4 out of 5 stars Good concert, except..........2007-04-11

CO%CA are an amazing band. They released LIVE AT THE STARLAND BALLROOM in 2005, which is an amazing concert. They released another DVD a year after called THE LAST SUPPER: LIVE AT THE HAMMERSTEIN BALLROOM, which is their best concert, and it makes up for my not being able to go to their December show in 2006 (:-().

However, as much as I am honored to rave about the concert, I'll go over the pros and cons:

PROS:
-Affordable price
-Includes 3 videos from the singles off the new(est) album
-Amazing audio and picture quality of the concert makes you feel like you're at the concert
-Light show is SPECTACULAR
-Nice to see a concert of their Good Apollo tour

CONS:
-Firstly, if it's a concert supporting GAIBS4V1FFTTEOM, why are only 4 songs pefrormed off of it? Key tracks like "Mother May I" or "Crossing the Frame" are not pefrormed. Theys till peform their other signature tracks.
-The editing! HORRIBLE! If COLUMBIA edits the next DVD, I'm NOT buying it. They did a spectacular job for the other concert, why not for this one?
-Why is the swearing bleeped out?
-The back of the DVD says something about there being an interview with Claudio Sanchez. Well, if the 1 minute, 30-second discussion with the fans and the 15-second reponse from Claudio is considered an "interview", well then, there ya go.

So this is not a bad buy at all, I liked the concert (and I WILL get tickets for their Edmonton show supporting their album coming out in the fall), and worth buying if you're a Coheed fan like me.

5 out of 5 stars amazing.......2007-03-12

if you like Coheed, even a little bit, you will love this DVD. All of their dvds and performances are amazing. This one has a lot of interviews with fans and with Claudio, which the other DVDs don't really have. If you saw the Co&Ca/A7X tour, this is the SAME show. Definitely recommended by a true fan.

5 out of 5 stars Amazing DVD.......2007-01-10

This is a definite must for any Co&Ca fan. The concert is absoltly amazing and the music videos (the first three singles from Good Apollo) are fantastic and the interview with Claudio is damn cool.

5 out of 5 stars The Last Supper.......2006-11-12

This is Co & Ca live at their best. Wonderful performance (so that it seems short), worth every penny. The light show is great, and the interviews with fans, and Claudio (the interview with Claudio is quite short, maybe two minutes together, and is split, showing a bit after every couple songs) are a great addition. The music videos are also a nice bonus (Welcome Home, The Suffering, Ten Speed). The only drawback is that only a few songs of the new album appear (Ten Speed, Wake Up, The Suffering, Welcome Home, The Final Cut). None of the songs are edited (for example, Welcome Home still says the F-word) yet in the behind the scene footage or when Claudio is talking to the audience, when ever a profanity is uttered it is edited out with a *beep*. Pointless, but it really does not damage the quality of the DVD. It would have been nice to have a bonus cd with the concert dvd. Yeah, the concert is that good. The DVD is well worth the money, and for any Coheed & Cambria fan, buy this. You'll love it.

5 out of 5 stars A Little Too Soon After Live At The Starland Ballroom???.......2006-11-02

Well, it seems that with the release of Good Apollo, I'm Burning Star IV Volume One: From Fear Through The Eyes of Madness, Coheed and Cambria have set their sights on the Hammerstein Ballroom for what is sure to be their greatest recorded performance to date. Although, as much as I am honored to parade Co&Ca as my all-time favorite band, there are a few gripes I have with this dvd. First, if it's a live dvd for the release of Good Apollo, then why are there only four tracks from the album presented live. Songs like Apollo 1: The Writing Writer or even Crossing The Frame are nowhere to be seen however, at least they maintain their anthemic songs like IKSSE:3 and Delerium Trigger, but with being off the heels of the Starland Ballroom dvd and the latest cd release, it would have been nice to see a more ecletic grouping of songs. The dvd packagae also states that an interview with Claudio is on the dvd, well if they consider the all of a minute and a half discussion with the fans and a 20 second response from Claudio as an "interview" then I guess you got it. There is also no real "behind the scenes footage" only but a few short minutes of warm-up and that's about it. Having 3 videos from Good Apollo was a nice addition, but their definetly could have been more. The biggest overall gripe is the editing of the dvd. I'm pretty sure that Equal Vision Records is proud to stand by Coheed and Cambria in any venture they take but, to have Columbia Records edit the few curse words from Josh at the beginning and Claudio's few expletives during the set is just plain stupid. Overall, the actual performance is amazing, and the improv at the end of The Final Cut is one of the best I have ever heard. If your an avid Coheed and Cambria fan as I am, then this release is an absolute must have. Otherwise, sticking with just the cd/dvd combo of Live at The Starland Ballroom seems to be a little more bang for your buck.

Painted in mile-wide strokes of black satirical comedy, The Last Supper turns intolerance into a parlor trick, then repeats it ad nauseam in case we missed the joke. Still, redundancy can be fun when applied to the premeditated murder of right-wing extremists by self-righteous left-wing zealots; director Stacy Title is an equal-opportunity offender, never taking sides. The grisly high jinks commence when a truck-driving, child-molesting, Hitler-loving ex-Marine (Bill Paxton, acing the role) is accidentally killed while dining with a clutch of snobby liberal grad students, played with uniform excellence by Cameron Diaz (showing early promise), Ron Eldard, Courtney B. Vance, Annabeth Gish, and coproducer Jonathan Penner. Having acquired a taste for blood, the wine-poisoning liberals stage "last suppers" with hand-picked targets (Charles Durning, Mark Harmon, Jason Alexander, and ultimately Ron Perlman), eventually attracting a suspicious sheriff (fine work by SNL alumnus Nora Dunn). It's got all the subtlety of a pile-driver, but The Last Supper craftily defends free speech by exposing its most vicious violations. --Jeff Shannon

1 out of 5 stars Quite possbily the dumbest, most unrealistic movie ever made........2007-06-25

Hard to watch since you could drive a semi through the plot holes, and the ending should have been so obvious to the main characters.

Plus, NO ONE ever told their friends where they were going for dinner?

Just a terrible movie through and through.

5 out of 5 stars The Last Supper.......2007-03-10

Excellent movie with a wonderful reversal at the end. Good for its sociopolitical rammifications

4 out of 5 stars great little film.......2006-12-18

To express it in non-American political terms:

The movie revolves around 1990s students who, being middle-class with some conscience, agonize and cannot decide if they are good liberals or genuine leftists. By killing people who express morally and socially repressive views, they think that they have found a solution. Nevertheless, they are firmly stuck within the ideology of individualism (hence, the initial naive, or even stupid premise that if you eliminated Hitler, fascism would not have come about).

Finally, they are tricked and killed by a wily demagogue who, being himself a liberal in the 19th c sense (ie he does not advocate monarchy and accepts the trappings of a liberal democracy such as parliaments and elections), poses the same question that has crippled the US left for most of the century: free speech (notably, the movie does not problematize big media -- it's all an individual choice, right?).

You could argue the Clintonite intelligentsia lefty-liberal students get what they deserve from a fellow liberal on the rightist side of the spectrum. This is what makes the movie so amusing and appealing to all kinds of American liberals, whether on the left or on the right: is it a tragedy, a comedy or a farce?

We'll see the next round of this game in 2008, folks...and it won't be for the better of most of us, especially for the conservative pinkoes among us.

5 out of 5 stars Fundamentalist Librals yeah look what they could do.......2006-10-03

You have heard of fundamentalist Christians and Muslims and what that can do. Look what could theoretically happen when a bunch of librals gets fundamentalist too. This is not a movie about christ and the last supper. This is about the people at the table you see on the cover. I do not want to give this away. It is a great movie. Look at what happened when these people's ideas went astray.

5 out of 5 stars DARK SATIRE OF THE LEFT AND RIGHT.......2006-09-28

"The Last Supper" is a great gem of a film that spoofs both the left and the right. The story centers around five liberal graduate students who gather around the dinner table not only for their meal, but to take in the days political and social talk. Enter a guest whose car has broken down (Bill Paxton). He has been given a lift by (Ron Eldard). Offered food and shelter, the conversation shifts to politics. And here is where the film takes off. Paxton is a veteran of the Gulf War and ridicules his guests as pseudo-intellectuals who only talk, but never act.

However, things turn for the worse when he pulls out a knife and threatens one of the liberal students. In turn, he is accidentally killed. When the others find out later that he was wanted in the connection with a missing child [suspected serial killer] they believe they have done good. Moreover, they take it to another step: such as inviting rightwing demogogues and other extremists to their weekend dinner with the intent to kill them, and therefore, in their eyes, rid the world of evil. Only their own moral and ethical tenets are put to the test when they begin to kill anyone who happens to harbor even the slightest rightward tilt.

One of the funniest guests is a pastor [Charles Durning] who happens to believe AIDS is Gods will, and that those who suffer from it are only being made to suffer due to Gods will. His character is very funny. However, when they happen to stumble upon their greatest nemesis, [Ron Perlman] who portrays a sort of Rush Limbaugh type character, his logic challenges them at the dinner table. In turn they choose not to kill him. [All five must agree to the killing]. If any single one of them say no, then they cannot go ahead with the killing.

This largely forgotten classic dark-comedy is full of funny wit. Both the guests with their extreme rightwing views; and their five liberal hosts, make for one funny and witty satire of both the extreme elements of the left and the right. The writing is very witty as both the liberal students as well as their rightwing guests are parodied to the hilt. I have this film on DVD, however, amazon has it listed only as a VHS. If you can, get hold of a copy, it is well worth owning. Highly recommended. [Stars: 5+]

1 out of 5 stars Confused film features a confused, "Arian" Jesus.......2005-03-27

I wanted to like this video. Really, I did.

The animation is crisp, the voice acting excellent and the pacing holds the attention of all but the most distracted children. But "Greatest Heroes and Legends of the Bible: The Last Supper, Crucifixion and Resurrection" is a deeply flawed and -- dare I say it -- heretical piece of cinema.

My guard went up when I brought the film home from the store, flipped over the clam-shell case and read "Jesus retires to a garden to pray, but is captured by soldiers before dawn, having been betrayed by Judas, one of His disciples. Within a short time He is crucified but does not die -- not in any meaningful sense."

Full stop.

Just as there can be no Redemption without the cross, there can be no Resurrection without death. When Scripture and 2,000 years of Tradition assert that Jesus died, it means He was D-E-A-D, not merely pretending to die as various gnostic heretics asserted during the first few centuries of Church history.

Likewise, during Charlton Heston's introduction, he suggests that "this young man Jesus didn't know and understand the Father's plan. After all he said 'my God, my God, why have you forsaken me'."

In reality, Jesus is citing a psalm that concerns a just man wronged. One of the bedrock Christian beliefs is that Jesus Christ is God. The notion that the Redemption confused Him is utter nonsense. One would have hoped that the definition of Christ's divinity at the Council of Nicea in 325 had put to rest the Arian heresy once and for all. But there it is, in the mouth of Charlton "Moses" Heston.

I literally paused the DVD player within the first thirty seconds of this video for a "teaching moment" with the children to explain why what Heston said was wrong.

There are also various ad-libbed statements inserted into Christ's mouth that have more to do with the director's interests than with presenting the life of Christ.

The entire "Heroes and Legends" series is "advised" by representatives of the United Methodist Church and Hebrew Union College. They must have either slept through this DVD's production or skipped Sunday school.

Their advice brings to mind what C.S. Lewis said about authentic theology[*]: "Theology is practical, especially now. In the old days, when there was less education and discussion, perhaps it was possible to get on with a very few simple ideas about God. But it is not so now. Everyone reads, everyone hears things discussed. Consequently, if you do not listen to Theology, that will not mean that you have no ideas about God. It will mean that you have a lot of the wrong ones."

There are "wrong ones" aplenty in this little film.

Christians seeking a truer, orthodox depiction of the Gospel should spend the extra $5 and buy "The Miracle Maker".

There was something genuinely heartwarming about the decision by Black Sabbath's founding members to take to the road again in 1999. The fractious intra-band relationships that have characterized Black Sabbath's long career were a major inspiration for the writers of This Is Spinal Tap, and so the Sabs' reunion created something pleasingly symmetrical and evocative of the closing scenes of that fine film.

The concert footage was taken from six of the concerts on that tour. It is conclusive proof that the original quartet of Osbourne, Iommi, Butler, and Ward (or, in Osbourne's words, "four dickheads from Aston, near Birmingham") were every bit as exuberantly juvenile a rock & roll band in their early 50s as their late teens. Also included is a sketchy biography and interviews with the band by Henry Rollins, one of the countless contemporary musicians influenced by Sabbath. It's a nice idea, but the only real weakness of the package is that Ozzy is never granted time to wheel out any of his peerless reserve of grotesque rock & roll anecdotes. Nevertheless, the already formidable case for Osbourne's knighthood is strengthened further. --Andrew Mueller, Amazon.co.uk

4 out of 5 stars More of a Documentary than true concert footage!.......2007-06-18

I will admit that I was a little surprised to find out that most of the talking with the band members throughout this DVD was done during the tunage parts. However unlike most, I really liked the way this DVD flows together. Yes the music is interrupted in mid song from time to time, but the way they've done it, truly ads something to the very tune that's being presented at that time. To hear these guys sitting back and discussing what they were/are thinking about each song is truly amazing. To hear the heartfelt laughs from all the members again after years of issues between them is great. They are obviously very happy about the chance to play together again and this show tells you that. The song selection is great and the sound is better than average, but not outstanding.

This DVD is more of a documentary style look at a truly iconic band than true concert footage. The concert footage, which is great by the way is just the topping to this reunion cake. I unlike many others here, loved to hear from each members of this great band. The tunes only add to the experience.

Well Done boys, you've brought us a new understanding of what those early daze must have been like.

Sabbath Rulz!

4 out of 5 stars Black Sabbath.......2007-05-14

This DVD is great. Nice camera angles. The only thing that I didn't like is that they interrupt some of Tony's greatest solo's with clips of the band talking. If you ask me, and who am I, they should have put those clips inbetween the songs...that way we could enjoy the whole freakin jam. Other then that...great DVD. Get it!

2 out of 5 stars What on Earth was going through their minds?!!!.......2006-12-29

1999 and here we were at last with the first offical Black Sabbath DVD. And tiwh the classic line-up. And with the band with top form. And with a great set list. BUt everything was ruined. Why?

For the first time in the history of DVDs containing live performances, ALL the songs are interrupted by an interview right in the middle! That's it! You heard me well! INtead of putting the interviews as a bonus feature, they inserted them inside the concert... Clever editors...

2 out of 5 stars Great Band- Bad DVD.......2006-11-24

Don't expect to enjoy a Black Sabbath concert. Almost every song is interrupted (in most cases at a critical point in the song) by interviews with band members. Why not put the interviews at the end or on a bonus DVD? When you're actually listening to the concert, the band is raging but the interviews (although somewhat interesting and funny) totally ruin the mood. On the positive, Ozzy sounds great, remembers the words, and is into the performances. Unfortunately he reminds me of an elderly person shuffling around looking like he's going to fall on his face at any moment. Borrow it, don't buy it.

3 out of 5 stars why would you?.......2006-11-04

Why would you cut into the middle of a song with an interview with the band(fairies wear boots for example)? I buy a music dvd to see the band perform the songs I like, not to see them b.s. about whatever(save that for the bonus dvd). But the band is great, even the songs that are interupted. I would have given this dvd a top rating, if whoever produced this had let sabbath play through all the songs without interruption. If you are a sabbath fan, you will still jam with this one.

4 out of 5 stars An interesting look at several Holy Grail candidates.......2007-03-07

When you buy a DVD like this for a buck, you can never be sure you're getting something worth watching, but In Search of the Holy Grail turned out to be a surprisingly good documentary. At 52 minutes, it's certainly not an in-depth examination of the Grail legend in all of its intricacies, but this production communicates a lot of good information and calls upon several formidable and erudite experts from different sides of the debate. After the obligatory laying out of the foundation (the nature of the Grail according to legend vs. its probable factual nature - if it ever even existed, a quick look at life in the Middle Ages, when the legend first arose, etc.), the documentary turns its attention to four (or five) existing "grails" laying claim to the mantle of the Holy Grail, examining each one in turn. It also briefly examines the claim by Michael Baigent and others that the "grail" actually refers to a secret bloodline of Christ (thankfully, it does this with no mention of Dan Brown's name).

Spain's Valencia Cathedral houses an agate vessel said to be the Holy Chalice, the only Grail contender formally blessed by a Pope (John Paul II). Its provenance goes all the way back to the end of the fourteenth century, but it was supposedly taken to Rome by St. Peter, then sent to Spain for safekeeping when the Roman persecution of Christians put it in danger. A more romantic possibility is the Glastonbury Grail, for Glastonbury is intimately associated with the legend of King Arthur. Supposedly, Joseph of Arimathea brought the cup with him to England and buried it at the spot from which the Chalice Well now springs. According to the documentary, local priests threw the chalice into the well for safekeeping after Henry VIII broke from the Vatican and ordered the destruction of all Catholic abbeys. In 1906, a local mystic had a vision of the Grail in the well and, when he dug beneath that well, found a glass bowl which is now known as the Glastonbury Grail.

In 1988, Andrew Sinclair discovered a 15th century scroll containing a "treasure map" which suggested to him that the Grail is buried beneath Rosslyn Chapel in Scotland, the supposed headquarters of the Knights Templar after the surviving Templars fled France. He managed to get permission to excavate the site, finding one of the hidden vaults but no supposed Grail (although some still believe the Grail is there somewhere). The Nanteos House in Scotland holds a mysterious wooden cup, discovered under the ruins of Strata Florida Abbey in the late 1800s, said to have healing powers. The story is that, during the Reformation, seven monks escaped the monastery at Glastonbury with the sacred cup, and it eventually ended up in Strata Florida Abbey. (Physical evidence suggests it is not possibly old enough to be the Holy Grail.) While the Nanteos Cup is comparatively plain, the Great Chalice of Antioch is anything but. Discovered in Turkey in 1910, this chalice is ornately decorated with what some say are perhaps the earliest depictions of Christ's disciples. Since it dates back to the 6th century, however, it could only be the Grail if the Grail was in fact a commissioned piece that had no association with Jesus personally.

The documentary puts forth no opinion on the true identity or whereabouts of the Holy Grail, although some of its experts declare their case for one candidate or the other. The only problem I have with the presentation is the fact that it does not come out and say that several, if not all, of these pieces have been effectively disproven to be the true Holy Grail. Still, it makes for quite an interesting program, especially for such a low-budget price.

5 out of 5 stars Five years from now?.......2007-01-11

The book well be sold long after the hub bub about it has died down. I got this DVD so I don't have to study and read apposing views. 5 years from now it might be harder to get a DVD with apposing views so buy now.

I have watched about 3 shows on tv about this subject and this one was the best of them all - well in my mind.

The last supper artifacts DVD I didn't like as much.
