Product Description

Breakfast at Tiffany's
Winner of two Oscars, the romantic comedy that sparkles like diamonds! From the opening strains of Henry Mancini and Johnny Mercer's haunting, Oscar-winning song "Moon River," you'll once again be under the alluring spell of that madcap, carefree New York playgirl known as Holly Golightly (Audrey Hepburn) in this 24-carat romantic comedy based of Truman Capote's best-selling novella. George Peppard is the struggling and "sponsored" young writer who finds himself swept into Holly's dizzying, delightfully unstructured lifestyle as she determinedly scours Manhattan for a suitable millionaire to marry. The sparkling special features on this Anniversary Edition DVD only add to the luster of director Blake Edwards' timeless film classic. Patricia Neal, Buddy Ebsen, Martin Balsam and Mickey Rooney co-star; Mancini won an additional Academy Award® for his enthralling musical score.

5 out of 5 stars Romantic Audrey.......2007-09-05

I have been a fan of Audrey Hepburn since I was a little girl I wish I could have even a little of her sophistication yet be a perky woman. Her eyes draw you to her beautiful face. She has great poise and huge following, I will order more of her films.

5 out of 5 stars Awesome!.......2007-06-27

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful Value for Masterpiece Collection.......2007-01-19

Audrey Hepburn never goes out of style. I got this for my 18 year old for Christmas and she absolutely loves it. There are quite a few teenaged girls who still love Audrey as evidenced on their myspace pages.

Amazon.com essential video

Romance at its most anti-romantic--that is the Billy Wilder stamp of genius, and this Best Picture Academy Award winner from 1960 is no exception. Set in a decidedly unsavory world of corporate climbing and philandering, the great filmmaker's trenchant, witty satire-melodrama takes the office politics of a corporation and plays them out in the apartment of lonely clerk C.C. Baxter (Jack Lemmon). By lending out his digs to the higher-ups for nightly extramarital flings with their secretaries, Baxter has managed to ascend the business ladder faster than even he imagined. The story turns even uglier, though, when Baxter's crush on the building's melancholy elevator operator (Shirley MacLaine) runs up against her long-standing affair with the big boss (a superbly smarmy Fred MacMurray). The situation comes to a head when she tries to commit suicide in Baxter's apartment. Not the happiest or cleanest of scenarios, and one that earned the famously caustic and cynically humored Wilder his share of outraged responses, but looking at it now, it is a funny, startlingly clear-eyed vision of urban emptiness and is unfailingly understanding of the crazy decisions our hearts sometimes make. Lemmon and MacLaine are ideally matched, and while everyone cites Wilder's Some Like It Hot closing line "Nobody's perfect" as his best, MacLaine's no-nonsense final words--"Shut up and deal"--are every bit as memorable. Wilder won three Oscars for The Apartment, for Best Picture, Best Director, and Best Screenplay (cowritten with longtime collaborator I.A.L. Diamond). --Robert Abele

By providing a perfect hideaway for philandering bosses, the ambitious young employee reaps a series of undeserved promotions. But when Bud lends the key to big boss J.D. Sheldrake (Fred MacMurray), he not only advances his career, but his own love life as well. For Sheldrake's mistress is the lovely Fran Kubelik (Shirley MacLaine), elevator girl and angel of Bud's dreams. Convinced that he is the only man for Fran, Bud must makethe most important executive decision of his career: lose the girl...or his job. *1960: Director, Story and Screenplay, Editing, Art Direction (B&W)

5 out of 5 stars Shirley MacLaine is lovely actress.......2007-09-11

I loved Shirley MacLaine in those days, and it is because she was lovely at all, and this movie shows her charm well.
Costarring with her and Jack Lemmon gives a good result.

1 out of 5 stars Hopelessly dated.......2007-09-04

Like many of the golden age "classics," this movie simply does not hold up over time and betrays all the moral and societal restrictions of the time in which it was made. Jack Lemmon and Shirley MacLaine might as well be Rob and Laura Petrie in their separate beds -- tiptoeing around attraction and physical desires to the point of absurdity.

Other actors in the film give performances that are so stereotypical and "clever" that they belong more in a sitcom than a motion picture. True, Jack Lemmon is a great actor, but even he can't save this extremely dialog-heavy and ultimately boring movie.

The famous last scene where Jack and Shirley end up playing cards -- GIVE ME A BREAK! That's not what two people in love who ultimately find each other would end up doing. But of course, in a 1960 movie, that's what they had to settle for.

The movie works as an interesting period piece, but is hopelessly dated and an example of when movies were limited by moral and societal shackles that make them look -- today -- ridiculous.

4 out of 5 stars The Apartment.......2007-08-05

This movie is rated # 93 by Newsweek magazine in the "best 100 movies of the last century". I am collecting these movies, and I think this one should be at least # 50

4 out of 5 stars Wilder's "Falling Apart" Apartment.......2007-07-21

As a lover of old Hollywood films, I consider Billy Wilder one of the most gifted filmmakers. Interestingly, "The Apartment" is at least the eleventh film I've seen from him, while some of them are still hard to come by for me (still waiting to come across "The Lost Weekend" and "Double Indemnity"). In the past few months, a local MGM channel showed "The Private Life of Sherlock Holmes", "Love In the Afternoon", "The Fortune Cookie" and the dud "Irma La Douce". That said, I was waiting with high anticipation for "The Apartment" and...

...well, as a movie full of cleverly put-together plot, with all Wilderian ingredients added and excellent performances throughout, "The Apartment" still left something to be desired with so high a profile (recently it ranked #80 in the latest AFI 100 American Films). One word occurs to me... this film is DATED, and more than a bit.

The truth is that the mercilessly honest look at shallow life of American corporate officials could ring unpleasantly true in the 1960, when the film got its important three Oscars. Since then, however, the times have changed and I think the passing time hurt the film considerably more than, for instance, the lighter "Some Like It Hot". Still, hats off to Wilder for one of his most poignant social commentaries even put on the screen. Nowadays, filmmakers would not get away with depicting women as so naive creatures as this film somehow indicates they are.

Anyway, as you will see, I still rank "The Apartment" quite high in my personal chart of Wilder's films and I certainly won't throw "The Apartment" out of my collection. Just for the lovely Shirley MacLaine and spot-on Jack Lemmon and Fred MacMurray. And did I mention the laughs, too?

This was really a wonderful movie, the acting, the actors
and the storyline. This movie, I think, would even make it
with "todays audience".
A very believable drama with great humor.

You're sure to believe in BADDER SANTA: THE UNRATED VERSION -- once you experience this longer, funnier, and more explicit motion picture!

Instantly qualifying as a perennial cult favorite, Bad Santa is as nasty as it wants to be, and there's something to be said for comedy without compromise. The Coen brothers conceived the basic idea and served as executive producers, but it's director Terry Zwigoff (Crumb, Ghost World) who brings his unique affinity for losers and outcasts to the twisted tale of Willie T. Stokes (Billy Bob Thornton), a hard-drinking, chain-smoking, foul-mouthed sexaholic safe-cracker who targets a different department store every holiday season, playing Santa while he cases the joint with his dwarf elf-partner Marcus (Tony Cox). With comedic support from Bernie Mac, Lauren Graham, Cloris Leachman, and John Ritter in his final film, Thornton milks the lowbrow laughs with a slovenly lack of sentiment, warming Bad Santa's pickled heart just enough to please a chubby misfit (Brett Kelly, hilariously deadpan) who may or may not be mentally challenged. As dry as an arid martini and blacker than morning-after coffee, Bad Santa is an instant cure for yuletide schmaltz, and if you think this appropriately R-rated comedy is suitable for kids, your parenting skills are no better than Willie's. --Jeff Shannon

    5 out of 5 stars Classic fun.......2007-08-30

Wacky EVIL DEAD type rip w/ gore and excess nudity. Not as good as when I watched it on cable as a kid, but still essential 80's horror and a fun way to waste a boring evening. Not recomended for those who take themselves too seriously.

    5 out of 5 stars The Party's just begun!.......2007-07-27

Angela (Amelia Kinkade) has invited her friends to have a halloween bash at an old abanoned funeral parlor for a night of fun. Unknown to them, it's built on a ancient evil patch of land and unleashes a horrible curse as it transforms each of the teens into demons and one of them has protect themself from becoming a demon and battle the creatures through the night then must escape.

An outstanding cult horror comedy 80's classic that was an unexpected sleeper hit when it hit theaters in 1988 and become a horror fan's dream come true that year with some good reviews especially from variety. The make-up effects by Steve Johnson ("Ghostbusters", "Big Trouble in Little China", "Species") are terrific in these CGI times especially on Angela, b-movie fans will recongize Linnea Quigley in this movie who does a memorable moment you have to see to believe, it's an excellent combo of horror, graphic splatter and off the wall humor in this winner of a horror movie and perfect for halloween time.

DVD Review for Evil Doll Pictures by Brian L. Hollon

    3 out of 5 stars Angel's Halloween bash.......2007-03-28

OK, so the plot isn't the most original in the world, a kind of "The Amityville Horror" by way of Freddy Krueger-ish wise cracking demon monsters. "Night of the Demons" is about a bunch of likeable (but to the slasher standard unremarkable) stereotypical kids who decide to have a party in an old funeral home. After dancing and drinking for awhile they think it would be fun to have a séance and accidentally unleash the spirits that have lain dormant in the house for so long.

I will be the first to admit there a few logic problems with this movie, the biggest question was how did the monsters become bound to that house in the first place? They aren't ghosts, which would sort of make sense because it's a funeral home, but demons. How did the kids find out about the place? And dose anyone notice that nymphomaniac Suzanne (Linnea Quigley) is quiet a bit older than the other kids (though she's pretty hot in her costume). The acting is pretty atrocious, but what do you expect? The only stand out is Quigley, who was the 1980s reigning scream queen, and shows us things she can do with a tube of lipstick that are pretty wild. Even she is not very convincing.

OK, so far I have been pretty hard on the movie, but there is plenty good about it too. As I said before the kids, while not original, are pretty likable, especially Angela; well, at first anyway. It's the film's sense of humor that's it's redeeming quality. At that time horror movies were taking themselves pretty seriously (despite what you may think), and the script felt pretty light on it's feet. I first saw this movie when I was pretty young, and it scared me to death back then. It is much cornier now, but some of the disturbing images stayed with me for a long time. The gore was pretty impressive too, and that was the selling point to me for this movie. The editing was lean and sharp, and the set design was impressive considering how little money they had to work with.

Pretty good for a Halloween party movie, just don't invite the girl with the lipstick.

    4 out of 5 stars Good movie.......2007-03-26

I remember watching this film in the late 80's for the first time on VHS and now again on DVD. I've always been a fan of horror films and say
this is a good 80's horror film watch it.

Even if "nobody's perfect," Billy Wilder sometimes came close. This DVD box presents a strong cross-section of films by one of Hollywood's greatest directors, and although his early Paramount years are not covered (they're available in a different set), the box does include a couple of Wilder's woefully underappreciated autumnal gems. Chronologically speaking, 1957's Witness for the Prosecution is the earliest film in the set, a crackerjack courtroom drama derived from Agatha Christie. It gives especially tasty roles to Charles Laughton and Marlene Dietrich. With Some Like It Hot, Wilder merely created the film widely considered the best comedy of the sound era, with Tony Curtis and Jack Lemmon impersonating female musicians in the Roaring Twenties. Marilyn Monroe is the songbird tired of getting the fuzzy end of the lollipop. Wilder took home three Oscars® for The Apartment, his exquisitely bittersweet look at an organization man (Lemmon) who loans out his flat for his boss's liaisons.

One, Two, Three is a breathless Cold War comedy (and a time capsule of its era) with James Cagney as a Coca-Cola executive in Berlin. Irma La Douce teams Lemmon and Shirley MacLaine in a racy Parisian love story that became a box-office smash. With Kiss Me, Stupid, Wilder suffered a rare flop, although the once-scandalous sex comedy looks better and sharper as it ages. The Fortune Cookie, which nabbed an Oscar for Walter Matthau, is one of Wilder's most cynical tales, but the last two films in the set represent Wilder's late-career romantic flowering. The Private Life of Sherlock Holmes arranges slapstick around the melancholy, misogynistic figure of Holmes, who might just be a directorial self-portrait. Avanti! is a delightful, leisurely romance about a businessman (Lemmon again) who loosens up while in Italy settling his late father's business. It's a lovely end note for a snappy, often acerbic collection. --Robert Horton

    4 out of 5 stars great collection....but............2004-12-29

This is a great collection but why is one of the best, Double Indemnity, missing ??? It is a good collection of a genius who was such a major influence on modern film making. Both his comedy and dramatic films are in this set. I have to say that his dramas hold up a lot better then the comedy films. The constent theme of stupid women, or the whore with "a heart of gold" now seems just pathatic and not endearing.

This 1938 MGM version of the Dickens classic is not the most rewarding of the various adaptations (that honor goes to Biran Desmond Hurst's 1951 film, starring Alistair Sim), but it has a strong if narrow performance by Reginald Owen as the miser Ebenezer Scrooge. Directed by Edward L. Marin, the movie is stiffer and less imaginative than it ought to be, but there are some compensations in the supporting cast, including Leo G. Carroll, and the film debut of little June Lockhart. --Tom Keogh

A classic that's as integral a part of Christmas as lighted trees and mistletoe. Reginald Owen and Gene Lockhart star in this rewarding holiday treat.

5 out of 5 stars The Best Christmas Carol.......2007-08-24

This is by far and away the very best version of A Christmas Carol to ever be put on film (better than the terrible Alastir Sim version everyone raves about).

This movie cuts out the depressing things, like Scrooge's home being pilaged after his death and Marley removing the cloth from around his head and letting his jaw drop creepily, as well as the "too much" stuff like the scene from the past showing Scrooge and his girlfriend.

It's not overly mushy, just warm-hearted and charming, and it gets right to the point of telling the story with charm and a bright Christmas message. There are many light-hearted, fun scenes we get to see as they warm Scrooge's heart, and the movie does a wonderful job of showing us Scrooge's reclaimation in an uplifting way.

No one, but no one, can touch Reginald Owen as Scrooge. Lionel Barrymore hand-picked Reginald Owen to replace him as Scrooge for the movie. The best cast that could be assembled was already signed and the sets already built when Lionel, who'd always played Scrooge on the radio, was injured and couldn't do it. It speaks volumes that Lionel Barrymore thought enough of Reginald Owen's ability to have him be his replacement. And Lionel was right! Owen plays and looks the part perfectly.

The supporting cast is absolutely wonderful as well, including the great Gene Lockhart. Everyone from Tiny Tim to Fred, Scrooge's nephew, to the Ghosts of Christmas to Marley are superb. There is not one thing to be changed that could make this movie any better (except when Ann Sheridan says to Scrooge after he remarks how kind his old boss was, "Yes, but he's dead now."--my whole family laughs at the remark ;) ). Everything is done to complete perfection. I've watched every single version of this story, including many plays, and now I will not watch any other version because they seem so horrible by comparison. With Reginald Owen's brilliance in the part, the wonderful cast, and the wonderful interpretation and telling of the tale, nothing is more perfect than this version.

You get some good laughs with this warm, "fuzzy-feeling-inside" version and a big smile through the whole thing. It's not Christmas without watching this version.

5 out of 5 stars Essential collection to any Christmas movie collection.......2007-08-23

Beautiful movie. The special features are rare and very special to watch. Anyone who loves Christmas movies should add this movie to their collection.

4 out of 5 stars Great rendition of a classic story.......2007-02-16

This is my second favorite version of a Christmas Carol. Definitely a must-have if you enjoy the story. My favorite is the Alistair Sim version, but this one runs a very close second in my mind.

3 out of 5 stars Yes and No.......2007-01-26

This item appears in all rights and appearances to be a colorized version but it is not. It is a black and white version which is not what we were looking for. The colorized version is apparently not available on DVD as of yet from the studio. If you are looking for an original B&W version then I by all means recommend this seller.
I contacted the seller about this and they issued a return authorization without delay, therefore I would highly recommend this seller to anyone who is looking for honesty and integrity. I have rarely found that kind of customer service in online auction sites therefore in the future when I am looking for DVDs or videos I will look at this sellers available stock first.

4 out of 5 stars Christmas Carol with Reginal Owen.......2007-01-18

Of the many versions of A Christmas Carol or "Scrooge" by Charles Dickens, this one has become a favorite. Has a different slant than the other versions but delivers the same powerful message. Many versions take poetic license with Dicken's book, but this version enhances the story.

In 1963, Billy Wilder's Irma La Douce was one of the biggest box-office hits of the year, grossing twice as much as The Great Escape and The Birds. Yet this popular movie has been almost completely forgotten by film history, even to fans of Wilder or stars Jack Lemmon and Shirley MacLaine (the same trio had made a masterpiece, The Apartment, three years earlier). It doesn't represent the best work of those legends, but Irma provides tart entertainment. At least some of the movie's popularity can be chalked up to its subject, which was pretty risqué for the time: Lemmon plays a Paris policeman who falls in love with a prostitute (MacLaine). The script was adapted from a stage musical, but Wilder decided to cut the songs, instead developing the humor and romance into his own blend of bittersweet perversity; this Technicolor-fantasy Paris is kind of a dark cousin to Gigi. Lemmon is in his prime period of hand-wringing self-doubt, and MacLaine is perfectly in tune with his rhythms, especially in scenes that add tenderness to the sometimes queasy mix of moods. Ironically--given the nixing of the songs--the film won its only Oscar for André Previn's adaptation of the stage play's music into a wordless orchestral score. --Robert Horton

5 out of 5 stars A Highly Entertaining French Farce.......2007-08-01

An all time tour-de-force for Jack Lemmon and Shirley Maclaine (whose performance was Oscar nominated). Jack plays a poor schnook street cop, who bumbles his way from losing his job to pimping for Irma (Maclaine), the top hooker of the neighborhood, with whom he he falls madly in love. Jealously doing everything he can to prevent Irma from "plying her trade", Lemmon becomes his own rival in this hilarious comedy of bizarre plot twists.

2 out of 5 stars Irma la flop.......2007-04-19

This is one of my least favorite Jack Lemmon movies. The plot was slow, the jokes weren't funny. I don't know, this just didn't do it for me. It didn't seem characteristic of Billy Wilder's usual witty style.

        Description

Hollywood favorites Billy Bob Thornton (THE ALAMO), Bernie Mac (MR. 3000), and John Ritter (TV's 8 SIMPLE RULES FOR DATING MY TEENAGE DAUGHTER) star in the year's most-talked-about comedy hit, BAD SANTA. You'd better watch out -- Santa Claus Willie T. Stokes (Thornton) is coming to town and he doesn't care if you've been naughty or nice. Willie's favorite holiday tradition is to fill his sacks with loot lifted from shopping malls across the country. But this year his plot gets derailed by a wise-cracking store detective (Mac), a sexy bartender (Lauren Graham -- TV's GILMORE GIRLS), and a kid who's convinced Willie is the real Santa Claus.
