3 out of 5 stars Thought it would be better.......2007-08-14

This cult classic film really didn't impress me much. It is basically a trashy revenge movie. What sets it apart from stuff like "I Spit on Your Grave", is the quality of actors and a decent director. There are a lot of faces you will recognize. The movie basically has very little set up to get to know the characters before you get into a long rape scene. Then it becomes a short court room drama and then moves on to the revenge part. If you like pictures like that, then this one is probably one of the better made girl revenge pictures, but as a movie it is left wanting in many places. For fans only.

1 out of 5 stars Make yourself a favor, resist any temptation to watch it!.......2006-06-14

A thrashed portrait about a model who is molested by a composer. I can still remember it as one of the worst films I have watched in my life. Terrible edition, predictable script and infamous performances. This was the worst film in which Anne Bancroft appeared ever.

Do not waste your time watching it as I did it; one of my youth's sins.

4 out of 5 stars A GLOSSLY TREAT.......2006-01-20

The late Margaux Hemingway saw her movie career take a nosedive after the release of this film, while her co-star and little sister Mariel became the toast of the town. But to many cinephiles, she'll always be remembered as the woman in red holding one mean rifle. Margaux plays Chris McCormick, a top fashion model (no stretch at all, here, since she really was a top model at the time) who ends up regretting her decision of having innocently invited her sibling's music teacher (Chris Sarandon of "Fright Night" fame) to her apartment. While she cries rape (with the help of Academy award winner Anne Bancroft as her attorney) the judicial system, however, sees it differently. LIPSTICK is the ultimate B-movie extravaganza. Raw to the bone, it is avant-garde cinema with a glossy exterior. David Rayfeil's script spares no details in degrading women via ultra-violent scenes (one a la "The Accused") and a misogynistic message regarding men and feminine beauty. But as a whole--and not too taken seriously--LIPSTICK is 90 minutes of pure fun. The film has a Russ Myer feel to it, a sort of cinema verite of the late 60's (the ones who lured mostly the male clientele). Margaux Hemingway gives all she's got and comes up almost rosy despite her limited range. She may not be Meryl Streep, but, contrary to popular opinion, her performance is believable. Of course, then-12 year old Mariel do steal the show with her quiet but strong delivery. Every nuance of her emotional face shows the making of a great actress, and she did become one for awhile, while her older sister stumbled and stumbled in forgettable Z flicks. LIPSTICK was indeed the apogee of Margaux's career. Far from being Academy award worthy, it is definitely a fave among lovers of cult movies, and with good reasons. Now all it needs is a deluxe DVD edition with all the extra goodies.-----Martin Boucher

5 out of 5 stars Bad Acting, Grauitous Sex And A Non Existent Plot!!!.......2005-07-16

This movie was intended as a "Star Vehicle" for Margaux Hemingway but in reality is a turkey of a movie. In this film Margaux plays Chris, a model who invites her younger sister's teacher to her house. Then the rape scene which follows lasts about 30 minutes. That is about the entire plot for the movie. Chris' rapist gets acquited then he sexually assualts Chris' sister played by Mariel Hemingway. If you like graphic gratuitous scenes of rape then this movie is for you then maybe you should consider some much needed Therapy and Medication.

1 out of 5 stars The Professional Critics Are Right?.......2004-09-24

I watched Lipstick unedited and commercial free on cable TV one night when a cousin was visiting from out of state and my parents let her stay in my room and made me sleep on the sofa bed in the den but wound up saying up all night because the lumpy sofa bed was so uncomfortable and there was a huge spider on the ceiling that creeped me out and I wasn't used to sleeping anywhere but my own room so I wound up watching movies all night and one of them was Lipstick and I feel that the professional critics are right in giving this movie awful reviews and saying that it was one of the worst movies they ever had too watch and I definitely have to say that it was one of the worst movies I ever watched and I also agree with the profesional critics that an adorable young Mariel Hemingway in her first movie was quite impressive, I am not sure how old Mariel was when she made this movie but she looked like she was about 12 years old but even her very good acting couldn't save this crud and I also think Chris Sarandon who is a very good actor and Mariel's sister Margaux Heminway who isn't as bad an actress as the critics claimed had their acting talents wasted in this drek too!

If you recognize names like the Great Mae Young, Gladys "Killem" Gillem, and the Fabulous Moolah, then you long ago discovered the simple pleasure of watching women beat the heck out of each other. If not, then let Lipstick & Dynamite introduce you to some of the saltiest personalities ever to grace the wrestling ring, including the outspoken Ella Waldek, a former farmgirl turned roller derby jammer turned wrestling queen, who declares, "Whatever the referee didn't see was legal." This documentary mixes interviews, photos and film footage of actual bouts, and clips from shows like To Tell the Truth and cheesy movies like Racket Girls. There's some social commentary about the changing roles of women and society, but the real engine of this movie are the girls themselves, holding forth on angels and heels, sleazy producers (like the legendary "promoter of flesh" Billy Wolfe), fixed matches, the loneliness of the road, and much, much more. "Being tough didn't mean a damn thing," comments Gillem, who went on to wrestle lions and alligators after leaving the ring behind. Maybe not, but these tough old ladies are delightful company. Featuring a great soundtrack with songs by Neko Case and others. --Bret Fetzer

5 out of 5 stars Great Documentary about the lady wrestlers.......2006-11-29

I caught this documentary on cable on a lunch break and was late going back to work. My husband collects all the wrestling DVDs and I read all the wrestler's biographies. It was a wonderful thing to see a documentary that focused on the original ladies of wrestling. The women who wrestle today are so different from the ladies who pioneered women's wrestling it's nice to hear their stories. I had just read The Fabulous Moolah's biography and it was total kayfabe and completely one sided. It was nice to see the other side of the stories. I highly recommend this documentary for any wrestling fan, especially women.

    5 out of 5 stars Excellent!.......2006-01-11

This is an excellent documentary about the women who were the pioneers of lady professional wrestling. It is an interesting story and tells about their struggles against sexism and against each other in a cruel and dirty business. Great interviews with the ladies as they are today in their mid 60's, 70's and above mixed with wonderful clips of them as young ladies in their prime.

You don't have to be a wrestling fan to like this great documentary.

5 out of 5 stars This film had me totally pinned!.......2005-10-11

What a knockout documentary this is! It should be right up there with the best of the best. Forget the current trendy, hip "anti-establishment," "subversive" documentaries (no names shall be mentioned). This film is a direct descendant of the works of Albert Maysles, Ross McElwee, and Bruce Sinofsky. It's about incredible women who broke the mold and found their own unique way in the world. It takes a director like Leitman to so perfectly capture the many complex sides of these incredible creatures. There is no resolution to their stories, no pat answers. They are muddling their way through life just like the rest of us, and Leitman catches the horror, the triumph, and the wonderful strength and sense of humor many of them possess. This doc is as engrossing as any terrific feature -- it lets you into a world you've never known and changes you as a result. Kudos to Leitman. I can't wait for her first narrative feature film. She's a director to watch!!

    5 out of 5 stars One of a Kind.......2005-08-08

After you watch the movie you realize each of these ladies was
a one of a kind,in their own unique way. These women fought tooth and nail to give themselves a better life. It was good to see that because of Ruth Leitman these women have had a chance to tell their stories and will not be forgotten. How many women can say they were a lady wrestler, lion tamer, alligator wrestler, and to top it off raised three children by herself? It was interesting to hear how in spite of their occupation they still presented themselves as genteel ladies. Saw the movie and will definitely buy the DVD.

    5 out of 5 stars Wonderfully Entertaining..........2005-07-31

I saw this film first at the Tribeca Film Festival in 2004 and then I saw it several times in New York when it played there in March 2005. I have been a fan of Fabulous Moolah since 1984, and I always thought she deserved a lot of credit for what she did over the years. People who know her and Mae Young as the two silly characters they play on WWE tv don't know the real story. This movie tells the tale of the two of them as well as the other ladies who paved the way for women wrestlers. Nowadays, a woman can be called a "wrestler" if she wins a "Diva Search" contest, but back then the women really trained very hard to become true athletes. You don't have to be a wrestling fan to love this movie. I bought two copies...one for myself and one to loan to people. As the Daily News wrote, "Dynamite is the perfect word to describe this film".

1 out of 5 stars I must have missed it.......2007-04-01

Other reviewers have given the plot, so I'll skip that part. I watched this and don't understand what the excitement is about. Bergman is a prop here, with very little actual camera time. There is about 5 seconds of tension, and when the tense moments are resolved (the scene could have lasted longer), the ending becomes clear. Too predictable for me.

    5 out of 5 stars moving.......1999-12-31

This is a great movie, one of the best I've ever seen... it has romance, suspense, murder, and a lasting friendship. This is about a man who lends a lipstick camera to his friend( and secret love interest) Omy. She finds out her boyfriend cheated on her and now the woman is missing without a trace. Omy and Joule ( Corey Feldman) try to unravel the mystery. A compelling end as Joule dies after finding the truth. Omy finds a video tape of him telling his true feelings for her. She gets her chance to be a real reporter as she tapes the confession of her guilty boyfriend. A stirring story. One your not likely to forget. a real tear-jerker yet at the same time a dynamic thriller...

    5 out of 5 stars good movie.......1999-09-22

i liked the movie and i think that you should acknowledge the director and writer, mike bonifer. cates has nothing to do with the lipstick camera. other than that i think it was the best movie i've ever seen.

    3 out of 5 stars Riske film.......1999-08-03

Wasn't this on cable?, I saw this movie on a premium channel, it was kinda neat, it's about a little camera somepeople put in a house on a ceiling fan, it whitnesses a murder or something, and the photographer's appartment is ripped apart, allot of nudity, cool photos, and that's my summary.

I thoughly enjoyed the program, except that the first girl/girl/girl scene wasn't more revealing with more outward sexuality than just teasing. The last girl/girl scene was good, but it could've been hotter than it was. All in all it was Penthouse worthy. Looking forward to more female to female only scenes in the future.

    Description

This movie follows the development of one girl from fashion victim to futsal champion, learning along the way about what is important in life and love. College trendsetter Putri is determined to win back her sports-mad ex-boyfriend by turning into a futsal heroine herself. Facing prejudice and ridicule, and discovering, through her motley futsal team, the many difficulties faced by women in sports, Putri gradually finds within herself the strength and values of a true winner, on and off the pitch.

    Customer Reviews:

    5 out of 5 stars Girl Power!.......2007-01-12

Gol &Gincu is a wonderful entry into Malaysian culture. Partly a film about "girl-power" - a group of young women form a "futsal" team and is reminiscent of and inevitably compared to movies like `Bend it Like Becham.' Set in urban Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia the movie centers on Putri as she changes over time from prissy fashion princess to futsal champion. In the process of this transformation Putri learns about self worth, the ever-changing meaning of love, and life's important values like loyalty and perseverance. What began as a quest to win back her soccer-crazy ex-boyfriend by coming into his world - the lessons learned transcend the arguably juvenile goal - no pun intended. Bravely overcoming prejudice and ridicule, and slowly but surely learning to appreciate the diversity of and in women's sport Putri begins to find her place in the milieu. It is interesting from a media and sociological perspective that the movie has spun off into a TV series. It is light, it is accessible but it is also a very profound look into a country with a limited international output.

    1 out of 5 stars Bbbbbbbbbbbb Movie!.......2006-07-06

I think it's great that older women can get leading roles in crime thrillers. However, "V.I. Warshawski" did poorly decades ago and this movie does nothing to change that trend.

This movie substitutes rudeness for violence. You never see people die; you only hear about it after the fact, and often. Still, cops arrest the main character and they push her around when they could be civil. A Chinese mafioso threatens violent acts upon her even though she shows him no disrespect. She is hidden at a country woman's house and the woman greets her with a shotgun. The rudeness and hostility seemed so unnecessary. This film kept adding characters probably to make the plot more complex. However, it does nothing but extend the monotony of this dull work. The film does include a strip humiliation scene that is humrous, tighty-whitey comment and all.

The cast is diverse in terms of race and gender. They even have Bently from "The Jeffersons" in it. Cutie Sonny Landham appears here. However, his character meets the same fate that all of his movie characters do.
