The main menu consists of a min or two on faking confidence in communication apprehension, using supporting materials, organizing your presentation (comparisons, persuading the audience including Monroe's), delivering the speech, style of speech (clarity, rhythm, parallel wording) & the delivery, the moment of truth closing (body apearance, language, eye contact, vocal varation.)
I did learn a few things since I did not take public speaking in high school nor in college. It was very easy to follow with included exadurated almost silly presentation examples to every point they taught, but never allowing it to be too moronic.

If you're looking to really learn the French language, as opposed to briefly memorizing a few phrases to help you find a bathroom or complain to the doctor of your traveler's stomach, the Standard Deviants have the video for you. Their French, Part I is a language lesson for the MTV generation. Short segments, funky graphics, and personable, youthful teachers make watching this tape entertaining, rather like Sesame Street for grownups. Using the "functional approach," making sure people can communicate and accomplish tasks in the new language, the video introduces French with phrases and full sentences, presenting ideas through demonstration. The point is to help you think in French. Dialogue is clearly transcribed on the screen, so you can see what the words look like, and two cards included with the tape give translations of some of the dialogues and useful vocabulary. Note, though, that all of the explanations are given in English, as opposed to an immersion program (meaning all in French, including explanations) such as French in Action. Which style works best is purely a matter of personal preference. Skits put the conversations into context and provide levity. Yet, as is clearly stated in the beginning of the lesson, this series is intended to be a supplement to a class, and French really needs to be practiced through speaking and writing. The benefit, though, of video is you can rewind as much as needed to master pronunciation and to let the concepts sink in. The tape opens with pronunciation, with close-ups of faces as they pronounce the alphabet to help you learn how to shape your mouth around the French letters. This is the best language tape I've ever used! It cuts a language down to the basics and uses an approach much like Sesame Street. It makes any language fun to learn.

I've been watching these tapes with a friend, having never had any French before. Yes, they do go through things fast, but I go back and review again and I haven't found that to be a problem. Yes, it's extremely corny, but it can be taken as camp and it adds a little levity in my opinion. The emphasis on pronounciation is extremely helpful, since that's the main thing a book can't do for you. You'll definitely need to supplement this with something else but it is well worth the $5.
If you're a beginner, this DVD is NOT for you........2006-03-07
If you recently decided that you would like to learn French, this DVD is not for you. They FLY through the material. Even when they want you to repeat after a presenter they still go fast! I noticed that I kept rewinding the video to try and make sense of what they just presented. It was so annoying having to rewind constantly! The beginning of the video discloses that the DVD is a supplement to classroom study. If you ask me, they need to put this disclosure (in flashing neon lights) on the cover and product description because by no means will you learn anything from this video without prior classroom experience.
In summary, if you're just starting to learn French this DVD is not for you. If you already know the French language and want to brush up on your skills, this DVD might suit you well.
I'm really glad I was able to rent this DVD (through Blockbuster Online) before I made the mistake of buying it.

I am a middle school French teacher. I have been reading the reviews for this video and had to respond. If you are a complete novice at French, do not get this video. However, if you are a student or have taken French in the past, this is a great tool to help you refresh or just to explain things a little differently. My students love watching this video. I show it in little pieces based upon what we are currently studying. They ask to watch it over and over again, even months later! I highly recommend this video as an accessory to any French program!

My wife and I teach English in China. Her freshman, oral English class is a special challenge as many students have studied but never heard English spoken.
We bought the first DVD and reviewed it before the first class. I didn't have time to look at it before arriving in China. OOPS, wish I had. Now I'm ordering all four. The first time she used it in class, her 'monitor' (student class leader) said, 'this is the most fun class'.
It's not just the DVD, my wife is a very fun person, but the DVD helped. We have a new media classroom and this is one of the best resources we use in it.

French, Part 2 picks up, not surprisingly, where the Standard Deviants' French, Part 1 leaves off. Using the same functional approach to French, this tape uses fun graphics, humorous skits, transcriptions, and translations to help you learn the language (and once again the video begins with the caveat that these videos are intended to supplement, not replace, a class). Two cards included with the tape give translations of some of the dialogues, conjugations, and useful vocabulary. Beginning with a subject near and dear to le français, we visit a café where we learn about food while also discovering le partif, prendre, and different ways of asking questions. Three more sections deal with describing yourself, shopping, and morning and evening rituals, covering topics such as irregular verbs (including décrire, vouloir, and dire), regular verbs, more adjectives and adverbs, conjugations, the past tense, direct and indirect pronouns, and reflexive verbs. Occasionally dialogues are repeated with the English translation beneath them, which seems superfluous given that the translations are provided on the enclosed cards. I have to be very motivated to write a review on anything. What motivates me here is how painful it is to watch this DVD lesson more than once. It seems to me to be high on hype and low on substance. Many so so jokes and good looking actors, but very little though in helpful repetition or anything much "beyond the basics". Too much fluff, too little substance. Also would be better to have actors who are native french speakers to learn from.

Worth getting as an adjunct only........2005-10-30
This coupled with Chemistry for Dummies and a few other Chemistry adjucts are the best bet for success in Chemistry I.
The 3 video set covers most of 1st Semester College Chemistry, and scrapes the surface of 2nd semester.
All the videos are good except...
Cons: (1) Video 1 has about 5 equations for calculating Moles, molarity, etc that are WAY too complicated. There is a simple algebraic equation to solve for all of these problems that they barely touch on (and they don't tell you that it can be applied to the following problems), and then the go into their preferred method which is pretty complicated and time consuming, but could be solved easily and quickly with the prior equation.
(2) The format is geared toward younger students and keeping your attention, so there are frequent skips, outtakes, interruptions etc... for all Standard Deviants videos. It's like watching a middle-school tv show for college students. For me, this doesn't add to my learning, but it does provide some laughs occasionally.
Overall, worth having as an ADJUNCT... it covers the basics and doesn't give you the foundation for those topics that you'll get in class and from your book.

"Intermediate" maybe, not "Advanced".......2007-07-15
I guess I was looking for more help with advanced sentence structure and verb tenses. This DVD, while helpful for some, didn't even go into the preterite much less the subjunctive. Also, I noticed numerous pronunciation errors from the non-natives, which were off-putting. Overall, entertaining and well put together but not really advanced.

This series is a little off the wall. Big deal! (in response to some other reviewers).
I have taken 4 years of spanish: 2 in HS and 2 in college (with all A's) and I still found this to be useful. There were some tips in here that really clarified some tricky topics like direct and indirect objects. I didn't mind the "mundane" parts at all. Review is always good to make sure that the student is on the same page as the instructors. Also, it gave me time to take some notes from the meatier subjects.
Overall it really is quite goofy but a good series no less!
Same Program Different Titles.......2005-12-22
Normally I would have given a 5 star rating BUT I first bought Advanced Spanish - Beyond the Basics. I liked it so much I bought Advanced Spanish - Verbs, Spanish 1&2 and ¿Habla Español?. My tape of Advanced Spanish - Verbs is IDENTICAL to Advanced Spanish - Beyong the Basics. In fact it had that as the title for the video when you view the tape. The DVD of ¿Habla Español? is IDENTICAL to the Spanish 1 tape except for some quizzes. I wrote the company with this complaint and got no answer. If you go to their site you will find about 20 Advanced Spanish DVDs that have descriptions that all appear to be the same DVD with different titles. I would definitely not buy this if you already own Advanced Spanish - Verbs. Other than this, I would be very careful buying from this company.

The term "advanced spanish" is a relative term. I would equate the level of this Lesson to a Spanish "101" to Spanish "102" college level. I would consider this more of a basics level.
Small segments of this dvd were extremely valuable........2004-04-06
Is is difficult to review this DVD because there are so few video language DVD's on the market. The valuable part of this dvd are a few troublesome area's of Spanish, such as 'direct and indirect pronouns'. I found that section to be most valuable. For example, as best I recall, they explain how to convert ' Juan escribe unas cartas a Marie y Jose', into 'Se los escribe'. These pronoun substitutions are a tricky yet prevalent part of the language.
As for the remainder of the DVD, there were alot of grammer lessons which I found a bit boring. I'm not sure what audience this dvd was written for, at times too easy. However, I did find a few sections to be useful, therefore, I would have to say that you should consider buying this dvd if you want alot of stuffy grammer lessons, or if you want to improve areas like indirect pronouns. Overall, I would recommend this dvd.

Fervently believing that a truly atrocious joke is so memorable that it's a brilliant mnemonic device, the Standard Deviants gleefully ham it up in this production while managing to make solid points about the subject matter. For instance, a presentation on a chemical principle transforms into a James Bond parody in which the protagonist, after a fight with three people playing a water molecule, reveals his name as "Bond... Covalent Bond." Ouch! A skit about proteins takes place in a beauty shop, and a truly horrendous rock singer moans about being "stuck in the middle of a cell." All this foolishness has a purpose, of course, and there is a serious curriculum hiding just beneath the unorthodox presentation. Cells, DNA, RNA, metabolism, and other concepts of biology are all covered, and a solid academic panel approved the presentation. I passed Bio because of this DVD!.......2007-06-22
Admittedly, this is not the most entertaining movie out there, but if you're watching a DVD called "Learn Biology", entertainment is not primarily what you're after, right?
I watched this movie as the base of my studying to pass a Biology placement test for my return to college. I was not looking for entertainment...I was looking for a video that would CRAM a semester's worth of general biology into my head in two weeks.
And that it did! I passed the placement test with apparently the highest score they've seen in a long time and am now heading to Anatomy & Physiology next semester. I was actually asked, "Are you already in the health or science fields? No? Then how did you get such a high score?" ***grin*** I didn't share my secret with them, but I am sharing it with you.
I watched the DVD, paused it constantly and took notes. Then I watched it again. And again. No, not the most exciting thing, but I achieved my goal of testing out of General Bio, and that was what I needed this DVD for.
I must admit that a better title for this DVD may be "Learn CELLULAR Biology" as that is all it focuses on. There is no discussion of the other aspects of Bio, like Evolution, Ecology, etc. But it does give a very thorough explanation of pretty much all facets of Cell Biology.
It's a great addition to anyone's efforts to learn biology, and I highly recommend it for its educational value!
Very Useful for Internation Student.......2006-08-31
I am planing for an MBA and need to take 2 tests, GMAT and TOEFL. As an international student, I always have problem understanding the reading comprehention passages, especially the terminology in science. I never have any experience in an English speaking classroom in my Bachelor degree. So this type of educational series is the best I ever come across. I don't need to know every single details, but I need the basic understanding of Biology.
In my opinion, this Biology DVD is better than a high school classroom in my country. Of course, it's just 1-2 hours lesson, you can't condense every bit of details. But, for it's purpose, it does an exellent job. If you need details, you can buy text book and study from it. This DVD is a supplement, not a replacement.
I used to spend hundreds of hours over 3 dictionaries and 3 encyclopedias, trying to find the passages I am reading on the GMAT, but I still understood only 35%. This DVD really helps me understand Biology much better. Sometime, you don't feel like you are studying, they use technique that keep you awakening, laughing and wondering what is next. The songs, graphic, funny stories they use fit very well together. Moreover, you can imagine spending hours reading text that explain the cell cycle, but you can watch this DVD for minutes and get the same understanding of the process in much shorter time. This is a fun way to learn some topics in biology. The visual technique is excellent for helping me to memorize important topics into my brain. It's a good reference for AP Biology. This is a MUST for anyone who is struggling to pass a Bio test. I can tell you it was a deciding factor allowing me to pass my Bio Clep test last month. It is supremely entertaining and covers key areas. I found that its focus on DNA and RNA were particularly key for questions I later encountered on the test. Great Intro & Basics.......2006-12-24
Woah! For someone like me, who didn't even finish precal in high school, calculus can seem rather daunting. I've purchased quite a bit of learning materials to freshen up on math (a dozen books easily), and these DVDs have been one of the best tools at getting me up to where I want to be.
That squiggly integration sign always scared the crud outta me, but no more! These DVDs went through all the foundation material and by the time they discussed indefinite and definite integrals ... it was a breeze! Seriously! I now laugh at integration problems - well, the simple stuff anyways. :-)
At times it can be a little hokey, but none of that matters in the least if they're able to educate you and communicate concepts - and in my opinion, they are very capable. It doesn't get into the more advanced topics, but with the foundation the DVDs provide you're all set to explore those topics on your own. As another reviewer said, it doesn't cover "calculus 2" as it may possibly seem, but rather it includes both parts 1 and 2 of their calculus series.

But i think for what it tries to do, it does an excellent job. No, it isnt going to cover a full years worth of calculus, and they make it quite clear that this product AUGMENTS a calculus class, not replaces it. It presents calculus in a different format that helped some things to click better than just seeing it in a book form.

They try to do a good job but everything is so watered down that it didn't help me that much. The course is funny though, and that is good. Oh and like another reviewer said...the title of the course is VERY MISLEADING. There are no Calculus 2 topics in this DVD set. It is all calculus 1.

The DVD's are very helpfull and well done. I highly reccommend them, however, the title Calculus I and II is misleading as these DVD's only cover Calculus I, and therefore should be labeled Calculus I.
Good presentation of the basics of calculus........2005-09-05
I really enjoyed the DVD pack. The two DVD's covered the early sections of most chapters in a typical Calculus I textbook. There wasn't any depth to the covered concepts or presentation of difficult topics like three-dimensional slicing, but it was a great introduction to elementary concepts covered during a typical college-level Calculus I course. I highly recommend the DVD pack for any student preparing to take calculus, and as a tutorial for students already enrolled in calculus. High school students taking calculus would especially benefit from the presentation methods.

The intrepid Standard Deviants, a troupe of young performers unafraid to shamelessly ham it up in the cause of making difficult academic subjects memorable, turn their attention to "The Pumped Up World of Pre-Algebra" in this DVD. Using lots of examples and flashy computer graphics to illustrate them, the cast jumps into the basics by answering the question "What is an integer exponent?" The rules of exponents are explained, and these initial segments are followed with a review. The basic format is followed throughout, with the concepts of prime factorization, roots, fractional exponents, and inequalities being covered with a variety of techniques, including some skits and jokes bad enough to serve as brilliant mnemonic devices. This subject matter doesn't sound like anything fun, but the cast does its best to explain things thoroughly, and the high production values make the content visually appealing on the screen. The DVD format lends itself to a feature that presents what are essentially on-screen flashcards showing formulas, and a "Pumped Up Exam" can also be administered, with the viewer answering by using the buttons on the DVD player's remote control. New Math Made Simple.......2001-06-21
As with all of the Standard Deviants educational series, the presentation is zany, and what you need to know is simply explained. It holds your interest so you don't get bored with the dry subject matter.
To compare DVD format to regular video, the DVD has much more versatility because of its interactive testing capabilities. The viewer has an option to test and review the subject matter by using the remote keypad. These little tests are helpful for making sure you understand the points covered.
The Pre-Algebra DVD covers math terminology, explaining each term so that it's easy-to-understand. Then they show you how it works. It takes the mystery out of math terms that intimidate all of us who didn't learn the "new math" during our school years. By viewing this DVD, I experienced a personal breakthrough in my struggle to learn the "new math". It was a tremendous help to me. I highly recommend it to others who struggle with this subject, especially parents and grandparents who found themselves unable to understand their kid's math homework. This subject brings it together for us so we can understand what our kids are learning.
