Although not made as a TV movie of the week, it may as well have been. Molly Ringwald plays an industrious teen headed for college who finds herself pregnant and heading toward disaster in this trite morality play. She pouts and cries a lot; she tries to make everything better. She can't. Things get worse, but she just bounces back. To be fair, this does delve into serious issues. Also, it was produced at a time when most teen movies were either lightweight vehicles by John Hughes or gory slasher flicks. It just feels too contrived, and too glossy, to be taken seriously. This sentiment is underscored when Ringwald and her young hubby seem to be making it as a couple, which is hardly the reality of most teen marriages. --Rochelle O'Gorman

5 out of 5 stars The Greatsest Movie Ever.......2007-07-03

I love the drama between two people that are the same age as me. I am currently going through the same bad time witm my boyfriend. I hope we are able to overcome the fights and money problems like them. It openned my eyes and I just loved this movie.

2 out of 5 stars "So You've Ruined Your Life" was too brutal a title.......2007-05-24

Molly Ringwald attempted to transfer from teen dramedies to lighter dramas in her last years and projects under John Hughes. Here was one that they attempted to teach others a lesson about teen pregnancy, but it didn't pay off as intended.

Molly plays Darcy, a strait laced high school student who is concerned with her grades and school activities. She is going out with a guy named Stan, who is also a nice, stable guy from a good family and equally as dedicated and strait laced. They start, naturally, having sex (how about that hoaky scene in the rain under a tree?), and Darcy gets pregnant. What to do now? Darcy's bitter, divorced mother says to get an abortion because she was abandoned by Darcy's father. Stan's family, being a loud Italian / Catholic clan, says to give it up for adoption. Then, Darcy, afraid of the procedure, backs out of the abortion and she and Stan decide to marry and keep the baby. Their families turn their backs on them, they get minimum wage jobs, drop out of high school, and it all, naturally, falls apart.

It's a sad tale, to be sure, and a common one. But, I would suspect that this movie would have a whole different spin if it was a little more realistic. There is a sense that these two did really love each other, and she did not intentionally get pregnant to trap him. (I wish I had a nickle for everytime I have seen that happen.) The white teenage girl who becomes pregnant is most likely to be living in a trailer park, while most of the black teenage girls are living in slums. The baby's daddy is usually no where to be found, not even caring enough to call the kid on his/her birthday. Mommy's on Medicaid, the baby's born with some defect because Mommy didn't get the right prenatal care, Mommy starts popping pills and smoking stuff. They did a good job of showing how both parents become frazzled when having to deal with dirty diapers, paying the bills, and the crying baby. But, I doubt that Daddy would have stuck around as long as he did. He would have bailed a long time ago.

And how about that ending? Stan realizes his pig behavior was wrong, cleans up, and begs Darcy's forgiveness. She graduates from high school, and there is a hope at the end that things will work out for them as they get back together.

I'm an optimist, really I am. I want to believe that things will work out, but a person has to work hard for what they want. And all kinds of things in life are hard, marriage/family being one of them. If it was easy, everyone would do it. Making babies is easy, but being a parent and maintaining a marriage is hard work. Not everyone is ready, not everyone is responsible, and not everyone should do it at all. We have to be willing to work to make things work, and you often times can't get the other person to see eye to eye with you. They quit on you. And you become bitter and angry because you felt that you carried the weight of the others. What a mess.

So the message here is, kids, "Don't do it". But, kids will do it anyway despite the wrath of their parents and community outrage. So put condoms in school, and tell kids to use them. Don't like that, parents? Well, you better get over it.

4 out of 5 stars Cheesy but great 80s movie!.......2007-05-12

This movie is one of those great cheesy 80s movies....perfect for a girls night in!

3 out of 5 stars Pleased with this purchase.......2007-02-17

I purchased this DVD because it was movie from my past that I watched and liked. My older sister got me interested in this movie when I was little and I would watch it then, not knowing or having mixed knowledge of some of the topics in the movie. Watching it now, the things that I was confused about makes sense. I like Molly Ringwald in this movie, and it was a different direction from her Brat Pack movies.

5 out of 5 stars Ringwald's a gem.......2007-01-10

This movie has it all. Comedy, drama, real-life situations, family disfunction, family cohesiveness, growing up before your time, and the spunk of youth. Molly Ringwald is thoroughly entertaining in this role, and all the actors are a well-casted ensemble. I would definitely recommend this to anyone who is a fan of teenage angst, or Molly Ringwald.

Product Description

When the leading lady of a Broadway musical breaks her ankle, she is replaced by a young unknown actress, who becomes the star of the show.

Format: DVD MOVIE

Amazon.com essential video

Set during the depression, this is the granddaddy of backstage musicals in which the understudy finally gets a chance to shine. It may seem a little cliché now, but in 1933 this was hot stuff. All that behind-the-scenes atmosphere feels very genuine, and the script is more acerbic than you might expect.

A sickly Julian Marsh (Warner Baxter) puts his all into what may be his last show, only to face a disaster when leading lady Dorothy Brock (Bebe Daniels) sprains her ankle. Thank heavens for ingenue Peggy Sawyer (Ruby Keeler), who steps in at the last minute. The vivacious soundtrack includes "Shuffle off to Buffalo," and the still-catchy title tune. Best of all are those extravagant, kaleidoscopic dance numbers by Busby Berkeley, then in his prime. --Rochelle O'Gorman

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars The naughty, gaudy, bawdy, tawdry 42nd Street--with Busby Berkeley's sensational Depression-lifting numbers!!!.......2007-05-18

42nd Street remains of the great classic musicals to this day. As Amazon correctly notes, this movie was blazing hot stuff at the time it was released; but the storyline makes this movie great entertainment even in these times. The plot moves along at a good pace and the action holds your attention rather well. I enjoyed it and I can easily tell you why.

The movie begins with a new stage show about to be cast by director Julian Marsh (Warner Baxter) because his bosses Jones and Barry think they can squeeze out another hit show despite the Great Depression putting a damper on everyone's bank accounts. Julian assembles his team of troupers including Bebe Daniels as the huge Broadway star Dorothy Brock; Ruby Keeler playing Peggy Sawyer, the chorus girl who just barely makes it into the show and actor Billy Lawler who is played very ably by Dick Powell. You should also look for Ginger Rogers in an early screen appearance as chorus line girl "Anytime" Annie and Guy Kibbee plays Abner Dillon, the wealthy old man who is funding the show on the condition that Dorothy Brock, his love interest, stars in the show.

Julian begins to run his troupe to death and it seems he never is satisfied with their work; to add some drama to his role Julian is under doctor's orders to abstain from theater work for health reasons. Julian, however, goes ahead and runs the show as the director anyway. Dorothy Brock also begins to encounter trouble as stuffy old man Abner Dillon wants more and more romantic time with her; but what Dorothy truly wants is to spend time with the real love of her life, Pat Denning (George Brent). Ruby tries to hang in during Julian's grueling rehearsals; she almost doesn't make it but she ultimately survives the torture.

Of course, despite the real movie--which consists of the song and dance numbers--you get a fair amount of suspense to hold your attention. Will Dorothy stay true to Abner so that her career can go forward to even new heights? Will Dorothy go back to Pat Denning, her true love, instead? What happens when for unforeseen circumstances develop and Peggy Sawyer must perform the lead in the show--with a mere five hours advance notice? Can Peggy pull that off? Can Julian direct the show without losing his health altogether? Watch the film and find out as you enjoy it--no spoilers here, folks! SMILE

Then there are the song and dance numbers. I loved all of them. The musical arrangements by Harry Warren glisten as true gold ever could. You get a great duet for "I'm Young And Healthy;" and there's the classic "Shuffle Off To Buffalo." Of course we can't forget the show stopping "42nd Street" either. Excellent! The choreography really shines during these musical numbers with great aerial views of the cast on stage and the dancing couldn't be better. Great!

The DVD comes with a few extras; and they also were fascinating to watch. I liked the segment about Harry Warren with him playing piano while his friends sing along; and the featurette entitled A Trip Through A Hollywood Studio fascinates me, too. The Hollywood newsreel is a rare treat!

Overall, fans of musicals from the Great Depression era and the golden age of Hollywood will cherish this classic musical. The actors work so hard; and it shows in their highly convincing acting. People who enjoy the music of Harry Warren will be delighted with this movie; and the Busby Berkeley dance numbers reflect his genius as they always did.

May you get this movie and enjoy it as much as I did! Great job, everyone!!!

4 out of 5 stars Great film, poor extras .......2007-02-03

There have been so many excellent reviews of this landmark film that there is not much to add so here are a few observations about the film and the extras:

- The film has a dark and sombre mood which is unexpected and surprising. The backstage glimpses have a harshness and the comedy is very sharp and venal - nothing light and frothy here.
- Warner Baxter and Bebe Daniels had at least 10 years experience behind them when they made the film and their performances have great depth. Baxter portrays a very sick man and Daniels captures the prospect of being over the hill movingly.
- Ruby Keeler's ingenuousness maybe real but the casting makes her perfect here. Never was such blank innocence so convincing which explains why her reviews at the time were so good. It was only as her career progressed that her limitations became obvious, although she always improved. Her tap dancing is a legacy of a different style from heavy shoes and timber floored speakeasies when she really had "to put 'em down" to be heard. Later in the decade, her tap lightened up.
- Dick Powell is also perfectly cast and his devilish way with the lyrics of "Young and Healthy" suggest an active libido. He is underrated.

The print of the film is excellent but Warner's seemed to have messed up the extra features. The documentary on this film appears on the DVD of "Goldiggers of 1933" with a short on the promotion of the film when Warner's hired a train, the 42nd Street Special, to cross America to reach Washington for President Roosevelt's birthday. What remains is a poor short film on Harry Warren, who wrote the songs, and other shorts promoting Warner Brothers which in fact were made 2 years later and refer to other musicals. It is all a bit confusing.

Unless you purchase this DVD as part of the Busby Berkeley set, the DVD is only OK value.

5 out of 5 stars "WHAT A MOVIE ! ".......2006-10-28

"This was one innovative, exciting, pleasurable, and very entertaining
movie!"

Innovative in the sense that at the beginning.....the main actresses and actors are shown in large individual photos accompanied by very
beautiful background music composed by Harry Warren.
The Plot was exciting and entertaining since it concerned and developed
the real problems intrinsic to producing, developing, and directing a
winning musical/dancing/acting/and choreographed ensemble!
The "Kingpins"in bringing this whole thing to reality were:
Warner Baxter....Director/Slavedriver
Busby Berkeley...Master Choreographer/Director
Bebe Daniels.....terrific Singer...Actress...Dancer
Prominent Cast Members...Ruby Keeler..Ginger Rogers..Dick Powell
...and others listed in opening credits!
Harry Warren /Al Dubin...provided music and lyrics for:
" 42nd St"..."Young and Healthy".."Shuffle
off to Buffalo".."You're Getting To Be A Habit
With Me!"

"Chorus Girls" were extremely talented ladies!....they had to
be... since this was 1933 and the country was
in a big Depression! Jobs were scarcer than "Hen's
Teeth!" 5,000 fully experienced and talented
ladies tried out for the Chorus Girl positions...only 200 or 4% survived!
A good bit of pleasure can be derived from the movie...not just as you see it.....but afterwards!
The probability is that you'll be humming, whistling, or even singing
some of the tunes after seeing this movie.
The one song that lends itself especially to the above symptoms is:
"You're Getting to be a Habit with me!" Personally...I think this is one of the best songs that I've heard in a long time.!
It's a real blessing that this 73 year old movie can now be viewed on
DVD with exacting clarity and superior sound!

If it were not for the superior upgrading in casting, music, Choreography, and plot of the movie......the title of this Review would be:......................."What Movie?"
rather than:
"WHAT A MOVIE!"

5 out of 5 stars DICK POWELL AND RUBY KEELER!!.......2006-09-10

42nd Street is one of the greatest movies of all time. It has been 7 months since I first watched it, and while some people would say that I am WAY too young to be interested in classics (people have told me that I should be watching stuff like the Princess Diaries) I have ALWAYS found stuff like Footlight Parade more interesting, and instead of swooning over Brad Pitt or whovever is considered a hot male star these days, I find myself swooning over old-timey actors like Robert Taylor or Rudolph Valentino. So i really LOVE old movies, even silents from the earliest days, like Intolerance. I had never seen any Busby Berkeley pictures before I bought the collection (which is AWESOME) So 42nd Street was new to me. I was ASTOUNDED by the musical numbers. That guy was a genius! And the cast! I recognized Bebe Daniels, from her silents, and I think she was AMAZING in this. Didn't know she could dance or sing! I also recognized Warner Baxter form his slents, and he was AMAZING too! He looked much older than I'd seen him before, though. I loved the Dubin/Warren music, which is PURE 30s. Good memorablehits like You're Getting to be a Halbit With Me and Young and Healthy. Dick Powell and Ruby Keeler are just SO CUTE TOGETHER!! I EVEN LIKE THEM BETTER THAN ASTAIRE AND RODGERS!! I have seen almost all their movies, except for Colleen and Shipmates Forever. If you are a Powell/Keeler fan, you'll love 42nd Street. Oooh, and the comedy is very cliche, but put over well. This keep caseDVD is nice, and the picture is clear, but there aren't many extras. The 42nd Street dcumentary is on the Gold Diggers of 1933 DVD. So I reccomend you buy the whole Busby Berkeley Collecion instead of the one DVD. I am not going to mention the plot, so just check out the summary. Plus, in 1933, this is the musical that made everyone like musicals again, beacuse they weren't poular at that time until 42nd Street came along. Oh, and Ruby Keeler is heavy footed, and she did better in her later films. She is still a teriffic dancer, although she can't copare to Eleanor Powell. (If you don't know who Eleanor Powell is you've been living under a rock.) Well, this is a very good movie, and the essential musical. Here are some other movies that you should like if you like old muicals: Footlight Parade, Dames, Colleen, The Broadway Melody, Born to Dance, Honolulu, Broadway Melody of 1940, Rio Rita, Dixiana, Top Hat, Flying Down to Rio, Roman Scandals, Whoopee!, Go Into Your Dance, Take a Chance(very good), Down Argentine Way, Wonder Bar, Go Into Your Dance, Ziegfeld Follies, Boldie of the Follies, and my PERSONAL FAVRITE MOVIE OF ALL TIME......the BROADWAY MELODY OF 1936!!! Starring Robert Taylor, Jack Benny, Eleanor Powell, June Knight, Una Merkel, Nick Long Jr., Sid Silvers, Buddy Ebsen, Vilma Ebsen, and others. IT THE BEEEESSSSTTT!!! YOU HAVE GOTTA SEE THE I'VE GOT A FEELN' YOU'RE FOOLIN MUISCAL NUMBER! HLOORAY FOR JUNE KNIGHT AND ROBERT TAYLOR!! AHHH-MAZING!!!

5 out of 5 stars Nostalgia at its best, with great songs by Harry Warren and Al Dubin.......2006-07-11

42nd Street is one of my favorite movies. It's the granddaddy of "put on a musical" musicals, and if it seems full of cliches now it's because cliches have to start somewhere. They weren't cliches when 42nd Street opened. When young Peggy Sawyer (Ruby Keeler) has to take the place of the star, gets a pep talk from Julian Marsh (Warner Baxter) and then dances from the wings into the big production number of Shuffle Off to Buffalo...well, is there any doubt that Peggy is going to come back a star? (Even if Marsh's talk is enough to scare the tap shoes off Fred Astaire, much less little Peggy Sawyer. "Sawyer, you listen to me, and you listen hard. Two hundred people, two hundred jobs, two hundred thousand dollars, five weeks of grind and blood and sweat depend upon you. It's the lives of all these people who've worked with you. You've got to go on, and you've got to give and give and give. They've got to like you. Got to. Do you understand? You can't fall down. You can't because your future's in it, my future and everything all of us have is staked on you. All right, now I'm through, but you keep your feet on the ground and your head on those shoulders of yours and go out, and Sawyer, you're going out a youngster but you've got to come back a star!")

The story is endearing because we've seen it so many times. The movie is still so fresh, so good and so entertaining, however, because of the songs, the actors and Busby Berkeley's turn-tables, disappearing benches, moving cameras and high-kicking chorus girls. I can watch many times over the musical numbers (songs by Harry Warren and Al Dubin) performed by a young, energetic and perfectly confident Dick Powell (I'm Young and Healthy), Una Merkel and Ginger Rogers, Ruby Keeler and Clarence Nordstrom (Shuffle Off to Buffalo), the big 42nd Street extravaganza with Ruby Keeler and half the population of New York City, and a great song that still holds its own, You're Getting to Be a Habit With Me (sung by Bebe Daniels).

Ruby Keeler was such a long shot for actual stardom. She couldn't act. She sang well but without much emotion. Her tap dancing was all elbows and thumping feet. Yet she was so innocent and earnest you just can't help rooting for her. When Warner Baxter gives his impassioned pep talk to Keeler as Peggy Sawyer, he is all intensity, driving home just how important it is for Sawyer to succeed. Keeler is facing him with a pleasant, utterly emotionless expression on her face. Try watching the scene but focus on Keeler, not Baxter. Her lack of expression is so incongruous it's absolutely endearing. Perhaps that's why she was such a success. She might be a klutz like us, but she's going to give it her all in front of an audience, something most of us wouldn't have the courage to try.

One of the delights of the musical numbers is watching Una Merkel and Ginger Rogers in an upper birth, Merkel eating a banana and Rogers an apple, giving the other side of the story of Shuffle off to Buffalo. First we watch Keeler and Nordstrom (unbilled and with an odd vibrato):

I'll go home and pack my panties
You go home and get your scanties
And away we'll go.
Off we're gonna shuffle,
Shuffle off to Buffalo.
To Niagara in a sleeper
There's no honeymoon that's cheaper
And the train goes slow.
Off we're gonna shuffle,
Shuffle Off to Buffalo.

But then Merkel and Rogers give their point of view between bites of banana and apple:

Matrimony is baloney,
She'll be wanting alimony,
In a year of so.
Still they go and shuffle,
Shuffle off to Buffalo.
When she knows as much as we know
She'll be on her way to Reno
While he still has dough.
She'll give him the Shuffle
When they're back from Buffalo.

The movie is filled with similar wise-cracking attitude. And if you're into drugs or love or just exceptionally well-written songs, you cant beat You're Getting to Be a Habit With Me:

Every kiss, every hug,
Seems to act just like a drug.
You're getting to be a habit with me.
Let me stay in your arms,
I'm addicted to your charms.
You're getting to be a habit with me.
I used to think your love was something
That I could take or leave alone.
But now I couldn't do without my supply.
I need you for my own.
Oh I can't break away, I must have you every day,
As regularly as coffee or tea.
You've got me in your clutches and I can't get free,
You're getting to be a habit with me.

With 42nd Street at least, nostalgia is everything it's said to be.

The DVD transfer is excellent. There are several extras including a short vintage feature on composer Harry Warren.

5 out of 5 stars Much More Than I Expected.......2007-03-05

I stumbled across "The Sea Wolves" in the Bargain Bin at Walmart in VHS before I found it at Amazon on DVD. I had just finished viewing the complete James Bond set, and I noticed that this title starred Roger Moore, in addition to Gregory Peck, David Niven, Patrick Macnee, and Trevor Howard. (And a multitude of great character actors.) So, I picked it up, and I'm glad I did.

The story is, in brief, about a WWII commando mission pulled off by a bunch of Boer War and WWI veterans who were working in British India in "essential' non-military jobs, keeping chemical plants and factories going to provide war materiel for the Allied effort. Their jobs are important, safe, and frustrating since they feel that they are not 'doing their part' in the war. The mission they accept is critical, dangerous, and very complicated because of the politics of 'Neutrality" practiced by non-combative countries like Portugal. Three German freighters have been 'interned' in the neutral Portuguese port of Goa, and they are part of a spy network sending information to German U-Boats that then sink Allied cargo ships in the Indian Ocean. That the "ragtag band of warriors" will succeed is self evident from the beginning, but HOW they succeed is what makes this a good story. The "HOW" involves digging out German spies, bedroom murders, bribery of 'neutral' politicians, and sexual intrigue ending in murder.

Gregory Peck plays the confident, strong leader tasked with making it happen. Roger Moore plays the somewhat 'sleazy' agent who does whatever has to be done to succeed, while managing to bed 'Mata Hari' in the process. And David Niven plays the character he always seems to play, the war weary, highly competent older character who is always comes through in the end. Patrick Macnee plays an enigmatic explosives expert who is tasked with making, or breaking, the mission in the end.

What sets this film apart is that it is based on a true story; a saga that came to light as a result of the British version of the "Freedom of Information Act" that released extensive records of World War II missions in the late 60's and early 70's. It combines inspiring heroics, perfectly placed humor, and an exciting plot with believable characters and excellent casting to give us an enjoyable and engaging movie. I loved every minute, as I seem to in every movie I review! (It might be that I don't make it all the way through the 'stinkers'!)

When this movie was made (In 1980), Gregory Peck was relatively late in his career, and he was well cast as the mission commander. Roger Moore, in the middle of his James Bond run, carried the Bond 'charisma' over into this role. David Niven was getting up there in age, and it was evident that he strained to complete the film. (A tribute to his long history of professionalism) However, it is precisely the nature of the cast that made it one of my favorites.

Since the early 90's, we have been inundated with films about various Arab-Isreali conflicts, Kosovo, The Gulf Wars, and even flashbacks of Viet Nam. What differentiates "The Sea Wolves" is that this is one of the last of the 'genre' that included actors of the age who not only experienced the reality of war (Having served with distinction in WWII and Korea) but also made no bones about the pride and patriotism that motivated them to serve. The Sea Wolves doesn't showcase 'chicken' actors like George Clooney who put on a uniform and pretend to play soldier and then feel qualified to interject their opinions about war and politics to anybody unfortunate to get in the way of their tirades. The film showcases men who lived through the hell of real war, did their best, and then got on with their lives.

This is not meant to be a political statement, but the movie shows a multitude of the faces of war; some exciting, some horrifying, and some just necessary. Watch it if you can.

3 out of 5 stars Could Have Been Better!.......2006-10-08

This is a decent movie with some high profile lead actors. However, Barbara Kellerman does not impress as the female lead. Her acting is wooden, expressionless, and amateurish in my opinion. I can't believe they couldn't have done better.
One aspect that knocks a star off of my rating is the fact that they didn't bother to give the actors haircuts that were appropriate to the WWII period. Also, the clothing is not period-accurate as well. In fact, you have to keep reminding yourself this is supposed to be in the 40's rather than 1980! This does detract quite a bit, and there are other odds and ends that show the lack of detail given to this picture. Too bad, since the top-name actors and interesting, true-to-life plot make this a worthwhile movie otherwise!

5 out of 5 stars Excellent and TRUE Last Hurrah for The Light Horse!.......2005-10-01

I first saw this film on HBO. I tuned in because two long-time favourites (Roger Moore & Patrick Macnee) were listed. I watched it over several times, bought it on VHS, and now own it on DVD.

This is based on a true event in WWII, when the British were losing cargo to a U-Boat pack in the Indian Ocean. Since the problem stemmed from the neutral Portugese port of Goa, nothing 'official' could be done. The Calcutta Light Horse, a group of retired British military, are recruited to do the impossible, and pulled it off. The event was declassified in 1980, and the film was made. Most of the cast is portraying actual persons involved, as shown in the end credits.

To play the 'past prime' Light Horse members, the film recruited major names: David Niven, Trevor Howard, Kenneth Griffith, Morgan Sheppard, Patrick Allen, Glyn Houston, and a cadre of others you will know. The "thin on top, thick in the middle" troops are led by professional soldiers Gregory Peck, Roger Moore, and Patrick Macnee. Peck plays Col. Lewis Pugh, a colonel whose family was in Coventry when it was plastered by the Luftwaffe. Moore plays Capt. Gavin Stewart, a bit of a playboy who falls for local lovely spy Barbara Kellerman. Macnee plays Major "Yogi" Crossley, the explosives expert fond of reading the paper while standing on his head. All cast members are well up to the task. Most memorable of the supporting cast is Wilton who is charged with nursing the engines of their rather creaky craft. When told he has to stay on the ship rather than going aboard the target vessel, Wilton says: "Request permission to say, 'S--t' sir."

The fun is watching these men train for the mission; the suspense is watching them perform it. To a man, the whole Light Horse volunteered for the mission, despite knowing there was no pay, recognition, medals, or any form of compensation. With only one fatality, despite overwhelming odds and several casualties, they manage.

The only flaw of the film, for me, is Peck's British accent which is overdone when present and tends to fade in and out. Director Andrew McLaglen should have dispensed with it entirely. (MacLaglen also directed Moore in 'fflokes,' another offbeat role for The Saint whose name was Bond.)

Action, humour, romance, suspense - all based on a true story - this one has it all, including a title & credit sequences of the actual event.

4 out of 5 stars The Older Guys have the Right Stuff.......2005-04-28

This is by no means an action packed war movie. Instead, it is about a group of retirees from the Calcutta Light Horse, a regiment from India, who are recruited to a covert operation to sink German ships passing information to U boats in violation of neutrality. The regiment is one that had not seen action since the Boer War at the turn of the century; now they are called to the colors again during WWII. The subtitle, "Last Charge of the Calcutta Lighthorse", conjures up a mental image for me of a bunch of guys on horses charging ships. That is not what happens. They take the James Bond route instead.

The geriatric commandos are eager to serve and do manage to accomplish their mission. They do encounter setbacks and problems and that is where the movie shines. They are assisted in their mission by Gregory Peck and Roger Moore, two people who are trained in the world of clandestine operations. It sounds silly but it works well.

This is a fun movie and worth subsequent viewings.

5 out of 5 stars they don't make them like this now..........2005-04-05

I bought this used in a video store today and the tape freezed up on me 2/3 of the way thru the movie. I am now ordering the DVD on Amazon because I opened (read: broke open) the videotape up in a futile attempt to fix the problem and see the end of the film tonight because I was so enthralled by the story. Drat, I couldn't fix it.

Yes, the story builds a bit slow, but this is a really interesting story based on a true WWII attack. Without giving away the plot, it is highly believable that a minor character, an Indian national was working with the Nazis against the British because he saw this as a way to get independence for India - and/or vent his hatred of Britian. What the Nazis would would have done to the dark skinned Indians had they won the war is another story. But even if you don't know that piece of history, you can get the story (ok, you know it now). The story flows. I can't wait to see the ending and how all characters resolve their issues - as well as how the attack goes down.

4 out of 5 stars Waiting for this one.......2005-11-10

I had really waited for a movie on the great "Adam Clayton Powell" for years. When most politicians die there is a movie out on them right away....Not Powell, I had to wait for this one and it was worth waiting for. I followed the politics of Mr. Powel when I was quite young and was always impressed with his brillance and nerve to always speak out on things that lots of others were afraid to speak out on. I really enjoyed this movie and found the cast quite well assigned. If you have an historical section as a part of your collection, this is a must have. You won't find a whole lot of his actions and promotions in your average american history book. You'll need to put roles played by our folk in your own History Book. This is one of the chapters.

3 out of 5 stars historical black figure.......2004-11-09

The cover is deceptive. You would think the heterosexual embrace between Vanessa Williams and Harry Lennix is a sign that this is a Harlem Renaissance romance. It's not: this is about the life of Adam Clayton Powell, Jr.. It's a biopic. Williams' presence on the cover must have been based on her popularity and as a way to seduce apolitical viewers.

The history of 20th-century black leadership is rich: it doesn't just start and end with Martin and Malcolm. This movie shows that Powell came before Dr. King and had tensions with him. The idea that black leaders have tensions with each other, have strong connections with black churches, and are caught in sexual scandals will resonate with those who are thinking about the current scene in black leadership. The film shows Powell arguing with his famous father. Again, modern black leaders have heated father-son dynamics and any man who has similar tensions with his father or his son will be able to relate.

Harry Lennix is often cast as the bad guy. His roles in the "Matrix" and "Barbershop" sequels are examples. I think it has to do with his green eyes and cleft. Finally, he gets a lead role where he can use his sinister looks to gain sympathy with the audience. Powell was a wheeler-dealer, self-promoter, and womanizer. A sneaky, but sexy, man like Lennix was ideal for the role.

This movie shows how Powell threatened to accuse Dr. King and Bayard Rustin of being lovers if they didn't do what he wanted. First, I love that "Boycott" showed that Bayard Rustin, a black [...] man, played a critical role in the Civil Rights Movement. Second, I love how this movie shows the rampant homophobia thrust against him. I'm glad that movies are beginning to portray the triumphs and struggles of black [...] men and black lesbians. Though Powell is NO hero of mine, I enjoyed this flick.

The title points to an interesting fact. It's amazing to see a man who was elected Congressman speak in "daddy-oh", hep-cat, jazzy language. Like many black leaders, Powell rubbed elbows with white elites at the same time that he was familiar with the black vernacular and what we now call "keeping it real."

Adam Clayton Powell the fourth is a co-producer of this film. Thus, his heirs must have approved of the portrayal. I wish this DVD had subtitles. There are many blacks in Harlem, which Powell represented, that only speak Spanish or French and will miss out on this history because of this oversight. The journalist character who narrates the story has something in common with the description of Steve Buscemi in "Fargo."

I recommend this biopic strongly.

4 out of 5 stars Good bang for your buck.......2004-09-06

Five movies (and counting...) based on a song? This chapter focuses more on the bad deeds of the 'Wild Bunch' (as in Butch and Sundance) in the Wild West. Kenny Rogers has a very personal interest in the gang's activity which is not brought to light until near the end. Loni Anderson plays a madam at a house that includes Mariska Hargitay as one of the girls who also helps the Wild Bunch on their heists because the Pinkertons never expect a lady to be involved. Dixie Carter makes a brief appearance as a popular singer. There are a couple of good laughs and the story rolls right along, there is a heist on a train and a hanging. I do not usually like westerns, but I liked this movie (and got it in a Wal-mart bargain bin for less than half of Amazon's price).

Adapted from a Harold Robbins potboiler, The Betsy offers power struggles, incest, adultery, gold digging, and car racing. Laurence Olivier plays a ruthless but fallible auto tycoon with a tortured family history including a weakling son (Paul Rudd), a daughter-in-law he loves too much (Katharine Ross), a resentful grandson (Robert Duvall), and a devoted great-granddaughter (Kathleen Beller) to whom he bequeaths most of his fortune. In the midst of all these family squabbles is racing enthusiast Angelo Perino (a very young Tommy Lee Jones) whom the old man hires to build a revolutionary, ecologically advanced car which will be called The Betsy after his great-granddaughter. Angelo builds The Betsy (the car), seduces Betsy (the great-granddaughter), and even has a fling with Duvall's mistress, played by the haughty Lesley-Anne Down. In order to boil down Robbins's plot-heavy novel to 125 minutes, some of the connecting tissue has been lost. But Olivier is a grand old ham and Jones shows early on why he was destined to be a star. Lavishly produced, The Betsy has been formatted for the small screen, which doesn't allow us to fully enjoy the elaborate sets. But it's a chewy two hours of pulp, nonetheless. --Richard Natale

5 out of 5 stars Trashy and over the top, but oh so much fun.......2007-03-09

Besides disaster movies the 70's gave us the trashy all-star soap opera for the big screen (The Love Machine, Once Is Not Enough, The Greek Tycoon) and this slice of cheese. We get incest, rape, homosexuality, greed, murder, backstabbing, and lots on SEX AND NUDITY!!!! The plot is silly and the dialog is corny, but the actors seem to be having fun and it moves very fast and and does what these movies are suppose it do, Entertain! Turn your brain off, put the kids to bed(it's rated "R" for a reason), and curl up with someone you love and watch the rich treat each other like dirt!!! Enjoy

5 out of 5 stars The Betsy.......2007-01-04

The film is excellent quality considering its age.
It has not lost anything with the passage of time. The sets are rich and opulent, the acting terrific and so is the quality of the sound.
I saw this film about 25 years ago at the movies and enjoyed it just as much.

5 out of 5 stars glitzy.......2006-12-04

glitzy, trashy, brilliant. This movie is put together so well you are pulled in before you realize the plot is mostly soap opera drama. This was the first time I'd seen Tommy Lee in a movie. He is magnetic in this role.

5 out of 5 stars I liked it quite a bit .......2006-09-28

I always liked it. My son said it was flawed. That was so many years ago. I liked the story and I liked the actors. It kept me entertained flaws or no flaws. Tommy Lee Jones and Robert Duval are standouts. They got John Barry to write the music so it can't be all bad. My days are numbered. This was one of the first DVDs that my son bought. He just found it in that pile of rubble he keeps in his room. I asked him for years to play it for me. Now I am too tired and it doesn't seem all that important. He put it in the player but the images seem to have lost the magic. The first time I saw it there was magic. I remember that it had a good story. The kind of story I like to see when I go to the movies. Well Tommy Lee and Duvall are still plugging away. Maybe there is magic in the world after all.

They are as good as when they were made in the 80's. we sent to the U.S. for the dvd's as we couldn't get them in Australia. We have a dvd player that plays Zone 1 [U.S] as well as Zone 4[Aus]. Great family entertainment. Lots of action and fun. We want to get the other films in this series /I think there are 4 more. Lots of familiar faces in them too! You won't be dissapointed. Add them to your collection!

Released to mixed reviews in 1969, Castle Keep now qualifies as a potent allegory for the insanity of the Vietnam War. In that respect it belongs in the same category as better-known anti-war films of the period including Little Big Man and The Wild Bunch, and director Sydney Pollack (who scored his breakthrough hit later that year with They Shoot Horses, Don't They?) deftly straddles a stylistic line between old-school Hollywood and the emerging counterculture epitomized by Easy Rider. He also gets a memorably off-kilter performance from Burt Lancaster (who had been instrumental in launching Pollack's directorial career), the young-looking Tony Bill (who later became a successful producer-director), and especially Peter Falk, who would soon gain TV fame as Columbo. As American soldiers occupying a richly-appointed medieval castle in the Ardennes Forest near the end of World War II, they're a M*A*S*H-like bunch of military misfits (including Bruce Dern as a conscientious objector) engaged in a microcosm of occupational warfare as German troops draw closer. The ending is uncompromisingly bleak, reflecting the futility of Vietnam with long-lasting resonance. From a latter-day perspective, Castle Keep is a bold hybrid of large-scale WWII action and political statement, which may explain why such high-profile filmmakers as Steven Spielberg and Martin Scorsese campaigned for this glorious widescreen DVD after the earlier release of an inferior full-screen version. --Jeff Shannon

3 out of 5 stars I'm not sure what to think of this film........2006-06-24

Castle Keep is not exactley a normal war film infact I thought it was realy wierd and some parts just didn't fit in and didn't make any sense. The film plays out like a slow paced drama where some of the soldiers are talking about philisophical stuff and the meaning of life and blah blah ect, things don't get interesting untill the second half when the germans try to infiltrate the fortified castle the cast includes Peter Faulk, Burt Lancaster, Patrick O'Neal and some others. A group of American soldiers take over a very old castle as a stronghold, the castle is owned by an unworldly aristocrat whose major concern is for his priceless art collection which I thought was very strange. The film is a cross between a 1960's art film and war film thats why it has these sureal and bizzare scenes like the one in the brothel that has weird carnival music playing in the background. Despite the unknown status of this film it has been praised by other directors and has become a sort of anti-war film for the vietnam era cause of its messages which is not exactely clear, the film had some slightly boring scenes in it but it does make up for it during the end which you'll just have to see what happens I'm not going to spoil it, I'm not saying that it was bad cause some parts were realy good and interesting. The film overall was average I would give it 3.5/5 stars if your looking for a different and strange ww2 film then this might be what your looking for.

1 out of 5 stars Not even as a night-light...........2006-04-11

And I thought `Catch-22' was the worst WWII movie ever made.

At least the source of that one - Joseph Heller's best selling novel - is funny and brilliant. Maybe William Eastlake's CASTLE KEEP is a great novel, too. I'll never know, and after watching director Sydney Pollack's take on it I'm none to anxious to hunt it down. A group of American soldiers, led by eye patched Major Abraham Falconer (Burt Lancaster) decamp in a medieval castle that stands between the advancing Germans and Bastogne. The castle is the residence of the Count of Malorais and Therese, a winsome lass with a wandering eye, and contains a Louvre's worth of art.

Having established a promising plot the movie promptly abandons it and spends nine-tenths of its remaining time standing around talking. Oh, Major Burt makes a heavy move on Therese, Captain Patrick O'Neal moons over the art, the enlisted men spend some time in a cat house in town and, inexplicably, Sergeant Peter Falk takes up residence with a widowed baker's wife. And wild-eyed Bruce Dern, with choir, pops into the movie every now and then as a hymn singing conscientious objector. But most of the time it's just tedious, pretentious, impenetrable talk. For instance, at one point Therese and the Count share this exchange - "They planned this war because there was something they hadn't yet smashed." "Who are we, Henri?" "We are the keepers."

I think CASTLE KEEP is supposed to be a serio-comic response to Vietnam, but this absurd depiction of the futility of war is subverted by its ponderous arrogance and leaden pacing. Static and deathly boring.

5 out of 5 stars Finder's Keeper.......2006-03-08

In the pantheon of Great War movie such as "Patton" and "The Sand Pebbles" I rank "Castle Keep" right along with them. Castle Keep starts off with a sense of "Look out, folks, this is uncommon rabbit hole." And it is. But this isn't an ordinary WWII war movie as the narrator of the movies starts: "Eight walking wounded chanced upon a castle..." Its premise is uncommon: its art and history vs. theory and practice. Who will be the victor? Can there be a victory? Almost immediately I'm reminded of the bombing of Dresden. Does that metaphor carry any weight in the film? Whether it does or not it's still a weighty film. It's a film about misfits, about baker's dozen and The Lost Boys. About make-shift prophets and a buffalo riding on a horse. It's about catching your breath and the Red Queen's whores. For these weary soldiers they suddenly find themselves in a world of shell shock and storybook fantasy. But the business of killing persists. With the Germens reaching and breaching the walls of Castle Keep it's every man and connoisseur for himself. It's a battle that every players of this movie can't afford to lose regardless of the outcome, of motive. Above all one of the soldiers is a writer. From the lowly troop to the top major they all request one thing from him: write the truth. When the ashes of war settles the storyteller alway rises. Without storytellers there are no war stories. Oh, yeah, there's the Countess of the castle. You'll going to have to see this movie to know more about her. After viewing this movie I think I'm going to read the book.

5 out of 5 stars Once upon a time ..........2006-02-23

If you're expecting a traditional WWII action film, you may well be puzzled or put off by this film, which completely upends the idea of traditional heroism ... yet without disparaging it, either, which is no mean feat. Clearly an allegorical, symbolic film that speaks to Vietnam as much as to WWII, deliberately & gleefully anachronistic, it remains timely to this day. As long as there are wars, the absurdity, black humor, destruction & loss depicted here will remain relevant. In a way, it revises a notable statement from Vietnam & asks, "Will it become necessary to destroy civilization in order to save it?"

It's a visually stunning film, thankfully released in widescreen at last, which it needs & deserves. There's a fairy tale quality to many of the shots, accentuated by the then-contemporary pop music soundtrack by Michel Legrand, very Swingle Singers at times, always haunting. Yet other scenes have a surreal, garishly surreal quality to them. And the battle scenes are brutally realistic & bloody, a harsh & effective counterpoint to the earlier fairy tale quality.

The ensemble cast is wonderful, with Burt Lancaster rightfully leading the pack. He's a stolid, realistic, undeniably brave man -- and short-sighted for that very reason, seeing only the mission, willing to sacrifice everything to fulfill it. Yet what other sort of man would be able to go on fighting an implacable enemy? That's one of the things I especially like about this film: it asks difficult questions & doesn't take the easy way out by unfairly demonizing one viewpoint.

The rest of the cast is equally good, from Al Freeman's Ishmael-like novelist ("And I alone am escaped to tell thee"), to Patrick O'Neal's tortured, sensitive art historian, so desperate to preserve the endangered beauties of the castle, to Peter Falk's earthy sergeant, who would rather bake bread (the staff of life) rather than bring more death to the world. Yet in the end, death will inevitably overtake all but one of them.

The script is a writer's delight, filled with dark jokes, poignant reveries, wicked one-liners. It's a literate script, from a more literate time, and well worth hearing more than once. Again, this is a film that's meant to be fully experienced in the viewing & then thought about & discussed at length afterwards. It's a welcome addition to the film collection of any discerning viewer. Most highly recommended!

Although it blithely rewrites the history of a legendary race horse, The Story of Seabiscuit is still an appealing example of Technicolor entertainment from Hollywood's studio system. It wasn't unusual for contract players (in this case Shirley Temple, Barry Fitzg
