Unlike another certain celebrated HBO series, Rome's end will satisfy those swept up in its lavishly mounted spectacle and invested in the human dramas of the historical figures and fictional characters. Season 2 begins in the wake of Julius Caesar's assassination, and charts the power struggle to fill his sandals between "vulgar beast" Mark Antony (James Purefoy) and "clever boy" Octavian (Simon Woods), who is surprisingly named Caesar's sole heir. The series' most compelling relationship is between fellow soldiers and unlikely friends, the honorable Lucius Vorenus (Kevin McKidd) and Titus "Violence is the only trade I know" Pullo (Ray Stevenson), who somewhat reverse roles when Vorenus is overcome with grief in the wake of his wife's suicide. Season 2 considerably ups the ante in the rivalry between Atia (an Emmy-worthy Polly Walker), who is Antony's mistress, and Servilia (Lindsay Duncan) with attempted poisonings and sickening torture. Another gripping subplot is Vorenus's estrangement from his children, who, at the climax of the season opener are presumed slaughtered, but whose true fate may be even more devastating to the father who cursed them.

Rome's second season does not scrimp on the series' sex and violence, in both cases exceedingly brutal. But in this cauldron of treachery and betrayal, words, too, are vicious, as when a defiant Atia ominously tells Octavian's new wife, Livia, "Far better women that you have sworn to [destroy me]. Go look for them now." In writing Rome's epitaph, we come to praise this series, not to bury it. Although two seasons was not enough to establish a Rome empire, it stands as one of HBO's crowning achievements. --Donald Liebenson

Description

The year is 44 B.C. Julius Caesar has been assassinated and civil war threatens to destroy the Republic. In the void left by Caesar's demise, egos clash and numerous players jockey for position. The brutally ambitious Mark Antony attempts to solidify his power, aligning himself with Atia, but coming to blows with her cunning son Octavian, who has been anointed in Caesar's will as his only son and heir. Meanwhile Titus Pullo attempts to pull his friend Lucius Vorenus out of the darkness that has engulfed his soul in the wake of personal tragedy. For once again, the fates of these two mismatched soldiers seem inexorably tied to the fate of Rome itself.

5 out of 5 stars Absolutely faboulous........2007-09-17

Although this season was not as good as the first, it still retains all the suspense and drama. All of the characters come back, with the exception of Niobe and Caesar, and all of them experience a drastic personality change as the historic events unfold. A few of the mid-season episodes can get a bit slow, but once Octavian takes over, the games definitely begin.

5 out of 5 stars after ceasar.......2007-09-16

After watching the season 1s last episode, I was quite sure that that was the end of this series. Ceasar was dead. etc. If you are also feeling that way, all I can say is; watch the second season. And you'll be amazed. The production quality is unbelievable. The casting, the roleplay.. It's like they've placed a handycam in the ancient Rome.
Don't miss it.

5 out of 5 stars Rome - the Second Season.......2007-09-16

Excellent series! It is great just for the movie alone, but it has SO much more! It tells you about the time in Rome just after Julius Ceasar was killed. He the culture and population lived their normal lives. It gives you a window into living during that period of time. It actually uses real historical names whenever it was recorded. I could spend a week reviewing this 10 disc series.
I would highly recommend this series to almost anyone with natural interest in history. Even exciting for someone who loves to get involved in a great series where the people seem like your best friend or worst enemy.

5 out of 5 stars The Spectacular Conclusion to an Amazing Series.......2007-09-16

At the onset of the second season of "Rome" there are a lot of plot points to tie up. Gaius Julius Caesar is dead. Lucius Vorenus has lost his beloved wife and his children blame him for their mother's death. The bitter feud between Attia and Servilia is raging worse than ever, and the future of Rome's glorious reign of power is uncertain. Brutus and Cicero must legitimize their actions to the public in order to sieze control of the government, but Mark Antony refuses to back down without a fight. Further complicating matters is moody young Octavian, Caesar's rightful heir, who eventually throws his hat in the ring to claim the throne that he craves so desperately.

But it's not just politics at the forefront of "Rome" -- the true genius of the show is in its deeply resonant characters and the complexities of their ever-changing relationships as they careen through an historic and bloody time period. On this more personal level, Lucius Vorenus must work to rebuild his life and regain the trust of his children with the help of his loyal buddy, Titus Pullo (whose love life is more complicated than ever what with his beautiful wife Eirene plus the arrival of a lusty slave who pursues him with a fierce determination). Meanwhile, Octavian's decision to take full advantage of his inheritance puts quite the strain on his mother's relationship with Mark Antony, who is quite beguiled by Cleopatra after he lands in Egypt toward the end of the season (!).

I'll say nothing more of the plot for fear of giving anything away; just be assured that everything you loved about season one is present and accounted for: ample sex and violence (plus copius nude scenes from a lot of good looking actors and actresses), drama, intrigue, comedy, and impeccable craftsmanship. "Rome" is one of those rare products where every element comes together perfectly -- cinematography, costuming, make-up, writing, directing, and especially the acting. "Rome" features the most talented (and most criminally underrated) cast in television, from bit players to principles there isn't a wrong note to be found. I had been nervous that season 2 might falter without the magnetism of Ciaran Hinds' spectacular Caesar, but all of the other actors raise their game to fill in the void. James Purefoy amps up Antony's egotism to tragic hero levels; Ray Stevenson and Kevin McKidd perfect their already stellar chemistry as buddies-for-life Pullo and Vorenus; Kerry Condon, Tobias Menzies, Lyndsey Marshal and David Bamber steal more than their fair share of scenes as Octavia, Brutus, a petulant Cleopatra, and Cicero respectively; and Polly Walker and Lindsay Duncan positively smolder as they play out their wicked feud as Attia and Servilia (Walker's final moments in the finale are so delicious that she nearly steals the entire season out from under everyone else's feet).

So what are you waiting for? To watch an episode of "Rome" is to be absolutely hooked, so if you've already indulged in Rome - The Complete First Season you need to follow the series through to its awe-inspiring climax. It's a journey well worth your time and money.

Grade: A+

5 out of 5 stars ROME - If you havent seen it, BUY IT!.......2007-09-15

This is a fictionalized but AWESOME glimpse in to the Roman Empire during the time of Caesar and his heir...Octavius. If you like good story lines, this is for you. Really violent in some scenes, makes it more realistic to the times I bet, and the sex\nudity is toned-down from the first season but it is still there. All in all, a great mini-series.

Season 1
Twin Peaks devotees, who have kept the mystery alive on myriad Web sites, will jump at the chance to return to the spooky town that might just be the anti-Mayberry. Rarely syndicated, the Twin Peaks television series has lost none of its quirky and queasy power to get under your skin and haunt your dreams. So brew up a pot of some "damn fine coffee," dig into some cherry pie, and lose yourself in David Lynch and Mark Frost's murder mystery and soap opera, which unfolds, in one character's words, "like a beautiful dream and terrible nightmare all at once." Twin Peaks was a pop culture phenomenon for one season at least, until the increasingly bizarre twists and maddening teases so confounded audiences that they lost interest in just who killed Laura Palmer (Sheryl Lee). This series was a career peak for most of its eclectic ensemble cast, including Kyle MacLachlan as straight-arrow FBI Special Agent Dale Cooper, Michael Ontkean as local Sheriff Harry S. Truman, Sherilyn Fenn as bad girl Audrey Horne, Peggy Lipton as waitress Norma Jennings, and Catherine Coulson as the Log Lady. Alumni enjoying current success include Lara Flynn Boyle ("The Practice"), as good girl Donna Hayward, and Miguel Ferrer ("Crossing Jordan"), hilarious as forensics expert Albert Rosenfield (who has absolutely no "social niceties").--Donald Liebenson

Season 2
"Don't search for all the answers at once," says a giant appearing to FBI Agent Cooper (Kyle MacLachlan) in a vision. "A path is formed by laying one stone at a time." In Twin Peaks, that's easier said than done. Over the course of two seasons, that path went nowhere and everywhere. "Bureau guidelines, deductive technique, Tibetan method, and luck" don't cut it here. It also takes a little magic, which is what makes David Lynch and Mark Frost's bracingly original serial drama one of TV's ultimate trips, and still the stuff that fever dreams are made of. With the DVD release of season 2, die-hard Peakers can rekindle their obsession with this macabre, maddening, sinister, and surreal series set in the rural Pacific Northwest community whose bucolic surroundings hide "things dark and heinous." (If you're new to Twin Peaks, best to get the lay of the land by watching the brilliant feature-length pilot and the instant-cult-classic first season, which capture Twin at its peak.) Three main mysteries drive season 2. First, there's the still (!) unresolved murder of Laura Palmer (Sheryl Lee). Then, there's the question of who shot Cooper in the season 1 cliffhanger. And finally, ultimately: What about Bob? With its dream logic, bizarre behavior, and nightmare imagery, much of what transpires goes right by you. Some subplots (Sherilyn Fenn's sexpot Audrey held captive at the bordello, One-Eyed Jacks) are easier to latch on to than others (amnesiac Nadine believes she's an 18-year-old high schooler) And, yes, that's a pre-X-Files David Duchovny as Dennis/Denice, a transsexual DEA agent.

In Twin Peaks' second season, the truth is out there, but we are entering A Few Good Men territory. When Laura's killer is at last revealed in episode 16, no doubt many will not be able to handle the truth. The teases, red herrings, and out-and-out gonzo looniness will try the patience of viewers with a more conventional bent. But, as Cooper observes at one point, "All in all, [it's] a very interesting experience," with enough doppelgangers, allusions, pop-culture references, and in-jokes to keep bloggers buzzing. If, for example, you get any pleasure from recognizing Hank Worden, who played Mose in The Searchers, as "the world's most decrepit room service waiter," then Twin Peaks may just make you feel right at home. --Donald Liebenson

Twin Peaks: Fire Walk with Me

Taste That Famous Cherry Pie

The Recipe

8 inch Crust: 1-1/2 c. flour, 1/2 c. Crisco, 1/4 c. ice water
Mix flour and Crisco with fork. Add ice water. Mix with your hands. When blended, roll into ball and refrigerate overnight. To roll out: flour both rolling pin and flat surface, split ball in two, roll out 1/2 to fit pan and 1/2 for lattice.

Filling: 3 c. cherries (pitted, sour frozen); 1 c. water; 1c. Baker's sugar; 4 T. cornstarch; 1/8 t. salt
Thaw cherries at room temp and strain (yields 2 c. juice). Taste for sweetness, more/less sugar may be needed. Add 1 c. water to make 3 c. juice (reserve 1 c. juice for cornstarch mix). Dissolve cornstarch in 1 c. juice, stir with whip. Combine 2 c. juice, 2/3 c. sugar, salt, and bring to a boil. Add cornstarch mix, cook until clear, about 5 min. (if cooked to long, syrup gets gummy). Remove from heat, stir in 1/3 c. sugar (blend thoroughly). Pour mixture over cherries, fold with wooden spoon, cool (stir mix while cooling to prevent scum from forming on top). Pour mix in pie shell. Top completed pie with lattice crust.

Bake @ 425 degrees for 35-40 min.

5 out of 5 stars Hooray!.......2007-09-15

This is an excellent show and I'm very happy they are finally releasing a boxset. I didn't buy the season 1 and 2 boxsets because I knew that at some point a full boxset had to of been forthcoming (and no, I didn't even look it up). So I'm very glad that I waited!

3 out of 5 stars HUH! I just bought season 2!!!.......2007-09-13

This really hacks me off. They just released season 2 and now they want you to pay more for the entire series boxed set.
It wouldn't be so bad if season one and the pilot were readily available, but now that first season set is hard to find.
I suppose this has to do with all the copyright issues that delayed the season two release in the first place. Arrg!!
This is also why I stopped buying all those versions of LOTR and Star Wars. These greedy producers want to take the fans for as much as they can and usually, we fall for it

5 out of 5 stars Previously on Twin Peaks.......2007-09-13

When our company released the full 27 episode series on DVD we held an al day screening in a London Cinema (digital projection) for promotion of the video's availability. This was publicized in local papers and we were amazed at the costumes the audience showed up in. The location in Leicester Square is like New York's Times Square and bizarrely dressed Log Ladies, Mounties and "dead" Laura Palmers turned Twin Peaks into a Rocky Horror Show rival. So strong was the impression made that the London Times covered the story and our video release was nicely served. Historically speaking, the 27 episodes released on 10 Videos was a first for the video industry.

4 out of 5 stars A little late.......2007-09-13

I knew it was coming. I should have held off buying the second season, but the suspense was killing me so I purchased it when it came out this past April. I hope Paramount is providing plenty of extras to justify this deluxe edition other than a gold wrapping, as the pilot was included in the Special Edition Season One box set. If they had gotten their act together the first time and released it all in one box set, we wouldn't have had to go trough this ordeal.

It has been over six years since Season One was released on DVD by Republic Pictures, without the crucial pilot episode, which so galled Twin Peaks fans. The next year an attractive special edition was released in the UK, as well as other countries, that included the pilot as well as additional material. The box set has the ghostly image of Laura Palmer underneath her portrait. This is the edition I have. Then came another long wait before the Second Season was finally released early this year in a rather bland format by Paramount, with little in the way of extra features other than log lady intros.

During this time there have been various bootleg DVD sets as well as more polished releases of the complete series. Apparently the sticking point had been regaining the rights to the pilot, which Lynch had sold to Warner Home Video. Finally, American audiences will be able to view the complete set of episodes, including the pilot, in this Gold Box Edition. If Parmount, Universal and other studios want to avoid piracy they should get their act together and treat television series in their entirety, not release them piecemeal, with long waits in between seasons. It really made no sense at all in the case of Twin Peaks, which only ran for two seasons, a total of 29 episodes plus the two-hour pilot episode.

The Gold Box Edition is long overdue, but of course it comes with a hefty price tag. One can only hope that it is more polished than was the release of Season Two, finally bringing to rest the long running controversy surrounding the DVD release of this great television series.

5 out of 5 stars Quit your griping, it's finally here.......2007-09-11

Sure, I tracked down and shelled out for a region-free dubious-quality version of the pilot from some fly-by-night overseas company. And some of you bought the first bare bones season one box set. But we all knew this would be coming some day (as sure as David Lynch needs coffee and pie money). And we'd be all over it. So, just bask in the short term master hunter victory of having bagged that stuff early, get over it, and look forward to the all frills edition. And light up (because that's the only way you'll ever understand this thing).

The medical drama's second season could be diagnosed as bipolar; in other words, it got much worse and much better at the same time. Whiny, self-involved surgical intern Meredith Grey (Ellen Pompeo), arguably the weakest spot in the otherwise likeable ensemble, had already left viewers annoyed. But season two, in which Meredith coped with being dumped by her married McDreamy (a.k.a. neurosurgeon Derek, a.k.a. Patrick Dempsey) by excessive drinking, sleeping around, gazing like a sad puppy and--unforgivable!--breaking the heart of longtime admirer/friend George (the cuddly T.R. Knight), could have alienated audiences for good. (Seriously, sometimes you want to shake the girl and feed her some cookies.) Thankfully, what Meredith's storyline threatened to derail was held together by some emotional episodes, including "Into You Like a Train," in which a pair of strangers are impaled together on a metal pole, and "Much Too Much," featuring a mother's quintuplets in critical condition. But the standout show that turned Grey's Anatomy into a television force came with the January 2006 post-Super Bowl episode, a two-parter involving a "code black" lockdown when a live bomb is housed inside a patient.

Romance also remained key to the staff at Seattle Grace: Steely Cristina (Golden Globe winner Sandra Oh) softens, to her great dismay, as her relationship with Dr. Burke (Isaiah Washington) gets serious; Izzie (Katherine Heigl) pairs up, then breaks up, with Alex (Justin Chambers, the villain of the cast if you had to name one) before falling in love with flirty, tender heart patient Denny (Jeffrey Dean Morgan). Derek and estranged wife Addison (Kate Walsh, who somehow managed to win over Meredith-McDreamy fans despite being the Other Woman) make attempts at fixing their marriage, and Dr. Bailey (Chandra Wilson, easily a standout) tries to balance a medical career with mommyhood. Even George finds a new love with orthopedic surgeon Callie (Sara Ramirez). The season wraps up with a weeper of a two-part finale, set at the hospital during a "prom" (it's complicated). But with the fancy gowns and tuxes, tears and romantic tension, leading to a crossroads for Meredith and Derek, you can bet the episodes are a delight for any Grey's fan. The show also continues to rely heavily on narration (not a good thing) and soundtracks (a good thing), using tracks from artists before they hit it big (KT Tunstall, Brandi Carlisle, Snow Patrol).

On the DVD

Four of the episodes get an extended treatment, though the tag line "too steamy for television!" is overreaching a bit. Oh is the only actor to turn up on a commentary, which is otherwise just the writers and producers congratulating each other. Walsh turns up the charm in "The Doctors are In," in which characters answer fans' questions, but Chambers appears noticeably drab and disinterested. Despite "Uncut" being in the title, the special features aren't anything you'll be watching again and again. Save that rewind button for the show itself. --Ellen A. Kim

This show is ADDICTIVE. I live/work in Iraq so I never have seen the show. I saw a few reviews and decided to check it out. I was totally impressed. I felt like I found an addiction that I could not break. I am waiting on Season 3 to arrive.

4 out of 5 stars Compelling, soapy dramedy.......2007-08-13

I normally go for sci-fi or action. I never watch soap operas. But Grey's Anatomy is a show my wife and I both love. The number and frequency of relationships is unrealistic, as is the fact that every patient seems to open up their deepest feelings to interns they just met. But it's funny and dramatic and chock-full of heart-wrenching, tear-jerking moments as our young heroes save (or fail to save) the patient-du-jour. I highly recommend you give this show a shot. If you're a native Seattle-ite you'll also enjoy the gratuitous exterior shots of Seattle landmarks.

The DVDs are definitely the way to go. No waiting for next week's episode, plus, several of the episodes have extended versions on the DVD.

In the second season of Showtime's Dead Like Me, teen grim reaper George (Ellen Muth) returns just as she left the first--dead. (Technically, undead.) That isn't about to change, but some things will. In season premiere "Send in the Clown," she'll get a promotion at the Happy Time temp agency (a dead ringer for Office Space's soul-sucking cubicle maze). Meanwhile, Roxy (Jasmine Guy), a tough-talking fellow reaper, will make the move from meter maid to police officer. After all, even reapers have to eat.

There are other changes. George's parents, Joy (Cynthia Stevenson) and Clancy (Greg Kean), finally throw in the towel on their foundering marriage. The other reapers experience their share of good and bad luck. Sweet, if narcissistic Daisy (Laura Harris) finds religion, larceny, and love (in that order), while bad boy Brit Mason (Callum Blue) gives up the bottle only to take it up again and no-nonsense reaper boss Rube (Mandy Patinkin) spends most of the season trying to track down someone from his mortal past.

There were 15 episodes in the second season. Guest stars include Michael Des Barres as a washed-up rocker ("In Escrow"), Barbara Barrie as George's free-spirited grandmother ("Rites of Passage," "The Escape Artist"), and Eric McCormack as a cocky TV producer who falls for Daisy (three episodes, starting with "Death Defying"). Unfortunately, 2004 wouldn't turn out to be creator Bryan Fuller's lucky year. Despite fan devotion, critical praise, and Emmy nominations, both of his distinctively quirky dark comedies, Wonderfalls and Dead Like Me, would not be renewed--but at least the latter made it to the end of the year. --Kathleen C. Fennessy

Description

Proving that "reapers are anything but grim company" (Cleveland Plain Dealer), this "deliciously dark comedy about the afterlife" (Newsday) returns for "a second season as strong as its first" (Philadelphia Daily News). Thanks to breakout star Ellen Muth's prickly charm, Dead Like Me has "an amusingly odd and touching energy all its own" (Detroit News and Free Press). After more than a year as a grim reaper, George (Muth) has realized that being a teenager in the afterlife is as complex as in real life. There are still unrequited crushes, agonizing dilemmas and the occasional bad attitude. Along with her kooky "co-reapers" Mason, Daisy, Roxy and Rube, George struggles to collect souls while managing her own awkward development…into an adult reaper!Disc One"Send in the Clown," "The Ledger," "Ghost Story," "The Shallow End"Disc Two"Hurry," "In Escrow," "Rites of Passage," "The Escape Artist"Disc Three"Be Still My Heart," "Death Defying," "Ashes to Ashes," "Forget Me Not" Disc Four"Last Call," "Always," "Haunted," Bonus Material

5 out of 5 stars Fabulous.......2007-09-11

One criteria for the greatness of a movie is how often I can watch it. The second is that if I stumble across it while channel surfing, will I stop and watch. Dead Like Me is one of those shows.

5 out of 5 stars This show is on of the great ones.......2007-09-05

I don't know what to say that others or the product itself cannot say for itself. The show has great characters portrayed by the perfect actors and actresses, and it was over too soon. The storyline was intense and yet humorous, I think this is a great way to understanding death while keeping a neutral point-of-view. Two words: Daisy Adair.

5 out of 5 stars Addicting Series.......2007-09-04

I caught this originally on the SCI-FI channel. The story line is great and the acting is wonderful. I started watching it and now my whole family are addicted to it. I don't see why it is not still on TV. It reminds me a little of Doogy Houser(not sure of the spelling). It is more about a teenager growing into an adult and handling life, except she is dead. Each of the characters grow in the episodes and their development provides good stories.

5 out of 5 stars Finally a tv show with heart...then they cancelled it!.......2007-08-27

What can I possibly say that the other reviews haven't? Only that Dead Like Me is the best series that Showtime had ever ran. All the characters had wonderful chemistry, the directing was awesome, the acting was great and the story line touched your heart everytime! The problem here is Showtime did not give this show time to take off, it was advertised very little if any at all. My husband and I came upon it by accident when we had insomnia and we were since hooked. If you haven't seen Dead Like Me rent it, then buy the seasons. They only get funnier!

5 out of 5 stars Dead Like Me, We Hardly Knew Thee.......2007-08-19

What a great show this was. Though I never had Showtime, I caught an occasional episode of the first season, and bought the DVD for the Second Season. Though it is sad to see the show go, this set was a great way to end it.

We get some more information on most of the characters, as they develop into true characters, and not just background "cooky pals". The show was witty, funny, odd, irreverent, and will truly be missed!

The 2 seasons are well worth the money and time!

What was in the Hatch? The cliffhanger from season one of Lost was answered in its opening sequences, only to launch into more questions as the season progressed. That's right: Just when you say "Ohhhhh," there comes another "What?" Thankfully, the show's producers sprinkle answers like tasty morsels throughout the season, ending with a whopper: What caused Oceanic Air Flight 815 to crash in the first place? As the show digs into more revelations about its inhabitant's pasts, it also devotes a good chunk to new characters (Hey, it's an island; you never know who you're going to run into.) First, there are the "Tailies," passengers from the back end of the plane who crashed on the other side of the island. Among them are the wise, God-fearing ex-drug lord Mr. Eko (standout Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje); devoted husband Bernard (Sam Anderson); psychiatrist Libby (Cynthia Watros, whose character has more than one hidden link to the other islanders); and ex-cop Ana Lucia (Michelle Rodriguez), by far the most infuriating character on the show, despite how much the writers tried to incur sympathy with her flashback. Then there are the Others, first introduced when they kidnapped Walt (Malcolm David Kelley) at the end of season one. Brutal and calculating, their agenda only became more complex when one of them (played creepily by Michael Emerson) was held hostage in the hatch and, quite handily, plays mind games on everyone's already frayed nerves. The original cast continues to battle their own skeletons, most notably Locke (Terry O'Quinn), Sun (Yunjin Kim) and Michael (Harold Perrineau), whose obsession with finding Walt takes a dangerous turn. The love triangle between Jack (Matthew Fox), Kate (Evangeline Lilly) and Sawyer (Josh Holloway), which had stalled with Sawyer's departure, heats up again in the second half. Despite the bloating cast size (knocked down by a few by season's end) Lost still does what it does best: explores the psyche of people, about whom "my life is an open book" never applies, and cracks into the social dynamics of strangers thrust into Lord of the Flies-esque situations. Is it all a science experiment? A dream? A supernatural pocket in the universe? Likely, any theory will wind up on shaky ground by the season's conclusion. But hey, that's the fun of it. This show was made for DVD, and you can pause and slow-frame to your heart's content. Just try and keep that head-spinning to a minimum.

On the DVD

Commentaries by various cast members and producers reveal little other than the occasional easter egg (the Dharma logo on the shark fin, Walt's mumbling translating to "Don't push the button; the button is bad" backwards). But disc seven opens with an eerie Hanso Foundation instructional video, leading you to eight hours of bonus features, including cast members' own theories, deleted scenes, and featurettes on specific episodes. It's all well and good for Lost fanatics, but if you want the cream of the crop, check out: "Lost Connections," an interactive feature that reveals how all the islanders are actually linked (for instance, one of the officers who captured Sayid during the Gulf War is Kate's father); a Channel UK promo for the show directed by David LaChappelle in which cast members suck in their cheeks and, dressed in evening wear, tango in slow motion as if in a Calvin Klein ad (it has to be a joke, right?); and "The World According to Sawyer," which strings together each of the un-PC nicknames and pop culture references spewed by Holloway's character. Favorites include "Chewie" for Jin and "Ponce de Leon" for Ana Lucia. It's by far the cherry on top of a sweet dessert. --Ellen A. Kim

5 out of 5 stars Finding Lost.......2007-09-09

I just wanted to say that the only sure way of getting it is to own Season l and 2 and being able to rewatch it before Season 3 comes out in December. There is so much in this series, so many tales and so many people to love and dislike, so many personalities with proof that no one person is perfect. The only one of the so-called good characters that I think is a self-centered persons is Michael. I love my children as much as anyone but I wouldn't kill my friends to save them. I would trust them to help me.

I like the interaction of these people, one way or another which they wouldn't expect to normally happen, which shows that the world is much smaller than we think, even without modern technology.

5 out of 5 stars What u should expect in LOST 2?.......2007-09-05

Obvianting all negative review from this season... It's LOST, Is a great series, an adicting series... You should own all season! But reviews have some sense... this's the most slower and sometimes boring season... but you had to see it!

1 out of 5 stars PLEASE Rescue These People!.......2007-09-01

Season One had me hooked, but Season Two was agony. I found the suspense simplistic and contrived by merely having the characters behave stupidly in the face of danger; a very frustrating thing to watch. And by the end of the season, not a single character retained their heroic qualities as their flashbacks and/or sadistic behavior on the island revealed less than admirable qualities for each castaway. "Cast away." Now that's a good idea of what to do with this boxed set...

5 out of 5 stars Best show out there.......2007-08-23

Honestly, this show has everything a viewer would want. But most importantly, the acting, which i think is essential in selling a show, is pretty darn good here, from everyone. I truly am hooked, and have never felt this way about any other show before. Addicted cant even describe it. It is the best hour of tv out there and nobody is allowed to disturb me while I am watching it.

5 out of 5 stars Hooked.......2007-08-19

I avoided Lost for a long time as I didn't want to invest in a serial without knowing there would be some conclusion. We know there are at least three seasons of Lost, and so I bought season 1 and 2. I got caught up in both seasons. I am impressed with the writing, the dialog and formula on how each character is featured and we learn more and more about the mystery as we go along. Beyond the vehicle of mystery, you watch the development of amazing actors and writing developing the characters. As a small example, the pregnant woman who normally falls into a sweet daisy flower category, was kidnapped and later escaped. She lost her memory of the incident, and had an episode where she went back to the place where she was abducted. You could finally see her determination and strength to face the demons of her kidnapping. We learn more about the island through each episode along with the cross-stories and history that tie all these unrelated characters together. You can see the potential in characters development beyond the stereotypes they fall into. Things hop along with great action and story development and perspectives. No character is sacred and there are some shocking storylines. There is this mystery set up about the island so I believe there is always potential that noone dies and is mysteriously healed! The island itself is a character and is so beautiful in the locations filmed. It is interesting to see this grove of trees where the characters hide a lot get thinner and thinner. There are some inside jokes played in this season Charlie gets lines about, such as, "Didn't you see the polar bear?" I love the development of the Korean couple and how dynamic (and hot!) they are. The Korean husband without his shirt can rival Sawyer. There is brutality and sweetness in this couple's story and in all the stories. I like the ending of Season 2 how they turned one major character and made him deeper and yet you could understand the dilemma. Season 2 does leave the innocence of the first season and delve into the mystery deeper. You meet other survivors and new characters and clear up some clues left from Season 1 as you continue. Movie-quality acting, storytelling, and special effects. Exciting and dynamic. Humorous and sweet. Shocking and brutal. I am hooked. I love this show.

5 out of 5 stars Courtroom drama at it's best!.......2007-08-24

For nine seasons Raymond Burr ruled the courtroom in "Perry Mason." After serving for almost two decades as a "heavy" in Hollywood noir films, Burr was cast against type as the thoughtful, dogmatic Mason. Burr is surrounded with a first-class supporting cast here -- Barbara Hale as faithful "Della Street," William Hopper as the wise-cracking, woman chasing P.I. "Paul Drake," William Talman as long-suffering D.A. "Hamilton Burger," and Orson Welles favorite Ray Collins as "Lt. Tragg." Along the way you'll enjoy seeing classic T-Bird's and Corvette's, girls in tight-fitting sweaters, and dozens of plot twists and turns. In fact, you won't totally know "who done it" until Perry sweats a confession out of some oily character or shapely dame with about three minutes remaining -- the way crime dramas are supposed to play out. In this set you'll catch terrific character actors Hugh Marlowe, Leo Gordon, Ken Lynch, John Agar, Mala Powers, John Anderson, Dick Foran, R.G. Armstrong, and crooner Frankie Laine. Snap up more of "Perry" today!

5 out of 5 stars Verdict is guilty, of wanting this dvd.......2007-08-20

Sfter getting the three previous sets, I heartily and eagerly await this arrival. The writing is still crisp with great plots and some excellent banter. You just know Perry is going to win, but what trick or strategy will he use to save his innocent client? The actors whon appeared on this show made these characters their own. As Hamilton Burger and Inspector Tragg, William Talman and Ray Collins are perfect. It is hard to believe that Raymond Burr first wanted the role of Burger. Who better than Barbara Hale and William Hopper as Della Street and Paul Drake. Throw in performances by some old time stars, suchas Robert Armstrong from "King Kong", and new up and coming stars like Barbara Eden or Angie Dickinson and you have a real slice of television history. This is the godfather of the lawyer drama.

5 out of 5 stars Slow but sure..........2007-07-26

The long awaited Season 2, Vol. 2 is finally in the works. Since this is surely a big money maker for Paramount, it would be nice if they would hurry production somewhat, but "Better late than never"...

When the debut season of The Hills ended, Lauren had passed up the opportunity to work in Paris for the summer to live in a beach house with her vaguely Neanderthal-ish boyfriend Jason. Flash forward to the second season of MTV's hit reality series--which aired from January through April 2007. Lauren and Jason break up, and you can see the wistfulness in her eyes as her friend Whitney (who got the Paris gig after Lauren turned it down) talks about what an amazing summer she had. Though the conceit of this Laguna Beach spin-off was to have Lauren at its core, her friends are as instrumental to the drama as she is. There's Audrina, whom roomies Lauren and Heidi ostracize for no other reason than they can. As for Heidi, Lauren's supposed best friend, she cares more about fame and men than her friends. As entertaining as this 3-disc, 12-episode set is, this series also reveals the worst caricatures about mean girls and young women. They will gossip about whoever isn't around and will lie to their friends, apparently oblivious to the fact that they will be caught in their lies when the show airs on TV. And sadly, these girls fault each other--rather than their cheating men--for their tumultuous relationships.

If Lauren is the determined and good rich girl, Heidi is the manipulative bad seed. She scares a boyfriend into thinking she's pregnant to test how much he loves her and then maintains her innocence when he gets angry at her deception. She lies to Lauren about what another girl said. There are times you may empathize with her, but those few moments are negated by her stupidity when it comes to her slimy boyfriend Spencer, whose claim to fame is hanging around any place (and any one) where there is a camera crew. He even sets up Lauren with his one-dimensional friend Brody (son of Olympian Bruce Jenner) to ensure that he's assured of even more camera time. Spencer guilts Heidi into doing what he wants, but she is guilty of lacking a spine when it comes to standing up to him. Spencer actually is an honorary mean girl, cattier and more jealous than any of the women on the show. Last season's finale left viewers wondering whether Lauren would work towards her future and go to Paris, or remain in the past and live with Jason. The second year ends with another life-altering decision--this time for Heidi. Will she move in with Spencer, whom she has already told that she is too young to make such a commitment, or will she remain as Lauren's roomie and BFF? There is a champagne toast and pizza celebration for a pair of roommates in the final episode that will make most fans of the show very pleased. --Jae-Ha Kim

Product Description

5 out of 5 stars My guilty pleasure ;->.......2007-08-18

I don't know why I love this show so much - but I do. It's strangely addictive and for some reason, I can't stop watching it. Yes, it's trashy, but you kind of want to keep seeing what's going on in their immature lives because you realise that you are actually normal and well adjusted. There are 12 episodes, and I watched them in record time.
Here's the breakdown of each episode:
1 - OUT WITH THE OLD. After a rocky summer with her boyfriend Jason, Lauren decides to break it off and returns to Teen Vogue to face her unhappy boss. Heidi finds herself in trouble with a guy both she and Audrina are dating.
2 - WHEN YOU LEAST EXPECT IT. Lauren goes on her first date since breaking up with Jason and is tested at work when she's asked to work a fashion show. Heidi has a life changing secret she must tell her boyfriend.
3 - THE BEST NIGHT EVER. When an uninvited Audrina shows up at Heidi's birthday, she learns Heidi's not ready to forgive and forget. Lauren, determined to focus on work, falls for the charms of the new guy in her life, Brody Jenner.
4 - WHO DO YOU TRUST? Audrina tells Heidi about Spencer's cheating ways, but Heidi is doubtfull until she sees it for herself. Lauren continues to wonder whether she is ready for a relationship.
5 - ONE BIG INTERUPTION. Heidi takes a break from Spencer but finds herself missing him more than she'd like. Lauren has to plan a Teen Vogue dinner but takes a backseat to super-intern Emily from New York.
6 - YOU HAVE CHOSEN. When Lauren tells Heidi what she really thinks about Spencer, Heidi must choose between her best friend and her boyfriend.
7 - WITH FRIENDS LIKE THESE. Lauren realizes she can't trust her best friends after Heidi hooks Jen up with Brody.
8 - ENOUGH IS ENOUGH. Audrina takes Lauren out on a blind double date, while Lauren and Heidi grow farther apart. And a photo shoot with a Vogue stylist makes Whitney impatient for more responsibility.
9 - NEW YEAR, NEW FRIENDS. Spencer asks Heidi to move in with him, but Heidi doesn't know what to do or how to tell her roomate, Lauren.
10 - APOLOGY NOT ACCEPTED. Lauren's 21st birthday is full of surprises when Heidi and Audrina throw her a party and Jen reaches out to make peace with her.
11 - EVERYBODY FALLS. With a new job on the line, Whitney stumbles in her biggest opportunity with Teen Vogue. Spencer goes too far when he pressures Heidi to leave Lauren and move in with him.
12 - GOODBYE FOR NOW. In this season finale, tension comes to a head as Heidi makes her final decision about moving in with Spencer. Lauren looks to Audrina to fill the void left by her best friend, and Whitney flies to New York City to interview for a full-time job with Teen Vogue.
All of this takes up 2 discs, and on the third disc are some extras. There are some deleted scenes and cast interviews among other things and it's entertaining to watch too (especially the remixes). The nicest and prettiest girl is Audrina. The most immature and idiotic is Heidi.
I don't know why the lives of rich spoilt girls who probably have mommy and daddy paying their rent should be so appealing, but it is somehow. I love the shots of Los Angeles throughout the show and love seeing some of the places they go to - like nightclubs, restaurants and cafes.
If you are looking for a day's worth of trashy entertainment, then look no further. This is great to watch and I'm already hanging out for season 3.

Solving crimes and putting the perps behind bars is Steve McGarrett's bag. Why, he says so himself, and in so many words, in the very first of the 24 episodes collected in this five-disc set comprising the complete second season (1969-70) of Hawaii Five-0. Portrayed by Jack Lord, and described by no less an authority than the New York Times as "a model of steadfast decency" and "beyond cool but still so square he could have been Lawrence Welk's cop brother-in-law," McGarrett is the leader of the islands' crack, four-man police unit, and as usual, he has his hands full. Perhaps that's why the man has no discernible sense of humor and only the merest suggestion of a social life. Between keeping his famous hair in order, delivering stern lectures about right and wrong to clueless lowlifes, and, as he puts it in another Second Season episode, constantly worrying "about a world without law and justice… where no one gives a damn about anything," who has time for such trivialities? This season finds McGarrett and cohorts Danno (James McArthur), Kono (Zulu), and Chin Ho (Kam Fong) dealing with the usual complement of sleaze: murderers, gamblers, druggies, prostitutes, insurance scammers, low-rent terrorists, and so on. But Hawaii Five-0 offers its share of weirdness as well. In "Forty Feet High and It Kills!", Red Chinese uber-criminal Wo Fat (Khigh Dhiegh) and his crew orchestrate a fake tsunami warning so they can kidnap a brilliant scientist (an amusing performance by Will Geer) and force him to conduct genetic-tampering experiments designed to create a master race. In the fairly ridiculous "King Kamehameha Blues," a group of young folks steal the legendary king's robe from a museum, just to show they can; it's a measure of McGarrett's ultra-hardline attitude that the governor's offer of amnesty to the thieves if they'll return the precious garment really sticks in his righteous craw. And in "The Singapore File," McGarrett travels overseas in order to accompany a comely murder witness back to Honolulu; though tempted by her charms, he's far too scrupulous to indulge in any extra-curriculars while on the job (and Steve McGarrett is always on the job). Hawaii Five-0's other elements are a mixed bag. As always, the Hawaiian scenery is gorgeous. Morton Stevens' theme song remains one of the best ever, and much of the other music, especially the jazzy stuff, is also terrific. However, the show isn't big on either action or tension; too many scenes are slow and talky. And in the final year of the '60s, when men walked on the moon and Woodstock and Altamont marked the respective high and low points of the hippie movement, its depiction of the counterculture is laughably square; it's as if the entire decade barely happened. The box set includes brief, previous-week promos for each episode, but no other bonus material. --Sam Graham

5 out of 5 stars Hawaii Five-o season 2.......2007-09-10

I will rate this dvd on the merits of it's production quality alone. Since I have been a huge fan of the show for many years I will refrain from writing about the episodes since my opinion would be skewed in favor of almost anything Five-o or the late, great Jack Lord.

I am very impressed with the artwork for starters. The packaging is better than I expected and the video quality is stunning. All the colors reproduce so well. It is in fact better than any Five-o I have been able to view before. There are subtitles which are not really needed becuase the audio is perfect, but that I find myself using anyway.

Much Praise and thanks to whomever was responsible for getting this fantastic program on dvd and out to the public! If you have never watched Hawaii Five-o before please give it a try. Great scenery, wonderful trips back to the hippie days and of course commercial free drama that should capivate young and old alike. My 13 year old and 10 year old both love the show. AAA+++

Also on the team are Elle Greenaway (Lola Glaudini), an agent with a background in sexual offenses; Special Agent Derek Morgan (Shemar Moore), an expert on obsessional crimes; Special Agent Dr. Spencer Reid (Matthew Gray Gubler), a classically misunderstood genius whose social IQ is as low as his intellectual IQ is high; and Jennifer "JJ" Jareau, (AJ Cook), a confident young agent who acts as the unit liaison for the team. Each member brings his or her own area of expertise to the table as they pinpoint predators' motivations and identify their emotional triggers in the attempt to stop them.

5 out of 5 stars CRIMINAL MINDS GREATEST SHOW EVER 5 STARS !!.......2007-09-16

i have to say that criminal minds is the greatest show and it is very disappointing that this will be the last season with mandy leaving the show it is not going to be the same. i know that people come and go but that what makes the show so great is because it is a great cast. Let be honest he is the whole show. i love the story plots and great crime tales. i am so excited about seeing season 2 that i want this to be my birthday gift to myself. i know that tv show have been a lot better to watch i have to say but for anyone who is reading this i will be totally honest and this is no Bs....buy the first two seasons of this show it is a must have!! i know that season 3 is a worry but i say give it a chance for me i am going to stick with the first two seasons. i am the kind of person that once the main character leaves then the show doesnt get as interesting just like with millennum and csi ny. i only stuck with the first seasons because they were the best. so right i have to say that criminal minds is a greatest crime show you will not be disappointed and most of all if you like a great thinking kind of show and now like those csi shows where they are just telling you left and right how the crime is being done. i like to be able to think for myself if the show is any good.

3 out of 5 stars Great show, but loss of High Definition on DVD is BAD.......2007-09-06

Criminal minds is well shot in the 16x9 HD format and shows the talent of the cameraman, producer, and director well. I enjoy it on a 10 foot wide screen with a 1920x1080 projector - the high definintion picture is so sharp and clear you can see the dental work when the actors speak.

Regretably, this DVD is standard NTSC, which will be turned off in February of 2009 by the FCC. It completely lacks the resolution of the original showing over the air on the network.

Why would someone buy a 4x3 image of a 16x9 show and loose half the content of the original picture in detail or cropping? These TV shows shown in high definition need to be sold in high definition disc formats. Alot of people may not have had HDTVs when they were originally shown on TV and may want to see them in their original production quality, not some cut down fuzzy image.

Once you have seen the miracle image of HDTV, the old DVD player is headed for the trash. With Toshiba's HD-DVD player down to $242 today, HD DVDs are affordable, available, and cost competitive with their old counterparts. In 2009 people will be purchasing HD sets as the alternative will be gone. These discs are thus already obsolete, which is unfortunate.

3 out of 5 stars Finding Criminal minds.......2007-08-23

I just barely found this show and the whole profiling and serial killer thing is very interesting but the show needs work. AJ Cook is the real reason I started to watch. But they need to do more character developement and this whole mens club thing is annoying. I want to see more of garcia and especially JJ. Again I love AJ cook and she deserves to have more screen time. But I'm starting to like the show more and more and now that Mandy patikan is gone I think it will get even better. Can't wait for the new season so I can see My Girl!

5 out of 5 stars Not your average cop show........2007-08-01

This show has a excellent cast with great writing. It is not your everyday CSI or shield but a look into the mind of the criminal and how the good guys catch them. I really started getting into this show after my favorite show of all time (Dead like me) stopped production and I think between the actors and writing this show has many more years of great stories. CBS really does something different with this show and let me just say I love Garcia!
