Perhaps Stripes and Caddyshack screenwriter Harold Ramis and Commando director Mark Lester were not an ideal collaborative team. But while this 1986 misfit comedy is something of a misfire, SCTV fans can take heart in watching John Candy and Eugene Levy triumph over weak material as mismatched security guards who stumble upon mob corruption. Candy, in particular, does wonders with a role that in lesser hands would have been a mere "fatty falls down" stereotype. He plays a cynical disgraced cop who takes Levy's cowardly former lawyer under his wing ("Stick with me, I'll keep you out of trouble," he reassures him). Like Ramis's character in Stripes, Levy rises to the occasion under fire, and even gets the girl--Meg Ryan in early ingénue mode, trying out the fetching grins and ingratiating smiles that would make her America's sweetheart three years later in When Harry Met Sally. --Donald Liebenson

This is just one of John Candy's very entertaining movies. I highly recommend it.

very funny film, good cast.......2006-11-13

This film follows John Candy, a police officer who gets fired for a crime he did not commit, and Eugene Levy, a poor excuse for a lawyer through private security guard school and into the new career of Night Watchmen. Little did they know that they would stumble across a conspiracy which they are the only ones poised to unveil. Bolstered in Cast by Meg Ryan, this film has many funny parts that do get you chuckling pretty hard. Along the lines of the Great Outdoors, this film is worth adding to a good comedy collection.

This is an off the wall comedy. With john Candy and Eugen Levy. I had to get this one. Lots of laughs

and add 'Commando's' Dir., Harold Ramis
and (!) James Keach (!!) to the writers
and what do you have? An only moderately
funny John Candy movie! There are some
great bits in here - but this movie is
the greatest waste of space (make that
talent!) since Greenland! Robert Loggia
and Meg Ryan are wasted in stupid stereo-
typical roles. And Levy with Ryan?! About
as bad as Billy (Clipper-fan, his only
redeeming quality!) Crystal with Ryan!
Or Tom Hanks! Lester did better here
than with 'Commando',but is that really
saying much!?

I ordered the John Candy version of Armed and Dangerous, but received a video with naked women carrying guns, also called ARMED AND DANGEROUS. What do I have to do to get the movie I ordered? I got the movie for my wife, and she has no desire to sit around looking at naked women on a movie.

This is a great DVD. Beautiful women, cool guns, what more can you ask for?! The interactive game is pretty cool as well.

They fortunately have wide-ranging climates in the former Soviet Union, so if you wanna see the dusty, sun-baked Old West, this movie has it. It's a little disconcerting to hear those leathery cowboys speak Russian, but the authenticity makes up for it. ONE word of warning, though: Even though the movie's setting is the U.S. of A., the political ideology presented is pure Bolshevik.
