Riding the strange '50s nostalgia wave that swept through America during the late 1970s (caused by TV shows like Happy Days and films like American Graffiti), Grease became not only the word in 1978, but also a box-office smash and a cultural phenomenon. Twenty years later, this entertaining film adaptation of the Broadway musical received another successful theatrical release, which included visual remastering and a shiny new Dolby soundtrack. In this 2002 DVD release, Grease lovers can also now see it in the correct 2:35 to 1 Panavision aspect ratio, and see retrospective interviews with cast members and director Randal Kleiser. All these stylistic touches are essential to the film's success. Without the vibrant colors, unforgettably campy and catchy tunes (like "Greased Lightning," "Summer Nights," and "You're the One That I Want"), and fabulously choreographed, widescreen musical numbers, the film would have to rely on a silly, cliché-filled plot that we've seen hundreds of times. As it is, the episodic story about the romantic dilemmas experienced by a group of graduating high school seniors remains fresh, fun, and incredibly imaginative.

The young, animated cast also deserves a lot of credit, bringing chemistry and energy to otherwise bland material. John Travolta, straight from his success in Saturday Night Fever, knows his sexual star power and struts, swaggers, sings, and dances appropriately, while Olivia Newton-John's portrayal of virgin innocence is the only decent acting she's ever done. And then there's Stockard Channing, spouting sexual double-entendres as Rizzo, the bitchy, raunchy leader of the Pink Ladies, who steals the film from both of its stars. Ignore the sequel at all costs. --Dave McCoy

Description

John Travolta solidified his position as the most versatile and magnetic screen presence of the decade in this film version of the smash hit play Grease. Recording star Olivia Newton-John made her American film debut as Sandy, Travolta's naive love interest. The impressive supporting cast reads like a "who's who" in this quintessential musical about the fabulous '50s. Grease is not just a nostalgic look at a simpler decade--it's an energetic and exciting musical homage to the age of rock 'n' roll!

4 out of 5 stars Energetic high school musical set in the 1950s.......2007-07-06

Remember those school productions of "Grease" - well this is the film that everyone remembers, based on the long-running Broadway show.

The songs are deliberately cheesy, the acting over the top, the teenagers look about 30, but it's all pretty good fun.

Comparing this to "High School Musical", which has real teenagers one realises that "Grease" is not about teenagers at all but a 1950s that probably never existed. Indeed "Grease" was part of the 1950s nostalgia phenomenon of the 1970s along with "Happy Days" and "American Graffiti" that continued with films such as "Back to the Future" and "Stand By Me" in the 1980s. America was harking back to a kinder, simpler, innocent era post-Vietnam, Civil Rights, and Watergate.

"Grease" still holds up as decent entertainment today.

Paul Newman and his Butch Cassidy director, George Roy Hill, made a very original comedy in this 1977 story of an over-the-hill player/coach (Newman) for a lousy hockey team who gets results when he teaches his players to get dirty. One of the most hilariously profane movies ever to come out of Hollywood, this is the kind of film that makes its own rules as it goes along. Newman is very good, and while Hill goes for the gusto in terms of capturing the violence of this world, his instinct for comedy has never been sharper. Great support from Strother Martin, Paul Dooley, and the rest. --Tom Keogh

One of the best hockey movies ever made. Even those who are not huge hockey fans will find entertaining.

5 out of 5 stars Slap Shot.......2007-07-04

This wildly profane film is consistently funny, and often side-splitting. And Newman's Reggie adds an element of poignancy; he's a perennial rogue with plenty of charm, but hardly a responsible adult, evidenced by his failed marriage to Francine (Jennifer Warren), for whom he still carries a torch. Veteran character actor Strother Martin makes the perfect weasel as smarmy team manager Joe McGrath, and Andrew Duncan is memorable as a radio announcer with the worst toupee on the planet.

Crude in parts, but hilarious bush league hockey! Many "laugh out loud" sceens sure to amuse fans of "ole time hockey." The Hanson brothers add great Canadian humor.

This 1993 film by David Anspaugh (Hoosiers) is slowly building a reputation as a minor highlight of '90s movies. Based on a true story, Rudy stars Sean Astin as Rudy Ruettiger, a blue-collar kid whose father (Ned Beatty) worships Notre Dame football but who would never dare to dream that any of his sons could be a part of the team. The film is entirely about Ruettiger's ceaseless if sometimes wavering commitment toward that goal, despite tremendous obstacles in physical stature, education requirements, the dismissiveness of coaches, poverty, his father's envy, and endless delays of one kind or another. This is the sort of film that looks back on a life and says the battle was its own reward, not the glory. Astin is very moving as a boy who becomes a man and watches his world change, often in unexpected ways, through painful determination. Great support from Beatty, Lili Taylor as a hometown girl, and Robert Prosky and Charles S. Dutton as two valuable mentors. --Tom Keogh

5 out of 5 stars A Testament To the Power of Determination and Fulfilling Your Dreams.......2007-09-06

"Rudy" is one of the those special films that comes along which can truly change people's lives through its inspiration, and its power to live your dreams no matter the obstacles that are placed before you. In a great sense, it is a power of the American dream, that anyone, when given the opportunity, can fulfill their dreams and ambitions. Everyone who lives in this country, and everyone who has ideas and notions of the United States, understands that the American dream is about being given the opportunity.

"Rudy" is one of the greatest sports films ever made. The film was put together by the same team that gave us "Hoosiers" several years earlier. It's obvious that they love stories about the underdog, and Rudy Ruettiger certainly falls into that category. Some of the best films made are underdog stories. "Rocky" is one of the best. However, what makes "Rudy" and "Hoosiers" special is that they are based on real people and events.

Rudy Ruettiger is a young man who has but one dream that he has had since he was a small boy: to be a Notre Dame football player. No one thinks he can do it. Not even his own family believes that he is capable of fulfilling this larger than life ambition. "Notre Dame is for rich kids. It's not for us," says his father. "Don't waste your life chasing a stupid dream." This is the attitude of virtually everyone around Rudy. He's not especially big or even athletic, but he's got what most other players lack: heart. He is able to win over the coaches and teammates with his grit, determination, and unyielding desire to do everything it takes to make the Notre Dame team the best in the country, even if it means taking a beating every day during practice.

Fulfilling dreams is often a difficult and even daunting task. First, Rudy must get accepted into the university of Notre Dame. He's over at Holy Cross eagerly picking up his mail to see if he has been accepted. This isn't as easy as it seems as he is rejected one semester after another. Sean Astin gives the performance of his life in this film. He's able to make the audience share in his frustrations and doubts, while picking us up with his enthusiasm and over-zealous behavior regarding the football team.

Rudy's next hurtle is to make the football team. This is no easy task either as he has to make sure to give 110% just to make sure that the coaches see that he won't give up.

Finally, Rudy's next obstacle, and perhaps his biggest, is to find a way to dress for one game so that he can officially be recognized as a member of the Notre Dame football team. After all, this is his truest desire; to play in a game. The other accomplishments are merely steps toward this ultimate goal.

Anyone with a beating heart can't help but feel moved and inspired during the last few minutes of the film when Rudy is finally able to take the field. The dreams of nearly twenty-four years are felt in that final moment as they are finally fulfilled, and the story and events leading us to this point make it all the more powerful. But, you cannot appreciate the destination without appreciating the journey. Rudy's story would not be half as inspired if we weren't given access to the obstacles that he had to face and overcome. As many have said, it is in the journey.

I must mention the wonderful music of Jerry Goldsmith. It adds such a dimension to this film, that I'm sure you'll hear it playing over and over in your head long after the movie is over. The drums that he has beating throughout the soundtrack seem to beat with the same determination that Rudy has; as if he is grinding out each and every day, struggling to overcome each and every obstacle.

it is simply fantastic that stories like these are brought to light, whether it be through television, books, or movies. This is a film for the entire family to enjoy. All of us, at some time or another, need to be reminded that if we have a dream, we should never, ever give up until we fulfill it. This movie is a powerful testament to all who dream, and to all who wish to accomplish their dream.

5 out of 5 stars INSPIRING A LUMP IN YOUR THROAT THE SIZE OF A GRAPEFRUIT!.......2007-08-05

I know many feel this movie is manipulative, but I like this movie a lot! The story is inspiring and the acting is very good. Sean Astin is perfect in the role of "Rudy"! Is it just another sports movie? No! It's a story about working hard to get want you want without stepping over people to get there! It's just a great flick! If your not welling up by the time Rudy is over you don't have a pulse! The DVD transfer looks very good!

5 out of 5 stars A "Wow, maybe I can, too" movie.. .......2007-07-23

I loved Rudy..I loved the accuracy of Rudy's family in the movie. I am also of a similar Irish descent and I know that family way of staying the same "keep what you've got, don't lose it all by chasing a dream that might not work out" type of thinking and advice. MAN... do I know it well.
A wonderful breakout.. a "do what ever it takes" movie to get what you really want and what you really love.
A must see.

4 out of 5 stars good mix of fact and fiction...........2007-07-17

Charles S. Dutton's character didn't exist. In reality, The REAL Rudy reported that this character (and a couple others) were composites of people who inspired him and helped him throughout his life. Too, the ending isn't exactly the way it happened "in reality." But then again this IS hollywood isn't it?

What I can say is that Sean Astin takes the role of Rudy and makes it real! He BECOMES Rudy. I don't know how much he had a chance to interact with the real Rudy prior to doing the film but it is truly amazing to see how Astin's performance comes across. He's endearing, believable and lovable. This is, without a doubt, Astin's best performance ever. It's proof that he has great acting talent... Talent that has unfortunately not been tested on the level of Rudy since... well, since RUDY.

I'm glad to see this movie out on DVD. it's one of the few that are musts for the lover of the sports film (a la Hoosiers). There are many films about sports and sports figures. There are many stories where David conquers Goliath... but there is only one Rudy!

5 out of 5 stars Rudy.......2007-07-13

Directed by David Anspaugh ("Hoosiers") and based on a true story, this triumphant film recounts the incredible odyssey of Ruetigger (played by a pitch-perfect Sean Astin), from dyslexic, small-town nobody to Holy Cross student, stadium groundskeeper, and unlikely tryout for the fabled Fighting Irish. Rudy's rugged path to achieving his dream is an admirable, uplifting journey, and Astin is tremendously likeable in the role, winning your heart and respect. Ned Beatty (as Rudy's humble dad), Charles Dutton, and Jason Miller round out a top-notch cast in this skillfully executed crowd-pleaser.

Since audiences are inclined to F/X spectacle, it was easy to understand the 1998 box-office battle between Armageddon and Deep Impact, which shared almost exactly the same premise. But two films about the now-obscure long-distance runner Steve Prefontaine? Without Limits and Prefontaine were in production at the same time, with the cheaper Prefontaine rushed into theaters in 1997 while Without Limits was held back until the fall of '98. As it turned out, neither movie scored a deep impact at the box office, but Without Limits is much more satisfying as a competent, heartfelt slice of sports history. Billy Crudup (a rising star who strongly resembles the film's producer, Tom Cruise, in both looks and intensity) plays Prefontaine, or "Pre," the mustachioed runner who blazed out of Coos Bay, Oregon, in the late 1960s. The movie grazes across the major events of Pre's career at the University of Oregon, where he blew away the competition and positioned himself as the leading American runner (and a charismatic hunk) going into the 1972 Olympic Games in Munich--that star-crossed competition at which Arab terrorists kidnapped and killed members of the Israeli team. Though the film suffers from some of the built-in problems of the true-life biopic, director Robert Towne (who earlier made a remarkable track-and-field picture, Personal Best) captures the texture of the athletes' world. Acting honors go to Donald Sutherland, turning in an emotional performance as coach Bill Bowerman; while tutoring Pre, Bowerman was tinkering with some waffle-soled running shoes, a hobby that later became a little company called Nike. --Robert Horton

Description

What defines greatness? Who wins life's toughest contests? How much of a role do mental and psychological challenges play amid physical ones? "What It Takes" seeks to answer these questions and others. The documentary profiles four elite Ironman triathletes - three Canadians and one Australian who together have won 6 world championships and dozens of major races - and follows behind the scenes for a year as they quest for the 2005 world championship in Kona, Hawaii. Running just over 98 minutes, the movie includes footage of the athletes training, racing, and resting, and also opening up in extensive interviews to share their thoughts and feelings. Viewers learn much about the sport of triathlon and the duel for athletic supremacy, but also about the very human issues which confront the four athletes in an up-and-down, unpredictable year.

The movie was shot at 24 frames per second on a Panasonic SDX-900, and is presented in 16:9 widescreen format. Its rich cinematic feel and sweeping visual imagery from places around the globe - including Australia, Canada, Dubai, and numerous locations in the United States, including Hawaii - combine with compelling storylines to produce a fascinating narrative about four athletes, four human beings, and one dream, the Ironman world championship.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars "It's the hardest thing in the world to believe in something, if you do it's a miracle.".......2007-08-28

WITHOUT LIMITS is a beautifully filmed biopic about the great American long distance runner Steve Prefontaine. The movie follows Prefontaine (Billy Crudup) from his high school days in Coos Bay, Oregon to his recruitment at the University of Oregon in Eugene by legendary track coach Bill Bowerman (Donald Sutherland). WITHOUT LIMITS focuses on the relationship between the track star and his legendary coach from their first meeting, through their years together preparing for the 1972 Olympics in Munich, Prefontaine's decline, and his gradual emergence as a powerful long distance contender and initial preparation for the 1976 Olympics in Montreal. The movie also has a subplot about Prefontaine's relationship with Mary Marckx (Monica Potter).

The overall plotting of WITHOUT LIMITS follows the basic structure of a sports biopic and does a good job at telling the story. Steve Prefontaine lived an interesting life and anyone who is interested in learning more about the man would probably enjoy and benefit from watching the film. Yet, even though the movie follows the basic structure of a sports biopic, it is much better than most pictures in the genre for two reasons.

The first is the acting. Billy Crudup was cast as Prefontaine because of the similarities between himself and producer Tom Cruise. However, unlike Cruise, Crudup actually shows more than a semblance of acting talent. He actually has the goods. Monica Potter is adorable as Prefontaine's focal love interest in the movie, Mary Marckx. Matthew Lillard has a small but well-developed role as one of Prefontaine's running mates, Roscoe Devine. And last but not least is Donald Sutherland giving one of the finer performances in his career portraying legendary track coach and eventual Nike founder, Bill Bowerman.

The second thing that makes WITHOUT LIMITS stand out above other sport biopics is the cinematography. Prefontaine grew up in the beautiful state of Oregon. The filmmakers took advantage of that fact and filmed most of the location shots in Oregon. This allowed the spectacular scenery to make up for slow points in the story. For example, there are a few times in the movie where a scene is just a montage of Prefontaine running. The location and setting takes those shots and augments them from something ordinary into a pictured sequence of art.

WITHOUT LIMITS is a great film to watch if you enjoy running and or have an interest in Prefontaine. It's also a just a great movie in general.

The DVD only features some brief written tidbits about the cast and crew and a trailer.

If you are a runner and like movies, you will love this movie. I knew nothing about Steve Prefontaine prior to getting serious about running and now I can't get enough. I think the movie does a great job of acurately portraying the life of this legend as well as his legendary coach and his time at Oregon and in the Olympics. The casting for this moving is perfect, Donald Sutherland and Billy Crudup do a great job in my opinion of playing their respective characters. Highly recommended!

5 out of 5 stars run away with it.......2007-03-10

This dvd was spectacular. I would recommend it to anyone in need of a little inspiration.

Without Limits is the best running movie I have ever seen. If this movie cannot motivate you, better call an ambulance. Great American character. Need to be more Steve Prefontaine's out there. Must see if you are a runner. Great movie even if you are not.

This effects-heavy, 1994 remake of the 1951 film starring Janet Leigh and Keenan Wynn is all computer-generated pizzazz, with none of the charm or imagination of the original. Aimed squarely at children this time, the story focuses on a boy who gets some divine intervention on behalf of his favorite ball club. Christopher Lloyd plays the head angel, and Danny Glover is good as the team's manager, but the real star of the film--for better or worse--is the software that makes a glowing, celestial presence on the field seem real. --Tom Keogh

5 out of 5 stars Superior sports drama. Today's youth have a lot to learn from Gracie Bowen.......2007-08-13

I know what you are probably thinking. You're thinking something like, "Oh, Great! Just what we don't need. Another underdog sports movie!" Well, before dismissing this film as such, you might want to watch it really carefully and take some time out to think about a few things. The heart that Gracie displays in this film is something that every youth needs to see, and exhibit, today, especially in light of how "lazy" today's youth seem to be. Especially with how they seem to expect to have everything handed to them on a silver platter. Well, I'm sorry to report on the reality, but victory does not come this way. It only comes with determination and perseverence, which Gracie demonstrated to the maximum degree. This film also made me realize that both women and minorities have absolutely NOTHING to complain about in today's world. What Gracie faced in 1978 was REAL sexism and descrimination. Hey, I'm a guy and I thought it completely unfair the way she was treated and I was rooting for her all the way!

This film also reminded me of "Invincible", about the true story of Vince Papale who, although being up in years, got a chance to play for the Philadelphia Eagles. After viewing both "Gracie" and "Invincible", I'm left to thinking that there is not a coach or recruiter alive today that would not give their arm and leg for players like Gracie Bowen and Vince Papale--players who have HEART and really LOVE the game they play, and are not just a couple of posers who are just in it for the money and fame.

Bottom line is, I highly recommend this film. The acting is convincing and the story is very inspiring. Well worth at least one viewing

5 out of 5 stars Solid plotting in a genuine story of reality and triumph.......2007-07-24

The fact that this quiet yet beautiful gem of a film was released on the same weekend as the summer blockbuster "Knocked Up" may give some indication as to why it came and went relatively quickly in the theaters. Still, if you saw the previews for this and/or went to see it when it came out, chances are you agree that it was an impressively well-told story of courage, redemption, and the realization that life simply is never perfect, regardless of how much effort is put forth.

Contemporary sport films have become a distinctive genre that is all their own, and simply seeing the poster for this film may instantly suggest something about defying the odds, standing up against adversity, and meeting with huge successes that are the result of hard work. Isn't that, after all, the general formula of many of the inspirational sports movies that are out there?

However, while "Gracie" emphasizes all those things and efficiently plays out those typical messages, there is something much stronger that makes this film worth your time. It is loosely based on true-life events of actress Elisabeth Shue, who made a name for herself with the 1980's hit "Misadventures in Babysitting." Beyond her acting career, though, there is a story of her childhood that is carried through the character of Gracie Bowens, a teenager who is growing up with a slew of soccer-playing brothers. You can sense immediately that she is struggling with feelings of inadequacy as she fights to be part of the family athleticism, but when a jarring tragedy strikes with her oldest brother, so begins her journey toward making a difference and taking his spot on the varsity soccer team. Gracie knows she cannot take this on without her father's consent in training her--a tall order that creates several barriers against her, even with her own parents. If there's anything that this movie strives for most, it's the sobering honesty of the families, schools, and communities that are not always supportive of what certain people deem as valuable.

Perhaps the single factor that drew me in the most about this film was the execution of Gracie's rebellion early in the plot. In an attempt to curb the pain of her family's loss and cope with Dad's rejection, the young girl compensates with alcohol, skimpy outfits, and flings with guys that go well beyond first base. The scenes were so thoughtfully done, and there was a certain authenticity with how a 15-year-old girl in that situation would be feeling and reacting. Though it's clear that her father's attentiveness would be the one thing to pull her away from his danger, the entire issue is proof of the theory that involvement in sports affords young people the discipline to stay out of trouble.

Beyond this, the theme of "Gracie" basically focuses on the price we pay for pursuing a far-fetched dream (and let's face it, it's not usually a cheap deal). Our heroine is a girl who obviously has the passion and grit to do well, but it is hardly a smooth road, and much of the film focuses less on the glory and more on how much this young lady must do every single day to have a shot at what she is doing. Even when she manages to earn the opportunity to try out for the guys' team, the male world of soccer is not exactly kind to the likes of a girl trying to ease her way in. Viewers will find themselves searching hard for a moment during which they can share in celebrating Gracie's success, but the truth is, the film's plot makes it as tough for us as they do for the main character. The ending is enough to generate a smile without feeling that the story went too far with the saccharine and unrealistic, and to me, that is the mark of a unique, credible movie.

If you did not get to catch this film when it was originally released in theaters, I hope you will get your family together to watch it when it arrives on DVD in September. Aside from a solid script that has something important to say for anyone who watches, it is filled with strong, hard-fought performances from the entire cast. Carly Schroeder has the ideal "athletic beauty" combination that film critics have been talking about regarding her performance, and though she is a relative newcomer (she had a recurring role in Hilary Duff's "Lizzie McGuire" TV series and theatrical film of the same name, but this is her first major role), she lends all the right elements to the character and indicates a promising future career in the Hollywood business. As Gracie, she is a bag of bolts, a fighting spirit, and while she thrives under her father's careful guidance, the real test comes when it is time to get out there and show everyone if she can do it. The way Schroeder executes it is brilliant, and there's no doubt that the casting crew got it just right when they chose her. Dermot Mulroney is terrific as always, delivering big as a grieving and conflicted father. His love for his little girl--his only daughter--is never questioned, but his hesitation in helping her realize her biggest goal involves far more intense factors, especially in a society where female prejudice is still a major issue. Elisabeth Shue--who is, again, the inspiration for the title character--steps in as Gracie's patient mother. Always hopeful, yet never afraid to come forward with the truth, it is an all-around enjoyable film that seeks to inspire in its own way.

Penny Marshall's popular 1992 comedy sheds light on a little-known chapter of American sports history with its story of a struggling team in the All-American Girls Professional Baseball League. The league was formed when the recruiting of soldiers during World War II resulted in a shortage of men's baseball teams. The AAGPBL continued after the war (until 1954), and Marshall's movie depicts the league in full swing, beginning when a savvy baseball scout (Jon Lovitz) finds a pair of promising new players in small-town Oregonian sisters (Geena Davis, Lori Petty). The sisters are signed to play for the Rockford Peaches near Chicago, whose new manager (Tom Hanks) is a former home-run king who wrecked his career with alcoholism. They're all a bunch of underdogs, and Marshall (with a witty script by Lowell Ganz and Babaloo Mandel) does a fine job of establishing a colorful team of supporting players including Madonna and (in her movie debut) Rosie O'Donnell. It's a conventional Hollywood sports story (Marshall's never been one to take dramatic risks), but the stellar cast is delightful, and the movie's filled with memorable moments, witty dialogue, and agreeable sentiment. And just remember: there's no crying in baseball! --Jeff Shannon

4 out of 5 stars Review of A League of Their Own.......2007-08-13

I bought this DVD because I loved the movie and I collect movies with dancing scenes. I loved the bar room dance scene it is very good and entertaining.

5 out of 5 stars A League of Their Own.......2007-07-11

Heartwarming and hilarious, the movie features one of Tom Hanks most amusing performances as a former baseball star turned alcoholic manager. And all the female players under his shaky leadership make up a terrific ensemble, including, believe it or not, Madonna.

5 out of 5 stars An oldie but a goodie........2007-06-21

I remember watching this movie when I was younger a few years after it came out on VHS. I'll admit that then, I obviously didn't understand the WWII concept (as I was maybe 7 or 8 years old) but it still was a movie that I continually loved to watch. Even now, roughly 15 years after its release, I still thoroughly enjoy this film.

So what's this movie about? It's World War II and there's a need for American sports to raise morale. With the men away, who is going to play? The women, of course! This movie shows the beginnings of mainly two specific teams in the All American Girls Professional Baseball League. From the ups and downs stemming from the game, to the ups and downs stemming from the women's personal lives, this movie gives us a glimpse into the lives of women living during the WWII era.

So what's to like about this movie? First of all, there's an abundance of famous actors and actresses including Tom Hanks, Geena Davis, Madonna, and Rosie O'Donnell. Looking back, I truly didn't appreciate how wonderful the casting was for this movie. Second, this movie forces a ton of emotions out of you. Some scenes are funny, some scenes show hope, and some scenes are sad. It isn't just about baseball. It's mainly about the lives of the women playing the game. Third, anyone, no matter what age, will enjoy this movie. From the older folks who can remember what it was like living during this period, to younger people like myself who simply enjoy the humor, this movie provides so much entertainment.

And what's not to like? Nothing really. As I said above, younger children will like this movie although they probably won't understand the war aspect. Apart from that, this movie contains no other negatives.

When it comes to movies that all will enjoy, A League of Their Own is at the top of my list.

4 out of 5 stars There's no crying in baseball!.......2007-06-15

The men go over seas for war. The All-American Baseball League needs to make money, so they create and All-American Girls Baseball League.

Dottie Hanson (Geena Davis) and her "kid sister Kit," (Lori Petty) play in a local softball league and get recruited to play in the new major league. Jimmy Dugan, (Tom Hanks) a washed up a former baseball player, gets fed up with the girls he manages but then gets used to the change of gender. Dottie ia an awesome catcher and hitter who everyone loves, while Kit is an okay pitcher and hitter who everyone likes. Hanson is the best on the team and everyone knows it, Kits gets jelous and things don't work out too well between them. Madonna (Mae) and Rosie O'Donnell (Doris) are also starring on the team. All the cast members did an awesome job acting.

I thought this movie was going to be boring, because my mom picked it out but it turns out I was laughing hysterically and enjoying th movie. This classic, major league comedy will catch your eye. "A League of Their Own is own of my favorite movies and will soon be yours too.

I recommend this to mostly eight years old and up because of mild language. Other than that this movie flabbergasted me, it is awesome! You will love this movie once you see it!

    5 out of 5 stars All-time favorite movie.......2007-04-25

This has got to be my favorite movie of all time. I was a big fastpitch player back in middle school and high school and when this movie came out I was pretty excited. Great actors, great story, and inspiring that it was actually based on a true story. Movies just aren't as good now-a-days like they used to be back in the 80s and 90s. This is a must see!

While women shed more than a few tears over Love Story back in 1970, men had their equivalent with Brian's Song on TV. This biopic about the Chicago Bears' Brian Piccolo and Gale Sayers is no mere sports film. It's one of those transcendent stories that struck a rare cultural nerve, a sensitive film about love, friendship, cancer, racial harmony, and football that came along at just the right time. James Caan is at his free-spirited best as Piccolo, and Billy Dee Williams is very charming as the quiet Sayers destined for superstardom. Roommates and rivals, these two rookies soon become best friends because of their competitive natures and complementary personalities. When Piccolo becomes stricken with cancer, his relentless will to live inspires the talented Sayers to reach his athletic potential. Jack Warden, as the masterful coach George Halas, superbly manipulates the ying and yang relationship for all it's worth. Michel Legrand's melancholy theme still lingers in the mind as one of the all-time greats. --Bill Desowitz

    5 out of 5 stars WOW!.......2007-08-25

This movie is well done by Caan and Williams. It was based on the true story of football player Brian Piccolo. The actors made it look true to life. I have both the 71 version and 01 version. Both are good because the newer version had the same feel, just different actors who played the roles of Piccolo and Sayers, who, by the way, were just as good. Well worth the money I spent on it.

    5 out of 5 stars Brian's Song.......2007-07-03

Based on Gale Sayers's autobiography, this indelible made-for-TV movie tells the true story of a friendship born through football that ends tragically. Coming off his success in "The Godfather," Caan is terrific as the spirited Piccolo, whose gutsy yet graceful attitude inspires Sayers (played with quiet, rookie confidence by Williams) to achieve his full potential. The craggy, always reliable Jack Warden co-stars as Bears Coach George Halas, and Shelly Fabares (from TV's "Donna Reed Show") is also solid as Brian's steadfast wife, Joy. This poignant, inspirational tale unfolds over just 75 minutes, but keep the Kleenex handy, as few remain unmoved by the end.

5 out of 5 stars A Classic for the Ages.......2007-05-20

I have watched Brian's Song many, many times over the years and with every viewing, I am warmed by this story of friendship, courage and hope. It is based on the true story of Brian Piccolo and Gale Sayers, two Chicago Bears football players who played back in the 1960's.

Like many movies based on life, certain aspects of the story are fictionalized. For example, Brian did not have cancer in his right lung as the movie attests, but embryonal cell carcinoma in his chest cavity that eventually metastasized to his left breast and left lung, heart and liver--and even into his jaw. He did not die as easily or look nearly as healthy as Cann does; his illness and death are really sanitized and "Hollywood-ized". Also, although Brian and Gale were good friends in real life, they were not best friends. However, Caan and Williams do a brilliant job portraying their characters and it is easy to believe from their performances that these two characters do indeed care for one another.

There are several moving moments in this movie. The locker room scene is particularly touching because many of the players featured in this scene had heard the *real* Gale Sayers tell them that "Pic is sick. . .real sick" only a year and a half before, so we can assume the tears welling up in the players' eyes are genuine. Ed O'Bradovich and Dick Butkus, both of whom were friends of Piccolo's (and were pallbearers at his funeral), make appearances in the film.

Another great touch is the archival footage of Sayers and Piccolo running the ball and making touchdowns. Not only does the footage remind us of what an amazing player Sayers was and the dogged determination to succeed that Brian possessed, it reminds us that these people were real, that they did indeed exist. These "real life" touches adds a lot of poignancy to the story. Most of the footage of the real Brian comes from a game the Bears played against the Pittsburgh Steelers on November 9, 1969--the only game the Bears won that season. Although he did not know it, Brian was already very sick with cancer during this game, yet he played his heart out and even scored a touchdown--which is captured in the movie. This was the second to the last game he ever played. He was diagnosed with cancer only a week and a half later.

A final touch that really "makes" the movie is the musical score by Michal Legrand. The Brian's Song theme is a perfect blend of hope and sadness and is enough to make you cry all by itself. Interestingly, the real Brian's wife, Joy, said that Legrand was one of his favorite composers.

The DVD contains a few "extras" including a so-so audio commentary by Billy Dee Williams and James Caan. The commentary is witty in some spots, but it does not provide much insight into the movie's "behind the scenes" elements. Caan reminds us that the movie was made only about a year after Brian Piccolo's death and several times he mentions that he felt the "weight" of playing the role of a person that the entire Chicago Bears team dearly loved.

If you enjoy this movie, I highly recommend that you read Jeannie Morris' biography of Brian Piccolo entitled Brian Piccolo: A Short Season. It tells the whole story of Brian's life both on and off the field and goes into great detail about his illness and the tremendous courage and humor with which he faced it.

    5 out of 5 stars Great classic ... .......2007-05-07

I remember seeing this film with my girlfriends a long time ago. Haven't seen it ever since. That's why I bought it, I was so impressed with it at that time and still am. It's a great classic, I recommend it to everyone. Btw it teaches you a lot about true friendship.

5 out of 5 stars Great when you need a good cry!.......2007-03-10

I first saw Brian's Song when I was about 13 years old. It made me laugh and cry. My sisters and I would wait anxiously for it to be re-run. This is a great sports movie about relationships and like "Remember the Titans" it is based on a true story which makes it even more poignant.

It is a 30 year old made for TV movie, so the production values are not great, but the story and the performances by Billy Dee Williams and James Caan are amazing.

I recommend this to anyone looking for a funny, sad and touching movie

Bend It Like Beckham is true girl power. This glorious comedy centers on Jess (Parminder Nagra), an Indian girl born in England whose only desire is to become a football--or, as we say on this side of the Atlantic, soccer--star like her idol, David Beckham; but her traditional family refuses to even consider it. With the help of her new friend Juliet (Keira Knightley), Jess secretly joins a girls' team under the guidance of a male coach (Jonathan Rhys Meyers). As the team starts to gain some attention, Jess's secret can't be kept forever. The story of Bend It Like Beckham is so genuine and detailed that it transcends all the sports-movie formulas that it also fulfills with cheeky exuberance. Wonderfully acted, and written and directed with loving care by Gurinder Chadha (Bhaji on the Beach, What's Cooking?), this movie is pure delight from start to finish. --Bret Fetzer

5 out of 5 stars Film it like brilliance..........2007-08-25

I do not normally like British films about modern life, movies about foreign cultures, or flicks about soccer. So I should have been supremely indifferent to "Bend It Like Beckham." Unfortunately, I loved it. It won my heart by defeating my various prejudices (Knightly, for instance, is too anorexic for my taste) due to its fine acting, interesting script, likeable attitude and tone. It is fun, and it has a point made in many prior films and books, but it makes it with a twist that keeps it fresh. There are no true villains in the piece, and the heroes are flawed, but everyone is three-dimensional. This is a nice achievement that is worth a second screening.

5 out of 5 stars A movie anyone can relate to. You'll see beautiful, entertaining relationships between the characters. .......2007-08-08

Watching it swept me away from my boring apartment and put a smile on my face for what seemed like the full movie. You'll not only see excellent soccer, you'll see the fascinating lives of the characters in the game.

This movie shows what happens when you try to mix two opposing cultures, and how utimately the desire for unity among human beings triumphs. It has a perfect mix of humor, love ; ) (you'll find some "lovely" scenes) , and all the other emotions we all experience. It shows love for soccer and love for eachother.

It brightened my evening to say the least.

5 out of 5 stars Best Movie Ever!.......2007-05-13

I absolutely LOVE this movie! I love the music in it, the humor of the movie, the fact that you can really relate to the characters...I feel like I really know what it's like to be a part of their life and family, even culture for that matter. Being from the United States, it was very interesting to see the different cultural aspects of an Indian family and life in London. I love this movie and I would recommend that everyone see it! OHH! I love the wedding scene as well...the colors of the dresses, the traditions, everything! Beautiful!

4 out of 5 stars Gurinder Chadha rocks!.......2007-04-19

I really enjoyed this film. The music, dancing, costumes, etc. were excellent. In the bonus features, learning to make Aloo Gobi (sp?) was fun.

I am pretty tired of the whole gay theme in almost every movie I see these days and this film was no exception. The gay Indian dude/best friend of Parminder Nagra and the best friend's mom obsessed with the fact that her daughter (Keira Knightly) might be gay, really annoyed me. It would have been nice to watch this film without those two distractions.

I'm looking forward to Gurinder's next project as the one that followed this one (Bride and Prejudice) was great!

4 out of 5 stars Another fantastic indie from Fox Searchlight.......2007-03-23

God, how I love Indies. They're funny, unique, usually somewhat dramatic like a dramedy, and special in their own way. Which is why I simply love Fox Searchlight studios: they've created movies that drop from indie heaven, and they are a fine studio. Bend it Like Beckham is in no way any exception: it's funny, smart, dramatic, special, and gives you that feel-good feeling inside. Parminder Nagra, an actress I have never seen act anywhere else, plays the Indian teenager Jess living in England with a passion for football (for us Americans, soccer). Her parents say otherwise, though, and she ends up lying and cheating out of her culture just so she can follow her dreams of one day playing professional. Her idol in life is David Beckham, much to her parents disprove. Almost in every way this girl is a rebel, and that's partly why the movie is so great. She will stop at nothing to make sure her dream is realized. Now, why, you ask, is a movie about that so appealing? Well, that's a question you'll need to see it to properly understand the answer to. The movie delivers a powerful, almost controversial message: your dreams are the most important things in your life. Put nothing ahead of them, and follow them until they come true in every way you originally imagined them to. This is a good movie to watch along with the recent film "Little Miss Sunshine," as they both deliver the same message, and are both produced by Fox Searchlight, simply the BEST in indie film producing today. Rent "Beckham," don't miss out on the fun. :)
