friendly manner about Heflin's job and financial situation. Playing psychologicalgames, Ford tries to convince Heflin to take $100,000 to look the other way while he escapes. Heflin finds himself in a quandary, desperately needing the money yet being bound by his word to carry out the job. Ford's gang, led by Jaeckel, discovers where their leader is hidden and sets out to rescue him. The town officials abandon Heflin rather than put themselves in danger, leaving the troubled rancher alone to face off with the outlaws. Ford ends up assisting Heflin, helping his captor on the 3:10 to Yuma, explaining, 'I owed you that.' Heflin has come through the ordeal, body and integrityintact, and, as if in answer to this baptism by fire, the skies burst forth with rain, putting an end to the drought.

4 out of 5 stars 3:10 to Yuma (1957) Movie Review.......2007-09-10

3:10 to Yuma is an interesting blend of Western and Suspense, but more captivating still is its methodical examination of fleeting morals, blind justice, and the charismatic villain at the heart of the conflict.

Notorious outlaw Ben Wade (Glenn Ford) and his gang rob a stagecoach transporting significant funds of one Mr. Butterfield (Robert Emhardt) and end up killing the driver in the process. Farmer Dan Evans (Van Heflin) and his son are witness to the tragic events but are unable to help, save for notifying the authorities. When Dan returns home and his son explains the day's harrowing event, his wife appears disappointed by his apparent lack of courage, though his family's safety was foremost in his mind. When Dan is forced to go into town to borrow money for his farm's upkeep, he discovers that Ben Wade has stayed behind and the desperate farmer agrees to help apprehend the nefarious criminal. Upon Wade's capture, Butterfield employs Dan to guard the outlaw until 3:10 when the train to Yuma will arrive and take him to prison. But when Wade's gang arrives in town to free their leader, Dan will find that honor and dedication may only lead to an early grave.

While 3:10 to Yuma may appear to be an action film, it is actually an intricate examination of character, both hero and villain, set against a suspenseful game of cat-and-mouse in the old West. Van Heflin's protagonist represents the forces of good and parallels the difficulties present that don't always allow justice to prevail - at least not at first anyway. Honor and pride play an important role in Dan's decisions, as his wife's initial chagrin instigates his desire to bring Wade to justice. His belief in this subjective moral is so determinate that he even protects Wade from certain death just to attempt to deliver him to the law's judgement.

As unique and interestingly obstinate as Dan's demeanor is, the villain of the film actually overshadows him in charisma and stage presence. Glenn Ford's portrayal of outlaw Ben Wade is one of the finest character studies in cinema, as he approaches the role with a full palette of emotions and intentions, complete with a similar belief in honor and morals that deceptively shifts as the film progresses. The opening scene finds Wade nonchalantly killing one of his own men when held hostage, and such dispassionate violence would lead one to believe the vilest of villains stands before him. However, the narrative follows Wade just as much as Evans and we discover he stays behind in the town of Bisbee to woo the young bartender Emmy (Felicia Farr). His presence is so captivating in fact that not only does he get the girl, but she seems completely unfazed to learn that he is the notorious Ben Wade. When the outlaw is captured by Evans, their witty back-and-forth banter often reveals Wade to be the more entertaining of the two and most often it's hard not to root for the bad guy. The final confrontation with Wade's gang cements what we'd been expecting all along - the line between heroes and villains is a thin one, at least in this engaging battle of wits and integrity.

Though the plot is light on action, the story is heavy on suspense as Dan attempts to carry out his suicidal mission. Mind games replace gunplay and while the film's running time doesn't outstay its welcome, those expecting a nonstop shootout extravaganza may leave unsatisfied, while the film connoisseur will be delighted by the intricate character study. Reminiscent of deliberately paced suspenseful westerns like John Sturges' Bad Day at Black Rock and of course Fred Zinnemann's High Noon, 3:10 to Yuma deserves a place of its own in classic cinema for its daring antagonist and intent focus on the composition of heroism and the trials and tribulations it requires.

5 out of 5 stars 3:10 to Yuma - comparing the old with the new version - in progress.......2007-09-09

Maybe it's my own Wyoming roots clouding my judgment, but I absolutely love a GOOD Western, especially those having Southwest settings, especially Arizona and Old Mexico - having heard tales of them spun by my mother and father since childhood.

When the "new" version of "3:10 to Yuma" hit the previews, I suddenly realized I wanted to make the comparison since I often do that. To make it even more enticing, I had never seen the old version.

The heart of the story centers around a good man, desperate for money, who unwittingly becomes ensnared in the capture of an outlaw, and as part of his volunteering for the paid work, he must "take the prisoner to the 3:10 to Yuma". The interaction between the psyche two men makes for a remarkable tale . He knows only too well that his prisoner, even though shackled, is probably smarter than he is, and certainly more cunning, honed to a razor sharp edge by profession, and backed by a well-organized gang of scoundrels who are still on the loose.

I rate this most excellent older movie 5 stars, even with a few oddities and the highly improbable ending. (other than that, it had every possibility of having actually occurred somewhere back in time, which is one of the things I look for).

I'm amazed I hadn't seen it before. It has all the essential elements of an enduring Classic: a well written, well chosen and unique story line; great casting, and splendid direction, enhanced by a smoldering moment or two between male and female without the graphics deemed so necessary now. (not knocking "now", just making the statement that physical emotion can be transmitted very successfully without the graphics, which, in my view took much more thought process and showcased the talent of this director, who brought the story to life through the well chosen cast and his ability to bring out the best in each of them.

I highly recommend this movie and encourage anyone watching it for the first time to look for all the details that set this one apart from the crowd.

5 out of 5 stars A true classic deserving more repsect.......2007-09-08

This is truly an excellent film which deserves more respect, despite bad cover art. The trailer for the remake already made me shudder. If you are a fan of classic westerns, do yourself a favor and check this out. Glenn Ford is out of character but great as this wily villain. I believe the original story was written by a young Elmore Leonard. The bombastic Frankie Laine soundtrack tune is pretty good too. Do yourself a favor and see this even if you have already seen the remake. It will be very tough for Russel Crowe to outdo Ford (in my opinion).

5 out of 5 stars A great Western deserving more exposure!.......2007-08-14

Despite the lousy cover art, this is a fantastic western and I'm giving the film (not the DVD cover!) 5 stars. The character play between Van Heflin and Glen Ford is dynamic and I wouldn't count on any of that for the action-oriented remake.

1 out of 5 stars Wow, who did the cover art?.......2007-08-11

Wow, somebody please learn these graphic designers a little taste.

That's a modern Chinese steam locomotive plastered onto the cover.

Did they not watch the film to look for the type of imagery they should be using? Was this image just lying around in the Google-sphere waiting to be used? The damn photo has Chinese flags and writing on it! How did this get overlooked?

It's acne on the face of a classic. The film is ABOUT the "3:10" and they can't even get the imagery right! D'oh!

Peter Pan has a special place in the realm of classic animated Disney films: it instills an element of childlike wonder. The 1953 version of James M. Barrie's story is colorfully told and keeps on the straight and narrow of the book. Barrie's wondrous focus on child's play is the key to its longevity: kids who don't grow up, shadows that run away from their owners, pirates, a fairy, and the magic ability to fly. In short, you can't help wishing the adventure would happen to you. Fueled by a few memorable songs (the stunner being "You Can Fly") and the strong impression of the pixie fairy Tinkerbell and the goofy Captain Hook, Disney's version of this story neither supplants nor lessens the Broadway version with Mary Martin that was produced for television the same decade. Unlike some classics, Peter Pan never ages along the way. --Doug Thomas

5 out of 5 stars A Must Have.......2007-08-04

Did anyone denouncing the jealous rages of Tinker Bell, the petty antics of the mermaids or Peter's sometimes cruel spirit actually read the original book? No? I didn't think so.

What is left to say? This movie is a Disney classic and holds a special place in the hearts of many adults. However, the indirect racism and stereotypes may not be appropriate for todays audience and their parent's undue concerns with political correctness and empowering views of femininity.

The film is very dated, but no more than the other animated features from this time period. The film also doesn't accurately reflect the original novel, but none of Disney's Classics hold very true to their inspirations.

This film is a beautiful example of light hearted entertainment of a bygone era. The old Disney Classics are in a league all their own and modern children's movies just can't touch them.

If you are a parent concerned with the indirect racism and old fashioned views just look to the humor in today's children's films. Sexual innuendo, toilet humor, political stabs, many of which go over the heads of the little ones. What makes outdated stereotypes any worse than the derogatory humor used in today's CGI cinematography?

At least these older films are intelligent and encourage children to dream big and use their imaginations.

The Platinum Edition of Peter Pan is a must have for any Disney collection. As your children get older show them the other adaptations, such as the live action and encourage them to read the book. There's no reason not to challenge a child. That's what these Classics did, they opened doors to other means of enjoyment and enrichment for children. A lot of parents today really miss that point.

5 out of 5 stars Oldie but a goodie.......2007-07-30

This is a great adaptation of the story. It was a favorite of mine growing up, and it still enthralls the kids here at home.

Amazon.com Essential DVD

There is greatness in film that can be discussed, dissected, and talked about late into the night. Then there is genius that is right in front of our faces--we smile at the spell it puts us into and are refreshed, and nary a word needs to be spoken. This kind of entertainment is what they used to call "movie magic," and there is loads of it in this irresistible computer animation feature. Just a picture of these bright toys reawaken the kid in us. Filmmaker John Lasseter thinks of himself as a storyteller first and an animator second, much like another film innovator, Walt Disney.

The 10th anniversary edition of the landmark film repackages most of the extras found in the original Ultimate Toy Box set plus a few more. Two keen retrospectives are new, one with an assortment of talents including Roy Disney and Peter Jackson chiming in on the film's impact. The other is a roundtable with Lasseter and three of the creators simply talking about the experiences without--thankfully--any cutaways to noisy film clips. There's a load of other extras since the Ultimate Toy Box was one of the first and best DVD sets. Missing (besides the second film, which will be released separately) is the effects- and music-only tracks. Added is a whopping DTS soundtrack along with a remixed Dolby 5.1 track. The DVD has a higher transfer bit rate for a better picture, but only high-end enthusiasts will notice it. Since the film is a digital-to-digital transfer, both versions are eye-popping. A must-have set unless you have the Ultimate Toy Box.

Lasseter's story is universal and magical: what do toys do when they're not played with? Cowboy Woody (voiced by Tom Hanks), Andy's favorite bedroom toy, tries to calm the other toys (some original, some classic) during a wrenching time of year--the birthday party, when newer toys may replace them. Sure enough, Space Ranger Buzz Lightyear (Tim Allen) is the new toy that takes over the throne. Buzz has a crucial flaw, though--he believes he's the real Buzz Lightyear, not a toy. Lasseter further scores with perfect voice casting, including Don Rickles as Mr. Potato Head and Wallace Shawn as a meek dinosaur. The director-animator won a special Oscar for "the development and inspired application of techniques that have made possible the first feature-length computer-animated film." In other words, the movie is great. --Doug Thomas

1 out of 5 stars Get Toy Story 2 insted!!.......2007-09-16

This movie is not as good as made to be. It is boring and overrated. I bought this dvd at a local Blockbuster Video without even renting it i can't get into it. The first time i watched it after I played it I was depressed!! Of course i didn't want to hate this movie so I gave it one more chance. Even after 2 times I still can't get into it. I have Toy Story 2 on dvd and I enjoy that one more. Toy Story 2 is funnier and much better as a matter of fact, I will stick with that one along with my favorite movie Monsters, Inc. Toy Story 1 was week compared to Toy Story 2. Do yourself a favor and if your considering purchasing a Toy Story dvd, get Toy Story 2, don't waste your hard earned money on Toy Story 1.

3 out of 5 stars Its good but can scare .......2007-09-15

My eight year old loves this movie. My two, nearly three year old loves this movie up until the introduction of the bad child next doors house. From then on this film is not suitable for smaller children as it becaomes dark and scary (to them its scary). But the ending is great. So don't watch the scary bits and this is fabulous. But overall its a great movie for the family.

5 out of 5 stars The movie I loved before I even liked movies........2007-08-29

I remember 12 years ago when I first saw "Toy Story." As for "Pocahontas" being my first movie I saw in theaters and enjoyed it, I could enjoy "Toy Story" even more. "Toy Story" really got me into loving movies, and I even think that Buzz Lightyear is so cool, I like yelling out "To infinity and beyond" as a kid.

"Toy Story" is the first computer animated film of its own kind, and it's not just one great animated movie, it's an excellent movie to begin with. And after making "Toy Story" and people enjoying it, even animators, animators really want to make computer animated movies like that. Honestly, so would I.

"Toy Story" tells the story of the toys in Andy's room. Woody (Tom Hanks) has always been Andy's favorite toy. Until one day, Andy gets a really cool space ranger toy named Buzz Lightyear (Tim Allen) for his birthday. When Andy starts loving Buzz Lightyear even more than he loves Woody, the toys have a fight.

So one night, Andy decides to take Woody to Pizza Planet initally trying to take Buzz Lightyear. Eventually, the two come up and wind up getting lost. Unfortunately the next door neighbor, Sid, finds them and takes them home with them. Sid loves torturing toys for fun, and winds up torturing Woody and Buzz. So the two have to make a plan to escape the house.

The DVD comes with a variety of special features. Too bad that there's no animated short film "Tin Toy," which is the biggest problem of all. But hopefully, we'll see that animated short film in the Pixar Short Films Collection Volume 1 DVD where all the Pixar short films appear. But you get a nice home theater sound on this DVD.

However, the DVD comes with a video of "The Legacy of Toy Story," where animators and filmmakers talk about how they reacted when they first saw "Toy Story." I remember seeing Chris Wedge (director of "Ice Age" and "Robots"), George Lucas (director of "Star Wars"), Brad Bird (writer/director of "The Incredibles") and Peter Jackson (director of "The Lord of the Rings.") You can also see Leonard Maltin, Tom Hanks and Tim Allen as well talking about how much they loved the movie. You can also get "Filmmaker's Reflect" where the Pixar animators talk about what it's like making "Toy Story."

There's a game called "The Claw" where you can move the Claw around to pick up something and what can be sort of annoying is the aliens talking about respects to the claw, but I don't mind that. I also enjoyed seeing a sneak peek for "Cars" on the thing, and when I first bought this DVD when it was released, I was very happy with not only just the movie, but the special features as well, and enjoying seeing a sneek preview for "Cars," which I have now a passion for.

The animation is excellent. "Toy Story" brought in one of the first techniques of filmmaking, which is computer animation, and that's the film's strength for the movie. And that's also what Pixar's strength is in making the movie.

Overall, "Toy Story" is an excellent movie and an excellent DVD. If you love this movie, I recommend you buying this DVD.

who wouldn't love toy story? My children 4yo, 2yo, and 9mo loves this movie (even I love it). When I play this movie they sit and watch it like it's the first time they've seen it. My 4yo and 2yo loves to pretend play so they mimic the characters in this movie. Although there were certain words that were used in this movie that I do not approve of like: idiot, stupid, shut up. Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars This is a solid mature effort..........2007-09-12

I wasn't sure what to expect. I know about Dr. Strange, but I was never "into" Dr Strange. I felt the movie was well paced, well written, and well performed.

I feel that these sort of comic based movie stories are all too formulaic, and Dr. Strange was; however, it was still plenty entertaining. I think it could have use a bit more intensity in it's action, and charactor interactions; it's a subdued movie much of the time. I expected more of an ending as well, but again this was solid.

I don't think this was on par with Ultimate Avengers, my favorite newer Marvel DTV so far. I feel this was more like Invincible Iron Man. So if you like Iron Man, you will probably like Dr. Strange. In my opinion.

3 out of 5 stars Dr. Strange... a strange choice?.......2007-09-11

Like Iron Man, I thought this was done really well. The animation and back story along with the acting was very good. I just question Marvels choice of doing a Dr. Strange animated movie. I am not complaing, I like that they didn't go with the standard X-Men or other really popular characters but it seems like a 'Strange' choice. But Marvel also did a made for TV movie back in the late 70's early 80's of Strange too. So they might be trying to get an old favorite character over with some new fans.

Its a good movie and a good story. I recommend it.

5 out of 5 stars Dr. Strange Movie.......2007-09-06

Marvel does it again! This movie pays tribute to the character by going more in-depth into the characters personal life, which reflected on the choices he made. It touches on how tragedy can emotional blind a person from seeing what is really inside. It also shows how people can put up walls believing they are protected themselves, but in truth can be holding themselves back from something greater. Well done.

4 out of 5 stars Another more than solid Marvel animated treat.......2007-09-05

Doctor Strange, the fourth Marvel animated feature distributed by Lion's Gate, is a pure treat. Re-telling the origin of Marvel's sorcerer supreme, Doctor Strange follows the wealthy and full of himself doctor and surgeon Stephen Strange, as he bears witness to a supernatural event before an accident robs him of his greatest tools: his hands. Soon enough, Strange learns he has a destiny, which leads him to Tibet and coming under the teachings of the Ancient One, who foretells of a powerful and ancient evil callded Dorramu, which is preparing to rear it's ugly head. Though there are a few more modern twists (a car accident robs Strange of the use of his hands here, his faithful assistant Wong is much less ethnic), this animated origin story is plenty entertaining. The animation and voice acting are top notch, and the Doctor Strange mythology of the classic Marvel comics is put to good use as well. Though like the other Marvel animated features, Doctor Strange is an acquired taste, but for those who have so far enjoyed the Ultimate Avengers and Iron Man DVD's, Doctor Strange is more than well worth a visit.

4 out of 5 stars Strangely refreshing.......2007-09-03

Admittedly I'm not a long-time follower of Dr Strange, and I nod with respect to those who can comment more authoritatively about the accuracy of the adaptation. Nonetheless, I am pleased and impressed with the talent and creativity that goes into these Marvel Ani-movies. The comics corporations just do tooo much foot-dragging in adapting their properties to the big or small screen, denying fans the fun and excitement of seeing their favorites spring off the comic page. I've enjoyed the Avengers 1 & 2, and Iron Man, and really wonder what's going to happen with the upcoming future Avengers tale. It's just fun seeing these characters being treated in a polished and respectful manner, and I really wish DC comics would get on the animated movie bandwagon. One thing I don't get is why they don't get these a short run in theaters before going to DVD. Glen Larson did this with the pilot for the original Battlestar Galactica, and cheesy though it was (by today's standards especially), it was still great to see it on the "big screen." Marvel, you listening?

Product Description

From producer Jerry Bruckheimer (PEARL HARBOR) comes PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN: THE CURSE OF THE BLACK PEARL, the thrilling high-seas adventure with a mysterious twist. The roguish yet charming Captain Jack Sparrow's (Academy Award(R) Nominee Johnny Depp) idyllic pirate life capsizes after his nemesis, the wily Captain Barbossa (Geoffrey Rush), steals his ship, the Black Pearl, and later attacks the town of Port Royal, kidnapping the governor's beautiful daughter Elizabeth (Keira Knightley). In a gallant attempt to rescue her and recapture the Black Pearl, Elizabeth's childhood friend Will Turner (Orlando Bloom) joins forces with Jack. What Will doesn't know is that a cursed treasure has doomed Barbossa and his crew to live forever as the undead. Rich in suspense-filled adventure, sword-clashing action, mystery, humor, unforgettable characters, and never-before-seen special effects, PIRATES is a must-have epic on the grandest scale ever.

You won't need a bottle of rum to enjoy Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl, especially if you've experienced the Disneyland theme-park ride that inspired it. There's a galleon's worth of fun in watching Johnny Depp's androgynous performance as Captain Jack Sparrow, a roguish pirate who could pass for the illegitimate spawn of rockers Keith Richards and Chrissie Hynde. Depp gets all the good lines and steals the show, recruiting Orlando Bloom (a blacksmith and expert swordsman) and Keira Knightley (a lovely governor's daughter) on an adventurous quest to recapture the notorious Black Pearl, a ghost ship commandeered by Jack's nemesis Capt. Barbossa (Geoffrey Rush), a mutineer desperate to reverse the curse that left him and his (literally) skeleton crew in a state of eternal, undead damnation. Director Gore Verbinski (The Ring) repeats the redundant mayhem that marred his debut film Mouse Hunt, but with the writers of Shrek he's made Pirates into a special-effects thrill-ride that plays like a Halloween party on the open seas. Aye, matey, we've come a long way since Jason and the Argonauts! --Jeff Shannon

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars GREAT.......2007-09-16

This is the #1 movie of the centry. Jack Sparrow, Will Turner, Elizabeth, and every one else are very beleivable characters that you can hitch your emotional wagons to. YO HO A PIRATE'S LIFE FOR ME!!!!!

5 out of 5 stars Swashbuckling is back........2007-09-15

I didn't expect much from a movie that was made after an amusement park ride, but I must say I was more than pleasantly surprised. This is one of my favorite movies. It has everything. A great cast, a great story, great action, and wonderful visuals. You'll believe you are back in time and living with cutthroats. But wait there's more, you also have a supernatural element that makes this like Lord of the Rings meets Black Beard the pirate.
The whole idea seems rediculous, but with Johnny Depp as CAPTIAN Jack Sparrow, he makes it all work. Too be fare Orlando Bloom as Will Turner is the actual hero of the story, but without a doubt Depp is the star. The movie would not work without him at such a great level.
Then there is Keira Knightley as Elizabeth Swann, who is as lovely as she is adventrous. Knightley really is a great actress and her character is essential to the story so she isn't just another pretty girl in an action movie, though undoubtedly she is absolutely beautiful.
I won't go into the story since others here have already, but I will say that if you love pirate movies or action movies or comedies or romance or horror movies, this movie has it all and it's all top notch. This is a must see and one of the best in the decade it was made.

4 out of 5 stars A nice popcorn film.......2007-09-08

The first of the three Pirates movie was a nice summer popcorn film, which recalled not only the Pirates movies of classic Hollywood but also those great George Pal and Ray Harryhausen stop-motion monster epics of a later time. It wasn't until the second movie, when suddenly the filmmakers decided audiences had been taking Pirates seriously, did the story begin to get bogged down in complicated mythologies and convoluted sci-fi goofiness.

4 out of 5 stars sounded like a bad idea.......2007-09-04

This movie was a nice surprise; any movie based on a Disney World ride is automatically suspect, but this one transcends its bizarre inspiration and ends up being a fun action movie, largely due to the strength of the performances of Depp and Rush. Unfortunately, the other actors in the movie are rather bland compared to those two and the movie feels kind of flat when they are not onscreen.

Ivan Rorick

2 out of 5 stars Depp's big payday.......2007-09-04

I really enjoyed Johnny Depp's mid-1990s work, particularly "Ed Wood," "Dead Man" and "Donnie Brasco." Much has been made of his "Keith Richards meets Pepe Le Peu"-inspired riff in the "Pirates of the Caribbean" films, but the truth is that Depp is clearly slumming here (perhaps deservedly so after two decades of assiduously avoiding the big payday-style blockbuster).

A lot of other good talent is going to waste at the service of these amusement-park ride driven plots, particularly Oscar-winner Geoffrey Rush, Orlando Bloom, and Keira Knightley (who, if she loses more weight, runs the risk of being mistaken for one of the skeletons on Rush's ghost ship).

Intermittently entertaining but ultimately unsatisfying.

Okay, let's get one thing straight right off the bat: Family Guy is not, never has been, and never will be, The Simpsons. Nor is it South Park, King of the Hill, or any one of a number of other shows on Adult Swim. But yes, it is in many ways a rip-off of those other shows (especially The Simpsons; let's not even pretend otherwise). But so what? By now, you either think the show's funny, or you don't, and the derivativeness either bothers you, or it doesn't. Volume 4 is likely to just cement your feelings one way or the other, because this collection features some of the funniest, and the most offensive material yet. It's also the most cohesive. The show has always been incredibly erratic, turning on a dime to fit in all those jokes from out of the blue that start with Peter saying "Boy, this is worse than that time when..." But by now, the writers and series creator/executive producer Seth MacFarlane have figured out how to more seamlessly integrate them into the show, and that's just what it needed to really come together. In fact, the extra attention being paid to the show recently in the form of swipes from The Simpsons and especially South Park (which dedicated an entire episode to trying to kill off Family Guy) is evidence that this is probably the peak for the series. This volume is 14 episodes, and stand-outs include "The Courtship of Stewie's Father," which gives more face time to creepy old man Herbert (brilliantly voiced by Mike Henry), and "The Father, the Son, and the Holy Fonz," in which Peter starts his own church dedicated to Fonzie from Happy Days. Of course, there is still the lingering question of who the real star of Family Guy is: Peter or Stewie? The little football-head gets his moments to shine in "Sibling Rivalry," in which he battles with half-brother Bertram, and... well, pretty much every other episode, as he continues to get many of the memorable lines. Along with the extra features, over 40 deleted scenes, extensive commentaries, and featurettes, you true fans will get more than your share of laughs from this collection, which is what you watch the show for in the first place. --Daniel Vancini

Description

Revenge rarely gets sweeter than it does in The Count of Monte Cristo, a rousing, impeccably crafted adaptation of Alexandre Dumas père's literary classic. Filmed countless times before, the story is revitalized by director Kevin Reynolds (rallying after Waterworld) and screenwriter Jay Wolpert, who wisely avoid the action-movie anachronisms that plagued 2001's dubious Dumas-inspired The Musketeer. Leading a superior cast, Jim Caviezel (Frequency) expresses a delicate balance of obsession and nobility as Dantes, the wrongly accused Frenchman who endures 13 years of prison and torment, then uses a hidden treasure to finance elaborate vengeance on those who wronged him. Memento's Guy Pearce is equally effective as Dantes's betraying nemesis, and Richard Harris tops his Harry Potter wizardry with a humorous turn as Dantes's fellow prisoner and mentor. Filmed on stunning locations in Ireland and Malta, The Count of Monte Cristo easily matches Rob Roy for intelligent swashbuckling entertainment. --Jeff Shannon

Description

Jim Caviezel (HIGH CRIMES) and Guy Pearce (THE TIME MACHINE) give sizzling performances in THE COUNT OF MONTE CRISTO -- the greatest tale of betrayal, adventure, and revenge the world has ever known. When the dashing and guileless Edmond Dantes (Caviezel) is betrayed by his best friend (Pearce) and wrongly imprisoned, he becomes consumed by thoughts of vengeance. After a miraculous escape, he transforms himself into the mysterious and wealthy Count of Monte Cristo, insinuates himself into the French nobility, and puts his cunning plan of revenge in action. This swashbuckling thriller will have you sitting on the edge of your seat until the last ounce of revenge is exacted.
