5 out of 5 stars Great new edition of one of the best movies ever........2007-09-14

Anyone who hasn't seen Serenity and Firefly, the TV show that preceeded it, doesn't know what they are missing. Really well developed characters, great dialogue, great story, great acting. Joss Whedon writes some of the best female characters around. No idiodic portrayals of a woman dying of a broken heart and leaving her twin babies motherless like someone in a more famous sci-fi movie. These people could be real and they are all characters that are flawed, but have a lot to be admired for too.

5 out of 5 stars One of the best Sci-fi movies to come out in years!!!.......2007-09-14

Whether you have seen Firefly or not, I think there is something anyone can enjoy about Serenity. I actually saw this movie before watching the Firefly series. I was so intrigued by the story I wanted to see more and believe me, I was not disappointed. Firefly is now one of my favorite TV shows of all time with Serenity being on of my favorite movies.

If you have seen Firefly, there probably won't be any need to tell you how good this movie is. I'm sure you will buy it anyway. But if you are a hardcore fan, there are more extras in this collector's edition that I'm sure you won't want to miss.

For those of you who are just looking for a decent science-fiction film, look no further. This movie has great action, humor, and special affects and it truly cares about its characters. Please please please see this movie!!!

5 out of 5 stars Now for the sequel...........2007-09-14

I loved the show and the movie so now watching the deleted scenes and getting the background information (which were amazing, BTW) I just have to say this: "Joss push for a sequel!" I know that this will never happen, but I can dream. Or I can really genie it and hope that the SciFi channel will come to its senses and re-up this show. Ah yes, back to Firefly.

Anyone who even liked the show has to get this version of the movie! It is a must have for any DVD collection. And don't forget to watch it with the commentaries on.

5 out of 5 stars Big Damn Collector's Edition.......2007-09-13

Buy two, or three... buy enough so that sales warrant Serenity 2! All the glory of Serenity with the awesomeness of a new cast commentary, new key art and a bunch of sweet new featurettes!

Serenity offers perfect proof that Firefly deserved a better fate than premature TV cancellation. Joss Whedon's acclaimed sci-fi Western hybrid series was ideally suited (in Browncoats, of course) for a big-screen conversion, and this action-packed adventure allows Whedon to fill in the Firefly backstory, especially the history and mystery of the spaceship Serenity's volatile and traumatized stowaway, River Tam (Summer Glau). Her lethal skills as a programmed "weapon" makes her a coveted prize for the power-hungry planetary Alliance, represented here by an Operative (Chiwetel Ejiofor) who'll stop at nothing to retrieve River from Serenity's protective crew. We still get all the quip-filled dialogue and ass-kicking action that we've come to expect from the creator of Buffy the Vampire Slayer, but Whedon goes a talented step further here, blessing his established ensemble cast with a more fully-developed dynamic of endearing relationships. Serenity's cast is led with well-balanced depth and humor by Nathan Fillion as Captain Mal Reynolds, whose maverick spirit is matched by his devotion to crewmates Wash (Alan Tudyk), Zoe (Gina Torres), fun-loving fighter Jayne (Adam Baldwin), engineer Kaylee (Jewel Staite), doctor Simon (Sean Maher), and Mal's former flame Inara (Morena Baccarin), who plays a pivotal role in Whedon's briskly-paced plot. As many critics agreed, Serenity offered all the fun and breezy excitement that was missing from George Lucas's latter-day Star Wars epics, and Whedon leaves an opening for a continuing franchise that never feels cheap or commercially opportunistic. With the mega-corporate mysteries of Blue Sun yet to be explored, it's a safe bet we haven't seen the last of the good ship Serenity. --Jeff Shannon

1 out of 5 stars Couldn't Get Into This One.......2007-09-09

Not having ever watched the TV series, I walked into this one with no preconceived notions. As an HD DVD, the picture and sound was phenomenal. But...I stopped watching about half way through it because it was boring. There was a brief glimpse of action when River morphed into a Trinity-inspired kung-fu master (Matrix reference). Other than that, I found this to be a Star Trek inspired knock-off. My understanding is that the TV series was cancelled. I now know why.

5 out of 5 stars Thank you Joss Whedon! SPOILER ALERT.......2007-09-09

Another job well done! I loved this movie but the movie cover stinks. Where in the movie does anything on the front cover happen? I'm glad that the movie came out and it was an awesome movie. It really tied up loose ends! Thank you Joss Whedon!

As for the people mad about the preacher dying and Wash dying, they wanted to be written out of the script in case they brought the show back. It wasn't Joss' call.

5 out of 5 stars Serenity extension of Firefly.......2007-09-07

If you enjoyed the series Firefly, you will LOVE this movie. It is a great extension of the series. I wish there was more for us to view, but this is as good a "wrap" as you could ask for!

5 out of 5 stars Best Movie I've Seen Lately.......2007-09-05

This is a movie that I came upon from the critics on TV (you know, two names of two guys that have a lot to say). Well, I was glad that they did. This movie had me fall in love with all the characters in the story line and then also in the story line too. I enjoyed both the male and female roles and this is usually not the case for me. The name "Serenity" is the name of the spaceship that finds itself home for everyone. The way that the spaceship looked and was laid out was great to look at. The plot lines of the movie was great and I suggest you see the TV shows first (named "Firefly" after the type of spaceship that Serenity is designed as). The TV shows will give you a lot of insight on the characters and how they interact and this makes the movie much more enjoyable. I purchased both the seasons for Firefly and the movie; something I rarely do. I feel that there is so much good stuff out there why would I want to take up the time watching something more that at least twice. But I know that I will watch all of these many more times that two as I have a not so secret crush on the main character, Mal. Hope everyone out there enjoys this movie as much as I do.

3 out of 5 stars Love the series, love the movie..........2007-09-03

I purchased the FIREFLY series awhile before this film came out. Feel sorry for those who went into a theatre (or bought the DVD) to watch SERENITY without such a background; may have been totally incomprehensible, certainly lacking in any emotional commitment. That is why the 3 stars...

The character of newspaperman Chuck Taylor (Kirk Douglas) is best summed up by an astonished bystander (herself no soft touch): "I met a lot of hard-boiled eggs in my time, but you--you're 20 minutes!" Meet the "hero" of Billy Wilder's corrosive 1951 classic Ace in the Hole (a.k.a. The Big Carnival), a former big-time reporter whose reputation is so tarnished he's now at an Albuquerque rag, chasing down local-interest stuff. Until, that is, a local miner gets stuck in a cave--a situation that Taylor not only exploits but actually manipulates, the better to improve his career chances. Wilder got the idea for the movie from the real-life media circus that followed the Floyd Collins story (Collins was trapped in a cave for over a week in 1925). Needless to say, the opportunities for displaying greed and venality are fully drawn out by Wilder; indeed, the film looks unbelievably prescient from a modern perspective of media overload.

Although Wilder had scored a success with Sunset Boulevard just a year earlier, he misread the public's ability to stare into the merciless mirror he held up to them in Ace in the Hole. The movie bombed. Paramount changed the title to The Big Carnival, thus wrecking one of Wilder's most acidic puns, but it didn't help. It also doesn't matter: Ace in the Hole is one of the truly grown-up movies of its time, and age has only improved it. Wilder's ear for cynical dialogue is honed to its sharpest point, and Kirk Douglas has one of his best parts, which he attacks with customary ferocity. Jan Sterling plays the hard-nosed wife of the trapped man, with Porter Hall as Douglas's publisher--the lone voice of decency in the film's cruel parade. Admirably, Wilder takes this all the way down the line: the ending of the movie might be the best in-your-face finish since Public Enemy. --Robert Horton

Studio description

One of the most scathing indictments of American culture ever produced by a Hollywood filmmaker, Academy Award-winner Billy Wilder's Ace in the Hole is legendary for both its cutting social critique and its status as a hard-to-find cult classic. Kirk Douglas gives the fiercest performance of his career as Chuck Tatum, an amoral newspaper reporter caught in dead-end Albuquerque who happens upon the story of a lifetime-and will do anything to ensure he gets the scoop. Wilder's follow-up to Sunset Boulevard is an even darker vision, a no-holds-barred expose that anticipated the rise of the American media circus.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Good Wilder, Good Douglas.......2007-09-05

Stating that any one movie is "the most cynical" is highly subjective. There is a lot of competition! Yet "Ace in the Hole" has to be considered one of the most biting of releases. Kirk Douglas finds himself in Albuquerque, New Mexico, a former big city hotshot reporter caught in a downward career spiral. He lands a job at the local paper, ambitiously determined to claw his way back to the big time. When a man is trapped in a mine cave in, KD senses his big chance. KD aggressively manipulates the story and shamelessly drags out the rescue effort to get rehired at a New York tabloid. This reviewer is not a big KD fan but one has to give credit where it's due - he is perfectly cast here, never wavering throughout the film. The supporting cast including Jan Sterling, Ray Teal and Porter Hall are excellent. They play the trapped man's venal wife, the feckless sheriff and KDs straight shooting editor. Legend has that KD was concerned that he was overplaying his role, bur Director Billy Wilder ordered him not to let up. Other reviewers have compared AH to other Wilder classic such as "Double Indemnity" or "The Lost Weekend". Such accolades belong in the eyes of the beholder but to even drop such a mention is a high compliment indeed. This reviewer finds it difficult to believe that AH did not succeed commercially, having to wait decades for acclaim

2 out of 5 stars Shocking disappointment!!!!!.......2007-09-04

As to be expected, Criterion has gone all out with this edition of Billy Wilder's "lost" classic; love the insert booklet that folds out ike a newspaper. The question is IS IT WORTH IT?
My father used to rave to me about this movie and after finally having seen it I can't help but scream WHY????? The production values are top notch and the building hysteria is perfectly judged and expertly paced but at the epicentre of the action is Kirk Douglas in what is unquestionably the hammiest most overwrought performance, well, ever. Could anyone ever be this consistently cold-blooded? From the minute he struts onto the screen (he'd last 5 minutes in my office) it's blistering, unadulterated arrogance. I get it, believe me, that's the kind of man he's playing but Douglas' performance should've crept up on us, instead we get our nose broken...and he keeps punching us. Did Wilder tell him to perform as if he's on the stage? Jan Sterling gives an interesting performance but the raves I've been reading all these years are wildly exaggerated. Her final moment bustling off with the big crowd is beautifully handled but we needed to see more of her.
No doubt about it, Wilder was one of the greatest directors in the history of cinema but time hasn't been good to ACE IN THE HOLE. It's dated...so dated. This makes Douglas' wooden performance in SPARTACUS look like Oscar fodder. What a cryin' shame William Holden was unavailable. He would delivered what was needed and it might've been the masterpiece everyone thinks it is.
I put this on auction on EBAY an hour later.

5 out of 5 stars Ace In the Hole.......2007-09-03

Ace in the Hole was filmed right outside of my home town, Gallup, New Mexico. It was named "The Big Circus" when it was being filmed here and many local residents are extras in the film. It is very dark and seedy and it portrays the worst side of journalism. As a journalist myself, I love this movie although I can't imagine myself going to the lengths Kirk Douglas does in this film to get a story. Great beginning, great ending, great black and white filming.

I had to buy this movie, because I couldn't rent it anywhere, it was all rented out, including on Netflix. It's fantastic on the big screen, but this package has a bonus CD.

5 out of 5 stars Prescient.......2007-09-03

Ace in the Hole so accurately predicts the decline of journalism into entertainment that it is uncanny.

This DVD is a beautiful remaster with rich blacks and silver whites. Wilder pulls off some amazing scenes, such as a tourist train done without CGI. Look for his penchant of composing in a triangle.

Kirk Douglas is, well, Kirk Douglas. His variety of scenery-eating perfectly matches the topic matter.

It took a long time to get a DVD release of this movie and leave it to Criterion to dig up a neglected master work.

5 out of 5 stars Why Don't You Wash That Platinum Out of Your Hair?.......2007-08-29

This movie, an all-time classic film noir effort by Billy Wilder, is now available on DVD after such a long wait, and it was worth it.

The special features are just terrific. Wilder fans get to see an extended interview with him, excerpts from his AFI meetings, and more. Kirk Douglas fans get to see an interview with him where he discloses the care for his craft and his commitment to honest portrayal, regardless of the degree of sympathy his characters (as written) might stir up.

This 1951 movie failed in the United States because postwar America was not ready for the unsparing, unsympathetic view Wilder and Douglas take to the story. It's almost too honest to bear. But if you accept that premise, you are treated to exceptional acting and directing in a beautifully restored film with great historical significance.

Wilder saw the future and put it on the screen for us. We're now living in the media world he knew, fifty years ago, was materializing for us.

And we created and continue to nurture it.

Like its predecessor Ocean's Eleven, Ocean's Twelve is a piffle of a caper, a preposterous plot given juice and vitality by a combination of movie star glamour and the exuberant filmmaking skill of director Steven Soderbergh (Out of Sight, The Limey). The heist hijinks of the first film come to roost for a team of eleven thieves (including the glossy mugs of Brad Pitt, Matt Damon, Bernie Mac, and Don Cheadle), who find themselves pursued not only by the guy they robbed (silky Andy Garcia), but also by a top-notch detective (plush Catherine Zeta-Jones) and a jealous master thief (well-oiled Vincent Cassel) who wants to prove that team leader Danny Ocean (dapper George Clooney) isn't the best in the field. As if all that star power weren't enough--and the eternally coltish Julia Roberts also returns as Ocean's wife--one movie star cameo raises the movie's combined wattage to absurd proportions. But all these handsome faces are matched by Soderbergh's visual flash, cunning editing, and excellent use of Amsterdam, Paris, and Rome, among other highly decorative locations. The whole affair should collapse under the weight of its own silliness, but somehow it doesn't--the movie's raffish spirit and offhand wit soar along, providing lightweight but undeniable entertainment. --Bret Fetzer

Description

They're back. And then some. Twelve is the new eleven when Danny Ocean and pals return in a sequel to the cool caper that saw them pull off a $160 million heist. But 160 million doesn't go as far as it used to. Not with everyone spending like sailors on leave. Not with a mysterious someone stalking Danny and crew. It's time to pull off another stunner of a plan?or plans. With locations including Amsterdam, Paris and Rome, the direction of Steven Soderbergh and the original cast plus Catherine Zeta-Jones and others, Twelve is your lucky number.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Best one out of the three.......2007-08-17

This is my favorite ocean movie out of the three, though i love them all. The addition of katherine zeta jones is totally awesome! The movie is fresh with great humor. Each character had a great role. Very entertaining movie.

2 out of 5 stars Shallow Ocean.......2007-08-05

Substituting Star Power over story, "Oceans 12" is a big gang flick that aimlessly wanders through its 2 hours. The crew of Danny Ocean reassemble after Benedict (Andy Garcia) tracks them down and demands restitution for his stolen money. The crew (minus Carl Reiner) travel to Paris and get into an ego war with super-theif Vincent Cassale (who seems awfully petty for a super-theif), then spend the remainder of the movie out-witting him and Catherine Zeta-Jones, who falls for Brad Pitt. With the exception of Matt Damon, eveyone else plays minor roles.

Unlike "Ocean's Eleven," where everyone had a bit to chew on, the focus hits mostly the superstars. Bernie Mac is taken out early, and spends most of his time sitting mum in a jail cell. There is only one decent set piece in this plunder clod of a film, and that is Bruce Willis' cameo as he recognizes Julia Roberts as Tess Ocean faking being Julia Roberts. (And maybe the breakdance-in-the-laserbeam heist bit). But otherwise, "Ocean's 12" spends far too much time acting like one big inside joke; the really cool stars goofing in a movie because they can. Somebody should have reminded them that movie stars need plots to be interesting, and other people in home movies (beautiful people or not) are still boring people in home movies.

3 out of 5 stars An Ok film.......2007-07-21

This is not that easy to follow. Compared toOcean's eleven, I had a hard time keeping up with what was happening through the film. It was hard to keep track of Clooney's character, and all the others. I would reccomend people see Ocean's eleven. In my opinion, this sequel doesn't make it as a good film.

1 out of 5 stars should be retitled "Zeta-Jones's Twelve".......2007-06-13

The plot was slightly more serious in this film, and it was dominated by Pitt and Zeta-Jones (mostly Zeta-Jones). The main drawbacks for the sequel are that the heist is not the major focus, the "supporting" characters did not get the opportunity to play pivotal roles in the heist, and it lacked the lighthearted atmosphere and stylishness of the first film. While Catherine Zeta-Jones is a very lovely woman, I felt that her plot was dull, interesting and terribly predictable, and I despised her character as the foil. The sub-plot (the heist) and the other characters deserved more screen time because that is what made me love the first movie. Can't really say much more about the movie because it was utterly forgettable and a waste of time.

3 out of 5 stars This is lazy `sequel' that tends to do nothing but bring back a bunch of celebrities.......2007-06-13

"Ocean's Twelve" faces the same difficulties as any sequel. By this I don't mean those movies that are essential components to trilogies that continue the story; I mean those movies that basically take an established cast and throw them in a completely new storyline. The problem is trying to meet the expectations of an audience that loved the first and wants a new movie to love for all the same reasons. So many people were disappointed to learn that "Ocean's Twelve" was not yet another heist movie.

This film had to be a sequel. The plot takes advantage of the relationships the characters developed in the first film, and throws in many subtle jokes the average viewer may miss if they don't listen closely. Some of the phrases like "thief a la mode" used in the film may require a bit of culture to appreciate. While Ocean's teams do work together in the same fashion as the first film, the thievery itself doesn't take the spotlight in the film. "Ocean's Eleven" was the traditional heist film in its plot development with its climax at the point of executing the plan. Ocean's Twelve breaks away from this formula in favor of developing opportunities for some great character interaction.

The film disappoints with many characters taking a back seat in their roles to such an extent that the film could have been named after Pitt's character, with the Benedict aftermath merely serving as a catalyst for the characters finding their way back together. However, it would have been unreasonable for all eleven original characters to share an equal share of the spotlight and still turn out as well. The story is more about Brad Pitt and Catherine Zeta-Jones than George Clooney and Julia Roberts. The rest of the cast perform very well and the guest-star appearances, including an unforgettable one by Bruce Willis, are hysterical. Half of the time I was unsure if the actors were even acting!! It appeared as if they were not even looking at the script, and instead talking amongst themselves like, "Hey, so how you've been?". "Oh, I `v been good, the kids at home are taking up a lot of my time, ya know". Come on now, really.

In the end, "Ocean's Twelve" is not a mere heist film but an Intelligent Comedy that may need to be watched more than once to appreciate some of the subtleties in the dialog. Just the amount of activity on this film's message board regarding some of the subtleties in the plot is a testament to the thought that went into making this film. Will "Ocean 13" rectify this, well I would have to go see it for myself.

Description

A passenger with a deadly secret. Six rebels on the run. An assassin in pursuit. When the renegade crew of Serenity agrees to hide a fugitive on their ship, they find themselves in an action-packed battle between the relentless military might of a totalitarian regime who will destroy anything - or anyone - to get the girl back and the bloodthirsty creatures who roam the uncharted areas of space. But, the greatest danger of all may be on their ship. From the mind of Joss Whedon (Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Angel) comes a new edge-of-your-seat adventure loaded with explosive battles, gripping special effects and fantastic new worlds.

    Product Description

Mike Nelson, Kevin Murphy, and Bill Corbett, three of the brilliantly insane minds behind the cult classic TV show Mystery Science Theater 3000 (MST3K)finally reunite to unleash their warped sense of humor on the cinema of yesteryear as The Film Crew. Charged with the task of giving all movies their own commentary tracks, the Film Crew valiantly steps forward to tackle the best of the worst, taking on the sci-fi b-movie classic Killers From Space. When a scientist (Peter Graves) uncovers an unbelievable alien plot to conquer Earth using giant insects and reptiles, he finds himself alone in a battle to save the world. But is Earth s technology enough to defend the planet from the evil Astronians from Astrol Delta?

    Customer Reviews:

    5 out of 5 stars Very Funny.......2007-09-13

It may not rival the classic Comedy Central-era MST3K -- what can? -- but it is easily on par with -- and is probably better than -- the later Sci-Fi versions of MST3K. As such, it is funnier than almost anything else that is currently being produced.

It is hard to fathom how any fan of MST3K could not find anything -- let alone quite a bit -- to enjoy in this. As for whether the Film Crew wastes the "potential" of this or that movie, if a reviewer feels that he or she can be more creative or comical than Messrs. Nelson, Murphy, and Corbett, please, let us see your genius. Until that time, let the rest of us peacefully enjoy the creativity and comic genius of this team.

4 out of 5 stars Good, but not the Crew's best.......2007-09-08

Overall I was was a little underwhelmed by this Film Crew release. Maybe it's because I saw their Hollywood After Dark (which is 5-Star funny, by the way) just before watching this one, but I've seen Mike, Kevin, and Bill do better. However, after giving it another try (sometimes their stuff requires repeated viewing to fully appreciate), it wasn't all that bad. Still, me giving Killers four stars is a gift to them from a devoted Mistie.

    2 out of 5 stars I love mst3k but..........2007-09-05

Mst3k was a very funny show, I thought. And this... it had a few funny lines in it and the rest was just crude. I think if they cleaned up their act a little it would be a lot better.

4 out of 5 stars Fun movie to goof on.......2007-09-02

This movie is so bad it's fun to watch without the film crew commentary. The acting is terrible, the editing is horrible, and the special effects are the worst I've ever seen. Even the film crew had to wonder what the people in the 50's were thinking when they made this.

While the Film Crew is not MST3K, they do spend more time working the movie, rather than messing around with props and side stories. Which is good or bad, depending on what you liked about MST3K.

Note to Film Crew. Since this is not acually on TV, maybe you could mix in some more colorful language. It could make a gag twice as funny.

    3 out of 5 stars Gosh darn't....I miss MST3K!.......2007-08-28

I've bought two so far of the Film Crew series and.. and well.. nuts. the insanity btw the stranded guy and the bots vs. the mad scientist below is truly lost. It's a more miss then hit for this. I will buy more since I'm dumb. You decide on your own if this ride suites you.

Blake Edwards's delightful 1959 comedy stars Cary Grant as a World War II submarine captain whose preference for a by-the-book command reluctantly yields to certain realities. Chief among those is that Grant's first officer (Tony Curtis, who impersonated Grant that same year in Billy Wilder's Some Like It Hot), a shameless hustler, is better than the navy at delivering whatever supplies the ship and crew need to keep going. But when Curtis sneaks a handful of Philippine refugees and several gorgeous nurses onto the all-male sub, the skipper not only has to cool down his crew but deal with an unexpected feminine influence on ship protocol. The film is a great deal of fun, sprinkled with the director's trademark sight gags (including one of Edwards's best, involving a torpedo and jeep), and graced with his unmistakable lilt. Grant is in great form, his comic brilliance almost impossibly effortless. --Tom Keogh

A FINE MOVIE IN THE STYLE OF THE GREAT ARTISTS, NOW SADLY GONE TO BE
    REPLACED BY UNWHOLESOME FILTH.

    5 out of 5 stars Hilarious movie........2007-05-30

Ranks right up there with "Father Goose" as one of Cary Grant's funniest movies. Great family fun.

    5 out of 5 stars A Movie for All........2007-05-14

This is one of my favorite oldie's. I had pretty much worn my VHS out and needed another one, so the DVD had to be the new choice. Always loved Gary Grant. It's a good clean movie and very enjoyable. The type of movie I can let the grandchildren watch with no worries. I don't like most of the movies that are made today, so I still stick the good older ones. There are sooooo many laughs in this movie and yes, most of the time I watch it by myself. If you are havin or had a bad day, this movie will lift you spirit. Buy it, you wont be sorry.

    5 out of 5 stars Operation Petticoat.......2007-05-14

I love this movie. I like most of Cary Grant's movies. This movie is very funny and entertaining. Why can't the film industry make good movies like this anymore?

    5 out of 5 stars Judy.......2007-04-10

Tony Randall and Cary Grant are excellent in this flick !! This is one of my favorite movies, even if it is an "oldie". I have seen it 20 times and still laugh.
