Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars A great collection of James Stewart movies.......2007-06-14

This is a great collection of James Stewart's finest non-Hitchcock performances in films under the control of Universal Studios that span thirty years in his career. The price is excellent, but the trade-off is that you don't get much in the way of extras. In fact, all you get are theatrical trailers on a couple of the movies.

Shenandoah (1965) is a film about the Anderson family of Virginia, which is living a happy life on their family farm when the Civil War breaks out. They are convinced this skirmish has nothing to do with them, but they are soon to find out otherwise. Stewart certainly gives one of the performances of his career in this one.

The Glenn Miller Story (1953) reteams James Stewart with June Allyson, who were so good in "The Stratton Story", in a similar film about a man with great talent whose career was cut short by tragedy. Miller has always been ranked as one of the great swing bandleaders of the late thirties to middle forties era, and this film is a great tribute to his life and work. A great performance from all involved.

Thunder Bay (1953) is set in the post-World War II era, but in many ways it is another James Stewart western. Stewart portrays ex-Navy engineer Steve Martin who wants to design a safe off-shore oil drilling platform. Instead of the cattlemen versus the sheepherders, in this film we have the oil drillers versus the fishermen who see their way of life threatened. Stewart seems a less sympathetic figure here than he does in most of his films, but he handles the role wonderfully.

You Gotta Stay Happy (1948) is the lighter side of Stewart. This one is "It Happened One Night" meets "The Bride Came C.O.D" as a wealthy girl hides aboard Stewart's plane when she gets a case of the immediate post-wedding jitters. What results is a screwball comedy that predictably ends in the wealthy girl (Joan Fontaine) and Stewart's character falling in love. The plot is not that intriguing, but Stewart is charming as always. This is probably the weakest of the five films.

Next Time, We Love (1936) is a very early Stewart film that really gave him his first big break with a leading role. In this film he was teamed with Margaret Sullivan, and together they play a couple that marries on impulse and then begin pursuing their own individual careers - she is an actress, he is a journalist. Conflict develops when her career takes off and his does not. This film is very typical of those melodramas that were so common in the 1930's, but it is still interesting to see what Stewart does with this early role in his career. Stewart and Sullivan have a better chance to show off their chemistry in 1938's "Shopworn Angel", but that film was made by MGM and is therefore not in this collection.

5 out of 5 stars very good value even considering the duplication....4+stars.......2007-06-13

5 Jimmy Stewart films for about $4 each is hard to not give a 5 star rating to. 3 of these films are seeing their DVD debut (unlike the John Wayne set that came out today with all 5 already being available individually). I am already owner of The GLenn Miller Story and SHenandoah as many Jimmy STewart fans must and still consider this a good purchase. The three movies new to DVD all have merit and span a 20 year range from his first leading role in 1936 ("Next TIme We Love" where he mentions lindberghs flight to Paris in his first lines)to "Thunder Bay" in 1953. This was Universals first widescreen film and directed by Anthony Mann. I am a big fan of all the Mann/Stewart films and this one is terrific.

Bottom line...if you don't own any and are a Jimmy Stewart fan...whopeee!
If you do own a couple...its still a good deal.
PS..these 5 films are on 3 DVDs but NO FLIPPERS...one sided dual layers!

A beautifully heart-wrenching movie. Zhao, a middle-aged laid-off factory worker, longs for a wife; in the hopes of marrying a pushy divorcée, he agrees to pay for an expensive wedding. To raise money, he turns a derelict bus into a place for couples to rendezvous, and brags to his fiancee about how he manages the Happy Times Hotel. When the divorcée insists that Zhao give Ying, her blind stepdaughter, a job at the hotel as a masseuse, he convinces his friends to help him concoct a fake massage parlor where the girl can work. Happy Times begins as a delightful light comedy, but as the relationship between Zhao and Ying grows, this deceptively simple movie flows effortlessly back and forth from sweetness to sorrow, culminating in a devastatingly moving ending. --Bret Fetzer

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars BEST MOVIE EVER!!!.......2007-02-20

I am not really 13. In fact...I am 16, and completely entranced by the essence of this movie! I was totally flabbergasted once the movie started! There wasn't huge bombs exploding or people doing crazy "Matrix" moves, but for some non-apparent reason, I couldn't take my eyes off the screen. I was caught, Hook, line and sinker by the the first half hour! The poor girl seemed like a rebel at first, but after you learn her story you change from judgemental to compassionate! This is a definite must see movie! I would reccomend it to a 90 year old man and to a 7 year old girl. The lessons and knowledge shared is enough to influence anyone and to leave an impression that will not be easily forgotten.

5 out of 5 stars Yimou's best........2005-10-24

I really don't care for some of Yimou Zang's films that other people seem to love. Hero and House of the Flying Daggers are really great visual masterpieces, but to me they seem rather silly and unrealistic on many levels (not just technical).

However, I really love his other films dealing with ordinary people in realistic settings. Among them, Happy Times is by far the best.

This movie's central theme is about one person lying to another to bring him/her joy and meaning in existence. It is the act of deception that somehow gets turned into a great expression of love. That is an amazing thing to capture.

The actors are just perfect, especially the two leads. The girl playing the blind actress made the best performance I've seen ever.

If you like this movie, check out Shanghai Triad and Keep Cool.

5 out of 5 stars Don't be fooled by the cover.......2005-05-09

I almost didn't rent this movie-because--quite simply--I thought the cover picture held promises of a silly little movie--good for maybe a few "chunky mama" jokes--boy was I wrong--this is one of the better movies I've seen recently. The movie does begin along the lines of what I expected-as Zhao creates his "Happy Times Hotel"-and there is a bit of humor--but once he begins his relationship with Ying--the story progresses into a dramatic touching relationship between the two outcasts--young blind Ying and middle aged, never married Zhao. Their relationship is not a romantic one--but a paternal one-with Zhao writing a fake letter to Ying from her father who abandoned her--among other things.
The ending is not the happy, feel good ending typical of American movies--which is probably one of the things that makes it stand out.
The movie is subtitled-which I have no problem with--but my wife doesn't normally like subtitled movies--but she loved this one. If you don't care for subtitles--give this one a try anyway--it's worth the little extra effort!

4 out of 5 stars Forsaken, Brave China.......2005-02-19

Don't kid yourself reviewers. There's a whole lot more here than meets the eye. You don't have to be a friendless blind girl in a city of ten million to appreciate human frailty and kindness. Yimou Zhang is a very fine director and his vision can be thoughtful and appreciated on several levels. China is still exotic to look at from my American standpoint. The colors are garish and bright. The modern city bustles, the young are hip and making it where they can. The old worker's, many victims of the poverty and cruelty caused by The Great Leap Forward and other catastrophic Marxist disasters, are still searching for happiness. Now, in their fifties, they look about and their old factories are rusting, glass office towers are going sky high.

I'm still not sure that the actress that played a blind teen is not actually blind. Either way, she's a genius. Her final scene, forsaken, blind, but brave China, venturing into the traffic. This is filmmaking.

5 out of 5 stars 5-Stars for Happy Times.......2005-02-09

The only reason I watched this film was because Zhang Yimou directed it. That's the respect I have for him as a director in this industry. At first blush, I thought that Happy Times was going to be a shallow, corny type of movie. I couldn't have been more wrong. While there are more light-hearted moments than in Yimou's other works, Happy Times gives glimpse into the lives of common Chinese people and a much more penetrating and uplifting look into the human heart and human spirit.

From the reviews you should already know that Happy Times is about an aging Chinese man trying to court a potential wife. He tries to persuade her by pretending to be something he is not - the general manager of a luxury hotel. But in the process he finds himself taking responsiblity for the woman's blind stepdaughter. How this all works out in the end is something you just have to see for yourself. Trust me, it is an exquisite Zhang Yimou finish.

I am not at all familiar with the actors but they were all wonderful. In particular, actress Dong Jie gives a heartbreakingly eloquent performance as the blind stepdaughter.

It's a wonderfully warped glimpse of the criminal underworld, where insanity reigns and the barbs and bullets fly. Dreyfuss is Vic, a mob boss who's crazy. Literally. After his release from a mental hospital, he returns to find that his organization is crumbling and no wonder! With friends like his, who needs enemies? There's Mickey Holiday (Jeff Goldblum), the hired gun whose lightning-fast hands have been all over Vic's girlfriend (Diane Lane); Ben London(Gabriel Byrne), the slow-witted goon who sees himself replacing Vic as the gang's mastermind (evenif no one else can see it); and the luscious Rita (Ellen Barkin), a bombshell who could detonate atany moment. Vic struggles to 'restore the balance, but as he sorts through the myriad of loopy schemes against him, one thing becomes clear: he may be the only one who isn't crazy! With appearancesby Gregory Hines, Burt Reynolds and Kyle MacLachlan, Trigger Happy is a comedy masterwork! (American Urban Radio Networks).

5 out of 5 stars The Stuff Cult Films Are Made Of.......2007-03-06

1996's MADS DOG TIME is quirky fun. This little hoodlum black comedy is the stuff cult films are made of. Unorthodox at best, this film contains a great cast and very interesting characters. The cast truly is fantastic including Richard Dreyfuss, Gabriel Byrne, Jeff Goldblum, Burt Reynolds, Henry Silva, Joey Bishop, Diane Lane, Ellen Barkin, Kyle MacLachlan, Michael J. Pollard, Richard Pryor, Paul Anka, Gregory Hines and the long lost enigmatic Christopher Jones not seen since RYAN'S DAUGHTER. Larry Bishop produced, directed and wrote this wild screenplay. The more you watch it, the more you see. Highly underrated.

There's a lot to remember when taking care of a newborn these days: from car seats to colic, from circumcision care to crib safety. Dividing its information into 10 chapters (easily referenced by numbering in the right-hand corner), First Days Home covers baby's appearance, breastfeeding and formula, sleeping, crying, bathing, diapering, health and safety for baby, mom's recovery (hemorrhoids, discharges, and other fun stuff), and family relations. This 56-minute primer can't possibly have the details and depth of a book on the subject but makes the perfect summary for Dad or a babysitter, or a refresher course for a second-time mom. Chapters range in length from 2 to 9 minutes and cover all the basics, most importantly when to call the doctor for either baby or Mom and how to distinguish between "baby blues" and the more serious postpartum depression. --Kimberly Heinrichs

        Description

The powerful, compelling singing style of rural mountain musicians, captured on tape in the twenties and thirties by record producers and field collectors, has influenced numerous country, folk, rock and bluegrass artists through the years. When you listen to singers such as Clarence Ashley, Almeda Riddle, Ola Belle Reed, Ralph Stanley, Bill Monroe, Del McCoury and numerous others, what you hear is the sound of truth. It is a genuine, no-frills style that tells a story directly and personally, with a hard-edged tonal quality that cuts across distances and goes directly to the heart.

Cary Fridley, the popular singer in the old-time string band The Freight Hoppers, has done extensive research into old-time vocal styles, and has studied the singing of Sara and Maybelle Carter, Hazel Dickens, Alice Gerrard, Dellie Norton, Dolly Greer and other singers of Appalachian Mountain ballads. She has put together a lesson that covers basics of vocal production: proper breathing and posture, projection, use of the diaphragm and how to project and hold notes with proper support. She provides exercises for getting a strong, resonant sound, showing how this music should be sung with the chest voice ("your speaking voice, but with proper support") as opposed to the head voice ("your silly voice, or falsetto"). Most importantly, these songs tell a story, and Cary shows how she phrases and interprets beautiful old-time ballads such as "I Am Man Of Constant Sorrow," "A Roving On A Winter's Night" and the a cappella lament "My Love Has Brought Me To Despair." She also covers! such topics as how to "fix" out of tune notes, and demonstrates duet singing with Frank Lee on the Carter Family classics "Anchored In Love" and "Sailor On The Deep Blue Sea." As a special treat, The Freight Hoppers join in for a spirited rendition of Gid Tanner's "Prettiest Little Girl In The County."
