Not singling out any fellow reviewer (or naming names, as it were), but if we as well-intentioned movie-watchers can't look past the politics motivating a particular flick (pro or con), then we ought to recuse ourselves from rating it. It only serves to muddy the waters for folks who want to know by objective standards if a film is worth checking out. In the case of 'Big Jim McLain,' I'm afraid, as gung-ho a fan of the Duke's as I am-- and ardently anti-pinko-- there isn't much to recommend here. It's a cold-war hash with elements of police procedural, espionage thriller and action-romance that has little in terms of dramatic flesh to sink your teeth into. In fact, aside from Wayne's leading-man charm, which is ever-present and estimable, there's not much holding this potboiler together at all. Perhaps the only memorable scenes come in the form of comic asides featuring, respectively, floozy extraordinaire Madge played by Veda Ann Borg and mental patient Mr. Henried (Hans Conried). For those of us who believe in traditional American ideals, it's quaint and refreshing to hear much of the patriotic dialogue and narration, but as entertainment 'Big Jim' simply doesn't make the cut.

3 out of 5 stars BIG JIM MCLAIN.......2007-06-28

As one of John Wayne earlier movies I found it very slow moving a long.

2 out of 5 stars big Jim McClain.......2007-05-31

Big Jim McClain
The Movie
Here we have John Wayne in a propaganda film about why you should hate communists. He plays and agent of homeland security bent on breaking the communist groups of America. It comes off as a hate film to be honest and as a fan of the Duke I don't like this side of him at all. It is easy to see why they took so long to release this film to DVD. Its one not a very good movie and two full of stereo types that in its day I guess was necessary.

The Video
It's presented in Full Frame Black and white. It has a lot of blips and a little flicker in the picture they did not put anything into correcting the films need for restorations. It is a very poor transfer.

The Audio
1.0 mono which is just as well cause it's not that great to listen to anyhow.

The Extras
So You Want To Enjoy Life
This is a Story of a guy who wants to die because he only has 30 days to live. Well it's on the DVD why I have no clue its really not that funny. It's like one long joke that runs about 15 minutes...lol it's actually better than the movie though.

The Super Snooper
A classic Daffy Duck as a private eye we have all seen a million times good one to have.

Theatrical Trailer
Just what the movie is about shows they weren't as good as today. For the life of me I don't understand why they include um if they aren't going to clean them up.

3 out of 5 stars An interesting Cold War era John Wayne movie.......2007-05-31

Big Jim McLain is an interesting movie that is a result of the times it was made in, and that has to be considered when watching it. John Wayne is Jim McLain, an agent for the Un-American Committee searching for communists living in the United States. McLain, along with his partner Mal Baxter, are sent to Hawaii to find out who the Communist party leader there is as well as the ten secret party cells hiding out in the islands. Also, McLain falls in love with a woman he meets during the course of his investigation. This is a movie that is hard to explain; it needs to be seen to understand why. It was made in 1952, which is evident throughout. It might as well be a propaganda movie because of the stances taken, but don't get me wrong, that's why I'm recommending it. Big Jim McLain is entertaining, campy fun that is sometimes unintentionally funny. As well, the movie was filmed in Hawaii which looks gorgeous. So for a very entertaining look at a different time in American culture, check out Big Jim McLain.

In the title role, John Wayne plays government agent Jim McLain, a driven, dedicated man who stops at nothing in pursuit of his job. But at the same time, he's frustrated that the people he's trying to get to are protected by the US government and Constitution. Nancy Olson plays Nancy Vallon, a secretary who falls in love with McLain during his investigation and eventually get engaged. Their relationship provide some of the movie's lighter moments and surprisingly works pretty well. In one of his first bigger roles, James Arness plays Mal Baxter, McLain's partner who is as driven as Jim to stop communism because what happened to him fighting in Korea as a Marine. Much of the rest of the cast is an ensemble who McLain and Baxter come across while searching for the Communist party members in Hawaii. One that stands out is Veda Ann Borg as Madge, a woman who has involvement with the Communists and takes a liking to McLain.

The recently released DVD, in conjunction with the Duke's 100th birthday, features a good-looking standard presentation in B & W, two Warner Bros. cartoons "So You Want to Enjoy Life" and "The Super Snooper", and a theatrical trailer. So for an entertaining movie, if somewhat dated, but remember the time it was made, check out Big Jim McLain. It's a different sort of movie for the Duke, but don't let that scare you. And watch out for those Commies, they're cold blooded!

2 out of 5 stars A Sign of the Times.......2007-05-27

Typical simplistic nonsense Hollywood style. Conservative patriots are no better than liberal patriots who cheerfully ignore the other side of an issue while pushing their own agenda. Sixy years ago Communism was sold to American sheep as the monster in the closet by the American government-military to give the people something to worry themselves silly with and build backyard bomb shelters while the gov't and the military Americanized the world with guns, butter and American Christianity so it could make a buck. John Wayne was the prototype of today's celebrities who ignorantly involve themselves in complex world affairs they don't even pretend to understand while engaging in extremely dubious personal behavior. After all those war and western flicks, he did what so many other celebrities do: he began to believe his own macho flag waving BS. I wish he had just shut up and stuck to his calling just as I wish liberal loudmouths like Sean Penn and Rosie O'Donnell would shut up because, even when I agree with them in theory, I am appalled and embarrassed to have people with such bumper sticker mentalities misusing their fame by presuming to speak from my point of view. In other countries they have public intellectuals; in America we have pundits, talk show hosts and opinionated entertainers. John Wayne can fairly be credited with initiating and popularizing this form of public discourse and the whole world is poorer for his trend setting.

Though well short of the classics he would go on to make with Budd Boetticher (Seven Men from Now, The Tall T, et al.), Man in the Saddle is measurably superior to most of Randolph Scott's other '50s Westerns. The script has enough characters, criss-crossed revenge subplots, and tortuous romances for a miniseries; yet somehow, within a B-movie running time, director André De Toth manages to give all of them enough attention so that the movie makes sense, even threatens to get really interesting. He also finds distinctive ways to stage standard set pieces like, say, a saloon shootout. And there's a cumulatively amazing fistfight that starts in a mountain cabin, totally uses up that set, then spills downhill through snowfield and waterfall. Randy's character is a more complicated fellow than usual, and the Scots-Canadian actor Alexander Knox, best known for his Oscar®-nominated turn as Woodrow Wilson, makes a creepily compelling range baron. --Richard T. Jameson

Description

In MAN IN THE SADDLE we see Randolph Scott in an archetypal role as Owen Merritt, a man of few words, unerring aim and unbreakable principles, who swallows his pride when the woman he loves marries for wealth. But when her wildly jealous husband vows to ruin Merritt's ranch, Merritt strikes back. A satisfying combination of action, romance, and breathtaking high-desert scenery, MAN IN THE SADDLE also features Tennessee Ernie Ford in a rare movie appearance.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Rattled by the rush........2007-07-13

This is a spectacular Western. I can easily see a day coming when Andre DeToth's star will be in the ascendant, and Boetticher's will have fallen into oblivion.

I recently saw almost all of Boetticher's westerns with Randolph Scott in a local theater, and you could tell people wanted to chuckle at all the "A man could do this" and "A man can do that" dialogue, but somehow had convinced themselves they were watching high art. But isn't Boetticher's macho code a form of paganism, of a self-serving survival of the fittest philosophy? Nowhere is this more apparent than in Seven Men From Now, where Gail Russell's husband is considered some sort of eunuch just because he's a nice guy, and he has to get shot in the back to prove his manhood. Then Randolph gets his girl, of course.

Andre DeToth's westerns are no different, meaning they also take place in a pagan world, except that through savvy highlighting and exaggeration, DeToth pushes the sex and violence of the genre into the forefront, forcing them on your attention and making them seem unheroic and ignoble. DeToth has a very distinctive style that is almost like a Bresson film on fast-forward -- the delivery of lines is near-robotic, the angles seem canted and off-kilter even when they're not, character is always in flux, and so is nature. What this does is create a world where events fly by almost too fast for the characters to process, yet this doesn't stop them from being sure of their goals, which upon reflection, would seem insane.

"If you're still thinking of Laurie, you're gonna get yourself killed!" one of Randolph's friends says before the final showdown. "My mind's clear," Randolph replies. The irony of this is that his mind is never clear. His battles make no sense. Ostensibly he's trying to start trouble with Alexander Knox, the biggest rancher in the territory, because Joan Leslie has left him for Knox and money. But -- SPOILERS AHEAD -- even after his nemesis is dead and Joan Leslie has forever severed ties with him, he still keeps fighting, like a clockwork toy that has been wound-up to go on forever.

Leslie herself is driven entirely by her own mercurial loins, fluctuating between Scott and Knox constantly. She's not worth killing a beetle over, let alone another human. In one scene she proudly escapes Knox's ranch by intimidating one of his henchmen with her expert marksmanship, but DeToth cleverly mutes the proto-feminist aspect of this. Considering that this woman is about as stable as the San Andreas faultline, the idea of her with a gun is about as appealing as Hilary Clinton with her finger on the button. Usually films with strong female heroines are seen as ahead of their time, but this one seems much closer to the truth, to me, of their fickle and mutable character, and how almost of all of human progress and aspiration is built on men beating each other senseless over their whims.

DeToth's direction throughout creates such an impression of unstoppable momentum and speed that you almost want to rush in there and start shooting yourself. And that is exactly the point. "Sitting on my porch night after night was getting boring anyway," Scott says, shortly before blowing a million holes in a cabin full of outlaws. Boredom is the enemy of all these people, their real fear, the shadow that stalks them and which they'll sell their souls to avoid. The paradoxical moral of this exhilarating movie, then, is just this -- in boredom lies salvation.

4 out of 5 stars "Man in the Saddle (1951) ... Randolph Scott ... Columbia Pictures Classic Westerns".......2007-04-08

Columbia Pictures presents "MAN IN THE SADDLE" (1951) (87 mins/Color) (Dolby digitally remastered) --- Starring Randolph Scott, Joan Leslie, Ellen Drew, Alexander Knox & John Russell. --- Directed by André De Toth and released in December 2, 1951, our story line and film, A rancher is forced to stand by as his girl friend is lured away by a wealthy neighboring rancher. When the neighbor is killed, Scott is accused of the murder, and must clear himself. After a blood-spattered fistfight with a gunslinger and several gun battles, Scott consoles himself with schoolteacher Ellen Drew. Based on a novel by Ernest Haycox, Man in the Saddle was the first of the lucrative collaborations between star Randolph Scott and producer Harry Joe Brown --- some of the stand outs of the film: seeing "Tennessee" Ernie Ford without a mustache singing "Man in the Saddle"; Alfonso Bedoya's too brief scenes as a cook; the color photography of the high country, and the fight scene there with John Russell --- Randy Scott's a 'peaceable man' in the tradition of Wild Bill Elliott, but don't provoke him you'll soon see the other side of the coin --- It becomes an open war after Richard Rober kills brothers Camerone Mitchell and Richard Crane who work for Scott, then everything breaks loose.

Under André De Toth (Director), Harry Joe Brown (Producer), Kenneth Gamet (Screenwriter), Ernest Haycox (Book Author), Charles Lawton (Cinematographer), George Duning (Composer (Music Score), Charles Nelson (Editor), George Brooks (Art Director) - - - - the cast includes Randolph Scott (Owen Merritt), Joan Leslie (Laure Bidwell), Ellen Drew (Nan Melotte), Alexander Knox (Will Isham), Richard Rober (Fay Dutcher), John Russell (Hugh Clagg), Guinn "Big Boy" Williams (Bourke Prine), Alfonso Bedoya (Cultus Charley), Clem Bevans (Pay Lankershim), Cameron Mitchell (George Virk), Richard Crane (Juke Virk), Frank Sully (Lee Repp), George Lloyd (Tom Croker), Frank S. Hagney (Ned Bale), Don Beddoe (Love Bidwell), Grant Withers, Tennessee Ernie Ford, James Kirkwood (Sheriff Medary) - - - - Randy Scott had a quiet gentleman nature about him which is not seen in the films of today ... Randy took his job and his responsibility to his audience very seriously ,,, would not settle for anything less than his best ... same was true in his personal life.

Special footnote, George Randolph Scott better known as Randolph Scott, was an American film actor whose career spanned the sound era from the late 1920s to the early 1960s ... his popularity grew in the 1940s and 1950s, appearing in such films as "Gung Ho"! (1943) and "Rebecca of Sunnybrook Farm" (1938); but he was especially famous for his numerous Westerns including "Virginia City" (1940) with Errol Flynn and Humphrey Bogart, "Western Union" (1941) with Robert Young and "Ride the High Country" (1962) with Joel McCrea (a coin was flipped to see whether Scott or McCrea would receive top billing, and Scott won despite having a slightly smaller role) ... his long fistfight with John Wayne in "The Spoilers" (1942) was frequently cited by critics and the press as the most thrilling ever filmed; they were fighting over Marlene Dietrich ... another smash hit film together that same year called "Pittsburgh" (1942) once again with Dietrich, Scott and Wayne --- Daniel Webster defines "Legend", as being a notable person, or the stories told about that person exploits --- well by the time Randolph Scott made his best films he had long established himself as a legend in the film industry --- they say practice makes perfect, if that is true by 1958 at 60 years of age he was the master with these oaters from the 50s ... 4 out of 5 stars All action colorful Randolph Scott western from 1951.......2007-01-04

MAN IN THE SADDLE was the first of six westerns that Hungarian director Andre de Toth made with veteran western star Randolph Scott. No quite up to Scott's later collaboration with Bud Boetticher, which commenced in 1956 with the marvellous SEVEN MEN FROM NOW. Nevertheless, MAN IN THE SADDLE is a very worthy contribution to the genre. This film also marked the first teaming of producer Harry Joe Brown, with Randolph Scott as associate producer and was known as a SCOTT-BROWN PRODUCTION.

The story was from a novel of the same name by Ernest Haycox. Owen Merritt (Scott) had lost his sweetheart Laurie (Joan Leslie) to local cattle baron Will Isham (Alexander Knox) Isham tries to buy out all the local ranchers by fair means or foul. Merritt resists being drawn into a fight for Laurie or over Isham's land grabbing venture fearing that it will be taken for sour grapes. Plenty of action on the way to the final showdown with Scott assisted by his ranch hands and close-neighbour Nan Melotte (Ellen Drew). The film is memorable for its wonderful night-time photography and a marvellous extended fight in a mountain shack between Merritt and Hugh Clagg (John Russell), which really did "bring the house down". Tennessee Ernie Ford makes a brief appearance and sings the title song. High quality transfer to DVD

A Satisfying combination of action , Romance and breathtaking high-desert scenery , MAN IN THE SADDLE also featured Tennesse Ernie Ford (1919-1991) in a rare movie appearance . Great plot and wonderful outdore scenery and Randolph Scott..what more do you need ! . High Qualty digital transfer . Recommended

Husband and wife Arliss Howard (Full Metal Jacket) and Debra Winger (Terms of Endearment, An Officer and a Gentleman) star in Big Bad Love, a fragmented adaptation of stories by Southern writer Larry Brown. Leon Barlow (Howard) is a hard-drinking, heavy-smoking, long-haired, and deeply unhappy aspiring writer who pulls a dozen rejection slips out of his mailbox every day. He fights with his ex-wife Marilyn (Winger) over his undependability, helps his best friend Monroe (Paul Le Mat) paint a house, and generally tries to get through his life with some semblance of purpose. The struggle of everyday life is well balanced by vivid realizations of Barlow's dreams, fantasies, and fleeting thoughts. Just at the point when the vague plot of Big Bad Love threatens to become maddening, the movie crystallizes with a tragedy that brings the underlying grief into focus. A messy but deeply felt movie. --Bret Fetzer

Description

Arliss Howard (Full Metal Jacket) and three-time OscarÂ(r) nominee* Debra Winger (Terms of Endearment) "achieve a tempestuous chemistry" (E! Online) in this alternately poignantand funny film based on the stories of Mississippi writer Larry Brown. Co-starring Rosanna Arquette, Paul Le Mat and Angie Dickinson, Big Bad Love is "blazingly alive, admirable [and] marvelously cinematic" (The Hollywood Reporter)! A sexy publisher reads submissions on horseback. A house floods with the tears of an overprotective grandma. And a soldier braves a minefield to bring a toy to his kid. But nothing in the fantasy life of alcoholic writer Leon Barlow (Howard) can compare with his reality. From a fiery relationship with his ex-wife (Winger) to enough rejectionslips to spell out the word "failure," it's no wonder Leon escapes into his imagination until a tragedy forces him to focus on tying his two estranged worlds back together. *1993: Actress, Shadowlands; 1983: Actress, Terms of Endearment; 1982: Actress, An Officer and a Gentleman

5 out of 5 stars The Angst of Arliss.......2007-03-14

If everything in your life is going well, you'll likely regard this story as somewhat frustrating. For once could you NOT be drunk, Barlow?? But if you have unfulfilled dreams and are struggling without sympathy or support, and face it, most of us have been there at one time or another, then you'll find this one of the most compelling, engaging stories ever. The character of Leon Barlow (Arliss Howard) is both complex and perplexing. You'll want to watch this more than once. And get the sound track too -- awesome music!

4 out of 5 stars Don't forget Larry.......2006-03-22

I bought this DVD for my brother's birthday because he has almost all of Larry Brown's books (as does my wife) and neither had heard of "Big Bad Love". To me this movie is more about Larry Brown than Arliss Howard or Debra Winger, who most of the critics discuss rather than its resemblance to an autobiography of Brown.

If you have read any of Brown's books, you will soon realize that you probably can't get through all of them -- too much this, or too much that, as your tastes dictate. So it is with this movie. Winger gives the movie credibility and is probably the best reason to see it.

For those of you who think the movie setting is hokum, leave the University campus and take a quick swing around Oxford where Brown lived and worked until his untimely death. Mixed in with all the ante bellum homes, oak lined boulevards, new mansions, University professors, Faulkner festivals and professional people, you will find just the kind of people and neighborhoods portrayed in this movie.

4 out of 5 stars Big Bad Love Good.......2006-02-23

Unusually good adaptation of a set of stories by Larry Brown, strung together into a good script and very well acted on all accounts. If you're a struggling writer, it will make you laugh, and then you'll be back into your normal depression at how the publishing mill spits out great writers in favor of hacks every day.

3 out of 5 stars Never getting used to rejection.......2006-01-30

"Some dreams ruin being awake if you know the difference. Best not to know."

In high school I spent the night over at a friend's house. We lived out in the country. He wanted to watch "Pink Floyd: The Wall." He said you had to be on drugs to really get it. He didn't have any drugs, but he said if we watched the movie really late at night, being half-awake and half-asleep, that it might give the same experience. Watching "Big Bad Love" reminded me of that night, even though I watched it wide awake on a Sunday afternoon. It's what "The Wall" might've been if Roger Waters had been a writer who'd grown up in Mississippi.

I think I needed to read Larry Brown's book of short stories before I watched this so I could have better appreciated the film's narrative. Halfway through, I gave up trying to connect with any of the multiple storylines and started watching it as an expressionist portrait of a writer's struggle. This is Arliss (Men Don't Leave) Howard's directorial debut -- he also plays the main character, Barlow. Howard has been acting for over twenty years, and this seems like a film packed with all the ideas from a notebook kept during that time of scenes he'd want to direct whenever he got the opportunity. Those scenes are gorgeously shot, and are filled with powerful small moments - the opening sex scene with Marilyn (Debra Winger) in a bathtub wearing a wedding gown, Barlow and best friend Monroe (Paul Le Mat) chasing after the Flasher in their pick-up truck, the scenes with Rosanna Arquette -- but the overall narrative structure is so disjointed that it made it difficult for me to become emotionally engaged with anyone other than Barlow. This is a shame because the supporting players all deliver strong performances that are all lost in Barlow's detached, tormented, inebriated perspective. Then again, maybe that's the point. Howard inhabits Barlow on the screen and behind the camera. There's a tragedy late in the story that provides some focus, but the film never really loses its hallucinatory feel.

Also, the soundtrack is worth checking out if you're into eclectic blues. In the film, there's a scene in a bar featuring the late R.L. Burnside performing "Snake Drive" as Barlow punches some guy's lights out.

5 out of 5 stars Didn't know what to expect.......2004-10-21

I've read some Larry Brown novels but not the short story this movie was based on -- this might have been a good thing. I had no particular expectations, except that the movie would be about a writer and that, as with other Brown characters, the writer would be frustrated and maybe drunk.

I'm *not* a writer, so this is hard for me to explain -- but watching Big Bad Love was like being in Brown's head. What a great experience. I can't think of any other film that's done this. I enjoyed every second, and I'd like to thank Arliss Howard and everyone involved for doing it.

4 out of 5 stars two very different westerns for the price of one.......2007-08-07

The picture quality of Abilene Town on this DVD is marginal:rather fuzzy at times,
but it didn't really bother me that much. The story involves a familiar theme of cattlemen vs. sod busters, but with the added ingredient of non-saloon shopkeepers as a third major block in the politics of Abilene. It's Marshal Randolph Scott's job to try to keep these 3 groups from destroying each other and to ease the inevitable transformation of Abilene from a rowdy cow town into a more civilized place. The limited humor mostly derives from the love-hate relationship between Scott and dance hall canary Ann Dvrak. Edgar Buchanan's character is more pathetic than humorous. He is unbelievably cowardly: Let sleeping dogs lie and run from barking dogs. Why does Scott tolerate him as often his only potential helper in his various duties as marshal. In fact, Scott lies about Buchanan's role in the capture of a desperado in order to help him keep his job as county sheriff.
Though an older film, the quality of the Santa Fe Trail DVD is much better. This story exploits some big names in the coming Civil War, who supposedly all graduated from West Point at the same time and all were newly assigned to keep order in bleeding Kansas. Clean-shaven mild-mannered Ronald Reagan reminds us much more of the Gipper than of George Custer. Again, Errol Flynn is a remarkably clean-shaven representation of normally hirsute Jeb Stuart. Ramond Massey makes an unbeatable characterization of fanatic John Brown, even if many of the details are historically inaccurate. Van Heflin's character is purely fictitious, but does add another dimension to the film story. It offers an alternative explanation for the unexpected arrival of Federal troops at Harper's Ferry during Brown's raid. Actually, Brown made a fatal blunder in allowing a train from the west to procede to Washington. Before these troops arrived, local militia actually sealed off the bridge across the Potomac, which was Brown's intended escape route. If you can stomach all the gross historical inaccuracies in this film, it is an action-packed entertaining story, mostly carried by the charisma of Flynn and Massey, the banter between and within several buddy pairs and the well-established cinematic romantic partnership of Flynn and Olivia. Van Heflin's difficult character and betrayal adds an additional dimension.

4 out of 5 stars DON'T TAKE SIDES.......2007-07-16

Based on an original screenplay by Robert Buckner, SANTA FE TRAIL was shot by Michael Curtiz in 1940. There are two ways to get onto this movie nowadays, more than 65 years after its release. You could enjoy, like I did, its rythm, the actors or the strange idea, in a film made in Hollywood, to depict the abolitionists as fanatics and the unionists as sensible people.

You could also take the time to think about the message conveyed by SANTA FE TRAIL through the actions of its main character Errol Flynn. Jeb - Errol Flynn - Stuart is a man who doesn't take sides, who just obeys orders and waits for the happy ending History will certainly provide to the American nation. The description of this passive demeanour shocked me a lot and, while I was watching SANTA FE TRAIL, I couldn't but think that, the same year, another American director, Charles S. Chaplin, was desperately trying to alert the world about what was going on in Europe with The Great Dictator (2 Disc Special Edition).

A DVD zone mixed feelings.

4 out of 5 stars History lesson sorely needed.......2007-06-02

How many school children in 21 st century know about John Brown? How many know about the causes of this horrible war that pitted former comrades against one another? Is this movie entirely accurate and does take artistic license with the characters and storyline? Yes and No, but and so do many contemporary films such as 'Saving Private Ryan' or 'Patton' take liberties with actual events. As a number of reviewers have noted, we see events in history through politically correct eyes. My major fault with the movie is that southerners did not have a distinctive regional drawl, especially Errol Flynn's character, Jeb Stuart. Having your children watch this movie will provide them an insight into a forgotten epic American history while at the same time entertaining them with battles and other action scenes. John Brown may have been right in his core principles but he is a prime example of excessive zeal clashing with established law and order.

4 out of 5 stars Two good films, in good condition........2005-11-14

I don't very often write reviews (although I enjoy reading those of others), but I must just tell anyone wondering which version of "Santa Fe Trail" to buy that the Marengo version (the one that includes "Abilene Town" as a bonus) is excellent. I was not familiar with either of these movies before - I don't know why, as they are both really good movies, and better than many others that I have bought individually and paid more money for. "Santa Fe Trail" is a really unusual, and interesting movie. The combination of Curtiz and Flynn gives it something - a depth, or thoughtfulness, perhaps - that most movies just don't have. It is also, IMHO, a better movie than Errol Flynn's other cavalry outing, "They Died With Their Boots On", so I don't know why the former is in the public domain, as if nobody cares about it, with numerous versions available (some of which don't sound very good), while the latter is presumably still owned and guarded exclusively by Warner Brothers, who have recently brought out a lavish DVD version of it, with various "extras" on it.
As for "Abilene Town", that also is a surprisingly good movie, its plot not unlike that of "Dodge City". On a trivial note: it looks to me as if Gary Cooper's famous, iconic "look" in "High Noon" (reproduced in books and posters so often) was in fact inspired by the outfit that Randolph Scott wears in "Abilene Town".

3 out of 5 stars Rousing but inaccurate adventure movie.......2005-07-06

The title may well lead people to expect a Western and indeed this is how the movie has been packaged ,but I would argue it is nothing of the sort .While the Santa Fe Trail is mentioned and the role of the railroad in opening up the West is touched upon the movie is really about the origins of the Civil War .
Flynn stars as J E B Stuart -arguably the most famous cavalry commnader in the Confederate army .We first meet him as a West Point cadet, along with several other men who became prominent in the military in subsequent years chief among them being Custer (Ronald Reagan ) Phil Sheridan ( David Bruce) and George Pickett( Willam Marshall ) .His nemesis at the Academy is "Rader" played by Van Heflin ,a fervent abolitionist and disciple of the firebrand preacher John Brown .The two get involved in a brawl and Rader is sent down for having abolitionist pamphlets in his locker .Already the Civil war is casting its shadows over the military -;we meet Lee and Davis ,men who were to play a key role in events in the following decade .
Stuart ,Custer and Sheridan are sent to "Bloody Kansas" to keep the peace in the face of John Browns agitation for it to become a free state .They clash early on when they foil a gun running bid by Brown and his followers who now number the embittered and mercenary Rader in their ranks (it is made clear he fights for money ,not belief in the cause) .Further confrontations with Brown arise ,culminating in the bloody affray at Harper's Ferry
There is no shortage of movies dealing with the Civil War but very few have adressed its origins which makes this aspect of tghe movie so disappointing .Perhaps mindful of the need not to damage its potential in the South ,scriptwriter Robert Bruckner has come up with an evasive screenplay which sits on the fence politically .Brown is depicted as a fiery psychopath and an irrational madman whose cause is founded on the need for someone to hate rather than any love of the blacks or sense of moral righness ,while the Heflin character is a vain ,envious opportunist who loves only money and betrays any cause he feels does not value his contribution to it .He is shown as interfering in a system which Stuart claims is reforming itself from within ,and by so doing bringing about an avoidable conflict This is a gross distortion of the facts .Thus ,faced with such moral equivocation ,the best thing to do is enjoy it on an action movie level and here it works well .The action is lively and plentiful and the acting is pretty solid .Flynn is ideally cast as the archetypal military man -one who fights nobly for his cause ,despite his own doubts and de Havilland is excellent as the feisty tomboyish Kit Carson Halliday over whom Custer and Stuart bicker .Raymond Massey is hypnotic if hammy as Brown and there is a solid "best friend of the leading man "turn from Reagan ,whose character is allowed a few tentative pro-Brown remarks
One scene stands out -when Custer ,Sheridan ,Stuart and Pickett consult an Indian seeress they are told they will all be generals but will never again all meet as friend ;they react with uneasy laughter but in the scene we see the gathering clouds of the impending war ,
Muddy monochrome photography from the usually dependable Sal Polito does not help while Max Steiner's score is not his best by a long eway
Enjoy it as a vigorous and robust action picture from the great Michael Curtiz and this is okay but as a serious treatment of the issues it is sunk by its own timorousness and refusal to address reality

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Rare Gypsy Rose Lee outing.......2004-12-30

Not too many people know that Gypsy Rose Lee, who virtually invented modern striptease, also essayed a career as an actress; "Belle of the Yukon" is one of the few examples. It's a pleasant, if middling, Western comedy where you can also see Dinah Shore, another personality known for her achievements in other fields than the silver screen. Gypsy Rose doesn't strip, which may disappoint some people.

2 out of 5 stars failed effort.......2003-12-29

The reason to see this is because of Gyspy Rose Lee. It's amazing. Ethel Merman looked like her mother. But she doesn't do a strip tease here. Wasn't that was she was famous for. The costumes on Gyspy are fabulous but not Dinah's. Dinah Shore said she was ashamed of her movies and I can see why. Her hair is dyed an unfitting red here too. The only highlight is when she sings Sleighride in July.
The plot handsome Randolph Scott is a man with a past but he decides to change his ways and starts a bank. Not too memorable.

4 out of 5 stars Great chance to see Gypsy Rose Lee!.......2001-02-23

Yes, its a lightweight film. Its also a great chance to see some rare footage of Gypsy Rose Lee's short film career. Randolf Scott (a handsome matinee idol in his day) is a strong veteran actor and plays his contrived role to the hilt. Don't expect plot; just enjoy the rich visual experience of this vacuous film-as-entertainment novelty feature.

Description

Arliss Howard (Full Metal Jacket) and three-time Oscar® nominee* Debra Winger (Terms of Endearment) "achieve a tempestuous chemistry" (E!
