There are many who don't like to read or who don't have the time. So this Dvd is great for those who are on a spiritual path with one foot still stuck in the rat race. This dvd gives excellent examples of synchronicity, and a wonderful visual example of energy fields and how we can amplify our energy with others. It is good for parents who are introducing their children to the world of spirituality.

What if a Simple Plot and Poor Acting Are in the Same Movie?.......2007-08-28

Have you ever seen a movie with a plot so transparent that you can predict several scenes out? Do you enjoy films performed by people that make you long for the relatively high quality acting of 1980's television shows like the "A-Team"? If so, then this movie is for you.

Serioulsy, I would suggest that if you want to explore other exotic cultures and spirituality, that you save your money for a trip to South America instead of purchasing this film.

I have to say I was quite disappointed with this film. It was very, very different to the book. It was quite shallow and didn't go into any of the prophecies with any degree of depth. If you hadn't read the book you couldn't possibly understand the message. Overall, very disappointing. Some lovely scenery at times though.

I like the story very much. If I hadn't read the book first might have not watched the hole movie. I felt the movie was a little vague in developing the story. It moved a little fast and would be easy to miss what was happing. I did like it. I am goimg to watch it again. The message is uplifting for a change.

Although it could have been twice as long, this double-DVD set effectively captures over three hours of highlights from one of the most comprehensive and diverse collection of guitarists ever assembled for a single event. Recorded over three days in June of 2004 to benefit Eric Clapton's Crossroads Center in Antigua (as do the sales of this set), the show is not surprisingly heavy on the rootsy blues and country that comprise Clapton's primary inspirations. But it also includes folk (James Taylor), gospel (Robert Randolph & the Family Band), fret-shredding rockers (Steve Vai who delivers a dazzling performance), jazz (John McLaughlin), and, most interestingly, Indian classical music (a stunning piece from Vishwa Mohan Bhatt).

Most compelling are the rare and sometimes unusual collaborations. Joe Walsh and Taylor clown around on "Steamroller Blues," and Booker T. & the M.G.'s back both Joe Walsh on a rollicking "Rocky Mountain Way" and Los Lobos' David Hidalgo tearing into a sizzling "The Neighborhood." Clapton and J.J. Cale share the stage as do Clapton and Carlos Santana, and a show-stopping blues summit with Robert Cray, Jimmie Vaughan, Hubert Sumlin, B.B. King, Buddy Guy, and Clapton is a treat for all involved.

There are some shortcomings. The event isn't presented in chronological order--different stages, days, and backing bands are shuffled with Clapton's own set scattered throughout--ZZ Top's closing is a bit anticlimactic, and there are many omissions due to time constraints. But every act rises to the occasion, and this expertly recorded and shot DVD gives the viewer a front-row seat to a once-in-a-lifetime experience. --Hal Horowitz

Music is all subjective, of course. Different folks have different favorites. For me the highlights of this 2-disc set can be summed up in two words: Joe Walsh. David Hidalgo and Billy Gibbons (of course) also make strong showings.

The legend of Mississippi blues master Robert Johnson has served as a fountainhead for generations of blues and rock musicians, as well as a powerful fable for the dark, often violent mysteries of delta blues. Johnson's mythic deal with the Devil, in exchange for his extraordinary musical gifts, has become a fixture in blues lore and an example of the enduring pull of superstitions that can be traced back to Mother Africa and Yoruba deities. Producer-director Walter Hill (The Long Riders, Streets of Fire) sought to put this uniquely American mystery on film, but when he was unable to secure a script devoted directly to Johnson himself, Hill bravely decided to proceed with a more oblique, allegorical story that retold the Satanic bargain through a fictionalized drama set in the present day. In this 1986 feature, the hero is Eugene, a classically trained guitar virtuoso pulled toward the earthier powers of blues. When he stumbles across a lost blues legend, Willie Brown (a real blues figure and Johnson peer known for his partnerships with Charley Patton and Son House, among others), Eugene begins an odyssey back to the delta country and the crossroads of the title, where both Willie and Johnson had traded their souls for blues power, to help the surviving bluesman renegotiate terms.

An opening sequence, shot in sepia-toned black and white, dramatizes Johnson's own supernatural encounter, as well as one of the bluesman's historic Texas recording sessions, and Hill's visuals combine with frequent collaborator Ry Cooder's reliably authentic slide guitar to offer a promising glimpse of cinematic conjury. Even the satanic villain--a grinning huckster named Scratch--honors the trickster figure familiar to African American superstitions, rather than a generic devil. Willie Brown (Joe Seneca) is likewise a convincing link to the blues past, but Hill's central casting choice--Ralph (The Karate Kid) Macchio--sacrifices all for marquee value, a Hobson's choice that casts a shadow of unintended parody across the film. Macchio's earlier character, not Scratch, haunts this film, and even a nifty duel between Eugene, his slashing fretwork supplied off-camera by Cooder, and Scratch's ax-wielding henchman, heavy metal virtuoso, and one-time Frank Zappa protégé Steve Vai, can't safely rescue the film. --Sam Sutherland

The movie was a gift for my husband and step-son who both play the guitar. My Husband has seen it many times but it was the first time my step-son saw it. I highly recommend it for anyone who has a musician in the family or someone who just loves music.

One of my all time favourites. I have wathced this more times than I can count, and will continue to do so. The story line may not be the greatest, but the music makes up for any shortcomings.

The VCR ate my video one evening so I immediately jumped on the web to see if I could get it on DVD and of course Amazon had it! I had it in three or four days and have already watched it twice... again. Not only does it "rock" as in a good movie, it rocks with its musical content... it you like this kind of jivey kinda music and I do. I just pass over the language of which it has plenty and concentrate on the story-line and the actual musical content. Joe Seneca's character is cantankerous and steals the show. A fun movie... for me.

Even though the this is a somewhat dated movie, the story is interesting and the adventures of the characters are enough to keep the audience engaged and entertained. Ralph Machio isn't one of the most convincing actors of the time and his pouty face can become a bit annoying, he is really the only downfall of the movie. I gave it four stars as the story is excellent, the music is entertaining and most of the acting is reasonably good.

An inspired take on adolescent alienation and angst, Zwigoff's "Ghost World"--adapted from the graphic novel by Daniel Clowes--is a clever and quirky character piece. The three leads are great, but Ileanna Douglas almost steals the film as eccentric art teacher Roberta, who pushes Enid to realize her creative talents. Yes, "Ghost World" is funny, but there's also wisdom and heart behind the laughs.

This film is a teen tale with some substance as well as humor. When Enid graduates from high school she's slow to grasp the realities necessary to cope in the adult world. Reluctant to get a job, her best friend starts to distance herself from Enid since she rebels against maturity. Enid reaches the height of her selfishness when she plays with the emotions of an older man who is a social misfit trying to find love and acceptance in the world. Young Enid learns a bold lesson in cruelty when her actions snowball, causing hurt to herself and others. There are funny and memorable characters.

i was hiking at griffith park in los angeles and when i got home this was playing on showtime. i loved it. first of all thora and scarlett are really hot. being as i collect stuff too i related with steve buscemi character who is a very talented funny actor. i think enid is hotter than scarlett but they are both at their peak here. the whole tone of the movie was very funny to me. the ending was cool, some say she killed herself but i just think she went to a strange place to start a new life like she wanted to. a personal fav.

The phone rings. Enid says, "Aren't you going to answer that?"

Seymour says, "I have no desire to talk to anyone who wants to talk to me."

He picks it up anyway and listens and then says, "That's my mother."

I just about cracked up.

Well, the whole movie cracked me up. It's a work of art from indie auteur Terry Zwigoff whom I recall as the director of the edgy documentary Crumb (1994). For some reason, as I was watching this, I thought it was directed by Todd Solondz who directed the amazingly real and funny Welcome to the Doll House (1995). I imagined this as a kind of high school/out of high school progression from the junior high school of Welcome to the Doll House. It could be, actually, with Thora Birch playing an older Dawn Weiner and having all those bad things happen to her, but still managing to survive it all. Both Enid Coleslaw and Dawn Weiner are amazingly true to life and also amazingly talented and unappreciated outsiders in this arbitrary and capricious world. Birch (whom I remember vividly from American Beauty 1999) in her glasses and all those campish outfits over her rather ample figure was just outstanding.

Scarlett Johansson who plays her friend Rebecca was as vivid as my high school date on prom night and actually prettier (I have to admit). She was also outstanding. Both Johansson and Birch are charismatic in a way that will glue your eyes to the screen. They play ultra cynical slackers who love to satirize the world and their fellow creatures as they hide their vulnerability from themselves. They are so cute.

Steve Buscemi plays Seymour, a kind of autobiographical alter ego of cartoonist Daniel Clowes (thus Enid's last name, "Coleslaw") who wrote the comic from which he and Zwigoff adapted the movie. Buscemi manages a tricky part calling for old school dorkishness, vulnerability and self-consciousness portrayed in an ultimately winning and sympathetic way.

There are a lot of amusing insider "trivia" comments about this movie at IMDb, including the fact that Sophie Crumb, daughter of Robert Crumb, did the drawings in Enid's notebook. One of the most amusing is this: "The actor who plays the high school principal in the graduation scene also plays one of the customers in the porno shop. This was not intentional--Terry Zwigoff cast him as a porno shop customer forgetting that he also played the principal."

Right.

See this for Zwigoff who has the eye and the ear of a genius, a man who knows the hearts of his characters and the mass culture they live in, and how to satirize them both, but gently with affection.

One of the Best Films of All Time.......2007-05-08

I've loved this movie since it came out in theaters. With an amazing cast of cult and mainstream stars, you cannot go wrong. Steve Buscemi and Thora Birch shine as the main characters, Seymour and Enid, while Scarlett Johannsen is great as Enid's motivated friend and foil, Rebecca.

I love the comic, and this movie is a nice complement to it. Even if you're not familiar with the comic, this movie will make you take a look at life, school and the BS that pervades all aspects of society.

I lost brain cells watching this movie. With a cast like Kim Catrel, Britney Spears and Kool Moe Dee how can you go wrong? I don't know what my life has in store for me but after watching this movie all I can be sure is I wanna be a better person, I now know what hell looks like and I don't want any part of it.

Among the finest Britney Spears movies ever made, Crossroads* tells the story of a high school graduate who drives to L.A. Not very exciting on paper, but up on the big screen, it's a drive-to-L.A.-stravaganza! Fueled by today's exciting pop hits, Crossroads is sure to connect with the new "youth" market we've been hearing so much about lately. Featuring knock-out performances by Dan Aykroyd (My Girl 2) and Kim Cattrall (Turk 182!) and featuring the chart busting hits of newcomers Mystikal and *Nsync (prounounced NUHS-ink), Crossroads is Federline-free fun for the whole family. Oh, and it makes for a hilarious RiffTrax.

Sadly, I am a sucker for films that nearly everyone has knocked over backwards. I want to discover, myself, if these occasionally hidden cinematic gems are still hiding or if big corporate Hollywood has just smeared them enough to nearly wipe them out of film existence. With "Crossroads", there was enough plague surrounding it that friends nearly shunned me for weeks knowing that this film was in my house, more-so in my DVD player. Yet, I found persistence, and I watched with open eyes - twice actually, so that I can fully develop the sheer strength that "Crossroads" had to offer. Well, friends, Romans, and fellow cinephiles out there, I can now officially add "Crossroads" to the list of horrid films that everyone quivers over yet has actually never seen. I have seen "Crossroads", and I can stand up on a soapbox and announce that it is not the horrid trash everyone speaks about, but it also isn't worth the film it is printed on. This was a cookie-cutter film, produced by Hollywood to benefit the distribution of CD sales and promote the already growing popularity of one Britney Spears. This was not a film, but a platform from Ms. Spears, and by listening to the commentary, you begin to realize the power that this young girl once had - I stress the word "once". Now, two kids and several tabloids later, I am not sure that this film could even see the light of day.

To begin, because that is always a good starting point with films of this nature, I must take a step forward and say that the acting wasn't excruciating, but it was painful. It was obvious that our three leads, Spears, Saldana, and Manning, were quickly becoming strong friends - and that friendship translated well onto the screen, but it was their individual stories and accomplishments that created the pain. In one scene, we saw this trio as little girls - friends without a care in the world - then instantly we are pushed into the awkward high school dark ages where nobody is friends with anyone. Riffs have been issued, and we are asked to rediscover who these characters are again. Matching them with their young counterparts is easy, but when their mouths open, it is another world all together. Spears leads with a hodgepodge of different characteristics. She dances sensually in her bedroom, unrobes nonchalantly in front of her lab partner, but is most avid about doing the right thing when it comes to morality and truthfulness. There is even one scene where she hangs up on her father, no doubtably instilling the correct visions into her impressionable teen fan base. She couldn't give us a straight character to save her life. Coupled with the annoying Zoe Saldana who tries the hardest of the group, but cannot seem to quite understand the life surrounding her. Then, painful to write, there is Taryn Manning (who gets better with each film) using every cliché redneck white-trash persona possible to define her character. It isn't bad enough that we have Spears fading in and out of her "real" character that to have Manning use "y'all" like it is Shakespeare - yikes. Again, the acting isn't bad (I have seen far, far, far worse), but it isn't Juliard - closer to flunking out of Acting 101.

I have mediocre respect for director Tamra Davis. The woman that gave us the hysterical and near cult-classic "Billy Madison" as well as "Half-Baked", has also turned out slow duds like "Gun Crazy" and, surprise, "Crossroads". Her talent seems to be all over the place instead of choosing projects that will continue to define her. Listening to the commentary, it felt she did this to 1) work with Spears, 2) she needed the rent money, and 3) it was an all girl cast - her youthfulness will be returned. Not exactly the typical reasons artist create on a blank slate. With Davis, I wanted humor, darkness, or anything that would make me remember why I loved "Madison" or "Half-Baked' - ANYTHING - there was nothing. Did I expect it with "Crossroads", probably not, but it would have been nice to see something that was uniquely hers. Road movies are made weekly, and it is those road films that try to bring something new to the genre that stand out and bring more to the table. Wasn't "Billy Madison" just a take-off of "Back to School"? I just question the ability of Davis without a studio baking and thankfully she has taken her raw, rotten talent to television only to further infuse the masses.

We are left with nothing more than the story. What story did "Crossroads" tell? How about one lone girl's quest to find herself and loose her virginity? Does that sound right? Again, this wasn't rocket science writing, yet it seemed amateur from the first word. We know who Spears' love interest is going to be from the beginning, the "take" at the end is given away within the first twenty minutes, and the only strength to this entire film is a scene with Dan Aykroyd saying "I was a Ghostbuster, a Blues Brother, and Conehead - I did this film for my kids". I believe that sums up this whole story in a nutshell. Needless to say, the story lacked any depth, and there was one scene where we attempted to bring real life to the screen with a rape, an accidental death, and our old friend, "underage drinking". Thankfully, Spears could push beyond all this and finally sing her songs near the end, the obvious finale to the film that was started. The ending point didn't match with the starting point in this film.

So, I watched this film. Everyone will have to at one point in their life, I just shortened the inevitable. Again, it wasn't the worst film ever made, "Glitter" still ranks below this, but there wasn't any value in the final performance. Spears didn't push for this film to be made because she wanted to be an actress, she wanted more face time with an audience that seemed on the fence about her ability - and as time has shown, we didn't make the best assumption. The acting wasn't horrible, but everything else was so we are left with a sour taste in our mouth coming from all directions. I will not, nor suggest this film to anyone except my wife, who thought it was better than "Clerks II".

Ouch. I will end on that note.

soooo good! if you are a teen/preeten who just wants to watch a nice happy ending movie you will love it. if you want a movie with morals and stuff like that this is not the movie for you.

It's been quite a road for Eric Clapton: from blues purist to rock guitar god, from country-pop balladeer to classic rock icon, and on to his current status as all-around legend, playing everything from straight blues to neo-soul. Those different aspects are all on display in this concert, taped at New York's Madison Square Garden to raise funds for the guitarist's drug and alcohol rehab center in the Caribbean. But it is as a collaborator or accompanist that he really shines, whether he's adding some tasty slide guitar to Sheryl Crow's "Different Kind," generating some real heat with saxophonist David Sanborn during a fiery "Little Wing," or harmonizing and trading guitar licks with Bob Dylan during a good-timey "Crossroads." This is a great one if your a big Clapton fan. David Sanborn was great to watch and hear as was Dylan playing with Eric. Just a fun performance all around. Buy it, watch it, and enjoy the evening.

Big Mistake!.......2007-08-08

I was looking for the Crossroads Guitar Festival as aired on PBS and picked this one up by mistake. Big mistake! This is a lackluster recording of a few songs from another concert altogether. Maybe it was a good concert, maybe not. Either way, this recording does nothing to showcase Clapton or his music.

Uncommon Presentation.......2004-01-03

I adore Clapton, and own all of his DVD's. I have to rate this one at the bottom of the list, though it is worth the purchase just to get the rare "Little Wing" performance. He uses the same arrangement/approach that the Dominos used, and it is good. After that, I have to agree with the other reviews here that critise the choices of selections from the concert that ended up on the DVD. I would really enjoy seeing the songs that were deleted, rather than the great, but oft repeated warhorses like "Sunshine of Your Love", and yet another "Tears in Heaven." There are just so many wonderful choices in his past repetoire that he NEVER performs now like "Strange Brew", "Forever Man", or "I Am Yours" that would be precious to many of his fans! But to avoid misunderstanding, I must say that what is here is predominantly great. (The only blatant exception being the horror of what is done to the usually poignant "Old Love" by a keyboardist that I have never seen with him before. I "skip" over that song always!)

The guests are somewhat unusual, though mostly pleasing. Sheryl Crow is fine, Bob Dylan is excellent, Dave Sanborn is probably good, (I rarely take note of horns), but the Mary Blige section is, ...well, ...unexpected!.

This superb documentary vividly illustrates the enduring vitality of country blues, an idiom that most mainstream music fans had presumed dead or, at best, preserved through more scholarly tributes when filmmaker Robert Mugge and veteran blues and rock writer Robert Palmer embarked on their 1990 odyssey into Mississippi delta country. What Arkansas native and former Memphis stalwart Palmer knew, and Mugge captured on film, was that the blues was not only alive but still intimately woven into the daily lives of rural blacks.

Palmer, a former rock musician and Memphis Blues Festival cofounder best known for his bylines in The New York Times and Rolling Stone, had already chronicled the saga of Southern blues in his seminal book that provides the film's title. He's an astute guide, and Mugge underlines this role by pairing him with British rocker Dave Stewart (Eurythmics), whose avid interest in the music makes him an effective foil.

The film's real triumph, however, rests in the team's success in capturing modern day blues survivors and inheritors playing in the bars, juke joints, and barns of delta country. Palmer, who had returned several years earlier to the delta to capture these artists for his scrappy Fat Possum label, introduces us to the now-amplified but still elemental blues of R.L. Burnside, the late Junior Kimbrough, Jessie Mae Hemphill, Roosevelt "Booba" Barnes, and other keepers of the faith. Mugge, whose profiles of Al Green, Sonny Rollins, and other musicians probed their cultural and artistic contexts with intelligence and sensitivity, captures both the music and the milieu in crisp color footage. this is a serious history of the blues treating the blues with the same respect & seriousness given jazz, classical and other forms. it is a wonderful book combining interviews with blues legends like muddy waters and howling wolf with in-depth musical and cultural analysis.

Great blues DVD.......2007-02-21

For someone wanting to get a feel for some relatively modern Delta blues this is a great documentary. Lots of gritty feel to the setting and characters here. The tracks were recorded with great attention to quality. Of especial interest is the portion about RL Burnside as this was his re-discovery! His music career really took off from here! Also, Jesse Mae Hemphill's solo performance is absolute magic, very powerful.

If you like the blues you can't go wrong with this DVD.

Historical Value to Blues genre.......2007-01-04

Deep Blues was refered to me by an artist who amazed me with his talent one night at the Aligator Soul in Everett WA. Ryan played delta blues very well, I saw several folks in the crowd stop eating their meal to listen to this man in his 30's belting out the blues on his dobro. After his show I talked with him asking him how he came to know delta blues so well. He said he had watched "you see me laughing" and many video's on blues but desired to see "Deep Blues". As a blues artist and fan I had to have this video so I bought it, I have watched it several times over and will continue to draw from the rich history of where it started, learning from many of the artists the main stream has not heard of, simply put Deep Blues is a must for blues fans and aspiring artists alike it will help you keep the blues alive.

This is a great documentary of true Mississippi Delta Blues. I've been searching for this since it was first released in 1992 and finally found it on Amazon. I've had the soundtrack since 1992 and still consider it one of my all-time best blues recordings. If you love the blues, you'll love this and I promise you won't be disappointed.

I like happy endings, but when it comes to have a sad one, I do like a good reason for the non-happy ending. This doesn't seem to give one. I kept waiting something to happen, but it didn't. There's no romance.

Why am I always behind on good movies? Plus, *Loggerheads* is one of those rare gay movies that are worthy to watch. It is not entirely a gay movie but it does seem to be a common theme throughout as there are three different things happening.

Grace Bellamy (Hunt) is living with her mother. After a failed suicide, she decides to find a boy that she had given up for adoption when she was 17. While dealing with issues with her mother, Grace hires some sort of a private investigator to find information on her son.

Robert and Elizabeth live in a quiet family neighborhood in North Carolina. Robert is a reverend and spends most of his time at his church. Elizabeth is one of those nosy ladies that constantly check through the window on the neighbors. Things are happening that she feels the neighbors will complain when it is just her. There's a couple of things going on that is keeping Elizabeth busy. First, she believes that a gay couple, with a kid, has moved in across the street. Secondly, another neighbor has put up a nude statue of David in the front yard. The reverend urges her to invite them to church and to convince a neighbor to take down the statue.

George runs a motel at Kure Beach. He's gay and everyone in this little town knows it and do not make it a big deal. Mark is a newcomer. He comes to check up on the loggerhead turtles, since they are endangered. George and Mark strike up a friendship, which Mark confides that he is HIV-positive. While Mark is used to bartering with sex, George shows him that there's more to life and friendship than sex bartering.

*Loggerheads* is just simply a wonderful film that's low-key in drama and dialogues. And it works! It couldn't have been done better than to film it in North Carolina, where everything fits. Good movie about redemption and closure.

A rather slow paced movie, which does not take us wherw we want to go, but a truly emotionable film that is finely crafted by a great cast and crew. Up there with my very favourites.

I enjoyed this film, a lot more than i orginally thought. In the days after seeing it, i could not stop thinking about it. Loggerheads will remain one of my favorites, up there with "A Beautiful Thing" and "The Line Of Beauty". The sound track is amazing, perfectly suited to te film.

What an incredibly moving film - I am an adoptee that searched for her mom, only to find that she had died many years ago. This film is right on in the representations of adoptees and mothers searching - the acting is so true to life and the images have stayed with me. This is one of my absolute favorite films ever - I was moved to tears many times. Incredible film -

Don't Bother.......2007-07-23

I always thought that while movies about incest were shocking in, say, 1975, that path had been well-worn. Not to say that I'm only looking for shock in movies, but I found this renouned drama to be rather flat and bloodless. Sure the acting is good, but the script is rather pedestrian, the characters uninteresting, and after the end we don't get a sense that much has changed. And it's all told so slowly, with lots of portentious flashbacks (it reminded me in that regard of Barbra Streisand's Nuts, another overpraised film) as though there's this great profundity when in fact there's nothing but banality. I was waiting for the twist, the surprising insight, but it never came. The video box is plastered with awards and nominations, but compared to the ground-breaking Italian cinema of Fellini and De Sica and other, lesser names, this is banal television. Can't say I'd recommend this, unless you're looking for something light. Yes, light. It seems odd to describe a movie about incest that way, but 2007 isn't 1975.

Superb film.......2007-04-28

This award winning Italian film tackles a difficult issue in a subdued but dignified manner with great acting along the way. The title, "Don't Tell," sums up the main question behind the film. When should you tell about deep secrets?

The film's answer appears to be always. Sabrina's problems come from covering up her childhood suffering caused by her fathers' sexual abuse of her as a child. Will she ruin her retationship with the famous actor who loves her so? Of course he did cheat on her when she was with her brother in the states but he does not think it important.

Relationships are very fragile in this drama which easity could have degenerated into a melodrama but the fine film avoids that danger and delivers a subtle but nevertheless real emotional impact.

Or something like that. It seems that this is perhaps the central theme of this beautifully directed Italian drama.

A woman is troubled by a dream of being molested by her father, and is afraid she has awakened a memory that she has repressed for years, so she goes to America to visit her estranged brother and his family and try to talk about the sensitive subject matter and address issues that might be troubling her.

Don't Tell covers the delicate ground of child molestation and how, as adults, the victims try to deal with the painful memories. It also covers other very emotional territory, like the cheating nature of men (every man in the film at some point cheats on his lover, leaves her, talks about having done so, etc.) I don't know if that part of the story is in the original novel, or if it was added because the film was directed by a woman. Either way, it feeds the relationship doubt that women already have.

Don't Tell is a very moving and superbly acted film. There is not a lot of action, but the intensity of the story carries the movie along, until the end when a strange montage on a train really detracts from the ultimate impact of the movie, and seems like it will leave most viewers, myself included, simply feeling confused.

It's definitely clear why this film was nominated for Best Foreign Film at the 2005 Academy Awards, and if you're in to troubling dramatic films, this is definitely one to check out.

The writing and directing were fantastic, and Ms. Comencini was able to get wonderful, moving performances from everyone in the film. Highly recommended.

The Damages of Suppression.......2006-08-20

'La Bestia nel cuore' ('The Beast in the Heart' released in the USA as 'Don't Tell') is an intense Italian film written and directed by Cristina Comencini that tackles subject matter so visceral that the telling of it requires complete concentration from the audience in order to feel the power of the impact at the end. It is a tough film to watch because of the story, but it is a superb film to watch because of the excellent cast and production crew.

Sabina (Giovanna Mezzogiorno) is introduced to us in a cemetery where she is arranging for the interment of her dead parents: the mood for the story is subtly set. Sabina is a dubbing actress for translating films into Italian, a 'sell-out' acting job compared to the life of her live-in boyfriend Franco (Alessio Boni) who is a stage actor being tempted to accept a role in a TV series which pays more money than the stage. Sabina confesses she wants to get pregnant, she does, and with her pregnancy she begins to have nightmares of shadowy childhood memories. She is afraid to discuss these with Franco, or with her best friend Emilia (Stefania Rocca) who is blind and has been in love with Sabina since childhood. It seems the only person with whom she can confide her secret fears is her brother Daniele (Luigi Lo Cascio) who has moved from Italy to Charlottesville, VA where he is a professor at the University and has a happy family life with wife Anna (Lucy Akhurst) and two children. Sabina flies to the US to be with her brother and in the course of their reunion the two siblings uncover the beasts in their hearts: sexual abuse from their father now departed. How this discovery alters their lives is the dénouement of the film.

There are many subplots - infidelity on the part of Franco while Sabina is away, a lesbian relationship that develops between Emilia and another of Sabina's friends Maria (Angela Finocchiaro) - and Comencini draws subtle parallels between these twists along side the main story of incest discovery. Yet without concentration, these subplots can become distracting.

The acting is on the highest level and the changing locations are shot by cinematographer Fabio Cianchetti with sensitive respect of the nuances of suggestion encased in each place. The uncredited musical score is an admixture from Robert Schumann's piano sonata to contemporary works and serves to heighten the actions and mood. In Italian with subtitles.
