Picture James Carville and Mary Matalin dropped into a screwball comedy. Michael Keaton and Geena Davis are political speechwriters with bad cases of insomnia who meet cute, fall in love, and then discover that they are working for opposing candidates. The subsequent short-lived war of dirty tricks and one-upmanship is one of those contrivances that is soon (and thankfully) discarded in light of their instant rapport and mutual respect. In a world where candidates are for sale and campaigns are fought like poker games, these idealists are made for each other--they just don't know it yet. Director Ron Underwood (City Slickers) has a light touch with comedy and a nice feel for romantic fun, but it's the charm of Keaton and Davis that puts the bounce in an otherwise limp political satire. --Sean Axmaker

5 out of 5 stars ...love at first soundbite..........2006-09-02

if you are looking for a great romantic pairing, you can't get much better than michael keaton and geena davis in this wonderful film about the love of politics and the politics of love...as two campaign writers, keaton and davis display a chemistry that is truly sweet amd truly believable...this film, along with 'return to me', both display what's missing in most romantic films, shot in 'the age of color'... (classic black and white films, however, featuring the likes of tracy and hepburn, bogart and bacall, etc...that's a whole 'nother story...)...but for the technicolor age, you can't do better than this...so please, do yourself a favor...put down your 'pretty woman', wake up your 'sleepless in seattle', forget about 'when harry met sally', and find out what a good romantic film is supposed to look like...

3 out of 5 stars High Order Debacle.......2005-10-16

SPEECHLESS is a cinematic debacle of the highest order. It is truly a shame when an ensemble of talent cannot bring the final artistic product to fruition. I do not blame Keaton or Davis. Director Don Underwood did the best with what he had to work with. The fly in the ointment here is writer Robert King. His basic plot and premise are fine but his script lacks the most rudimentary elements of providing good coherent and captivating dialogue. His script is blatantly bland and becomes annoying as the film progresses. Christopher Reeve, who should have been a strong peripheral yet pivotal character, looks extremely awkward delivering his lines. Bonnie Bedelia, a fine actress, also comes out less then her potential. This film is a real lost opportunity.

1 out of 5 stars Flabbergasted .......2005-10-07

This is one of the worst romantic comedies ever made. It is horribly written and directed. Michael Keaton and Geena Davis' talents are horribly squandered. The only standout is Christopher Reeve. This film is a real burden to watch.

Description

The film is highly stylized. One of the dance sequences is like a Brueghel painting sprung to life; the living mingle with the dead physically and thus emotionally.

When Caruso heard Sirota sing "Celeste Aida" in a concert, he reportedly thanked God the cantor had chosen "to employ his heavenly gift in a different field." Sirota, born in Russia in 1874, officiated as cantor in Odessa, Vilna and Warsaw. He made cantorial recordings, beginning in 1903. From 1927-35, he sang concerts throughout Europe and in the U.S. He and his family perished in the Warsaw ghetto in 1943. In this film he is heard for a few minutes. The Dybbuk was filmed on location in Kazimierz, Poland, and in a Warsaw studio, in 1937.

The Dybbuk is the most widely produced play in the history of Jewish theater. It has been performed in Yiddish, Hebrew, German, Polish, English, Ukranian, Swedish, Bulgarian, Czech, Serbian, French and Japanese.--Stefan Zucker

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Masterpiece of Yiddish cinema: The Dybbuk.......2007-01-11

This is a first-rate version of the Yiddish classic, which tells the story of a dybbuk - the soul of a dead person who can't let go of someone he/she loved, and returns to inhabit the body of his/her beloved. It was filmed in Poland before the war with the participation of the Jewish community, and besides offering an aesthetic/dramatic feast, gives a highly illuminating picture of Jewish life in central Europe before the Holocaust. A must-see for anybody with an interest in the history of the cinema. And when you've seen this, see the German silent picture The Golem.

5 out of 5 stars "One Comes Into The World, Another Leaves" ~ Penetrating The Mysticism Of The Kabala.......2006-12-29

Note: Yiddish with English subtitles.

`The Dybbuk', released in '37 is a cinematic time capsule providing the viewer with a mesmerizing glimpse into a world that no longer exists. While '37 was a long time ago (70 years come 01/07) the film has a feel, no an atmosphere, that seems much older. Filled with magic, superstition and Jewish mysticism, it is a veritable compendium of Yiddish culture, religious practice and belief. While such subject matters will clearly command the attention of a very select audience it is an immensely important film nevertheless.

Synopsis: Two young people, Leah (Lili Liliana) and Channon (Leon Liebgold), fall hopelessly in love but are unable to wed because Leah's Father plans for her to wed a wealthier suitor. Heartbroken, Channon turns from his pious ways and calls upon the "Powers of Darkness" to come to his rescue and help him secure his desired bride. Unfortunately Satan isn't in the business of bringing young lovers together to live happily ever after. Only sadness and grief lie ahead.

This is really quite a watch, kind of an Ingmar Bergman's 'The Seventh Seal' meets `Fiddler On The Roof' with a little touch of `The Exorcist' thrown in for good measure. Definitely not for everyone, but if you're in the mood for something totally different and are willing to put in the time and attention to explore the darker teachings of Kabala and Jewish mysticism this will serve as a great primer.

5 out of 5 stars exceptional.......2006-12-03

I saw this movie many years ago. This is a deeply moving story and I think Bergman must have seen it for it predates Bergman but is done in the same style that he uses. It is eery and tragic beyond anything. A spirit simply materializes on a road (this is 1937) and warns two fathers about plighting their son and daughter into matrimony. Tragic events ensue. A great and heart rending love story.

5 out of 5 stars An extraordinary film.......2006-03-12

This film is exceptionnal. Not only it was shot in yiddish in Poland four years before Hitler's agression, but also it relates a fantastic story of love beyond life and death, good and evil in a mystic community of religious Jews (hassidim). Eventually, the actors and the scipt are excellent, and the religious songs strongly emphasize the mysticism of the story. It's a real "chef-d'oeuvre", an ultimate cry of love in a world condamned to disappear, and the dance of the bride with the death has a prophetic flavour.

4 out of 5 stars LIKE THE EXORCIST, ONLY JEWISH.......2005-09-06

My rating of four stars reflects the dvd transfer of this movie. While the movie is a part of film history and itself worthy of five stars, the restoration of the movie leaves a lot to be desired. The movie is in Yiddish, with English subtitles. This film being black and white, it is very hard to read the white subtitles. It would have been easier to read if the subtitles were yellow.
Channon falls in love with Leah. Unbeknownst to them, but knownst to us, their parents made a sacred pact that if one fathered a boy and the other a girl, they would be wed. One father dies and years later, the pact is forgotten about. I will not give away the rest of the story, but this movie has a lot to do with Kabbalah and numerology, as well as the interesting topic of exorcisms within the Jewish faith. It also has a character that can dissappear and reappear at will and also communicate with the dead.
This is a truly interesting film. I suggest this to anyone interested in Yiddish, as well as those interested in Kabbalah/Jewish Mysticism.

What a great deal.
I wish I'd seen this before.
It's like getting 25 albums for 1.

5 out of 5 stars Superb collection........2002-10-05

How they managed to get all of these albums on one CD I cannot imagine.
Why don't more artists use this DVD technology to sell their entire collections on one disc.
It's very nice for the user to have one disc to manage.

5 out of 5 stars Worth every penny- and then some........2002-09-22

This couple has so much to offer.
The DVD GOES ON AND ON.
This is a duo with incredible substance, passion, intelligence, and artistic merit, which the DVD shows in spades.
We are very happy customers.

5 out of 5 stars Astounding Quality and Breadth.......2002-08-16

Alot of folks are just getting to know about Troy and Genie, but what an amazing career they've already had. This DVD just goes on and on and on with brilliance, humor, and tenderness. It's the best music value I've ever seen.

5 out of 5 stars What a Bonus find! Get it while you can!.......2002-07-30

It's so extraordinary what they've included on this DVD that I thought I'd write a note to let you know since I couldn't find the info on this page.
They've basically included every product they've made: Genie's peaceful music: Whisper, Angels All Around, Wildflowers
Troy's tripped out, deep music: Sacred Sky, and his solo songs
KIDS music: Scripture Rock, Hip hop Hymns, God's Top 10, Worship Rock, Rock the Word (Scripture Rock 2), The Body, Chrstmas Animals. (the kids stuff is mostly split-track, which is excellent for my kids choir.)
Also, I enjoy the impossible to find stuff like Troy's old Noisy Little Sunbeams album and rarities like Talking to my Dog and Sigmund Freud.
The only downside is that you need a DVD player, but how else are you going to get all of this music on one disc for basically the price of a CD?
