If the notion of being pursued across the countryside by monstrous, ambulatory stalks of rhubarb strikes terror into your soul, then this British TV adaptation of sci-fi novelist John Wyndham's The Day of the Triffids will be right up your hedgerow. If not, well, perhaps its more campy elements will carry the day. As adapted (and significantly abridged) by Douglas Livingstone and directed by Ken Hannam, the story is serialized in six parts, each about 25 minutes long. In the first, we meet protagonist Bill Masen (John Duttine), who knows all about the rhubarb… um, the triffids… having spent some time working among the folks who harvest their valuable oil extracts. Seems these strange plant thingies, whose origin is most mysterious, can not only walk (albeit at a pace that makes The Lord of the Rings trilogy's Ents seem like Olympic sprinters) but kill, subduing victims with their whip-like stingers and then consuming the rotting flesh; indeed, one of the triffids almost nailed our hero, which is why he's hospitalized when we first see him. Next thing you know, some kind of toxic celestial event has lit up the skies and blinded everyone who dared look at it, leaving most of the population sightless and stumbling about the streets of London (and everywhere else); only those who missed the calamitous light show, including Bill and soon-to-be love interest Jo (Emma Relph), can still see, while the triffids, who multiply in frightening numbers, proceed to lay waste to everyone else. There are some interesting ideas developed along the way, including the inevitable breakdown of civilization as the survivors struggle to begin anew while dealing with the implacable triffids. But the execution of said ideas is lacking; shot on video, the show has a flat, rather cheesy look, along with low-rent special effects (the triffids are laughable), less than stellar acting, and dialogue straight out of a soap opera. In the end, the fact that this Day of the Triffids is considered better than the 1962 film adaptation with Howard Keel is probably its principal attraction. --Sam Graham

Description

The Triffids are coming! The Triffids are killing! A shower of meteorites produces a glow that blinds anyone that looks at it. As it was such a beautiful sight, most people were watching, and as a consequence, 99% of the population go blind. This chaos results in the escape of some Triffids: experimental plants that are capable of moving themselves around and attacking people.

2 out of 5 stars Good story, but movie needs some help.......2007-07-28

As much as I liked the book, and the whole idea of triffids, it could have been done a lot better. Also, this movie has some of the absolute worst movie music I have ever heard. I watched with the sound muted a good part of the time. Let's hope somebody remakes it soon.

2 out of 5 stars This version from Cheezy.... missing audio ?.......2007-06-06

Note: I really liked this movie as a kid ..and i still love it now...but
I bought the Day of the Triffids, the version put out by a company called cheezy or something....Hey the movie looks great compared to other version, but the last 20 minutes there is no audio, i dont know if its only my copy that has the problem, but i was really dissapointed. If anybody else had that audio problem, please leave me a comment.

3 out of 5 stars crude, but this is the stuff of memories.......2007-05-29

I saw this as a memento to childhood delight, as I vividly recall seeing it with my best pal when it came out. There are wonderful images in it, of the greasy, mysteriously menacing plants striking blind beauties while society falls apart around them.

Of course, if your standard is not to re-live a wonderful time as a child in a cinema of screaming and laughing children, this film will probably do very little for you. Viewed more cooly from my vantage as a middle-aged film buff, it is pretty weak as sci-fi. Little is explained - the meteors somehow cause both blindness and a bizarre transformation in the triffids - and after the chaos of a society falling apart, the plot takes weird twists. One group that the narrative follows forms a kind of family and inexplicably heads to southern europe, where after much danger they escape. The other actors are a troubled couple of scientists, who miraculously discover that salt water dissolves the triffids after much failed study, again inexplicably. And the effects! Very bad compared to what is available today.

Recommended for purposes of nostalgia only, unless you are a connoisseur of clunky monster flicks over lots of beer.

4 out of 5 stars The Horror Classic "Day Of The Triffids" film to dvd........2007-04-08

ok ive Just watched "day of the triffids" and it has been chopped into anamorphic widescreen, but sadly they left in some of the graininess of the film, which is sad in this age of THX and Dolby surround. but to see this classic remastered and even with the few graphical errors, this IS, and always will be, an aged classic. to me its aged well, some do not agree but I think there's some fun to be had here. but overall this movie is for the fans of the oldies and the people whom saw this movie on the "silver screen" (yes you know who you are) and its worth every cent to go on an adventure like this. *a meteor shower blinds most of the humans on earth, leaving the few survivors to fend off the horrific Triffids! (horrible plant monsters that eat people) before Humanity is destroyed* if you have not seen this film you might want to check it out.

*if you can overlook the age of the film, bad transition, and cheesy storyline, then this might amuse the whole family. there is no gore and violence consists of some shrill screams and a few gunshots plus the gurgle noise of the plants *triffids* other then that this is a mostly forgettable movie unless you are like me and just love the classics that started it all. still a low end B movie though.

5 out of 5 stars A great movie to watch .......2007-03-27

This is a movie that I enjoyed very much. I had seeing this movie when I was younger but was very hard to find until it came out on vhs and dvd.
I found the fact that it could happen to anyone who is suckered into watching some celestial show and wake up the next day with burned out eye retinas causing permanent blindness.

Not only is the person blind, but the whole world is blind except for the people who did not watch the meteorite shower. Plants, called Triffids become active and unroot themselves and go killing and eating people. Now that is cool. Planes, ships, trains crashing because their pilots or conductors has become blind. A very good movie to watch. Good story and performance.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars BBC adaptation that is faithful to the original novel..........2007-09-09

NOTE: As I own the 2/4 region version of this film, my review deals with the substance of the story (NO spoilers!). I have preordered a copy coming from Amazon and will update my review immediately after receiving that one.

This is a six part mini-series based on the book by John Wyndham, first broadcast in the UK in 1981 and subsequently shown on PBS (where I first saw it). The Day of the Triffids is quite the father to "28 Days Later", in that it is an end-of-the world-as-we-know-it tale, but it has a good deal less gore and offers up a romance between the leads John Duttine (as Bill Masen) and Emma Relph (as Josella Payton).

The plot centers on two main elements: the introduction of a complex, new form of plant life that provides a highly profitable type of oil and the appearance of a massive meteor shower that is eagerly viewed by most of the inhabitants of the world.

As this is a BBC television production, the sense of a play unfolding and the accents of some of the characters may not appeal to some American viewers. Yet, the dialogue is crisp and the emotional interplay very human in a situation where the world seems to have gone mad. The special effects are minimal but fairly convincing (remember this was made over 25 years ago).

This is one of my favourite science-fiction movies of all time. The actors do a very solid job of bringing the characters to life, there is a very real feeling of dread as the veiled nature of the triffids becomes apparent and the responses of various peoples to the crisis rings true throughout.

It should be noted that an earlier effort at adapting the book for film starred Howard Keel (many will have seen this courtesy late night movies). That version ended up quite a mishmash and strayed very far from the source material - I would assign it just two stars.

I highly recommend The Day of the Triifids done by the BBC.

1 out of 5 stars One star because it did give a 0 option!.......2007-06-06

I am doing research on lesbian films. And so far I have been completely let down with only a few exceptions, the best exception so far is Saving Face, I will explain.

It has been my experience watching "lesbian" films that in some way, shape, or form a man is involved before woman proclaims her lesbianism or after, as in April Showers. I do not know ANY lesbian who would sleep with a man. Even in the highly proclaimed lesbian film Go Fish a "lesbian" sleeps with a man. Its a disgrace and an insult to imagine that any lesbian would sleep with a man.

I have nothing against men, I have several male friends. But this seems like a male propaganda in order to change the face of lesbianism into "just waiting for the man arrive."

What's worse, is that a woman film maker would even consider making a lesbian film where the lesbian sleeps with a man.

These films are shameful and should never be in teh same category as lesbian films. They should be with the bisexual films.

1 out of 5 stars too has been.......2007-04-12

Unfortunatly the bad (actors) actresses make us forget the interest of the subject : the coming out and the fun of some situations.

3 out of 5 stars I've seen better..........2007-01-29

I rented this movie, and I'm glad I didn't spend too much on the rental. It was cute, and entertaining enough, but as someone who buys plenty of DVDs, I wouldn't have purchased this one. It had its moments, though, and I enjoyed watching it once, even though plenty of parts of it don't really make sense.

1 out of 5 stars What a wate of my time.......2006-12-16

Look, I'm used to movies like "Better than chocolate", "Listen", "Gia", Monster, series like "The L word", real good lesbian stuff. When I got this movie thinking it was a good lesbian drama, I was completly dissapointed. Boring, unrealistic, stupid... do not waste your time/money. The real lesbian of the movie ends up with a guy, and the main characters were so boring! oh god! I still regret I watched it. Hey, if you wanna see a lesbian movie that has never been properly discovered, buy "Listen", it's only a VHS version, but it's hot, great lesbian thriller... reminds me of Basic Instinct but better.

1 out of 5 stars April's wet blanket.......2006-11-30

I appreciate the effort. I really do. Especially from a woman filmmaker on a tight budget. I applaud the movie for that reason only. 1 star for effort!

But, honestly, aren't there any decent scripts and actors out there? Isn't there anyone willing to invest money in lesbian films? We are STARVED for anything half way decent, and will shell out some bucks on Amazon to get it. But I refuse to part with hard earned cash for something on par with the very bad "Bar Girls," which describes this movie to a T.

Unfortunately, this film gets one star from me because (a) it was completely unbelievable, (b) the pacing was terrible, (c) the acting was energetic, but not in the right places, and (d) I was bored.

A MUCH better low budget/made by women film is "Kissing Jessica Stein." Even "Go Fish" gets points for style (and 2 stars from me, although it DID have worse acting). Back to the drawing board! And don't ask for my money until you have something at "It's in the Water"-level or better.

5 out of 5 stars Heaven Shower's Us With Blessings.......2007-06-25

In one of the fastest growing areas of the world, the burgeoning metropolis Beijing (like many places in the world), many past facets of life are being replaced to make way for "modern" conveniences. In the movie Shower, from mainland China's Xian Film Studio directed by Yang Zhang (Spicy Love Soup), this dichotomy of the new and the old is symbolized by the shower and the bath. The shower is a fast convenience that takes water for granted while the bath and especially the bathhouse is a tranquil way of life. Master Liu (Zhu Xu also in King of Masks) is owner of such an establishment where you can bathe, get a massage, get treatments like cupping, get a manicure, play Xiangqi (Chinese Chess), or challenge local patrons to cricket fighting. It is analogous to a men's club (or Cheers) where regulars come to relax as well as socialize (and everybody knows your name as well as your problems). Liu lives with his mentally slow son Er Ming (wonderfully played by Jiang Wu) who helps out with the daily chores.

Shower starts off with an idea by bathhouse denizen He Zheng of an automated shower (reminds me of the automated restrooms in large cities like San Francisco or the suicide booths in Futurama) where you pay your money and get put through an automatic human wash that sprays soap, water and scrubs you to a healthy clean. It is a clever idea by a slacker whose entrepreneurial ideas tend to fizzle and who still needs to fix the neon sign for the bathhouse. It is entirely appropriate that he is telling this idea while relaxing in the caldarium.

The drama begins when Da Ming (Pu Cunxin), son of Liu, comes to visit from Shenzhen after an extended absence. He came after misinterpreting a postcard that Er Ming sent that seemed to show the death of his father. While Liu was happy to see him he then realized the only reason his son came to visit because he thought he was dead. Da Ming decides to stay for a few days though his faster pace existence is evident by the fact he only takes showers now and not baths. Things have changes so much between them at one point that Liu wishes his son had not even shown up (though at this point Da Ming had lost his younger brother while buying a ticket home).

The distant relationship between Liu and Da Ming is counterbalanced between the beautifully simple and close relationship between Er Ming and Liu. Liu takes care of him but allows Er Ming to help out with the business and even exercises with him. It is a touching kinship that seems realistic and not forced. Da Ming is awed by this bond. He has spent so much time away that he is an estranged "prodigal son."

The biggest strength of this film is it's characterization. There are many wonderful supporting roles in this film. There is the impotent Zhang and his shrewish wife. There are the bickering cricket trainers and fighters (including Mr. Wu who has possibly used illegal substances to beef up his cricket.) There is Miao Zhuang who loves to sing Eduardo Di Capua and Giovanni Capurro's O Sole Mio in the shower. And He Zheng the daydreamer who owes lots of money. I am quite impressed by how well all of their lives are interconnected throughout many of the subplots.

Small spoiler in this paragraph: I do no have much to complain about this film (other than the multitude of men's buttocks shown). It would seem that the impending doom of the district, including the bathhouse, to be replaced by a shopping mall would seem a contrite stereotypical plot device but for Beijing and the surrounding areas it is really happening. I did think one scene involving Er Ming and a hospital felt forced and tried to be too emotionally manipulative, but that was probably the only moment that I felt was mediocre..

The central theme to this movie is water. There is an emotional flashback scene where Liu talks about Er Ming's mother from the northern province and how much families had to sacrifice just to get enough water for the daughter to take a bath before her wedding day. Water is a purifying force. When Mr. Zhang had problems with impotence it was solved with a special potion and a bath. When Miao Zhuang could not sing in front of the neighborhood, water was used to cure this disorder. Water is also a destructive force. The only death took place in water. Er Ming used a water hose to disrupt a moving party. It is also a healing force: Liu and Da Ming made peace during a storm. In the film water is analogous to life. The wooden plaque at the end of the film sums up the movie with the aqueous statement: "Heaven Shower's Us With Blessings".

Shower is one of my favorite mainland Chinese films. It is bittersweet, poignant, funny yet emotional complex movie I have watched several times. There is no sugary-sweet ending so it feels more natural. What stays with me though is the memory of the characters and how they remind me of characters that frequent every archaic establishment. Personal note: I may be biased for this film in certain aspects because I used to manage an arcade that was eventually torn down to make way for a larger parking lot. The amount of diverse characters there, like in Shower, was immense.

DVD Notes: the only current R1 copy in existence is a Sony Pictures Classics (Columbia Tri-star) version. It is a nice looking copy (anamorphic) that has bare-bones extras featuring only talent files and trailers. I am not sure how good the subtitles are though. They have the habit of writing people's names as one word (Da Ming becomes Daming) which is very annoying. Here is another film that deserves a better release with more extras and possibly a commentary.

5 out of 5 stars Sweet, but honest........2007-04-10

Sweet and endearing without being overly sentimental. If this movie were made in Hollywood, the neighborhood would have doubtlessly been saved by the community pulling together for some kind of phenomenal fundraiser. This, instead, shows the family and community engaging in little kindnesses as the aging neighborhood breathes its last...and it is the people, rather than the buildings, that are redeemed in the end.

5 out of 5 stars Loved the Movie-Rented it, then Purchased It.......2007-01-10

This movie is about a father and two adult sons and how they related to each other. Most of the action takes place in a traditional bath house, where the men gathered for socializing. You see one of the sons having to make a tough decision about his and his brother's lives, and the emotional turmoil it causes. You feel as though you were there, because you get to know some of the regular customers and their individual quirks, and you also learn about this family that could have had a depressing life, but choose instead to be happy. I have already recommended this movie to many of my friends and family. I loved it.

5 out of 5 stars Great Movie.......2007-01-09

I loved this movie when I watched it. My grandparents loved this movie even more when they saw it, so much that they purchased a copy and brought it to China to show their relatives and reminisce the past.

4 out of 5 stars Family Ties.......2006-12-13

Shower is an interesting story whose director juxtaposes modern and ancient culture to give the audience a holistic view of today's China. A good number of today's youth are getting jobs in the fast-paced field of corporate business. They do not have time go to the bathhouse and spend hours soaking in the tub. What the older generation realizes is that going to a bathhouse is not just about taking a bath. Bathhouses are located in neighborhoods making them a place to go and visit with friends and neighbors. Someone who owns one of these places builds a connection with his or her clientele as they come back year after year.
Daming Liu does not take the time to understand what his fathers business is all about or why it makes him happy. He is embarrassed by him and decides to leave home in search of a more glamorous lifestyle. On the other hand, his brother Erming loves his father and is happy helping him take care of his business, he does not have much choice but anyone can see how happy he is and how simple everything in life seems for him. Sometimes those in life that do not have many worldly possessions or much money are some of the richest and happiest people in the world. Erming and his father are a perfect example of that. They are surrounded by lots of friends as well as each other to love and care for them. Anyone could find things to complain about in Mr. Liu's situation. Instead, he is the light in his son Erming's life. It is so wonderful to watch how gentle Mr. Liu is with Erming. Anyone could easily loose patience with a retarded person. Mr. Liu spends day after day with his son and manages to make life wonderful for him. He makes it seem easy to raise a retarded child. Mr. Liu is such a patient and understanding father.
When Daming comes home for a visit he sees how happy his father and brother are without him. Because Daming's father and brother are insecure about his feelings for them, they do not believe that he simply came home for a visit. For a while, things are rather tense. Daming is not seen as part of the family any more. He is not a part of the father son dynamic. He is an intruder. Daming spends time getting to know his father and brother all over again. Daming had been gone for so long that it appears he is home for the first time as an adult. Being an adult gives him a fresh more mature perspective on his relationship with his family. He begins to see things from his father's perspective and to realize how wrong he has been and how much he has missed.
Towards the end of the film, Daming begins to feel like a part of the family again. He finally gains his fathers acceptance, which he realizes he wanted all along. Erming and Mr. Liu get a fresh start with their son/brother Daming when he comes to visit. With the bathhouse being torn down there are many decisions that have to be made regarding Erming and Mr. Liu's future. It is interesting how this tragedy comes to life around the same time as Daming's visit. This is an important turning point for the Liu family. This problem has to be decided as a family. Daming is home so he is available to give his perspective. They have banned together as a family to make this decision. This perhaps makes them feel closer and gives Daming a chance to prove his worth as part of the family.
Just when the family has started to make peace, the father dies. Daming now has to deal with his brother. He does not have time to greave for a father he has not seen in years. He puts his grief aside to be a good big brother. It seems like Daming has inherited some of his father's compassion. Erming refuses to deal with his father's death. Perhaps he is mentally incapable of understanding his father's dead. Whatever the case he is having a hard time facing up to the fact that the one person he could count on to be there for him is gone. When you cannot care for yourself having a constant source of support is a very calming thing. It is comforting to know that his brother has some sense of family. In the end something good comes out of a major tragedy.

5 out of 5 stars a very pleasant movie.......2007-06-20

intense in a smooth way, mildly erotic. if you have heard it was "gay cinema" it is not. but even if that is what you were hoping for you should still watch this film. it is simply a great movie. and the french language makes it sultry throughout.

3 out of 5 stars Mispromoted.......2006-08-24

It's a sign of desperation on the part of the producers that this movie is being promoted as gay cinema. Yes, there is a brief (and darkly-filmed) threesome at the heart of the movie, and it's of the 2M+1F variety. But otherwise there isn't the faintest trace of "gay" in this movie, only a young man confused about his place in the world and driven to desperate acts, from losing more than 15 pounds on a crash diet to get into a lower judo weight class to sharing his girlfriend with a richer teammate to an act of violence that mars the last ten minutes.

With that said, there is a halfway-decent plot here; if you like the "disaffected teenage male" strain of French cinema you may enjoy this. But if you've come for either a gay coming-of-age movie or for the sort of titillation common to most movies promoted specifically to a gay audience, check out Grande Ecole or Latter Days instead.

4 out of 5 stars Ménage a Trois: Coming of Age Under the Microscope.......2006-08-12

'Douches froides' ('Cold Showers') is a film by Antony Cordier that has been marketed in a strange way: the projected audience was supposedly the gay audience, but aside from brief frontal nudity in an innocuous gym shower room there is nothing 'gay' about this movie. Instead COLD SHOWERS is an examination of class, sport, experimentation, and emotional borderlines that are at once fascinating and frustrating.

Mickael (Johan Libereau) is from a poor working class family - his father Gerard (Jean-Philippe Ecoffey) is a boozer taxi cab driver who lost his license as a result of a DUI, and his mother Annie (Florence Thomassin) is a cleaning woman in the high school gym: they live on the edge of poverty. Not a great student, Mickael excels in judo and his life is focused on his sport and on his girlfriend Vanessa (Salome Stevenin). One of Mickael's teammates Clement (Pierre Perrier) is from a wealthy family: his father Louis Steiner (Aurelien Recoing) is confined to a wheelchair and his mother Mathilde (Claire Nebout) is a woman of the world and society. Louis decides to sponsor the judo team, buys them outfits, and asks Mickael to work with Clement to perfect his technique and prepare the judo team for a French championship.

Mickael and Clement relate well and while Mickael is a winning player, Clement is smarter and understands the intrinsic rules of the game better. An incident occurs that forces Mickael to take the position of a wounded mate and in doing so he must lose 8 kilos to qualify for the championship team. The struggle to lose weight (his body is already perfect) places stress on both Mickael and his family and teammates. Mickael and Vanessa include Clement in their camaraderie, a situation which evolves into a ménage a trois as the three have sex in the after hours gym. Vanessa reacts as though this is the greatest physical feeling ever, Clement is smitten, and Mickael has troubling doubts. When the three decide to try it again in a hotel room Mickael is so conflicted that he does not join the other two, only listening to their cavorting in the bathtub feeling inferior to the smarter, wealthier Clement. But on the judo side, the team wins the championship and Mickael's delicate sense of self worth is restored for a moment. It is the manner in which the trio of young adolescents resolves their antics that closes the film.

Though the actors are superb and very beautiful to see and hear, the character development is fuzzy and we are left with little understanding or insight as to the each of the key players. The judo action moments are beautifully choreographed and the intimacy scenes are done with taste and fine lighting but with little passion conveyed. Though we want to identify with Mickael and his methods of confronting his coming of age, there just isn't enough character motivation to make that transference entirely successful. This film feels like two movies: a judo team's antics and a class-crossed ménage a trois. Beautiful to watch, but the script could have been more carefully constructed. Grady Harp, August 06

Three young couples venture out on a weekend boat trip. A vicious storm emerges, stranding them on an island inhabited only by a lighthouse keeper and his wife. 1 out of 5 stars HORRORS!.......2006-04-09

Oh my, what a frightening creature...a man dressed up in a monster suit with glowing green eyes. A group of teenagers who witness a meteor crash and end up on a lonely island with the lighthouse keeper and his wife. Isn't this original?
Yipes..this one is pretty bad. The actors are awful, the effects non-existent and the level of terror -- well, there is none. Someone must have given the writer/director some money for Christmas and he decided to make this totally crappy film. Don't waste your time, folks.

5 out of 5 stars the best movie since Day of the Triffids.......2005-11-22

I cannot believe that a screen writer could actually have the audacity and verve to pull off such an amazing script. The characters are not just paper thin no good talent beatniks that could'nt act to save there grandparents, parents, or there own lifes. The action is non stop unbelievable with an array of special effects that outrival even Star Wars III in their technological advancement. The plot is a masterpiece of understatement- 5 teens end up stranded on island with alien- wow!!
Oh, and don't even get me started on the creature effects. The monster itself was awesome! I mean, this is what I wanna see when I shell out $3.50 of my hard earned money!
Please, if you are reading this review, go now to your video store and say to the attendant'"I've got to have this movie!"
The meteorite scene alone will win you over.

1 out of 5 stars THE CRETIN THING FROM THE LACK LAGOON IN OPEN WATER.......2005-11-17

It starts off with the surprise ultra-realism of barely two films, like "Open Water," and that grand hope of an actual original amatuer effort.
Hope turns to despair for our soon-to-be stereotypes as well.
I consider that a broken promise.

I couldn't believe - literally - the monster was a man in a suit, a dying relation of the creature from the Black Lagoon.
And that it was The Telepathic Thing - with glowing green telepathetic eyes - taking over people.
Becoming a stereo-stereo-stereotype type.

So I don't mind exposing all of the no surprises.
And such an intelligent The Thing that could only make the exact same stereotype growls, and yawns, in the same voice as every other alien. Not a mutant bit different. Even in only existing to kill kill and eat more gore.

THIS FILM IS IN STEREO
==================
All the stereotypes (at least they could make them 5.1 types these days) are here.

1) The character crap (bickering and insults) filmakers always resort to when they can't think of any original characters.
2) The token **shole coward who turns boring hero.
3) The gratuitous - and grateful - lesbian encounter.
3) The unexpected one is taken over, and the misdirection to another (it fooled me. No it did).
4) The "Let's make a stand," is so weak a reason for staying, as if for creature comforts instead of creature killing. Why? Revenge...I guess?

I can take stereotypes if I expect it but going by the first 2 reviews of excellence I was expecting a special smorgasbord.
I now realise they were 11 or 12 years old. And I was too --- as naive.
I soon learnt, with the title "Predator Island" I was asking for --it.
I tell ya, it shoulda been a comedy. It had all the ingredients except laughs.

THE SPECIAL EFFECTS
=================

WHAT THE CRITICS SAID
===================
And the "reviews" on the back cover:

"AN ABSOLUTE SCREAM FEST!"
"RIP YOUR HEART OUT HORROR"
"UNRIVALLED TERROR"

Yes they are in quotes, but please, put the filmakers names after them.
Am I really STILL so gullible? YES.
Have I FINALLY learnt my lesson now? NO.
I realise there is always someone to say its the best thing since sliced movies (whether that be discs or film), but when they have to go even below Stent Rubberburger of radio XJKHGO its just - very stupidly clever; no one has heard of nobody!

SOUND DESIGN
===========
And please, if I see one more film where thunder happens simultaneously with lightning - none more than this flop in the ocean - I will personally throw their DVD into a lightning bolt to consummate their annoying vision that destroys even that reality. You know - suspension of disbelief. Dudards.

Oh but I forgot, that goes with the stereotypes.
They see, our ears and eyes must sense in stereo, or we cannot comprehend what lightning is!!

THE SPECIAL EFFECTS
=================
1) Oh ok I thought the meteor sometimes was ok, fairly real.
2) There just doesn't even seem to be a real lighthouse, just the worse, green&white video - or more like photo - effects like some 60's kids TV show

THE DEAD END at last
==========--------
The most exciting scene, as often is the case, are the production logo sequences before the film.
And, as if again in true stereo, the very last scene of the actual film - the one surprise, even though I remember one film at least used that. Kingdom of the Spiders.
We all know what the stereo end end normally is.

I'm sorry filmakers - I know (growl, yawn) you are going to read this.
I had to balance those first 2 reviews with the truth, and reason.

1 out of 5 stars So very very awful................2005-11-12

Oh my friends is this bad. I will watch just about any horror movie because I'm a die hard fan, but there a few now and then that make me want to rethink my obsession. Some college kids (how may times do we say that in these b-grades?) go sailing and end up with engine trouble at an island with a couple who live and operate the islands lighthouse. A meteor (absolutely cheap and fake looking) has crashed into the island and aliens who take over your minds are now running amok........

These aliens are just plain crap, not the amazing make-up and special effects we are used to in, say, any of the aliens, no, here we get actors in cheap, lame, cheesy costumes and they don't even fit right (watch a couple of the "attack" scenes and you'll see what I mean). Also, the acting is atrocious, but it doesn't really matter cuz you've never heard of any of them. The female actors were obviously chosen for one reason, eye candy. But even that is a let-down because we get no nudity what so ever, I know that sounds wrong, but I'm really grasping at straws here trying to figure out ways to improve this garbage!!!

People, skip this, skip this, oh please skip this, I'd rather watch any of the Aliens for the 30th time then ever give this movie a 2nd chance.

Story line is loose framework for instructional how-to. A bit too mechanical and raw. There are better choices. Preferred "one size fits all" or "my surrender" over this one.

    Description

Against the ardent wishes of his wife, eleven-year-old son, and sixteen-year-old daughter, ALBERT SNIDER (Judge Reinhold) is determined to have a festive family holiday. Albert doesn't seem to realize that his kids would rather stick needles in their eyes then spend time with their stuffy dad, and his wife is equally fed up by their dull life. When he receives an invitation from his long lost cousin Woodrow (Bryan Cranston), he decides to take his family out to the country for a down-home family holiday. However, Cousin Woodrow and his family turn out to be nuttier than a holiday fruitcake! What follows is a full course meal of nonstop laughs and holiday hilarity when the neurotic 'burbs clash with the hippy hicks from hell in National Lampoon's most outrageous family misadventure yet!

    1 out of 5 stars NO STARS.......2005-12-27

This movie was really, really, really bad. I can't believe it was even made. I thought National Lampoon would have written a better movie. Avoid this movie.

    1 out of 5 stars Lame!.......2005-09-03

I rented this movie (thankfully, a free rental) because I love Hallie Todd as an actress. She's the only saving grace in the movie. She's hysterical, and quite a departure from Jo McGuire. The rest of the movie, YIKES! It's definitely the lowest form of humour. It has a great premise--uptown yuppie family visiting a family of hippies who are extremely backward. However, it falls flat. Unless you're a "die hard" National Lampoon's fan, skip this movie (or rent it as a free rental). I rented it free, and still felt I paid too much (in gasoline!).

    1 out of 5 stars Ridiculous.......2005-04-01

UGH, i am sick of this whole "national lampoon" movie thing. The only truly funny laugh out loud, and hillarious National Lampoon movies are the VACATION SERIES, other than that all of them are just bogus and are so stupid they actually put you to sleep. I personally am i HUGE movie buff, and appriciate all sorts of movies, and am open and welcome to new ideas, but this is just ridiculous, how many movies are they going to make? and when are they going to stop? I found this to be more of a horror movie than a comedy. It tries so hard to be funny, but it fails miserably, even my cousin (who laughs at EVERYTHING) had to turn this off within 30 minutes, and it took many days for me to finnish the movie myself, i cant say exactly how long, but i had to watch it in incriments of i think 15 minutes each day, and from the second i started it, i was praying for the 15 minutes to be up! dont watch!!

    5 out of 5 stars A Laugh A Minute...Priceless!!!.......2005-02-06

Before you ask the question, the answer is "yes". I
do spend a good portion of my free time watching
movies...and the one I just finished watching was a
    side-splitter.

Any "National Lampoon" fans in the crowd? If you
    enjoyed NL's "Vacation", "Christmas Vacation",
"European Vacation" and "Vegas Vacation", you will
love "National Lampoon's Holiday Reunion". If you are
a Baby Boomer (like me) you will warm up to this film
quicker than a frog on a lily pad. Then again, frog
    butts are mighty cold.

The scripting, casting and editing is seamless...even
though I'm sure this was a cable TV product due to the
pauses (where commercials could be inserted).

My dear friend Darlene would love it. The lead
characters remind me so much of our long lost
friends...Mickey and Kitty. That's between Darlene
and I and I will not venture further.

Bottom line, this is a story of a big city family
transplanted into the backwoods for a "real" family
Thanksgiving. Coming out of the city shell and into
the country hell is handled so well I could not stop
laughing. What an enjoyable comedy. Mature audiences
(that means young adults, old adults and baby boomer
and bloomers) will cuddle up to a piece of life that
    is often forgotten...overlooked...taken advantage of.

Here's a piece of the script. I just had to write it
    down:

"I've been through every kind of weather and stormy
    seas;
Now I do just what I want when I please.
    I'm only getting better like a vintage wine;
And there's still a lot of livin' in this body of
    mine."

In the National Lampoon genre', this one gets a solid
    10. Wanna have a good laugh? Don't miss it...can you
    hear me Darlene?

    1 out of 5 stars THE WORST MOVIE EVER MADE ! ! ! !.......2005-01-23

Do not watch this one. A complete waste of time. Watch DUPLEX instead.
