4 out of 5 stars A silly stupid movie that I love.......2006-08-06

Let me be very clear, this is a stupid movie. I am not pretending it is otherwise. Let me also say, I love to watch it over and over. The plot is early 1970's rock verses Elvis ... Could Elvis have hung on to the young crowd if he maintained his edge. That is the question the movie tries to answer and in any good feel good movie the answer is yes. It is an Elvis ROCKY story. I love Elvis, I love the tone, I love question it asks and the respect for both sides it gives, and I love the way it was played by the actors. Call me stupid, I like this movie.

4 out of 5 stars Get ready Elvis fans for Heartbreak Hotel .......2006-01-30

Before Christopher Columbus directed the Home Alone movies, Mrs. Doubtfire and the first 2 Harry Potter movies, he directed this film named Heartbreak Hotel. Tuesday Weld which I am sure that you may already know of, that co-started with the real life Elvis Presley, co-stars in this movie, and this time she is a diehard Elvis Presley fan. The year is 1972, and of course if the story is supposed to have Elvis Presley in it, it would have to take place during his lifetime. Now maybe it didn't win over the critics, but at least Elvis fans should be able to love and enjoy this film. But instead, it is David Keith that is taking on this role, and he is in and out so quickly, that you might even forget that he is in the movie. He is seen very breifly in the beginning of the movie, and then the story shifts over to a small town in Ohio. Johnny Wolfe (Charlie Schlatter) is a roll and roller that dreams of winning a school talent show, but every year he gets cut, and this year he believes it going to be differenmt, but once again, he and his bandmits goes to an aduition, and once again the souts cuts them, which he believes they don't like Rock and Roll. He lives with his Mom Marie Wolfe (Tuesday Weld) and kid sister Pam Wolfe (Angela Goethals), who believes that somebody is out to get her, if the lights are out when she is sleeping, and so she likes to sleep with the lights on. And he doesn't like his Mom's boyfriend, and when she is injured in a car crash, while on a short drive, and is in the hopsital. Johnny is waken up by a cop that came to his house to deliver the news, along with news that the door was left open. So he goes to visit her in the hospital, and then has a brainstrom of how he can cheer her up. And when he learns that Elvis Presley (David Keith) is coming to Cleveland to play a concert. So he and his badnmates makes a plan to go to the show and kidnap him, so he can bring him home to his mother. But Johnny has another problem, how to even get close to Elvis, and he remembers that Elvis was very close to his own mother Gladys Presley, until her death, and they know of a cook (Jacque Lynn Colton) that looks like her, so now he has to get her to agree to go to the show with them, looking exactly like Elvis' late Mother, and of course you should know how Elvis would react to this. And they take off for Cleveland, to attend the show, and to lure Elvis Presley away from his bandmates, and secuirty. And the plans works, but of course Elvis doesn't like this idea at first. Now I don't know that the scene in this movie, that they totally remake a scene from Loving You, which involves Elvis Presley himself is really that needed.

5 out of 5 stars A story tale to Elvis fans..........2005-08-06

Elvi's fan will love it! It is not real, David Keith is not the best "Elvis" around the world but he did a great performance with the songs in this movie. Also, almost two hours remembering the king. Need more?

5 out of 5 stars Better than Prozac - or something..."naughty!".......2004-06-20

When I'm not in a particularly pleasant mood, there are five movies that I watch as sort of "mood elavation." When I yearn for "days bygone," I sigh wistfully, think "been there-done that" and watch Cheech & Chong's "Up In Smoke." When my wife is in a rare cozy mood, we watch Jane Seymour and Christopher Reeve in "Somewhere In Time." When I am angry enough to, say, send Usama Ben Dover a map of...somebody's hometown with the caption, "Yo Mama Eat Poke," I will gleefully watch Chevy Chase's "Modern Problems." And when I'm of a most irresponsible frame of mind, I will almost wet my pants laughing at Nicholas Cage in "Raising Arizona." But as an ex-musician, a Southern ex-musician, one who sadly acknowledges the grim fact that Rock and Roll did indeed DIE on August 16, 1977, "Heartbreak Hotel" defnitely tops them all. The plot is almost non-existent - indeed, it ADMITS in the opening credits that "there are many stories about the King...this is a fable." The..."fable," you ask? It's 1972, Johnny Wolfe's Mom, as portrayed by the GORGEOUS Tuesday Weld, runs (and evidentally owns) a decaying motel, and she seems to be suffering from depression. She even has a jerk of a drunken, abusive boyfriend to make things "dramatic" or something. So Johnny, in between school, babbling about Alice Cooper, playing with his band ("The Wolfe Pack"), and raising his little sister Pammy, comes to the conclusion that kidnapping >Elvis Presley! < will cheer up his Mom. See? I TOLD you! CHEESE! NO plot! Still, watching Johnny "kidnap Elvis" and transform him into "the '56 Elvis" ("that's when Mom said you were the coolest"), and then, the sight of David Keith as Elvis, singing "Love Me" as Mrs. Wolfe comes home from a date - this is Rock and Roll CHEESE at its absolute FINEST, folks. And Heaven knows, given the current state of the mung that calls itself "rock and roll" right now, we could ALL use a few cheeseburgers ("cheeseburgers," by the way, are featured quite prominantly in the movie). No use in recounting any more of the plot - except that the next-to-final-scene, where "Elvis" and the "Wolfe Pack" hijack Johnny's high school's talent show and perform the song "Heartbreak Hotel" gives me the EXACT SAME THRILL as ANYTHING in the movie "Woodstock" ("Gimme Shelter" - now that's ANOTHER story altogether...we'll discuss IT later...). No, "Heartbreak Hotel" will never win any awards for anything (and thank The Lord for THAT), but if you want a GUARANTEED grin...check it out, y'all: excellent, EXCELLENT cheese!

    Product Description

Each program in the Impact! series puts the spotlight on the songs that have left an indelible mark on the world. Certain songs have come to define the times in which they appeared as they proved to be the catalyst for the transformation of the cultural and political landscape. Most set trends in music, fashion and dance while flouting convention and testing the boundaries of society's accepted moral values.

Besides setting the scene for the release of the song, the programs feature the songs creator(s) and explore its cultural impact and the ways that it changed the course of history. Guests include recording artists, music industry executives, cultural and political pundits and the music fans themselves for whom these songs became their life's soundtrack.

Heartbreak Hotel was not Elvis Presley's first single -- songs like That's Alright Mama, Mystery Train and I Forgot To Remember To Forget, his first national chart-topping hit, predated it by a year -- but it was destined in many ways to define the Elvis persona and arguably become the first rock 'n' roll record. It was a song of teenage angst. Not the puppy love hand-wringing of later songs of the era but the real end-of-the-line, so-lonely-I-could-die variety that in those early days only Elvis and his rebel stance could make ring with authenticity. It established rock 'n' roll as an attitude -- brash, rebellious and sexually- charged -- as much as a musical style and gave it life as the soundtrack for alienated youth even during American boom times in the '50s. John Lennon once commented that if there had been no Elvis, there would have been no Beatles.

With song clips, archive interviews with Levon Helm, Carl Perkins, Scotty Moore, Waylon Jennings, Jerry Lee Lewis, Charlie Daniels, Engelbert Humperdinck

5 out of 5 stars Not too short, not too long and Priced right!.......2007-09-13

This is one of a series of 12 reasonably priced ($9.99 list) DVDs released in the US by SRO (Part of Kultur International) under the umbrella "Impact: Songs That Changed The World". Each runs about 24 minutes as it was co-produced by Canadain TV and broadcast on the cable CMT network in the US in 2002 and 2003.

I could cell from the quality of the editing - even before I saw the end credits - that this was produced by Gregory Hall. Hall - who also makes music documentaries under his own Hallmark Productions banner - has been cranking these out for about 20 years years now. I first saw his Country Music bios. They've always been well edited and usually contain great interview "sound bites". The four volumes in this series that I;ve watched so far are no exception. Some of the interviews were recent at the time of the show's production while some go back to the 80s and 90s and have appeared in other Hall productions. (You can tell by the locations where they were taped.)

Most of the Impact series DVDs cover more than the single records that are the topics. They also cover the impact that artist - at that point in time - had on our culture from style of dress to style of music.

In the case of the "Heartbreak Hotel" volume, the focus is on the hard rock sound of Elvis' big hit. Little Richard said that Elvis was "the door that white kids walked through to discover black music". And that's what we learn from video sound bites - many from earlier Hall produced interviews - from Chet Atkins, Carl Perkins, Sam Phillips, and more. Members of Elvis' band are here too as well as Levon Helm of The Band. There are a few rock historians and music critics and - like the Madonna volume - we get Jeanne Baker of Fashion TV taking about how Elvis influenced fashion in the late 1950s.

Like the others in this series the DVD does a really nice job of presenting a sociological study of how one single pop record can affect a whole culture, without belaboring the point. These DVDS will leave a legacy to the next generation and can be very useful in, not only music history classes but in the study of late 20th century "pop culture"

(2 *'s) 'Elvis: Rare moments with the King,' is published by the same company that released 'Elvis: King of Entertainment'. It is shorter and repeats the highlights of the latter. With almost no musical samples, '...Rare Moments...' is almost more an archive of Elvis's sociological importance. It is interesting to see him interviewed on guest TV performances, but '...King of Entertainment...' has all of the best moments presented here plus some snippets of musical and film performances.

(3 1/2 *'s) 'Elvis: King of Entertainment' is more of a documentary than it is a compilation of performances. An overview of the highlights of his life, his career, his performances, and his movies, it makes a fine sampler. Interspersed with television performances and interviews, it is a testament to the phenomena that Elvis is and was. The only drawback is that the brief touches of each highlight will only be teasing and never really satisfying. Seeing footage of his army induction, his wedding, and early as well as Las Vegas performances are an interesting draw.

    4 out of 5 stars 2 pack? Mine wasn't.......2005-02-08

It is called a "2 pack" but I had only 1 DVD recorded on both sides. This DVD has a lot of the great old B&W as well as color footage. Elvis from birth, then as a kid, in high school & with mom & dad. Then the usual early footage (or pieces of) from The Tommy Dorsey "stage show", the Tupelo concert with Elvis in black, the AWFUL Steve Allen show "tumbleweed" skit, Ed Sullivan, Milton Berle (on stage & on a ship), Hy Gardner calling, the "gas station fight" court room scene and the Frank Sinatra show; the things that most true Elvis fans have all seen repeatedly. There is, of course, the Army footage, the wedding shots, the 68 special, Aloha from Hawaii, many shots of Graceland, assorted 70's footage (from Elvis on tour, Las Vegas & the 3 press interviews) and even some clips from his movies (but not all of them). And it ends with many scenes from his final days and the aftermath. Although this DVD is really very well done, my only complaint is that 90% of the material on side 1, IS ON SIDE 2! And I do mean 90%! I only paid $5 for this so I am not mad but Goodtimes should know better than to try this. As with all Elvis documentaries, this one doesn't show the good stuff much longer than a few seconds. I'd really like to see the "Youth Benefit Concert", (where Elvis is really Elvis! [arm swinging & pelvis pumping], played in it's entirety with the right sound track. We always see the same 15 second clip with some other song dubbed in and that's it. Anyone know where I can find it? My advice here is to enjoy this one, but don't pay too much for it, only one side is really needed.
