Adolescence is an emotionally stormy time for kids, but it's especially so for Shane (Josh Hutcherson), a teenager being raised by single firefighter father Connor (Bruce Greenwood). Add the recent death of Shane's fire-captain uncle (Connor's brother) in the line of duty and the pending closure of their neighborhood "Dogpatch" fire station, and both Shane's propensity for skipping school and brooding in his room and his father's obsession with work seem easily explainable. When a mutt called Dewey, really a very spoiled superstar dog named Rexxx who's been presumed dead after a parachuting stunt gone wrong, turns up in a burning building and is rescued by the Dogpatch crew, Connor puts Shane in charge of caring for the dog and finding its owner. Shane and Dewey clash immediately and Shane is extremely resentful toward both the dog and his father. However, Dewey's special talents (like skateboarding and trampoline jumping), combined with his good fire-fighting instincts, soon win the admiration and affection of Shane and the entire Dogpatch crew. A series of mysterious fires causes Shane and Connor to begin to really communicate and reconnect, but those fires also threaten their very lives. At the same time, Dewey's former owner discovers Dewey's true identity and demands the return of his superstar companion. An engaging dog story that explores the difficulties of growing up and dealing with personal tragedy, Firehouse Dog is a fun family film that's rated PG due to some mildly crude humor (think potty jokes), language, and action peril. --Tami Horiuchi

Customer Reviews:
Pretty good movie-I would not take real young children to it though...........2007-09-12
Director: Todd Holland.
Starring: Josh Hutcherson, Bruce Greenwood, Steven Culp, Bill Nunn.
Old-fashioned family film - which is a good and a bad thing. Good in that it's a wholesome, good-natured kids movie; bad in that the kids are used to something much more these days.
When Rex becomes the firehouse mascot, it keeps the fire fighters' morale high as their station is threatened with closure. Okay, so it might rely on canine bodily function gags to get most of the laughs (Rex snores, farts, burps and poos in the stew), but Firehouse Dog is not entirely a comedy. There's a sizable subplot that deals with mysterious arson.
Hot Mutt.......2007-09-02
This is a good old fashioned family movie about a boy and a dog, and of course, like all shaggy dog tales, the mutt is the star. Celebrity dog Rexxx (note the x's) chucks in his glamorous poodle-filled life to become a firehouse dog, the only fringe benefits being that he can chase the fire-engine and investigate a lot of hydrants.
He adopts a young boy named Shane, who is rather unwilling at first, but after some aerial acrobatics, a few search and rescues and a lot of canine flatulence, Shane finally gets around to appreciating Rexxx, even though he mistakenly believes his name to be Dewey. "Dewey" soon rises to the rank of mascot, and is duly appreciated by the humans, especially the inhabitants of the Dogpatch Fire Station, who although friendly enough, don't seem to be the sharpest tools in the shed.
There are two other stories filling out the movie, one being the relationship between Shane and his firefighter father, and the other being the mystery of the curiously contagious conflagrations in the Dogpatch area.
Corny and cheesy in places, but never whiny, this is a movie you can watch with small kids (your teenagers may be otherwise occupied), but as you will see, the star of this movie is undoubtedly the hot mutt.

Firehouse Dog (The Irish Terrier "Dare Devil").......2007-09-02
This is a great family movie about an irish terrier. Also, I own an irish terrier, and they are beautiful dogs, but need a lot of training initially, as they have a mind of their own. PLEASE do not buy one of these dogs because they are cute, unless you are willing to give it a LIFETIME committment.
Fire;house Dog.......2007-09-01
One of the best Family films I have seen. You don't see many fit to watch anymore, but this one is tops
Firehouse Dog.......2007-08-26
It's a very good movie. A movie the family can watch together. I enjoyed it just as much as my grandkids. A Dad, a Son, a dog with a little humor and a little drama. What more do you need.

When egghead Scotty Smalls moves to town just before the summer vacation of 1962, his first priority is to make friends. He heads to the nearby sandlot only to humiliate himself before the local kids, but star player Benny "The Jet" Rodriguez befriends the awkward boy, teaches him the basics of baseball, and welcomes him to the team. It's a summer filled with camaraderie and fun until Smalls hits his first home run. Problem is, Smalls's home run sends his stepfather's "Babe Ruth" autographed baseball into a neighboring yard that's patrolled by a snarling, slobbering monster called "The Beast." Creativity reigns and hilarity ensues when the boys risk everything to retrieve the ball. A final heroic encounter with "The Beast" and his owner yields some very surprising results. Action, humor, and friendship permeate this 101-minute film appropriate for ages 5 and older. Rated PG due to name-calling and some pubescent behavior. --Tami Horiuchi
Description
It's the early 1960s and fifth-grader Scotty Smalls (Tom Guiry) has just moved into town with his folks (Karen Allen and Denis Leary). Kids call him a dorkhe can't even throw a baseball! But that changes when the leader of the neighborhood gang recruits him to play on the nearby sandlot field. It's the beginning of a magical summer of baseball, wild adventures, first kisses, and fearsome confrontations with the dreaded Beast and its owner (James Earl Jones) who live behind the left field fence. Soon nine boys have become best friends, Scotty is part of a team, and their leader has become a local legend in this hilarious and warmhearted comedy.

GREAT MOVIE.......2007-09-11
I BOUGHT THIS DVD FOR MY 11 YEAR OLD GRANDSON. I JUST RETIRED FROM BEING A DAY CARE PROVIDER FOR 34 YEARS & THIS MOVIE WAS AN ALL TIME FAVORITE, NOT JUST FOR MY BOYS, BUT MY GIRLS AS WELL. AS AN ADULT IT'S ONE OF MY FAVORITES ALSO. A VERY WHOLESOME, NICE CLEAN MOVIE ABOUT FRIENDS.
The ORIGINAL and ONLY the original.......2007-09-02
I have to go along with the others here. This is a GREAT movie. It never did receive the attention that it deserved. I also agree that this is a much better movie than Rookie of the Year (not that ROTY was a bad movie, but The Sandlot is a better movie).
Both of my sons enjoyed this (and they are 12 years apart) as well as I did - which is saying something!
James Earl Jones is - as usual - fantastic. Dennis Leary lays off the manic act and adds that certain "something" to the movie. The kids who played the characters were well chosen. Whoever picked the cast did an outstanding job.
On a night when you want to relax with your son (or daughter even), or you are watching the grand kids, or if you find you have the evening to yourself - and there isn't anything worth watching (and there never is), put this movie in and relax.
You will find that this is one of those movies that you can watch over and over again without getting tired of it.
Time-tested, terrific flick!.......2007-07-24
I'm 26 years old and still LOVE this movie from when I was much younger. I owned it first on VHS for many years, now DVD, and still watch it on an occasional afternoon when you just want to watch a cute movie. The characters are adorable and hilarious and this movie never goes out of style. Its so great!
Great Service.......2007-07-19
I received my product in perfect condition with great
and timely service. Thank you.
You're killing me, Smalls!.......2007-07-12
"The Sandlot" is an excellent movie based on such topics as friendship, baseball in the old lot, and a crush on that beauty you always see. But what about it makes it so irresistable?
For one thing, it's pure fun. Scotty Smalls is new to the neighborhood, and as his stepfather leaves for a week on a business trip, Scotty loses his stepfather's priceless Babe Ruth-signed baseball, thinking it was just another baseball. Seeing him and all his new-found friends go completely over the top to retrieve the ball from the neighbor's giant beast of a dog is sure to prove a great time.
Not to give too much away, but there's another awesome scene at the city pool where Squints fakes drowning just to make out with his crush, Wendy the lifeguard! You must see the look on his face right before he does so!
At the end of the movie, when the plot is resolved and all is well, the movie catches up with modern times (as it is set in 1962). The older Scotty Smalls is the narrator and tells how each of his friends resulted in their careers and such. It may have been done before, but for me, it's a technique that never, ever gets old!
Aside the main plot, there are quite a few other situations the characters get themselves into, including the summer carnival and a sleepover in the treehouse (a scene which sports the immortal, "You're killing me, Smalls!" line, and a so-ridiculous-it's-awesome campfire tale of The Beast). In addition, there's a baseball game against a Little League team which returns to the baseball overview of the movie.
"The Sandlot", as previously mentioned, is an absolute joyride full of laughs, great, powerful, dramatic moments (especially in Benny's dream) and is a very nostalgic movie that will leave you feeling great, as a great movie should. A summer viewing essential, this is a definite five-star movie!

This very welcome box set turns up the heat on one of detective films' cold cases. Created by Brett Halliday, Michael Shayne appeared in 31 books between the 1940s and '70s. He is not as popularly known as other screen shamuses, but he's good company. As portrayed by Lloyd Nolan (best known as curmudgeonly Dr. Chegley on the groundbreaking sitcom Julia), Shayne is not as hard-boiled as Sam Spade or as sage as Charlie Chan. But, as one shady character observes to someone whom Shayne has just pasted, "You know better than to mix with Shayne." He's a working-class mug ("His office is in his hat, his home is in his car," he remarks), usually "down on his luck" and short on cash. As Michael Shayne, Private Detective (1940) opens, the furniture from his office is being repossessed. Still, Shayne has ethics enough to turn down $5,000 for a suspicious-sounding case. ("$5,000 will buy a lot of ethics," he's told). He's got some odd habits, from twirling his keychain to singing the odd Irish ditty. In each film, Shayne manages to get himself into some "screwy scrapes." In Private Detective, a "gag" backfires when an attempt to scare a gambling heiress straight results in a murder with Shayne's gun at the scene of the crime. In The Man Who Wouldn't Die (1942), Shayne pretends to be a wealthy woman's husband to get the lowdown on a body that won't stay buried. In Sleepers West (1941), he's on the right track when he accompanies a murder witness by train to San Francisco. Blue, White and Perfect (1942) is a real gem that finds Shayne embroiled in wartime espionage, smuggled diamonds and dodging his jealous, matrimonial-minded girlfriend.
These lively B-films each clock in at less than 80 minutes. What they lack in budget they more than make up for in shadow-drenched, dark, and stormy atmosphere, Shayne's moxie and inestimable support from some great character actors, such as Clarence Kolb (the crooked mayor in His Girl Friday) and Douglass Dumbrille (the nasty racetrack owner in A Day at the Races), who appear in Private Detective. For a collection of obscure films, this box set has all the trimmings, with three original featurettes that provide efficient primers on Halliday, Shayne, and Robert McGinnis, the artist who created luscious and lurid covers for the Shayne paperbacks. There is also an interactive trivia guide that makes the six-degrees connections between cast members and the film-noir world. This is volume 1, to which we can only say, "Come back, Shayne." --Donald Liebenson

LLoyd Nolan as Michael Shayne.......2007-07-07
The perfect fit of role and star, action a-plenty, twists, turns, and surprises, snappy dialogue, excellent cast support, upper level grade B production values, realistic settings, and transfer print quality as good as or better than you may have expected. What's not to like??
I haven't seen any of the Hugh Beaumont/Michael Shayne movies but I can't wait to watch the remaining three in the Lloyd Nolan series.
If you are fan of this era, a fan of mystery/detective movies with a side serving of good humor and a fan of this star who is perfect for this role, then you really don't want to miss this set.
Review of Michael Shayne Vol 1.......2007-06-28
I think these movies made in the 1940's were fun to watch. I particularly enjoyed LLoyd Nolan playing the lead role. I also enjoyed seeing old glamorous movie stars like Lynn Bari and Mary Beth Hughes in action again.
Classic B-Movies.......2007-06-12
I am a fan of Lloyd Nolan. He has always shined in B-movies. And his signature role as Michael Shayne is no different. His wit and timing are nothing short of outstanding. I hope that another boxed set of these films are released soon.
I would even like to see the one's with Hugh Beaumont. It would be nice to see Beaumont play a character besides Ward Cleaver on Leave It To Beaver. But, Lloyd Nolan is still the best to play this character.
Michael Shayne.......2007-06-08
The Michael Shayne mysteries are not only clever, but very funny. Lloyd
Nolan is great and the best Michael Shayne there ever was. Can't wait
till Volume 2 comes out.
action thriller.......2007-05-16
this dvd box set of michael shayne is very good and well worth buying for any film buff who likes lloyd Nolan. he plays the part very good and is comical also. the rest of the cast also are well worth watching, I do hope 20th centry Fox turn out more of Mike Shayne in the near future, I have been waiting for this series to come on dvd and now they are out Im more than pleased I purchased them. I realy do say this that Mike shayne is excellent and well worth the price of this set. and Lloyd Nolan takes the part well and I highly recommend it. well worth buying if you Like Nolan

The director/producer team that created Trainspotting turn their dynamic cinematic imaginations to the classic science fiction scenario of the last people on Earth. Jim (Cillian Murphy) wakes up from a coma to find London deserted--until he runs into a mob of crazed plague victims. He gradually finds other still-human survivors (including Naomie Harris), with whom he heads off across the abandoned countryside to find the source of a radio broadcast that promises salvation. 28 Days Later is basically an updated version of The Omega Man and other post-apocalyptic visions; but while the movie may lack originality, it makes up for it in vivid details and creepy paranoid atmosphere. 28 Days Later's portrait of how people behave in extreme circumstances--written by novelist Alex Garland (The Beach)--will haunt you afterward. Also featuring Brendan Gleeson (The General, Gangs of New York) and Christopher Eccleston (Shallow Grave, The Others). --Bret Fetzer
Description
Hailed as the most frightening film since The Exorcist, acclaimed Director Danny Boyle's visionary take on zombie horror "isn't just scary
it's absolutely terrifying" (Access Hollywood).
An infirmary patient awakens from a coma to an empty room
in a vacant hospital
in a deserted city. A powerful virus, which locks victims into a permanent state of murderous rage, has transformed the world around him into a seemingly desolate wasteland. Now a handful of survivors must fight to stay alive, unaware that the worst is yet to come
Customer Reviews:
28 "zombies" later.......2007-09-07
Ok, first and foremost..."28 days later" is not a zombie movie, no matter how it was marketed, or reviewed or talked about. The bad element of 28 days are people infected with a viral toxin (rage), that causes them to succumb to extreme violent acts. They are not dead, or undead. The do not devour their victims. They are not rotting...etc.
While 28 days shares familiar territory with Romero's classic Living Dead movies and an introduction to the lead character ripped from Day of the Triffids, the zombie genre ends there.
What "28 days later" is, however, is a very good low budget suspense flick with a great opener, a good middle section and an ok end section, which despite being entertaining kind of loses its way. It starts of well, with the actions that release "rage" virus and its scenes of a deserted London with unknown unseen danger and drips with atmosphere. People from Britain (or anyone whose spent some time in the city) could easily imagine themselves in Jim's dilemma, played admirably by Cork's Cillian Murphy.
Going into too much detail will spoil the suspense for those who haven't seen the film, but needless to say Jim eventually meets and runs away from the "infected", right into other survivors (including another Irishman Brendan Gleeson) who have been managing to hide out and stay "normal" in the face of overwhelming odds. Together this group decide to hook up with a military outfit that has set up the "answer to infection" in Manchester.
"28 Days Later" has enough to hold the viewer for its duration, in fact it rewards several viewings (I seen it three times now). But the budget constraints do show at times and the story does seem to run a little out of steam. It's very apparent that director Danny Boyle wasn't sure how to end the film and one is left a little let down at the films conclusion. This feeling may disappear however, now that "28 weeks later" is out and the second installment of the drama lets us into other areas of life in infected Britain, although I have yet to see that particular episode.
All in all, "28 Days Later" is an effective and entertaining film, with some fine scenes...but it ain't "Day of the Dead", but then again, nothing is.
Stop calling it a zombie movie.......2007-09-06
OK, 28 days later is an OK virus movie. A monkey that's been experimented on and infected with the "Rage" virus bites an activist who in turn is infected and attacks her mates. Explodes and you have a post-apocalyptic story with some great shots of abandoned streets and markets and some good chase scenes taboot. Add some great film treatments and good camera work and it's an edgy flick with some nice emotional touches.
BUT! It completely fails to be a Zombie movie.
Aside from breaking all conventions in Zombie movies, there aren't any walking dead. Between 28 days later and 28 weeks later, we find out that the infected, although usually killed through conventional zombie means (remove the head or destroy the brain) can also drown, bleed to death, asphyxiate, die from being gassed, starve, and be generally mauled. All their primary bodily functions are still going and that's what keeps them alive. Zombies (as originally portrayed in Night of the Living Dead) die and then start causing trouble.
If you don't look at it as a Zombie movie, it's an OK flick. If you're expecting a Zombie movie (and you know what a Zombie movie IS), you'll be disappointed.
ONE OF THE GREAT ZOMBIE MOVIES!!.......2007-09-01
a city ravished by disease, millions of zombies, only a few survivors, and you turn with just one drop of blood...crazy. loved this movie, i thought it was very well done. all the chaos, a world of the dead, where's saftey, how do you get out? i love zombies, i think they're the freakiest. they're people and they're dead, and all they want is to eat people. pretty damn scary. the whole movie was very good, i really liked it. i didn't get scared, but the film in general was wicked good. two thumbs up no doubt.
Charming, Poignant, and Inspiring.......2007-08-03
Having long been a fan of Sandra Bullock's, I expected 28 Days Later to be another one of her light-hearted, action-packed comedies (or are they comedy-packed action flicks?). I was in for a real surprise, however, as we are taken through the story of Gwen Cummings, played by Bullock, who is sent to a drug and alcohol rehabilitation center. At first she resists getting involved in the program, and refuses to admit that she has a problem, but as she gets to know her fellow patients and as she gets the chance to look deeper inside herself, she learns to accept that she does in fact have a problem, and only then is she able to have true hope for the future. She then wakes up 28 days later in the abandoned hospital only to learn that the world has changed drastically while she was in her unconscious stupor, and most people have been infected by a horrible and extremely contagious virus that turns even the kindest person into a hate-filled zombie filled with uninhibited violence. And she must face the question: who is the real enemy here? The blood-vomiting zombie-like infected who would love nothing more than to bite her throat out...or is the real enemy HERSELF?
Entertaining movie.......2007-08-02
Although the plot is not original this was a well made film. Good acting, good script, good directing and excellent camera work. Well worth seeing.

Product Description
This charming, Academy Award® winner (1979, Best Screenplay) cycles high on comedy as four friends come to terms with life after high school. When top-notch cyclist Dave (Dennis Christopher) learns that the world's bicycling champions are always Italian, he attempts to turn himself into an Italian, driving his parents (Barbara Barrie, Paul Dooley) crazy. But everything changes after he meets the Italian racing team - an encounter that ultimately leads him and his friends (Dennis Quaid, Daniel Stern, Jackie Earle Haley) to challenge the local college boys in the town's annual bike race.

Peter Yates's flag-waving film stands with To Kill a Mockingbird and American Graffiti as one of the best films about small-town Americana. Steve Tesich won an Oscar for his semi-biographical screenplay about four 19-year-olds who don't know what to do after high school. Dave Stohler (Dennis Christopher) and his three friends--ex-football star Mike (Dennis Quaid), wily comedian Cyril (Daniel Stern), and tough kid Moocher (Jackie Earle Haley)--are doomed to live in the college town of Bloomington, Indiana, where the local kids (nicknamed "Cutters"--a derogatory reference to quarry workers and their blue-collar families) are looked down on by the uppity students of nearby Indiana University.
Stohler escapes into a world of Italian bicycling, picking up the lingo, the accent, and a good share of the talent of his heroes. He is also the scourge of his father's life. The used-car salesman (Paul Dooley) doesn't understand his son's affection for bicycling or, for that matter, his pride in being a "Cutter."
Breaking Away rehabilitates the word heartwarming as Tesich's uncommonly intelligent script gives us well-rounded characters and a potent sense of place. The grandstanding finale--the real life "Little 500" bike race--gives the film a perfect, crowd-pleasing end. However, the film never sacrifices the development of characters for the action. Dooley is especially effective in one of those once-in-a-lifetime roles. The lifelong character actor's place in film history is established with this indispensable performance. --Doug Thomas
Customer Reviews:
Growing up on two wheels.......2007-08-12
I bought this movie after my purchase of a Walz cycling cap caused my wife to say, "You really need to see breaking away."
Ostensibly a cycling film, the story is centered on four friends who've made a pledge to waste their lives together after high school. The lure of the real world is too strong, though, and they must choose between rising to the various challenges they face or falling back into a life of obscurity and regret. It's all about the journey for these four young men.
But don't worry, cyclists: In addition to all the heavy stuff in the preceding paragraph, Breaking Away also features lots of fun on two wheels, plus an edge-of-your-seat bicycle race or two. All in all, a fantastic movie.
It is o.k........2007-08-05
This is an o.k. movie for a Sunday afternoon while it is raining. It is not a thriller or a super cyclist film in my opinion. It is somewhat entertaining, but I do not get the hype about it.
Breaking Away.......2007-07-03
Peter Yates's heartfelt, life-affirming movie will prove a winner for older kids and adults. Christopher is appealingly quirky in the central role and the film showcases the budding talents of future stars Quaid and Stern as two of Dave's buddies. Paul Dooley is outstanding as Dave's bewildered father, a solid Middle American you might actually buy a used car from. Don't miss this one.
IU nostalgia.......2007-05-13
I attended IU and I very much enjoy watching this movie again and again. It was a well written screenplay and adapted well to a movie version.
Buon giorno, Papa! .......2007-04-23
I just watched this movie for the first time in many years, and was just as captivated by it now as I was when I first saw it shortly after its release in theaters. Those who have grown up in small town America will find elements in the film that will take them back in time! I watched the film with my 12 year old, and both of us connected with the story, the characters, and the humor in it. This is indeed a real charmer of a film. I gotta have the DVD for my collection!

ALWAYS ENTERTAINING - NO MATTER HOW MANY TIMES SEEN.......2007-09-12
I have always enjoyed futuristic Sci-Fi - Do not really remember if it appeared in comic form.
Have yet to look at disc 2 -- have thoroughly enjoyed the actors concept of their characters - it is very hard to describe the feelings invocked upon seeing that ugly old Alien Queen - the nasty Company that wanted the Alien alive - no matter who has to die in the meantime.
Oh Yeah! those guys were in for the fight of their lives. And the danger even came from one of their own. A Company man. And a synthetic person.
Has become a classic and well worth adding to your collection - for pure entertainment. This is one to get without believing anyone's comments, good or bad. It is a matter of taste.
Great characters - great action - Nasty determined enemy - dark and dangerous - great cat.
HIGHLY RECOMMENDED -- Not good for anyone prone to nightmares.
Astonishingly good!.......2007-09-04
Somehow, despite my intense interest in movies, and despite having seen the other three 1/2 films in this series, I had never, until today, seen the first movie.
It is good.
Watching this film I was really taken aback by how well it's aged. You know how sometimes you can watch a movie, and it doesn't matter when it takes place, you can still peg roughly when it was made? that's not the case here. This is a movie that's only slightly younger than I am, and yet it looks and feels as fresh as something that could've been made in the last few years by die-hards who have no interest in CGI.
The only thing that to me seemed at all out of place was the smoking. Otherwise, it looked like something recent, rather than something from 1979. It's certainly aged far better than Blade Runner (Five-Disc Ultimate Collector's Edition) or even the first Star Wars movie.
I'm not sure what to attribute this to. Clearly the excellent performances, exceptional writing and incredible directing are a part of it. The sets seem very modern without slipping over into "ultra-modern" and that helps.
Also in watching this I became ever more depressed by what the franchise has become. This was a thoughtful, intelligent horror movie. Aliens (Two-Disc Collector's Edition) was a thoughtful, intelligent action movie. Alien 3 (Two-Disc Collector's Edition) and "Alien: Resurection" were... well, movies. The less said about AVP - Alien Vs. Predator (Widescreen Edition) the better.
This first film, however, was as flawless of a science fiction film as any you'll ever see. Heck, it even makes me want to go back and watch "Blade Runner" again, which I did not care for when I saw it the first time.
Roger Ebert has included this movie in his collection of "Great Movies" essays. He puts it into the same areas of greatness as films like Citizen Kane, Rashomon - Criterion Collection and All About Eve, a judgement I entirely agree with.
In short, don't do what I did. Don't watch the other films in the series and miss out on this one. If you haven't watched it, do so. If you have, then go back and see it again. It's worth your time.
One of the Best.......2007-08-30
Alien is a beautiful film and is the greatest sci-fi/horror film ever. All of the sets used are magnificent, from the interior and exterior of the Nostromo to the very organic alien setting. The different stages of the alien are done perfectly and are surprisingly realistic and very believable. The creature itself is extremely original and hasn't aged with time.
The film works kind of slow (in a good way) and manages to build a lot tension. They really gave it a feeling of emptiness that complements the space element. All of the actors are perfect and to this day it has one of the most shocking scenes in movie history.
This is one of my favorite movies and is a must own for fans of all genres.
Great Sci-Fi.......2007-08-26
All the gadgets on the ship, landing the ship I thought was the best part of the movie.
Corey Cotta, Author of All of Yesterdays Tomorrows.
A CLASSIC THAT LOOKS BETTER THAN EVER!.......2007-07-29
I saw this film at the theater when first released and I have seen it numerous times on TV, but this was the first time I watched the 2 disc special edition(actually the 9 disc box set)in my home theater and I must say I was very impressed! The Transfer is exceptional and the movie has never looked better. There are a few good scares in this well made Sci- Fi story. This is really a remake of "It The Terror From Beyond Space" The Box set is incredible and a worthy purchase. If you are not a fan of the entire series then buy the two disc set of the first two.

Product Description
Hard-drinking, burnt-out ex-CIA operative John Creasy (Washington) has given up on life--until his friend Rayburn (Oscar winner Christopher Walken) gets him a job as a bodyguard to nine-year-old Pita Ramos (Dakota Fanning). Bit by bit, Creasy begins to reclaim his soul, but when Pita is kidnapped, Creasy unleashes a firestorm of apocalyptic vengeance against everyone responsible.

Style trumps substance in Man on Fire, a slick, brooding reunion of Crimson Tide star Denzel Washington and director Tony Scott. The ominous, crime-ridden setting is Mexico City, where a dour, alcoholic warrior with a mysterious Black Ops past (Washington) seeks redemption as the devoted bodyguard of a lovable 9-year-old girl (the precociously gifted Dakota Fanning), then responds with predictable fury when she is kidnapped. Prolific screenwriter Brian Helgeland (Mystic River, L.A. Confidential) sets a solid emotional foundation for Washington's tormented character, and Scott's stylistic excess compensates for a distended plot that's both repellently violent and viscerally absorbing. Among Scott's more distracting techniques is the use of free-roaming, comic-bookish subtitles... even when they're unnecessary! Adapted from a novel by A.J. Quinnell and previously filmed as a 1987 vehicle for Scott Glenn, Man on Fire is roughly on par with Scott's similar 1990 film Revenge, efficiently satisfying Washington's incendiary bloodlust under a heavy blanket of humid, doom-laden atmosphere. --Jeff Shannon

South of the Border.......2007-09-02
This was a totally believable movie. Denzel Washington's character delivers violence of action while drinking himself to death.
Corey Cotta, Author of All of Yesterdays Tomorrows
Man On Fire.......2007-08-06
The butchered version you'll see on TV (even cable channels) leaves out information essential to the story. This is the only version to have.
"Im a professional," thats what everyone keeps telling me, .......2007-07-14
Man on Fire is one of Denzels greatest performances. He plays a character John Creasy with not much to live for until he gains a bodyguard job for a young girl who eventually is kidnapped. Once kidnapped you get to see John on a war path to take down anyone involved with the tragic event. The story is excellent and is complimented by a great cast of actors.
This definately recieves my seal of approval for a solid viewing experience.
Not great, but not bad.......2007-06-20
To my surprise, Tony Scott's remake of Man On Fire isn't the war crime I was expecting by a long shot. Horribly over-directed in places, true, but nowhere near as irritating as Domino, which is the closest ADDS filmmaking has come to projectile vomiting at the audience to date. It helps that Scott has a decent script and a good cast to keep his worst excesses in check, and it has to be said that some of the stylistic touches (such as the very active subtitling) are really pretty good. He's better at framing the surrounding scenes than some of the big moments, which are fairly tension and adrenaline-free for all their imagination, but he's prepared to get his hands far dirtier than you'd expect from a mainstream studio picture, and he even manages a couple of moments of emotional resonance as well. It's certainly much better than the dire original, which only had a good John Scott score (part of which turned up in Die Hard) going for it (aside from the film's change of location from Italy to Mexico, the song has changed from Someone to Watch Over Me - well, Ridley beat him to that one - to Linda Ronstadt's infinitely less relevant cover of Blue Bayou). Good to see Christopher Walken in a good guy role again, too.
Top notch film starring Denzel Washington.......2007-06-19
Man on Fire is one of the best crime drama films I have had the pleasure of viewing. Set in the heart of Mexico, the film tells a fantastic story that is backed up by great direction and cinematic appeal. With that said, you throw in top notch actors like Denzel Washington and Christopher Walken and it does more than make the grade.
Man on Fire centers on John Creasy, a burned out loner type whose only resolve in the present day is a bottle of liquor. Creasy meets up with an old friend (played by Walken) who turns him towards work as a bodyguard for a family's daughter in Mexico, a place where multiple ransom based kidnappings occur on a regular basis. Given his extensive background of military accomplishments which includes counter terrorism and Special Forces (to name a few) he is hired almost immediately, although he himself is reluctant about the new role.
The character development of Creasy is excellent, but I would have to attribute that as much to the screen presence of Denzel as I would anything else. Overall the direction of this movie is superb, using captions when necessary and applying some different camera uses in regards to angles and perception to allow different moods to be invoked for a specific scene. Dakota Fanning plays as the daughter that he is supposed to protect, and I feel was a good choice for the role. As the movie moves on, we learn little about Creasy's past but get to explore him tearing down some walls in the present, as both a "vigilante with a vengeance" persona as well as seeing the human compassion side of him in his adoration of the little girl he is paid to protect. The film has it all when it comes to twists and turns as well as themes of corruption, family, and revenge. As Creasy says it best in the movie; "revenge is a dish best served cold". The films emotional conclusion is still a stoic ending when you take into account all the harrowing events and actions that led up to it. I feel what makes this film so much better than many of its kind is the ability to evoke a great seriousness within the main character while putting him in a dire situation throughout much of the film.
Bonus Disc: If you were a fan of this film when it first came out then you may enjoy this particular "Collector's edition Steelbook" package, which features a bonus disk chocked with extra's including multiple trailers, behind the scenes footage and an interesting documentary that talks about the ransom based kidnappings that take place in places like Mexico on a regular basis. Also discussed somewhat is the history of this story which originally came from a novel and had an initial film made about it starring Scott Glenn several years ago.

A conventional boy-and-his-horse story set against the red rocks of remote Australian mountains. (If there's a wide-screen edition, grab it. The scenery is one of the movie's strongest features.) Tom Burlinson is Jim Craig, a young man left stranded after his father's death who is struggling to save the family farm. He proves his manhood during a hair-raising hunt over the wooded slopes in search of an escaped stallion. The great, grizzled, Australian character actor Jack Thompson (the idealistic lawyer in Breaker Morant) is the tough, older horseman who takes the lad under his wing. The director, George Miller (not to be confused with the action-master who made the Mad Max films) allows costar Kirk Douglas to mug and grimace and prance far too much in a duel role as a pair of lovable old coots who hate each other's guts. Luckily, one of the coots has a handsome daughter (Sigrid Thornton, an Elizabeth McGovern-type with grit), who also has a way with horses. So it isn't all rocks and pine trees. --David Chute
Description
With its unforgettably heroic story, its stunning cinematography, and acting performances that are uniformly excellent, THE MAN FROM SNOWY RIVER is one thrilling adventure you won't want to miss. Set during the 1880's, when the Australian frontier was as wild and dangerous as the American West, the film follows the exploits of a handsome youth (Tom Burlinson) who sets out to tame a wild herd of horses. Taking on a challenge many men had attempted before him, he rides deep into the treacherous and untamed wilderness of his native timberlands where boys become men fast - or die trying. Featuring Kirk Douglas in a remakable dual role and highlighted by a climactic chase involving 40 horsemen and 90 wild stallioins thundering across snow-covered peaks, THE MAN FROM SNOWY RIVER is destined to become a legendary film!

The Man from Snowy River.......2007-07-10
For lovers of horses and the outdoors, it's hard to beat this title. Yes, old Kirk hams it up shamelessly as Spur, but hey, it's still Kirk Douglas! Other performances are uniformly excellent, particularly Burlinson, Thornton, and Jack Thompson (the defense lawyer in "Breaker Morant") playing the leathery Clancy, a revered expert horseman who quietly mentors Jim. Grand, old-fashioned story-telling.

Still Sizzles.......2007-08-22
If you enter with tongue firmly planted in cheek, and disbelief heartily suspended, the Flint series will not disappoint. James Coburn was the master of the slow-burn, and underrated as a comic actor--which is a shame, because the series is comedic in nature, despite the over the top earnestness. highly recommended!
Great spy comedy and adventure.......2007-07-29
What's with these reviews that are simply parroting the DVD contents and Amazon's own description? Nothing like trying to stuff your review numbers with garbage in an attempt to make the top 1000, 500 or whatever. Make it a real review or shut up!
That said, if you have not seen the Flint movies, do so! Envisioned as a competitor to the James Bond franchise, the Flint movies follow the adventures of secret-agent, super-playboy, part mad-scientist Derek Flint. Played by James Coburn (one of the last people to be personally trained by Bruce Lee), the movies are part tongue-in-cheek with plenty of action. Yes, the special effects are dated, but the plots are still pretty darn good. May people consider the movies to be a simple spoof on James Bond, kinda like the Dean Martin Matt Helm movies. The Austin Power's telephone ring - taken right off the Flint movies. It's the telephone ring on the Presidential Hotline to Lloyd Cramden's. The soundtracks from both movies were recently released - by popular demand. Not bad for 30 year old movies!
In Like Flint: The last film that 20th Century Fox filmed in CinemeScope, this sets Flint against some of the world's wealthiest women, bent on world domination. How? By brainwashing them with hair-dryers at the Fabulous Face salon, located on a private island.....
Our Man Flint: This sets Flint against some of the world's brightest scientists, bent on world domination. How? By controlling the weather. The machine is located on a, well, a private island.....
OK, so the plots are similar, but come on. Flint making "bloooba, bloooba" sounds - communicating with dolphins. Moving around in space via his sonic belt buckle. Nailing a fly with his cigarette blow-gun. The gymnastic fight scene. The weightless battle in space. All priceless moments. Watch these two movies and you'll be thinking "so that's where (insert movie name here) got the idea!"
Excellent Service.......2007-05-12
Item was perfect, exactly as described and it shipped immediately! Great seller!

Film Noir Architecture at its Finest!!.......2007-07-26
While I cannot speak to the Jack Palance film, I can say that I am very enthusiastic indeed that Blueprint for Murder is FINALLY coming out in public release. This one never made it to VHS, even, and could only be gotten via bootleg copies on ebay--and happily so! This is a taut little low-budget thriller, with Jean Peters as the step-mom with ice-water in her veins and dollar signs in her eyes; and Joseph Cotten is her earnest, bumbling brother-in-law whose hormones cloud his judgment as to her dark, dark intentions--at least for a little while! Peters is just sensational, embodying a fetching femme fatale who is both seeringly voluptuous and deeply dangerous. She really steals the show here. Cotten is effective in his ineffectiveness, but he proves right in the end. While not of the caliber of Double Indemnity or Out of the Past, owing to a rather flat, stodgy pictorial style and mise en scene, the film is really story/character/actor driven, and is very engrossing. There are a lot of movies coming out under the rubric of Film Noir that are not even close to Film Noir (e.g., Daisy Kenyon) but when you call something FN it sells, I guess. Blueprint for Murder is the real deal, though. It is great to see some truly obscure ones making it to DVD. Now, how about the original version of Caught with Robert Ryan? Well, until then, enjoy Blueprint for Muder and look closely at what's inscribed on your vitamins!
Nice double feature.......2007-06-29
Here's a cool double feature. A Blueprint for Murder is a James Cotten-starring film noir that's mostly forgotten. The second feature is a period film starring Jack Palance as a creepy murder in a Jack-the-Ripper mold.
I'm glad they're finally getting around to these forgotten films...
