The beautifully sculpted face of Johnny Depp fits right in with this masterpiece of design. The Libertine--filmed in a grainy, color-muted chiaroscuro--captures the lush costumes, extravagant decor, and remarkable filth of Restoration England. John Wilmot, the Earl of Rochester (Depp, Pirates of the Caribbean, Ed Wood), warns the audience at the very beginning of the film that they will not like him. From there, he treats his wife cruelly, drinks to relentless excess, abuses his friendships, and generally wallows in dissipation, much to the dismay of King Charles II (John Malkovich, Dangerous Liaisons), who hopes that Rochester will write a play glorifying his reign. But Rochester finds his true inspiration (and the movie comes to life) when he sees a young actress named Lizzie Barry (Samantha Morton, Minority Report, Morvern Callar). Rochester sets out to make her the greatest actress of their time--and she, with some reluctance, submits to his teaching. The weakness of The Libertine is not that Rochester is unlikable; it's that he doesn't want to do anything. Barry galvanizes the movie because she burns with ambition, but Rochester's only apparent aim in life is an agonizingly slow self-destruction. Still, The Libertine has lurid Saturnalian visions, Morton is superb, Malkovich gives a typically insidious turn, and Depp, as always, finds moments of sad poetry in the bitterest of speeches. --Bret Fetzer
Description
Oscar® nominee* Johnny Depp delivers "a tour de force performance" (Baz Bamigboye, The Daily Mail) in the "seductively entertaining" (Jan Stuart, Newsday) The Libertine. As the celebrated writer and bad boy John Wilmot, second Earl of Rochester, Depp brings to life a decadent 17th century London. There, Wilmot falls passionately in love with his aspiring actress muse (Oscar® nominee Samantha Morton**), but is cast from the heights of privileged society when he scandalizes King Charles II (Oscar® nominee John Malkovich***) with a shockingly audacious play. At the depths of ruin, the rebel seeks redemption on his own terms. "Johnny Depp is brilliant," raves Cosmopolitan, while Peter Travers of Rolling Stone calls The Libertine a "one-of-a-kind spellbinder."
Customer Reviews:
Liberate Me From Ever Seeing "The Libertine" Again.......2007-09-13
Honestly, I gave up watching this after the first 30 minutes because it didn't spark my interest. Malkovich's affected speech is always a turn-off in a film and Depp's arch overacting and insider winking is self-indulgent. Let me watch a beautifully executed BBC Masterpiece Theater production any day. Those films are about the story, period, costumes, characters, not the prancing performers.
Unless you are a devoted Depp/Malkovich fanatic and must see every thing they have ever done -- my suggestion -- skip it. Do not watch this unless you wish to hear vile and disgusting language come out of Depp's mouth and "innocent" face. There are few double entendres -- he says filthy words right out loud.
I had a professor when I studied theater, John Newman, who suggested that you know when you are seeing something worthwhile when you forget the discomfort of your seat and everything around you and you are riveted by what you are seeing and experiencing. What I have written is my seat of the pants review of "The Libertine."
Didn't like it.......2007-09-04
But I'm not envious, so I guess I'm stupid --- and will get to like it in 5 years time. However, I doubt both. Not liking it doesn't mean I wasn't impressed, and it was interesting to be given some insight into the miserable life of John Wilmot, whose writings and other doings had not attracted me greatly in the past. A person somewhat resembling the divine Marquis de Sade, the pair of them strike me as self-haters and life-haters. Although I see their point, there's no percentage to it: since we're here, we might as well make the best of it and try to be pleasant to each other, as well as ourselves. Life's a jest and all things show it, so let's have a laugh now and then. What this film demonstrated is that there was precious little humour or good-nature in the debauched and dissolute life-style surrounding Charles II: it was basically depressing and vacuous. Was that what Rochester was protesting against? Or was he merely lashing back at his prim and proper mum? The Cavaliers had been wrong, but wromantic; and the Puritans had been right, but repulsive. The Restoration, however, is shown here as both unromantic, because it totally lacked any sense of honour, and also poxily repulsive. Yes, the film was creatively shot, rather well-acted, and the script makes you think. The Director's commentary well communicates the thought behind the product. I can't give it less than 4 stars, but I still didn't like it. Also, I deeply doubt that Charles II and his cronies, whatever else they may have done, used the f word every other sentence.
One of the finest Johnny Depp's performances.......2007-08-23
Who could resist the movie with cast consisting of: Johnny Depp, Samantha Morton and John Malkovich? These actors exhude style, beauty and charisma. This is a piece of beautifully crafted dialogue -- definitely not movie for the masses. It mixes wit, philosophy and charm all at once. It's tortured main protagonist John Wilmot, second Earl of Rochester (played by Johnny Depp) is mesmerizing. One of those characters that one loves to hate. Depp's physical transformation is fantastic too. How is it that Nicole Kidman gets an Oscar for her nose and he does not get one for his? Wonderful, wonderful film - if you like smart movies - this is the one for you.
For open eyes and open hearts only................2007-08-06
I just watched The Libertine on Direct TV last night and have logged on to buy myself a copy. Suble, complex and nuanced in script, direction and performance. At the beginning our main character played by Depp says we will not like him in the opening monologue, and that as we watch, we shall like him less.
At the end perhaps that is so, but for me at least, liking him became irrelevant. Instead, I was left with respect -- for a life imperfectly led in the extreme yet still punctuated throughout with more than a few flashes of brilliance, for the struggle to live with integrity and authenticity as the real impulse behind so much of the debauch, and for the self-declared moment of redemption near the end, a highly personal redemption that can only be bequeathed by oneself upon oneself and never by another, all underscoring the link between Libertine and Liberty, both words rooted etymologically in the Latin "libertus" = "free".
The film left me deeply, deeply moved, and I highly recommend it.

THE INFAMOUS EROTIC SAGA AN ASHAMED STAR TRIED TO STOP!
Famed French TV game show hostess Sophie Favier - in one of her earliest and most revealing roles - stars in this boldly sexy epic about a cross-dressing teenage orphan named 'Frank' (Jennifer Inch of SCREWBALLS) who is adopted by a handsome nobleman (Christopher Pearson) with his own strange urges. But when the sultry virgin's gender-bend is revealed, her deflowering unleashes a shocking torrent of voyeurism, violation, sadism and submission that will blur the line between pleasure and pain forever!
Also know as FRANK AND I, this 1984 Playboy production ignited an international controversy when Sophie Favier unsuccessfully sued to stop its long awaited re-release. Her court loss is a victory for Skinemax fans everywhere, as LADY LIBERTINE can now be presented uncut and uncensored for the first time on DVD in America!

pathetic porn.......2006-11-30
A brainless T&A flick that demeans women. See-through plot devoid of motivation.
Beautiful Romantica.......2006-11-17
The novel on which this movie is based is widely regarded as a classic of Victorian erotica, which mostly seems to be focused on whipping, with other activities as a sideline rather than the main course.
This movie, on the other hand, qualifies as the modern term "romantica" - romantic erotica. Jennifer Inch shines as "Frank." New to the world and shy, we get to watch this young lady as she discovers the joys and sorrows of being a woman and finally arriving at love with a man who cherishes her. Jennifer is charming and beautiful, making every scene she's in a delight.
This is a "couples movie" without a doubt. The ladies will appreciate the growing regard "Frank" and Charles develop for each other, and their menfolk will enjoy the "skinemax." I'm absolutely thrilled this one is finally out on a superb quality transfer to DVD.

Kira plays the title character, who tends to the needs of some attractive people who are coming over for a will reading, and while waiting for it, end up doing the things you'll expect in a soft-core porn film. However, they're being watched in the bedroom by someone via a camera. Of course, Kira Reed is in fine form as usual, looking voluptuous in her maid outfit. She gives an excellent performance with great nude and lesbian scenes, and the film includes some bondage and fetish attire while still being a lot of fun. ***Great Nude Scenes with Amy Lindsay, Gladys Jimenez, Anneliza Scott
Customer Reviews:
Greatest Softcore Film Ever..........2007-09-08
Kira Reeds best film by far.
Normally these are the kinds of film one has to suffer through on cable for some decent nudity. This film is not only watchable, it's actually good. Amy Lindsay is also exceptionally hot in a mild S&M fetish scene. But nothing compares to Kira Reed running around in her French maid outfit.
Production values are incredibly high for this sort of film, even has a decent soundtrack. And a storyline that is probably as good as it gets for this genre.

two thumbs up
Attempted translation of description.......2005-01-02
I cannot rate this film because I haven't seen it. I wish to neither recommend nor condemn it. So I give it 3 stars as a means of remaining neutral.
The purpose here is to offer a possible translation of the French description of the film. Since I have not seen it, I must interpret here and there, fill in a blank or two (some things are grammatically or contextually inferred) and offer alternative meanings. Hopefully, this will give you a general idea of what this film contains.
"A crazy day [in the life] of a (male) libertine summoned by a
thousand pleasures, attracted [lured?] by several women... Diderot, in the hands of an adventuress, is subjected to the excessive gastronomic desires of a baroness. (He) struggles against the censure of an execrable red cardinal and attempts to control the (sexual) assaults of his wife, his daughter, a nymphomaniac lady knight, and a young girl who wants to lose her virginity before evening. A torrid and excentric day, a moment of flesh, silk and wit, where philosophy plays teasingly with eroticism."
Perhaps a professional translator can do better. But that's basically it.

Film d' epoque........2002-11-15
A good cast and an interesting script have good possibilities to have as result a good film. You have to watch this film concidering that is a film of the 60s. Is not bad but we have seen J.L. Tredigniand in better films. The unrated version is supposed to be uncut...he , he, ..i don't think so!The version i have seen some 25 years ago in my neighbourhood's cinema was somehow more daring..
Entertaining , sexy 60's film.......2002-05-07
This is a surprisingly entertaining movie. It is almost quaint.
Catherine Spaak, one of the most beautiful actresses of the 1960's is at her most beautiful as a widow who discovers her late husnband had an apartment that he used for kinky sexual escapades. She then decides to use that apartment for similar purposes and to live a more carefree sexual lifestyle.
Movie is full of typical 1960's touches, from the art direction to the music. This is not, though, an explicit sex movie or even one of those late night Cinemax flicks. This is a fine, sexy, very entertaining movie.
The VHS version of this movie was missing several minutes of the more naughty scenes. Luckily they have been restored for the DVD version. The print quality of those scenes is not up to par, but it is still nice to see a complete version. The DVD also features some "Deleted Scenes" and some amazing 1960's trailers from the Audubon Collection. They are truly fun to watch.
BEAUTIFUL LADY.......2002-05-03
THE STAR OF THIS MOVIE IS ABSOLUTELY BEAUTIFUL AND IF I FIND ANY MORE MOVIES WITH HER IN THEM, I WILL SURELY BUY THEM!!
Dissappointing.......2000-02-29
I saw this movie when it first came out in 1969. I had fond memories of a movie that was sexually interesting and funny. However the video is of poor quality for the price. Also, the editing seems to have cut out substantial parts of the original. I would not recommend this video for purchase.
Little appreciated at time, wears well with age........1999-01-16
A comedy with the theme that everyone is entitled to their own perversions, so long as "no one scares the horses." Trintignant plays a mildly befuddled medical school professor, and Spaak is a youthful and appealing widow who learns more and more about the secret life her recently deceased husband led on the side. She is not outraged by his perversions, only hurt that he did not think she would join in them. And, she sets out to discover what he found so exciting about them. Compare this comedic approach to sex with the dour, serious Swedish "I Am Curious Yellow" of the same period.

Gabriel Aghion directs this bawdy period romp about a day in the life of 18th century philosopher and sensualist Denis Diderot (Vincent Perez), who produced the first ever encyclopedia while living a life of delicious decadence. Though the Church immediately banned Diderot's opus, which they deemed to be a compendium of forbidden knowledge, copies continued to circulate. Diderot, along with his wife (Francoise Lepine) and daughter, are staying in the country estate of the Baron and Baroness d'Holbach -- who put a pair of illegal printing presses and a legion of typesetters in a chamber beneath the family altar. At the same time that the Church sends a grumpy Cardinal (Michel Serrault) to ferret out the clandestine press, comely Madame Therbouche (Fanny Ardant) shows up to paint Diderot's portrait. While Diderot occupies himself with his artist friend, the Baroness keeps the Cardinal occupied with her laundry list of sordid confessions. Naughty fun soon ensues.
