Jodie Foster won her first Oscar for her role in this drama, based on an actual incident. She plays a girl out for a night of fun at a poolroom. Before she knows what's happening, the men she's been flirting with have pinned her down for a gang rape. The story centers on the efforts of a district attorney (Kelly McGillis) to press her case, in spite of a wall of silence by the participants--and then to take the unusual step of going after the witnesses as accomplices. Foster is outstanding as a tough, blue-collar woman who persists in what seems like an unwinnable case, despite the prospect of character assassination for standing up for herself. --Marshall Fine

The Accused.......2007-07-09

Based on a real-life incident, Jonathan Kaplan's hard-hitting drama is an eye-opener, examining a woman's right to exhibit her sexuality, and still not be physically violated against her will. Oscar winner Foster is riveting in a gritty, largely unsympathetic role, and McGillis provides an ideal counterbalance as a somewhat sheltered lawyer whose social conscience gets re-awakened. Absorbing from start to finish, "The Accused" is definitely not for kids or the squeamish.

Let's Get Serious Here.......2007-05-06

There are a number of positive facets to "The Accused" such as a challenging legal issue, a crime that is suggested at the beginning but isn't shown until the end, and enough uncertainty about the plot to keep us a bit off guard. However, there are some negative facets as well.

I didn't think that the acting, overall, was all that impressive. For example, there's a witness who expresses concern about assisting in an investigation because some of the people involved are pretty scary. Hollywood does a lot better at making people appear dangerous than what we see in "The Accused". We understand who the bad guys are and we generally get the impression that they deserve whatever they have coming. However, they come across, to me, more stupid than scary. I suspect that the script and casting may have been at fault as much at the actors themselves. Then again, costumes and make-up could have helped as well. The whole cast left me expecting better. Jody Foster won the Best Actress Oscar in a weak year in a role that virtually guaranteed a nomination for whomever got the part. She did alright but, again, costumes and make-up failed in their job. Jody looks a little too well-kept to play the role as I understood it. She looked more like a sorority sister suffering from laziness and bad judgement than a working girl on a dead end path.

To preface my final point, I have to admit that I watched this movie on TV and on a family oriented channel. I assume that the movie I saw was "sanitized" for general audiences. I also note that it is an R-rated movie in its' theatrical release. However, I came away thinking that I had watched a "made for TV" movie. There's just something missing from "The Accused" that makes it seem that no one put too much time and effort into making it. It's a good movie for the reasons that I mentioned above. The legal issue involved was unique and, though it may have its' detractors, the movie makes a good case for it. The way we are kept in suspense as to what to expect next worked well and kept me guessing. What helped even more is not knowing exactly what DID happen until the last 20 minutes or so. It's a good movie but it could have been so much better than it was.

The Accused.......2007-04-01

It is still a good movie to watch and it has passed the test of time. A good storyline and great performance by Kelly Mcglllis and Jodie Foster are the plus point of this great movie. Jodlie's performance earned her an oscar and she deserves it.

When No Means No.......2006-11-20

Jodie Foster gives a performance of a lifetime in her portrayal of a rape victim who is essentially demonized by a system that questions the motives of a woman who "placed herself into a situation of mixed messages."

The rape scene is graphic and depicts the utter viciousness of such attacks. The movie also shows a legal system that places barriers in front of the individual who suffered one of the most heinous crimes imaginable. She is everything but a victim; a liar, a drunk, a drug addict, a "bad" person.

I strongly feel the movie should be scheduled in a classroom setting for every high-school senior. The messages within this society remain unbelievably muddled that the real ramifications of this crime should be seen and discussed.

The Accused is as powerful today as when it was released in 1988. And I guess that says how little society has advanced in the treatment of women.

With the success of There's Something About Mary, the brothers Farrelly would seem to have inherited the dumb-comedy crown from the various talents who made Airplane! and its many descendants: Top Secret!, The Naked Gun, Hot Shots!. For the most part, that's true, but as Wrongfully Accused proves, there's a bit of life in the old shtick. Pat Proft, a screenwriter on The Naked Gun series and Hot Shots!, makes his directorial debut with this farce, which stars--surprise, surprise--Leslie Nielsen in a parody of the feature version of The Fugitive. More than that: Proft piles on joking references to a host of other dramas, including Casablanca, Mission: Impossible, and Braveheart. While the persistence of these inter-movie gags can wear a viewer down a bit, the fact is some of the silly stuff really does hit its target. If the progeny of Airplane! were to end with this movie, it would be a worthy way to say farewell to a once-good idea. A Ton Of Fun For Film Buffs.......2006-05-03

Since "The Fugitive" is one of my all-time favorites, this takeoff on it was a lot of fun for me to watch. Hey, sometimes it's best to laugh at ourselves and the things we like. For much of it, this movie was laugh-out-loud funny.

It helped not only to know "The Fugitive" story well but also "North By Northwest," "Casablanca" "Titantic," "Star Wars" and many, many other films, both classic and modern-day. The more familiar you are with movies, the more of these "inside" jokes are going to make you laugh. Being a movie buff, a lot of these gags connected and made me really have a good time watching this Leslie Nielsen farce.

Be warned, parents: this is not a family comedy. There are tons of sexual innuendos, so typical of today's comedies....but overall, this is really funny stuff and highly recommended if you watched a lot films in your lifetime.

Advertised as almost softcore, it isn't that right off the bat. As a film, the acting is good with Zero Woman, a pretty Bond like assasin, looking for a sereal killer. There is a bit of nudity and violence as she befriends a man who has been raped. The relationship becomes a complicated one. Three stars is generous, for die hard Asian film fans.

Not worth a dollar.......2004-07-04

Considering the dvd-worthy titles out there awaiting digital transfer, I was a little surprised to find this 70s-era made-for-television movie in the $1 cut-out bin at a local used book store.
A WOMAN ACCUSED is unwatchable (never thought I'd say that about a movie that has Anthony Zerbe in it.) The problem is with the sound. Background noises and music swamp the dialogue track - somebody walking across a room sounds like the French army storming the gates of Moscow. A background violin drowns out whatever the actors are saying. Not being a lip-reader I couldn't finish this movie. If you're thinking about purchasing it, buy it from a reputable dealer that allows returns.
