A by-the-numbers action flick featuring a stern Arnold Schwarzenegger, Raw Deal has all the traditional traits of the genre. Schwarzenegger is a disgraced former FBI agent who winds up as sheriff of a backwater Southern town. He is given a chance to reclaim his job when the head of the Bureau offers him reinstatement if he'll go undercover to capture the mob boss responsible for killing his son. Schwarzenegger must get close enough to gain the trust of the gangster without being discovered as a mole, while gathering enough evidence to take him down. One of Schwarzenegger's early films, in which he honed his persona, Raw Deal offers up the usual quotient of gun battles and tough talk, with a trace of self-deprecating humor from its star, making it reasonably worthwhile entertainment. --Robert Lane

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars great classic schwarzenegger movie.......2007-09-10

it was one of Arnold's breakthrough performances outside of terminator. i love this movie, if your a fan of Arnold's you wont get disapointed.

3 out of 5 stars Modest But Enjoyable Schwarzenegger Film.......2007-04-03

Raw Deal was one of Arnold Schwarzenegger's first films in his successful eading man career. Therefore, one can forgive him for making this kind of film because it was so early in his career. People were still getting used to the idea of a heavily accented Austrian as the new action hero on the block. Therefore, almost anything he did would seem novel.

Arnold plays a former FBI agent who was accused of wrongdoing, and ends up leaving the bureau and becoming a small-town southern sheriff. His bureau mentor, played by Darren McGavin, comes to help asking him to work undercover to bring down Chicago's top mobster, who in the midst of a turf war with a Jewish gangster (played by Steven Hill of Law and Order fame). Thinking that this could restart his old career, Arnold agrees, and ends up in the middle of the turf war, trying not to be exposed and running afoul of the hood's chief lieutenant, played by Robert Davi.

This movie is not groundbreaking, but solid and entertaining in its own way. You will definitely get your share of action from Raw Deal and shouldn't feel cheated.

4 out of 5 stars "Who do you think I look like? Dirty Harry?".......2007-03-12

SPOILERS throughout.

No, RAW DEAL isn't one of the Governator's best flicks, not by a long shot. But it's not his worst either (ever cringe thru JINGLE ALL THE WAY, JUNIOR, or COLLATERAL DAMAGE?). Having been released on the heels of the high octane, vastly entertaining COMMANDO, RAW DEAL suffers from the inevitable comparison. This film does have quite a bit to offer Schwarzenegger fans, but, let's be real, it's not as good as COMMANDO. But is RAW DEAL worth watching? Definitely. Is it worth purchasing? I believe so. I bought it. But, then again, I'm an old fan of our muscled Austrian. Shucks, I even voted for him.

As early as 1986 - when RAW DEAL came out - at the beginnings of his Hollywood career as he was still developing what would become his trademark cinematic identity, Schwarzenegger was even then charismatic enough to turn many an action fan's head. That he had a certain flair for droll one-liners was an unlooked-for bonus. In fact, I believe that his wry sense of humor and the implied intelligence that went with that was the decider in making him the overwhelming box office action king over the likes of Stallone, Seagal, and Norris. And Arnold was savvy enought to capitalize on his advantage. He had a firm grasp of his talents and rarely stepped outside his purview. In his role of Sheriff Mark Kaminsky, Arnold is well within his limited acting range. RAW DEAL makes no pretense about what it is: a slam-bang action movie that directly traverses from Point A to Point B and is jam-packed with auto carnage, blazing bullets and thudding fists, all the while showcasing Mr. "I'll Be Back" (a catchphrase which I don't think he says in this film).

The plot: Mark Kaminsky (Arnold Schwarzenegger) is an ex-FBI agent now exiled into sheriffing in a small, nowhere town and saddled with an embittered wife. A promise of possible reinstatement from an old FBI colleague with a personal agenda convinces Kaminsky to infiltrate the Chicago crime syndicate and try to tear it apart from within; if possible, he's given the added task of unearthing the mole who's been selling out the FBI. Kaminsky stages his own death, slicks back his hair, and dons his double-breasted threads. In his attempt to get noticed by the mob, he makes a splashy showing at a mob gambling joint and, from there, rapidly works his way up the criminal hierarchy, occasionally tearing off chunks of mafia flesh.

Is there much violence in RAW DEAL? You bet your arse, there is. Nowadays, when our film action stars all seem to practice fancy martial arts, popping in an Arnold flick in a dvd player is a bit like time travelling to the primitive, old school ways of villain smiting. Arnold never was that limber nor did he ever somersault in the air and execute a graceful roundhouse kick to the head. His style is akin to a relentless runaway train as he uses his monumental strength and power to subdue his opponents via wrestling holds and throws and that gool ol' American standby: the punch to the face. And if he can't hit you or kick you, for sure he doesn't have any compunctions about shooting you up full of lead. And then, of course, he'll submit the coup de gras: a witty punchline at your expense. In RAW DEAL, he uses his "techniques" to traumatize villains in mall clothing stores, gambling casinos, gravel pits, and mafia headquarters, the last venue being where he really launches into Terminator mode. You see, in his own fashion, Arnold does have a certain implacable panache.

The acting? It's decent. Schwarzenegger is Schwarzenegger which means that Schwarzenegger isn't Anthony Hopkins. In terms of acting, Schwarzenegger isn't even Thelma Hopkins. But, here, he's ably upheld by his supporting cast, the most recognizable of whom are Darren McGavin, MURPHY BROWN's Joe Regalbuto, and the ever untrustworthy Robert Davi. Kathryn Harrold is so-so as the love interest (and, mind you, she's not the wife), actually shining for a moment in a restaurant scene with Arnold as she takes him to task for his lack of amorousness. And, yes, this movie drops one of my favorite Arnold wisecracks: As his unhappy, intoxicated wife heaves a cake at him, his character retorts: "You should not drink and bake." Classic. Another line overheard in passing which cracked me up: as Kaminsky and Davi's character were pursuing a man thru a crowded bar, an offended, bumped-into bystander comments with a "Hey, you cretin!" C'mon, who says that, really?

Product Description

Raw Deal is one of the most exposing and controversial documentaries about rape and fraternity life today. Billy Corben's remarkable exposé on the contested rape of 27-year-old Lisa Gier King in Gainesville, Florida, is sure to provoke heated discussions everywhere about rape, women's rights, and male privilege. On Friday, February 26, 1999, Delta Chi frat brothers at the University of Florida held a party at their fraternity house and hired exotic dancer Lisa Gier King to perform. The following morning, a half-naked and distraught King ran from the house, claiming that Michael Yarhaus had raper her. Her most startling allegation was that frat brother Tony Marzullo had videotaped the crime. Two days later, King herself was arrested for filing a false police report after authorities claimed the rape showed "clearly willing and consensual sex." The community was stunned by King's arrest after it was discovered that the videotape showed Marzullo himself repeatedly addressing the camera to gleefully describe that what he was witnessing was a rape. Under pressure from the media and Campus NOW to charge the frat brothers with rape, State Attorney Rod Smith arrogantly responded by making the tape available to the public so people could "make up their own minds." Filmmaker Billy Corben takes Smith's challenge and presents the scandalizing, sexually explicit footage alongside interviews of participants involved with the case to conduct an investigation the police never did. The result is a shocking insight on fraternity life and the politically constructed nature of "the truth."

This is a carefully constructed account of a contested event which some people see as rape and some people do not. What is interesting is that there are two videos showing the event and yet still, opposed interpretations are possible. It shows how foolish is the idea that if we could only see something then we would know what really happened. We would, but our ideas of what really happened would not be the same as anyone else's. By the way, I think it was rape.

4 out of 5 stars Great Film Noir.......2007-06-08

I really enjoyed this film. Claire Trevor is one of the finest ladies of Film Noir, and it is always a treat to see her perform. This was the first film I've seen with Marsha Hunt, and she was just as good as Miss Trevor. Raymond Burr was great as the "heavy". I always like seeing him in pre-Perry Mason roles. One thing I did not care for in this film was the music. It sounded like it belonged in some creepy sci-fi movie. If you are a Film Noir fan, this is a must.

Eagle-Lion / Edward Small Productions presents "RAW DEAL" (1948) (79 mins/B&W) --- (Dolby digitally remastered) --- featuring Dennis O'Keefe, Claire Trevor, Marsha Hunt, John Ireland & Raymond Burr and Directed by Anthony Mann --- Film noir is a cinematic term used primarily to describe Hollywood crime dramas that set their protagonists in a world perceived as inherently corrupt and unsympathetic...Hollywood's classic film noir period is generally regarded as stretching from the early 1940s to the late 1950s...Film noir of this era is associated with a low-key black-and-white visual style that has roots in German Expressionist cinematography, while many of the prototypical stories and much of the attitude of classic noir derive from the hardboiled school of crime fiction that emerged in the United States during the Depression...the term film noir (French for "black film"), first applied to Hollywood movies by French critic Nino Frank in 1946, was unknown to most of the American filmmakers and actors while they were creating the classic film noirs..the canon of film noir was defined in retrospect by film historians and critics; many of those involved in the making of film noir later professed to be unaware at the time of having created a distinctive type of film ... featuring top performances from the '40s and '50s with outstanding drama and screenplays, along with a wonderful cast and supporting actors to bring it all together ... another winner from the vaults of almost forgotten Hollywood gems ...

Under Anthony Mann (Director), Edward Small (Producer), Arnold B. Armstrong (Screenwriter), Audrey Ashley (Screenwriter), Leopold Atlas (Screenwriter), John C. Higgins (Screenwriter), Paul Sawtell (Original Score), John Alton (Cinematographer), Alfred DeGaetano (Editor), Edward L. Fields), Whit Bissell (Murderer), Cliff Clark (Gates) - - - - released on May 26, 1948, the story line has Joe Sullivan is itching to get out of prison ... he's taken the rap for Rick, who owes him $50 Grand. Rick sets up an escape for Joe, knowing that Joe will be caught escaping and be shot or locked away forever ... but with the help of his love-struck girl Pat and his sympathetic legal caseworker Ann, Joe gets further than he's supposed to, and we are posed with two very important questions ... is Joe really the cold and heartless criminal he appears to be, or is there a heart of gold under that gritty exterior? ... and does Joe belong with the tough, street-wise Pat, or with the prim, moralizing Ann? ... A fabulous Anthony Mann noir with the hulking visage of Raymond Burr as a sado-masochistic pyromaniac!

BIOS:
1. Dennis O'Keefe (aka: Edward Vance Flanagan)
Date of birth: 29 March 1908 - Fort Madison, Iowa
Date of death: 31 August 1968 _- Santa Monica, California

Special foonote, Dennis O'Keefe was an American actor started in films as an extra in the early 1930s, and appeared in numerous films under the name Bud Flanagan. After a small but impressive role in Saratoga (1937), Clark Gable recommended O'Keefe to MGM; he signed with them in 1937 and was renamed Dennis O'Keefe. His film roles were bigger after that, starting with The Bad Man of Brimstone (1938), and the lead role in Burn 'Em Up O'Connor (1939), O'Keefe left MGM around 1940, but continued to work in mostly lower budget productions, often played the tough guy in action and crime dramas like Lady Scarface (1941), The Leopard Man (1943), The Fighting Seabees (1944), The Story of Dr. Wassell (1944), T-Men (1947), and Raw Deal (1948). He gave excellent performances in comedies such as Topper Returns (1940), Weekend for Three (1941), Abroad with Two Yanks (1944), Brewster's Millions (1945), Getting Gertie's Garter (1945), and The Lady Wants Mink (1953). He was the dramatic lead in films like Doll Face (1946), Dishonored Lady (1947), Woman on the Run (1950), The Company She Keeps (1950), One Big Affair (1952), and Drums of Tahiti (1954), in the 1950s he did some directing, wrote mystery stories, and had a TV show, The Dennis O'Keefe Show --- (From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia)

2. Anthony Mann (aka: Emil Anton Bundesmann) (Director)
Date of birth: 30 June 1906 - San Diego, California
Date of death: 29 April 1967 - Berlin, Germany.

Specal footnote, Anthony Mann was an American actor and film director, in 1938, he moved to Hollywood, where he joined the Selznick Company, became an assistant director in 1942, directing low-budget assignments for RKO and Republic Films. Mann is best known today for directing several film noir classics, widely hailed as some of the finest films of the genre. Early films such as 1948's He Walked By Night (directed but not credited), as well as Desperate, Railroaded!, T-Men and Raw Deal made Mann a name in Hollywood, Mann also made his mark in the Western genre, particularly for a cycle of collaborations with James Stewart: Winchester '73 (1950), Bend of the River (1952), The Naked Spur (1953), The Far Country and The Man from Laramie (both 1955). Mann's other famous Western is Man of the West (1958), starring Gary Cooper, Mann was respected for his acute visual sensitivity toward the American Western landscape, effortlessly blending natural vistas with human drama. Mann's dramas verged on classical tragedy, often showing anguished heroes attempting to resolve personal pain and confusion, in the 1960s, Mann put aside Westerns to concentrate on making two epics for producer Samuel Bronston: El Cid (1961) and The Fall of the Roman Empire (1964), both intelligent and breathtaking examples of the epic form, once more demonstrating Mann's talents for merging drama with landscape and architecture --- (From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia)

After the success of T-Men, ambitious poverty-row studio Eagle-Lion reunited director Anthony Mann with cinematographer John Alton and beefy star Dennis O'Keefe for this change of pace, a haunting revenge noir about an escaped criminal, his loyal girlfriend (Claire Trevor), and a lovely legal aide (Marsha Hunt) he drags along as a hostage... or perhaps something more. Raymond Burr is the sleazy, sadistic gangster who double-crossed O'Keefe; in the film's most memorable scene he lashes out at a clumsy party girl by tossing a tureen of flaming cherries jubilee on the hapless woman (the scene may well have inspired Fritz Lang in The Big Heat). Trevor narrates in a cold, deliberate, yet hauntingly effective tone, which matches the foggy mist that envelopes the characters from the initial escape (a brilliant exercise in minimalism), through the getaway down a wooded coastal highway, to the finale on the San Francisco docks. Mann provides his usual undercurrent of brutal violence (a fight in a taxidermy showroom in which the antlers of a mounted buck become a lethal weapon), but the film is pervaded by a sense of doomed romanticism not seen in Mann's films before or since, and the volatile romantic triangle adds a further edge to the moody tension. Rife with B movie dialogue, the film may come off stilted and campy to some viewers, but taken on its own stylized conventions it's a minor masterpiece of low-budget film noir. --Sean Axmaker

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Raw Deal.......2007-06-25

This hard-as-nails potboiler was made for pennies at a Poverty Row studio by Mann and his legendary cinematographer, John Alton. Like the very best films in this genre, there's plenty of raw dialogue, heart-fluttering suspense, and a square-jawed tough guy who isn't afraid to blast away at his nemeses. But the sizzling love triangle that develops between Joe, Pat, and Ann is a perversely clever plot twist that contributes much to the fatalistic tone, with Trevor's cold-hearted voiceover to top it all off. Burr's turn as the brutal Coyle (watch out for that fruit flambeé!) is especially nasty. If you're in the market for a visceral thriller, put your money on "Raw Deal."

5 out of 5 stars Film Noir at its Best.......2007-02-04

Terrifying, gripping, astonishing. The mood, the characters, the lighting, the overvoice --all contribute to this fantastic experience into the sometimes conflicted lives of human trash and its inevitable destruction, like a Greek tragedy but with but an anti-hero, a fall guy (girl) and a female enabler, Claire Trevor, who, without doubt, steals the show.

4 out of 5 stars Great noir... just don't read the back of the DVD box!.......2006-05-10

This was an enjoyable film noir which gives the standard prison break/revenge angle a twist in that there is a love triangle between Dennis O'Keefe and two dames (one good, one evil), who represent his conscious. They keep distracting poor Dennis from getting his revenge on Raymond Burr, the dirty mug what double-crossed him out of his $50,000. The entire cast is great, but Burr steals the show as the sniveling, double-crossing villain; he tosses flaming cherries jubilee into the face of a broad that's annoying him and says, "she shoulda been more careful." It's hilarious how Burr hides from O'Keefe, sending his goons out instead, setting ambushes... I mean, I've seen bad guys do this before, but nobody does it better than Burr!

Raw Deal's soundtack is unusual in that it utilizes a theremin, which is most commonly associated with spooky 1950s sci-fi films. The print is crisp and clean with only a few minor jumps. Audio is crystal clear.

WARNING: A complete moron wrote the back of the DVD box. This nimrod gives away the ENTIRE STORY (including the ENDING) and does so in a style worthy of a fourth grade book report! That, and he mispells "gang boss" as "gag boss". Don't read the description on the back of the DVD if you want to be surprised when you watch this movie. Honestly, this is the WORST description ever written for any film EVER. Unbelievable!!!

5 out of 5 stars EXCELLENT PAIRING OF DIRECTOR MANN AND ACTOR O'KEEFE.......2006-03-25

Not all Film Noir is sinister, negative, or about gangsters. Some of it is about detectives and undercover cops, and is very heroic. What I like best about it are the low-key lighting effects and extreme camera angles, the grittiness and heightened drama and action, as well as the effects designed to create a mood of mystery, like fog. How could you not create a great suspense thriller in a setting like that?

For this genre, one of the finest directors was Anthony Mann, and one of the most interesting actors was Dennis O'Keefe. Their pairing in T-MEN and RAW DEAL delivers two of the best examples of Film Noir, though not nearly as well known as films like The Big Sleep and Double Indemnity. Mann was a top-notch director who went on to direct Jimmy Stewart in such westerns as Winchester '73, Bend of the River, The Far Country, and The Man From Laramie; as well as sand and sandal epics, like El Cid and Fall of the Roman Empire.

O'Keefe was a top-notch actor who did a decade of extra work at the beginning of the sound era, before he was discovered and recommended as a leading man by Clark Gable. After that he starred in a variety of comedies and dramas in the 40's and 50's. He also worked for the fledgling medium of television, making guest appearances on such shows as Robert Montgomery Presents, Studio One, and Lux Video Theatre; as well as starring in his own TV show in 1959. He's a very likable actor, even when he plays a convict.

In T-MEN, O'Keefe and a fellow treasury detective go undercover and risk their lives to break up a counterfeiting ring. In RAW DEAL, O'Keefe plays a wrongly convicted felon who escapes from prison looking for revenge, kidnaps his lawyer's secretary who has been visiting him in prison, and is ultimately redeemed by her from his course of self-destruction. There is actually a double-redemption in RAW DEAL that gives it a nice twist.

About the cinematography: John Alton gives a visual look to these two films that can only be described as powerful. In RAW DEAL, the scene on the boat with the clock in the background will never be forgotten by anyone who has seen it. The scenes in the steam baths in T-MEN, and the fight scene in the backroom of the beachside shop in RAW DEAL are also memorable.

4 out of 5 stars A noir tale of retribution.......2006-03-02

Director Anthony Mann displays a deft directorial touch in his low budget dark, dusky film noir drama "Raw Deal".

Burly Dennis O'Keefe playing incarcerated criminal Joe Sullivan breaks out of the California State penitentary, aided by his gang moll girlfriend the life fatigued Pat Cameron played by Claire Trevor. O'Keefe is endeavoring to seek out crime boss Rick Coyle played by star of the movie Raymond Burr. O'Keefe was sent away covering for Burr and is owed $50,000 for his part in a robbery. The ruthless psychotic Burr imbued with pyromaniacal tendencies has set up O'Keefe's escape hoping that he'll be killed in the process.

On the lam, O'Keefe and Trevor seek refuge in the apartment of a legal aide Ann Martin played by Marsha Hunt who helped O'Keefe during his trial and has visited him in prison. Hunt is taken as a reluctant hostage by the pair. It readily becomes apparent that O'Keefe and Hunt are attracted to each other and the old trustworthy but shopworn Trevor now has competition for O'Keefe's affections.

The trio now make their way towards San Francisco averting police, roadblocks and other trouble for the inevitable showdown with Burr. O'Keefe tells Hunt to beat it but she gets picked up by Burr's henchman Fantail played by John Ireland. Given a chance to escape the country aboard a freighter with Trevor in tow, O'Keefe flees the ship to rescue Hunt when he learns that Burr has kidnapped her.

Filmed skillfully by John Alton is the murky foggy streets of San Francisco, this classic film noir setting helps set the somber mood of the film. Mann displays a perchant for some terrific camera angles. Particularly effective was one where we see the reflection of Trevor's guilty face in a clock in the cabin of the freighter when she reveals that her rival Hunt is in Burr's clutches.

4 out of 5 stars Quality prints of two goodies at bargain price.......2005-08-25

In RAW DEAL fall guy, Dennis O'Keefe is a wanted man: wanted by a blonde (Claire Trevor complete with voice over), a brunette (the luscious Marsha Hunt), a VERY big bad guy (Raymond Burr) who likes to torture using lots of heat - a cigarette lighter, a pot of boiling coffee, anything hot and handy will do really. But if that is not enough, O'Keefe is also wanted by the entire police forces of four states! Like all good noir he gets it in the guts but he leaves a few bodies behind and two mourning women. With dialogue up to scratch, terrific acting, ok music and some brilliant photography - lovers of close ups ahoy! - this is one noir to own. PLUS a second movie by the director, not quite as good, but better than most.

5 out of 5 stars He's the Mann.......2005-02-25

I agree with others in that these are both outstanding films. Absolutely terrific. Anyone who has a basic understanding of Noir recognizes Anthony Mann's talent. "He Walks By Night" is also excellent, but AM is uncredited as the director, even though he worked on it and his influence is obvious.

5 out of 5 stars The best of Anthony Mann!.......2004-12-15

With this well-priced 2-disc edition you get the 1947 classic "T-Men" as well as the 1948 classic "Raw Deal". These are easily the two best examples of low-budget film noir directed by Anthony Mann. "Raw Deal" stars Dennis O'Keefe, Claire Trevor, John Ireland, Marsha Hunt, and a wonderfully evil Raymond Burr! Dennis O'Keefe stars as a gangster seeking revenge on Raymond Burr, the mobster who double-crossed him and had him framed. Claire Trevor plays O'Keefe's girlfriend, but when the pair kidnap an attractive young woman (Marsha Hunt), it quickly turns into a love triangle! Both women want O'Keefe, but he's determined to have his revenge, leading to tragic consequences. "Raw Deal" has incredible cinemaography, an awesome cast, and great dialogue.

"T-Men" stars Dennis O'Keefe, Mary Meade, Alfred Ryder, Wally Ford, and June Lockhart, and is a tough-as-nails story about two U.S. Treasury agents (Dennis O'Keefe & Alfred Ryder) that go undercover in order to bust a huge counterfeiting ring that has already killed one T-Man. Despite the film's corny beginning and narration, the movie is very suspenseful towards the end, especially when the leader of the counterfeit ring becomes increasingly suspicious of the two agents, who pose as crooks. Both of these are undeniably classics of the film noir genre, and thankfully the picture quality is very good. Also the bonus features include the original trailers as well as two documentaries narrated by Max Allan Collins. If you enjoy classic crime dramas then this belongs in your dvd library!

I went to "vcientertainment dot com" and I was able to see a picture of the cover and asertain which movies are in this set..."T-MEN" & "RAW DEAL"....Both on their own a great film noir standards...I Hope this helps..

Please list the titles. Anthony Mann was one of the premier noir directors, his work deserves to be acknowledged. I want to order these films but can't without more information.

The one star refers to the fact that the titles are not listed and not, of course, to the content of the films.

Before Anthony Mann solidified his reputation with his edgy Westerns starring Jimmy Stewart such as The Naked Spur, he toiled in Hollywood's "Poverty Row," transforming a handful of low-budget crime thrillers into stylish, violent film noir classics with a mix of grace and grit. Three of his best, all photographed by the brilliant John Alton, have been collected in The Roan's Group's The Film Noir of Anthony Mann triple feature.

T-Men stars square-jawed Dennis O'Keefe, a former leading man turned beefy B-movie tough guy, and Alfred Ryder as pair of undercover Treasury agents who enter the shadow world of America's mob underworld when their predecessor is killed. Posing as street thugs, they infiltrate their way into a gang of counterfeiters, living the dangerous life of the gangster to the hilt while living in constant danger of death if their covers are blown. Mann and Alton mix documentary-style realism with stark sets lit in jagged, claustrophobic shadows and abstract haziness, creating an eerie emptiness.

Raw Deal reunites Mann, Alton, and O'Keefe in a haunting revenge noir about an escaped criminal, his loyal girlfriend (Claire Trevor), and a lovely legal aide (Marsha Hunt) he drags along as a hostage. Trevor's cold, deliberate narration and the moody, fog-bound visuals stand in counterpoint to the brutal explosions of violence (the most memorable belonging to sadistic gangster Raymond Burr, who tosses a tureen of flaming cherries jubilee on a clumsy party girl in a scene that anticipates The Big Heat), adding a tough edge to the doomed romanticism.

Mann never took screen credit for He Walked by Night, though he directed a good portion of the documentary-influenced thriller. Richard Basehart stars as an electronics genius who turns to theft and murder, while tough-guy cop Scott Brady tracks him down with the resources of the police department, notably a wisecracking forensics expert played by Jack Webb. The stiff, stentorian narration and procedural detail of this film were big influences on Webb when he developed Dragnet.

These films are all firmly in the B tradition: stilted, often hackneyed dialogue, abstract sets, and more than a few lesser performances can be found throughout, but Mann's spare style and hard edge and Alton's stunning visuals lift the films out of the poverty-row ghetto and into film noir history. --Sean Axmaker

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Noir at its best.......2002-04-30

I had been trying to obtain a copy of this dvd for some time and was delighted to finally purchase it via amazon. It is a beautifully presented dvd with three superb examples of what makes film noir (a movement, not a genre!). Aldrich's direction is as tight and claustrophobic as you would expect and the cinematography of John Alton can be seen to define all the charactersitics associated with noir. Long may films such as these be available on dvd.

5 out of 5 stars MASTERPIECES IN BLACK AND WHITE.......2000-04-18

It was a great idea from the Roan Group to present three movies directed by Anthony Mann in the late forties. Unfortunately, their copies have seen better days ! Too bad.

So, the sound and the images of HE WALKED BY NIGHT are simply awful. There's a slight improvement for RAW DEAL and only T-MEN could be qualified as visible for the average DVD addict.

But, as always, if the movie is interesting, I try to forget the imperfections and concentrate myself on the movie. And, believe me, these three are good movies. I personally have a little preference for RAW DEAL with its typical Film Noir mood : a hero, played by Dennis O'Keefe, two girls - the blonde and the brunette - and a sadistic villain impersonated by Raymond Burr.

HE WALKED BY NIGHT and T-MEN are typical examples of the semi-documentary style used in a lot film noir of the 1945-1950 period. They present a case which, if you want to believe the narrator, was a real story. Well, well, well. Naturally, it's one of the numerous clichés used by Hollywood in order to nail the viewer.

Director Anthony Mann is known for his westerns of the 50's starring James Stewart ; he deserves also to be recognized as a Master of the Film Noir genre.

No menu... and hardly a scene access.

A DVD for your library.

4 out of 5 stars excellent presentation, but a few flaws.......2000-02-09

Few american directors can claim as large a volume of quality work as Anthony Mann. This dvd has two of his best and one of his lesser film noirs. T-MEN and RAW DEAL are worth buying these disks for on their own, HE WALKED BY NIGHT, while a good film doesn't come close to the other two in terms of Mann's spatial awareness and Alton's expressionist camera work. I can't help feeling that one of Mann's other great film noirs like THE TALL TARGET, RAIROADED, BORDER INCIDENT or STRANGE IMPERSONATION would have been more appropriate (but then again the films on this dvd also showcase the talents of John Alton while some of those other films don't). The reviewer below is right to say that the sound on these films is substandard (T-MEN is alright but the other two are unsatisfactory) but the dialogue is still audible and the quality of the transfer, especially in the case of RAW DEAL, is amazingly clear. Finally, that these three films should be available at this price means that these disks are a must-buy. I hope that the Roan Group releases a second collection of Anthony Mann film noirs, including the films listed above, as this is my favourite dvd in my limited collection.

2 out of 5 stars Poor sound quality.......2000-02-01

Three entertaining movies but the sound quality is so poor that it greatly detracts from the experience.

4 out of 5 stars Cheesey plots, but great cinematography and lighting - fun!.......1999-07-23

This is so representative of the B-movies of the '40's and early '50's! BUT - Director, Anthony Mann and Cinematographer, John Alton decided to be artistic, despite the low budgets and moderately corny scripts. I wonder if the studio heads even knew what was going on? Anyway, Mann and Alton weren't the only ones to explore Film Noir (see Orson Welles' "Lady from Shang Hai," for example, or "The Third Man"), but if you haven't seen these three films like I hadn't, since I was a kid, you should take advantage of the availability. Two of them were released on Laserdisc, awhile back, but were pricey. This is reasonable, there are 3 movies, and the film prints and DVD transfers look great, too!

3 out of 5 stars Ah-nuld's best, but still very unpolished! Darren McGavin good in supporting role.......2006-08-01

Kathryn Harrold still no easier to take
than in 'The Hunter', w/ the late Steve
McQueen. McGavin, until he's crippled
(pretty much) almost steals the show
and Murphy Brown's Joe Riggelbuto does
well in a villianous role, helping Robert
Davi. "You should not drink and bake!"

3 out of 5 stars by the numbers action from his honor gov. schwarzenegger.......2006-02-22

arnold has made some good ones and some bad ones and this one falls somewhere in between those.arnold goes undercover to bring down a mob kingpin. thats the story, nothing more nothing less. this one just can't get it's self going and is slow in some places. the gunbattles and fights are ok, but not great. still if you like arnold you may like this one
