Screenwriter William Goldman's novel The Princess Bride earned its own loyal audience on the strength of its narrative voice and its gently satirical, hyperbolic spin on swashbuckled adventure that seemed almost purely literary. For all its derring-do and vivid over-the-top characters, the book's joy was dictated as much by the deadpan tone of its narrator and a winking acknowledgement of the clichés being sent up. Miraculously, director Rob Reiner and Goldman himself managed to visualize this romantic fable while keeping that external voice largely intact: using a storytelling framework, avuncular Grandpa (Peter Falk) gradually seduces his skeptical grandson (Fred Savage) into the absurd, irresistible melodrama of the title story.
And what a story: a lowly stable boy, Westley (Cary Elwes), pledges his love to the beautiful Buttercup (Robin Wright), only to be abducted and reportedly killed by pirates while Buttercup is betrothed to the evil Prince Humperdinck. Even as Buttercup herself is kidnapped by a giant, a scheming criminal mastermind, and a master Spanish swordsman, a mysterious masked pirate (could it be Westley?) follows in pursuit. As they sail toward the Cliffs of Insanity...
The wild and woolly arcs of the story, the sudden twists of fate, and, above all, the cartoon-scaled characters all work because of Goldman's very funny script, Reiner's confident direction, and a terrific cast. Elwes and Wright, both sporting their best English accents, juggle romantic fervor and physical slapstick effortlessly, while supporting roles boast Mandy Patinkin (the swordsman Inigo Montoya), Wallace Shawn (the incredulous schemer Vizzini), and Christopher Guest (evil Count Rugen) with brief but funny cameos from Billy Crystal, Carol Kane, and Peter Cook. --Sam Sutherland
Customer Reviews:
One of the best movies ever made, with a decent DVD treatment..........2007-09-05
It is no exaggeration to call "The Princess Bride" one of the best movies ever made. Even though it was made on what would be considered a small budget, and had no big name actors, it became a perennial classic of young and old alike since its initial release in 1987. The first time I saw "Bride" I was four years old(1989), and ever since then it has remained one of my favorite movies of all time. It never gets boring or unfunny as many times as you view it, and I have seen it 300+ times. So, the question remains, "What makes this such a special movie?"
William Goldman wrote the screenplay in 1973, and it took 14 years to get the movie off the ground, and this movie is worth the work that it took to get it made. From beginning to end there is no boring parts. Some of the most quoted lines of all time "My name is Inigo Mantoya, you killed my father, prepare to die!" and "Love, twue love." Remain overused by people who may have never even seen the film.
There is an endearing innocence which this film portrays, that true love can and will conquer all. That real love is pure, honest, and beautiful. It is not a deep movie, but it does portray big feelings and honest emotions in all of its characters, as bizzare as some of them may be. There are no wasted lines, no filler, just pure fun.
These are the things that have made this movie stand the test of time. It can, and always will be a great film because of its carefree and fun attitude, and emotional honesty towards its most unsympathetic characters (Prince Humperdink). It doesn't try to be a great movie, but it is. It is as William Goldman says in his commentary on this disc (not verbatum), that you do not know when a movie will be a hit, there is no formula, you just have to release it and see if people like it or not... And they do! :D
I cannot say that one DVD edition is better than any other for this movie, it is up to you to decide which one you would like to purchase; either way, the movie is the centerpiece, and the rest is really just excess.
God Bless & *ENJOY* ~Amy
All time great.......2007-09-01
I was always thrown off by the title, I assumed it was a chick flick. After seeing it, it's one of my favorites.
This Film Is A Joy.......2007-08-28
When the great William Goldman wrote the screenplay for Rob Reiner's 1987 film version of his own 1973 novel, The Princess Bride, Goldman actually outdid his own original work that was itself virtually flawless!
This is a perfectly cast production filled start to finish with great lines, wonderful scenes, unforgettable characters, and moments that are fun to watch over and over. It's also a romantic tale brimming with castles, dungeons, a cheek pinching grandpa, a beautiful maiden, dashing heroes, swordfights, torture, treachery, piracy on the high seas, magic, miracles, revenge, rodents of unusual size, and True Love. It's been one of my favorite movies since I first saw it on the big screen as a child, and I'll probably still be in love with this story when I'm old and gray.
I have not one bad thing to say about this enchanting movie.
No, not one.
This is not a chick flick.......2007-08-27
It's not a chick flick. It has: a Giant, an albino, swordsmen, sword fights, fist fights, chase scenes, fire, explosions... I don't know. It's a fun, entertaining movie to watch... for men and women.
Not just a "kissing movie"..........2007-08-25
One of the most entertaining movies to come out of Hollywood, "The Princess Bride" has the rare capacity to make you laugh harder with each viewing. And I have viewed it dozens of times. It translates across generations and languages. The DVD ups the entertainment factor with interviews with the ensemble cast, Rob Reiner, and William Goldman (the author of the book upon which the movie is based.) I was especially touched by the moving tributes to the late Andre (the Giant) Roussimoff.
I have owned this movie as a VHS tape since it was introduced. It has finally worn out, so naturally, I had to buy the DVD. What a joy!
If you haven't seen the movie, buy it now. You won't regret it. The world is full of Princess bride fans. How else will you know how to respond when they say, "Hallo, my name is Inigo Montoya, you killed my father, prepare to die!"

Adapted from a Will Weaver story, Ali Selim's Sweet Land is a truly sweet story about unlikely immigrant lovers whose struggle for integration into 1920's America earns them a work ethic more American than many of their narrow-minded neighbors. Set in rural Minnesota, the sentimental film focuses on tribulations that Scandinavian settlers experienced, with a cinematic serenity reminiscent of Terrence Malik's Days of Heaven. Norwegian farmer Olaf Torvik (Tim Guinee) invites a non-English speaking German siren, Inge Alltenburg (Elizabeth Reaser), to relocate and marry him, but discovers that neither the town's Lutheran pastor (John Heard) nor the local judge will marry a German into their community for fear of wartime German spies. Inge finds friendship in neighbors Frandsen (Alan Cumming) and his wife, Brownie (Alex Kingston), who disregarding local gossip, welcome her into their home. Finally, Inge proves herself, settling in so that Sweet Land's historical narrative is framed by Inge, fifty years later, speaking to her adult son about her husband's death and their plot of land. This multi-generational tale of social acceptance and land ownership is ultimately the story of America, though the regional specificity of Sweet Land will speak especially to those familiar with Midwestern culture. --Trinie Dalton
Description
Inge (Elizabeth Reaser) is a feisty German mail-order bride who has come to Minnesota to marry Olaf (Tim Guinee), a young Norwegian immigrant farmer of few words. But in a post-WWI, anti-German climate, the local minister (John Heard) openly forbids the marriage. Inge and Olaf fall in love despite the town's disapproval. But when the town banker (Ned Beatty) attempts to foreclose on the farm of his friend Frandsen (Alan Cumming), Olaf takes a stand...and the community unites around the young couple, finally accepting Inge as one of their own.

Great love story!.......2007-09-06
This movie was beautifully written, directed and acted. I was very impressed with the soundtrack as well. Though the movie is not action packed, it is filled with well developed characters and interesting plot turns. The gradual love story that builds through the entire film is entertaining right up to the end. I would highly recommend this movie!
Sweet Land - sweet movie.......2007-08-25
Our family thoroughly enjoyed the steady, quiet, loving pace of this movie. There are many issues of acceptance, faith, and determination that are woven into the story. It is beautifully filmed and we loved the characters. We highly recommend this movie for just about anyone.
Hypnotically Quiet, but No Less Passionate. .......2007-08-24
"Sweet Land" is an unusual love story set among homesteading immigrants in Minnesota farm country shortly after World War I. Olaf Torvik (Tim Guinee) came to the US from Norway in 1910, moved west, cleared some land, and became a farmer. A decade later, his parents in Norway find him a wife. Inge Allenberg (Elizabeth Reaser) arrives by train with 2 suitcases and her indispensable phonograph. But Inge is a German national. Post-war sentiment toward Germans prevent the minister and judge from marrying the couple. Olaf is frustrated by the situation, but Inge is determined to be his wife.
"Sweet Land" director Ali Selim adapted the film from Will Weaver's short story "A Gravestone Made of Wheat". The story of Inge and Olaf provides an window on an American culture rarely seen in film. The farms' placid beauty defies the harsh realities of eking out a living in this fickle environment. I was entranced by the quietness that results from Olaf's laconic nature and Inge's inability to speak English. The actors do a splendid job of conveying Inge's resolve and Olaf's frustrated longing and fear of this stranger with few words. "Sweet Land"'s framing device is awkward, but it does give the story context and leaves the audience satisfied to know how things turned out.
The DVD (20th Century Fox 2007): There is one featurette, a theatrical trailer (2 ½ min), and an audio commentary. "Sweet Land: A Labor of Love Story" (11 min) interviews director Ali Selim about his intentions and talks with the cast about their characters and themes. The audio commentary is by writer/director Ali Selim, actors Tim Guinee and Elizabeth Reaser, editor James Stanger, and producer Gil Bellows. Selim and Stanger discuss the framing device. Selim talks about adapting the story. Also discussed are locations, the score, performances, shooting anecdotes, and the actors share their experiences. Subtitles for the film are available in English, Spanish, and French.
A Smart and Enjoyable Film.......2007-08-13
Sweet Land is a film which is enjoyable time after time for the nuances of the writing, the acting and the beautiful cinematography. Because of the focus of the film on immigrant brides, and the reality of the language barriers, my second viewing was like seeing a sequel. The actors brought real depth to the subject matter and I especially appreciated the development of the relationships in the community. A great film for the whole family.
Moving, poignant, timely, and a keeper.......2007-08-12
A friend recommended we see this movie so we drove 90 miles to the nearest theatre to view this independant flick. Wow! Now, we have the video and are every bit as impressed. Filmed on location in the vicinity of Montevideo, MN Sweetland exudes a rare authenticity that simply grips the heart and soul. Pastoral settings, migrating geese flying by, the harvest the old fashioned way...it's all there, with great magnificence and integrity. We tend to forget life tensions around 1920, emigration pressures, foreign language miscommunications, ostracism, hard work, the influence of the church and minister...While you're immersed in the story it suddenly hits you that certain contempory issues also echo within this unfolding drama. How many films have you seen lately that are bold enough to go a full ten minutes before the main title comes to view? It's 1 hour 50 minutes long. The ten minute behind the scenes feature reveals what inspired the writer and the director, adding additional dimensions to the moving story. We haven't yet taken in the audio commentary, that'll be next. Buy it, watch it, show it to your kids. Keep your hankies close, it'll tug powerfully at your heart, especially so if you have roots in the great midwest. You'll find why the land can be sweeter than money.

Writer/director Ol Parker's debut takes its title from "Happy Together" by the Turtles ("Imagine me and you / and you and me") and its inspiration from the romantic comedies of Richard Curtis (Love Actually). There's a twist. Flower shop owner Luce (Lena Headey, The Brothers Grimm) is gay. Newlywed Rachel (a convincingly UK-accented Piper Perabo, Lost and Delirious) is straight. The two meet at Rachel's wedding--Luce designed the floral arrangements--and feel an instant connection. Rachel brushes it off. After all, the charming Heck (Matthew Goode, Match Point) was her best friend long before he became her husband. Shortly after the ceremony, however, she begins to feel as if something is missing. She starts making excuses to see Luce. First it's to thank her for the flowers, then it's to invite her to dinner with Heck and their on-the-make pal Cooper (a hilarious Darren Boyd)...who's crushed when he discovers that Luce prefers women. Rachel, meanwhile, finds married life pleasant enough, but only really feels alive when she's with Luce. It's tricky, because she loves Heck and doesn't want to hurt his feelings, so she and Luce decide to stop seeing each other. But the bond between the two is too powerful for either to resist. What it may lack in originality, Imagine Me & You makes up for in an enchanting soundtrack and sensitive performances from its three likable leads. --Kathleen C. Fennessy
Description
Piper Perabo lights up the screen as Rachel, a blushing bride whose perfect nuptials take a surprising turn at the altar. An innocent glance between Rachel and an unexpected wedding guest is all it takes to spark a 'love at first sight' romance with a surprising twist -- the object of Rachel's affection is a smart and sensuous... woman! Their shocking romance causes quite a stir amongst her family and friends as Rachel is forced to choose between her husband and the girl of her dreams. Say 'I do' to the wonderfully witty film that Cosmopolitan calls "a refreshing romantic comedy."

Imagine - A Great Movie.......2007-09-04
I really could watch this film over and over. That is why I purchased it. It is my second favorite movie of this genre. It is sweet and beautiful.
Sensitive and Humorous Film about a Controversial Subject.......2007-09-02
"Imagine Me and You" is a fine film about a controversial subject (i.e. lesbianism) with gentle and humorous performances by the entire cast of performers.
The lead actresses (Piper Perabo and Lena Heady) gave credible and sensitive performances without becoming advocates for a particular position in the debate about human sexuality.
The story relates that true love can happen between two individuals of the same gender without sensationalizing the experience.
Truly, a touching and humanizing film that I recommend for ages 17 and over.
Very Cute.......2007-09-01
Thoroughly enjoyed this movie. Mind you, it's not terribly taxing on the brain, but I felt it was pretty well done and covered a topic that is more common than thought. If only life ended the way this movie does! Definitely recommend it for the gay/lesbian collection in your home. Then again, one of my favorite movies is "It's In the Water" so....
Best thing about this film is Matthew Goode.......2007-08-26
I loved "kissing jessica stein" and so i figured i'd give this a go. Well, no! Piper Perabo just isn't a good actress. I mean she tries and you can tell, but she just stinks! She pouts the entire way through the film and is put in obsurd situations, the only time she doesn't pout to convey the point 'she's truly found herself' is at the very end! Save your money and time and rent "Kissing Jessica Stein" or "Lost and Delirious" which she did when she was 12 and was to young for us to see how rubbish she really is!
Great Movie.......2007-08-16
This was a nice British comedy with a few out of the normal twist and turns.

This '90s update of the Spencer Tracy-Elizabeth Taylor hit is a mix of the pleasant and the silly, a nice enough movie but a little too controlled to become particularly interesting. Steve Martin plays the aging patriarch who is threatened by his daughter's engagement and not-quite-willing to let her go. The writing-directing team of Charles Shyer and Nancy Meyers provides Martin's character with a perhaps too-broad range of comic responsiveness to the situation, some of it gentle (a ritual game of basketball between dad and his little girl) and some of it slapstick (Martin sneaking around his prospective in-laws' house and encountering a guard dog). Martin Short turns up as a wedding coordinator--which has deliriously delicious possibilities--but his inventiveness doesn't quite strike the chord this time. --Tom Keogh
Description
You're invited to celebrate with this funnier-than-ever 15th Anniversary Special Edition of a timeless comedy. Steve Martin delivers a winning performance as George Banks, the befuddled father who has a hard time letting go of his young daughter (Kimberly Williams) when she unexpectedly announces her plans to wed. The "I do's" and don'ts of her big day prove no small feat for George as he runs into an off-the-wall wedding planner (funnyman Martin Short), his patient, level-headed wife (Diane Keaton), and hysterical hitches. You won't want to miss the never-before-seen bonus features, including behind-the-scenes interviews, commentary, and the Steve Martin & Martin Short interview -- now available to have and to hold forever!

Steve Martin in one of his most memorable roles as "father of the bride". From the beginning to the end this movie is amusing and entertaining. All characters are well cast and act out a Hollywood version of what a wedding could be like. Martin Short is hilarious in his role as "Fronk", the wedding coordinator.

Quentin Tarantino's Kill Bill, Vol. 1 is trash for connoisseurs. From his opening gambit (including a "Shaw-Scope" logo and gaudy '70s-vintage "Our Feature Presentation" title card) to his cliffhanger finale (a teasing lead-in to 2004's Vol. 2), Tarantino pays loving tribute to grindhouse cinema, specifically the Hong Kong action flicks and spaghetti Westerns that fill his fervent brain--and this frequently breathtaking movie--with enough cinematic references and cleverly pilfered soundtrack cues to send cinephiles running for their reference books. Everything old is new again in Tarantino's humor-laced vision: he steals from the best while injecting his own oft-copied, never-duplicated style into what is, quite simply, a revenge flick, beginning with the near-murder of the Bride (Uma Thurman), pregnant on her wedding day and left for dead by the Deadly Viper Assassination Squad (or DiVAS)--including Lucy Liu and the unseen David Carradine (as Bill)--who become targets for the Bride's lethal vengeance. Culminating in an ultraviolent, ultra-stylized tour-de-force showdown, Tarantino's fourth film is either brilliantly (and brutally) innovative or one of the most blatant acts of plagiarism ever conceived. Either way, it's hyperkinetic eye-candy from a passionate film-lover who clearly knows what he's doing. --Jeff Shannon
Description
The acclaimed fourth film from groundbreaking writer and director Quentin Tarantino (PULP FICTION, JACKIE BROWN), KILL BILL VOLUME 1 stars Uma Thurman (PULP FICTION), Lucy Liu (CHARLIE'S ANGELS, CHICAGO), and Vivica A. Fox (TWO CAN PLAY THAT GAME) in an astonishing, action-packed thriller about brutal betrayal and an epic vendetta! Four years after taking a bullet in the head at her own wedding, The Bride (Thurman) emerges from a coma and decides it's time for payback ... with a vengeance! Having been gunned down by her former boss (David Carradine) and his deadly squad of international assassins, it's a kill-or-be-killed fight she didn't start but is determined to finish! Loaded with explosive action and outrageous humor, it's a must-see motion picture event that has critics everywhere raving!
Customer Reviews:
Quentin Tarantino...Uma Thurman...Masterpiece?.......2007-09-07
This is a great movie. Uma Thurman as the Bride is one of my favorite characters.
Revenge at its best.......2007-09-04
Quentin Tarantino has made a career of writing and directing fantastic films, and with the first volume of the Kill Bill duet the tradition continues. On the surface, Kill Bill: Volume 1 spins like an above average revenge flick - an ex-assassin known only as "The Bride" is brutally tortured on her wedding day by her former employer's lethal band of contract killers: the Deadly Viper Assassination Squad. The `blood-splattered bride' is left for dead on the church floor, but her wounds eventually heal and four years later she begins her personal quest for revenge. Plot points such as these, however, are not what make Kill Bill (or any Tarantino film for that matter) special.
From the first grizzly minute all the way to the credits, every shot, every character, every line of dialogue, and every aspect of the story is driven by Tarantino's love for Hong Kong martial arts films, samurai movies, spaghetti westerns, and revenge flicks. These influences can be seen everywhere - from the camera framing copied from The Good, The Bad and the Ugly, to the final battle at the House of Blue Leaves where The Bride wears a yellow catsuit very much like the one worn by Bruce Lee in Game of Death. Tarantino uses references such as these to give Kill Bill: Volume 1 a cinematic depth that most revenge films can't match.
Quentin Tarantino dropped out of school at the tender age of 16 to pursue acting. However, he developed his love of film while working at a video rental shop in California. Since then, Tarantino has directed a total of five films, written eight, and won an Oscar (for Pulp Fiction). His love of film bleeds through every frame of every movie he is directly linked to - as evident by his use of homage as a film style. Pulp Fiction paid tribute to (among other things) gangster movies. In Reservoir Dogs, it was heist films and undercover cop stories. And in Kill Bill it was revenge, samurai showdowns, and old Westerns.
One of the strongest aspects of Kill Bill is that Tarantino embraced the simple mentality of typical revenge flicks while, at the same time, generously applying his own spirit. By default, movies that deal with reprisals tend to be a little bit shallow and predictable - someone has to kill or harm someone else for some wrongdoing.
What sets Kill Bill apart is the dialogue. For the film's entire 111 minute running time, the story is unfurled using dialogue that is packed with black comedy, old Asian legends, pop culture references, and extraordinary bravado. For example, when The Bride awakens in a hospital bed four years after the massacre, she learns that when she was comatose the head hospital attendant was acting as her pimp - selling her for $50 a "session." While this might have otherwise come across as a totally revolting and extremely dire situation, the dialogue and characters involved turn the scene into black comedy gold by playing off of the hick stereotype associated with many small Texas towns.
Another example of where the dialogue shines is when The Bride travels to the tiny island of Okinawa, Japan to meet with the legendary sword smith Hattori Hanzo. The nature of the film changes dramatically (for the better) as Hanzo passes on ancient Samurai proverbs to aid The Bride in her fight. This scene sets up a more purposeful tone for the remainder of the film and might contain the most powerful lines in the entire movie. Before giving the `yellow-haired warrior' (The Bride) his powerful `Hanzo Steel' samurai blade, Hattori effectively sums up the entire idea of vengeance by saying that revenge is "never a straight line. It's a forest, and like a forest it's easy to lose your way." This is the type of dialogue that sets Kill Bill apart. The ideas behind it are not new, but they are executed in such a way that they come off as fresh, funky, and unique.
The only downfall of Kill Bill: Volume 1 is the way it was released. Originally, Tarantino wrote and directed the project as one film. However, due to its four-hour plus running time, the Miramax production company decided to split it into two `volumes.' Due to this separation, the first volume comes across as light on story and heavy on violence while the second part seems light on action and heavy on plot exploration. The difference is especially noticeable in Kill Bill: Volume 2, which contains only two major fight sequences. The lack of closure at the end of Volume 1, due to Miramax's attempt to sell multiple tickets to the same movie, must be listed as a flaw of Tarantino's (otherwise) brilliant project.
Kill Bill is an experience. It pulls ideas from many different cultures, movies, genres, legends, and old television shows, and packages them together in one super-fine blood-soaked escapade. The only problem is that it's not one escapade (as it was originally meant to be) - it's two. Splitting the film causes a jarring shift in tone that's difficult to ignore. The best solution is to watch both DVDs back-to-back, thus eliminating what might be the only problem with one of the best films of the past decade.
Truly AMAZING!.......2007-08-16
Kill Bill is utterly enjoyable in all ways. It has the most clever dialouge, has the best directer in existence, and is quite humorous yet sophisticated. This movie is pure LOVE!
Hugely Disappointing.......2007-07-31
Mr Tarantino should have used lightsabers - it would have made the movie far more believable. Also, Uma Thurman's character should have been played by Nicholas Cage.
Verdict:
Avoid
A modern day classic........2007-07-19
Powerful films are hard to come by these days. But when Quentin Tarantino is directing something, you know it's special. Kill Bill is a revenge movie, done in a grindhouse kind of style. It's Tarantino's first action film, but don't worry, his dialogue is as cool as ever. Featuring neat music, humorous scenes, and silly unrealistic violence, Kill Bill is a fun experience. I hope you enjoy it!

The exotic sounds, vibrant colors, and ecstatic dancing of Bollywood collide with the cunning storytelling of Jane Austen in Bride & Prejudice (from the writer/director of previous East/West hybrid Bend It Like Beckham). When smart, outspoken Lalita Bakshi (Indian beauty Aishwarya Rai) meets Will Darcy (Martin Henderson, The Ring), she finds this American businessman arrogant and conceited--but because his best friend is falling in love with her sister, Lalita agrees to travel around India with Darcy. On the trip, a childhood friend of Darcy's named Johnny (Daniel Gillies, Spider-Man 2) both tickles Lalita's fancy and confirms her worst suspicions about Darcy. But as events unfold, Lalita wonders if she hasn't misjudged Darcy--and Johnny. Austen fans will be find much to criticize; Bride & Prejudice transplants the basic plot of Pride & Prejudice to modern India, but not much of Austen's sly wit or her insights about character and society have survived the translation. Henderson, though handsome, lacks the intimidating charisma of previous Mr. Darcys (including Laurence Olivier and Colin Firth). Thank goodness for the delightful Rai, here making her first all-English-language movie. She commands the screen like a true star (unsurprisingly, she's hugely popular in India, and previously starred in a more homegrown Austen adaptation: I Have Found It, based on Sense & Sensibility). For Western audiences unfamiliar with the freewheeling exuberance of Indian movies--wild musical numbers can break out at almost any moment--Bride & Prejudice offers an engaging taste of this fantastic cinematic style. --Bret Fetzer
Description
A clash of cultures in the spirit of MY BIG FAT GREEK WEDDING, this modern musical retelling of Jane Austen's classic PRIDE AND PREJUDICE is a hilariously entertaining tale of one girl's unlikely search for love! Sparks immediately fly as a love/hate relationship ignites between a small-town beauty (international star Aishwarya Rai) and a wealthy American (Martin Henderson -- THE RING, TORQUE) who's visiting her modest Indian village. In a swirl of music, dance, and comic misunderstandings, these opposites continue to attract and repel each other in a riotous romance that spans three continents! Featuring Naveen Andrews (TV's LOST, THE ENGLISH PATIENT) and a memorable performance from top recording artist Ashanti -- love will eventually conquer all in this acclaimed treat from the director of BEND IT LIKE BECKHAM!
Customer Reviews:
Very Bollywood!.......2007-09-10
This was cute, just plain cute and very Bollywood! My daughter recommended it. I did not think I would like it but I did although a few of the numbers were a bit long. If you don't like musicals, you will not like this movie.
I love Austen, which is why I was leary of watching it, but I am glad I did. It was enjoyable. Not excellent, but good.
The stars were great especially Naveen Andrews and Aishwarya Rai (Ash). She is also stunning.
If you are looking for a fun, relaxing watch, with a few good laughs, this is a movie to see. I think Ms. Austen would really enjoy this.
a fresh twist on a favorite classic.......2007-09-08
A free-spirited young woman meets a man who, while rich and handsome, initially seems cold and uncommonly rude. After an ironic series of events involving the woman's comically frustrating family and many misunderstandings, she comes to realize that the unfeeling young man is truly a gentleman with a heart of gold.
If this story sounds familiar, it probably is. Remade many times in movie, television, and book form, Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice is one of literature and film's most classic love stories. It may seem, then, that one more turn of this tale would only drive the story further into the ground. But throw in some spicy Bollywood song and dance and it takes new life in the form of the lively film Bride and Prejudice.
In this colorful and upbeat musical, an American man named Will Darcy (Martin Henderson) travels to India with a friend and unexpectedly meets his match in independent Lalita Bakshi (Bollywood superstar Aishwarya Rai). Although initially wary of the foreign Indian culture, Will is soon drawn to Lalita's easy charm and zest for life. He must convince Lalita and her outrageous family, however, that his veneer of snobbery is not who he truly is in order to win her heart.
While the Bollywood style of film may be unfamiliar to most Americans, the movie boasts several international stars, including director Gurinder Chadha, most recognizable to western moviegoers for her earlier film, Bend It Like Beckham. Rai also is no stranger to the big screen. Known by many as the "queen of Bollywood" and often renowned as "the most beautiful woman in the world," the former Miss World is one of India's most celebrated actresses.
Some of the movie's finest moments come in the form of musical numbers. Using popular Indian dance and song styles, the film includes several tunes that will keep viewers humming long after the credits have rolled. An additional strength is the brilliant styling and artistry of the film. Bright, eye-popping colors transport the audience to the world of the movie and make the film a visual treat.
Unfortunately, while the movie excels in artistic quality, it lacks in some acting skills. Henderson's Darcy is fairly lackluster, and Alexis Bledel's turn as his younger sister Georgie makes the viewer wonder if lack of personality runs in the family. A gratuitous music video-esque performance by singer Ashanti chops up the flow of the plot and seems out of place in the middle of the film.
At its core, though, Bride and Prejudice is a fresh spin on a timeless classic. Rai and several others keep the action lively and fun, and Lalita's ridiculous family makes for sincere laughs throughout. It takes a strong talent to turn a redundant plot into an enjoyable cinematic ride, but Bride and Prejudice does both Jane Austen and modern audiences proud.
A Fun and Colorful film.......2007-08-22
If you like the book/movie Pride and Prejudice, then you probably would like this film. It is the Indian musical version of the orginal. The actors are handsome (especially Naveen Andrews) and the actresses are beautiful. The colors of the costumes bring out a warm welcome. You can sing along with family and friends to have a good time or by yourself. A good movie to have in anyone's collection. The soundtrack is great as well.
Remains True to Basic Ideas and Characters.......2007-08-12
This updated Bollywood rendition of Jane Austen's classic tale Pride and Prejudice was full of colour, scenery, romance, humour and lots of beautiful people. It did well in trying to remain true to the basic ideas and characters of Austen's book in an fun and entertaining manner. If you like musicals or are a Jane Austen fan with an open mind you'll love this. I'm a great fan of Austen-related movies and would definitely watch this one again. FYI: I had a great shocker when I saw LOST's Sayid (Naveen Andrews), in the roll of Darcy's best friend, dance in sing in the opening!
Without a doubt, this movie is awesome!.......2007-08-08
I just love Bride and Predjudice. The music, and the movie, are so colorful and upbeat. Bollywood films and music are so refreshing and entertaining. I just had to buy the cd after seeing this movie several times.

Well, bless my beautiful hide! Director Stanley Donen invests this rollicking musical with a hearty exuberance. Howard Keel, with his big-as-all-outdoors baritone, stars as a bold "mountain man" living in the Oregon woods who brings home a bride (plucky songbird soprano Jane Powell) to his six slovenly brothers. Taming the rambunctious brood, Jane proceeds to make gentlemen of them so they can woo sweethearts of their own. But old habits die hard: their flirting gives way to fighting in the film's celebrated barn-raising scene, a lively acrobatic dance number exuberantly choreographed by Michael Kidd. Big brother chimes in with his own brand of advice--an old-fashioned kidnapping! Donen manages to get away with such a politically incorrect plot by investing the boys with a innocent sweetness, most notably the youngest brother played with genial earnestness by Rusty (Russ) Tamblyn (pre-West Side Story). This modest production became a huge hit and remains one of MGM's best-loved musical comedies, an energetic, high-kicking classic. --Sean Axmaker
Description
Howard Keel and Jane Powell are rapturous newlyweds who tame his six rowdy bachelor brothers in the wild Oregon backwoods in this Best Score Academy Award(R)-winning song-and-dance-filled comedy.

7 Brides for 7 Brothers.......2007-08-23
I have been looking for this movie. I am a senior citizen and some movies I loved when I was younger you can't find. At Amazon most of time you can find the "oldies but goodies". I have never been disappointed in the products I have purchased from Amazon.
Classic musical love story.......2007-07-27
I have loved this movie for years. My two daughters in their early 20's love it, too. I'd had it on VHS and I was late getting my DVD to add to my movie collection. This was a MUST HAVE. I enjoy watching it each time as much as the first. Love it, love it.

Everybody important from the first film, including the writing-directing team of Charles Shyer and Nancy Meyers, regroups for this sequel involving a pair of pregnancies. Steve Martin's patriarch has a crisis when his married daughter (Kimberly Williams) is with child, and an even bigger one when his middle-aged wife (Diane Keaton) announces that another bambino is on the way. Martin Short is more effectively used this time around (he played the wedding coordinator in the first film), and while this movie's inevitable climax has both women giving birth on the same chaotic night, the overall effect of the film is less contrived than its predecessor. --Tom Keogh
Description
Expect crowd-pleasing entertainment when Steve Martin (PARENTHOOD), Diane Keaton (LOOK WHO'S TALKING NOW), and Martin Short (CAPTAIN RON) return in this hilarious sequel to the comedy smash FATHER OF THE BRIDE. Having just married off his cherished daughter (Kimberly Williams -- FATHER OF THE BRIDE), George Banks (Martin) is ready to get footloose and fancy free! So when his daughter and his wife Nina (Keaton) both announce they are pregnant, George finds himself in one outrageous situation after another, desperately trying to recapture the wild and crazy days of his youth! You'll love every star-filled minute of FATHER OF THE BRIDE, PART II -- the riotous comedy hit that delivers double the fun and twice the laughs!
Customer Reviews:
Great.......2007-06-10
This is one of the best sequels I have ever seen. It is funny and at the same time very sweet and touching. Steve Martin is great as the unwilling soon-to-be-father/grandfather. The rest of the cast is as good as they were in the first part. Definitely worth a watch by all daughters who have a very loving and protective father!
Is Great!.......2007-04-10
I really like the 2 won better but the other one you need to see first!
The first one is much better..........2006-10-12
I was very disappointed in this movie. As much as I love Steve Martin, this movie just didn't do anything for me. I had to make myself watch it in its entirety. It was too unrealistic; a mother and daughter being pregnant at the same time, giving birth on the same exact day, in the same hospital across the hall from one another. Give me a break. And what are the chances of you buying your house back one day after you sell it by just one stoke of a pen by simply reaching into your pocket and whipping out a $100,000 check? Yeah, I see that happen all the time. And gee whiz, Annie's husband walks into the hospital after a business trip in Tokyo just in the nick of time, how convenient. And is it too much to ask to have just one movie where the pregnant woman gets a normal ride to the hospital? The wild ride to the hospital scene is played (Look Who's Talking?, Nine Months). And just what kind of job did the father of the bride have? A baby suite? How fortunate we all would be if we could toss thousands of dollars on a single room in a house that's only going to be used for a couple of months. Now that's what I call living! And Franck, not only does he coordinate weddings but he throws in baby showers here and there as well. Oh, and he also designs baby suites. Maybe he does barmitzvahs too. This movie would have been a lot better if it only focused on Annie being pregnant. The Banks having 3 children spread out across 3 different generations was a bit much. "Is that your grandbaby?" "No, that's my daughter." "Hey, is that your sister?" "No, that's my aunt." "Hey, it was nice meeting your brother." "Are you kidding me, that's my nephew!" There were no funny moments in this movie and seeing Steve Martin as a brunette, even if it was only briefly, was just painful. His hair has been gray ever since I can remember and he should keep it that way at all times. Do yourself a favor and pass on this movie. The first one is much better. If I could have given it a zero star I would have. Sorry Steve, I still love you but the next time I want to see you in a good movie, I'll just pull out "The Jerk","Parenthood" or "Housesitter". As a matter of fact, I'm planning to take this movie to the Thrift store the next time I donate.
Narrow View of Normal.......2006-09-18
What's wrong with raising a baby in a beach house? Am I the only person who doesn't live in a mansion? Do you have to be rich to be happy?
This movie, and the original remake (since that's what these films are) tell a lot of lies about what people should expect life to be. Therefore, they are not fun. All the humor evaporates when you realize it is attempting to tell you "your life should be this way" or you're wrong if it is not. Unfortunately, not everyone has a picture perfect life.
Didn't Think It Could Get Any Better!.......2006-09-13
I remember watching "Father of the Bride" over and over again growing up...dreaming of my own wedding! It was just one of those movies that you can never really get tired of. I was excited when they made "Father of the Bride 2" , but I really didn't have high hopes for it because I thought there was no way it could compete with the first...boy was I wrong. This movie is just as great as the first. With mother and daughter having a baby at the same time and all the same great characters back from the first movie...there was never a dull moment! If you liked the first you should love this movie!

This witty, musical version of The Philadelphia Story stars Bing Crosby, Grace Kelly, Frank Sinatra, and the jazz master himself, Louis Armstrong, playing the hottest trumpet in the land. Year: 1956 Director: Charles Waters Starring: Bing Crosby, Grace Kelly, Frank Sinatra, Louis Armstrong
Customer Reviews:
a strong musical remake of THE PHILADELPHIA STORY............2007-08-30
I absolutely adored THE PHILADELPHIA STORY, with Katharine Hepburn, Cary Grant and Jimmy Stewart, and didn't even know that there was a remake until I saw HIGH SOCIETY and learned what inspired it. Though, this film's plot is based on themes and conflicts depicted in the original, this version has a beautiful score by Cole Porter with songs like "True Love," and a great cast starring Grace Kelly in the role of Tracy Lord (originally played by Katharine Hepburn) and Bing Crosby in the role of C.K. Dexter-Haven (originallly played by Cary Grant). Lord is engaged to be married and her ex-husband, Dexter-Haven still has some unfinished business with her. What's more, a wily journalist (Frank Sinatra in the Jimmy Stewart role) and his assistant (Celeste Holm) are determined to get a story on Lord, a high profile socialite. The pending marriage results in uproar for all parties involved, with beautiful music interspersed between scenes.
The strong point of this film really is in its music. It adds so much to the plot, and, though, HIGH SOCIETY isn't quite as entertaining (in my opinion) as THE PHILADELPHIA STORY, it is definitely a lot of fun to watch. Grace Kelly looks beautiful, Frank Sinatra takes on Cole Porter's score with gusto and Bing Crosby is charming.
Not as good as I thought it would be........2007-08-09
High Society does not even compare to the superb direction of The Philadelphia Story. Although I am a huge fan of both Bing Crosby and Frank Sinatra, the acting in this film was lacking. No disrespect to Grace Kelly, but she doesn't hold a flame to Katharine Hepburn. Kelly's portrayal of Tracy Lord was horrific at best. Not only was the acting inferior, but also the musical numbers were shockingly dull, the best parts were the rhythmic stylings of Louis Armstrong. I recommend that if you watch this film try not to compare it with The Philadelphia Story, because it will only disappoint you.
fine musical adaptation of The Philadelphia Story.......2007-07-28
High Society is a splendid reinvention of The Philadelphia Story--as a musical. The numbers wow you with their star studded quality: we get Louis Armstrong, Frank Sinatra, Bing Crosby and Grace Kelly all singing beautifully against stunning backdrops. The movie has a quick pace that keeps your interest; and the lines are thought out well. The convincing acting enhances the film even more.
As the action begins, Tracy Lord (Grace Kelly) is just about to marry for a second time to George Kittredge (John Lund). Her first husband, Dexter Haven (Bing Crosby) who never truly stopped loving Tracy, lives rather conveniently next door--and he is determined to stop the marriage so that he himself can remarry Tracy and finally find true happiness with her. Dexter even hires Louis Armstrong (playing himself) and a jazz band to help him woo Tracy back!
Naturally, things become even more complicated when a tabloid blackmails Tracy's family into covering Tracy's wedding to George. Two tabloid reporters show up; and Frank Sinatra and Celeste Holm do a marvelous job of being a reporter and a photographer.
Initially, Tracy behaves in a manner that would make Katherine Hepburn proud: Tracy is strong and demanding of people; and she has nerves of steel. Gradually, however, as Tracy gets reacquainted with Dexter and comes to know the photographer (Frank Sinatra) and her fiancé George, Tracy may have to face some choices she didn't plan on having to make.
The convincing acting carries the film well; but the film runs at its best when the musical numbers deliver! Frank Sinatra and Bing Crosby do an excellent dialogue/duet of "Well, Did You Evah," and Bing sings "True Love" without a superfluous note. The movie also boasts a great number by Louis and his band as they perform "High Society Calypso" on their way to Dexter's home at the very beginning of the movie. These Cole Porter numbers glisten like gold! Great!
The color is exceptionally clear and crisp; and the choreography shines in crowded scenes like the dance scene at the party the night before Tracy and George are to be married.
The DVD boasts a few extras; some are better than others. There's a cartoon entitled "Millionaire Droopy" that I could do without; but the black and white newsreel footage of the premiere of High Society at The Pantages Theater thrills me even if it's only a bit more than a minute long. You also get radio ads (audio only, obviously) and Celeste Holm hosts a 15 or 20 minute retrospective of Cole Porter's influence on the movie High Society and how the movie was made.
High Society remains an excellent musical that never lets you down throughout its 111 minutes. The plots moves along at a brisk pace and you are kept guessing who Tracy will choose to marry almost until the end of the movie. The musical numbers couldn't be better, either.
I highly recommend this film for fans of classic musicals from MGM's dream factory; and people who enjoy romantic stories with a bit of comedy on the side will cherish this one for years to come!
High Society.......2007-04-03
I loved this film. The acting was better than many of the musicals I have, and it has some of the greatest singers of all time. The weakest acting was by Grace Kelly. I have several of her films and felt she was utilized for her extreme beauty and grace more than her acting ability. I think she made a better princess. However, musically you don't get better than Bing Crosby or Frank Sinatra, and the great Satchmo, Louis Armstrong...Wow! The story was based on a previous 1930's movie, "The Philadelphia Story" only it was moved geographically to Newport, RI. I feel this was a good choice, but then I lived in the Newport area for 20 years and there was a little nostalgia in it for me. I have seen this movie many times over, and I will see it over again. It's one you won't tire of. If they could have worked in some Gene Kelly or Fred Astaire dances, it could have been even better.
High Society DVD - Great Video .......2007-03-17
This is one of my wife's favorite movies and our VHS tape had faded. This DVD replaced it with clearer video, excellent sound, non-fade media and many extras. A very good value.

Description
Extremist groups waged a campaign of death threats, arson and riots to stop the production of this controversial film, but director Deepa Mehta would not be silenced. Set against Gandhi's rise to power, Water tells the profoundly moving story of Chuyia, an Indian girl married and widowed at eight years old, who is sent away to a home where Hindu widows must live in penitence. Chuyia's feisty presence deeply affects the other residents, forcing each to confront their faith and society's prejudices.

Water.......2007-07-30
wonderful movie....informative....earthy.....great movie....a wonderful look at life in India from a perspective westerners don't often see.....plus the director is masterful in the telling and delivery of this, I'm sure, politically and spiritually sensitive subject in some of the remoter areas of India
Excellent movie.......2007-07-12
This is a wonderful movie. The acting is powerful, and the directing skillful. Even though it is in subtitles it completely holds one's interest. It is one of the best movies I've seen in the last few years.
An irritating film to watch.......2007-06-10
I realize that this is rather shallow, but I honestly had trouble enjoying this movie as a result of how poorly done the subtitles were. Not only is the default language setting of the DVD set to Hindi, but then even when you do get the subtitles turned on, they turn out to be barely readable and flash on the screen for a second at best. What good is beautiful imagery if you can't understand whats going on?
Beautifully done.......2007-06-04
A beautifully told story. I enjoyed pretty much every aspect of this movie: The cinematography was beautiful, the dialog was entertaining and poignant, the symbolism was clever, and the message was powerful.
Water Review.......2007-05-13
WATER is one of those movies you will not regret seeing or owning. It is a powerful, emotion wringing film that explores the fate of young Indian widows and forms the third in the trilogy - EARTH, FIRE & WATER.
Together, they explore India's social and political history through the individual stories of the protanganists to form a body of work that deserves a wider audience than just the foreign film section of the DVD library.
