After years of enduring Roger Moore in the role of James Bond, it was good to have Sean Connery back in this 1983 film for a one-time-only trip down 007's memory lane. Connery's Bond, a bit of a dinosaur in the British secret service at (then) 52, is still in demand during times of crisis. Sadly, the film is not very good. In this rehash of Thunderball, Bond is pitted against a worthy underwater villain (Klaus Maria Brandauer); and while the requisite Bond Girls include beauties Kim Basinger and Barbara Carrera, they can't save the movie. The script has several truly dumb passages, among them a (gasp) video-game duel between 007 and his nemesis that now looks utterly anachronistic. For Connery fans, however, this widescreen print of the Irvin Kershner (The Empire Strikes Back) film is a chance to say a final goodbye to a perfect marriage of actor and character. --Tom Keogh

1 out of 5 stars When Sean Connery said "Never Again" to playing 007, he should have meant it!.......2007-08-10

I remember being a very big 007 fan at the time I saw this. I was actually quite young when I saw this and I had a copy of it on tape. I must say I liked it, but that was because I was 9. I just went back and recently watched this movie again, and now I see the reason of the criticism (sp?) for this movie. It really is that bad. Here is my reason for hating this movie:

1. The action scenes were a joke. Camera shots too long, looks like they were edited together in 5 minutes, and lame vehicle choice for the chase scenes. The music was a joke too, instead of music to fit the mood we get Elevator jazz music! WTF!

2. This is basically a Thunderball remake, and a pretty pointless one too. There are very big changes (the burst button being on the dashboard of the bike instead of the handle WTF?), and no reason for them.

3. This was NOT the 007 I knew! This was not the smooth-talkin', flirty Bond that we got in the old and new movies! He wasn't the smart Bond who would do things his own way in Life-or-Death situations, he'd just do the old cliched escapes.

4. The dialogue is cringe-inducingly bad! Example:

Fatima: You're still wet!
007: Yes, but my Martini's still dry.

5. The music! HORRIBLE! We'd get that cliche'd DA DA DAAAAAAA music in suspenseful scenes, and some elevator jazz music in action scenes.

6. The acting was unintentionally hilarious. Kim Basinger's wooden performance had me laughing at times, and Sean Connery stinks the role BIG TIME. Rowan Atkinson sucks too, he is a funny actor, but there's one place he dosen't belong: In a 007 movie.

7. The sets look bad, the NSNA looks like it's been around for 100 years, and the whole movie looks like it was made on a budget of $20. But that's completely understandable, much of the film's budget was spent on getting Sean Connery back.

That's me done. I can't understand why I liked this film, it sucked. Please avoid this.

3 out of 5 stars Remake better than Thunderball -- but..........2007-08-08

While this remake of Thunderball is better in story development and action than the original, it lacks the technical genius of the Broccoli films. Kim Basinger can't act, can't dance, and is having a bad hair day throughout the movie. On the other hand Barbara Carrera is one of the great Bond villians. More importantly, like they said way back in the sixties -- Sean Connery IS James Bond and that's never changed.

1 out of 5 stars Worst Bond Film ever.......2007-06-25

While watching this film I was disgusted, not only was it a blatent rip-off of Thunderball, but they tried to be funny in this movie, which in my opinion they completely failed, if you are thinking about buying this movie, I would rent it first. This movie may appeal to some, but thank God I saw it on TV, because if I would have bought this movie I would have been even sicker than I was after watching this travesty. You have me correct this movie made me sick, now all may not feel the same as I, but if you are thinking about buying this movie, and you haven't seen it yet. I would suggest renting, though if you really like the movie, or you are a completest, Bond fan, well then go for it. Though in my opinion, this is the worst Bond movie I've seen, especially the worst Sean Connery "Bond" film I've seen. Though I must say Kim Basinger was very hot. So I leave the decision up to you.

3 out of 5 stars uhhhhhhhhh................2007-06-14

As much as I liked Connery as Bond, I just didn't like this movie.

1 out of 5 stars DOWN WITH REMAKES!.......2007-05-27

I've never been a big fan of remakes. It seems to be particularly annoying with this one, since the main actor was also the one who starred in the original. This would seem to make re-hashing this movie a pointless endeavour. Why not just watch the original? I find it hard to believe that so many other reviewers have said this is a good movie.

4 out of 5 stars Hilarious Comedy for "Middle Ages".......2007-01-10

This movie is perfect for people in their 40ies and/or 50ies. It just hits the bullseye. Lean back and enjoy the ride.

5 out of 5 stars ONE OF THE BEST COMEDIES I HAVE SEEN!!.......2004-05-26

I remember seeing Jill Clayburgh in those wholesome romantic movies in the late 60s/early 70s. Boy, is this one different! The language would make a gang member blush! The scene when she wears the sex outfit, while answering the door, may be the funniest thing I have ever seen: I laugh my ass off!! Get this one!

5 out of 5 stars Funny...Sad....Honest............2004-04-15

I'm very glad I found this film. But I almost didn't watch it because of the terrible song that accompanies the opening titles - a song that is totally out of synch with the style and mood of the rest of the film. And what a wonderful film it is. My wife and I have both been divorced twice and we sat nodding our heads throughout the film at its accuracy and honesty in dealing with tentative "never again" relationships. The performances by Jeffrey Tambor and Jill Clayburgh are terrific. Anyone who only knows Tambor from The Larry Sanders Show will be amazed by his subtlety and depth. The script and direction are near perfect - the dialogue is people talking like real people (albeit very witty real people). The film successfully blends great comic moments with honest emotions and human behavior. Highly recommended for anyone who has ever had a relationship break up or fall apart (that's pretty much all of us, isn't it?). The film offers hope without sugar-coated optimism. More importantly, it is also highly entertaining. I think I'll go watch it again...but with the sound off for the opening credits!

5 out of 5 stars Funny, warm, silly, straight forward and warm.......2004-04-05

And if that doesnt cover it I dont know what will. Jill is great as usual.. they are all wonderful and what is the best thing of all is its not about teenagers. No killings, terminating or exterminating. Its not light - its intense without being anything about right on in feelings as well as well acted! Enjoy it!!We did.

1 out of 5 stars Vulgar.......2004-01-25

I an not a prude but I watched this movie after it was recommended by a friend. I watches this movie with a pretty liberal girlfriend and we both found it to be extremely vulgar and not even funny, with the exception of the fist scene. And the language was ridiculous and gross! YUK!

4 out of 5 stars Not ready for the nursing home.......2003-04-22

The editorial from the Back Cover sums up th basic plot for this well done movie. Although there are five eldery men in the nursing home, Bruno, played by Jorge Galvan is the main character. He is a sentimental sort who has a special place in his heart for Rosita. Rosita is an aged singer in the nursing home who sang with Bruno as he played the piano. Rosita dies and her death is the impetus for the story line to develop. It seems Rosita wanted her ashes delivered to Tijuana for a final resting place and Bruno wants to make her wish come true. He escapes on a stolen maintenance workers bike from the nursing home and the adventure begins. He goes looking for Margarita who is supposed to take the ashes. He hunts her down to her work which is a cabaret and more fun develops in the story. She dreams of Australia and following an old lover. The other gentlemen escape after seeing a most wanted image of Bruno on TV. They hook up with Bruno and then they really get involved with the wrong people. They are given new instrument cases which prove to have more than instruments inside. In the end all ends well and dreams are achieved and new ambitions realized. It is a good movie with a bit of the flavor of the American movies about old guys with Walter Mathau and Jack Lemmon. Incidently ,this movie was the vehicle for a Best Actor for Jorge Galvan(also featured in the "Fibra Optica" and "El Pais Donde Pasa Nada") and Leticia Huijara for Best Actress in the Mexican Oscar equivalent Ariel. Recommended for a light hearted look at aging and resisting societies barriers. The antics of these old guys will surely make you laugh and that alone is priceless.

4 out of 5 stars Time Heals Old Wounds.......2006-10-09

This is really not a bad James Bond film. It has Sean Connery. He's an older Bond and he may walk through many of the scenes in this film, but it is still Sean Connery as James Bond. It is not part of the Bond franchise and is a bit of a maverick but who really cares at his point. From a cinematic point of view, the script could have been a little tighter and the score should have and still can be revamped. I would have to say that certain portions of the score really hurt this film.

Oustanding performances by Klaus Maria Brandauer (OUT OF AFRICA) as Maximilian Largo, Max von Sydow (THE GREATEST STORY EVER TOLD) as Ernst Stavro Blofeld, Barbara Carrera as Fatima Blush, Kim Basinger as Domino Petachi, Bernie Casey (GUNS OF THE MAGNIFICENT SEVEN) as Felix Leiter, Alec McCowen (Hitchcock's FRENZY) as Q 'Algy' Algernon, Edward Fox (FORCE 10 FROM NAVARONE) as M, and Valerie Leon (THE SPY WHO LOVED ME).
