A perennial Nielsen ratings topper, CSI: Crime Scene Investigation shows no signs of losing creative momentum in its sixth season. The 24 episodes are taut, fascinating, and gruesome; that killer combination fulfills the promise this CBS series has shown since its inception. In its sixth year, the show delves into the characters' personal lives more so than in previous seasons, adding more dimension and truth to the roles. We see the looks exchanged between head investigator Gil Grissom (William Petersen) and his underling Sara Sidle (Jorja Fox) and learn the true nature of their relationship. Catherine Willows (Marg Helgenberger) works on a case involving her estranged father that may land him behind bars. And partially in response to Nick Stokes' (George Eads) kidnapping last season, Warrick Brown (Gary Dourdan) impetuously marries his girlfriend, much to the chagrin of Catherine. The personal vignettes are never at the expense of the twisted cases, which include a murder attempt on a fading Vegas beauty (Faye Dunaway), siblings affected by hypertrichosis (excessive hair growth), and the return of Lady Heather (Melinda Clarke) in a startling episode penned by author Jerry Stahl (i>Permanent Midnight. But the season's most compelling storyline features straightforward detective Jim Brass (Paul Guilfoyle), who is embroiled in a shootout in a poor, Hispanic neighborhood. The racial tension between the police and the residents is thick and menacing, and no one is sure who is in the right.

The main problem with CSI also is something that can't be prevented. In order to clue viewers in to some of the complicated procedures the investigators are undertaking, the characters habitually explain to each other why they're performing a certain test or checking for other components. They're scientists and already know why. The special features include audio commentary on six episodes. One of the most interesting (and funny) featurettes is the sound editor explaining how he utilizes vegetables to enhance autopsy scenes--and then later uses the leftovers for snacks. --Jae-Ha Kim

I enjoy the episodes that I can watch. The second episode on each disk will not show the last 5 to 10 minutes. The third episode will not start and the fourth episode will not play without the writer's commentary. I can play every episode on my computer, but my family should not have to crowd around my 15 inch monitor to watch these shows.

I have the first 5 seasons and have no problems playing any of them. This season has glitches.

I bought this for my Daughter for Christmas, now she has season 1-6. And she bought me Season 1-5. I guess it was a CSI Christmas. My daughter and I do not agree much on shows, but we both enjoy this show. Although I live in Las Vegas and most of the scenes are not shot in Vegas, I still enjoy the series.

It's the best CSI season! Every character is even better than before, the cases extremely interesting.

to the characters. Someone gets married and two start seeing each other. The stories just weren't that great!

5 out of 5 stars Another Winning Season from My Favorite TV Show.......2007-05-14

I rarely watch television, but I absolutely love CSI. I usually end up with so many other things going on through the year that I can't watch it on a weekly basis, so I always purchase the boxed DVD sets when they become available. Man, was I in for a ride with Season 6!

All I can say is that my favorite characters are even better this time around, with more emotional storylines and personal issues to deal with. My favorite episdoes, by far, of Season 6 are "Gum Drops," dealing with the disappearance of a family of four, and "Pirates of the Third Reich," which deals with the horrendous murder of Lady Heather's daughter.

This season, more than any other before it (with, perhaps, the exception of C.S.I. Crime Scene Investigation - The Complete Fifth Season season finale), had me crying by the end of several episodes. I realize not everyone will have this type of reaction, but I do want to stress that Season 6 seemed to really pull on the heartstrings.

The only complaint I have about this season? Nick's choice of hairstyle, which really shouldn't be an issue at all, but which distracted me on numerous occasions by its sheer lack of any redeeming qualities!!

The nation's top-rated program got back to basics for its fourth season. The personal lives of the Las Vegas crime scene investigators would take more of a backseat to the stories themselves: the victims, the cases, the criminals. After a successful operation, William Peterson's Gil Grissom has regained his hearing--and his Manhunter-era beard--and is back in fighting form. "You're like your old self," Captain Brass (Paul Guilfoyle) notes in "All for Our Country." Just in time, as he'll soon be promoting one of his staff to lead CSI, and it's between Sara Sidle (Jorja Fox) and Nick Stokes (George Eads). He also has a new politically minded sheriff with which to contend, Rory Atwater (24's Xander Berkeley). The latter will make his first of several appearances in "Invisible Evidence," while the results of Grissom's lead CSI decision will be revealed in "No More Bets."

That said, one CSI will enjoy a bit of a personal life this season--Catherine Willows (Marg Helgenberger), who'll begin seeing nightclub owner Chris Bezich (Nicholas Lea, Krycek from The X-Files) in "Early Rollout." The other CSIs, particularly the re-energized Grissom, will remain as married to their jobs as ever--although the latter's unspoken interest in Sara will be tested in "Butterflied."

Other episodes of note include "Feeling the Heat," with Stacy Edwards and Arye Gross, "Jackpot," with Henry Czerny and Re-Animator's Jeffrey Combs, and the instantly infamous "Fur and Loathing," which was written by Jerry Stahl (Permanent Midnight) and centers on the death of a "furry." As Grissom explains to Willows, "furries" are a "tribe of people who prefer to interact as furry animals." Stahl also penned "Getting Off," about the death of a clown, and continues to come up with some of this still-groundbreaking series' most colorful scenarios. --Kathleen C. Fennessy

4 out of 5 stars great show.......2006-08-07

I've seen CSI several times and have always meant to buy the DVDs. I haven't yet purchased this season, but I will.

The one episode in this season that really hooked me was Episode 8: After the Show. All of the previous reviewers failed to mention that this "high profile case" is based on a TRUE story....the death of model Linda Sobek, who was not only a model but a former cheerleader for the LA Raiders. The man who was "infatuated" with her was found guilty of her murder (he even led police to her shallow grave) and was sentenced to life in prison without possibility of parole.

CSI knows how to grip its audience with edge of the seat story lines. I've got a lot of catching up to do with purchasing these seasons so that I can continue to admire the show and its continuous perfection of how it captures each case/episode.

Murder, and its tale-telling aftermath, is the compelling subject of CSI: Crime Scene Investigation. Since it premiered on CBS on October 6, 2000, CSI was a ratings triumph, spawning a spinoff (CSI: Miami) and positioning itself for long-term success. As the first season demonstrates, creator Anthony Zuiker's foolproof formula was established early on, bolstered by a fine ensemble cast and requiring minimal tweaking as the season progressed; its Las Vegas-based "criminalists" eventually became "CSI" steeped in the scientific minutiae of forensic investigation, but the series arrived essentially intact, with an irresistible (and seemingly inexhaustible) supply of corpses and the mysteries that surround them. Influenced by the graphic precedent of movies like Seven and Kiss the Girls, CSI matches morbidity with dispassionate methodology; viewers are so fascinated by the investigative process that they're unfazed by intimate autopsies and internal (i.e., digitally animated) views of traumatized flesh, bone, and sinew.

While keeping abreast of cutting-edge technologies, CSI combines the ingenuity (and fallibility) of villains with the appealing humanity of its heroes. CSI director and entomologist Gil Grissom (played by series coproducer William Petersen) is introverted but ethically intense; he's both mentor and moral compass for his night-shift team, including a former stripper-turned-CSI (Marg Helgenberger); a recovering gambler (Gary Dourdan); an eager ace (George Eads) with room for improvement; a workaholic (Jorja Fox) who can't always remain emotionally detached from her cases; and a chief detective (Paul Guilfoyle) who's a necessary link to police procedure. Like The X-Files, CSI supports its characters with feature-film production values, employing a Rashomon structure that turns murder into a progressively accurate study of cause and effect. Script quality is consistently high ("Blood Drops" and "Unfriendly Skies" are exceptional), direction is slick and sophisticated, and the mysteries are complex enough to invite multiple viewings. Despite a regrettable shortage of DVD features, CSI's inaugural season remains addictively worthy of its lofty reputation. --Jeff Shannon

2 out of 5 stars CSI the First season........2007-09-10

CSI First season is very good, but it would be a lot better if all the episodes worked. I have looked at the first 4 disks and there were 4 programs which broke up and you could not watch them.
Since I live in Thailand returning the set was not an option., but I am very upset that apparantly no one tested the discs prior to them going on sale.
This will be my last video purchase here at Amazon....

5 out of 5 stars CSI is GREAT!.......2007-05-17

I am a new CSI fan - saw a few of the 6th season on TV and then rented most of the 4th season from the video store. I just LOVED the show so I has to get in on it from the beginning. I have now seen the 1st - 4th seasons and just got the 5th. It's a great show, love the science and human aspects of each espisode and watching the development of the characters. Good job Jerry Bruckheimer - you have another winner!!

5 out of 5 stars Greatest show ever.......2007-04-15

Ive seen basically ever show on the telly, and none can compare to this show. The characters are well done and all fun to watch. William Peterson as Gil Grissom is my probably my faviorte television character of all time. He is just amazing to watch, and I love his sense of humuor. A big reason why this show is so great is the way they review the cases. They show different events of how it could happen, then figure one out. Most shows just say it how it happened, but dont show it. Ive seen all seven seasons thus far and have yet to grow tired of it.

5 out of 5 stars great set.......2007-04-10

Grissom, along with his tough Captain, Jim Brass (Paul Guilfoyle), takes on a series of cases which would be untouchable by other labs, in a city with a constant influx of visitors and a series of increasingly baffling crimes. This 6-DVD set includes all 23 episodes from the second season.

The second season of CSI: Crime Scene Investigation consolidates the show's well-deserved popular appeal, while beginning to explore (gently at first) beneath the slickly professional surface of the investigators themselves. Gradually we learn more about what makes Grissom and his astonishingly gifted forensics team tick, beyond merely that they are workaholics who seem to require no sleep at all. The show's trademark reveals of vital evidence--be it on the autopsy slab or under the microscope--add a fresh spin to what is, at heart, a good old-fashioned whodunit series. William Petersen brings the requisite air of antiquarianism to a character whose meticulous demeanor and love of order consciously inherits the mantle of Sherlock Holmes (whose vast collection of tobacco samples and bottles of chemicals are the ancestors of CSI's high-tech crime lab). This is a series in which scientific evidence-gathering is elevated to the status of a religion. "When a tree falls in the forest, even if no one is around to hear, it does make a sound," affirms Grissom with the calm assurance of a yogi on the path to Enlightenment.

And just when CSI starts to seem a little too pat, just when the trail of clues seems a little too neat, the show always seems able to throw a surprise or two at us: perhaps there has been no crime after all; perhaps the evidence concerns a completely different crime altogether; or perhaps, as in one brave episode concerning brothers implicated in multiple murders, the evidence simply isn't good enough to convict the right man, even when Grissom knows which one really is guilty. As a result, every episode is simply compulsive viewing. --Mark Walker

Relaxing at the top of the Nielsen ratings, C.S.I. Crime Scene Investigation: The Complete Fifth Season stretched its legs a little to wander into the more grisly, more disturbing, and altogether more personal. "Down the Drain" showed the first overt romantic moment--in the form of a near-kiss--between Catherine Willows (Marg Helgenberger) and Warrick Brown (Gary Dourdan), which was discussed at length in the commentary and behind-the-scenes featurette as "a big moment." After that tease, the series pulled back and plunged into some of its most disturbing crimes yet. In "King Baby," a wealthy, middle-aged murder victim turns out to have lived as a baby, complete with adult-sized nursery; in "4x4," a personal trainer's face is eaten away from the inside out due to toxic mold in his house; in "Compulsion," a teen boy kills his younger brother for revealing that the older brother wets the bed.

The biggest change in this season is an HR one: new director Conrad Ecklie (Marc Vann) splits up the team, making Willows a shift supervisor and causing friction between she and Sara Sidle (Jorja Fox). He also adds a new member, Sofia Curtis (Louise Lombard), to banter with Gil Grissom (William Petersen)'s team. The move doesn't dampen the show's pace, as most cases break the team into twosomes anyway. But it does add a new villain in Ecklie, all politics and PR versus Grissom's heart to protect his team. Meanwhile, other cases dig deeper into the personal demons of Sidle and Willows; and the season finale, a slam-bam two-parter handily directed by Quentin Tarantino, focuses on the kidnapping of Nick Stokes (George Eads), buried alive with fire ants. This episode, the most emotionally charged yet, brings the entire team together and shows why it's still the No. 1 show on television. --Ellen A. Kim

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Good, but chipped.......2007-06-03

I LOVED IT, and it came, I believe, a day sooner than projected. The case was chipped, in shipping, I presume, but I wanted to start watching the show. Thanks for the fast service!!

5 out of 5 stars Finale unprecedented in TV; gripping, horrifying.......2007-03-03

This show has some of the best writing, directing and acting ever produced on TV, and its two-part finale, "Grave Danger," reached levels of greatness unprecedented on TV. Quentin Tarantino unflinchingly explores the darkest taboo themes in human nature, exploiting the worst fears. In this case, being buried alive. It was a masterstroke having Nick Stokes, the carefree resident he-guy playboy of the show, to be the victim. And for once, making a male the victim. In most of their cases, the CSI team commences with cool calm in assembling their evidence and in solving their murder cases; the repetitiveness of their jobs give them a certain immunity to the constant brutality of their work. But here we have Nick Stokes, drugged and placed into a plastic box underground. He has lost all control, and has no way out. Certain to face a slow, agonizing death. We see Nick flailing helplessly and screaming in sheer terror and panic. Watching this is like a real-life nightmare; if this does not leave you shivering, you're made of strong stuff. The implied claustrophobia is staggeringly suffocating: you are placed in the ground with Nick, and you feel his anticipation of the worst of what he knows is certain. Tarantino is a master at manipulative fear-tapping, and nowhere else will you experience such a terrifying identification as here. The director has the entire cast effectively on edge, some of them numbed into shocked silence, others totally freaked out. Highest honors, though, goes to George Eads for his completely unexpected virtuoso performance. He should have won an Emmy. Who would have expected Eads to go from an efficiently competent actor to one of dazzling range of depth? When was the last time any male character was made to seem so vulnerable, so helpless, so completely downright scared crapless? Eads screams and cries like a boy; his character's adult male control has been taken away from him, and the actor assails the viewer with an unspeakable sense of cold, clammy dread. A woman would react to this as a girlfriend and mother would, but speaking as a male, I cannot imagine a more sinister scenario (short of being castrated) than this. Most movie/tv situations has the male hero nearly always in control, or at least, having a means, a plan, a way out. Not here. It violates the standard dictum of the hero ingeniously conquering all, and therefore, it is a stunning innovation.
The one small cavil I have is that the end of the episode did not provide us to see a great emotional catharsis of Nick and the other characters in the final resolution. But that is a minor point. All told, this slow, clautrophobic agony of terror is one of TV's greatest moments.

5 out of 5 stars CSI: Las Vegas Season 5.......2007-02-11

You can't go wrong with this season if you are a CSI: Las Vegas fan. Somehow the writers of this show just keep coming up with new and fresh ideas. There is nothing like the "original" CSI!

Now firmly established as the top-rated television drama, by its third year CSI: Crime Scene Investigation is a show positively glowing with confidence. Even when individual cases seem either too contrived or too easily resolved, the indefatigable night shift at the Las Vegas PD crime lab always look the part, solving conundrums and discovering microscopic damning evidence while, apparently, never shedding their own loose hair or skin cells all over the supposedly quarantined crime scenes. In reality, Catherine Willows's flowing blonde locks would contaminate any evidence she collected, but in the world of CSI only the bad guys leave body parts behind--the CSIs themselves are so good they're positively pristine.

The 23 episodes of season 3 on this five-disc set present more deliciously bizarre situations for the problem-solving sleuths: cannibalism, snuff movies, dwarfs, death while drag racing, bodies falling from the sky, and various dismemberments all tax the team's acumen. These are all double or multiple-case episodes, though in a characteristic trick of the writing sometimes apparently unrelated murders turn out to be connected (or vice versa, as in "Blood Lust," in which a road-accident victim is not what he seems, and the death of the driver at the hands of an angry mob is made all the more tragic). The mix of genuine forensic science with the glossiest Jerry Bruckheimer production values, plus the virtues of a good ensemble cast headed by William Peterson's modern-day Sherlock Holmes, remains as compelling as ever. --Mark Walker

This box set is a must have for CSI fans. I will be buying the 7th season.

3 out of 5 stars Charecters Growing Old.......2007-07-01

Starting too tire of the crews attitude and arrogance. They are cops for Pete's sake, not the end all of morality and all that is good. The episodes are starting to blend together and all have a familiar undertone of we are better then you feeling. These folks need a good dose of humble pie.

5 out of 5 stars I love it........2007-03-18

I am a big fan of CSI and I loved the third season.

5 out of 5 stars What can I say?.......2007-01-27

I LOVE CSI. The show is just brilliant, the actors have depth and skill that showcase the true star... SCIENCE! There are some good extras included on the dvd's, with some behind-the-scenes peeks. This was a gift for my husband, but, we both enjoy it (the only drawback is that you should not watch this with kids around, so we only get to see episodes when our son is already in bed asleep).

5 out of 5 stars CSI Las Vegas 3rd Season.......2007-01-12

For us dyed-in-the wool CSI fans, the Las Vegas site is the best and this collection of programs is pure delight (if a bit gory at times). For those who are not entranced by Jerry Bruchheimer's latest hit series, it will probably be sometimes tedious. Accurate science (I'm a chemistry and microbiology/immunology major), great scripts with good characterization, and wonderful desert scenery and camera work.

5 out of 5 stars GREAT BUY!.......2007-08-08

This is a GREAT collection - the price might throw people off at first sight but seriously you save a Decently large amount vs had you bought them one by one...but i LOVE it - i've watched all the seasons like 3 times now - they just dont get old. Definitely a good investment!

3 out of 5 stars Subtitles and Language.......2007-06-18

I bought the set about 3 months ago and I'm still watching them. I always loved the caracters, almost coming from the ordinary world, and the way the whole serie has been done. Back home, I used to watch episode by episode, and not even everything...so I missed a lot and really wanted to have all of them together, now that I do, I'm glad.
However, I couldn't imagine such a famous serie wouldn't have any subtitles in English or in Spanish. And it only offers two audio languages options: in Enlgish and in Spanish. I mean back in a lot of non-English or non-Spanish countries they watch CSI Vegas doubled in their own language. I would have expected it to have at least a French Option audio language + all three subtitles, but I was very disappointed when I found out that there is not any subtitle unless you watched with a TV that has captioned option, too bad!
Apart from that, the overall quantity of the serie is great, and I hope they will add in the future more languages and subtitles, because I believe that a TV serie with that reputation should allow anyone around the world to watch it! I received my shipment on time and in very good condition!
So far, I have never been disappointed by Amazon, it's great to do business with them.

Kind Regards

3 out of 5 stars SUBTITLES.......2007-05-10

EVERYTHING WAS GREAT BUT NONE OF THE SIX SEASONS HAVE SPANISH SUBTITLES. TODAY EVERY DVD COMES WITH 6 OR 7 LANGUAGES BUT OTHER THAN THAT NO PROBLEM

5 out of 5 stars Love these characters.......2007-01-13

What can I say? So far (six seasons) this is my favorite series! I am seeing some camera angle and speed changes near the end of the last season, and I do not like it. I want characters to take their time solving the puzzles--I want to see the steps. I like the characters and the actors for the most part. Characters expressing their humanity while solving puzzles draw me in.

BUT, who is the smart "a" giving Grissom the one-liners at the beginning of some of the episodes. OK, some of the one-liners are funny, but for the most part, I wonder if Peterson might feel idiotic saying them.

Started out with just csi, then my daughter Linda told my husband and I about the Miami series, watched it and became hooked. Iam now a real fan of all the csi's. I am partial to the new york one. But I still love miami too.

5 out of 5 stars Perfect timing!!.......2007-07-05

This set was one of my daughter's birthday presents. I was sweating the arrival time of the package....much to my relief, the order arrived in no time!!

5 out of 5 stars Building a great show from the ground up.......2007-03-24

I resisted getting interested in the "other" C.S.I. shows even though I had always been a fan of the original. I still haven't become enamored with C.S.I. NY, but I have to admit C.S.I. Miami has me hooked. David Caruso's Horatio Caine is both decent and fair while remaining a hardened cop. That is a delicate balance difficult to pull off, especially in one hour episodes, but he accomplishes it with aplomb. I recommend this series to anyone interested in the genre. Looking forward to watching Season 3!

Along with Deconstructing Harry which would follow seven years later, this is Woody Allen's most somber comedy-drama, as well as his most ambitious film of the 1980s. Allen weaves together two central stories about very different groups of Manhattanites, linking them through a mutual friend, a rabbi (Sam Waterston) who's going blind. This image is key to the sometimes ponderous, often clever musings on faith, morals, and vision (or lack thereof) that obsess his deeply troubled and unhappy characters. At its center, the film explores people who, through lack of religious conviction or arrogance, rationalize their awful, selfish acts by presuming that God couldn't possibly be watching.

The central story--a neo-noir of sorts--follows a fortuitous ophthalmologist (Martin Landau, all sweat and grimaces) who faces the prospect of his obsessed mistress (Anjelica Huston) ruining his life by telling his family of their affair. Desperate, the doctor hires his slimy criminal brother (Jerry Orbach) to eliminate the situation, and then suffers overwhelming regret afterwards. The flip tale is more typical Allen. Funnier and lighter, it focuses on an impossible romance between Allen's character and Halley Reed, a film producer played by Mia Farrow. Between Allen and his Hollywood fantasy stands his brother-in-law (Alan Alda, perfectly cast as an obnoxious, successful sitcom producer), who also desires Halley. Allen is Landau's opposite: an honest, struggling documentarian who cares nothing about fortune, suffers in a loveless marriage, and is surrounded by triumphant phonies. The nice-guys-finish-last moral may be as contrived as it is devastating. Yet, when Landau and Allen finally share a final scene during a wedding, their faces, subtle body movements, and contrasting fortunes somehow suggest that indeed God may be blind, and if not, the deity has a very sick sense of humor. --Dave McCoy

Description

"Poignant, penetrating [and] scathingly hilarious" (Long Beach Press Telegram), Crimes and Misdemeanors is a deftly rendered tale about the complexity of human choices and the moral microcosms they represent. Showcasing Allen's brilliant grasp of the link between the funny and the fatal, his 19th movie is "one of the watershed films of his career" (Los Angeles Times). Cliff Stern (Woody Allen) is an idealistic filmmaker until he's offered a lucrative job shooting aflattering profile of a pompous TV producer (Alan Alda). Judah Rosenthal (Martin Landau) is the pillar of his community until he learns that his ex-mistress (Anjelica Huston) plans to expose his financial and extramarital misdeeds. As Cliff chooses between integrity and selling out, and Judah decides between the counsel of his rabbi (Sam Waterston) and the murderous advice of his mobster brother (Jerry Orbach), each man must examine his own morality, and make an irrevocable decisionthat willchange everyone's lives forever.

5 out of 5 stars "We define ourselves by the choices we have made...".......2007-08-03

Love him or hate him, it's very hard to deny the fact that Woody Allen is extremely talented when it comes to making films and comedy. Yes, the real Woody Allen has issues and problems, but I am able to enjoy Woody Allen as a brilliant filmmaker with a very impressive body of work. "Crimes and Misdemeanors" was a complete surprise for me. It's a darker and more serious picture from Allen, but there's still enough comedy that feels real and not forced.

The film focuses on two main characters. The first is a successful ophthalmologist, Judah, who has a loving wife and family. He seems to have it all, but his prosperous and rich life is threatened when his mistress is fed up with not being able to have all of Judah to herself and wants to come clean to his wife. Judah has no idea what to do, and since he can't buy her off or talk her out of it, he goes to his criminal brother for advice. When he suggests that she can be "gotten rid of," Judah is faced with a serious choice to make and must consider the consequences. The second part of the story involves a very idealistic and artsy filmmaker, Cliff. In order to make the philosophical and human inspirited documentary he has planned, he has to stoop down to making a film centered around a goofy sitcom producer who he despises, just so Cliff can finance the project.

These two stories are very different from each other, and at first you start to wonder what the significance is. It is true that Judah's story is much more captivating, but we also need the Cliff story as this is a movie that is about tough choices, and it examines if somebody can live with the decisions they make, no matter how small or major they may be. I will also say this much; this is a film that requires multiple viewings, because this film will most likely take you by surprise. I would call this more of a drama than a comedy, but there are a lot of comedic touches to it as well. The writing and directing from Allen is top notch, and this could be one of his most complex films. The cast is also terrific with a lot of big names, and none of them disappoint.

What I really enjoy about this movie is that all of the characters are fully fleshed out. Nobody seems flat and no matter how flawed somebody may appear, you can still see traces, if not more, of humanity within them somehow. That to me makes the movie even more chilling and dark at times. These aren't goofy cartoon characters where you know from the start who's good and who's rotten to the core. These people come off as being real, and that's a talent Allen has when it comes to making films that aren't so slapstick, and this is an important key that makes "Crimes and Misdemeanors" work in the end. The characters have real problems and obstacles, and they have to decide in the end, when the smoke is clear, if they can live with themselves with the choices they have made. -Michael Crane

5 out of 5 stars very true to human life.......2007-07-17

A serious film and a great film. Depicts what all to often happens to carying people when the emotions are allowed to take over. Avoiding these pitfalls enables good people to stay good people.

5 out of 5 stars Crimes and Misdemeanors.......2007-07-06

This funny, intelligent drama trails two pairs of Manhattan men who couldn't be more different: Judah is an emblem of respectability and brother Jack's a wise-guy realist, while Cliff and Lester represent the divergent aims of art and commercialism, respectively. Alternating between the moral melodrama of the first tale, and the witty romantic comedy of the second, Allen launches his finest work of the '80s, cleverly considering questions of ethics and integrity with levity and nebbishy introspection. Crisply directed and finely acted (Alda, Landau, and Huston are especially good), you'll want to do some time with "Crimes."

4 out of 5 stars a long long time ago, woody allen made good movies.......2007-05-12

woody allens best film since the 70s (and hey this one was 18 years ago!) features great acting turns by martin landau, sam waterston, alan alda, angelica huston, jerry orbach, joanna gleason, claire bloom, and even the usually awful mia farrow (who it might be noted hasnt been cast by a real director she want sleepoing with in 30+ years). his nod to dostoevski (however you want to spell that guys name) is clear in both the title and theme, and for once (maybe its because he only plays a minor role) one of his his post-"manhattan" manhattan movies comes off as real instead of stilted.

5 out of 5 stars My favorite Woody Allen film.......2007-03-15

Simply put, a terrific movie and Allen's masterpiece. At once funny, troubling, romantic, hopeful, sad... Allen manages to both sypathize with and damn the characters in both stories. Interesting plot, truly great acting, and a screenplay that makes you think about the common themes of Allen's work (death, humor, love, identity, etc.) in new ways.

I'm writing this after years of watching and re-watching because I just saw Match Point, which horribly cribs this movie's characters and plot and marries them with bad acting and a terrible screenplay. Sadly, Match Point was heralded as Allen's best film in years. Wha?

ROCKERS - 25TH ANNIVERSARY EDITION (DVD MOVIE)

Amazon.com

Writer-director Theodoros Bafaloukos responded to Jamaica's siren call all the way over in Greece and came to the island to make this 1977 movie about a band of Rasta men/Robin Hoods getting their own back at the expense of those perennial bloodsuckers, the "uptown top rankings," as men of money and position are called in Jamaica. The reggae star-studded cast is undoubtedly the movie's most rewarding feature, though some reggae fans have objected to the demeaning sight of the incomparable late singer Jacob Miller threatening a friend with a knife over a purloined chicken leg or the equally great singer Gregory Isaacs exacting chump change for unlocking a tourist's rental car. However, these and other great reggae figures are also seen here in full and glorious performance at their peak. In fact, this film provides our only extended visual record of Miller's kinetic performance style and one of the best pieces of footage on Isaacs. Although Rockers doesn't approach the multilayered complexity of The Harder They Come and it does betray a little superiority now and then to its characters, there are plenty of laughs as well as insights into life at the time for Jamaica's growing Rastafarian movement. Drummer Leroy "Horsemouth" Wallace makes an unlikely though quintessentially Jamaican leading man as he moves between wooing the rich man's virginal daughter and making pit stops at the shack he shares with his wife and children. His band of accomplices is priceless, and the scene in which each struts in his own "stylee" to Peter Tosh's "Stepping Razor" is alone worth the price. --Elena Oumano

5 out of 5 stars A must see.......2007-06-09

When I first watched this film I found it to be a unique movie that is really enjoyable. It is filled with allot of Jamaican roots music It has a Rastafarian glossary, english subtitle and great proformances by some of Jamaica's favorite artists including the late and very talented Jacob Miller who passed on in 1980. I feel this movie is a must see for those who love reggae music.

5 out of 5 stars Great Film.......2007-06-06

Rockers is a film about music, struggle, family, friends, and religion. The musical influence in this culture plays a vital role in the lives of the characters. Faith and reality seem to act as crutch or support in the day to day experience in which they live. An uplifting film filled with music and heart, a must see.

5 out of 5 stars Loved It!.......2007-02-04

This is my first time seeing the movie. I was introduced to the movie by a friend. I had recently seen "The Harder They Come" and liked it. This movie which was supposed to be a documentary was loosely based on "The Bicycle Thief" a movie done by the late Vittoria DiSica. The reggae artist played themselves not only as musicians but as Rastafarians.
This DVD explains the Rastafarian culture in Jamaica and how it relates to the movie. The Rastas do not embrace the establishment--capitalism, consumerism, and the police. Speaking of police, the police are an instrument enforced by the government to suppress the people and it did show when they were trying to prevent Horseman and his friend from playing dub at a club that was playing American funk music. The club owner didn't find it necessary to have them tear down the door to let him in. The clubgoers warmed up to the music.
This movie shows how expressive and powerful music is and government feels threatened by the words because they speak the truth. If anyone wants to know about the Rastafarian culture this is a good movie to start with. But it is also an entertaining movie because they are robbing from the rich to give to the poor.

5 out of 5 stars African Movie Cult Fav.......2006-03-20

I thought the old school rasta independant movie was sooo cool. Livin in the states we have no idea how real people live in Jamrock. The soundtrack is bangin as well.

5 out of 5 stars Loved it!.......2005-09-11

I loved Rockers. Authentically captures the magic of Rasta and the Reggae scene at its heyday. Great acting, delighful and chaotic Jamaican dialogue, and well filmed. The musical performances are just awesome, especially the hauntingly beautiful acapella version of Jah No Dead by a young Burning Spear.
The patois glossary in the extras is fun if a bit cheesy, and although the interview with the director is a bit slow it is still interesting for its insight into the Jamaican music scene at the time.
This film is a one of a kind and very satisfying for lovers of Reggae, Rasta and Jamaica.
