Four Bronx buddies spend an evening cruising for girls and getting into trouble as they tool around the South Bronx. But as episodic and aimless as this film seems, it is built around strong performances by its four leads: Mario Joyner, Nestor Serrano, John Leguizamo and Doug E. Doug. But writer-director Joseph Vasquez gives each guy a distinctive personality and uses their various adventures to examine just how dead-end life seems to this quartet of black and Hispanic buddies--and which ones have a chance of breaking out. Leguizamo is particularly intriguing as a sensitive type who is looking for an actual relationship with a woman, rather than hit-and-run sex, while Joyner is solid as the voice of reason in the group. And Doug E. Doug has a jack-in-the-box comic energy that's undeniable. --Marshall Fine

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars funny isn't the word.......2007-01-04

This movie was hilarious and there wasn't any actor that didn't "step up to the plate" played his or her part everyone was great this is a "popcorn with butter" movie.

5 out of 5 stars A classic comedy of four friends out for the night........2006-10-12

The movie begins with Fernando, aka Vinny (Nestor Serrano) a Puerto Rican who lives off of women. 'Quantity, not quality' as he shamelessly puts it while passing himself off as an Italian. The next to enter is Willie (Doug E. Doug), a freeloading black guy who blames all his troubles on racism. Next we meet Johnny (John Leguizamo), a grocery clerk who can't decide if he should go to college or not. Finally, enters Tom (Mario Joyner), 'the actor' out of work actor, that is. Who gets invited for one reason, Tom has something none of the others have ... a car.

And, so, the foursome are off for a night in New York City. Misadventures happen almost from the start. They sneak into a house party and quickly get discovered and thrown out -- they then leave their neighborhood and head for the more exciting Manhattan. Where they wreck the car, get chased for ogling women, sneak into a disco, cause a riot in a pool hall, find out one of their girlfriends work at a peep show and get arrested at a subway station they visit, all for the sake of excitement. Hangin' With the Homeboys, though an outright hilarious comedy is about growing up and making choices. The odds against the four friends seem insurmountable, but they manage to take charge, have faith and go up against them. By the end of the film, it is perfectly clear which of the four will go on to make something of their lives and which will be left behind. As the four friends find out that the differences in their personalities leads them each down a separate path.

4 out of 5 stars A small film classic.......2006-02-25

For anyone who's ever had a Friday night out with the boys, this movie is for you.

Let's start with the cast. The director, Joseph B. Vasquez, certainly had an eye for talent. John Leguizamo, Doug E. Doug, Nestor Serrano, and Mario Joyner are the cast. Even if you don't know all their names, you know their faces. For many of them this was the beginning of their careers. Similar to the way that THE OUTSIDERS helped launch the careers of Tom Cruise, Patrick Swayze, etc. but on a lesser scale, of course.

The movie takes place on a Friday night with four very different friends hanging out in the Bronx. There's Johnny, who's not sure whether or not to go to college, Vinnie, a Puerto Rican who thinks he's Italian and lives off various women, Tom, an aspiring actor, and Willie, who gets by on welfare.

They couldn't be any more diffeent and it is thier differences and the way they approach similar situations that makes this movie so funny. There's really no "real" plot it's just the guys hanging out and in the process learning about each other and themselves.

It is funny with some mildly serious undertones. Not too many people I know have seen it but when i show it to them they do enjoy it. Sadly, the director died of AIDS shortly after the movie's release due to his heroin use. It looked like he could have been a major force in cinema but his mental health and drug use put an end to that.

5 out of 5 stars Great comedy.......2001-12-04

You will watch it many times.

4 out of 5 stars Hispanics & Blacks having fun & no crime--what a concept!!!.......2001-07-19

I have seen the movie numerous times and enjoy it more & more with each viewing. The 4 characters are funny, watch each others back and have a good time without having to hurt anybody. Their adventures crashing the party, getting arrested and dancing at the club are funny. I enjoyed the positive aspects of the film like whether to go to college or not, just be yourself instead of someone you're not and not to judge people on appearance alone. My favorite character was Vinny/Fernando and his mannerisms when dealing with others. The funniest bits were the ugly girlfriend contest and dropping the quarter at the x-rated booth. I highly recommend this film. It is nice to see a movie where the minorities are not treated like thieves and thugs. This movie is a gem.
