This unusual film begins deceptively, seeming to be yet another high-tech spy flick laden with futuristic weaponry, computers running top-secret software (with the requisite flashy graphics), and the talented actor Patrick Stewart slumming at the center of a nonsensical mishmash. Stewart's presence itself is something of a tip-off, but when his character is soon glimpsed hanging upside down from an exercise device, watching a wall of security cam monitors while quoting H.L. Mencken, it's apparent that this isn't just another action film with an outsized firearms budget. In fact, nothing much seems to be what it appears. Mace Sowell, Stewart's character, claims to be a retired intelligence agent, but his daughter, who doesn't believe a word of it, trots him around to a succession of skeptical shrinks. And while his daughter interviews potential caretakers for her apparently deranged father, Sowell is viewed through the patio doors of his lavish house taking rather acrobatic target practice in the back yard. There is the plot of a thriller in all of this, but make no mistake about it, the most entertaining aspect of this quirky film is watching Stewart have a wonderful time playing an endearing curmudgeon who might be the craziest man alive, or perhaps a totally rational man who really does know some secrets that put himself and others in danger. --Robert J. Extraordinarily empowering and heartbreakingly funny, the Sundance favorite V-DAY: UNTIL THE VIOLENCE STOPS chronicles how Eve Ensler's hit Broadway solo show The Vagina Monologues grew into V-Day, an international grassroots movement to stop violence against women and girls. The first of its kind, The Vagina Monologues has been widely recognized as "a celebration of women's sexuality and a condemnation of its violation" (The New York Times) and praised as "frank, humorous and moving" (Chicago Tribune). Over eight hundred cities around the world have participated in V-Day by staging benefit performances of The Vagina Monologues. From locales as diverse as New York, the Phillippines and Kenya, director Abby Epstein's UNTIL THE VIOLENCE STOPS features emotionally charged interviews and readings by everyday and celebrity women (including Rosie Perez, Salma Hayek, Rosario Dawson, Jane Fonda and LisaGay Hamilton), all of whom courageously reveal their intimate experiences and bond together to break the silence that surrounds abuse. More than just a group testimonial, UNTIL THE VIOLENCE STOPS is a moving celebration of community awareness that leaves us with the hope that change can happen. Shelter
Director: Anne Lewis Manufacturer: Cinequest ProductGroup: DVD Binding: DVD ASIN: B000JLTSGW Release Date: 2006-12-05 |
Description
Jury Award - Cinequest Film FestivalSet in Brooklyn's Bedford Stuyvesant, Shelter is the tale of three inner-city adolescents: the reclusive 16-year-old Ray (Ray Santiago, of Girlfight and Pinero) who tends his bedridden mother; his brother, Spider; and the very pregnant Maria.
When his mother dies, Ray becomes determined to get away. At the same time, Maria's drug problems get her thrown out of her sister's apartment, and she turns to Spider, only to find Ray gone. The two set out on a frantic search and eventually find Ray in a deserted Times Square alley. In a stolen car, the three drive aimlessly into the night. At daybreak, they find themselves on a desolate beach in a world of natural beauty that is both breathtaking and unfamiliar. In this magical setting, they attempt to form a surrogate family, after taking solace in a beach house. As Maria's pregnancy advances, she cocoons herself with Ray in a make-believe world of "playing house." But will their newfound haven survive the jealousies that arise among them?
Tough-minded and vibrant, Shelter mixes urban squalor with magical beauty for one of the most breathtakingly original stories of the year. In it, the power of friendship and love in the face of hardship transcend harsh realities, and the characters' search for a home becomes as moving as it is devastating.
