5 out of 5 stars Pure joy from start to finish!.......2007-09-17

I have several of Andre Rieu's DVDs and while most of them are enjoyable, this one is the best so far, in my opinion. Unlike one of your previous reviewers, I thought the Harlem Gospel Choir was great and suited a concert recorded in New York at Radio City Music Hall very well. I also like to see the audience and all the featured soloists so I enjoyed the way it was filmed. You almost feel that you are there! The repertoire was a 10 ... all among my favourite pieces and well chosen to capture many moods. Everything was played beautifully with contagious enthusiasm. This is definitely a keeper. You can't help but feel great after playing it.

3 out of 5 stars Very Disappointing.......2007-09-10

I saw part of the PBS broadcast and I ordered this DVD even though I had to wait several weeks for it. I was very disappointed. I enjoy watching and lisenting to Andre and his orchestra, not watching them take a back seat to the performers, soloists, etc. They (the singers and choirs)are all very talented, but I wanted to see and experience Andre. I have several of his earlier DVD's that do not rely on outside talents, and I enjoy them so much more. Andre, go back to your roots!

2 out of 5 stars Andre Rieu in New York 2006.......2007-09-10

I have almost everything Andre Rieu has and this was just passable. The Harlem folks are the ones that messed it up. Their music has no business being with Andre Rieu, who has class. I bought the DVD and am happy that I can just jump to the next track to avoid the Harlem music (if that is what you call music). Would I buy it again, well yes, but still with the opportunity to jump past some of the tracks. And Andre seemed to be "out of place here" and I think he was glad it was over. And there was only one song played by the little boy, disappointing.

5 out of 5 stars Andre Rieu is always a good show!.......2007-08-13

I don't know how Clayton G. Anderson's panties got in such a twist! (The one star review!) I have to whole heartedly DISagree with his review! If you are an Andre Rieu fan, this DVD is another excellent showing by Mr. Rieu. What Clayton must not understand is how Andre loves not only beautiful music but also bringing it to the masses! To me the real show is seeing how much he enjoys bringing entertainment to his audiences!

I am an upbeat kind of person. I enjoy watching people have a good time. When you watch this DVD enjoy how much, not only the audience or Andre, but his orchestra enjoys the evening.

This is another beautiful show. I have all of them and enjoy them over and over again! (I really love Carla! LMAO)

5 out of 5 stars Andre Rieu, The Music Man.......2007-08-11

Taped in July 2006 at the Radio City Music Hall, this exuberant concert starts with a grand entrance set to "76 Trombones." The glittering show is occasionally interspersed with wonderful scenes of New York in Summer, with its amazing diversity and energy, and the "Godfather Theme" includes some sunny footage from Italy. The superb musicianship of Rieu (who now plays a 1732 Stradivarius), along with his unique and terrific Johann Strauss Orchestra and Chorus, always keep a light heart and a touch of humor while they perform pop and classical favorites. Guest artists are the Harlem Gospel Choir and 5 year old child prodigy Akim Camara.

The old time razzle dazzle aura of the Radio City Music Hall is a perfect setting for Rieu, who has perfected the fine art of schmaltz down to the last note, and never fails to delight us with his entertaining offerings. The concert includes the following numbers:
"76 Trombones"
With Akim Camara: "Dance of the Fairies"
With the Harlem Gospel Choir: "Amen," "I Will Follow Him," "Nun's Choir," "Oh Happy Day," "When the Saints Go Marching In"
"The Life of the Artist"
"Blaze Away"
"My Way"
"Godfather Theme"
"Singing in the Rain"
"The Washington Post"
"Music of the Night"
"Don't Cry for Me Argentina"
"Hallelujah Chorus"
"Radetzki March"
"A Bright Young Man"
"America the Beautiful"

First sequels are the true test of an enduring movie franchise, and Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets passes with flying colors. Expanding upon the lavish sets, special effects, and grand adventure of Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone, Harry's second year at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry involves a darker, more malevolent tale (parents with younger children beware), beginning with the petrified bodies of several Hogwarts students and magical clues leading Harry (Daniel Radcliffe), Ron (Rupert Grint), and Hermione (Emma Watson) to a 50-year-old mystery in the monster-laden Chamber of Secrets. House elves, squealing mandrakes, giant spiders, and venomous serpents populate this loyal adaptation (by Sorcerer's Stone director Chris Columbus and screenwriter Steve Kloves), and Kenneth Branagh delightfully tops the supreme supporting cast as the vainglorious charlatan Gilderoy Lockhart (be sure to view past the credits for a visual punchline at Lockhart's expense). At 161 minutes, the film suffers from lack of depth and uneven pacing, and John Williams' score mostly reprises established themes. The young, fast-growing cast offers ample compensation, however, as does the late Richard Harris in his final screen appearance as Professor Albus Dumbledore. Brimming with cleverness, wonderment, and big-budget splendor, Chamber honors the legacy of J.K. Rowling's novels. --Jeff Shannon

1 out of 5 stars A series of incidents without any real storytelling.......2007-08-20

I can't understand the fascination with Potter! First of all, I took two Children's Literature courses in college when I was studying to be an English teacher, and was forced to read the first book. I never read it because I couldn't make it through the first page as it was the most boring page of words I'd ever read before. During the open-book test on the book, because I was FORCED TO, I painfully read through almost the entire book in one sitting in order to come up with the answers, this is how ridiculously easy the book is to read. I was horrified that I didn't like the book either, even after I did read it during testing; I was horrified because like another reviewer said: "I don't quite understand this Harry Potter phenomenon." You see, that makes me believe that either I'm crazy and everyone else is sane, or that I'm sane and everyone else is crazy! Anyhow, when I was young we didn't read books this stupid. Really. Even if they were childrens' books, we read classics, like Alice in Wonderland, which is much more complex, imaginative, and meaningful. To sum up, I did watch the first film and I didn't think it was bad; however, this one really bored me, especially near the end. I could not force myself to watch the ending, even after wasting time by watching most of it to begin with! I commented to my husband that the movie seemed to be one series of "surprises" and "coincidences" that kept it going, no real plot, just a series of occurences. I can't say this is storytelling, although to some it may be -- it's cheap storytelling, not masterful in the least, and it's hardly got any redeeming qualities to it. I'm just sorry in the end that such stuff is being revered by children today when great classics are being ignored.

Amazon.com essential video

A hallmark of the science fiction genre as well as a wry commentary on the political climate of the 1950s, The Day the Earth Stood Still is a sci-fi movie less concerned with special effects than with a social parable. A spacecraft lands in Washington, D.C., carrying a humanoid messenger from another world (Michael Rennie) imparting a warning to the people of Earth to cease their violent behavior. But panic ensues as the messenger lands and is shot by a nervous soldier. His large robot companion destroys the Capitol as the messenger escapes the confines of the hospital. He moves in with a family as a boarder and blends into society to observe the full range of the human experience. Director Robert Wise (West Side Story) not only provides one of the most recognizable icons of the science fiction world in his depiction of the massive robot loyal to his master, but he avoids the obvious camp elements of the story to create a quiet and observant story highlighting both the good and the bad in human nature. --Robert Lane

Description

The Day The Earth Stood Still depicts the arrival of an alien dignitary, Klaatu (Michael Rennie), who has come to earth with his deadly robot, Gort (Lock Martin), to deliver the message that earthlings must stop warring among themselves--or else. After being shot at by military guards, Klaatu is brought to a Washington, D.C. hospital, where he begs a sympathetic but frank Major White (Robert Osterloh) to gather all the world's leaders so he can tell them more specifically what he has come to warn them about. Losing patience, Klaatu slips into the human world, adapting a false identity and living at a boarding house where he meets a smart woman with a conscience and her inquisitive son. Both mother and son soon find themselves embroiled in the complex mystery of Klaatu, his message and the government's witch hunt for the alien.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars An enlightened message of peace or a plug for capital punishment? Many misinterpret this film!.......2007-09-09

The Day the Earth Stood Still always appears on any list of "the best sci fi films of all time." It's easy to see why. First, it's more serious and less campy than most 50s sci fi, as well as more intelligent than most sci fi films in general. Second, Robert Wise's direction is masterful. Wise also gave us The Haunting (about the best horror film ever made), The Andromeda Strain and Star Trek the Motion Picture (both sci fi masterpieces in their own right). Casting unknowns in the leads was a pivotal decision. Had Klaatu been played by Spencer Tracy (as was actually considered) rather than British actor Michael Rennie the film would have been far less convincing. Patricia Neal, another relative unknown, was also a good choice. The mood and ambiance of the film would not have been as effective without Bernard Hermann's score, which is one of his all-time best (second only to his score for Vertigo in my opinion). Other little touches came together nicely to polish this gem off, such as hiring a real scientist and mathematician to lend credence to the science and math appearing in the film (a move other sci fi films would do well to follow!--by the way, the equations on the blackboard are real, not gobbledygook) as well as hiring a real giant to play Gort. Interestingly, those with giantism in real life are often extremely weak. When Gort was supposed to lift Patricia Neal and carry her into the saucer the actor who played him could not lift her; this is why you can see all the black cables around Neal--she was actually supported by a crane. Also deserving of mention is the screenplay--it crackles with excellent dialogue and many memorable lines. Examples include (paraphrasing here): "It's terrible when people substitute fear for reason," "Nothing is strange about Washington!" and "They're not people, they're Democrats!"

With all this said it must be added that a great many people misinterpret this film! Yes, the film has a message of peace, but think, just how did the aliens erect their peace? This film is NOT about non-violent, enlightened aliens who come to show us the error of our ways. Far from it!! What does Klaatu actually say when he explains himself to the scientists? He says basically that the rule of law is imperative AND that a law is ONLY AS GOOD as the ability to enforce it. That's it. As any behaviorist knows, he says that punishment works only when punishment is swift, harsh (the "punishee" has to fear the punishment, else it isn't punishment at all!) and invariable. People ignore laws in the US because they know they'll probably get away with it. (Think about it. If you KNEW you'd get a ticket every time you sped, would you ever drive over the speed limit?) What Klaatu says--and this is what so many people amazingly miss--is that THEY TOO were violent, but that they created a race of robot police agents, of which Gort is only one, and that if any of them commit a violent act one of these robots comes and immediately annihilates them. Since no one wants to be disintegrated by a Gort, no one commits violent crimes. What this film is actually about is the effectiveness of law--that any law is only as effective as the threat that backs it up. (I don't want to get too political here--though people have been politicizing this film for years--but contrary to the liberal backing of the film, this is a very conservative message!) 4 out of 5 stars Corny but fun.......2007-08-17

Just like most of the 1950's classic black and white "monster" movies, this one is just as corny and "mild" compared to todays standards, but it's great fun. The acting is really pretty good - you find yourself drawn right into that boarding house where Bobby and his mother live (ok now her character name escapes me, but it's Patricia Neal)....and of course Gort standing guard at the spaceship does a tremendous job of making you feel like there is no way under the sun you're walking up that ramp towards the spaceship! (and he doesn't speak one single word) One blink of his super-duper evaporating x-ray and that's all it would take to convince me to get out of Dodge. Great fun - great for the family, and a must for your classic movie collection.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful Music.......2007-06-23

I really enjoyed the Platinum Tenors. Their voices blended so well. When they were singing in unison it was difficult to tell that it wasn't just one voice. When I listen to "The Three Tenors" I always feel like it is a competition, Not so with these guys.

The to Brazilian sopranos are magnificent. I especially liked the one who sang "Juliska from Budapest." She has a marvelous upper range and quite a stage presence. BTW, her name is Carla not Clara.

The Dutch Blonde, on the other hand, was a disappointment. She has a nice little voice, suitable for musicals and light opera, but not the caliber of the two Brazilians. She needs to work on her enunciation and pronunciation. There is a difference between "begged" and "bagged" as well as between "memory" and "mammary." She is the main squeeze of Pierre Rieu, Andre's son and and stage manager.

I got a kick out of the violinist playing the banjo, the clarinetist playing the bag pipes and the dancing harpist.

The brunette in the Choir (can 5 women be classified as a choir?) sure knows how to use her eyes.

I thought the choreography left much to be desired. Something you might expect from a high school production

I really enjoyed the bright colors in which the women members were dressed. The fact that everyone was smiling and seemed to be enjoying themselves was also a plus. I'm sure that much of that was arranged, but it came across well. The audience surely enjoyed themselves.

He is a bit of a ham, but it comes across well. BTW, that is a Strad he is waving all over.

Think A Summer Place, and you'll probably be humming Max Steiner's wonderfully romantic instrumental theme song, a hand-holding hit in 1959. The movie itself is similarly irresistible, a colorful soap opera about the passions of a pair of dewy-eyed teens and their straying parents. At an island resort in Maine, Sandra Dee and Troy Donahue (the reigning teen idols of the day) fall hard for each other. What they don't know is that her father (Richard Egan) and his mother (Dorothy McGuire), lovers 20 years earlier, have rekindled their affair. Both, inconveniently, have spouses, which is what makes this a soap opera. Lovers of camp will find much to savor in the incredible '50s attitudes, and in the innocence of supervirgin Dee ("Johnny, have you been bad with girls?"). Yet the sincerity of writer-director Delmer Daves, cowriter of An Affair to Remember, comes shining through the corn; and the grown-up affair anticipates The Bridges of Madison County by 30 years. --Robert Horton

Illicit romance take center stage when a wealthy family set off for a summer seaside vacation.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars In most 1950s Hollywood flicks, sex is subtext, but in A Summer Place sex stands front and center at rigid attention. .......2007-09-11

Director Dellmar Daves throws together six people bleary-eyed with lust under the roof of a summer guest house in photogenic Maine. The oldsters include badly married Dorothy McGuire, reduced to taking in renters, and Arthur Kennedy, her blue-blooded souse of a husband, who sets the overripe tone by describing Pine Island as "a perverted Garden of Eden where the pine and the salt air seem to act as an aphrodisiac. Into the mix come filthy rich, equally badly married vacationers Richard Egan and his wife, played to dykey perfection by Constance Ford.

Before one can say "old flames," McGuire's gazes longingly out her bedroom window at Egan -- the ex-lifeguard who deflowered her in her teens but was too poor to marry her, now the humpiest research chemist ever to strain the seams of a LaCoste. In no time flat, the old lovers are stealing away to deserted boathouses. "I'm hungry,"McGuire confesses, "for everything that hasn't been." Teen lust has its day, too. When a teen Sandra Dee whines about the "armor-lated bra" and "cast-iron girdle" her mother buys to hide her budding curves, Papa Egan -- with whom Sandra likes to snuggle in bed to confess "naughty" thoughts -- hurls them into the ocean. Mommy Dearest Ford reasserts her authority by commanding Dee, upon arriving at her room in the inn, to "get the disinfectant and clean this bathroom. And don't forget the toilet seat!" But we know what repression breeds, right? Barely after they have been introduced, Dee and Troy Donahue (the innkeepers' pouty glambomb of a son) dive into a tacky soundstage woods to dry-hump. Although Troy and Sandra strike zero romantic sparks, Max Steiner's famous, lilting theme does the trick.

Dee's mother spies on the young couple ("You can't let him think that your kisses come cheap!"), and after the teens spend the night together, she greets her daughter with a waiting doctor, bellowing, "Take off every stitch and let him examine you!" The director zooms in on Dee for big, fat, hissy-fit closeups. "I want my fatha! I want my fatha!" she screams. Yes, doll, we know, but all you're going to get is pregnant by Troy.

The couple finds acceptance with her father and his mother, now married. The chintz moment supreme, the scene that put the Production Code seal of approval on all the heavy breathing that has preceded it, comes when the director cuts from an exterior of Egan and McGuire's spectacular Frank Lloyd Wright love nest to a living room interior where our four stars, cozily domesticated, talk sex and chow down supper on TV trays. (John Waters and David Lynch, take a note.)

5 out of 5 stars Two love stories.......2007-09-08

Great acting, great story of two couples from different generations. Both couples fight societal convention and thus the conflict that plays out so well in this movie. Lots of ocean and beach scenes. Movie features a Frank Loyd Wright home.

2 out of 5 stars Why did I bother........2007-08-30

Having watched this movie many years ago I thought it would be just as good but I found it dated and boring, except for the music.

4 out of 5 stars One Torrid Summer.......2007-08-30

The theme of "A Summer Place," especially when crooned by The Lettermen, has the ability to conjure up images of beaches and sailboats even in the depths of winter. Schmaltzy but pleasing, it perfectly suits a movie which at first glance is the soapiest of soap operas. The 1959 film, based upon the torrid novel of Sloan Wilson, was scandalous because of the topics of adolescent fornication and pregnancy in an era when teenagers were supposed to be innocent. Set in New England, for the most part, "A Summer Place" debuted in the cinema as Calvinist America stood on the brink of cultural and sexual revolution. The book even more than the movie shows the reaction of the new generation to the Manichean attitudes which tended to flow as an undercurrent in American society. Puritanical repression is as different from genuine purity as ice is from fire; when sexuality is rejected because it is considered dirty or unclean, rather than restrained for the sake of love, then a monster is unleashed.

As the Richard Egan character reacts against his wife's disdain of the marriage bed by rekindling passion with his lost love (Dorothy McGuire), two families are ruined and all hell breaks loose. When the adults break the rules, they open up the way for the adolescents to break them, too. And while the grown-ups are able to piece their lives back together again, the youngsters are nearly destroyed. It is one of the films which best show the effects of divorce and remarriage upon the children involved. In the light of the confusion and torment suffered by the two teenagers, played by Sandra Dee and Troy Donahue, the affair embarked upon by Egan and McGuire appears irresponsible rather than romantic, although one cannot help but pity them for their impossible marriages. When people break commitments in order to find happiness and fulfillment, they must be aware of the high price to be paid, and the one to pay it might very probably be an innocent child.

4 out of 5 stars My Wife's Favorite Film; BUT picture quality Flawed.......2007-08-15

Just arrived on DVD. Amazon experience is always wonderful.

My beef is with Warner Brothers; regarding the print. I have ordered a lot of product from Amazon; both in CD's and DVD's and this is the first that came with a flawed picture. NOT Amazon's fault.

On the upper left hand part of the screen you sometimes see what is a red X. Looks like fluff or dirt. Then you see (I think) more dirt. This time like a green piece of fluff on the lens.

I gather this was taken from the VHS version and not cleaned up. Other than that it is everything my wife could desire. We just got back from Carmel and saw all the shooting locations. We loved it!!!

Amazon.com essential video

They don't really make many romantic comedies like Notting Hill anymore--blissfully romantic, sincerely sweet, and not grounded in any reality whatsoever. Pure fairy tale, and with a huge debt to Roman Holiday, Notting Hill ponders what would happen if a beautiful, world-famous person were to suddenly drop into your life unannounced and promptly fall in love with you. That's the crux of the situation for William Thacker (Hugh Grant), who owns a travel bookshop in London's fashionable Notting Hill district. Hopelessly ordinary (well, as ordinary as you can be when you're Hugh Grant), William is going about his life when renowned movie star Anna Scott (Julia Roberts) walks into his bookstore and into his heart. After another contrived meet-cute involving spilled orange juice, William and Anna share a spontaneous kiss (big suspension of disbelief required here), and soon both are smitten. The question is, of course, can William and Anna reconcile his decidedly commonplace bookseller existence and her lifestyle as a jet-setting, paparazzi-stalked celebrity? (Take a wild guess at the answer.) Smartly scripted by Richard Curtis (Four Weddings and a Funeral) and directed by Roger Michell (Persuasion), Notting Hill is hardly realistic, but as wish fulfillment and a romantic comedy, it's irresistible. True, Roberts doesn't really have to stretch very far to play a big-time actress who makes $15 million per movie, but she's more winning and relaxed than she's been in years, and Grant is sweetly understated as a man blindsided by love. Together, in moments of quiet, they're a charming couple, and you can feel her craving for real love and his awe and amazement at the wonderful person for whom he has fallen. The only blight on the film is its overbearing pop soundtrack, though Elvis Costello's heart-wrenching version of "She" gets poignant exposure. With Rhys Ifans as Grant's scene-stealing, slovenly housemate and Alec Baldwin in a sly, perfectly cast cameo. --Mark Englehart

Customer Reviews:

2 out of 5 stars Yuck.......2007-07-31

Personally I thought this was a boring film with phoned-in performances by both Hugh Grant and Julia Roberts, and what little plot there was had no suspense or mystery or charm whatever and the entire project lacked the style usually found in Richard Curtis' work. Even a strong supporting cast that included Gina McKee was not much of a boost. I usually go for these sorts of movies but this is one Britcom (very little "com" to it, by the way) I didn't enjoy.

3 out of 5 stars Romantic Comedy - Hugh Grant.......2007-07-23

I enjoy happy endings and romantic comedies. Not a thought provoking movie, but a good one when one is in the mood for a good chick flick. Plus Hugh Grant is eye candy...

5 out of 5 stars classic romantic comedy.......2007-05-13

Notting Hill is a modern single man's fairy tale and I don't mean that in a bad way. Julie Roberts never looked better, Hugh Grant is his charming best, the supporting cast are all likeable. The story is believeable and beautifully directed. If your like romantic comedies or are just looking to watch a good movie that you will walk away from feeling good then "Notting Hill" is the movie for you.

5 out of 5 stars Love Conquers All in Notting Hill.......2007-05-10

This is a charming movie that I've seen several times and will probably see again. It's an upbeat, miracles happen, "celebrities are people too" kind of movie.

Boy meets girl, girl says "NO", then changes her mind. And keeps changing it. Anyone who has said "No", when his/her heart was yelling, "Yes Yes Yes ", can relate to this movie a lot.

One of the aspects that I found so interesting was the rigidly controlled structure under which Anna was required to live her life. And how relentlessly she had to smile, regardless of how she was feeling. It must be tough to have to be "on" so much of the time. NOTTING HILL gave us a window into the world in which celebrities live and some of the challenges they face.

This is a heartwarming, funny movie starring 2 talented actors playing 2 really likable characters. I have a weakness for movies with American/British romantic pairings, since Americans and Brits are culturally so different; in this movie, the plot is sweetened with the added romantic complication of wealthy/famous and not so wealthy or famous. It's a heartwarming rollicking ride !

I highly recommend Notting Hill.

5 out of 5 stars "Surreal, But Nice": Pleasant Romantic Comedy from Richard Curtis.......2007-04-18

Of course in real life this would not happen, at least not to me. William, owner of a small bookshop in Notting Hill, not only falls in love with a Hollywood star Anna Scott (played by Julia Roberts who is virtually playing herself), but also he really begins to go out with her. Can an ordinary guy be the true love of the star whose face covers magazines every week? Here is a one story, delightfully romantic and told with humor, about the possibility of such a romance. The story sounds implausible, but still a very good one.

Despite some incredible situations, the chemistry between the two leads makes us forget them temporarily, and their romance is enchanting (and a bit predictable) to the end. In addition to Julia Roberts and Hugh Grant (and their undeniable star power), the film is supported by gifted actors playing colorful characters; they are Gina McKee, James Dreyfus, Emma Chambers and inimitable Rhys Ifans as Spike, the most unusual lodger in London. Amusing cameos of Alec Baldwin, Matthew Modine and young Mischa Barton as child actor (like she was then) shoud not be missed.

Pleasant romantic comedy "Notting Hill" is written by Richard Curtis, whose works before this one include equally romantic "Four Weddings and a Funeral" and less successful "The Tall Guy," both of which are based on the American-in-London situations. His script of "Notting Hill" is always witty, giving us some sly comments on human relations and film industry. (In fact, I am using it as the text for my English class in Japan.)

Some people may say this is not real Notting Hill (you don't see Notting Hill Carnival, for example) and probably they are right because, as I said, in real London this would not happen. It belongs to the ever-overcrowding genre of romantic comedy where romance means a lot, and in this respect "Notting Hill" is a success.

The socially restricted lives of 18th-century women hardly seems like a subject that would inspire dozens of 20th (and 21st) century adaptations--but the brilliant novels of Jane Austen are flush with sparkling dialogue, razor-sharp wit, marvelously realized characters that range from adorably sympathetic to grotesquely comic, and--above all--ingeniously intricate plots, which arrive at a seemingly inevitable happy conclusion yet keep you seized with suspense every inch of the way. The Jane Austen Collection pulls together six BBC miniseries from 1971 through 1987, one for each of Austen's much-beloved books.

Unsurprisingly, the gems of the lot are also the best of the novels: Pride and Prejudice and Emma. Pride and Prejudice, expertly translated to the screen by novelist Fay Weldon, skillfully chronicles the ups and downs of the sensible but quick to judge Elizabeth Bennet (the adorable Elizabeth Garvie) and the snooty Mr. Darcy (played with an imperious scowl by David Rintoul). Any adaptation of Emma rests firmly on its central character, and Doran Godwin wonderfully captures Emma Woodhouse's resilience, determination, and exasperating self-satisfaction. Definitely the funniest of Austen's novels, Emma's satirical humor is perfectly balanced with romantic yearning, and this 1972 version succeeds delightfully.

Persuasion, though more melancholy in tone, has a wonderfully sympathetic heroine in Anne Elliot (played by the graceful Ann Fairbanks), who once turned away the man she loved but is given the chance, seven years later, to set things right. Sense and Sensibility suffers from comparison to the star firepower and cinematic sweep of the 1995 movie with Emma Thompson (a must-see for any Austen fan), but the dueling characters of gracious Elinore and headstrong Marianne, two sisters struggling with fallen fortunes, make for enjoyable viewing in this 1981 adaptation. Mansfield Park has perhaps the dullest hero and heroine of any Austen novel, yet the story zips along, powered by some of Austen's most outrageous supporting characters, here brought to deliciously comic life by Anna Massey and Angela Pleasence. Northanger Abbey satirizes gothic romances and the overheated imaginations that loved them; but though the tone is more broad and melodramatic than most of Austen, this 1987 adaptation suits the novel and rounds out this very satisfying boxed set. --Bret Fetzer

4 out of 5 stars Dry, but great!.......2007-09-03

This collection is wonderful, but you should expect it to be VERY dry. The dialog is virtually word-for-word from Jane Austen's novels, and has no bells and whistles. If you're a devout Austen fan (as I am), you'll enjoy this collection. But if you're more into the dramatic, get your pillow ready!

2 out of 5 stars Has the sixties look........2007-07-12

I really liked Pride and Prejudice, Persuasion was true to the Austin book, but the casting wa strange, Emma and Mr. Knightley had no spark, Norlthanger Abbey was so badly cast and acted I could not watch more than a few minutes. Since that bad experience I have not had the desire to watch Mansfield Park, but will do so one day. On the whole, the collection was disappointing.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful stories.......2007-06-13

I received this collection from my children who know that I am a Jane Austen fan. The DVD's are outstanding. There are several episodes of each story, so you can break them up if you want to - for instance, Pride and Prejudice is comprised of 5 separate episodes and requires both sides of the DVD. The adaptations are excellent - the characters are well fleshed out and believable in the ir roles. If you are a Jane Austen fan, you will love the adaptations, since they follow Ms. Austen's original story lines much more closely than some of the popular movies do. You can recognize lines from the books. Get them - you won't regret it!

4 out of 5 stars BBC Jane Austen set.......2007-05-26

The BBC productions are good, but dated. It doesn't matter, however, if you are a Jane Austen fan.

4 out of 5 stars very good productions.......2007-05-07

I have enjoyed these movies very much. It is interesting to see the older versions.

Everybody important from the first film, including the writing-directing team of Charles Shyer and Nancy Meyers, regroups for this sequel involving a pair of pregnancies. Steve Martin's patriarch has a crisis when his married daughter (Kimberly Williams) is with child, and an even bigger one when his middle-aged wife (Diane Keaton) announces that another bambino is on the way. Martin Short is more effectively used this time around (he played the wedding coordinator in the first film), and while this movie's inevitable climax has both women giving birth on the same chaotic night, the overall effect of the film is less contrived than its predecessor. --Tom Keogh

5 out of 5 stars Great.......2007-06-10

This is one of the best sequels I have ever seen. It is funny and at the same time very sweet and touching. Steve Martin is great as the unwilling soon-to-be-father/grandfather. The rest of the cast is as good as they were in the first part. Definitely worth a watch by all daughters who have a very loving and protective father!

3 out of 5 stars Is Great!.......2007-04-10

I really like the 2 won better but the other one you need to see first!

1 out of 5 stars The first one is much better..........2006-10-12

I was very disappointed in this movie. As much as I love Steve Martin, this movie just didn't do anything for me. I had to make myself watch it in its entirety. It was too unrealistic; a mother and daughter being pregnant at the same time, giving birth on the same exact day, in the same hospital across the hall from one another. Give me a break. And what are the chances of you buying your house back one day after you sell it by just one stoke of a pen by simply reaching into your pocket and whipping out a $100,000 check? Yeah, I see that happen all the time. And gee whiz, Annie's husband walks into the hospital after a business trip in Tokyo just in the nick of time, how convenient. And is it too much to ask to have just one movie where the pregnant woman gets a normal ride to the hospital? The wild ride to the hospital scene is played (Look Who's Talking?, Nine Months). And just what kind of job did the father of the bride have? A baby suite? How fortunate we all would be if we could toss thousands of dollars on a single room in a house that's only going to be used for a couple of months. Now that's what I call living! And Franck, not only does he coordinate weddings but he throws in baby showers here and there as well. Oh, and he also designs baby suites. Maybe he does barmitzvahs too. This movie would have been a lot better if it only focused on Annie being pregnant. The Banks having 3 children spread out across 3 different generations was a bit much. "Is that your grandbaby?" "No, that's my daughter." "Hey, is that your sister?" "No, that's my aunt." "Hey, it was nice meeting your brother." "Are you kidding me, that's my nephew!" There were no funny moments in this movie and seeing Steve Martin as a brunette, even if it was only briefly, was just painful. His hair has been gray ever since I can remember and he should keep it that way at all times. Do yourself a favor and pass on this movie. The first one is much better. If I could have given it a zero star I would have. Sorry Steve, I still love you but the next time I want to see you in a good movie, I'll just pull out "The Jerk","Parenthood" or "Housesitter". As a matter of fact, I'm planning to take this movie to the Thrift store the next time I donate.

1 out of 5 stars Narrow View of Normal.......2006-09-18

What's wrong with raising a baby in a beach house? Am I the only person who doesn't live in a mansion? Do you have to be rich to be happy?

This movie, and the original remake (since that's what these films are) tell a lot of lies about what people should expect life to be. Therefore, they are not fun. All the humor evaporates when you realize it is attempting to tell you "your life should be this way" or you're wrong if it is not. Unfortunately, not everyone has a picture perfect life.

5 out of 5 stars Didn't Think It Could Get Any Better!.......2006-09-13

I remember watching "Father of the Bride" over and over again growing up...dreaming of my own wedding! It was just one of those movies that you can never really get tired of. I was excited when they made "Father of the Bride 2" , but I really didn't have high hopes for it because I thought there was no way it could compete with the first...boy was I wrong. This movie is just as great as the first. With mother and daughter having a baby at the same time and all the same great characters back from the first movie...there was never a dull moment! If you liked the first you should love this movie!

Those who have enjoyed this program on PBS need only be told that it is available on home video. André Rieu is a master of light classical music, and here he is at his best. The program was taped live, outdoors in the Piazza de la Republica in the Italian cty of Cortona. Rieu addresses the audience in fluent but sometimes charmingly awkward Italian, with English subtitles. From the opening moments he has the vast crowd in the palm of his hand. They whistle for him in "Chanson d'amour," clap in unison for the "Toreador Song" from Carmen, the "Radetzky" march, and the galloping finales of the William Tell and Light Cavalry overtures, and sing along in "La donna e mobile," the drinking song from La traviata, and, most movingly, the Italian national anthem and "Va pensiero," which is almost a national anthem.

The music is basic classical top-40, with an emphasis on opera and a lot of Italian music, including "The Carnival of Venice" and the Grand March from Aida. The performances are full of energy and technically skilled. Rieu conducts, plays his violin, and generously shares the spotlight, notably with soprano Carmen Monarca, mezzo-soprano Carla Malfioletti, and several singing and dancing young ladies who might have stepped out of a Botticelli painting. Visuals include, besides the concert, a charming Tuscan landscape and a ride in a Venetian gondola. --Joe McLellan

5 out of 5 stars Great Music.......2007-08-20

I love music and I have been very fortunate to listen to Andre Rieu's lively concerts. It is really great to see his enthusiasm and the support of his entire orchestra. I also like the soloists who sing with him.

Thank you

5 out of 5 stars Romance!.......2007-08-08

I have several of Andre Rieu's DVD's and each one is a joy to watch. The Piazza in Cortona is transformed with the beautiful lighting. Andre always "specializes" his concerts to his audiences, too. I cannot complete this review without saying something about the artistic camera work. The way the cameras capture the orchestra, but in particular the focus a person in the audience during a certain piece of music, just completes the whole mood. This is a lovely concert.

5 out of 5 stars We Haven't Left Italy Since!!!!!.......2007-05-13

Watching this video makes our family feel as though we've been magically transported to Tuscany and haven't left there since! What a magical, lively, soothing masterpiece of modern day classical music coupled with just the right mix of Rieus' entertaining charisma set in one the the most beautiful locations in the world!!! A definite item for the do not miss list!!!

5 out of 5 stars Don't miss the wonder of Andre Rieu in Tuscany.......2007-05-03

On April 21st, Alessandra Prado, Carmen Bradley, Lina Navarini, Alexander J. Ariano and I had the opportunity to see Andre Rieu, LIVE, at the Bank Atlantic Center, in Sunrise, Florida, which he kept up calling Fort Lauderdale.

As he enters the room, the sounds of his violin capture our spirits and we knew we were in for a delightful experience. All orchestra members dressed to replicate the times when the Waltz was at its best, to share the magic of Vienna with fans, and to provide us with sheer enchantment through his music.

This is the second time we choose to see him in South Florida and something tells me that we shall continue to go to his concerts for as we watch him we fall under the spell of a man, who seems to love what he does so much, that as we watch we are filled with joy, as he conducts and plays some of the best music ever written.

So, we bought his Tuscany DVD to enjoy this program, which was taped live, outdoors in the Piazza de la Republica of the Italian city of Cortona. One of the amazing characteristics of Andre Rieu is his ability to speak whatever language his audience speaks, and here his charming Italian pronunciation captures our hearts.

This DVD offers English subtitles, an excellent feature if you do not want to miss any of his oratory, which puts his audience in sheer delight.

The music is superb, from the love theme of The Godfather, to Chanson d'Amour, to the classic William Tell Overture, to one of my favorite songs, La Paloma. He plays the Italian National Anthem to the delight of all present.

As with all his DVDs, all we have to do is close our eyes and see him on stage, his broad smile worn as a badge of courage to live life to its fullest, the twinkle in his eye making us wonder what to do to make sure we live our lives in such a way that we too learn to share the best of ourselves with humanity.

Sincerely thank my good fortune to be alive during the times when Andre Rieu is with us, for I have enjoyed his music tremendously.

Our group has decided to follow Andre Reiu's recommendations and we are planning to travel to Vienna 2008... to enjoy his music in Vienn
