DJ Qbert's complete DO-IT-YOURSELF, Vol. 1 Skratching
ASIN: B00006AL1G
Release Date: 2002-09-17 |
Amazon.com
In the language of hip-hop, the MC raps on top of the beats. The DJ--or turntablist--supplies the beats. Doug Pray's lively documentary is a tribute to these unsung heroes of the "scratch." His approach is neither dry nor academic and is designed as much for the masters of the form as for the fans. Pray was also behind Hype!, which focused on the Seattle scene in the 1980s and 1990s. In his 2002 follow-up, he travels as far back as the 1970s (DJ Kool Herc, Afrika Bambaataa) and roams the U.S. from New York (Gang Starr's DJ Premier) to the Bay Area (DJ Shadow, Q-Bert). After watching the film and grooving to the beat, you're likely to wonder if there's a soundtrack to accompany it. Fortunately, there is--Bill Laswell, producer of Herbie Hancock's seminal "Rockit," is behind a compilation featuring many of the same artists celebrated in Scratch. --Kathleen C. Fennessy
Description
Director Doug Pray (Hype) pays tribute to the innovative art of DJing in the electrifying documentary Scratch. Featuring the most legendary figures in the DJ scene, Pray's film is at once a deeply insightful historical document and a highly entertaining glimpse into the world of underground hip-hop. Modern luminaries such as DJ Shadow, Mix Master Mike (of the Beastie Boys), DJ Q-bert, Rob Swift, and DJ Swamp are interviewed alongside living legends like Afrika Bambaataa, Jazzy Jay, and Grand Mixer DXT, in order to paint a broad, comprehensive picture of how DJing has evolved over the years.
Seamlessly cutting between interviews and actual footage filmed at several high-profile DJing contests including Skratchcon 2000 and the DMC U.S. Finals, Pray's film is a must-see for both seasoned fans and the uninitiated, a celebration of one of the late-20th century's most thrilling, original musical movements.
Customer Reviews:
Great, interesting, but not completely comprehensive.......2007-06-10
I would have liked to see this be more up to date, and a bit more comprehensive. The DVD case lists DJ Krush (whom I am a fan of) as one of the DJ's featured, but it only very quickly just shows him and mentions his name which I thought was a bit cheap. The piece on DJ Shadow was interesting. I like the different aspects the movie covers: technical, social, history, as well as a taste of some of the personalities.
DVD extras are interesting. Particularly some of the instructional how-to stuff. Almost makes me want to get some equipment and try it!
Absolutely Essential!.......2007-02-07
Goes down in my favorite hip-hop videos of all time.
My favorites are this, breakin, breakin 2, and freshest kids.
This actually helped lead me into breakdancing. From there I got How To Do The Robot - Breakdance Instructional DVD or Top 20 Breakdance Moves. These ones turned me from a hip-hop spectator into a serious breakdancer.
All of these are essential!
A genuine treat.......2007-01-12
From the opening sequence to the closing credits, this DVD presents the story of Hip Hop from its roots to present day. Impressive performances, interesting interviews and chock full of the people who made the music that influcenced almost all popular music of today. A must-see for any true Hip Hop fan.
Good documentary, but came up short in the trenches.........2006-05-13
This is a good documentary and I can appreciate that it was done since none of the pioneers put one out(like Crazy legz did for Freshest Kids). This documentary is more towards the general audience that don't have any knowledge of DJ'in or hip hop. But us old school guys won't get much out of it.
It focused more on the current DJ's rather than the history. They could have given the pioneers in NY alot more time, and then included the pioneers from California, and Miami. Starting off in L.A. with Joe Cooley, Dr Dre., Uncle Jamms ARmy, Unknown DJ etc. Then move up to Northern California would have been nice to see something about Cameron Paul, the IMAGINE Battles, then they could have brought in QBert. Qbert was on here, but there was no mention of the IMAGINE battles in the San Francisco bay area during the 1980's, im sure these battles where part of Q-Bert's inspirations. Back to Miami, they could have shown Gigilo Tony, MC ADE, Magic Mike, etc. these DJ's from the 80's especially had a huge influence on scratching. They could have easily included a small portion showing the rise of Freestyle music. The last section of the documentary, could have then focused on the DJ's of today.
Overall, its decent, but falls short on a history lesson and us old schoolers wont' get much out of it.
some very good points .......2005-09-02
all of the above have good info, and I agree I would like to see a more varied mix, but show it to someone who has no idea about the scene, and they will be impressed.

Customer Reviews:
This DVD rocks..........2007-01-12
I'm a recording engineer working in Nashville. I've recently decided to improve my mixing skills. This DVD took me to the next level. I know what your thinking. "It's a lot of money!" Well the knowledge is well worth it. The video is over-produced but that's easy to over look. The bottom line is that Charles Dye explains things very clearly and makes it easy to learn some great techniques to add to your own music.
A good place to start: [...].......2006-11-06
Listen, if you are interested in this product, you can watch sample chapters at harddisklife.com. Here, you can not only gain some great information about engineering a mix, but you can also find out what exactly you're paying for. Simply visiting Amazon's product page won't tell you squat. So DONT take my word for it, read the reviews here, and then visit the website to make an informed buying decision!
I work full-time in a world-class recording facility in Midtown Manhattan. I'm an engineer. What does this mean? People pay me to make their records sound as good as humanly possible. And I reccommend Mix It Like a Record to aspiring, young engineers.
But again, go decide for yourself...
Very Helpful.......2006-05-31
I am a musician that records my own projects at home. I have read many different books and articles on mixing, but always find that the advice is too generalized or hard to imagine in my mind.
This DVD goes step by step through the mix for a single song with examples of how each track is handled and how each plug-in changes the sound. Beyond that, the DVD also has all the ProTools sessions that you can open yourself and work with on your own computer.
I have found the information invaluable and it has really helped me to see how a professional mixer - even one that the "old-timers" don't respect - puts a song together.
Avoid this like the plague!.......2006-05-08
This DVD is nothing more than a Pro Tools infomercial, and an unbearably pretentious one at that. At $30-$40 it might be worthwhile, but $134?!? It spends a lot of time focusing on basic concepts, while providing little information that will be of value to a professional looking to improve his craft. It promotes over-use of plug-ins and encourages beginners to think that a fully blown Pro Tools HD system is the ONLY way to go.
In my opinion, Charles Dye is NOT a mixer that beginning audio engineers should seek to emulate, as he has zero experience with analog techniques or systems other than Pro Tools, his work epitomizes much of what is wrong with today's pop sound, and he is laughed at by old-school engineers.
Incredible Information, Great value.......2006-04-28
I have been mixing independant artists for about 7 years. I have read books, sat in on other mixers sessions, asked questions on internet forums, you name it, anything to learn more I've done it. I can honestly say that I learned more in this one product than all that other stuff combined. Charles has done what, so far, no one else has been able to, by putting techniques, methods, and concepts as well as actual results ( audio samples) all in a dvd that you can access over and over. I belive that if any mixer at any level goes into this product with the intent to learn something they are going to be more than satisfied.

Great video.......2007-08-23
As a professional audio engineer for 27 years I still have not found a better visual presentation
on the subject of audio. Tom Lubin, in spite of his wacky attire, seems to nail every topic
right on the head. A must for any student in the audio industry!

A cute, light-hearted British adventure-comedy.......2006-01-17
Set in the 1930s, the Mixer (which consists of twelve 50-minute episodes) is a lighthearted 1992 British adventure-comedy starring Simon Williams (James Bellamy from Upstairs Downstairs) as Sir Anthony Rose, an aristocratic but somewhat cash-strapped English gentleman who augments his chronically depleted coffers by, in most cases, reuniting people (or institutions) with stolen goods or defrauded money--less a 10% commission for his services. He does this, however, clandestinely under the guise of "The Mixer", and he usually leaves a calling card to that effect either in place of the "loot" (for the criminals to find!) or with the returned goods (which are always returned anonymously--less his commission, of course!). "The Mixer" is aptly described, therefore, as a "cross between the Scarlet Pimpernel and Robin Hood." Occasionally, however, Sir Anthony has been known to get one over on the bad guys just for the sake of teaching them a lesson (so long as there's the chance of a profit, of course)!
Unfortunately for Sir Anthony, Scotland Yard (represented here by two humorously bumbling detectives) would just love to get their hands on "The Mixer," not realising he's actually on their side (and not realising that he is actually their acquaintance, Sir Anthony!). Throughout, Sir Anthony is assisted in his adventures by Paul (played to humorous perfection by Jeremy Clyde), his extremely capable valet, and their cases often take them out of England to locales on the continent--places like Monte Carlo, Vienna, and Paris, for example.
Sir Anthony has one weakness, however: his romantic friendship with a beautiful French chanteuse named Diane Delorme. Paul does not approve of Diane--and for good reason. The very mention of her name spells trouble. Though fond of Sir Anthony, she has some distinctly shady acquaintances, lacks his scruples, and doesn't hesitate to cross the line into ventures not entirely legitimate in her quest to augment her own coffers.
This is a cute series, and Sir Anthony is a charming character; personally, I really enjoyed seeing Simon Williams in a lighter role. Another nice thing is the fact that the boxed set appears to comprise the entire series (unlike some series which frustratingly leave one on a cliffhanger). In fact, the last episode is one of the cutest, and it really makes the series. Suffice it to say, it brings the series full circle in the most delightful way, giving it a very satisfying sense of closure.
